The imporTance of

Style

It is very important to me to achieve design solutions that are timeless, personal, and appropriate for each client design story. I look for design discipline, integrity and a certain reduction of elements. More often than not, the results will not be “minimal.” But I try hard to create a language that establishes a conversation of sorts between the objects and the furniture, and their relationships to space and architecture. This past spring, I designed the library space for the DC Design House. The existing faux painted oak ceruse paneling reminded me of some of Jean Michel Frank’s rooms from the 1930’s. So I tried to recreate the calmness of his original designs by combining Scandinavian mid-century classics with 18th century chairs, 1960’s American art, Picasso-style ceramics, 1970’s lighting, a Nakashima table and 1930’s French pieces. The result is a room that is restrained, yet classic; visually engaging and physically comfortable. Mr. Whitehead went on to say in his essay that “with style you attain your end, and nothing but your end.” Article by Nestor Santa-Cruz, IIDA

t

he question of style comes up very early when I start a new project, and I am trying to understand my clients’ design sensibilities.

“Style is the exclusive privilege of the expert,” he writes, “style is always the product of specialist study, the peculiar contribution of specialism to culture.”

As I am not interested in trends—nor in having a signature style in my work— I take very seriously the need for style definition at the beginning of each design.

Take for example the idea of mixing periods and styles, patterns and contrasting “fun” colors. It has in the hands of the amateur, the risk of being chaotic and superficial, and easily results in trendy solutions.

My dear cousin, Mercedes Solis, recently shared an essay with me by Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947) titled The Aims of Education. I was quite taken by a few of his thoughts about style. 14 ISSUE NO. 5

Personally, I am very conscious that my design work is referential. It always draws inspiration from an array of both classical and contemporary references. Photography by Angie Seckinger.

BLOOM

Located east of Logan Circle and directly north of the US Capitol building in the NW quadrant, Bloomingdale is a downtown District of Columbia neighborhood that has been experiencing a steady revival. In recent years, businesses have re-populated the commercial properties along First Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW, with additional activity on North Capitol Street. Known for its iconic turreted Victorian homes, Bloomingdale retains a unique character with both historic charm and artsy edginess. Homes prices generally range from the $200,000’s for a small condo, to over $1,000,000 for a large renovated house.

26 ISSUE NO. 5

MINGDALE When real estate broker Suzanne Des Marais represented her first home buyer in Bloomingdale in 2001, there were a number of abandoned, empty houses and little commercial activity. She fell in love with the blocks of Victorian houses and moved to the neighborhood herself shortly after. As the daughter of an architect, she was intrigued by all of the possibility. She relates: “My father was a Mid Century Modern architect, but he

was also a preservationist and a professor, so I grew up looking at and discussing historic homes and renovation.” Although Des Marais has owned her current home in Bloomingdale for nearly nine years, she is preparing to embark on an extensive renovation. When her home, which was built in 1895 started to show signs of wear and tear, there was never any question of moving.

“I am committed to the Bloomingdale neighborhood as a community. My daughter was raised here. I consider the renovation of my house as an investment in the neighborhood.” Des Marais is the founder of 10 Square Team at Keller Williams Capital Properties. She and her real estate team provide service throughout DC, as well as close in Maryland and Virginia. An industry leader, she is a Past President of the District of Columbia Association of Realtors®., 2014 President Elect of the Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors®, and a member of the board of directors for the National Association of Realtors®.

BIG BEAR CAFE bigbearcafe-dc.com

“With few businesses and no sit down restaurants a decade ago, there was an opportunity to develop the environment that we live in and to create the kinds of businesses that neighbors very much wanted to see.” —Stu Davenport, Owner of Big Bear and Bloomingdale resident since the early 2000’s

28 ISSUE NO. 5

On Sundays between May and November neighbors and visitors to Bloomingdale enjoy the Bloomingdale Farmer’s Market, and can stop in for an omelet and coffee next door at Big Bear Café. Opened in 2007, at the corner of 1st and R Streets NW, Big Bear gets its name from the market and deli that existed in that spot in various iterations over the past hundred years. A large bear painting, by Bloomingdale resident and artist Sean Hennessy graces the west side of the building. (Incidentally, Sean Hennessy’s decorative painting can also be found in Boundary Stone and at 10 Square Team’s offices). Although Big Bear is largely known as the place to go to get an excellent cup of coffee, they have a full service dinner that is definitely worth checking out. They strive to use local ingredients sourced from farms in the region, and grow their own herbs on site.

YOGA DISTRICT yogadistrict.com

Yoga District brings together a diverse group intern volunteers, yoga teachers, and students of all ages and body types for the experience of a community yoga studio. Located at 1830 1st Street NW, Yoga District Bloomingdale is part of a local cooperative of Yoga District studios where you

can learn yoga and meditation practices. Whether you just need stress relief or are striving to bend like a pretzel, Yoga District has classes that can help. Founder Jasmine Chehrazi was living a few blocks away in a funky old rowhouse with roommates

when Yoga District opened its doors in Bloomingdale in 2008. She commented that the neighborhood “has charm, style, history, diversity, depth, and a strong sense of community. Bloomingdale is so close to everything, yet has the pleasant feeling of being tucked away from it all.”

BACIO baciopizzeria.com

Opened in 2011, Bacio is located at 81 Seaton Place NW on one of Bloomingdale’s picturesque historic blocks. When asked what he likes most about Bloomingdale, Bacio Pizzeria owner Atilla Suzer does not hesitate.

“Bloomingdale is the warmest, friendly neighborhood in DC!” It’s not unusual to see neighbors walking home carrying a fresh hot pizza box. Bacio has an indoor dining room, as well as patio seating. Of course the menu includes pizza, such as the “LeDroit Park” with anchovy, capers, basil, cherry tomato, mozzarella, and tomato sauce. Bacio also features locally made desserts from Grassroots Gourmet and Uncle Chips, as well as Moorenko’s ice cream.

RUSTIK rustikdc.com Rustik Tavern is about to celebrate their fourth birthday and owner Diton Pashaj has tremendous gratitude for those who have been with him on the journey. His family has been extremely supportive and several of the staff have been there from the beginning. He even convinced Chef Seth Brady, a vital part of Rustik’s success, to move back to DC from San Francisco. Pashaj tells us why he chose to open Rustik Tavern in the Bloomingdale neighborhood, “Many years ago, I lived just south of Bloomingdale, and I found the neighborhood 30 ISSUE NO. 5

very charming. I had helped open other restaurants in DC, each one a few blocks east of the last. I had a sense that Bloomingdale would be a very nice place to work and start a business.”

“Plus, you can’t beat the character of our streets.” Rustik Tavern, located at 84 T St NW, is a friendly place with tasty eats and good drinks. The versatile space with a patio is great for bringing family, meeting a date, or catching up with an old friend.

BOUNDARY STONE

boundarystonedc.com

Named after the forty stones placed as mile markers that formed the original diamond shape of the District, Boundary Stone Public House opened its doors at 116 Rhode Island Avenue NW in 2011. Business partners Gareth Croke and Colin McDonough, both Bloomingdale residents, envisioned a true neighborhood pub with a welcoming environment where people can enjoy food, drink, and the simple pleasures of music and good company. A family endeavor, their brothers Matt Croke and Peter McDonough, as well as Gareth’s dad, Bill Croke, are involved with the pub.

“The motivation for opening Boundary Stone in Bloomingdale was to provide a gathering place for our neighbors.” —Gareth Croke, Partner, Boundary Stone

I love real estate. I love the way we create comfortable spaces for our families and decorate the rooms in which we spend our lives. That’s what makes life rich and textured. And finding that perfect space for a client is what makes a great Realtor®. Over the years, I have developed a knack for finding hidden gems—those incredible, elegant, architecturally interesting homes in great neighborhoods. My niche is elegant eco-chic living that includes best building practices to maximize energy efficiency, healthy living and cost reductions. I offer my clients a green ecofriendly perspective that benefits all parties in the real estate transaction. With over 15+ years as an IT consultant for residential/wholesale/settlement companies and the Department of Energy (DOE), I made a natural progression to real estate and have become a trusted name with buyers, sellers, Realtors®, builders, mortgage brokers and settlement attorneys. In my own family life, I know the importance of healthy living practices, of finding space—new or renovated—that meets “green” standards. I work with my homebuyers to find homes that save money on utilities. Likewise, builders want to partner with me because I understand the intricacies of LEED certification. Plus, I feel a great social responsibility from making this my life’s work, regularly tweeting and posting online about best “green” practices in the home. My work for the environment does not diminish my resilience at the negotiating table. My clients say I am creative and sharp because I understand real estate and know how to get the best price for them. One client said I handled her family’s transaction with “fairness, gusto and guts.”

estled in the hills just outside of Lincoln Village, Springdale is situated on 5.9 stunning park-like acres. The estate has an intriguing past that will surely beguile any American history aficionado. Famed educator, author, and historian Samuel M. Janney originally constructed the property to serve as an all-girls boarding school. Janney was known as an avid abolitionist, and thus Springdale is believed to have served as a stopping point on the Underground Railroad leading up to the Civil War. Springdale has even hosted Lyndon B. Johnson and Sam Rayburn poker games in the Parlor. In more recent times, the property has been operated as a quaint bed and breakfast as well as an area reception facility. This Hunt Country federal style manor home is generously appointed with eight bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and eight functioning fireplaces. An idyllic family escape or an entertainer’s delight, the main house features a commercial grade kitchen and a perfectly situated sun room offering views of the streams, bridges and gardens that complete the enchanting estate. The architecture oozes quintessential 19th-century quality and craftsmanship while the grounds rouse an undeniable sense of grandeur. Springdale’s rustic beauty and unparalleled tranquility make it one of the most desirable properties on the market today in Loudon County. Fortunately enough, this piece of old-world elegance comes with modern convenience as the home is located just an hour West of Washington D.C. and a 40 minute drive from Dulles International Airport.
