After spending years building in impoverished regions of the world, Smith decided to bring his work back to the states and founded Brush Arbor Home Construction. For every custom home built, Brush Arbor builds a home in a third world country for a family in need. Read our exclusive interview with Jonathan Smith on giving back as a homebuilder. Q: For readers who aren’t familiar, tell us a little about yourself and your business. A: Brush Arbor started 10 years ago from nothing. We had no investors and I had saved about $10,000 for our family of five to live off of while I started the business. I think my wife had to show more faith than I did as I left a steady job with a production builder. Had I not lived a few years in third world countries and seen what those people do each day just to survive, I would never have taken the risk to start Brush Arbor. We have steadily grown from there and now have nine excellent people on our team.

Q: What is the most challenging part of your business? A: It’s interesting, when you first start your business the hardest part is finding good jobs and getting your name out there. Now that we have our reputation, maintaining it to the highest level is the challenge. Every customer is different and every home is unique. The challenge of quality and pure customer joy is daily, it’s not something you just solve and move on. We try to meet the challenge with teamwork and by having Brush Arbor team members and subcontractors that love working with us. Work isn’t always fun, but the Golden Rule really works in business when put into practice without compromise.

Q: In practice, how does the “Buy One, Build One” program work? A: Having lived a couple of years of my life in third world countries, I know quite a few people in those countries that are giving their lives to serve the needs of the people there. We let our in-country partners know who our target recipients are and we send them the money to build the homes simultaneous to building each home here in Northern VA. Our recipients are often widows, families with a person with a disability, or simply the poorest of the poor. We ask that if there are able-bodied people in the family, that they help with the construction. We also ask that they volunteer with other homes in the village if/when we build for their neighbors. All of the work is done by locals.

Q: What has been the most rewarding part of this program? A: Seeing the pictures and reading about the families is great. I have gotten to meet a few of the families and that is even better. When we adopted our son from Uganda we had a house going in a village where I used to live. It was for a grandmother caring for about 10 grandkids whose parents had died. This woman was the poorest in the village but loved by all and a very giving woman. Her husband was the pastor of a tiny church and had died about 10 years prior. She lived in a grass/mud hut with all of these kids and they had a piece of sheet metal laying on top of the thatch roof with big rocks on top to hold it down in the wind. During monsoon season, the roof would collapse and the rocks would cave into the hut. We were in Uganda for two months for the adoption and the house finished right before we left to come home. They had a dedication ceremony and many of the village people came to dedicate the home. At the end, the 10-yr-old grandson came up to me and was crying as he spoke. Latigo, my friend of 20 years who built the home, translated the Luganda and started crying as he translated. Latigo is a big 6’5” burly Ugandan from Gulu and saw many of his family members killed by Joseph Kony’s LRA rebels. I had never seen him cry before. The boy said, “I kept praying every time the roof collapsed that God would give us a house to be safe in. I stopped praying because I didn’t think God was listening. Now I know that God was listening and I want to help other people in my village who need help.” That moment was priceless to me.
