WINTERIZING y OuR

hOME

In between sipping cider and wearing cozy sweaters, don’t forget your home needs some special treatment too this season. With winter right around the corner, make sure your home is ready and safe for your family. Here is our checklist for winterizing your home this year. ChECK BATTERIES

COvER CRACKS & LEAKS

REvERSE CEILIng FAnS

This is a simple yet often overlooked step. Checking the batteries in your various alarms and safety devices will make sure everyone stays safe this winter, no matter what accidents or storms occur. This include smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and other home protection devices. Winter is a common time of the year for indoor smoke and fires to occur, and poorly ventilated space heaters can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure flashlights are ready to go in case of power outages. In addition, stocking up on extra batteries is always a good idea!

To make sure you heat your home efficiently, seal any cracks that can possible let cold air in. Cracks usually around windows and exterior walls, so check these spots carefully. Add weather stripping or caulking to remove unwanted air leaks and drafts, and most importantly, to keep those heating bills low!

To best circulate heat around your home, reverse your ceiling fans from their summer direction. This is a great way to give your family extra warmth without adding to the heating bill. Looking from below, the fan should be circulating clockwise.

CLEAn OuT guTTERS

Be sure to clean your gutters before winter hits to prevent costly repairs and damage on your home. Removing leaves, pine needles, and other debris will prevent clogged gutters, which can lead to water and ice problems during the winter. Cleaner rain gutters will help with melting ice and excess rain to flow properly, preventing flooding and other home damages.

TRIM BRAnChES

Ensure your yard stays strong and healthy until the spring by trimming your branches. Winter storms can weigh down trees with ice and snow, and wind only adds to your problems. Remove anything especially close to the sides of your home and roof that could potentially cause damage. Bonus tip: prep your yard by also covering outdoor furniture and shutting off water valves.

CLEAn ChIMnEyS

One the best parts of cold weather is curling up by the fire. Cleaning your chimney is crucial for maintaining a safe fireplace, as highly flammable creosote can build up. Schedule a professional chimney cleaning early in the season to make sure you are ready before extralow temps hit. Be sure to also check the exterior of your chimney for loose materials or debris. Add InSuLATIOn

Keep the heat in and the cold out by adding insulation to your home. This will cut your energy bill while also giving you extra warmth. Some of our favorite quick fixes include adding a chic thick curtain or fuzzy floor rugs to trap heat in your home.

DC COCKTAIL WEEK Get ready for this year’s DC Cocktail Week! With more than 50 restaurants and bars participating, you’ll be getting quite the taste of our local happy hour here in the District. Restaurants will offer specially priced cocktail and food pairings for a single price. DC Cocktail Week is sponsored by the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington (RAMV) and will run from November 14 – November 20. It’s definitely a great opportunity to check out different restaurants and bars without going for a full course meal. Participating restaurants range from Dupont Circle’s Hanks Oyster Bar to Jose Andres’ Jaleo in Bethesda.

Tips for Getting the Most out of DC Cocktail Week: Make ReseRvations Make sure you have seats at your favorite restaurant or bar and book ahead! Use websites such as opentable. com to make booking easy. Spare yourself the frustration of the walk-in line, especially if you plan on a party of more than two. Take note that some restaurants do not take reservations, so double check!

Read and Review Check out websites like Yelp and Foursquare to read restaurant menus and reviews so you know what to expect, what ambiance you’ll be getting, and the dishes they’re serving. Keep in mind that some of these restaurants will specialize on cocktails only and others will pair cocktails and food, so plan accordingly!

tRy soMething new Creative cocktails in DC can get pricey, so this week of discounted drinks is the perfect time for you to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You’ll also get a little taste of the unique and ever-changing cocktail scene in DC.

Plan youR own PaiRings Find a bar with fantastic cocktails but no pre-designated food pairings? Don’t forget a few guidelines when picking out your own accompanying food. Colorless alcohols pair well with seafood: gin with shellfish and vodka with fish. Darker spirits compliment meat: rum with pork and whiskey with steak. As for tequila? Tacos of course!

Gild the table Embrace shades of red, orange, and yellow using seasonal blooms for your Thanksgiving centerpiece. Complement these warm tones with a gold-patterned table runner that will make the colors pop even more!

embRace the Faux Concerned about wasting flowers or fruit with your centerpiece? Try swapping your produce for faux-duce! Reuse them throughout the year or save them for next year’s festivities, with no need to worry about wasting plants or food for aesthetics. Use them as they are, or spray paint them copper, gold, or silver for an extra shimmer!

Get cReative with FloRals The best Thanksgiving centerpieces are more than just a standard vase of flowers. Save dried flowers from your last bouquet and add dried leaves and branches to make a trendy bundle at your table. Sick of vases? Try vintage wooden spools, which are the latest centerpiece trend for 2016.

FaRm to table While we typically decorate with warm tones in the fall, don’t be afraid to try a white and blue gingham table runner to add a touch of Americana and country charm! Add some pinecones and small pumpkins to your tablespace to tie in the familiar fall palette.

cRaFty caRvinG While the kids carve jack-o-lanterns, carve your own for a stunning centerpiece vase! Remove the center of the pumpkin to create a vase for your seasonal autumn flowers. Don’t forget to add a few twigs to mix textures!

wooden cRates Worried about making your centerpiece too big or too small? Use a pallet box to keep everything in order. Fill in your box by mixing and matching different gourds and use mason jars with candles in them to keep it festive!

metallics and white Keep it classy and ring in the cooler air by using metallics and white in your centerpiece. Use silver candle holders and frosted cones to compliment chilly nights against a dark stained wood table runner for a warmer feel.

a Quick Fix Short on time but still want to add fall charm to the table? Try a simple tablescape with candles, pinecones, and leaves. Throw in some floral stems and oranges to bring out warmer hues. FOR ALL What better time of the year to volunteer and reach out to help the homeless and hungry than Thanksgiving? Washington DC has lots of charitable organizations participating in volunteer activities during this time of year where volunteers are needed to prepare and serve holiday meals for the poor. You can also make donations or join fundraising events. Here are a few opportunities to start your season of giving.

SOME (So Others May Eat)

Bread for the City

This organization hosts holiday gatherings for program participants. Volunteers can help out by preparing and serving meals, games, and decorations. Thanksgiving dinner baskets are also given out to feed struggling families.

Bread for the City is a food drive, cash drive, and telethon to provide Thanksgiving meals to low-income families. Volunteers can help collect cash donations, food donations, and the loading and unloading trucks of food.

Food and Friends Volunteers can assist Food and Friends by assembling and delivering Thanksgiving meals. Their cause it to provide healthy food to support men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other illnesses.

Capital Area Food Bank

Help by making monetary donations or deliver Thanksgiving food baskets to senior citizens. Every year, Capital Area Food Bank teams up with WHUR-FM-Howard University Radio at Food2Feed to help those struggling with hunger in DC for Thanksgiving. Photos courtesy of: US Consulate Chennai, Maryland National Guard, Catholic Diocese of Saginaw.

Salvation Army – National Capital Area This organization strives to improve the lives of needy and provide holiday meals. Salvation Army will host “The Feast of Sharing,” a free Thanksgiving dinner held at the Washington Convention Center where volunteers can help prepare and serve food, as well as cleaning up after the event.
