In 1885 this exquisite mansion was built by renowned turn of the century architect Thomas Schneider. The property served as a gathering place for high society citizens, as well as the unofficial embassy for recovering Confederates in the early 1900s. It has since housed a museum and the Confederate Memorial Association. A gorgeous restoration has left all of the original brick, hardwood and heart of pine floors, antique fireplaces, crown molding, pocket shutters, and countless other details in impeccable condition. Boasting eleven bedrooms, six and a half bathrooms, nine fireplaces, three amazing Czech crystal chandeliers, an English basement, and an in-law suite spread out over five levels, this amazing masterpiece is breathtaking. Soaring ceilings, 1800s-style great room with two fireplaces, two master suites, updated kitchens, and a huge outdoor patio are only a few of this home’s endless features.

art+SOUL

y secret to interior design: find a special piece, favorite color, inspiration or family heirloom and design around it. In our home, the design aesthetic seemed to effortlessly transition from “art to our soul.” The paintings in our home were created by local artists from various places we have lived, where our wonderful children were born and our favorite vacation destinations. It has taken many amazing and exciting years to complete our home’s canvas with these unique pieces that are priceless reminders of the special meaning that the word “home” evokes. Our art is a timeline of our lives. The artwork you see in this photo came from China and Vietnam, where our children were born. As my husband and I walked through remote villages in each country, we quickly discovered that interpretations of art and beauty, while distinct in each culture, have a universal appeal to ones’ heart. In China, on the outskirts of Beijing, we found an art supply store that doubled as a gallery for students. Here we purchased a few paintings on canvas, which began our collection. In Vietnam, the streets are filled with small homes tucked away in a labyrinth of incredibly long and narrow corridors filled with artists doing interpretations of famous artists but our search led us to a group of young and talented painters that were inspired to paint what they wished and not open to imitation of others. We feel very fortunate that we happened upon these spectacular artists. One day soon, we hope to bring our children back to these places and add to our collection of art and memories. These paintings have inspired the style and feel of our home and depict the beauty of our children’s heritages.

“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”—Pablo Picasso This idea of art being our focal point made me curious to ask my neighbor what inspired her home design which so beautifully depicts her Iranian heritage. She told me an enlivening story about her favorite piece of art in her home. In the late 1950’s, her mother traveled to San Francisco to study. While there, she fell in love with a rendition of the painting “The Misunderstood” by Man Ray (1938). She returned to Iran with her treasured artwork. When the revolution occurred, she left with her children to England and left most of their belongings behind, including the Man Ray. In 1990, my friend traveled to Iran where she rediscovered the artwork that had such meaning to her mother still gracing the family home’s walls. It has remained as a timeless memory for her as it now hangs above the hearth of their Washington DC home. The dictum for District Home Magazine is “Every home has a story. We help you tell it.” We truly believe this and anticipate that our designers and homes will inspire our readers to create their own unique style of “Art and Soul.” I wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all of the support and encouragement you have given me while starting DHM. This has been a collaborative effort and I could not have accomplished this without the help of my family, friends and incredible colleagues. You have all been amazing! Thank You. Please enjoy the magazine!

Then and Now A Beautiful View in Kalorama

H

o m e to f i v e U . S . P r e s i d e n t s ,

countless dignitaries, politicians and the international elite, the Washington neighborhood of Kalorama means “beautiful view” in Greek. Perched on a hill just outside the original city of limits, Kalorama must have had a beautiful view indeed in times past; now, the view is just as beautiful, but instead it is the houses within the neighborhood itself that provide the eye candy. Just a few blocks from the homes of Woodrow Wilson and Ted Kennedy, 2113 S Street typifies the neighborhood’s grand and stylish architecture in many ways. Boasting a breathtaking solid stone facade and a generous width of over twenty-two feet, the stately home certainly has curb appeal, too. With eleven-foot ceilings on the first and second floors, the feeling of space is unmistakable. The living room, master bedroom suite and upper levels are flooded with southern sunlight year-round, and the Washington Monument is visible from the top floor entertainment suite, complete with its own wet bar and roof deck.

The Dwight & David Group has worked with the owners for over six years, and David Bediz is pleased to offer the property as one of his favorite listings. Despite a career of over nine years, 400 properties sold and $250M in total sales volume with his partner Dwight Mortensen, David says this home is special. “You just get a feeling of comfort and style from the moment you walk in,” he said. “It’s grand, but it’s also really chic at the same time,” David continued, noting the walnutstained original heart-of-pine floors and exposed brick found throughout the home. “We’ve been through just about all of these homes over the years, but not many have such a nice blend of old and new.”

a transition unlike no other in its history. an entirely new way of living was being pioneered, and architects from europe began to share their unique vision of modernism within the context of how americans lived. the late arthur H. Keyes (1917-2012) was among the visionary architects of this era who, trained by the masters of the Bauhaus and its proponents, created a unique and powerful style during his highly celebrated and prolific career, which ended only last year. Among his early influences were his years under the tutelage of Walter Gropius and Frank lloyd Wright, the references to which are clearly evident in his work at 2605 31st street, nW.

located in one of the most distinguished settings in Washington, this residence was designed by arthur Keyes for his family in 1949 at the forefront of the mid-century modernist movement in america, yet it has maintained its vigor as well as its unblemished demeanor. Here, one enjoys a feeling of privacy unparalleled in any part of Washington. the site offered a great challenge in designing a space that would be functional as well as beautiful. It harmonizes with its park-like setting perched in the trees, offering commanding views from the southeast-facing terraces. there are enormous oak and magnolia trees framing the property, and it offers a tranquility that can only be created by the virtues of nature itself.

The house also offers its own spa containing a swimming pool, sauna and changing room, all with spectacular views. the public spaces, in the modernist spirit of le corbusier, offer large, open plans with uninterrupted light from every aspect. the private spaces are intimate and inviting, all of which have their original built-in storage arrangements inspired by the architectural drive to create an integrated and cohesive living arrangement among the various domestic requirements of a good home. 2605 31st Street, NW Washington, DC 20008 Offered at: $2,995,000

Back in the fall of 2012, the city put out a request for proposals to redevelop the R.L. Christian Library at the city owned address 1300 H Street NE, with the hopes to give the H street corridor a facelift. Six proposals were entered and in January the District’s Office of the Deputy Mayor awarded Fundrise with the rights to redevelop a 30 unit residential building with a local food market and community buy in. Fundrise states that they believe the community investment model helped their proposal stand out.

F

Build Your

CitY

undrise is brought to you by the team behind Popularise and is a direct result of their first project. Popularise bought the space at 1351 H Street NE and instead of building what they believed was the best fit for the neighborhood they polled residents to inquire to what they wanted to see occupy the space. After taking in all the suggestions they decided to go with Maketto, an eatery-store by the restaurant Toki Underground and DURKL. This highly anticipated project is set to open this summer. Once Popularise was ready to start building Maketto, they were reluctant to go obtain their funds from a large bank and instead reached out to the community and now DC and VA residents can buy one to one hundred shares at $100 a piece. The shareholders in total will have up to 30 percent of the business and will benefit from any increase in property value. Fundrise believes that by investing in local properties, you are investing in your community and as your neighborhood grows and succeeds so does your investment. Their online platform allows you to invest in, and own local real estate. Fundrise selects potential investments and offers securities through its online investment management site. Fundrise “puts the power back in your hands.” If you find yourself in the H Street Corridor this summer, make sure you stop by Maketto, and for more information visit the Fundrise website at

MY MICRO NY, NYC

Location: Kips Bay, Manhattan Program: Ten-story modular residential building with 55 micro-unit apartments, community facility, retail Client: NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development Design Team: Eric Bunge, Mimi Hoang (Principals); Competition Phase: Ammr Vandal (Associate, Project Architect); Daniel-Katebini Stengel, Christopher Grabow, Alex Tseng, Nancy Putnam (Design Team) Development Monadnock Development, Team: Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation

Is DC Ready For Micro-Unit Living? nARCHITECTS’ design for My Micro NY, in collaboration with Monadnock Development and the Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation, is the winning proposal in the adAPT NYC competition sponsored by the NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD). My Micro NY will be New York City’s first micro-unit apartment building on a City-owned site and the first multi-unit Manhattan building developed using modular construction. The project focuses on quality and livability through features that highlight the use of space, light, and air, such as 9’-10” floor-to-ceiling heights and juliet balconies. By incorporating setbacks as a governing design logic, My Micro NY could in principle be adapted to many sites, at a range of heights and floor area ratios, and at nearly any location in a block. The 55 micro-units, ranging from 250 to 370 square feet, achieve affordability for low- and middle-income households without any direct City subsidy or financing, in part through its use of modular design to significantly shorten project schedule. The adAPT NYC competition was created as part of Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s New Housing Marketplace Plan to introduce additional choices within New York City’s housing market to accommodate the city’s growing population of one- and twoperson households. The City’s housing codes have not kept up with its changing population, and currently do not allow an entire building of micro-units. Mayor Bloomberg will waive certain zoning regulations at the Kips Bay site to allow the My Micro NY pilot project to be developed. Is DC ready for the micro-unit? With the percentage of one- to two-person households in the District comparable to that of New York, micro-units may be coming to DC sooner than one could imagine. My Micro NY is redefining not only livability in New York’s small spaces, but also the potential for adaptable comfort in any urban context. —Photos and article courtesy of nARCHITECTS
