Does the opening title of Netflix’s “House of Cards” look familiar? That’s because Bloomingdale’s colorful rowhouses are in it! Bloomdale is a vibrant community between Howard University and North Capitol Street, only a 15-minute walk from Shaw.

While Bloomingdale might have its history of being an undesirable living location, the past few years have seen a surge in how many businesses have opened, safety regulations, and the value of homes. Now, it’s more known for its vibrant community and is home to many famous restaurants, including The Red Hen and Boundary Stone Public House.

The community also boasts homes with a lot of charm and character. Most Victorian homes have architectural details such as hardwood floors throughout, high ceilings, bay windows, pocket doors, and chestnut columns. Local residents would also say the community is exceptionally diverse, with both newcomers and those who have stayed around for decades.

Besides eating at growingly popular restaurants and catching up with friendly neighbors, there are lots to do around the neighborhood. 7DrumCity is a hub where musicians & hobbyists can take classes and perform with one another. The venue also hosts free open house potluck jams every month. LeDroit Park is half a mile away and is another great option, where you’ll always see people picnicking, using the dog park, and taking in the scenery.
