LIGHT UP THE SEASON
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26 – SUNDAY, JANUARY 22
5 PM – 10 PM
Light Up the Season is a family-friendly event that supports the inspiring patients, families and staff of Children’s National Hospital. Traditionally, the event pairs patients with a local designer to create festive holiday trees and decorations. The Four Seasons Washington, DC prominently displays this artwork during the holiday season. This year, the Four Seasons engaged a premier, Chicago-based, event design and décor company to transform the property into a magical, multi-dimensional holiday dreamscape. This firm will work with Children’s National patients to create one-of-a-kind holiday trees, menorahs and other festive décor.
This year, we will celebrate Light Up the Season after Thanksgiving through the New Year.
Proceeds from Light Up the Season directly support the hospital in the form of Annual Grants and Major Gift programs. Funding advances world-class pediatric care and research to find new treatments and cures. It supports critical medical equipment, improves the patient hospital experience and provides for professional development of doctors, nurses and hospital staff, as well as numerous initiatives to deliver healthcare to families in under-resourced communities.

The Next Neighborhood
Georgetown
The Perfect Intersection of Historic Charm and Upscale Modernity
Source: Long & Foster
Living in Georgetown, D.C.
Established in 1751, the Georgetown neighborhood is one of the District’s oldest, most iconic and most beloved. Situated on the banks of the Potomac River, Georgetown is a popular spot for waterfront dining, cycling, jogging and people watching at outdoor cafes and cozy coffee houses. The neighborhood’s narrow, tree-lined streets are home to impeccably maintained row houses, gated embassies and walk-up apartment buildings that radiate charm, class and sophistication.
Things to Do in Georgetown
While much of Georgetown’s real estate is devoted to housing, a large portion of the neighborhood’s 750 acres are occupied by upscale shops. You’ll find a sprinkling of nightclubs, local markets that serve piping hot coffee and fresh baked goods, restaurants, and bars. Home to Georgetown University, the neighborhood is packed with all the amenities you’d expect to find in a college town.
Sports enthusiasts will appreciate the trails that line the C&O Canal to Montrose Park and the stunning views of Rock Creek. When the sun’s out, you’ll find locals enjoying it at Waterfront Park and Georgetown’s many amazing green spaces. Restaurants in Georgetown range from no-frills cafes that dish up authentic multicultural cuisine to upscale, fine dining establishments frequented by the many politicians, experts, and dignitaries who frequent the area. Locals
looking for something to do only have to simply step outside and head toward M Street.
Housing in Georgetown
The diverse and aesthetically appealing housing options are a huge reason many D.C. locals opt to settle down in the Georgetown neighborhood. Historic row houses, unique walk-up apartment buildings and new construction townhomes are all available here. You’ll find large single-family homes on spacious lots, but they come with steep price tags appropriate for a neighborhood at the heart of the nation’s capital.
Transportation/Travel in Georgetown
Situated across the Key Bridge from Northern Virginia and less than 5 miles from the U.S. Capitol building, Georgetown is conveniently located, but far enough to feel like its own city. As traffic tends to be on the heavier side, many locals prefer to use public transportation. The closest Metro stations to Georgetown are the Foggy Bottom and Rosslyn stops. Many locals take advantage of the inexpensive DC Circulator Bus that stops along Wisconsin Avenue and M Street. It also provides a cheap ride between Georgetown and the Rosslyn and DuPont Circle Metro stations, as well as Union Station.

COMFY COZY:
RICH-LOOKING HARDWOOD FLOORS
As days get shorter, temperatures fall and we begin to spend more time indoors, many of us are looking for ways to make our homes more snug and cozy. After all, the winter months can be much easier to withstand when our homes become havens of warmth, calm and comfort. As British poet Edith Sitwell once wrote: “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand, and for a talk beside the fire: It is the time for home.”
The good news is that creating your own home haven need not be difficult if you understand how to create such environments through smart decor choices. With that in mind, here are five key decor elements that can go a long way toward making your home seem luxuriously warm and inviting - for both residents and guests.
SOFT AND LUXURIOUS TEXTILES
The upholstery, drapes, curtains, linens, bedding and throws you pick can have a major impact on comfort levels. It may be worth spending more to purchase high-end textiles with high thread counts. One hundred percent cotton, bamboo or silk often feels best against the skin, but some luxury brands also use synthetic blends to their advantage.
Hardwood floors offer unparalleled warmth and beauty to any home regardless of its architecture and design style. And thanks to technology, engineered hardwood flooring now offers the extra protection needed to keep them gorgeous even under duress. LL Flooring’s Era Collection line of engineered hardwood flooring, for example, is three times more impact- and scratch-resistant than traditional white oak hardwood flooring. These floors are even water-resistant, built with cutting-edge 5G locking technology to help stand up to winter’s toughest effects. What’s more, this collection features ultra-wide, ultra-long planks in stylish European oak.
“Engineered hardwood floors are a great home decor choice that offer the timeless appeal of hardwood with modern durability,” says Jen Meska, Director of Merchandising at LL Flooring. “They’re built to withstand changes in temperature and humidity in your home through all four seasons, while delivering the warm, organic benefits of hardwood that can make your home feel cozy and welcoming.”
PEACEFUL ATMOSPHERIC LIGHTING
Our natural human circadian rhythms dictate that warm yellowishwhite light (as opposed to cooler blue light) helps us relax and unwind. In general, light bulbs marked “soft white” or “warm white” will warm up any room. Lighting experts recommend using ceiling and non-
5 style ideas for warming up your house
house this winter
symmetric wall lights to create the most comforting settings, but firelight and candlelight can also add a relaxing ambiance.
COMFORTABLE FURNITURE
Plenty of manufacturers create furniture that’s stylish but not particularly comfortable. If your pieces fit that description, you may wish to exchange them for styles that allow you to come in from the cold, settle in and fully relax. Perhaps it’s time to invest in a new pillowtop mattress, a cushy sectional couch that can seat your entire family around the TV or dining room chairs comfortable enough for gameplaying and lingering conversations.
WARM COLOR SCHEMES
Because warm colors such as reds, yellows, oranges and yellow-greens tend to remind us of sun, sand, and heat, they can make us perceive rooms as warmer and cozier. You may wish to boost that phenomenon by painting one or more of your rooms in those colors, or by choosing a neutral, subtly tinted tone in one of those shades. Many decorators suggest balancing the effect of intensely warm colors with accents in cooler hues.
With colder weather on the way, there’s much you can do to make your home a haven of comfort for your family. Take steps now to evaluate your home and think about improvements that could make it warmer and more wonderful throughout the winter months.

Why did you decide to follow a career in design and residential development?
I have always had a fierce passion for design. I love envisioning how to transform a space from beginning to end. From breaking ground to choosing final finishes and all the details in between, the design process brings me so much joy.
Where do you get your inspiration?
My travels have inspired my creative approach. I am fortunate enough to have traveled to many diverse places around the world. The different countries I’ve visited, cultures I’ve learned from and people I’ve met during my journeys have impacted the way I think about how colors and fabrics can come together. From the colors of the spice markets in Istanbul to the textiles in Jaipur, my favorite place to gain inspiration is from the Parisian Flea Markets. I always find something unique there. I love to wander and pop in and out of the shops, let my mind wonder — nothing is better than the feeling of discovery.
What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in the industry?
ASHLEY VIZZI AKRIDGE CURATOR
Since I have started in the design business I’ve always enjoyed the process of problem solving along the way. There is a real thrill in the hunt of finding a new property. It can be tricky, but I love a good challenge. Right now, finding creative ways to work around the low inventory in the real estate market has been a real focus.
What was your first project?
My first project was a waterfront townhouse in Baltimore, Maryland located in historic Fells Point. It had lipstick red walls and really needed some attention, and maybe a few upgrades, too. I knocked down the walls, renovated the kitchen, renovated the bathrooms, removed tile, added new light fixtures, wallpaper and designed the spaces with new furnishings. It really was a diamond in the rough, and with some TLC it shined.
What does your experience in your previous career in wallpaper bring to your design business? How does that benefit your clients?
Coming from the wallpaper business I was intimately involved in an interiors manufacturing business most of my life. I have a true understanding of color/
design/product knowledge, trends and awareness of everything interiors. It has given me a unique insider view, a genuine understanding of the overall home décor industry.
Do you have a specific style?
Classic and refined with a bit of glamour is how I would describe my style. I love mixing old with new. I am drawn to unique pieces and historic objects that feel personal and meaningful. I enjoy simple clean lines with a pop of color. I appreciate blending different metals and materials to create a memorable space.
What are some of your hobbies?
I love spending time with my husband and three children, collecting vintage clothing, traveling all over the world and of course I enjoy playing a mean game of pickleball!

BUYING
BEST PLACES TO BUY IN DUBAI DUBAI MARINA
The Dubai Marina is one of the most Westernized areas in the city. It is practically the only area of Dubai that is walkable, and many say it is the best place to stay in Dubai.
Thanks to its proximity to Downtown Dubai, Dubai Media City, and Dubai Internet City, it’s popular among working professionals and families alike.
The ultra-modern high-rise residences in Dubai Marina provide spectacular sea views, as well as easy access to shops, malls and cafes. Although real estate near the Dubai Marina is not cheap, you get a lot of luxury for your money.
DOWNTOWN DUBAI
Downtown is the most popular area to stay in Dubai because it has the tallest skyscrapers, the most luxurious shops, and the most glamorous clubs and restaurants.
The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping center, while Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest building. The Dubai Fountain is a spectacular musical fountain show.
Being in the Center of the city means property costs will be among the highest, but the accommodations will be among the most luxurious, with the added benefit of being on the doorstep of many of the city’s big corporations. Not to mention being close to the Dubai Fountains, an ice rink, and an underwater zoo.
AL BARSHA
Al Barsha is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Dubai for those relocating. Al Barsha is conveniently accessible for workers in Media City, Internet City, and Emaar Business Park because to its closeness to two main roadways. The majority of homes in Al Barsha are detached or semi-detached villas; however, there are also single homes available.
There are plenty of restaurants, cafés, stores, and markets in the neighborhood, so you will not have to travel far for food. The neighboring Mall of the Emirates, which boasts hundreds of stores, a major theatre, and even an indoor ski slope, is a must-see sight.
PALM JUMEIRAH
Palm Jumeirah is considered as a modern-day wonder of the world, consisting of a 3 miles long and 3 miles wide artificial island in the shape of a palm.
The area was developed as a holiday destination, that’s why you can find many restaurants, hotels, and resorts in this area, including the Fairmont and the Atlantis.
Amongst all the neighbourhoods in Dubai, buyers often prefer Palm Jumeirah, the best perennial spot for people to live. With many communities competing to bag the top spot in the list of best places to invest, Palm Jumeirah never fails to bag the top spot every year. Most of Dubai’s most profitable projects are situated here, adding more value to this locality. The minimum asking cost is higher here.
