The Next Neighborhood

Quiet and family-friendly yet in close proximity to D.C.’s more bustling areas, Riggs Park truly offers the best of both worlds. The Fort Totten Metro station, Capital Beltway, and Baltimore-Washington Parkway make it convenient for those who commute to work, and its spacious parks make it a particularly great place for dog owners. With the median home price at just over $543,000, this is a residential gem on the rise. Riggs Park has many community assets including the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) Bertie Backus Campus and Urban Food Hub the Lamond-Riggs Neighborhood Library which is planning to undergo a multimillion-dollar renovation, the LaSalle Recreation Center, and a District Department of Employment Services branch. Small businesses such as the newer arts-inspired Culture Coffee Too bistro and Hellbender craft brewery operate alongside older (12-years old or more) small businesses like Riggs Cleaners, Riggs Liquor, and Troka Insurance. Business owners and community volunteers actively support the area as a cultural arts destination, transforming business facades and public spaces with street murals, and engaging the public in special events like the Annual Arts Crawl, and “Fridays at Fort Totten” free, public concerts.

SPRING 2022

For an up-and-coming neighborhood with good transit, Riggs Park is a great option for prospective buyers searching in the DC area. More affordable than other neighboring communities, some find Riggs Park an ideal place to search for an entry single-family home in Northeast DC. You’ll find mostly brick semi-detached homes in Riggs Park, many of which are well-maintained or even recently restored. It’s possible to find some already move-in ready homes in Riggs Park, as well as some homes in need of a few cosmetic updates, occasionally priced under $500,000. This dynamic community, however, continues to grow and produce even more residential opportunities, especially as of late.

CELEBRATES ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY FOUNDED IN 1972, THOS. MOSER’S CORE VALUES REMAIN FOCUSED ON CRAFT, HIGH QUALITY, SUSTAINABILITY On February 2, 1972, Tom and Mary Moser decided to walk into an uncertain future together by starting Thos. Moser. “We had no particular reason to believe we could succeed, but I had to make things out of wood. It was as simple as that,” says Tom Moser, who left a position as a Bates College professor to start Thos. Moser. Over the years, they have designed and built furniture for Popes, US Presidents and CEOs, as well as corporate offices, schools, libraries, and museums, and mostly for residences across the US. 30 | DISTRICTHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

SPRING 2022

“We had no particular reason to believe we could succeed, but I had to make things out of wood. It was as simple as that.” - Tom Moser, Founder, Thos. Moser, Handmade American Furniture “In the 50 years since our start, much has changed in the world,” adds Aaron Moser, one of Tom and Mary’s sons who is chairman of Thos. Moser. “And while time has encouraged us to adapt, our values have not wavered. The way we pursue craft at Thos. Moser and the principles that guide us are as fundamental today as when we started.” He says that the timeless designs are still crafted with pride from the highest quality materials using traditional woodworking techniques. Thos. Moser likens its strong root system of family, partners, colleagues, and customers to that of the American Black Cherry tree, which they harvest in the Allegany Plateau to make much of their sustainable furniture, along with walnut from the Missouri riverbanks. Since 1987, Thos. Moser has operated out of a 90,000-square-foot workshop in Auburn, Maine with nearly 70 craftsmen and craftswomen and showrooms in Freeport, Maine, Boston, Washington, DC, and San Francisco.

RESURGENCE OF HEIRLOOM FURNITURE Since day one, Thos. Moser has been building furniture with sustainably harvested North American Hardwood. They began cultivating relationships with family woodlots nearly 50 years ago, which has enabled them to maintain a high level of quality material. By working with woodlots that practice selective harvesting, allowing healthy regeneration of the forests, Thos. Moser knows they are not only giving their customers the best quality product that will last for their lifetime, but also are allowing the rich natural resource the capacity to grow perpetually. When they harvest a tree, they want to honor the life of that tree by creating something that will live just as long, if not longer, than it took the tree to grow. The global pandemic has forced consumers to slow down, consider what they are bringing into their homes, and create a space that we can feel good about. This "slowing down" moment in history is a recipe for success for an American business, crafting with materials grown in the US and creating handmade, modern-day heirlooms. Heirloom furniture recalls an era of pride in workmanship and a necessity to make things that would last. In age, these pieces look as good and relevant as they were when first purchased. Thos. Moser furniture is built to last a lifetime, and many of the people looking for heirloom furniture may be coveting their parent's Moser furniture purchased 35-40 years ago. They are the designs they grew up with, and they hold meaning and memories from their childhood.

LESSONS LEARNED THROUGH THE YEARS – IN THEIR WORDS • The more things change, the more they stay the same. If we look beyond technological advances, many of which we have

absorbed, we have fundamentally continued the business the same way we did when Tom and Mary Moser founded the company in 1972. It is all about relationships and building a product we can be proud of. • Mary Moser handled the books in our early days while Tom and a handful of craftspeople built the furniture. By the mid-

80s, we took on the task of creating our own recognizable designs, and we've continued to evolve this design ethos ever since. Be on the lookout for a new design in Fall 2022 commemorating Thos. Moser’s 50th Anniversary. • Our biggest business lesson: it's all about relationships. The relationships we have made over the past 50 years, and

continue to cultivate, have been our best business asset. Our community of craftspeople and customers is the driving force of what makes Thos. Moser, and our furniture, something truly unique. SPRING 2022

SPRING REFR

DESIGN TIPS by Georgia Hoyler, Owner of Passerine

38 | DISTRICTHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

SPRING 2022

1. FOCUS ON TEXTILES: One of the most cost effective ways to refresh your decor is by updating textiles throughout your home. The simple replacement of throw pillows from stripes to tonal, block print floral patterns, for instance, makes a substantial impact with little effort. Beyond just pattern updates, consider the fibers of your textiles. Swapping a heavier weight cotton velvet or wool that works for winter to a lighter linen in pillows and bedding subconsciously feels fresher. A cashmere blend or more rustic wool blanket on the end of one’s sofa can be replaced with a lightweight, basket weave cotton. Most importantly, consider the color palette. Consider romantic, cooler hues of spring and summer, such as soft blues, creams and whites.

2. UPDATE YOUR LIGHTING: Knowing that summer’s longer days typically pull brighter, natural daylight tones in your home, consider how to control your lighting. Swap the warm 2700 kelvin bulbs that you craved in winter for energyefficient LED bulbs to compliment the change in natural light outdoors. Have an outside space you like to enjoy in warm spring or summer evenings? Install solarpowered landscaping spotlights or string twinkle lights over your patio or deck to draw you outdoors, even as the light fades.

3. SWAP YOUR RUG: In any room, the most substantial change you can

make without replacing a single piece of furniture is updating your rug. On cold winter nights, the shag of a Moroccan rug’s thick pile may have appeal, but Spring was made for a vintage Persian area rug. The lower pile height an antique Persian Tabriz, Farahan or Bahktiari make them perfect options in warmer months. Looking to replace your rubber entryway mat with something less utilitarian? The lanolin in a vintage rug’s wool pile offers natural water and mold resistance, making it a both forgiving and beautiful upgrade. Make the most out of a medium sized vintage or antique rug purchase by layering it on top of your existing jute or sisal area rugs, amplifying the size and adding an additional layer of texture. Read more about selecting the perfect size rug for your living room here.

4. TRANSITION FOLIAGE: Spring flowers offer an array of bright floral arrangements. But for a more dramatic statement, consider clipping flowering foliage from your yard to bring the season in. Washington’s springtime is full of cherry blossoms, bursting pear trees, and red buds -- a feast for the eyes. When it comes to branches as decor, bigger is always better. Oversized branches bring a sculptural element to a space that evokes a natural drama. Opt for an asymmetrical arrangement to create a more graceful line. By refreshing their water daily, a cut branch can last up to two weeks in your home. Images courtesy of Passerine | Urban Chic Media SPRING 2022
