FACEBOOK: MULTIPLE PERSONAS

Scammer cons ‘older women’ DELIAH BRINKHUIS A Somerset West woman has been defrauded of about R240 000 in just over a month in an alleged Facebook scam. Evidence of the scam was presented in the bail application of Pius Emokpe (37) in the Somerset West Magistrate’s Court on Monday 30 June. Emokpe was arrested by the Somerset West Police at a flat in Gordon’s Bay on 20 February on a charge of fraud pertaining to the depositing of the above amount into his Standard Bank account. According to Somerset West police spokesperson, Sgt Suzan Jantjies, Emokpe targets middleaged women on Facebook by setting up various profiles. It was Emokpe’s alter ego, Charlie Legget, who the 54-year-old woman had fallen prey to between 7 May to 12 June last year. Legget won the woman’s trust after he presented himself as a successful Texan engineer residing in Bloubergstrand. He said he was a widower whose wife had died of cancer and also a single parent to a young daughter. On 7 May, while allegedly in America, Legget first made telephonic contact with the woman informing her that he was robbed and asked her to transfer R10 000 to him via a friend’s Standard Bank account. He had allegedly successfully avoided meeting the woman in person with several excuses, including

work meetings in Johannesburg and contract work in America. A week later, after a part had allegedly broken at the oil rig and needed to be fixed at a cost of R51 364, he allegedly contacted her again, asking for more money. After this incident he also contacted her on four occasions, requesting about R220 000 in total. The woman apparently borrowed money from her mother and used this and money from an investment that had paid out, to deposit another R5 000 into the account on 12 June. Later, the same day, she received a call from Standard Bank’s fraud department informing her that she may have been a victim of a scam. The woman then noticed that the WhatsApp profile photograph of the cellphone number was not Legget’s but that of four black men. She reported it to police. According to Jantjies R1,5 million was paid into bank accounts in Emokpe’s name at Absa, Bidvest, Nedbank and Standard Bank from August 2013 to March 2014. Four other women had also allegedly been scammed out of about R934 640 by Emokpe’s Facebook personas – Ross Clifton, Brian Joe and Clifford Minter. Emokpe’s bail application continues today (Thursday). ) Police suspect these scams may be the work of a syndicate and are requesting all possible victims to phone the investigating officer Sgt Nolan Fisher on 021 850 1325/1300 or 1301. All information will be treated confidentially.

A black Audi came to a standstill at the traffic lights on the R44 just after the Somerset Mall bridge after the driver – who had been shot three times in his abdomen – collapsed and could not drive any further. The man was transported to Helderberg Hospital for treatment.

Man dies of gun shots after fleeing burglary scene CASSY VAN EEDEN A man who tried to drive to a hospital in Somerset West after having been shot in Kuils River on Saturday 28 June, has died. The man, whose details are currently unknown, died as a result of three gunshot wounds to his abdomen said Captain Van Niekerk, spokesperson for the Kuils River Police. He explained that the unknown man was involved in an attempted house robbery in Kuils River, when he was shot. Van Niekerk said that according to a police report people in the

house were threatened by a group of burglars and shots were fired. Police and emergency services believe that the unknown man had attempted to flee the scene in a black Audi which eventually came to a halt near Somerset Mall, when the wounded man was unable to drive any further. Emergency services were then called to a scene on the R44 at around 13:00 at the traffic lights just past Somerset Mall, where the Audi had come to a standstill. A spokesperson for emergency services said that they discovered a man in the vehicle who had been shot. Initially it was thought that the

man had been involved in a hijacking. The driver made it as far as the traffic lights where “he collapsed,” and could not drive any further, said the spokesperson. Helderberg emergency services and the police were contacted shortly afterwards. The spokesperson said that at the time the man was transported to Helderberg Hospital, he was in a critical condition. Van Niekerk has confirmed that the man died shortly after being taken to hospital. The Somerset West police told the DistrictMail that they had no information about the incident.

BP Express robbers still sought by SAPS JAMEY GORDON No arrests have been made so far in connection with the armed robbery at BP Express in Broadway, Strand on Wednesday 25 June. The incident occurred at about 19:00 when six men, of which three were armed, entered the store. According to an employee who was involved in a transaction with a customer at the time, the men casually entered the store as though they were customers. She says two men walked straight into the owner’s office while two more held her and the customer at gunpoint. Without anyone noticing, the employee says she pushed the panic button alerting the armed response unit of Vetus Schola/Helderberg Crime Watch.

She says the men demanded the money in the cash register. When she refused, one of the men cocked the firearm in her face and helped himself to the cash. The men then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash in a silver Polo Vivo and a dark blue Polo Playa belonging to the customer, who had just filled up on fuel. According to the customer, he bought the car a few weeks before to the incident. The employee, who declined to be named, says she has worked for BP Express for the past 13 years and something like this has never happened before. Another employee says she thought “this is the end” and kept praying aloud. “I’m just grateful we made it through this traumatic ordeal unscathed,” says the employee. Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

Mall parking tariffs soar JAMEY GORDON

behuisingsituasie in Macassar.

Undercover parking tariffs at Somerset Mall have been restructured. According to Retha Muller, marketing manager for Somerset Mall, 693 undercover parking bays are offered to shoppers at market-related tariffs. She says considering the average time spent at the mall by shoppers, it was decided by management to offer shoppers a flat rate of R8 for up to four hours parked in the undercover parking area. A further R25 will be charged between four and six hours. Previously, the tariff for parking in the undercover area was R9 for three hours, R12 for four hours and R14 for six hours. When the DistrictMail asked Muller why R25 was charged for what was previously R14 for parking in the undercover parking area between four and six hours, she responded in saying that on average most of the shoppers visit the mall for about two to four hours, and almost never for longer than four hours. Muller further said that Somerset Mall also offers shoppers a free 15 minute drop-and-go service in the undercover parking area. “Parking is part of the business of any property owner who lets out space. It costs to develop parking, run the facilities and maintain equipment,” explains Muller. Furthermore, Muller says 3 200 free parking bays providing convenient access to all main mall entrances are also available. On DistrictMail’s Facebook-page

5

many readers expressed their concerns about the new undercover parking tariff hike. Some of the comments are: Lisa-Marie Bodington: I don’t mind the R8 for four hours, but R25 for four to six hours is ridiculous! Jannie du Toit: Dit is net geld maak. Debbie Jordaan: Not good, what about all the older folks who go to Dischem for medication, etc. and only stay for a short period of time (under an hour)? So they must now park outside? Elizabeth Margaret Groves: I think R8 for 4 hours is very reasonable but the jump to R25 for 4 hours or more is a bit steep. Nicole Neethling: Why are they changing it? Could they say why? I feel the current rates are just fine. You pay for the amount of hours you park. For R25 they can add a car wash. Rosemary Montgomery: That is ridiculous. I will never pay that. Llowellyn Jon Gelandt: What you can do is, if you see you’re near the four hour time period, leave the parking area and park for another four hours. Then, it would cost you R16 for eight hours? Problem solved. Karen Kilian: Make the first hour free. Sorry I won’t pay R25 either. Get real people, and stop this craziness with such high parking fees. You want to attract people not chase them away.

HOUSING: A total of 150 homes have been erected for some of the Lwandle evictees. According to Ward 85 Councillor Mbuyiselo Matha 200 homes were already to have been erected, but due to a shortage of material this could not be done. Matha says the material for the erection of a further 50 homes were delivered on Tuesday (1 July). Concrete mixture for the flooring will be provided later this week. Once the floors have been laid and dried, residents will be able to occupy the homes. The erection of a further 649 homes will be done as soon as the rest of the Asanda Village land belonging to Sanral (South African National Roads Agency Limited) is levelled and prepared.

World-class move for drug-treatment centre CASSY VAN EEDEN Helderberg Cares, a drug treatment centre in Somerset West, is about to undergo an important change, one that is considered as best practice world wide.

Strand Gold and Silver have offered DistrictMail readers some information about identifying fake Kruger Rands. This is in light of two previous articles published by the DistrictMail about coin scams. On the left is a fake Kruger Rand and on the right is an authentic Kruger Rand.

How to spot the fake coin CASSY VAN EEDEN Following two articles in the DistrictMail about residents who were victims of con scams, local business Strand Gold and Silver has offered some information about identifying a false Kruger Rand. Strand business owner Sonja le Roux was conned out of more than R15 000 when she was sold fake Nelson Mandela coins. Helderberg resident Trevor Bailey was scammed out of R8 000 by Jacques Gerber – who is now in police custody – when he purchased a Kruger Rand that he suspects is fake. Strand Gold and Silver said that the following should be taken into account before purchasing a Kruger Rand: A fake Kruger Rand will look like a “polished coin”. A fake Kruger Rand has a yellowish col-

our, while a real Kruger Rand has a red-gold colour. More recent and current Kruger Rands have this red-gold colour, however, in the 1970s and 1980s certain Kruger Rands had a yellowish colour. It is therefore advised that buyers exercise caution when purchasing Kruger Rands. The forgeries that have been noted are dated 1978, 1984 and 1988. ) The eye of Paul Kruger, who is pictured on a Kruger Rand, appears to be closed on a fake Kruger Rand, however, on the authentic coin his eyes are open. ) A fake Kruger Rand does not show the detail etched into the cheek of the face of Paul Kruger as well as the details of the beard, lapel and shoulder. ) The image of Paul Kruger appears smaller on a fake Kruger Rand than on a authentic one.

The treatment centre will be moving to the Somerset West clinic, hopefully by the end of July, said executive director Sarah Fisher. This is good news for many reasons, said Fisher. “Firstly, it allows for a far more seamless treatment and secondly, it is far more accessible to residents.” Fisher notes how it is often very difficult for drug addicts to sacrifice their time and responsibilities – such as earning a living and caring for a family – for treatment and it is also embarrassing for the patient. “By attending the treatment in the clinic as an out-patient no one will know what you are there for – it could be for any illness.” Also, the move to the clinic means that patients will not only receive support from Helderberg Cares, but may be treat-

ed for both medical issues and mental disorders. “This is an immensely positive development and has a number of benefits for society as a whole,” said councillor Benedicta van Minnen, mayoral committee member for Health. Fisher says that this innovate form of treatment – community health out-patient treatment at a public health clinic – is considered “best practice,” and that the rest of the world is “looking to us as an example”. Only the City of Cape Town is currently advocating these shifts, she said. However, providing free treatment and support to everyone is a costly exercise as this service is only partially subsidised by government. Helderberg Cares is grateful for donations of all kinds as well as financial assistance. Readers who wish to help, may call Sarah Fisher on 021 850 0972 or 083 32 73911. If you or your family have a drug problem, you can call Narcotics Anonymous on 083 900 6962.

ROAD REPAIR: Temporary remedial work will be done on a part of Bizweni Avenue where the road surface was damaged after the recent heavy rains. Brett Herron, Mayoral Committee Member for Transport says a combination of silt, sand and gravel from the Fairview development entering the stormwater system in this road caused the damage. According to Herron several damaged water channels prevents water from being conveyed away, resulting in water surcharge which erodes the lower road layers. He says the work will be done after all the channels have been cleared and that a meeting will be set up with the developer and the consulting engineer to try and find a solution.

City to clear last pines in Helderberg Reserve DALEEN FOUCHE AND CASSY VAN EEDEN Twenty hectares of pine plantations on the Helderberg Nature Reserve are currently being felled. This is not part of an alien vegetation clearing programme, said the reserve’s nature conservationist Owen Wittridge. Instead, the clearing is part of a fire hazard and public safety programme for the benefit of reserve visitors and adjacent landowners. The pines are being harvested by forestry company Arabest, who have over 20 years’ experience in tree-felling, said Wittridge. He said that there are two men cutting down the trees in such a way that they fall parallel to one another. Another team then cuts the trunks into logs of about 2,8 – 3 metres long. The selling of the pine timber will generate revenue of over R6 million, all of which will be poured back into the nature reserve, said Wittridge. He said that a major portion of this revenue will be spent on the development of a desperately needed education centre for children in the nature reserve. The felling programme was tabled during the public participation process in 2009, while developing the Integrated Reserve Management Plan (IRMP). The sections to be cleared are found along the lower slopes of the reserve, adjacent to the residential area. The decision to remove the remaining plantations has been on the cards for several years. Public safety is of paramount importance as many of the older trees are showing signs of dying off, while some have already toppled over. There are also concerns that ageing will render the trees susceptible to infestation by Sirex wood wasps (Sirex noctilio), an invasive wood wasp or horntail from Europe and Asia, which is a known economic pest in pine plantations. There are also very real fire-risk concerns associated with such large stands of pines.

The pine plantations on Helderberg Nature Reserve are currently being harvested as a part of health and safety planning by the City of Cape Town. Revenue of over R6 million is expected to accrue from the pine felling. PHOTOS: CASSY VAN EEDEN The larger compartment borders on a residential neighbourhood, where the potential for runaway fires exists. The harvesting process will take about one year and will have very little impact on visitors. A considerable amount of the clearing will take place during the winter months, when visitor numbers are lower. Although no public roads are affected by the harvesting, the reserve’s management has indicated that some of the walking trails may be closed for short periods when the cut timber is extracted and loaded. The pine compartments on the reserve are not natural forests but commercial plantations, which were established during the 1960s.

Part of the original plantation has already been removed and rehabilitated to its natural condition. Reserve management has drawn up a restoration plan, which includes using fire as a mechanism to stimulate seed germination; the collection of protea cones to distribute throughout the burn site after the ecological burn, as well as other factors such as soil erosion and emergent-weed control programmes – all of which will be monitored on a continual basis by the reserve staff. For more information on the Helderberg Nature Reserve and other nature reserves managed by the City of Cape Town, visit www.capetown.gov.za/naturereserves.

Mail Come and shake off the winter blues It’s finally time to shake off the gloom often associated with winter and get yourself, friends and family to the annual Winter Wonderland’s Festival of Lights which officially kicks off in Gordon’s Bay this weekend. The long and keenly awaited Festival of Lights will officially start on Friday 4 July with a parade through the town before the Western Cape Premier Helen Zille switches on the lights at around 19:30. In the meantime, visitors and residents of the town can enjoy the magical blue/white fairy light display in the Milkwood forests and streets every evening until 20 July. A Fun Fair is also being run along Beach Road, Gordon’s Bay where children and parents alike can enjoy a variety of rides and other entertainment. Don’t forget the craft market which is focused on the whole family and is open everyday from 10:00 to 22:00. This weekend will also see 30 musicians playing live music at a variety of venues. Apart from all the entertainment, there will also be food stalls aplenty as well as beer gardens, jungle gyms, art exhibitions and the ever popular and frightening Ghost House. Don’t let the weather predictions of heavy rain and cold weather keep you indoors this weekend. There is just too much to enjoy and see in Gordon’s Bay – you’ve got to be there to experience it all!

Thank you for contribution of ‘old unwanted ties’ I would like to thank the residents of Somerset West for their generous contributions of hundreds of “old and unwanted ties” donated to “Save the tie, save a child” campaign. When you are part of a community that does not just “talk the talk, but walk the walk,” the walk is extremely rewarding. The donation of a tie from the two homeless gentlemen, who would not even take money for a cup of coffee, always gives me a warm feeling and will be a memory that I will treasure forever. I’ve received ties from the richest of the rich, and from poorest of the poor. I’ve met people that I would never have met and have become aware that it is the little things in life that are the most valuable. A smile, a wink, a wave, the sound of laughter and most of all the happiness on a child’s face. The funds raised will enable the charity to bring happiness to many little faces. Clearing up misunderstandings about vets and emergencies In response to the allegations made in a letter in last week’s District Mail, 26 June (Animals are as important to us as children), I would like to clear up any misunderstanding that the public might have with regards to the veterinary profession’s responsibilities when it comes to attending to emergencies: • Vets are mandated by the South African Veterinary Council to attend to a genuine emergency. A veterinary practice is required by the SA Veterinary Council for a vet on call at all times to attend to genuine emergencies, but it is permissible to refer the public in the event of a genuine emergency to an afterhours veterinary practice. • In the Helderberg, the following practices participate in an afterhours rota during the week and on weekends: Country Animal Clinic, Helderberg Animal Hospital, Hillbrook Veterinary Clinic, Teva Veterinary Clinic, Strand Animal Hospital, Somerstrand Veterinary Clinic (Formerly Altena Clinic), Gordon’s Bay Animal Hospital. • Each practice has an allocated day/weekend to take after hours calls. • Phone your veterinary practice

to obtain the telephone number of the on-call vet. • There is an after-hours surcharge applicable to see an emergency. • In the event of a veterinarian not being able to attend to an emergency for whatever reason, the public may be referred to an afterhours clinic outside of the Helderberg. • There are three after-hours practices within half an hour’s drive from the Helderberg – The Cape Animal Medical Centre in Kennilworth, Tygerberg Animal Hospital in Bellville and Panorama Veterinary Clinic, just off the N1. • The Helderberg veterinary practices not listed here have their own arrangements in place, and clients of those practices should enquire as to what are the afterhours arrangements. • During office hours, i.e. 08:00 to 18:00, each veterinary practice in the Helderberg has the responsibility to treat a genuine emergency. However, if a genuine emergency is brought in consulting hours, the patient will be attended to immediately without the need for an appointment. • Between consultation hours, veterinarians attend to hospital patients and perform surgery and

small procedures. • Vets do not work exclusively in their consulting hours. • As most vets are short of time in their personal lives, when veterinarians have completed their procedures, they will then generally attend to personal matters. • If a genuine emergency does arise and a client brings in an animal that needs immediate attention, a vet is only a phone call away – the vets in the Helderberg live in the area and can get to their practice in a matter of minutes. • In the case where a veterinarian is not able to be available in between consulting hours, an arrangement will be in place to refer a genuine emergency to another practice in the Helderberg. I hope that this clears up any misunderstanding regarding veterinary after-hours emergencies. Despite the perception that some people have of vets, vets are indeed animal lovers themselves, and do have the best interests of animals at heart. Veterinarians work long hours, it is a lonely profession, emotionally draining and it is extremely hard work.

CRAIG LESTER PRACTICE MANAGER SOMERSTRAND VETERINARY CLINIC

Licensed informal trading in Somerset West’s CBD A notice of the city of Cape Town’s intention to repeal the Municipality of Somerset West’s proclamation No. 4834 dated 24 December 1993, was published in the DistrictMail on Thursday 26 June. In effect the proclamation announced that on 29 May 2014 the Cape Town City Council repealed laws passed on 24 December 1993 by the Town Council of Somerset West, designed to control areas in which informal trading might be permitted under licence. The new “informal trading plan” proposes to permit licensed informal trading in the central business area bordered by Main Road, Victoria Street, Andries Pretorius Street, Church Street and

Lourens Road and laudably, prohibits informal trading in the remainder of the town. The new area proposed approximately doubles the area where informal traders currently ply their trades, sell their goods and, laudably prohibits informal trading anywhere else. Few users of the CBD would wish to see the current filthy and ill controlled informal trading area be enlarged. Rather than permitting more informal trading in the town, it is suggested that one suitable market place (with toilets and formal rigid roofed stands) be established, say on the land opposite the post office, presently cluttered by proliferat-

ing taxis. The old bus stop area next to the post office could be cleared of traders and given over to the taxis for the sole purpose of dropping and collecting passengers. Any overflow of taxis could be parked on any one of a number of under-utilised parking areas on the south side of town until the need for taxis has been diminished by a formal bus service. Objections must be tendered to The City Manager, tel. 021 590-1519, before 17 July 2014 (fourteen days). Address queries to shirley.alexander@capetown.gov.za.or the same telephone number

Maak ’n plan kry ’n slag nuwe mense by daardie howe. ) It’s extremely sad to see how our justice system fails the victims of crimes by giving the offenders just a slap on the hand. To the Magis trates of Somerset West court, we depend on you to make these of fenders pay accordingly for their deeds. ) I read with disgust that an elder ly man was stabbed in Drama Street. It’s about time the authori ties cleaned out the vagrants that hang out at the bottom of Drama Street, in that open park area where they drink openly in the public and are a general nui sance. This is also an area for criminals to hang out waiting for easy prey.

These civil servants deserve a medal I would like to say a big thank you to three gentlemen working in the Ministry of Labour in Main Street, Somerset West for helping me and my domestic lady with her UIF. We came to the office and she was in chronic pain and couldn’t walk properly so we had to jump the queue and go straight into their office. They gave her a chair and provided a wheelchair to take her back to the car, they also helped me fill in the forms. It must seem like a thankless job for them all day everyday but to be so polite and helpful they deserve a medal.

City fights for info on N2 toll Whether Helderberg residents will be kept in the dark regarding essential information about the proposed tolling of the N1 and N2 highways or not, remains to be decided. It has come to light that the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) allegedly tried to keep information of “great public importance” regarding the multi-billion rand project confidential. Councillor Brett Herron, the City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, believes that Sanral wants to keep secret: The real facts and figures about how much it will cost to convert the N1 and N2 into toll roads; The proposed toll fees and

how these compare to the e-tolls paid by motorists in Gauteng; The toll revenue that the preferred bidder expects from the N1 and N2 toll project; and How much of every rand collected in toll fees will be spent on the toll project infrastructure and operations as opposed to other things that will provide road users with benefits, such as road improvements, maintenance and operational work. Herron says the City called for a directions hearing with the Western Cape High Court’s Deputy Judge President, Judge Jeanette Traverso, for the permission to file its papers as part of the public record. According to Herron the City obtained all the documents requested from Sanral in order to

formulate the supplementary documentation. This is after the City gained an interdict against Sanral in May last year, not only preventing Sanral from taking any steps to implement the toll roads pending the final determination of the City’s review application, but also compelling Sanral to provide them with a number of documents that had formed part of its decision-making process. Whether the City may file its papers as a public record or whether all or part should be kept secret (as Sanral contends) will be argued in camera (behind closed doors) in the High Court on 4 August. Herron expects the review of the application to be argued later this year.

Rotary Club’s board changes Strand Rotary Club hosted its Induction Dinner at the Schonenberg Retirement Village Clubhouse in Somerset West on Thursday 26 June. This year’s event saw the induction of president elect Kobie Farmer.

The club was admitted to the membership of Rotary International on 22 June in 1953 and sponsored by the Stellenbosch Rotary Club, the second oldest club in the district, chartered in 1937. The club started out with 19 members under the leadership of charter president Abe Friedman

(1953–1954). Strand Rotary Club also sponsored the Rotary Club in Somerset West in 1955 and the Rotary Club of Gordon’s Bay in 1998. Two members of the club have become district governors: the late Brian Murray (1973–1974) and Ken Lester (1988–1989). To date the Rotary Club has also had two members as assistant governors: Hayley Swanepoel (2001– 2002) and Marc Stuyck (2013–2014). Inspired by the simple motto “Service above Self”, the Rotary Club has supported and initiated countless educational and humanitarian projects within the Strand community, assisting the youth, the aged, handicapped, illiterate, sick and infirm over the last six decades. Projects include the tidal pool, Boland College, and the building that houses the paraplegic club house. The Rotary Anns, with the aid of funds generated by the Rotary Junk Trunk in Strand, supported projects such as the refurbishment of the children’s ward at Helderberg Hospital, Somerset West, the waiting room at the Strand Victim Support Centre and the peace clock on the Strand beach front. ) View the video footage of the induction on DistrictMail’s website (www.districtmail.com).

Members of the incoming board are (from left) rotarian Lee Gabriel, Mark Williams (past president), Deidre Peterson (secretary), Kobie Farmer (president), Peter Kaufmann (president elect), Portia Motjuwadi (public relations), Martin Gerbers (treasurer) and Anne Hattingh (membership).

Small Room Sunday

Small Room Sunday to perform at Melt’s The band, Small Room Sunday, will be performing at Melt’s Tavern in Gordon’s Bay on Saturday 12 July, from 21:00 till late. The lead singer Neill Burger, guitarist Niel Rossouw and drummer PJ Franzsen were members of the Drostdy Technical High School band in Worcester during 2006, where they played together for the first time. The band members went their separate ways after finishing high school. In July 2009 Neil Burger and Niel Rossouw reunited in Stellenbosch, where they started a project known as Niellville. This acoustic cover band was very popular, performing live every Thursday night for two years ongoing at De Akker, a popular student hangout in Stellenbosch. The performance started 08:00 in the evening and usually ended during the early morning hours. In June 2010, both Neils asked PJ Franzsen and his brother, Rossouw Franzsen, to join the band with PJ on drums and Rossouw on bass for a project known as Tuesday’s Gone. After two

years, Rossouw had to leave the band because of a very good work/study opportunity and the band had no choice but to get a new bass player. PJ Franzsen recommended one of his friends, Deon Knipe, who joined the band and met Niel and Neill with a 30 min rehearsal just before a 4 hour long gig. The band didn’t know what to expect for the evening, but the immediate unexpected connection between four brilliant down to earth musicians can never be explained and resulted in another very successful show. After two years, they had enough songs of their own and changed the name to Small Room Sunday in remembrance of their first band practice in a little room on a Sunday afternoon, in Robertson. They have performed with artists such as Anton Goosen, Gian Groen, Ollie Viljoen, Gerald Clark, Albert Frost and Akkedis and have opened for bands like Die Heuwels Fantasties, Karin Zoid and AKING. They regularly play at annual festivals like Breedekloof Wine Festival, Wacky Wine Festival, KKNK and Big Blues Festival.

Foo Fighters to hit South African shores Last week it was announced that the American post-grunge rock band the Foo Fighters will be performing on South African soil later this year as a part of their worldwide tour. The Foo Fighters will be performing in Cape Town on Wednesday 10 December and in Johannesburg on 13 December. The Foo Fighters were born out of the 90s grunge band Nirvana, after lead singer Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Nirvana’s drummer, Dave Grohl, released an album by himself, under the title Foo Fighters. Later he got thebandtogether, whichnowincludesformer Nirvana touring bandmate guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel, drummer Taylor Hawkins and lead guitarist Chris Shiflett. The band has released seven albums and have won four Grammys. Visit www.bigconcerts.co.za for more information.

Be clever — buy low, sell high! Having just returned from a holiday in Europe, I am again reminded of the concept of price vs value. South African travellers need to brace themselves regarding price and value, and value in particular. Our weak rand means that everything from a cup of coffee to a T-shirt is expensive. This is fine, assuming that you have budgeted adequately; travel is, after-all, an enriching experience, which is worth every cent. It is the concept of value for money that is the hardest to digest. I use the word “digest” for a reason, because the concept of value is never more evident than when eating out. A basic meal, which may include a jug of house wine, will set you back around 40 to 50 Euro for the night, which at current exchange rates is R600 to R750. It is not the price that leaves you with indigestion, but rather the comparison of what you could have enjoyed at home for the same value. As human beings we are very good at spotting value; everybody loves a sale and most are happy to eat out on Monday nights for a cheaper special. However, when it comes to investing we continually get it wrong. Our instinctive valuation skills seem-

ingly fail us, acting in reverse as fear and greed lead us to buy expensive assets at top-of- the-market prices and then to sell cheap assets at the bottom of the market for a loss. Value investing is about determining the underlying intrinsic value of a business, which may vary materially from the current trading price, depending on market sentiment. A good example would be the value of platinum shares. The intrinsic value of the mine would be determined by the amount of platinum reserves in the ground and reasonable assumptions around normalised earnings, whereas current market prices trade well below the intrinsic value of these businesses especially due to the economic effects of the recent strike action. Unfortunately average investors very seldom show the ability to overcome their instinctive behaviour to exploit mispricing opportunities. This is why I firmly believe in the valueadd from active management and ongoing advice.

Helderberg granddaughter Louise Hoepfl (10) and her grandfather, Len Walker (69) have challenged one another to knit scarves for Masikhule’s Cast On 4 Kids project for Mandela Day.

Spend 67 minutes knitting for outreach CASSY VAN EEDEN The local outreach organisation Masikhule is challenging all Heldeberg Gazette and DistrictMail readers to spend their 67 minutes for Mandela Day knitting for a good cause: Cast On 4 Kids. Masikhule has partnered with Blankets of Hope in Somerset West and are hoping to have a massive donation by 18 July. “Knit a scarf, or a part of one,

or squares for blankets and hand it in,” said Masikhule’s spokesperson Sandy Immelman. The best part is, if you cannot knit, you can donate wool to either Silver Oaks or Aanhouwen, who have many people willing to knit but simply do not have wool. Teachers and carers in the communities that Masikhule works with have also offered to join in the knitting, but need wool and knitting needles.

The organisation is asking that all scarves and blankets be given to them by 18 July. “Please challenge your friends and family, clubs and colleagues to spend just 67 minutes knitting for Cast On 4 Kids,” said Immelman. Contact Sandy Immelman at Masikhule for more information about Cast On 4 Kids by emailing masikhule1@gmail. com or visit www.masikhule. org.

Galjoen, dassie, wildeperd and steenbras come on the bite I received reports of some good catches from numerous sources this weekend when the weather cleared and became more conducive for fishing. Some great galjoen catches were reported at several spots all along our beaches and reefs. On Friday Dennis Martin, a Strand angler, took advantage of collecting his quota of red bait both fresh and rotten. That same afternoon he landed four galjoen and two dassies from Blake’s Beach. On Saturday he also had his quota of galjoen, two dassies and one wildeperd. He mentioned that the water dropped very rapidly on both days and he found that the galjoen only took the rotten red bait and when he used fresh bait only dassie and wildeperd were caught. Joe le Roux, spokesperson for the False Bay Angling Club, mentioned that many of the Western Province anglers were practising sharkfishingatGansekraalonthe West Coast. He said they were fortunate to catch and release a large number of cow sharks, which were present there during the weekend. Some of the sharks weighed up to 80 kg and provided ample practise for most members. False Bay rock and surf club member, Willem de Jongh, fished

on Macassar beach on Saturday and Sunday and had his quotas of galjoen and white steenbras. Willem also returned a few smaller steenbras to the water. Joe le Roux and Renier Kemp, who fished at Rietfontein on Friday, had kob, galjoen, one belman and one dassie. Joe mentioned that it was unfortunate that so much kelp was in the water and on the beach at the time. There are still reports of good catches of white steenbras from Struisbaai plaat. Alan du Plessis, using bloodworm as bait, tagged and released an 8 kg and 10 kg steenbras and a number of small fish. While fishing from Struisbaai plaat, Jan Brink also released a few size steenbras and caught a 2,5 kg kob. On Sunday local anglers beached a belman of 2,5 kg at Gant’s pipe. ThesnoekrunsaroundtheCape are disappointing at present but there are plenty of snoek at Stompneus Bay at present. Transport cost and deterioration of equipment are causing the high price between R60 and R90 a snoek locally. For all your reel repairs and services contact Art on 021 854 3831. National selection wins sports star award for karateka Anke JAMEY GORDON “If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.” This is the philosophy that drives karateka Anke Smit (16) from Gordon’s Bay. The Grade 11 Rhenish Girls’ High School pupil represented South Africa in the second African Youth Games held in Botswana in May. This follows after this talented karateka was placed first in the Karate South Africa (KSA) trials in Bloemfontein earlier this year, securing her place on the national team. Anke claimed bronze for sterling performances in kumite for her weight division (over 58 kg), as well as her unison kata, performed with team-mates Natalie Faint and Cheyenne Barros. Thís prestigious achievement also earned her June’s DistrictMail Let’s Play Sport Star award. Anke discovered her passion for karate at the age of five, when she took up the sport. She says developing a love for the sport was inevitable, as her parents and both her brothers practise karate and are all still actively involved. Anke represented Boland in her first competition, the annual triangular karate competition held in Oudtshoorn at the age of nine. Anke’s mother Birgitt says her daughter was heartbroken when she lost the competition, but didn’t let it get her down. Instead, she was motivated by her older brother, Jens who also represented Boland in the competition and won first prize. Anke represented South Africa at the Karate Commonwealth Games in Scotland in 2008; Johannesburg in

In April, Anke and six students of Funakoshi Karate International, South Africa made their way to Europe to participate in an international style gushku in Germany. They then went to Belgium were they participated in a seminar with world-renowned World Karate Federation fighter Junior Lefevre before competing in the Edwin Ward Trophy tournament, where they won gold for kata and kumite. Anke reckons the highlight of her karate career so far has been the African Youth Games where athletes from 51 African countries partici-

pating in 21 sport codes competed for top honours while new friendships were forged along the way. The SA Sports Olympic Committee recently flew all the medal winners to Johannesburg where the Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula acknowledged the achievements of these athletes and handed them cheques. Anke’s dream is to participate in the world championships and is working hard to make it a reality. With guidance from her mother, who is also her instructor, Anke aims to perfect her craft with practice sessions in their dojo at home four times a week, for about an hour or more at a time “Most importantly I strive to adhere to the five maxims of karate: character, etiquette, self-control, sincerity and effort,” concludes Anke.

BROTHERS EXCEL: Brothers Armand (left) and Juan Burger (right) from Beaumont Primary School were recently selected for the Western Province u.11 and Western Cape u.13 cricket teams respectively. Armand (grade 5) and Juan (grade 7) are both talented all-rounders. Armand is also a good off-spin bowler while Juan is the u.13A captain at Beaumont. Both will be representing their respective teams in national cricket weeks later on in the year.

A 5 km fun runner crosses the finish line with two spooky looking spooks in hot pursuit.

Great turnout of young and old for Spookhill race Just over 1 000 runners toed the line for the start of the 34th Fine Food & Wine Spar 15 km Spookhill road race run on Saturday 29 June. The road race, organised by Helderberg Harriers, was run in ideal conditions with an additional 225 fun runners running in the 5 km fun run, which was a fitting tribute to the sponsor, the late Theo Espost, in whose memory the race was ran. The cool, crisp air made excellent

running weather to take on the challenge of running up some of the steepest hills in the Helderberg, which include the notorious Silwerboomkloof Road, where most runners are reduced to a walk at some stage or other. A few runners however were not put off by the hills. In the men’s race Mthandazo Qhina from the Nedbank club held off a fierce challenge from Vuyolwethu Mbukushe (RCS Gugulethu club) to not only win the race but the King of the Mountain challenge as well. He won the race in an

excellent time of 49:55, almost a minute ahead of Mbukushe. For Qhina it was a happy return to his 2011 race, which he also won and improved on his previous time of 50:18. The ladies race was a fiercely contested event between Zintle Xiniwe and Bulelwa Simae. Simae was the first lady to crest the highest point to become the 2014 Queen of the Mountain, but Xiniwe eventually got ahead of her to beat her by a mere 5 seconds in 57:18.

This year was also a happy return for Xiniwe, to add to her win in the rainy 2010 event, when she won in 1:02:08. A remarkable feat of this year’s race is that both ladies finished in under 59 minutes, the first time since 1995 that women have run the course in under 59 minutes. The popular 5 km fun run attracted quite a large number of runners younger than 15 years. On the other end of the age scale there were also quite a few 60 plus par-

RUGBY PREMIER A LEAGUE: KRAAIFONTEIN SHOCK THE NAVY TRAIN

Sir Lowrians slip down the log Sir Lowrians suffered a shock 21-19 defeat at the hands of Kraaifontein in a Premier A League match played in appalling conditions at Sir Lowry’s Park on Saturday. This completely unexpected result was also the Navy Train’s first loss to date this season. After five days of rain before the game the field looked like a mud bath which made handling difficult. Sir Lowrians however seemed to adapt to the conditions well and ran in three tries in the first half to lead 19-7 at half time. A few minutes into the second half Sir Lowrians key play-maker Earl Rose (No 10) was red carded and sent off the field reducing the team to 14 men for the remainder of the game. Sir Lowrians had to then move one of their centres into the flyhalf position which exposed a gap in their backline. Kraaifontein took full advantage of the situation and attacked with everything they had to eventually win the match 2119. A spokesperson for Sir Lowriaans, Sulaimaan Moller, said after Rose was sent off the field they fell apart. He added that in the second half they missed four penalty attempts as well as three try-scoring opportunities. “In the second half the field was a complete mess and both packs of forwards were unable to scrum properly and kept slipping in the mud. “The lineouts were also a big mess and nothing seemed to work for us. “The players also tried to run the ball and made too many wrong options with the ball in hand which ultimately led to us losing the match.” Moller said that this game was a big wake-up call for Sir Lowrians and some harsh words were spoken to the players at practise on Monday night and they all now know what is expected of them for the remaining seven games this season. “We have a two-week lay off now which will be good to clear up niggling injuries and focus on the games ahead. “We’re definitely still in with a good chance to win the league and I believe we can still do it,” he said.
