Welcome to our new programme. We have a fantastic summer of art, craft and creativity coming up, with lots for everyone of all ages to enjoy. Women’s Work showcases some incredible creations by pioneering women in textiles, ceramics and fine metalworking. These women played a huge part in the 20th century craft revival, taking traditional skills and reinventing them as something new and modern. As Ethel Mairet wrote: ‘Dyeing is an art; the moment science dominates it is an art no longer, and the craftsmen must go back to the time before science touched it, and begin all over again’. Many of these women are less well known than they deserve, so we’ll be shining a spotlight on them and their practice through talks, hands on workshops and a feminist Wikipedia edit-a-thon to put them into the world’s online encyclopedia. In May we’ll be taking part in the Artist’s Open House Festival with Colour Journeys: Natural Dyeing in Contemporary Practice, an exhibition of work by twelve artists and makers in different disciplines who all use natural dyeing, learned at the museum, in their work, and hosting a display of work by Ralph Levy, an exceptional craftsman from the village who sadly died this year.

Later in June we will be setting up a large scale George Maxwell loom from our collection in the museum for a residency by a contemporary weaver. There has been a real resurgence of interest in weaving recently, and its relevance to slow fashion and ethical production is obvious. Come and meet the maker and find out more. There’s more going on than I can talk about here, or than will fit in the brochure. Sign up for our newsletter, check the website and follow us on social media to ensure you don’t miss out. See you here soon! Steph Fuller Director, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft 2

PERMANENT COLLECTION

The picturesque South Downs village of Ditchling has lured many creatives over the years; perhaps the most notable were the group of internationally renowned artists and craftspeople who lived in the village at the turn of the 20th century, whose work and lives are celebrated in Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft. The museum holds many of their works, forming an internationally important collection and offering visitors the rare opportunity to see these special objects and works of art and craft in the village where they were created. The significance of this collection is better understood in the context of the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic’s history: when the Guild was formed by Eric Gill and Hilary Pepler in Ditchling just over 100 years ago, many followed to learn and be inspired by the skills and methods they championed. The result was an incredible body of skillfully crafted work: Gill’s sculpture, wood engraving and lettercutting, David Jones’ paintings, Hilary Pepler’s printing and puppets, Valentine KilBride’s weaving, Dunstan Pruden’s silverwork, Joseph Cribb’s lettercutting and stonework and Desmond Chute’s carving. From the village itself comes Edward Johnston’s calligraphy and typefaces, Ethel Mairet’s weaving and Frank Brangwyn and Louis Ginnett’s paintings.

Our permanent collection showcases the core crafts for which the village became internationally significant: direct carving, calligraphy, typography and lettercutting, weaving and natural dyeing, letterpress and wood engraving, and silversmithing. WOMEN’S WORK: Pioneering Women in Craft, 1918 – 1939

4 May – 13 Oct 2019

This year, Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft celebrates the work of incredible craftswomen with a major new show exploring an overlooked period of intense creativity following the Arts + Craft movement. Featuring over 150 pieces by silversmiths, weavers, textile designers and potters, Women’s Work takes a triumphant look at inspiring female makers and their unique methods and designs. Women’s Work focuses on a core group of craftswomen – weavers Ethel Mairet, Elizabeth Peacock, Alice Hindson and Rita Beales; potters Katharine PleydellBouverie, Dora Billington and Denise Wren; silversmith Catherine ‘Casty’ Cobb and hand-block textile printers Enid Marx, Phyllis Barron and Dorothy Larcher. Respected as teachers as well as makers, the craftswomen were championed by female entrepreneurs and gallery owners and various networks were formed. Look out for these 5

networks in the ephemera, letters they sent to each other and even designs named after one another, such as Barron and Larcher’s textile named ‘Mairet.’ Many of the craftswomen have a strong connection to the village of Ditchling as well. Notably Ethel Mairet, who saw countless makers pass through her workshop Gospels.

Feeling inspired? The season is packed full of events and workshops to accompany the exhibition. Why not learn about the natural dyes used by Ethel Mairet or try your hand at block printing inspired by Barron and Larcher? Our series of talks explores the networks, rivalries and friendships of the craftswomen, as well as highlighting some of today’s most exciting female makers. Also look out for two Feminist Wikipedia edit-a-thons bookending the season. These events will pay homage to forgotten female makers on 1 June and 12 October. Volunteers are invited to work with us and our experts to put information about 20th century craftswomen into the public domain. We are delighted to dedicate this programme to the oft-forgotten, radical craftswomen who were pioneers of the Arts & Crafts movement.

Disruption, Devotion and Distributism Saturday 19 October 2019 – April 2020 From the early 20th century Ditchling has been a magnet for artists, makers and others who came to the village as a place to make a new kind of life and create work in an environment conducive to alternative thinking. Drawing on the museum’s outstanding collection including never before seen work from the St Dominic’s Press Disruption, Devotion and Distributism will explore the ideas and politics of Ditchling artists and craftspeople, many of which still seem resonant today. 25
