LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COLLECTION + VILLAGE

Cover image: Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic Safe Door, painted by David Jones. This page: St Dominic’s Press Pamphlets. Photography by Tessa Hallmann.

Hello and welcome to our Winter season programme Our new main exhibition Disruption, Devotion + Distributism showcases

recently acquired works printed by the St Dominic’s Press, together with linked material from our collection. Some of these objects have never previously been seen in public. The ideas of the Guild of St Joseph + St Dominic; living simply; self sufficiency; fairness in distribution

of resources as well as their artistic beliefs in truth to materials and the creation of simple, good quality objects are still very resonant today. The Guild, which was founded 100 years ago, weren’t afraid to stand in opposition to prevailing social norms and lived lives they felt were meaningful. We also have Kitching In Ditchling, a complementary exhibition of work by this great contemporary typographer, designer and letterpress printmaker. Alan Kitching is a great enthusiast for Eric Gill and the work of the St Dominic’s Press so it’s a great companion to the show. Alongside we have a mix of talks dealing with the historic material in more depth as well as linked contemporary ideas and residencies, drop-in events and more in depth workshops so you can find out more or get your hands dirty as you prefer! Check our website for updates and additional events. Do ask about family activities if you come with children and don’t forget under 18s go free. Hope to see you soon! PERMANENT COLLECTION

The picturesque South Downs village of Ditchling has lured many creatives over the years; perhaps the most notable were the group of internationally renowned artists and craftspeople who lived in the village at the turn of the 20th century, whose work and lives are celebrated in Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft. The museum holds many of their works, forming an internationally important collection and offering visitors the rare opportunity to see these special objects and works of art and craft in the village where they were created. The significance of this collection is better understood in the context of the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic’s history: when the guild was formed by Eric Gill and Hilary Pepler in Ditchling 100 years ago, many followed to learn and be inspired by the skills and methods they championed. The result was an incredible body of skilfully crafted work: Gill’s sculpture, wood engraving and lettercutting, David Jones’ paintings, Hilary Pepler’s printing and puppets, Dunstan Pruden’s silverwork, Joseph Cribb’s lettercutting and stonework, Valentine KilBride’s weaving and Desmond Chute’s carving. From the village itself comes Edward Johnston’s calligraphy and typefaces, Ethel Mairet and Frank Brangwyn’s weaving and Louis Ginnett’s paintings.

DISRUPTION, DEVOTION + DISTRIBUTISM: The politics and philosophy behind the art and craft of Ditchling 19 Oct 2019 – 19 April 2020

Brazen, political and provocative works take centre stage for this exhibition at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft. The pieces in Disruption, Devotion + Distributism are drawn from a major acquisition of over 400 St Dominic’s Press pamphlets and posters, acquired through the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2017. The private press was set up by printer Hilary Pepler and published a wide range of material including books and pamphlets for The Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic and other artists and thinkers sharing their philosophy around craftsmanship and life. These special items are now displayed in public for the first time in a show that explores the values and beliefs of the extraordinary group of craftspeople and artists living in Ditchling at the turn of the 20th Century. Over 200 outstanding objects have been brought together for the exhibition. Printed material is presented alongside items from the museum’s permanent collection to offer a compelling perspective on the ideas and philosophy which drove the artists’ move to Ditchling. The exhibition includes never-before-seen pieces by Eric Gill, Ethel Mairet and Valentine KilBride. 5

Disruption, Devotion + Distributism will take the visitor on a tour of the underlying ideas and beliefs which led artists like Edward Johnston, Hilary Pepler and Eric Gill to Ditchling, and their engagement with and influence on wider debates taking place nationally and internationally in the early 20th century. The exhibition pulls at the Guild’s core principles – a resistance to industrialisation and city-living, their devout Catholicism and a commitment to Distributism, a political movement that championed individual land ownership in rural communities. Feeling inspired? The season is packed full of events and workshops to accompany the exhibition. Why not try your hand at wood engraving or calligraphy at one of our new year taster workshops? Or get that festive feeling while making your own letterpress Christmas cards? Whether you’re 1 or 101 there is plenty on offer at Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft.

KITCHING IN DITCHLING: The London Series – Alan Kitching

19 Oct 2019 – 19 April 2020 Inspired by the bold and spirited typography of Hilary Pepler, contemporary letterpress maestro Alan Kitching presents Kitching in Ditchling: The London Series in the William + Margaret Rowling Gallery to accompany Disruption, Devotion + Distributism. Alan Kitching has spent most of his professional life in London, exploring and enjoying its iconic landmarks as well as its more obscure nooks and crannies. His new series with Karoline Newman ‘Alan Kitching’s A to Z of London’ captures his favourite haunts in the capital, marrying the individual letters of the alphabet with its significant buildings, monuments, sports grounds and retailers. The 26 prints will be accompanied by a number of Kitching’s other prints that celebrate the capital. Alan Kitching is one of the world’s foremost practitioners of letterpress typographic design and printmaking. He is renowned for his expressive use of wood and metal letterforms in creating visuals for commissions and limited-edition prints. He values the slow articulation of letterpress much as Pepler and Gill did, rejecting the speed and dispensability of modern technology and revelling in the simple joys of making. #KitchingInDitchling 7
