Elevant Music takes off Record Label in a Box has helped hundreds of musicians and entrepreneurs all over the world set up and run their own successful record label, including Michael Edwards, who turned his industry ambitions into a reality when he founded Elevant Music Limited. When Michael set up Elevant Music limited it was just him and his determination to succeed. ALEXIS We spoke to Brendan from Alexis Kings about the band’s career highlights, plans for the future, and experience working with Ditto Music. Like many bands, the founding members of Alexis King first met during their school days, brought together by a mutual love of making music. However, it took them a few years of casual jamming, a break for university, and a change in the band’s line-up before they started to take their music career seriously. “We met in school, me and Sam the guitarist”, says Brendan when asked
about the band’s origins. “We were good mates in school, and the band was something we just kept going with. We released our first few tracks in sixth form when we were 18, but then we took a bit of a break for around 3 years, as we went to different universities. At the time we were gigging out of London whenever we could, but couldn’t really take it too seriously. After uni we started taking it much more seriously. That’s when we made our EP Squire and it
was full speed ahead. We got some new people in the band at that time too, people we’d met during the journey, you might say, and now we’ve been together about six years.” Playing live and putting on a killer show can make or break an emerging band like Alexis Kings, so it was interesting to hear how to band’s live shows have evolved, and learn about their gig plans for the coming years.

S KINGS “Our very first gig was at Charlie Browns in Luton on Christmas Eve around six years ago – it was shite, but it was funny! We were so bad, absolutely mega shit. We barely practiced and I got really drunk – I must have been nervous.”
The band has come a long way since those days though, and according to Brendan the gigs are now coming thick and fast. “These days we play live at least once or twice a week. We had two festivals on one day this weekend, and we’ve got one
festival and one gig in a couple of weeks’ time. And that’s what we’re going to keep doing. We don’t travel a lot though at the moment. That’s something else we’re going to start doing now. We might be getting new management soon, so we’ll have someone sorting our gigs out for us. That’s the pain in the arse side of being in a band, organising gigs, so it’ll be great to have someone to help”. The conversation turns to the Alexis Kings’ influences and signature sound, and it’s clear there’s an eclectic
combination of inspirations across the band members. “We got a mixture of influences between us. Me and Sam were mainly into the Rolling Stones, Kasabian, Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys and The Doors. Whereas Fabio’s mad into Slipknot, Deftones and bands like that, which is great because he brings a lot of energy when we perform live.”
“The new EP if very diverse. Each song is very different and hard to categorise. The only band we’ve be likened to from Squire is Kings of Leon
but I don’t hear it myself. I’d say it’s maybe a bit ‘Stonesy’, or more Courteeners and Oasis. It’s a very original EP; I don’t really have a clue who you’d liken us to.” Alexis Kings started working with Ditto Music in May 2016. They had a back catalogue of incredible tracks and a live show to match, but needed to get the word out about their music with a professional PR, social media and radio plugging campaign. Brendan spoke about the band’s close relationship with
Ditto Music, and how their campaigns have helped with their recent success. “It was great working with Ditto and learning how the PR process works. They were very good at communicating with us and showing us everything that they were doing. No matter what there’d be someone getting back us. They helped us loads with our emblem, our social media and how we promote ourselves. Ditto’s radio plugger got us played on Radio One and Radio 2XS in Sheffield, which is actually where a lot of people say they first heard us and tweet at us about it.”

But for the time being the band is working on a new single and a new tour which they hope will receive the same response as Squire. Brendan explained their plans for the rest of the year and beyond.
“We will book a tour for this year. We’re going have management coming into play soon which will really help,and we’ve got two big shows coming up which we’re looking forward to. We’re working on our new single Tokyo Skyline right now, which will be coming out in the next two months or so. It’s got the same vibe as Squire; we’re excited to get more music out there.”

Karybdis wanted to reach more people with their music and engage with their fans through social media channels. They were also interested in increasing their number of followers in order to promote their upcoming gigs and releases to a wider audience.
The Ditto team put in place a 6-week campaign to help Karybdis make a bigger impact on social media, with an engaging posting schedule designed to increase their reach and engagement. After the campaign, the band’s engagement was five times higher and their reach grew to an incredible 360,000. They also experienced a 21% increase in fans and followers.
