Overview What were the results of tourism development in 2017?
2017 was a breakthrough year for the Vietnamese tourism industry when Vietnam was first in the list of countries with the fastest tourism development in the world, and the fastest in Asia. This shows that Vietnam's tourism is increasingly positioned in the international arena.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan General Director of VNAT shares his views with Leisure & Travel magazine on the prospects of Vietnam tourism.
Could you please describe the goal for tourism to become a leading economic sector?
The Resolution 08-NQ/TW dated 16/01/2017 of the Politburo set a target for tourism development that by 2020, the tourism industry will become a key economic sector, creating an impetus for socio-economic development, attracting about 20 million foreign tourists, contributing over 10% of GDP, and bringing total revenue of USD 35 billion. By 2030, tourism will become a real key economic sector, making Vietnam the leader in tourism development within Southeast Asia.
In 2017, Vietnam received more than 12.9 million international visitors, up 29.1% over 2016; and with more than 73.2 million domestic visitors, up 18.1% over 2016. Total revenue from tourism reached nearly USD 25 billion, up 27.5% over 2016. The contribution of tourism is estimated at 7.5% of GDP. The number of international visitors to Vietnam in 2017 reached two records: the highest number of visitors and the highest increase within a year (3 million). Following that momentum, in the first three months of 2018, Vietnam has received 4.2 million international visitors, an increase of 30.9% over the first quarter of 2017. It is predicted the country will reach a target of 16 million international visitors in 2018.
What is your view on sustainable tourism development?
Sustainable development of the tourism sector is an important focus of Vietnam's commitment to international efforts, and our fulfilment of the UN's Sustainable Development Objective by 2030. Sustainable tourism development is an important requirement and objective for Vietnam tourism in maintaining and enhancing competitiveness.

Can you tell us about Vietnam’s policy and perspective on casino business?

The Government of Vietnam issued Decree No. 03/2017 / ND-CP dated 16/01/2017 and Circular No. 102/2007 / TT-BTC on casino business.
resorts, which can operate for four seasons. At the Asia-Pacific Golf Conference (APGS) in October 2017, Vietnam was awarded as the most attractive golf destination in AsiaPacific. This proved that Vietnam was truly a golf destination that has attracted golfers from around the world.
According to the regulations, casino business is a conditional business subject to strict control by the government. Only those businesses that are granted a certificate of eligibility will be allowed to operate a casino. Vietnamese people are allowed to play at the Casino for a pilot period of 3 years under certain conditions. As such, operating a casino business in Vietnam is being implemented to a suitable roadmap to promote tourism growth. However, in the beginning phase, pilot implementation is needed, followed by an evaluation for more effective implementation, especially in the EEZs that are expected to be established.
What do you think about golf tourism?
At present, Vietnam has a series of international standard golf courses along the country in association with luxury
We have identified golf tourism as a market segment that does bring high-profile guests, with high spending ability and long stays that can positively affect tourism growth in Vietnam. That’s why, at present, we have organize advertised golf tours in Vietnam; cooperating with Thailand to organize crosscountry golf tours. We are also planning to organize many programs and events promoting golf tourism to Vietnam.

Vietnam has become an ideal destination for Korean tourist 한국인에게 사랑받는 여행지가 된 베트남 According to Mr. Keum Gi Hyung, Director of Korean Cultural Center in Vietnam, Vietnam has become a tourism hub in the South East Asia region, especially for Koreans travelers. The number of Korean visitors in Vietnam has increased remarkably from 1 million in 2015 to 2.4 million in 2017. After the first quarter of 2018, Vietnam has received 900,000 Korean visitors. Beside the delicious cuisine, hospitable people, magnificent natural sights, Vietnam should make a lot of improvements in terms of traffic safety, professional tourist guide training and more affordable tours, Mr. Keum Gi Hyung suggests. During the Vietnam International Travel Fair 2018, Korean Cultural Center in Vietnam along with Busan’s Tourism Promotion Department signed contracts with several Vietnam tourím agent to encourage visitors between two nations ●

Data released by Airbnb recently puts two major cities of Vietnam - Hanoi and Da Nang - among the world’s top 10 intriguing travel destinations in 2018. The online marketplace and hospitality service Airbnb announced a list in which Da Nang ranked the fifth in booking surges of up to 255 percent, while Hanoi was ninth on the list with a 212 percent year-on-year increase over the same period this year ●

320 International art troupes to perform at Hue festival Hue festival에 참석하는 20여개 국제 공연단
Art troupes from at least 12 countries as well as Vietnam are scheduled to perform in the biennial Hue Festival, which will happen from April 27th to May 2nd in the former royal city of Hue. Hmong patterns become a national intangible cultural heritage 흐몽족의 전통무늬, 국제 무형 문화유산에 등재 This recognition marks the 6th national intangible heritages in Dien Bien. Traditional Hmong patterns come from the Hmong ethnic people in Sa Long commune, Muong Cha district, in the northwestern province of Dien Bien. A Chat with Sir Nick Faldo Golfing icon, Sir Nick Faldo has graciously spent time with us during his recent trip to Laguna Lăng Cô in central Vietnam (March 2018).
We all know the story. You’re watching Jack Nicklaus finish runner-up at the 1971 Masters and that inspired you to pick up the game?
I was looking for a sport. That’s my line. I played everything at school. I did cycling out of school, I went for tennis lessons and they said you’re too tall back then and in that era you’re meant to be Rod Laver size. I loved my sport and I was good at it. I was in every team and there was extra swimming outside of school as well. There were these guys in fancy colours round these trees. I love trees and I wanted an outdoor job and to be my own boss. Those were my two rules and so there was a new sport to try. So, I went to my mum the next morning and said, “Today,
I want to try golf.” They knew about Welwyn Garden City Golf Club and so they took me and I wandered into the pro-shop and booked my six lessons from the assistant pro, Chris Arnold. I said, “Right I’m ready”, and he said, “No, your first one is tomorrow”. So, what I learned from that now, especially with these kids, is that he installed discipline because the first lesson was the grip and the second was posture. Third lesson was alignment. I hadn’t hit a ball yet. Finally, on the fourth lesson, I hit a ball. Now, if anybody wants to learn, they hit a ball within 3 seconds. Show me that, give me a go. Unbeknownst to me, he installed that discipline of what it takes to build all of the fundamentals.
The Faldo Series has been something that has really materialised over the past few years. How far do you want to take that and where do you want to go next?
Well, things are going well. We’ve done 20-plus years of the series and have taken it all over the world, literally global, and I’ve created this new event, the Major Champions Invitational, so I’m chuffed about that. I’ve made something happen, brought together Major Champions with a real vehicle. Rory will pick players from his foundation, as will Adam Scott in Australia and Annika Sorenstam from all four corners of the world - the same as I will do from my series and my series winners. With this event we Major Champions have a really cool opportunity to say to junior golfers, 2018 Leisure & Travel magazine 35
“I have my eyes on you”. So this kid can be thinking, wow, Adam Scott thinks I’m a good golfer. We’ve created this event and I hope it’s successful and everyone says they want to come back next year and that it becomes instantly recognisable, which it should do with all the media attention because of its uniqueness. I hope that the kids who win, people will know that boy and that girl won the Major Champions Invitational, they are off and running in their golf careers. I said to myself, when you think of it, Samuel Ryder started a pretty darn good even and he was a seed merchant in St Albans, and Karsten Solheim created the women’s version, so why can’t there be a Faldo event of that magnitude in 20 years’ time.
Having watched you out on the Laguna Lăng Cô Golf Course earlier, It looks like a continuous push for the end goal.
We’re fortunate with this project. With a lot of projects they treat it as, well there is your design, put in in the ground then poof! You disappear. With this one, I started coming back for all sorts of reasons. Either to do something business-wise here and then we kept coming back for the golf and then we brought the Faldo Series here, so I’ve been coming back to this location almost twice a year for about six or seven years and we can keep adjusting the golf course. Keep fine-tuning. This thing is alive and you don’t know when you put the

golf course in what grass will grow and what won't. The jungle does this and that and all sorts of things. It’s been a good learning curve to be able to come back and keep fiddling with it, making it better and better. It looks good from last year. I remember coming and it was growing in and I assumed Da Nang is level with Bangkok and Bangkok is 90 degrees every day of the week. But on this land, they get cold weather here or chucks it down like you can’t believe, so the grass doesn’t want to grow anymore. We’ve learned a lot about these kinds of things and I’m enjoying it and I’m doing more. I go back to some of my other designs just to say, “Hi, how can I help?” and give it a nudge to keep it going and looking good. It has my name on it, so I

What features stand out on this particular course?
The coolest thing is how unique it is. When you tour it, you start in rice fields and the great thing about this is that it’s bringing it all back to the vision we had. It’s a tough project. It’s money, it’s time and it’s man hours, but we are bringing to life those first 4 holes through the rice fields. Then you go through a bit of jungle, so that’s different. Then you pop out on what was a lovely sand bar, a ridge that we placed a green on top of, very Aussie-style. Then we have the beach, so that’s another environment, and then we got the river down 10 which has really come to life with my new tee which brings the river back in play. Then you’ve got the rocks through 11, and you come out and go through more river and more jungle. Then you come to 15 green with all the sand. Not many golf courses have so many different visual or environmental changes which I think gives Laguna Lang Co good memorability. I would like people to be able to remember each hole. They all have their own
character. That’s important and tough to find. Some projects don’t have that.
Can you give us any insight into plans that you have or any changes that you can report on?
Just tinkering and putting new bunkers in. We’re putting a new bunker in on the third. They’ve done a great job of clearing it out and it’s really come alive. It was too difficult previously. There was rough that was like a wire brush, so I said: “Blitz it! Get rid of everything and give the golfers a chance. Blitz it all out the back of 5, 6 and 7 and make them look cool”. They’ve really managed to get the quality of the grass u, which has a lot do with nature and the cold and rain you get during the winter. It’s now looking good and it's looking manicured so I don’t think much else will be required. We actually might build another fun par-3 left of number 9, so we could actually shut down a hole with conditioning in mind from time to time, and golfers can play another fun little par-3 along the beach which would actually be very good.
What advice would you give Vietnam with this burgeoning golf market? Build more Faldo Design golf courses. The region is really picking up now. They had a tough time since 2008 and the financial crashes and what have you but things are really picking up and we are pursuing contracts for more projects. We’ve got another one in Vietnam. We possibly have one in Myanmar, one in Laos and maybe one in South Korea, so things are picking up in the region.
Do you feel quite at home here now?
Yeah I enjoy it here. I’m very lucky I get treated like royalty. This is almost like my own private hotel. It’s really cool to come back to waiters and waitresses who know what I want. I can say, “My usual please,” even though I’ve been gone for 6 months. The quality of life here is pretty darn good. I’ve got a beautiful villa on top of the rocks up there, you’ve got the spa appointments and you can come here and switch off.

I want to be like Coach Park Hang-seo 박항서 감독처럼 되고 싶다"
As a golfer and a professional coach of Korea’s young golf team, Jay Park comes to Vietnam with the will of contributing to the development of Vietnam golf industry. He is currently an instructor at Pure Performance Coaching Center – one of the most prestige golf institutes in Vietnam. How long have you been teaching golf?
I have been doing my job for 4 years including 3 years in Korea and 6 months in Vietnam.
How did you learn and practice golf in Korea?
I had to spend a lot of time practicing on the golf courses and driving ranges along with my coach and colleagues rather than just staying in school. As I remember, I had to hit 1,000 balls almost every day.
Why did you decide to continue your career in Vietnam?
I have been in Vietnam for almost a year now. The first time I visited Vietnam was in February 2016 during a training session at Ecopark Hanoi. Recognizing a promising 42 Leisure & Travel magazine 2018
prosperity of golf in the future, I decided to choose Vietnam as my next destination after retiring my career as a professional golfer.
What is your plan in Vietnam?
A few months ago, Coach Park Hang-Seo made history for Vietnam in football. Before that, Coach Choong-Gun also helped Vietnam earn its first Olympic gold medal in shooting. Thus, I want to become like them, bringing victories to this beautiful nation.
According to you, what is the most important quality as a coach?
Since each golfer has their own technique and physical condition, there is no standard program to apply for all of them. Therefore, I have to individually
study their swing to give the most precise feedback.
Which difficulty do you encounter when coaching in Vietnam? I must say communication. Though I speak English, there are times I cannot find the correct words to express my idea. I have to integrate my body language to make sure the message is accurately delivered and understood.
How has Pure Performance Coaching Center been supporting you?
My colleagues at PPCC are very friendly, kind and easygoing. PPCC itself has built a professional teaching system along with a huge number of students. Because of this, I have no difficulties in catching up and recruiting students. I am happy working here ●

✒ 골프를 가르친 지 얼마나 됐나요? 거의 4년이 되었고, 베트남에서는 그 중 6개월 동안 가르쳤습니다. 한국에서는 골프를 어떻게 연습했었나요?
한창 연습할 때엔 학교에서 지낸 시간보다 연습장에서 감독님, 동료들과 함께 지낸 시간이 더 많았어요. 제 기억으로는 그 때 당시 매일 공 1,000개를 쳤었어요.

Festival at Bat Trang

Idyllically set on the Red River (Song Hong), Bat Trang- the porcelain village- is a 40 minute drive from Hanoi Centre. This village has attracted many local and international visitors by its thousand-year tradition of making ceramics. In the full moon of February (Lunar Calendar), an annual festival is organized to honor the first ancestors of porcelain making. 도자기 마을축제 하노이 중심지와 그 외곽을 구분 짓는 역할을 해주는 홍강의 풍부한 수량을 따라 들어선 천년 역사의 도자기마을 Bat Trang(밧짱). 매년 음력 2월 15일에는 대대손손 이어온 가업인 도자기 기술을 드높이며, 자손들은 훌륭한 기술을 물려주신 조상을 기리는 축제가 열린다. 손자 손녀까지 3대가 새 옷을 입고 도란도란 이야기 꽃을 피우는 모습이 정답다.
축제 마을 주민들은 성황당(成隍堂)에서 나라를 수호한 6명의 성황신 제사를 치룬다. 마을 주민들은 평안과 번성을 위해 제사를 지내는 것을 이 축제 중 가장 중요한 의식으로 여긴다. 물을 모시는 의식, 신주( 神主)를 깨끗이 청소하는 의식, 성황당으로 신주를 모시는 의식 등을 경건하게 진행한다. 성황신에게 올리는 제사 음식으로는 구운 물소 한 마리, 제사 음식이 놓인 쟁반 6개, 찹쌀밥을 놓는 쟁반 4개를 포함한다. 제사가 끝난 뒤에는 제사음식을 주민들에게 나눠준다. 이 외에 장기, 인간 장기, 줄다리기 등 전통 놀이와 가창(hát Thơ)이 진행되고 밧짱 마을의 가장 정교한 수공예품들이 전시된다. 설립 역사 밧짱 도자기 마을은 이태조 왕이 호아르 (Hoa Lư)에서 다이라(Đại La)로 수도를 옮기면서 만들어졌다. 우여곡절이 많은 천년의 역사를 지닌 이 마을 주민들은 조상의 도자기 비법을 계승하고, 밤낮없이 가마에 불을 지피면서 베트남스럽고 정교한 상품을 제작한다. 밧짱 도자기는 베트남 내수시장은 물론이고 멀리 떨어진 5 대륙에까지 수출되며 정교한 수공예품을 생산하는 동네로 유명하다 ●

implied in your paintings?
ome paintings simply reflect the beauty of life and touch the viewer’s emotions. Others reflect the depth of the mind, thoughts, vibration and philosophy of life. I do not draw on orders or the liking of others, but rather draw the way that life affects me. I wish my art to be inspirational and meaningful, allowing viewers to find their own life and meaning in it. The real credit to an artist is to find sympathy among people, when art brings people together. To me, all things in this material world have souls. A flower has a spiritual life - the soul of a flower. When a flower blossoms, it’s at the peak of its life. If you place your soul inside a flower, you will see its spirit. Those who have ever seen a Epiphyllum bloom will have the feeling that it is so subtle, so fragile that only a slight noise can make its petals close.

✒ Why the faces?
The world where we live is very chaotic. We often look at things through faces. I started painting faces from 2009. These are not
The characteristic of traditional silk painting is diffusion. Watercolor on silk or on paper is often blurry, but I do it another way to control the spread of color in a specific area. Someone called me a ‘witch’ of silk paintings but I think it is very natural, this is just a modern application of the technique.
✒ Do you need a special kind of silk for paint?
Previously silk for painting could be ordered in many places, but according to my standard, silk must be strong, durable and thick, thus I order separately in Ha Nam. Now, the quality of this silk is so popular that it has become the norm, and silk-woven craftsmen have become very skillful, contributing to the revival of silk weaving careers.
✒ How much time do you take to complete a painting? I often do not answer this question, because I have 2 ways to define time. One is the ‘material time’ the artist spend on his work. And the second type is ‘art working time’ that is unmeasurable, which can be counted in a lifetime. That implies the artist’s own thinking, experience and expertise. The worldview and human life of the artist are shown on the paintings. It’s these factors for which time can not count.

✒ What is typical of Vietnamese silk painting?
Many European and Asian countries have cloth paintings but silk is only in Vietnam. Silk painting in Vietnam has many layers, by going through a process of painting and then brush it to put another color. After several dyes, the colors on the silk spread, creating a richer shade, and deeper colors. The better colors absorb inside, making a more beautiful painting. Like a woman the beauty and charm are hidden inside, and Vietnamese silk painting has followed in this direction. However, if you keep on these traditional techniques forever, painting art does not improve and grow, so I have to find out new ways to express.

✒ Who owns your paintings?
At present, I have a stable number of collectors, both Vietnamese and foreign. They became a group who pass on the passion to each other and wait for my new works to collect. Some see their lives in my paintings, others like the philosophy in them. I am happy to receive sympathy of the audience. I can say that the number of Vietnamese collecting my paintings is increasing, for some of them it is a way of investment. The historical region ong Bien Bridge is an iconic symbol of Hanoi that has survived for more than 2 centuries. In 1900, an 800m stone bridge was built over the Phung Hung Street, on the foundation of the East wall, which had been demolished several years back, to carry the railroad leading to Long Bien Bridge. This massive stone bridge includes 5 spans and 127 arches; on top of the still-living-neighborhood. Before its restoration in October, 1954, the empty arc spaces underneath the bridge were home to the homeless, as well as a bomb shelter. However, during the 70s and 80s, due to security problems, the authority decided to fill the spaces to ensure the sustainability of the bridge and the safety of the railroad. At first, Phung Hung Street was a sparse area. Up until 20-30 years later, the street was renovated and became quite charming, attracting more people to come and reside. The new residents were mostly foreigners like the upperclass French and Chinese, Indian merchants, or Vietnamese traders. Nowadays, this historical street is nothing more than a brick wall, a
dumpster, and a street market site that has gradually fallen into oblivion. The Phung Hung frescos In order to revive the memories of “ancient Hanoi”, the stone bridge over the Phung Hung Street has been innovated and transformed into an outdoor art exhibition. Each arch has become a painting portraying the city life of Hanoi now and then, from a food vendor lady, an old man on bicycle to traditional performances and arts. The street is now a new cultural zone for city dwellers and visitors. This project belongs to a program that brings art into living space. The effort is organized by UN-Habitat coordinated with the Korea Foundation and Hoan Kiem District People's Committee. Executed by a group of Vietnamese and South Korean artists, this meaningful project does not only help to preserve the 1000-year-old culture of the capital, but also strengthens the relationship between the two nations of Vietnam and South Korea. After 3 months of execution the street was finally opened on February 3rd, right before the Lunar New Year. Hanoi is looking forward to many similar projects like this in the future ●

ith its name deriving from “Lang Pho” which means “village and city”, A O Show is directed by Tuan Le, a German-Vietnamese world class juggling artist, choreographer and show director. He is also the one and only Vietnamese to participate in Cirque du Soleil -Canada as a solo artist. Presented in the new circus type of art performance, A O Show doesn’t follow a story line or script. For one hour, the audience will be amazed at how the
show progresses. Vietnamese rustic materials such as bamboo sticks and woven baskets are combined with acrobatic arts, contemporary dance and theatrical visual art, to creatively depict Vietnamese people and their heritage, telling the story of how the rural community adapts to urbanization. Throughout the show, an array of traditional music such as “Tuong” and “Don ca Tai tu” is added to surround the audience with Vietnamese dreams of life, survival and love.

With an area of nearly 4000m2 at Vincom Megamall, VCCA is designed with mobile walls that allow the space to be flexibly changed, making each exhibition design unique. Apart from the main exhibition area, the VCCA provides projection booths, crafting workshops, art classes, a library and cafeteria. presents the artwork of many generations of famous painters in Vietnam such as Truong Quan, Ngo Manh Lan, Thanh Chuong, Ta Huy Long, Vu Xuan Hoan and Dau Thi Ngoc Vinh. A highlight of the event is a giant ‘cricket’ 15m long, 4.5m, occupying the central space of the main room. Additionally, 3D sculptures and pop-ups, such as

How to make quang nam pork spring rolls?
Ingredients:
Rice paper: The rice paper is not too thick and dewretted to preserve its elasticity and starch aroma. Dipping sauce: This is the key ingredient which provides the overall taste of the whole dish. The dipping sauce has to be made from sea fish including mackerels and anchovies. When serving, mix with minced ginger, garlic, chilli and some lime to decrease the salty taste.

ue to the culture of agriculture in Vietnam, artisanal crafts were started and developed in certain rural individuals and families. Gradually, the crafts were handed on and spread throughout the village and beyond to other villages. Therefore, villages formed that specilized intensively in various crafts such as pottery, silk, wood carving, stone or bronze carving, lacquering… Although many artisanal villages have disappeared, statistics show that Vietnam still has nearly 2,000 craft villages. The Vietnamese government is very focused on promoting and conserving these local crafts including traditional Vietnamese products.
The promising future of Vietnamese Artisanal industry
These crafts are still actively practiced in thousands of specialised areas called “trade villages” situated in most provinces of the country. In certain villages, up to 90% of the population work in the production of certain crafts. The majority of crafts from minority ethnicities in Vietnam are made in trade villages. A few remarkable examples would be the Hmong fabrics dyed with indigo, the fine brocades worked by the Dao and the Lolo in the North, including hand woven textiles made in a wide variety of traditional patterns, colours and decorative detailing. The Khemers are known for their bowls, large plaited baskets and pouches made of natural or dyed reeds. Visiting the trade villages allows you to discover the local artisans in the workshops, to witness the local skill and creative craftsmen and to see their methods of production.
