Welcome to our new Look!

Welcome to the 2012 Spring Edition of the Unity Star! We’ve initiated the new year, and the 20th anniversary year of Diversity Week, with a little color and more insight into our programs, workshops and events. With a vibrant outlook on things to come, we hope you’ll join us in the diverse programing and evolution of the Office of Diversity Initiatives at UCF.

Celebrating 20 Years Diversity Week

started on a Wednesday. This leap year with its 366 days had many memorable events, such as: White South Africans voting in favor of reforms to end apartheid; the opening of Disneyland Paris; an outbreak of massive riots in Los Angeles following the acquittal of four police officers for the brutal beating of Rodney King; Hurricane Andrew decimating portions of south Florida when it hit at Category 5 strength; and the election of Bill Clinton as the 42nd President of the United States. 1992 was also a memorable year for UCF. Dr. John C. Hitt became the University of Central Florida’s 4th President ushering in the university’s

five strategic goals that have remained a guiding force for the past 20 years. The 4th goal, to become more inclusive and diverse, led President Hitt to establish a Diversity Task Force to study the UCF environment and make recommendations about ways to address diversity and inclusion at UCF. During this informationgathering phase, the Task Force, under the leadership of Dr. Valarie Greene King, initiated Diversity Week as a means of focusing attention on the existence of the task force, as well as to highlight the important role of diversity and inclusion in higher education. This first Diversity Week was a meager reflection of how we celebrate Diversity Week today. There was no Diversity Breakfast to kick off the

Director’s Corner Happy New Year!! The Office of Diversity Initiatives works diligently to make diversity and inclusion visible and active elements that permeate the life and values of the UCF community. Our vision is to position UCF as a center of excellence that is widely recognized as a higher education model in the areas of diversity, inclusion, and leadership. Our commitment is reified by programs, processes, and a wide array of training opportunities that promote social justice, enhance cultural competencies, and develop capacious leaders. As we begin 2012, I am pleased to communicate our ongoing commitment and dedication to the UCF goal of becoming more inclusive and diverse via a new look for our newsletter. The energy that has propelled this new look into existence was provided by Dayanara Hudson, Program Assistant, and recent addition to our staff. I encourage you to review our newsletter for information, activities, and of course, for details on the various training opportunities we offer. I also encourage you to welcome Dayanara to UCF.

Diversity Spotlight Leslie Aguilar, President International Training and Development, LLC Here at ODI, we aim to provide you with workshop experiences that take you beyond the classroom walls. This semester we’d like to welcome a guest facilitator with 20+ years of experience in the areas of diversity/inclusion education and presentation. International speaker, trainer and author Leslie C. Aguilar will be gracing us with her skills on Wednesday, March 28th, when she’ll be presenting one of her groundbreaking, video-based training programs: “OUCH! That Stereotype Hurts.” This program is meant to allow its viewers to “experience the impact of stereotypical comments, explore why people don’t’ speak up against stereotypes and other biased behaviors, and learn six techniques for speaking up without blame or guilt.” In addition to “Ouch! That Stereotype Hurts,” Leslie also authored “Ouch! Your Silence Hurts,” and is recognized as a thought-provoking speaker, facilitator, and curriculum developer

in the areas of Diversity & Inclusion and Cultural Competence. Leslie also has authored eLearning programs, two books and three instruments: Diversity Competencies Assessment™, Diversity Leadership 360˚™, and DiversiScan™: Scanning the Environment for Diversity-Related Issues and Opportunities. Leslie served on the national Workplace Diversity Special Expertise Panel – Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), 2005 – 2008. She is past-chair of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) Central Florida Chapter Diversity Council. Prior to establishing International Training and Development, LLC in 1992, Leslie was part of The Disney Company for 15 years. Florida Fallen Hero Quilt Project

F

rom November 1 through November 30, 2011, the UCF Library was proud to exhibit the Florida Fallen Hero Quilt Project. A joint sponsorship between the Office of Diversity Initiatives, the UCF Library, the UCF Community Veterans History Project and Veterans Services under SDES, the nine quilts were presented as part of several Central Florida events taking place in honor of Veterans Day 2011. For those who had the opportunity to visit the quilts, you saw that each 9.5” block displayed the name of a fallen service member within any of the five U.S. Military branches. These individuals were killed in action in either Iraq or Afghanistan. 2

Each piece ranged from our well known stars and stripes, touching symbolic interpretations by Mrs. Miller’s fourth grade class, to intricate detailing of patriotic significance. Initiated in 2005 by Linda Fliss of Titusville, the Florida Fallen Hero Quilt Project will continuously remind us to honor our service members each and every day. The project will be retired to the Museum of Science and History in Jacksonville, FL in January 2012. For more information, please visit http://nbbd. com/fallenheroes/. Celebrating 20 Years continued from page 1 week’s activities, and although there was a theme, no annual poster was developed for the event until 1996. Individuals and organizations were recruited to sponsor programs, but, back then, the general comment that this request received was, “Now, just what is Diversity Week?” Two decades of Diversity Week celebrations have provided numerous opportunities for us to enhance our awareness and understanding of diversity and inclusion. Through workshops, classes, speakers, and diverse

programs, we are steadily embracing cultural competency and social justice as critical elements of our goal to become more inclusive and diverse. The UCF community has come to acknowledge this activity as one of the annual events that is celebrated during the Fall Semester. And, although we are always looking to get greater buy-in and organizational commitment and participation, we are no longer confronted with the question, “Now, just what is Diversity Week?.”
