Workshop: Pizza for Peace Film Series (in collaboration with Dispute Resolution Services); pizza lunch included. Facilitators: Michael Freeman and Barbara Thompson Descriptions/Dates/Times/Location: All sessions will be held in the Research Pavilion, Suite 169. • Freedom Writers (DIV100): Thursday, 09/10/2009, 10:00 AM-1:00 PM Assigned the thankless task of teaching freshman English at a gang-infested Long Beach, CA high school, a 23-year old teacher, Erin Gruwell, resorts to unconventional means to break through to her hardened students. Her students had been written off, and her chances of succeeding scoffed at, but Gruwell wasn’t about to go down without a fight. This film, based on a true story, provides a unique perspective on the dynamics of power and privilege as both students and teacher learn to rely on each other to expand the realm of possibilities. • Murderball (DIV056): Monday, 10/26/2009, 10:00 AM-1:00 PM The documentary “Murderball” tells the story of a group of world-class athletes unlike any ever shown on screen. In addition to smashing chairs, it will smash every stereotype you ever had about the disabled. It is a film about family, revenge, honor, sex (yes, they can) and the triumph of love over loss. But most of all, it is a film about standing up, even after your spirit- and your spine- have been crushed. This documentary is rated R for language and sexual reference. • Crash (DIV101): Thursday, 11/19/2009, 10:00 AM-1:00 PM Issues of race and gender cause a group of strangers in Los Angeles to physically and emotionally collide in this drama revolving around the stories of a collection of interrelated characters including a police detective with a drugged-out mother and a thieving younger brother, two car thieves who are constantly theorizing on society and race, the white district attorney and his irritated and pampered wife, a racist white veteran cop (caring for a sick father at home) who disgusts his more idealistic younger partner, a successful Hollywood director and his wife who must deal with the racist cop, a Persianimmigrant father who buys a gun to protect his shop, a Hispanic locksmith and his young daughter who is afraid of bullets, and more. Crash provides a powerful glimpse at the costs of prejudice, bigotry, and intolerance. NOTE: Registration is individual for each session. Workshop: Leadership for the 21st Century Series Facilitators: Dr. Valarie King (9/15), Dr. Martha Stewart (10/1), Dr. Rosa Cintron-Delgado (10/15) Location/Dates/Times/Descriptions: All sessions will be held in the Research Pavilion, Suite 169. • Culturally Competent Leadership (DIV062): Tuesday, 09/15/2009, 3:00-5:00 PM Functioning as a leader in the 21st Century requires awareness, knowledge, and skills in many areas. This session explores cultural competency as a critical leadership issue in today’s diverse society. • Celebrating and Building our Leadership Diversity Successes: One Brick at a Time (DIV063): Thursday, 10/1/2009, 2:30-4:30 PM This session captures opportunities, challenges, and celebrations in the recruitment, retention, and induction of persons of color throughout the higher education spectrum. • Looking Beyond the Label “Hispanic”: Evading Differences, Advancing Similarities (DIV061): Thursday, 10/15/2009, 3:00-5:00 PM Have you ever wondered about the origins of the label “Hispanic”? In what ways is this label related to the Federal Government? Do Hispanics prefer Spanish over English? What color are Hispanics? What type of passport does a Puerto Rican carry? This session will address some of these sensitive and seldom discussed issues. Office of Diversity Initiatives PHONE: 407-823-6479

In this workshop, participants take, score, and interpret the Personal Learning Insights Profile so that they will better understand their own personal learning approaches. Recognition is given to the fact that differences in learning approaches is just another way in which human diversity manifests itself. Often framed in terms of microaffirmations, microinequities, and microgestures, each carries a message of inclusion, exclusion, or value. This workshop will focus on how micromessages occur and their effect on individual relationships, team performance, and student success. Strategies also will be discussed in addressing their impact. Workshop: High Heart Work & Self Care (DIV046) Facilitator: Michael Freeman Date: Tuesday 12/01/2009 Time: 2:30-4:30 PM Location: Research Pavilion, Suite 169 Description: Human service work demands a lot from those who address and meet critical needs. Often, as we are caring for others, we forget the most important person, ourselves. This workshop provides an overview of Dr. Payne’s work including the “hidden rules” among classes, the characteristics of generational poverty, and the significant role of available resources. NOTE: Workshop requires an interdepartmental transfer or cash/check payment of $10.00. Call (407)-823-6479 for details.

Diversity Philosophy We live in a global community that is becoming increasingly intertwined and interdependent. Demographic, technological, cultural, and economic changes no longer afford us the luxury of living in isolated enclaves. These dramatic shifts and trends require that our educational systems equip us to live and work with a wide variety of peoples. To survive and thrive in a modern organization like UCF means to understand that each of us is mutually connected to the other. An increasingly diverse society expects that higher education will meet the varied learning needs of its citizens by providing effective diversity instruction and experiences. To this end, the Unity Star distributed by this office represents opportunities available to UCF’s students, staff, and faculty to build understanding, appreciation, and respect for human diversity.
