ManuelElíaswasborninLima,Peru(1976)andgraduatedwithadegreein CommunicationSciencesfromtheUniversityofLima.Hisaffinitywithphotography beganasachildwhenhismothercommissionedhimtophotographfamilyeventsto encouragehimtocomeoutofhisintroversion.AlreadyattheUniversity,hisinterest inphotographytakesaconsciousturnandtransformsintohisconstantself-learning throughthismeansofvisualexpression.WhenhefirstvisitedNYCin2000andwas exposedtotheartisticandculturalmovementaroundphotography,hedecidedto movetothecitytopursuehispassionforphotographyandthuscontinuehis constantsearchtolearnandimprovehisphotographypractice.AlreadyinNYC, althoughhecontinuestophotographandexploreforms,techniques,andnarratives, itwasnotuntilheobtainedapositionatUNPhotoinNYCthathispracticegota boostofmotivation,subject,theme,style,andenergy.Hissensitivitytodetailinvites ustoexploremysterywithinthefamiliar,usingamoodyscenewhiledancingwith details,colors,andtextures.Heuseslightandcolorastheprotagonists;Perhapsas muchormoresothanthepeoplethemselves,heseducesdeeperintoits metaphoricalcharacter.Hisaestheticisavividprojectionofhowheexperiencesthe worldthroughameditativesight,apparentlyquietonitssurfacebutintriguing, confusing,andetherealonitscore.

Whilehertimeinadvertising andthecreativecommercial worldgaveheralot,astime wenton,shefeltagrowingpull tore-discoverthefocused, intense,solocreativeprocess sheexperiencedindeveloping originalart.Followinga summerspentcreatingher rosegardeninLondonand returningtothenatureofher childhood,theseartisticurges resultedinIskrareconnecting withherloveofart.She starteddrawingagainin earnest.Drawingfeltlikea cominghomeforIskra,which isreflectedinhercollection, “TheGardeninMe.”

Igetthatoften–anditistrue, itcanbereadasareferenceto humananatomy.Forme,itis moreaboutvitalororganic structuresingeneral. Ethnologydistinguishes betweenalterity(translatable otherness)and"alienity" (radicalotherness).Iguessmy workshavea"translatable other"character.Probably thereissomethingwitha universalappealtoitthat viewerscanidentifywith somethingtheyknow. Toansweryourquestion:Iam fascinatedbytheprocessof paintingthefirstlayer(very impulsively)andgettingto understandtheimagemore andmorewitheveryfollowing step.Forme,thesubjectitself needstostayopeninaway.I lovetooscillatebetween abstractionandphotorealistic matter,andIdoenjoy provokingandproviding associations(texture-wise).Of course,itisalso,toalarge

"MorbidOrbit"isaseriesof pasteldrawingsIdeveloped duringthelastmonth.Itisan ongoingseries.Thetitlehasa humorousnotetoit–butinthe sameway,itemphasizes somethingallofmyworks inhabit:Theshownimages orbitaroundsomethingwe coulddescribeasa visualizationofaliving condition.Thestructures remindoneofprimal-grown structures.Theyseemtobe vital,tender,andfragilebut,in thesameway,violentor threatening.Likefearor disgustcanmakeyoufeel reallyalive.Theexhibition offerstoexperienceimagesinbetweenthesepolarfieldsof tension.Besidestheactual "MorbidOrbit"series,whichwill beondisplay,visitorswillbe abletoseeseveraloil paintingsinstalledinarather strictclusteronrawconcrete
