The Joy Bells’ Bio The Joy Bells Singers were started in 1951 by James and Lucy Moore in Washington D.C. The group consisted of 20 member where they went around the local area singing God’s praises and ministering through song, after the passing of one of the member, Christabelle Wilson, the group decided to take some time off. During that time, other members passed away, some went into the ministry, and some went their separate ways and form their own group. Shelia Tarpley, who is an original member of the Joy Bells and one of the daughters of Mrs. Christabelle Wilson, who had passed away, decided that after a year or so of not performing, it was time to regroup and get back on the gospel singing circuit!!!! Mrs. Tarpley, who is also a preacher’s wife, a pianist, an awesome lead vocalist, a mother, and a woman of God, recruited five more singers, Faye Cobbs (sister), Clarnetta “CeCe” Tarpley (niece), Maria Carson (sister), April Bradley and Solangelo “Angel” Hodge (daughters), and a musician Kris Carter (cousin) who was also a pianist. The New Joy Bells went about the community and surround counties, Franklin, Henry, Pittsylvania, and Patrick singing the songs of Zion and lifting up the names of Jesus and it wasn’t long before the word got out that, hey, these ladies sounded like the Renowned, Grammy Award and Steller Awarding winning Clark Sisters. There was something special going on here! Singing engagements started to increase, there was bookings for the Joy Bells to do concerts and sing at choir and group anniversaries on the weekends, a full band was added, drums, lead and bass guitar, and piano, WOW, things were looking good and going their way, BUT it wouldn’t stay that way!!!! After being together for years and traveling the roads together, the demand for the Joy Bells increase and the conflict in work schedule of the band did also which put the Joy Bells at a cross road? What do we do? Do we cancel our engagements, do we seek for a new band, do we quit, or do recreate our sound and train ourselves to sing acapella???
P.4 www.divineconnectionsmagazine.com Well if you know the Joy Bells of today then you know the answer to that questions. The Joy Bells took a leap of faith and did something most group would have never tried, they went acapella. April was a drummer so she had the beats and tempos in her heart, in her hands and in her feet, all of the ladies in group were gifted singer with the ability to sing riffs, three and four part harmonies, sing soprano, alto, and even tenor, and when they collaborated that with foot stomping and hand clapping and a very unique and distinct sound was created. This new sound, new creation took the Joy Bells out of the box, and you may ask, what do you mean, out of the box??? Well here is the answer, when ask, what is your style of gospel music? The Joy Bells simply say we don’t have a style because we don’t need no music which doesn’t give us any limitations. We can take traditional, contemporary, urban contemporary, southern gospel, black gospel, worship songs, and a variety of all other gospel genres, add our God gifted voices, our soulful harmonies, our riffs, our hand claps and foot stomping and turn any song into something unique and special!!!!!! We can now reach the young, the old, the black audience, the white audience, and anybody who will give us a chance to minister in song. We can take our influences, The Clark Sisters, The Winans, Commissioned, The Hawkins Singers, Kirk Franklin, The William Brothers, and other Gospel influences and add our God given talents and acapella sound and turn our performances to a Holy Ghost party!!!!!!
What Are The Joy Bells Currently Up To, Who Have We Opened For, And What Are Your Future Goals?
The Joy Bells has a new acapella CD out titled “My Story”, it’s doing well and we are gaining a new fan base and starting to travel more to places like New York, Pittsylvania, D.C., and Georgia to name a few. We are constantly being asked to do concerts for churches, banquets, anniversary, and festivals our latest festival being the Folklife Festival at Ferrum College which drew about 20,000 or more. We have even been ask to come back next year, we are among the favorites in the gospel category! We are also currently working on a Live DVD recording where we can include our fans and be up-close and personal and we can give the viewers something visual, something to see rather than something just to hear. We have had the privilege to open up for great gospel and renowned artists such as The Canton Spirituals, Darrel McFadden, John P. Kee, Doc McKenzie and the Gospel Hi-Lites, and many others. One of the high points in our career was performing for the Great Dr. Bobby Jones, he had the longest running Gospel TV show in cable history, over 30 years. He liked us so much that he even asked us to come and sing on the show, it didn’t happen only because he soon retired and went to explore new things in life, but oh what an honor just to be considered. Our goal is to keep running this Christian race, be faithful, be committed, continue to grow and be able to recreate ourselves, don’t be a gospel group that can be boxed and be limited to a style of gospel music, and last but certainly not least, Make Heaven Our Home!!!!!
