Lieutenant Governor ———Greetings ———

Hello everyone, what an eventful month we’ve had! I’m not going to lie, January was a very stressful month for me, especially with DCON registration, the Lieutenant Governor Election, and most of all, FINALS! I hope you guys did well on your finals, and are refreshed, and ready to start another month of service and Key Club! District convention is fast approaching, and I am excited to say it’s going to be the best one yet! If you aren’t going this year, I really recommend you attend the following year’s DCON! I would like to thank you all for your patience with me as Lieutenant Governor. Being Lieutenant Governor is certainly not an easy responsibility, but it is definitely worth it being able to see the clubs grow, not only as clubs, but also as a division. Again, I would like to thank all the Key Clubbers and officers who’ve made my term easier through your cooperation and understanding. It’s so weird having an innie, but I am very confident that Tasmia Ahmed well lead our division to accomplish so many greater things than we have this past year. Much love, Division 65!

In Love and Service,

Christon Senekham 4

MEET YOUR 2014-15 LIEUTENANT GOV. TASMIA AHMED

Why did you join key club? During a lousy lunch period freshmen year, I was lucky to overhear a senior mention a key club meeting that would take place after school! I remember signing up for clubs such as PAWS, Hip-Hop, Model United Nations, etc. but I did not feel the same type of energy from either of those clubs like I did when I walked into my first Key Club meeting. Being able to witness so many students come together for community service with the guidance of student officers that knew EXACTLY what they were doing as leaders was an unforgettable moment for me. I fell in love quickly and I never really “had time to be a part of other clubs. Key Club was definitely the one for me. S/O to the 2012 key club officers that truly helped bring out the best in me! What was your favorite Key Club moment? The very first key club moment was right after I had given my speech for freshmen representative- I could not believe the amount of support and encouragement I received from my peers. Key Club has helped shaped my confidence since day one! There is no way I would be where I am today without the leaderships experience Key Club has given me. Also, how can I forget DCON 2012? As a freshman, it was an overwhelming experience but I believe I attended that convention for the sole purpose of coming back more motivated than ever. Every moment I recall from that convention further excites me for DCON 2014!

5

Why did you run for Lieutenant Governor? I ran for Lieutenant Governor not only to enhance my skills and contribute ideas but also to continue the legacy of exceptional leadership that has been demonstrated throughout our division! Division 65 is truly made up of hard working, exceptional students that know exactly why they love being a part of Key Club. Being your Lieutenant Governor gives me the opportunity to work close with our schools to communicate and relay important information that can benefit one another. Not only do I have the communication and interactive skills but I have YOU to help me continue our journey of making our division the best in our district! We have the motivation, intellect, and SPIRIT to change the world with our actions, one service project at a time. There is no reason as to why I wouldn’t accept the opportunity to serve as your LTG and give back all that you have given me.

Facts About Me: 

I love Indian and Thai food!

I am from Bangladesh

My best friend’s name is Tasnia (no joke!) I’ve always wanted to audition for America’s Got Talent

Any plans for our division? Of course! My goal is to keep our division close, motivate each and every one of you, and to keep the purpose of service close to our hearts. We can accomplish this and much more as long as we enjoy ourselves in the process. During my term, I would like to introduce a points system for each individual club to be able to see how they can improve and demonstrate what Key Club is all about. This points system will help each club recognize how they could excel in their leadership and participation skills. At the end of my term, I will award the club with the highest points a well deserved party (because everyone loves parties!). I believe hard work should be recognized because it motivates us to commit to our duties. I would also love for DCMs to be your clubs time to shine! Share with us your accomplishments and how you were able to get there. We want to hear it!

Division 65; you inspire me every day! Cheers to a new year! Much love

6

You say the word “MOTIVATION a lot. Who motivates you?

Michael Jackson; I admire Michael Jackson. Michael cared for the world to the extremes. Although the tabloids never captured his efforts, he was still the man who donated to the most charities and took the most action towards our helpless world. Michael Jackson was heavily misunderstood throughout his entire life; but that never stopped him. As the King of Pop, he will always hold the title for the most caring man in my heart and he inspires me every day to reach out to our community regardless of if we get credit for it or not. R.I.P

NT GOV. ELECTION

2014-15 LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

ELECTION RALLY RECAP On January 19th, 2014, over 100 Key Clubbers gathered from all over Division Sixty-Five to elect the incoming Lieutenant Governor for the 2014-2015 Key Club year. This was the biggest event Division 65 has seen, with 10/11 clubs represented at the Rally. There were two candidates, Tasmia Ahmed, Vice President of Westview High School Key Club, and Ik Hoon Jung, President of Southridge High School Key Club. Each candidate presented a speech to the Division, of no more than 5 minutes, and answered questions asked by members in the audience. During the intermission, Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor, Susie Than spoke about the position of Lieutenant Governor and about her experiences as an LTG. After a quick icebreaker and DCON video,

the ballots were finally counted. It was determined that the 2014-2015 Lieutenant Governor of Division 65 would be Tasmia Ahmed. As a welcoming gift to District Board, her fellow newly-elected Lieutenant Governors from Divisions 62, 64 and 66 sang her an altered version of "I Can Show You the World" from Aladdin. The Election Rally concluded with a final speech by Tasmia Ahmed. Afterwards, members stayed to snack on food, take selfies, and catch up with Key Clubbers from other schools. Before the event officially ended, members gathered on front stage to take a divisional photo. Tasmia's first task as incoming Lieutenant Governor will be coordinating the Spirit Gear packages for the 65th Annual District Convention on April 4th - April 6th.

Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) is a deadly disease that causes painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch for newly born babies birthed in unsanitary conditions. This disease is contracted when a pregnant women comes in contact with Tetanus spores from the ground or from unclean tools used during the birthing process. The slightest touch by an infants mother will cause inconsolable pain and in less than a week, the baby will die from Tetanus’ painful symptoms. In the course of a year, 60,000 babies will die from this easily preventable disease. So far, with the help of UNICEF and Kiwanis, 34 countries have been vaccinated from MNT, though it still remains a deadly threat in 25 countries. In order to ELIMINATE Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus for good, more than 100 million mothers and babies must be immunized, costing an estimated $110 million USD. Our goal is to rid the world of Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus by 2015. With the help of the entire K-family, we will be able to put an end to Tetanus related deaths.

As of Dec. 16th $43,992,179.80 USD

WESTVIEW EMPHASIS

weixiao (wei • shao): v. to smile

Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common birth anomalies in the world. Approximately 1 in every 700 babies is born with a cleft in North America… Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are still millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. The cleft’s causes are unknown. This congenital condition happens in the first three months of pregnancy when the sides of the lip and the roof of the mouth do not fuse together as they should.

Children with cleft lips face a multitude of challenges: -Feeding difficulty: unable to suck properly because roof of mouth is not formed completely. Food can easily come out of the nose. -Ear infections and hearing loss: opening of roof of the mouth and lip causes decreased muscle function, which can lead to delay in speech or abnormal speech. -Dental problems: teeth may not erupt normally and orthodontic treatment is usually required. -Cosmetic abnormality: the child may be treated as an outcast. No one should ever experience that. Fortunately, cleft lip and palate is treatable through a series of surgeries and therapies.

…But in countries such as India and Peru, the cleft occurs 1 in every 500 births.

“Wei Xiao” means “smile” in Chinese.

With just a movement of 13 muscles, you can make someone’s day. A smile is a welcoming gesture. It is kind, warm, and genuine. A smile uplifts our own mood and others as well. While the vast majority of those who live in the developed world are treated and lead normal lives, millions of children and adults in developing countries suffer from unrepaired clefts. Many are aban-

doned shortly after birth or kept hidden away from society. Most find it difficult to attend school, communicate easily, find jobs or get married.

NEW YEAR UPDATE: $1280.26 has been raised so far, surpassing the initial $1,000 goal. Great work, Westview Key Club!

ROSE GARDEN, PORTLAND, OR 9:00AM, SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2014

Why we walk When you walk in March for Babies, you give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. The money you raise supports programs in your community that help moms have healthy, full-term pregnancies. And it funds research to find answers to the problems that threaten our babies. We’ve been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible $2 billion to benefit all babies.

What to expect This year, more than 7 million people will join their family, friends and colleagues in 900 communities across the nation. Our volunteers and staff will encourage and support you in your efforts to raise awareness and funds. No matter if this is your first year or your 25th, you can expect the event to be fun, compelling and rewarding.
