Lieutenant Governor ———Greetings ———
Hello everyone! I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday season. I can‘t believe another month has passed, and in a little less than two weeks, we will be electing the next incoming Lieutenant Governor to lead our Division in the 20142015 Key Club Year. Though my term is quickly coming to an end, that does not mean we should start slacking off. Reflecting on the past year, our division has accomplished so much; from increasing membership in our clubs, to performing more so many hours of community service. We have truly done a great job in 2013. We should continue this into the 2014 year, and even strive to accomplish more! On another note, I hope I am fulfilling my job to you as a Lieutenant Governor. Whether you are a regular club member, or an officer, I care for the wellbeing of the clubs within our division and also your wellbeing as a Key Club member. If there is anything, and I mean anything, you can always reach me through the phone or through email. I am always here to listen.
Let‘s make this a great start of the year!
In Love and Service,

DECEMBER DCM
The December Divisional Council Meeting was filled with fun, and games, a whole lot of laughs. For December, the meeting was a lot more casual, taking place at Lieutenant Governor, Christon Senekham‘s house. There was a White ―Turtle‖ party, as many of the attendees called it. There were many gifts exchanged, the most noteworthy would probably have been the crab that Tasmia Ahmed (Westview VP) re-
ceived, or the two live gold fish, which was highly sought after by many. Also, at the Divisional, besides the White Turtle Gift Exchange and the potluck, there was the sorting party for Divisional T-shirts. If you weren‘t able to come out to the DCM and pick up your club‘s T shirts, please contact me so I can get the gear to your club!
All in all, the December DCM was a great time for Key Clubbers, old and new to come out and have a fun time together! Special thanks to the newly joined Key Clubbers from Hillsboro High School to attend!

―Century High School's Key Club donates hats, gloves to economically disadvantaged Reedville Elementary‖ hear about Reedville,‖ said senior Jenny Ho, the president of the Key Club. Robin Farup-Romero, the principal at Reedville, was thankful for the donations. ―We are in an area that is more challenged,‖ she said.

During the last week of school before winter break, students from Century High School both embodied the holidays‘ spirit of giving and highlighted the extreme demographic differences in Hillsboro‘s neighborhoods. The Key Club, a volunteer service group of 121 students, donated 104 boxes of gloves, hats and socks to students at nearby Reedville Elementary School, where over 95 percent of students are economically disadvantaged, according to state data. Century is at 43 percent, while Ladd Acres Elementary School, which is also close, is at 44 percent. ―We always do stuff with Imlay, Tobias [and] Ladd Acres [elementary schools]…but we never
The Key Club has been very active this year. They raised over $1,700 for UNICEF on Halloween by trick-or-treating – not for candy, but for donations – and they marched in the Macy‘s Holiday Parade on Black Friday. Their adviser, Brett Trosclair, said they also organized a Thanksgiving dinner basket for a local family and are volunteering as door ringers with the Salvation Army. Trosclair called ―amazing.‖

president
―Under her direction with the other officers over the past two years, Key Club has really grown at our school,‖ Trosclair said. Ho said anyone at Century can join Key Club – unlike the National Honor Society, they don‘t require a minimum number of volunteer hours. ―We try to balance fun with service,‖ Ho said. -- Luke Hammill

Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) is a deadly disease that causes painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch for newly born babies birthed in unsanitary conditions. This disease is contracted when a pregnant women comes in contact with Tetanus spores from the ground or from unclean tools used during the birthing process. The slightest touch by an infants mother will cause inconsolable pain and in less than a week, the baby will die from Tetanus‘ painful symptoms. In the course of a year, 60,000 babies will die from this easily preventable disease. So far, with the help of UNICEF and Kiwanis, 34 countries have been vaccinated from MNT, though it still remains a deadly threat in 25 countries. In order to ELIMINATE Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus for good, more than 100 million mothers and babies must be immunized, costing an estimated $110 million USD. Our goal is to rid the world of Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus by 2015. With the help of the entire K-family, we will be able to put an end to Tetanus related deaths.
As of Dec. 16th $43,992,179.80 USD

WESTVIEW EMPHASIS
weixiao (wei • shao): v. to smile
Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common birth anomalies in the world. Approximately 1 in every 700 babies is born with a cleft in North America… Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are still millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. The cleft‘s causes are unknown. This congenital condition happens in the first three months of pregnancy when the sides of the lip and the roof of the mouth do not fuse together as they should.
Children with cleft lips face a multitude of challenges: -Feeding difficulty: unable to suck properly because roof of mouth is not formed completely. Food can easily come out of the nose. -Ear infections and hearing loss: opening of roof of the mouth and lip causes decreased muscle function, which can lead to delay in speech or abnormal speech. -Dental problems: teeth may not erupt normally and orthodontic treatment is usually required. -Cosmetic abnormality: the child may be treated as an outcast. No one should ever experience that. Fortunately, cleft lip and palate is treatable through a series of surgeries and therapies.
…But in countries such as India and Peru, the cleft occurs 1 in every 500 births.
―Wei Xiao‖ means ―smile‖ in Chinese.
With just a movement of 13 muscles, you can make someone‘s day. A smile is a welcoming gesture. It is kind, warm, and genuine. A smile uplifts our own mood and others as well. While the vast majority of those who live in the developed world are treated and lead normal lives, millions of children and adults in developing countries suffer from unrepaired clefts. Many are aban-
doned shortly after birth or kept hidden away from society. Most find it difficult to attend school, communicate easily, find jobs or get married.
NEW YEAR UPDATE: $1280.26 has been raised so far, surpassing the initial $1,000 goal. Great work, Westview Key Club!

INTERESTED IN RUNNING FOR
LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR? Why should you run?
What is the commitment to the position?
Serving as Lieutenant Governor is a great opportunity to serve your Division at a much higher level than the club level. You have the opportunity to lead others while learning to become a better leader yourself. Through service and dedication, your work as Lieutenant Governor will hopefully inspire others to get involved. You will be able to meet people from all over the Pacific Northwest District and serve with others as committed to their divisions as yourself. Being Lieutenant Governor is such a gaining experience, and one of the most memorable of high school experiences.
Just like any other position, it is your goal to serve your division to the best of your ability. Every Lieutenant Governor in the past has brought something different to the table. One thing always stays the same: Time commitment. As a Lieutenant Governor, you must be able to commit a lot of time to efficiently and successfully run your division. Time will be spent creating newsletters, planning events, holding monthly DCMs and PCMs, attending Key Club and Kiwanis meetings as well as meeting with your respective committees on District Board. Though it is a big commitment to make, it will pay off in the end knowing you‘ve served your Division the best you could.
What does a Lieutenant Governor do? As a Lieutenant Governor, you hold the Key between the clubs in your Division and the Pacific Northwest District. It is your job to maintain constant communication with your club officers as well as the three sponsoring Kiwanis Clubs in our Division. You will be doing club visits, at least twice a year, holding divisional events, planning Portland Rally, DCMs, PCMs, submitting Monthly Report Forms, and creating a monthly newsletter to send out to your division and district. Besides that, you will be serving on two committees on the PNW District Board.
IF YOU ARE RUNNING, Please contact Lt.G Christon for the Candidate Packet!
