Bundled Bamboo Structures Multiple large span spaces such as art galleries, cafeteria etc. are constructed with Bundled bamboo structures in the complex. The large length of the locally grown DENDROCALAMUS BRANDISII is utilized. The technique is a standard practice of framed structures made of beams and columns formed of bundled bamboo poles and trussed roofing. Virendeel beams are made to increase strength. The structure is light, airy and well ventilated.

Urban Practica: Bangalore SHIVAJI NAGAR MARKETs ADAPTING & PERSISTING Shivaji Nagar is a bustling market in the heart of Banaglore city. It accounts for the dense coexistence of a variety of products and materials, quite distinct from each other being traded in tightly knit up urban space. This project studies the transformation of the distinctly varied markets in Shivaji Nagar across a historic time-line. In a multi-disciplinary team, research wass primarily conducted through collection of multiple oral histories, backed up with literature reviews and study of maps over the years. A historical time-line is drawn for 5 major markets in this area: Russel market selling fruits, vegetable and meat; Stephen’s square dealing in auto spare parts; New Evening Bazaar and Quadrant road for clothes retail; OPH road which is primarily a steel and plastic utensils hub and Char Minar road which is a mix of dry-fish, leather goods and cane baskets. The evolution of space and trade networks is studied in the larger backdrop of the evolution of Bangalore city.

Oct., 2017 Guided by: IIHS faculty Group mates: Ananya Ramesh Anish Mannam Malavika Narayan

Various agents of change are identified in the markets, from technological evolution, change in economic and social scenarios to state driven regulatory changes. The constant existence of these markets highlights an inherent economic resilience. The paper takes a look into what persistence enabling factors and adaptation strategies help these vibrant commercial centers thrive. 24

Seminar: DELHI INSITES The role of interim design in governing quality of urban Construction Site environments; Delhi Abstract– Across Delhi, construction activity today is extensive and the image has become synonymous with the urban realm. There are the ever growing suburbs and the burdened core– all building more to serve more. Urbandwellers thus interact directly or indirectly with construction sites on a daily basis. The plenitude and the protracted periods of construction inspire the discussion in this research – viewing construction sites in themselves as being designed, or rather the argument formed here – construction sites as needing conscious design. This seminar explores the potential of a site during construction in affecting the conditions inside and outside its boundaries. In the process it questions the common practice of considering a construction site (especially large scale project) as transient given its deep and prolonged effects on the surroundings, the environment and the people in contact. Various practices around the world that result in better site conditions are looked at with the perspective of factors that make them work and considered in the context of Delhi. There is an attempt to understand where site environment falls in the priorities of the many stakeholders, and what kind of incentives and efforts work in the favor of maintaining better sites.

UD Research Paper

Professional Practice Paper Nov., 2016

High-Density, High-Rise Residential Development and its Psycho-social effects Abstract– High-density high-rise urban housing environments are analyzed in terms of the social and psychological effects they have on the residents who live there. What aspects of the spaces lead to distress, why and how they can be avoided is researched through secondary studies, experiments and research papers. While they may have many severe ill-effects, ways of making high density residential buildings more people friendly are suggested.

April, 2017 In what ways can architects professionally contribute towards social causes and viably practice humanitarian architecture? Abstract– The built environment is an important aspect of urban and rural life, affecting lives of people in many ways. These could range from health, security, access and inequality, safety and much more. As designers of this built, the profession of architecture has considerable potential and responsibility in contributing towards building equitable and socially sensible spaces. As students aspiring to venture into this line of work, we are insufficiently aware of the available opportunities, scope and prospects that lay ahead. The scopes of tangible and viable modes of architectural practice, that also help the society in a positive way seem few. This research attempts to understand the workings of inspiring people and organizations that pursue social-aware and humanitarian architecture. Amongst those studied include-Development Alternatives, Delhi; Hunnarshala, Bhuj; People in Centre, Ahmedabad; Seeds, Delhi. Consequently, we try to assess the possibilities for architectural firms and young graduates in this field of work.

Architectural Dissertation

Urban Study: Shahjahanabad

Nov., 2015 Travel Writing and its Influences on and from Architecture (in Context of Shahjahanabad) Abstract– This dissertation is an exercise in gathering accounts of various travellers over the centuries who have visited Shahjahanabad, perceived its urban spaces and written about them. The text recognizes the wider significance of travelogues in social studies. Interpretations of travelogues till now, specifically in the Indian context are looked at. An attempt is then made to analyze the gathered accounts about Shahjahanabad, to understand its past and present. Through this process, we achieve an understanding of the spatial evolution of Delhi’s Walled City through the centuries. What is also discovered, is the evolution of how this place has been perceived by visitors and outsiders, as well as locals, and how this perception has altered along with the space. We see how travel writing has played an important role in history, is building character of places. Further, the increasing importance of good, observational writing is noticed, in today’s age of information and imagery overload. Travel writing not just documents the observations of a person at a place, but can help us in better understanding the city at a personal level.

2014-15 Dariba Kalan, Kinari Bazaar and Gali Anar

Multiple Studio Works

Gali Anar is a tiny lane emerging from the heart of Kinari Bazaar and leading south toward Kucha Seth- the Jain area. This lane consists of some old Jain havelis a part of the Naughara 18th century Jain mansions. Dariba Kalan -The street of the incomparable pearl, is Asia’s largest jewellery market. This area is a surviving witness to the 1739 massacres by Nadir Shah when the gold shops were looted. Kinari bazaar (Chota Dariba) is a wholesale retail market starting at Dariba Kalan, adjacent to the Gali Paranthe Wali. Especially busy during the wedding season.

Khari Baoli Documentation, spatial analysis and socio-economic study of area: A wholesale footwear market as well as the neighbourhood of Mirza Ghalib’s Haveli and the still resident descendants of Hakim Ajmal Khan. Built in 1650, the Fatehpuri Masjid survives here. Still carrying an aura around it, this mosque hosts a huge congregation during Eid celebrations. To the west of this mosque, lies the Gadodia Market, a huge spice warehouse built in the 1920s. This is a part of the Khari Baoli spice market which is Asia’s biggest wholesale spice bazaar. This area used to be a travellers guest house, back in the 1600s when the city was planned. Now it is overwhelmingly built upon by the locals to make warehouses and residences. The team came up with an urban intervention proposal wherein the manifold potential of the terraces of Old Delhi is realized and a new strata of open-public space is made more accessible and inviting to people.

Rural Study: Tilwara, Barmer

Jan-May, 2014 PROPOSAL

Design with G. Lakshmi Chaitanya Suprima Joshi

With a population of less than 1400, Tilwara is a village in the Barmer district of central Rajasthan. It lies on the banks of river Luni, which has now almost dried up and is severely polluted. Out in an arid corner of the country, Tilwara is known best for the annual Cattle Fair it hosts every spring on the dried up river bed. The studio entailed a thorough documentation and socioeconomic analysis of the village and its spaces.

The evolution of houses and homesteads and evolution in building technology and spatial planning of the dwellings of the locals was also studied. The village showed a range of practices, adopting and adapting newer urban techniques to their traditional ones.

30

Designed on the edge of studied village, the complex fingers down onto the river bed where the annual cattle fair is hosted. A cattle healthcare center, agriculture and dairy research center, a sarai (guest-house) for visitors and a public hall for locals has been designed. Local techniques have been adapted with alternate technologies to give the village a face that the locals are proud of.

Chennai Sooper Beings: Picture Book

Nov., 2017

Following an immersion visit to Chennai, as part of the Urban Fellows Programme at IIHS, we were required to document our learnings in any medium. Inspired by work done by Tara books, I created this picture book. It is an homage to the range of inspiring urban practitioners we got to interact with. Activists, researchers, scientists and more, they are portrayed as ‘Sooper Beings’ dealing with the beast that is development on a daily basis, and keeping the city afloat.
