The budget managed to garner positive sentiment with announcements, such as tax rebate to all income earners with less than Rs 5 Lakh annual income and income support scheme for 12 crore farmers. Apart from this, budget’s focus on digital technology and AI with announcements, such as digitizing 1 lakh digital villages in the next 5 years, national centre for AI and national AI portal, got a thumbs-up from the industry. The government’s impetus on making India a manufacturing powerhouse was reiterated with the continual focus on Make in India and the proposal to remove custom duty from 36 capital goods. Also, allocation for smart cities was enhanced by 7% and CAPEX for railways was increased to Rs 1.48 trillion. The government’s focus on infrastructure development, including roads and railways, as well as smart cities development is slated to open doors of opportunities for the engineering and allied industry. India’s growth story can only be further enhanced by aligning objectives and policies that function together to place the country as a manufacturing base. It is also crucial to encourage the use of high-end manufacturing processes and technologies in digital factories that can encourage Additive Manufacturing and other forward-looking initiatives for the sector. Reducing import duties on strategic capital equipment like Additive Manufacturing machinery will also encourage the industry and the country to stay competitive in a global market.

focus on ‘Make in India’. A budget of around Rs. 6 lakh crores was allocated for infrastructure development in this financial year. So, based on these enabling factors and with huge potential yet to be tapped, the per capita consumption can easily be increased from the current levels. I am happy to share that we have been able to bring a shift in mind set and the work

culture in these areas, as demonstrated by actual performance.” Mr Binoy Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Steel emphasized, “The National Steel Policy 2017 along with the Policy for Preference to Domestically Manufactured Iron & Steel Products (DMI&SP), is not just aimed at providing a boost to the steel industry in the country but also acts as a facilitator to the

‘Make In India’ initiative of the Government of India. These policies have resulted in savings of more than INR 8000 Cr till date”. Underlining the importance of not showing any disadvantage to the sector, he added that they are also reviewing the DMI&SP policy and trying to find convergence between DMI&SP policy and Public Procurement Order 2017 of DIPP; “Under the ambit of the policy, 16 more steel products were brought under Quality Control Order, which now covers a total of 53 products. The endeavor is to bring more products under the Quality Control Order in an effort towards prohibiting production, import and distribution of substandard products.”

vibratory compactor was developed by a mechanical engineer Hilding Svenson. In 1940 the company name changed to AB Vibro-Verken. In 1947 it launched the first vibratory plate compactor, which weighed 1.5 tons, being nicknamed the ‘frog’. It opened its research laboratory in 1948 and manufactured the first vibratory road roller in 1953. The site in Karlskrona opened in 1960, which made heavy rollers and had the company’s technical centre. The CA 25 road roller introduced in 1970 became the world’s leading compaction roller. It changed its name to Dynapac Maskin AB in 1973; at this moment the company rapidly expanded its product range. Dynapac is a leading supplier of high-tech soil and asphalt rollers, light equipment and pavers, committed to strengthen customer performance by being a partner on the road ahead. It is represented worldwide via its own regional sales and service offices, and cooperates with an extensive and professional distribution network. Now headquartered in Wardenburg, Germany, Dynapac has production facilities in Europe, South America and Asia. It has been in India since the past 10 years. Under the Fayat umbrella, Dynapac has continued to operate as an autonomous manufacturer providing its customers with state-of-the art technology.

Q. Could you elaborate about the new plant in Pune? With its one decade of experience in manufacturing in India, Dynapac has moved to a new integrated facility in Pune with increased production capacity that will strengthen the group’s presence in India. This move by Dynapac offers its wide customer base the strength of new technology that will make it more competitive in the growing road market in India. The plant located at ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

Pulgaon has a production capacity in the range of 1,200-1,500 units. With the new plant Dynapac aims to boost sales in the market. In 2018, the brand manufactured 750 units in India. The new Pune facility spans over 5.5 acres of land with strength of about 100 employees. In India Dynapac offers product design and development with a competence centre along with both local sourcing and support of global sourcing teams. It has also established a distribution centre with sales and service support. Both soil compactors and asphalt rollers will be produced at the Pune factory. The soil compactors are between 10-12 tons and will serve both the Indian market as well as those of neighbouring countries. The double drum asphalt rollers will be built in two segments: one small tandem roller of 1.6 tons and one segment including rollers between 7 – 9 tons. Like the soil compactors, these are both for the local market as well as for other markets.

Q. Are your products customised for India? Our technical centre works on customising products for Indian soil and roads. At the same time, our

soil compactors and asphalt rollers are also made keeping in place international standards of quality so that they can be exported to other countries. In fact, that is why India has become a major hub for us and we serve the needs of Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East markets.

Q. How important is innovation in this sector? Our engineering expertise makes us a leading brand. And at the heart of good engineering is continuous innovation. Our engineers constantly work at improving the design and performance of our products. For example, special attention is paid to the driver’s comfort because unless and until the operator is comfortable with working for long hours on soil compactors and rollers, his performance will not be up to the mark. Similarly, a lot of innovation and engineering expertise is called for to make our equipment at par with the internationally accepted emission norms. In India, we pay a lot of attention to customising our products to suit the nature of the road projects here. For example, equipment required for the urban road projects such as highways has to be different from that required for www.engmag.in

use on village soil.

Q. Could you give an example of how innovation is important? Taking into account the ground realities, Dynapac now offers a paver solution for small jobsites, narrow paving areas or landscaping asphalt and sand jobs. The F80W – equipped with its gas heated vibrating screed V1300V – is the perfect fit for jobsites with a working width range between 0.25 and 1.65 metres. The simple and robust design is easy to operate, so the F80W is the ideal partner for smooth and well-compacted surface jobs, which cannot be achieved manually. Due to its weight of only 1.2 tons and its

We are definitely geared for expanding our capacity should the need arise. As of now, 27 km of road work is accomplished each day in India and the government has an ambitious plan to connect the entire country with highways and expressways which will of course benefit companies like us. We are presently supplying our compaction and paving equipment to clients that are engaged on long-term projects. Therefore, we are confident that the demand shall continue to increase. Our new factory has modern stateof-the-art machinery and we will be able to roll out the best products for years to come.

Q. Doesn’t this segment have too much competition? The road equipment industry in India comprises both the organised and the unorganised players. Among the former, there are two to three major multinational companies that are doing good business here. We too have created our own niche. Ultimately, it is quality that counts and Dynapac stands true to its word when it comes to engineering excellence. Most of the big players command a market share of about 12-15%.

Q. What was the reason for choosing Pune to set up the plant? For one thing, we have an operational base in Nashik and therefore it made sense to set up a plant in Pune which is known as a manufacturing hub. We also have a sales and service centre in Pune. In addition, the city has engineering talent which is essential for the kind of products we manufacture. ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

Q. Have you explored any newer applications? Yes we are exploring. In fact we are trying for a tie-up for new technology in the area of Bulk Solids Handling. We are in the niche market. Customers come to us by word of mouth. We have proven time and again that we are trust worthy and flexible. MNCs in particular take decisions based on trust. So we just cannot afford to go wrong. The project has to yield the capacity it is designed for. There should be no breakdown during warranty. We have to ensure faster ROI (return on investment) and lowest cost of ownership.

Q. What’s your vision for KE-Material Handling? In our business model, we cannot scale up fast. We take up smaller projects and complete one after the other to ensure Customer Satisfaction. We thrive in and enjoy doing non-standard jobs which others do not undertake because of the risk involved. We have accomplished some challenging projects for Aerospace and Defence. If you see our milestones, in 1992 we supplied a Roll Test Rig for evaluating fatigue limits of fighter aircraft wheel assemblies for HAL-Lucknow as part of the LCA program. In 1995, we made a test rig for engine Environment testing for the MBT developed by the Combat Vehicle Research & Development Organization at Avadi. In 2001, we supplied a Dynamometer for testing friction & wear properties of Brake Pad Material

A typical Tea Cleaning and

Blending System at Van Reese, Sri Lanka for DRDL, Hyderabad. In 2002 we executed a repeat order for Roll Test Rig for the development of SU30 Wheels again for HAL after a gap of 10 years. This has come because of the trust the client has in our capability and commitment. The Brake Disc Dynamometer we have developed is the one we are most proud of. After 14 years of rigorous use, DRDL is in discussion to upgrade the controls to Digital. We expect to have the opportunity to do such challenging projects in the future.

Why Indian Technology Market Remains an Enigma for Global Hightech! Ground realities

Mr. A.P. Jayanthram, Ex MD, Heidenhain India

Some interesting revelations • India is considered as a huge IT hub. But Microsoft makes only 1.5% of their revenue from India! It is no different for global majors like Caterpillar, Toyota,Daimler ... you add the big names. • In the 73 billion Euro global Machine Tool market, India is the 10 th biggest consumer, with just 2.3% of the consumption pie . China consumes 30% and Germany 8.5%. Since 40% of consumption is local machines, for imports, the share is only 1.4%. • Why is it so? » • It appears that most global companies try to implement a scaled down version of their global/European strategy for India, without worrying about the local compulsions. » • India is not what it often appears to be. It is a flat pyramid with 700 million people living on 2$ per day. The top is unbelievably thin and that explains the minuscule high end market. ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

Indian customers who operate in an atmosphere of shortages and compromises, almost always expect 70% value at 50% cost. This is particularly true for Machinery and measuring/ testing equipment. So, what is the way out? You need an India specific strategy and this does not mean slashing prices. When John Deere came to India, they had tractors too heavy for India’s fragmented land ownerships. They developed 35 HP tractors exclusively for India. Hyundai and Suzuki are successful in India, because they made India a global hub for small cars. A lot of successful European companies take India as a necessary compulsory addition in their coverage map, without a mindset to invest in this future market. They are used to an affluent client base that buy on impulse, reputation and comfort level. Many are reluctant about the very idea of customising markets. When an Indian customer imports a Machine, he is looking at a Swiss Army knife which can do everything under the sun. Matching his needs with the options and budgets is a highly technical, professional job that needs dedicated sales talent. Offering him a lot of expensive unwanted features by a feature sales specialist is of no use. India can be a fantastic laboratory for testing new business models provided there is enough analysis and dialogue. Smart global companies start here by selling global products at global prices to the top 1%. That is easy. But the eventual success depends on

whether they can crack the middle market, because every global competitor with a philosophy of token competition is targeting the same 1%! Most MNCs are happy here as they put a low bar. Most fully owned subsidiaries contribute just 1% of global revenues.

Questions one should ponder over Can a Mercedes really crack the Indian commercial vehicle market, 95% of which is shared by Tata, Ashok Leyland and now Volvo? A fascinating Marketing project, it would make. Though buying up the market by slashing prices is never a winner, there has to be some flexibility with the Indian MDs of MNCs who must not be going out of the country for a 3% discount. ‘Skimming the top’ model has huge limitations when it comes to marketing technology in a poor but potentially big country. Finding money for capital investment is a huge challenge for entrepreneurs in a high interest economy. Is the MNC willing to create his own global financing networks here? Can they practise real value selling by specially trained manpower that can effectively convince a buyer on what value he gets by spending a bit more initially and how it adds to his eventual profits? Can they invest in excellent hand holding support system in advance? Can they offer things like a 36 month warrantee as a standard confident statement of reliability? India is a sleeping giant and only those who are patient and willing to customise market inputs with deep study and interactive conversations can succeed here. www.engmag.in

76 BUDGET IMPACT

Budget 2019: Impact on Manufacturing Industry

T

he Interim Budget 2019, NDA government’s last budget before the general elections, was wellreceived by the industry. Announced on February 1 by Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, the industry unanimously agreed that the budget is growth-oriented with the vision of making India a USD 5 trillion economy in next 5 years and USD 10 trillion in the subsequent 8 years. The budget is being seen by the industry as forward-looking with announcements targeted to boost the rural economy and the SME sector. These proposals are poised to increase the level of consumption, which in turn will augur well for the domestic

manufacturing sector. The government’s impetus on making India a manufacturing powerhouse was reiterated with the continual focus on Make in India and the proposal to remove custom duty from

36 capital goods. Also, allocation for smart cities was enhanced by 7% and CAPEX for railways was increased to Rs 1.48 trillion. The government’s focus on infrastructure development, including roads and railways, as well as smart cities development is slated to open doors of opportunities for the engineering and allied industry. On the flip side, the industry feels that there was nothing substantial in the budget, in terms of grants, incentives, or subsidies, for the renewable energy sector apart from fleeting references to initiatives undertaken by the NDA government through the year. Here’s how manufacturing industry is reacting to Interim Budget 2019:

Ranganath N.K, Managing Director, Grundfos India “This year’s union budget is good for the common man despite it being an interim budget. The government has not only revitalized its vision for the infrastructure sector but has also strengthened its commitment to promote renewable energy. The budget reinforces the direction to make India a global leader in the solar power by actively leading the agenda to reduce climate change by setting up the International Solar Alliance treaty. We are happy to note the solar power generation in the last five years has increased by 10 times. This will encourage further adoption of solar installations and will also create lakhs of job opportunities in the sector. We hope that this will also lead to the implementation of solar pumps in the agricultural sector, thereby strengthening the country’s water and energy security further.”

BUDGET IMPACT 77

Kartik Gandhi, Director, Gandhi Automations Pvt Ltd The infrastructure for warehousing and logistics is very poor. However, with the advent of GST and implementation of GST regime; things are looking very upbeat. Companies have started investing hugely in warehouse space & logistics. This has very promising views on upcoming technology and advancements in this sector. Soaring investments flowing through hospitality, retail, commercial and healthcare sectors construction activities in India are opening up opportunities for smart entrance doors. Growing awareness about energy efficiency and environmental impact on using automatic doors have resulted in wide acceptance in residential sectors as well as educational institutions. Technology upgradation in the automatic doors market ensures cost savings in the long run despite the higher initial cost as compared to conventional doors The emerging trends which are becoming very popular are remote operated high-speed doors and rolling shutters, the challenges here are sustainability and access. The opportunities to the Indian Industry with automation is to maintain an efficient production cycle, safe inventory, Cutting-edge technology, speed of movement, functionality and safety- are the must-haves for this line of Gandhi automations products. If we add the high quality of personalization and design, they become unique elements necessary for daily logistics operations and for the visibility of customer identity. Procurement professionals around the world are standing on the threshold of new age. Until now, the essential criteria for future-proofing procurement and supply management has never been so purposefully compiled. The old paradigm of cost reduction and cost efficiency is drawing to a close. New and revolutionary concepts are spinning from the frenzied technological leaps of our time; especially in digital transformation. In this dynamic, complex and disruptive era, procurement leaders and experts around the world are searching for a secure and successful future. Future-proofing can deliver this security – provided the methodological and instrumental requirements this study discusses and proposes - are in place. While everyone is talking about future-proofing, only few have the operational expertise to futureproof their organization. The Indian economy propelled by the Make in India initiative, demand for machinery & equipment is likely to receive significant boost in the decade ahead. A report by Dun & Bradstreet states that for the period FY16-FY20, it is estimated that cross Value Addition of machinery & equipment to grow at an average annual rate of 14.7% during FY16- FY20 and further accelerate to 17.2% during FY21-FY25 There is a clear need to add manufacturing capacities in the manufacturing automation and logistic warehousing sector. The industry is moving towards increasingly sophisticated entrance automation solutions like high speed doors, automated rolling shutters, loading bay solutions, hangar and garage doors, sectional overhead doors etc. driven by demand from key user segments such as automobiles, consumer durables, aerospace, pharmaceutical, food, construction, industrialization etc. To derive long term benefits, entrance automation manufacturers should develop capabilities to cater to this demand and promote greater investments in this sector. 78 BUDGET IMPACT

Aaditya Dhoot, Managing Director, IMP Powers Ltd Despite being an Interim Budget, it had a lot of human touch wherein the SOPs given to middle class and lower middle class people would further increase the buying power in turn boosting the Indian economy. The agrarian distress was addressed, Infra-spending was given a boost with the T&D sector budget allocation reduced. All in All 7/10 for the budget.

P.L. Muthusekkar, Managing Director, NORD Drivesystems Confused on whether this is an interim, vote-on-account or appropriate budget, clarity is missing. Sourcing of funds for SOPs is the million dollar question. Increase of gratuity will help potential employees in the long run. A pension scheme was also announced but the Rs. 500 crore provision seems meagre. India has the largest number of youth population considering the ageing factor and the new pension schemes needs finer data. High growth was equalled to job opportunities, but I disagree. Growth is engendered by operational efficiencies, automation and improvement of resources. It does not mean ‘adding jobs’- such statements lack back up data. The boost to agriculture was definitely needed, be it 1.5 times minimum support price or Rs 6,000 per annum pay out offered directly to needy farmers’ account. I have seen such direct subsidy work in case of LPG in rural areas. This will be a marked shift and a welcome one. There was mention of capital goods and support on custom duty. But machineries and equipment getting SOPs was not elaborated. It is also unclear what is meant by “global manufacturing”. Infrastructural development is a given that any government will have to keep committing to for decades. There was talk of developing transport using inland waterways, but what merely a route from Kolkata to Varanasi was declared. That’s too little – two thirds of India is covered by water. Our country is the most happening place- we have five new airports coming up for expansion, while elsewhere in the globe, capacities lie saturated. Last four years saw good announcements, not implementation. We’ve had start-up India, stand-up India- now it is time for gallop- India.

Mr. V.G.Sakthikumar, Managing Director, Schwing Stetter India Private Limited, Convenor for Membership committee, ICEMA, Chairman of Mechanisation committee, Builders Association of India. Eventhough, the budget 2019 is not a regular and only an interim in nature. We appreciate the Government of India taking proactive measures to help housing and real estate segment in particular. Besides this, the stress on housing for all, recognizing the need of the people who migrate from the native place to the place of work. The Government has permitted interest in exemption of IT for two houses. Similarly increasing or exempting tax for employed, the income of upto 9 lakhs will help the real estate segment. We hope this additional benefits gives further fillip thereby giving a boost to readymix concrete industry in India. Other than the real estate industry, most of the other infrastructure projects like roads, railways, ports, power, etc are already doing good due to ongoing projects. We would say 2019 budget is addressing and hope this additional benefits are addressing more to the real estate which was going through a tough time after post GST and RERA introduction.

HEIDENHAIN Encoders for industrial robots Significant accuracy improvement at the tool center point Speed, power and durability are key characteristics of industrial robots. These robots are typically used in applications such as welding or in lifting heavy components for vehicle assembly. Yet despite advanced calibration methods, the position accuracy of industrial robots has been inadequate for certain tasks. This is now changing thanks in part to highly accurate, output-side encoders from HEIDENHAIN and AMO.

T

he main driver behind this development has been the aerospace industry because it must perform highly accurate machining operations on very large components. Machine tools would achieve the required level of accuracy with ease but are either too inflexible or too expensive as special-purpose machines for the job sites and working spaces involved. A robot, however, can easily reach any position on a very large component, such as the fuselage of an aircraft, and can perform tasks on it such as drilling and milling. Accuracy is impaired by many factors For these kinds of applications, however, the tool center point (i.e., the tool at the end of the robot’s arm) must be positioned and guided with sufficient accuracy. This is where the classic industrial robot runs up against its limits.

Deviations result from a variety of factors: • In order to achieve the desired level of maneuverability, robots with serial kinematics are required, such as articulated robots with six axes. • Each one of these axes is driven by a servo motor with a gear train. Zero position error, backlash, and joint elasticities are the main sources of inaccuracy. • Applied forces and dynamic effects during the machining process affect the rigidity of the robot’s mechanics and negatively influence the absolute position accuracy. ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

Figure 1: Classic HEIDENHAIN rotary encoder for motor feedback Thanks to advanced calibration methods, it is already possible to move a tool center point to a certain position repeatedly to within several hundredths of a millimeter. Depending on the manufacturer, the repeatability of articulated robots as per ISO 9283 is ±0.1 mm or better. However, when compared with repeatability, the absolute position accuracy that can be achieved within the robot’s coordinate system is worse by a factor of ten. Depending on their design, maximum range, and maximum load capacity, articulated robots currently achieve an absolute position accuracy of ±1 mm. This is insufficient for meeting the accuracy requirements of industries such as the aerospace sector. Yet robot manufacturers have been responding to this problem.

Step 1: Highly dynamic motor control Classic rotary encoders continue to provide the servo motor feedback at the robot’s axes. Because servo motors require high control dynamics,

the robust inductive rotary encoders from HEIDENHAIN, such as those of the ECI 1100 and 1300 series, or multiturn models of the EQI 110 and 1300 series, are ideal for this type of application. These encoders deliver high control quality and system accuracy, and they are resistant to strong vibrations. Since these encoders feature a purely serial EnDat interface, even applications exposed to strong electromagnetic interference do not impair data transfer quality or safety. These inductive rotary encoders support safety integrity level SIL 2, category 3 PL d. They can even attain SIL 3, or category 4 PL e, if additional measures are taken on the control. These encoders also provided the added safety advantage of mechanical fault exclusion against the loosening of the shaft and stator connection. With this safety package, these inductive rotary encoders can also be used in systems designed for human-robot collaboration.

Step 2: Secondary encoders for highly accurate position www.engmag.in

TECH TRENDS 81 Table 1: Comparison of the most important specifications for typical secondary encoders

Figure 2: Improvement of the absolute position accuracy through the use of so-called secondary encoders on every axis

measurement

Robotics manufacturers can significantly improve the absolute position accuracy of their robots by using additional, high-accuracy angle encoders or rotary encoders at every robot axis. These so-called secondary encoders, which are mounted after each gear train, capture the actual position of every robot joint. This allows the encoders to account for zero position error and backlash. The retroactive forces on each axis resulting from the machining task are measured as well. All of this results in a 70 to 80 percent improvement of the absolute position accuracy at the tool center point. Modular angle encoders, such as the HEIDENHAIN ECA 4000 with optical scanning, the HEIDENHAIN ECI 4000 rotary encoder with inductive scanning, and the AMO WMR angle encoder, are well-suited for these applications. Thanks to their

modular design with a scale drum or scale tape and a separate scanning unit, these encoders are well suited for large hollow-shaft diameters and for the challenging installation requirements often encountered in robots due to space constraints. The signal quality of these secondary encoders is considerably better than that of the rotary encoders on the servo motor, meaning that the returned position values are significantly more accurate even for highly dynamic movements.

Step 3: Accurate position measurement for movable robots In order to reach all of the machining positions on very large or long components, such as an aircraft fuselage or for manufacturing large composite fiber components, robots can be moved along the length of the component on linear axes. For the highly accurate positioning of robots with a linear drive, enclosed linear encoders from HEIDENHAIN are available in lengths of up to 30 m. Position measurement from a linear encoder compensates for thermal errors and other factors that influence the feed mechanisms. These factors cannot be captured by means of conventional position detection methods based on the pitch of the recirculating ball screw and the

Fig. 4 : HEIDENHAIN linear encoders

angular position of the rotary encoder on the motor.

Conclusion: Highly-accurate position measurement improves accuracy at the tool center point The use of secondary encoders on all of a robot’s axes, as well as the use of linear encoders for positioning the robot relative to the workpiece, enables a level of accuracy at the tool center point that allows appropriately equipped industrial robots to perform positionally accurate machining and handling tasks on components. Angle and linear encoders from HEIDENHAIN and AMO offer not only the required system accuracy but also the necessary flexibility for installation in complex and compact robot mechanisms. The suitability of these encoders for safety-related applications also makes it possible to implement human-robot collaboration systems. Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) based products and Its applications

L

iquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) has come into existence since the late 1970s. Initially it was developed as two part systems cured by hydrosilylation reaction. These two part system includes: Part A= vinyl-end capped PolyDiMethylSilioxane (PDMS), platinum catalyst, inhibitor and Part B= PolyMethylHydroSiloxane (PMHS). These two parts are kept separately before curing to avoid any partial crosslinking during storage. This reaction is exothermic in nature. Finished LSR products are naturally transparent but may be easily colored by use of non-hazardous pigments. Liquid silicone rubbers do not contain any plasticizers, stabilizers, or promoters. Their exceptional flex characteristics are due to their unique chemistry.

Advantages of LSR over other solid silicone rubbers? High Temperature Vulcanization (HTV) silicone rubbers come in two different physical states: liquid and solid. These are respectively Liquid Silicone Rubbers (LSR) and High Cure Rubbers (HCR) -aka solid silicone rubbers. Solid silicone rubbers are processed in the same way as common organic rubbers. Liquid silicone rubbers (LSR) have the same structure as solid silicone rubbers but the chain length of the polydimethylsiloxane used for LSR is lower by a factor of about 6. Other major factors which distinguishes LSR from other solid silicone rubbers includes the following: Molding cycle time: Major factor where LSR leads is because of faster cycles involved in product generation

Complex geometries: Because of flow property in LSR, the liquid fits in the complex shape of mold Contamination: Due to the closed process involved in the production of LSR products, it results in low contamination

• Two Components (A and B) are supplied at a regular ratio by dosing pumps. • Part A and B are then mixed together in a mixing block and a static mixer. • If any color paste is necessary, it is then mixed with the compound • The platens and pistons which align and close the mold have settings for temperature, pressure, injection rate and cycle time • Combination of heat and pressure is applied to the LSR which cures the material until it solidifies. • Upon completion of the cycle, the mold opens and the part and flashing can be removed automatically or by a worker • Cured product comes of the mold and the process is repeated

Rollon actuators for injection molding

Stone Plastics’ customized 3-axis robot can extract parts to the end of the press, allowing them to put the presses closer together and to bring operator stations for multiple presses into close proximity, to efficiently handle material right at the aisle.

O

ff-the-shelf robots for injection molding parts removal tend to be more expensive and less flexible than those made inhouse. That’s why Stone Plastics & Manufacturing Inc. builds its own. Stone Plastics makes in-house, customizable robots for manufacturing plastic parts, allowing them to monitor and control costs, as well as serve more industries. For linear motion in their robots, the company uses actuators developed by Rollon Group, an Italian company present in India with a direct branch in Bangalore. Here’s a look at the role these actuators play in unloading plastic parts from injection molds.

Parts removal robots Mainly used for automotive and ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

consumer goods applications, Stone Plastics operates 68 injection molding machines ranging anywhere from 22 to 1.000 tons. They also have roughly 800 unique molds with up to 16 cavities in each. Aside from automotive and consumer goods, Stone Plastics makes plastic parts for applications in other industries such as furniture manufacturing, recreation, construction and appliance manufacturing. Stone Plastics’ customized 3-axis robot with end-of-arm tooling (EOAT) extracts the plastic parts from the molds. The EOAT is equipped with vacuum cups that remove the finished parts and drop them on a conveyor. Average cycle times for this process range anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds, www.engmag.in

depending on the application. Using their own custom design also lets Stone Plastics use floor space more efficiently. They can extract parts to the end of the press instead of the traditional side of the press, allowing them to put the presses closer together. This also lets them bring operator stations for multiple presses into close proximity to efficiently handle material right at the aisle.

About the actuators Stone Plastics uses three Rollon actuators for their 3-axis robot: R-SMART 160 SP6 for the X-Axis, R-SMART 120 SP4 for the Y-Axis and the S-SMART 65 SP actuator for the Z-Axis. The SMART linear actuators feature performance characteristics that meets their application requirements, including: • High speed and acceleration • High load capacity • High permissible bending moments • Low friction • Long life • Low noise Rollon’s R-SMART 120 and 160 actuators are a great choice for Stone Plastics’ robots due to their high load capacity and small footprint. The R-SMART achieves these capacities using dual profile rails instead of a single profile rail. Since downtime can be costly, Stone Plastics needed a reliable actuator. After reviewing the technical features, performance characteristics and overall

ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

capabilities, they decided that Rollon actuators were a natural fit. Another benefit of the high moment capacity is that a cantilevered gantry can be used when space is limited. The Instead of a gantry system, R-SMART can be used in a cantilevered XYZ system. This not only reduces cost from dual X-Axis actuators, but also removes additional complications and price adders such as controls, gearboxes, motors, connection shafts, etc. Using R-SMART as X and Y-Axes saved Stone Plastics money in both the long and short run.

The EOAT is equipped with vacuum cups that remove the finished parts and drop them on a conveyor. Chosen primarily for its strong economic value, the S-SMART Z actuator features a sturdy, well-designed anodized aluminum fixed drive head, as well as a robust moving extruded aluminum profile with a crosssection width of 65 millimeters. This high-quality actuator is driven by a steel reinforced polyurethane belt in an omega configuration. Payloads are easily supported by a single profile linear guide rail with two recirculating ball bearing runner blocks. For more information: ROLLON INDIA Pvt. tion. It is important to install as much computing capacity as possible, with the infrastructure around the storage units being required to meet the same requirements. In many projects, there is a three-stage power and distribution level for the uninterruptible power supply. In the system, which is built like a family tree, the maximum currents to be transmitted are 100A, 70A and finally 40A at the lowest distribution level. Up to 20 units are suspended at each end of a tree – in addition to memory, there are also e.g. fans, in order to reduce heat. Data centre planners are faced with the question of how to tie together and connect the different levels of power distribution as quickly as possible. The means of choice has often been hardwired prefabricated units in the field, not only in North America, where the largest data centres are. This method places high demands on the expertise of personnel in the field and also prevents a smooth build-up of systems at the installation site.

ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

As with many infrastructure-based requirements for connection technology, the HARTING Technology Group has also implemented just the right solution here for users, and has used this approach in numerous projects with the Han-Eco® plastic connector together with well-known storage operators. Han-Eco® series connectors win points above all thanks to their low weight, good handling and extremely robust design – factors which are absolutely essential for use on construction sites. As a contact insert, the Han Modular® system offers an extremely flexible option for power, signal and data transmission that meets all the specific requirements of the user. Not only do the required 40A, 70A or 100A current carrying capacities present no problem, the customer can also select different connection types and housing shapes. In addition to connection technology, many of our customers also have the option of purchasing entire cable assemblies from HARTING. The end-

to-end tested and optionally coded cables optimise the build-out of IT infrastructure and also reduce the risk of incorrect wiring to zero. Thus, in the event of malfunction, faults in the cabling can largely be ruled out, and individual memory elements can be exchanged quickly without special knowledge.

In Short • Storage operators rely on Han-Eco® plastic connectors and cable assemblies • Han-Eco® series: low weight, good handling and extremely robust design • End-to-end tested and optionally coded cables optimise the build-out of IT infrastructure

Servo hydraulic bar stop: Hatebur world novelty boosts productivity Fast, precise, reliable: Hatebur’s innovative servo hydraulic bar stop sets new forming technology standards. Dr. Ing. Mihai Vulcan

D

rawing the curtain for a world debut: After an indepth research and development phase, Hatebur presents the groundbreaking servo hydraulic bar stop. The technology is designed to make metal forming manufacturers more productive. “The servo hydraulic bar stop optimizes the shear surface and boosts the quality of forged parts. That facilitates and speeds up the quality control and can make post processing obsolete. The technology enhances the productivity of manufacturers”, explains Hatebur CEO Thomas Christoffel. The Swiss enterprise, a global leader in high-quality forming machines and tools, will offer the new technology on a variety of machine types. The innovation targets the first step of the metal forming process: Before the parts are formed in the various forming stations, the inductively heated steel bars need to be sheared off with highest precision. In the past, the shearing process led to a slight tilting and an oblique position of the sheared part. “Besides that, the shearing process changed into a tearing process towards the end, resulting in a so-called shearing break-out”, reports Mr. Christoffel. Sometimes scuffing was generated at the sheared surface, which needed to be removed from the finished forged parts by sandblasting. If these scuffing were pressed onto each other during the forming process, the producers needed to post process the parts by metal cutting.

Minimized scuffing Thanks to the innovative servo hydraulic bar stop, the tilting and oblique positioning can be drastically reduced, ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

and the surfaces are now virtually parallel. “Now, scuffing is rarely generated, and thus is practically never pressed into folds”, explains Dr.-Ing. Mihai Vulcan, an employee of Strategic Projects at Hatebur. Since 2017, Hatebur has been testing the technology thoroughly in a development partnership with a leading European automotive supplier. It was tested on a Hatebur HOTmatic HM75 XL. The results were outstanding: The scuffing on the shearing surface was able to be minimized from 20% of the surface to just 1%! The new bar stop technology also minimized or eliminated the shearing break-out. This resulted in a considerable quality improvement of the parts, facilitating and speeding up the visual control after the sandblasting. Thomas Christoffel: “If the quality control can be accelerated by only half a second per part, the technology already brings a real benefit to our customers.”

Position and force control The shearing process is incredibly fast: Depending on the bar diameter and the machine speed, it takes between 60 and 100 milliseconds. Only a servo hydraulic drive can offer the necessary dynamics and power density in a small space. The inter-divisional

Left: Part with shearing breakout, produced with a mechanical bar stop. Right: Part without shearing break-out, produced with the servo hydraulic bar stop. (Picture source: Hatebur)

The servo hydraulic bar stop minimizes the break-out through progressive force increase during the production. (Picture source: Hatebur)

The servo hydraulic bar stop ensures that the distance between blade and bar stop is constant throughout the whole shearing process. (Picture source: Hatebur) project team of Hatebur, led by Mihai Vulcan, applied an alternating position and force control. Should at the end of the in-feed movement the bar stop deviate from its target position even by only a few hundredths of a millimeter, the position of the bar stop will be immediately adjusted via the servo valve. “This position control allows us to keep the actual distance between the blade and the bar stop constant during the whole shearing process”, emphasizes Mihai Vulcan. After the shearing process starts, the control shifts to a force control with position monitoring. Throughout the process, the integrated measuring technology records the process data. When deviations are recognized, the automatic control adjusts imbalances immediately, ensuring an optimized surface quality. Web:www.hagenpr.com www.engmag.in

The R100-, R101- and R103with the new R200- and R201 sensors

ith the R200 and R201 designs, the forward-thinking product design of photoelectric sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs enables applications with longer operating distances. Just like the compact R100, R101, and R103 series, both new products consistently offer all photoelectric functional principles in a design that is now larger and suitable for specific mounting situations. Usability is intuitive and identical across all series and the standardized IOLink connection via the latest Smart Sensor Profiles also enables convenient and reliable integration of the sensors. With the R100, R101, and R103 series, as well as the new R200 and R201 sensors, choosing the relevant sensor is easier and users also benefit from maximum flexibility in every application and mounting situation. In terms of their technical features, the new series also include robust DuraBeam laser technology and high-precision Multi Pixel Tech-

nology (MPT) for distance measurement. Standardized usability across all series and functional principles plus the IO-Link interface facilitate parameterization of the sensors during commissioning and when there is a change to the functional principle or to another series.

Identical Functional Principles The new R200 and R201 series offer all photoelectric functional principles: thru-beam sensors, retroreflective sensors with a polarization filter or for clear object recognition, energetic diffuse mode sensors, sensors with background suppression and foreground suppression, measuring light barriers with two switch points, and distance sensors.

Perfect Usability All series have an intuitive and identical look and feel during parameterization. Quick and easy sensor adjustment is guaranteed by a multiturn potentiometer and a push button, which function as a combined operating element with three LEDs for visualizing the configuration, status, and diagnostics. n selective laser melting (SLM) a stable inert gas atmosphere must be ensured within the built chamber of the machine. A specified temperature range is also essential. Only under these conditions can high quality components be produced. It is further necessary to remove metal splash and smoke developing during the melting process. At formnext (hall 3.0, stand H 69) Gebr. Becker GmbH will be presenting two blower types developed precisely for these and similar applications. The key difference to other series is the gas-tight design which permits the precise control of the gas flow as well as the removal of contamination from the process. In combination with also gas-tight heat exchangers from the programme of Gebr. Becker they also create the conditions for an exact temperature control of the additive manufacturing process.

For plants with a small built chamber the gas-tight and speedcontrolled VASF side channel blowers of size 1.50 are ideal. They are of a highly compact construction and can be easily integrated in the plants, enabling the flow management of the inert gas in the closed circuit and low energy operation as required. For larger plants in additive manufacturing and the correspondingly higher volume flows of inert gas the gas-tight side channel blower VARIAIR SV 300 is used. Here too, the speed controlled energy efficient drive enables the delivery rate to be adapted to the actual requirements. Both blowers are designed for 24/7 industrial operation and proven worldwide in numerous demanding applications.

Mitsubishi Electric VFDs help farms grow operations Increasing number of farmers are turning to the latest Mitsubishi Electric variable frequency drives (VFDs), which allow a three phase motor to run from a single-phase electric supply without a phase converter, facilitating greater power and lower energy consumption

T

hree-phase power is often unavailable in rural and remote locations, which is a primary reason why farmers struggle to grow their operations. Any farm looking to run larger fans and motors to help increase storage and handling capacity have thus far been forced into using traditional solutions such as rotary phase converters, which are costly, have big capacitor banks and a high amp draw, running up electricity bills and erasing profits. Now, however, increasing numbers are turning to the latest Mitsubishi Electric variable frequency drives (VFDs), which allow a three phase motor to run from a single-phase electric supply without a phase converter, facilitating greater power and lower energy consumption. This trend is evidenced by D&E Equipment of Wilmington, Ohio, which was founded in 1954 by Walter Ewing. An expert in designing and installing bespoke farm infrastructure solutions such as grain storage bins, grain elevators, dryers, augers and grain handling systems, D&E is a family-run company that has built a reputation for quality

and service throughout the local agricultural community. With no two installations the same, D&E Equipment’s highly experienced workforce collaborates with each customer to fully understand and meet their specific requirements.

The challenge Modern agricultural operations make use of on-site infrastructure to store and maintain grain, selling their crop in several batches at different prices throughout the year to help maximise returns. Along with farm consolidation, this trend has helped fuel demand for ever-larger grain storage and handling infrastructure. However, since many agricultural operations are located in remote rural areas, they can quickly reach an impasse, severely hampering their ability to grow. “Unfortunately, many of our customers can only get single-phase power out to their farms,” confirms

D&E Vice President of Operations Mike Kees. With three-phase power vital for running the larger fans, motors and other equipment required to increase storage and handling capacity, farmers seeking operational growth have been forced to use a feasible, if far from desirable workaround: rotary phase converters. However, such devices are not only expensive, but draw large quantities of electricity.

The solution By working with Mitsubishi Electric and its local distributor, D&E has been able to offer customers a far more attractive solution in the shape of the latest VFDs. “Basically Mitsubishi VFDs allow us to ‘trick’ a three-phase motor into running from a single-phase electric supply without a phase converter, enabling greater horsepower,” explains Kees. “And since they are www.engmag.in

130 CASE STUDY

Mitsubishi Electric VFDs can provide a host of problem-solving benefits at farming operations worldwide

only used on the specific motor or other piece of equipment where they are needed, the VFDs are far more power-efficient and economical to run.” The impact of a Mitsubishi Electric VFD on a farm’s operation, Kees notes, can be huge – and instantaneous. “A maximum of 15hp [11.2kW] single-phase power is limiting,” he says. “Installing a Mitsubishi Electric VFD ensures that our customer becomes capable of using larger, faster equipment, while accessing more capacity by increasing the size of their operation. With their singlephase power supply and the VFD, they’re no longer limited on equipment size. A farm can move from, say, 700 bushels per hour to 1200 or 1700 bushels an hour through their drying system by using a conveyor that requires a 30hp (22.4kW) three-phase motor, though they still have a single-phase electricity supply. The VFD provides an immediate opportunity for them to grow their operation in a cost effective way.”

Farms can increase storage and handling capacity with Mitsubishi Electric VFDs

ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

According to Kees, this advantage is usually only the beginning as Mitsubishi Electric VFDs potentially provide a host of further problemsolving benefits. Among them is the capability to allow a ‘soft start’ increase of power draw when firing up equipment. This feature reduces the potential for tripping the overload, lowers the possibility of damaging expensive equipment, and increases service life. Another benefit of VFDs is their ability to simplify the combination of newly purchased equipment with existing older equipment and make it work effectively for the customer, a common challenge on the farm. If one conveyer, for example, is rated at 5000 bushels an hour and another is rated at 7500 bushels an hour, grain plugging and equipment breakage can occur if the incompatibilities are not evened out. Kees also appreciates how working with Mitsubishi Electric has enabled D&E to create further goodwill with its customers, and maintain and enhance the company’s long-standing reputation for quality: “We are service-driven and stand behind our products, and Mitsubishi helps us in that regard. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of their VFDs go wrong and require replacement. As a result, with the high costs of service and downtime on the farm, our customers are very happy.” He also notes that when VFD programming is needed, the customerfocused, partnership-driven attitude of Mitsubishi Electric and its distributor help D&E provide fast, effective service. “Our prior supplier insisted on keeping their system proprietary; if there was a programming issue we had to call and wait for them to come out,” Kees explains. “It could take several days and support costs were high. Contrast that with the Mitsubi-

Mitsubishi Electric automation solutions can be applied to numerous grain-handling

shi attitude – they actually train our guys on their system so we can do it ourselves, quickly. Again, that is a huge value add. Mitsubishi has a whole different business model and attitude; a partnership rather than a forced dependency.”

The results Ultimately, working with Mitsubishi Electric VFDs has created an entirely new stream of business for D&E, and stimulated the company’s interest in potentially helping customers apply additional Mitsubishi Electric automation solutions to grain-handling applications such as those relating to PLC controls, networking and temperature monitoring. “Mitsubishi VFDs are turning our service guys into sales people because they are going to farms and constantly seeing where customers can benefit,” concludes Kees. “In turn, this elevates job satisfaction among our staff as anytime you can fix something so effectively for a customer you’re going to feel good about it. In my opinion, VFDs will soon become as common on the farm as motors and augers.”

Oman Gas Leverages Digital DNA to Increase Reliability The organization has digitized its reliability and maintenance program by implementing Bentley’s AssetWise Asset Reliability solution. To reduce human intervention and avoid human fault analysis, the system leverages the inherent capabilities of AssetWise Asset Reliability to automate several processes

O

man Gas Company (OGC) is the principal gas transportation company of the Sultanate of Oman established in 2000. OGC operates a 2,500-kilometer high-pressure gas transmission network that runs the length and breadth of the Sultanate with annual gas transmission volumes of around 21.549 billion cubic meters. Other facilities include three compressor stations and 38 gas supply stations. The majority of the Sultanate’s industrial sectors, from power and desalination plants to fertilizer, methanol, petrochemicals, refineries, steel, and cement plants, rely on OGC to deliver the gas for their operations. OGC adopted an advanced reliability and integrity program that ensures production availability to meet its customer demands and achieve its goal of becoming “a world-class midstream gas value chain company.” The organization has digitized its reliability and maintenance program by implementing Bentley’s AssetWise Asset Reliability solution.

To reduce human intervention and avoid human fault analysis, the system leverages the inherent capabilities of AssetWise Asset Reliability to automate several processes including: • Ensuring the reliability, availability, and maintainability of the facilities down to the equipment level • Bad-actor analysis ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

• Alert and email notification of equipment condition • Follow up reminder of RCA recommendation • Approval route for bad actor, RCA, RCM, and RBI • Automatic analysis and notifications for operator routine duties using handheld devices The software utilizes these inputs to calculate reliability and availability of an individual asset based on an exponential reliability model. The weekly calculations are based on series and parallel configurations, which were previously performed monthly by a dedicated reliability engineer using Excel spreadsheets. The system introduces digital workflows using handheld devices for routine operator duties to bridge the disconnect between engineers and field operators by mapping trends, monitoring operational

parameters, and providing necessary technical support remotely. It also ensures that operational key performance indicators (KPIs) are achieved by monitoring the compliance status regularly. Bentley’s AssetWise Asset Reliability solution triggers an alert and email notification as soon as any value is out of range. With this technology, OGC has calculated a significant increase in reliability performance. This calculation is based on failure reduction against Mean Time to Repair and Cost of Lost Production Opportunity, which greatly impacts revenues and profits. Fahmi Reza, head of reliability and condition monitoring, Oman Gas Company, said, “The auto-alert and email notification features of Bentley’s AssetWise Asset Reliability are enabling us to improve our reliability growth at a significant rate of about 9 percent in a year.” www.engmag.in

146 ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

The new Gast 86/87R Series of oil-less rocking piston compressors & vacuum pumps While other manufacturers have been busy selling rocking piston compressors that produce a lot of noise and less-than-ideal pressure, Gast has been quietly setting the new standard by re-engineering our oil-less rocking piston from the ground up. The result is a unit that delivers quieter performance, higher pressure, a longer life and greater application flexibility. The sleek, new 86/87R Series is not just another pretty product. It’s beauty runs deep as it performs in ways not yet seen in the industry. The patented crossover chamber design regulates and controls airflow to dampen sound and optimize performance, while delivering a wide range of pressure level options. Because the 86/87R Series can easily retrofit into an existing footprint, it’s also a smart, flexible solution for a wide range of markets and applications, viz. Environmental, General industrial, medical, printing & packaging, food & beverage, transportation, laboratory, and material handling.

Designed to performs “When we set out to re-engineer our rocking piston compressor, we aimed to

do more than just increase pressure. We set out to dramatically reduce sound, enhance flow, create a standard footprint for easy retrofit anywhere in the world and improve the compressor’s aesthetics,” says Gast. The inherent design of rocking piston technology makes it the optimal choice for applications requiring high pressure or vacuum and air flow in a small package. The flexible cup is made with superior materials and mounted on top of the connecting rod, creating vacuum or pressure while maintaining a tight seal against the cylinder walls in a rocking motion. The forgiving design has fewer components, causes less friction and has a low exhaust temperature, for greater reliability and durability for the life of the product. Despite it’s small size, the versatility of 86/87R means this is the right product to deliver quality air solutions.

Inside Story

Mr.

Bhat

Managing Director Ador Welding Limited

in India’ and the ability of Indian companies to manufacture world-class products. We have the best brains in the world. All we need is the confidence, the belief and skill sets that we can rival the best the world has to offer. I have started with the implementation of the idea of ‘Make in India’ at my own company which makes all its products inhouse. Welding equipment and Welding consumables made at our factories are exported to all corners of the globe. We use Indian technology with indigenous brains and equipment. I am very sure that in the next 10 years India will make very strong headway into becoming the manufacturing hub for the world. I also believe as a society or organisation, we should focus on creation of ethos that defines what it means to be part of it.

My Life’s Goals Aim & Ambition: I strongly believe that the sustained motivation to excel comes from within. One must constantly keep improving and aligning oneself to the requirements of the day be it in terms of adapting to new technology or learning. I am a curious person and I always like to pick up learnings from any person I meet or circumstances I encounter. My motto is to move fast and take my team along. This has also enabled me to be down-to-earth and to be aware of my roots, which in turn helped me in laying the foundation for what I want to be in the future.

Business Goal: We are the only company in our sector to have grown both in values and volumes and to have increased our market share. I am sure of our abilities and firmly believe that we are going in the right direction. My goal is to take Ador Welding to Rs.1000 crores before I retire.

My Leisure Choices Favourite Tourist Spots: Exploring wild life in Africa, Lucerne in the Swiss Alps & Leh. Music I Like: Indian classical, Sports I Love: Cricket,Soccer, Hockey and Tennis

Vision: To create value for the society at large by imparting the experiences that I have gained through the years of having been exposed to many different situations. My personal and informal interactions happen not only with my direct reportees but to the last level of personnel working in our organisation. Understanding the aspirations of my co-workers and guiding them through the ranks and creating a strong organisation without parallel in the industry is what I aspire for. My vision for Ador Welding is to provide the best-in-class welding solutions to end users to enhance their operational efficiency. Staying relevant in today’s dynamics needs the awareness that the pursuit of excellence is not a choice, but rather it is mandatory.

Social Goal: I firmly believe in the concept of ‘Make ENGINEERING REVIEW | FEBRUARY 2019

Ask my Taste Buds Favourite Food: Dal Roti Favourite Drink: I enjoy single malt occasionally, but it’s Garam Chai for me most of the time.

In Awe of I Admire: Bright people with knowledge and would like to learn from them. I also admire the courageous leaders from the society, organisations, nations, sports who takes the challenging steps in order to initiate change. Leaders often play it too safe, to secure longevity. On the contrary leaders should be bold and have the will to improve the system-Steve Jobs, Narendra Modi, Ratan Tata, Anand Mahindra, Federer and Dhoni to name few. www.engmag.in
