Manufacturers can converge IT and OT to pool data from the factory floor with other areas of the business, such as customer insights. This gives manufacturers access to real-time enterprise data to increase visibility across the supply chain. Manufacturers can then use this information to make decisions. Connecting more devices to the IoT can help manufacturers working towards more intelligent manufacturing processes to do so, without investing in an entirely new system. Manufacturers can retrofit existing equipment with smart sensors to collect real-time data about the condition of legacy equipment. Access to information on machine condition will help manufacturers detect machine faults, giving them time to order a replacement part from a reliable automation parts supplier before downtime occurs. The possibilities inherent in linking the capabilities of digitalization to the physical aspects of industry by capitalizing on the growing abilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) and other technologies has earned a name of its own, Industry 4.0. The name comes from the fact that there were three other industrial revolutions identified in history. Ideally, a smart factory is flexibly automated and self-monitoring where machines, materials, and humans communicate with each other, sparing workers for other productive tasks and ultimately optimizing the design and production processes for elevated operational efficiency. Industry 4.0 can empower building what many refer to as ‘smart factory’ for a truly productive environment with benefits to manufacturers as well as consumers such as enhanced communication, real-time monitoring, advanced data analysis, and self-diagnosis. The Indian manufacturing sector has evolved drastically in the past few years and has become one of the high growth sectors of India. Initiatives such as Make in India and implementation of good and service tax (GST) have been the boosters in the growth of this industry. By 2020, India is expected to become the 5th largest manufactory country. Such a tremendous growth has a majority of made foreign nations positive and confident of India manufacturing industry.

Indian startup advances design of prosthetics with Autodesk Fusion 360 Tools Indian startup Social Hardware recently unveiled their modular assistive device connector, named the Avocado Wrist Connector for its resemblance to the fruit. Autodesk helped the team to apply generative design to the connector, focusing on minimizing weight while ensuring strength and durability – a problem often faced with a typical single prosthetic hand and socket device. The connector was launched at Autodesk’s first Design Night in India, the opening event of Hyderabad Design Week. A key benefit of generative design, a technology exclusively available in Autodesk Fusion 360, is
the ability to make lighter-weight parts, minimizing mass and material use while maintaining high performance standards and respecting engineering constraints. Generative design enabled the Social Hardware team to achieve a weight reduction for the connector from 300g to just 96g, a result that would have taken months through traditional design methods, but instead took less than a week. “The development of assistive devices includes many rounds of ideation and a lot of prototyping and testing for engineering design. Fusion 360 has made it incredibly easy for us to prepare designs for
rapid prototyping, speeding up the process of development and getting the connector ready to meet the needs of amputees across the country.” said Abhit Kumar, Co-Founder, Social Hardware. “The Avocado Wrist Connector has the potential to improve the lives of over half a million upper limb amputees in India, providing equal opportunity to people with disabilities,” said Haresh Khoobchandani, Vice President of Asia Pacific at Autodesk. “With its ability to explore options for reducing product weight through part consolidation and dramatically speed up the product development process, gen-
erative design is the future of manufacturing.” While the Avocado Wrist Connector is currently in the testing stage, Social Hardware is making it available as part of a STEM education kit to hobbyists, students, and education institutions to gather more feedback. The team has also partnered with rehabilitation centres across the country, including the Association of People with Disability, Karnataka and Nevedac Prosthetic Centre, Punjab to make their assistive devices available to users free of charge.

Industry 4.0. It encompasses academic education and research, approaches students and citizens, and strives to offer assistance to small / medium-sized enterprises and crafts on their way towards digital transformation. The FADZ receives support from regional politics, the Free State of Bavaria and the German federal government, and it builds a bridge from the Coburg University to the regional
businesses with practical application support and consulting. “The next step of the digital transformation is the human being. Education and further training now need to be strengthened. The tools are in place, now we need to ensure broadscale implementation by means of knowledge transfer for new ideas,” said Frank Carsten Herzog, founder and Managing Partner of the pioneering
company Concept Laser. Thanks to the laser melting process for metals, Herzog created excellent conditions for the “Generation 3D” at the Lichtenfels site. Sharing these competences of the company and the Coburg University with the general public is the mission that the FADZ is now willing to face. “If traditional technologies such as mould-related methods are disruptively replaced by additive processes, we
need to involve people and get them on board,” added Herzog. “With the help of a training campaign, today’s 3D tools can dramatically reshape our concept of processes and products. Basic and advanced vocational training is fundamental to the design of the digital future,” asserted Herzog.

Schmersal launches first ex-proof RFID safety sensor EX-RSS16 can be used in gas zone 2 and dust zone 22 At Motek 2019, the Schmersal Group is showcasing the first RFID-based safety sensor which has been designed in accordance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and can be used in EX zones 2 (gas EX, category 3G) and 22 (dust EX, category 3D). This means that the EX-RSS16 combines two important properties for system safety: functional safety in accordance with ISO 13849 and explosion protection. At the same time, the sensor features ignition protection classes Ex ec and Ex tc, covering the explosion protection function without requiring another energylimiting device. Schmersal launched this new development this year. The wear-free safety sensor is perfect for position monitoring of various 38 ENGINEERING REVIEW
The EX-RSS16 safety sensor can be used in gas zone 2 and dust zone 22 kinds of safety equipment, including the monitoring of doors, position monitoring of machine axles or other rotating, lateral shifting or removable safety equipment. Three different actuation directions also allow a flexible choice of installation position. The EX-RSS16 is available with or without latching. For example, the variant with a magnetic latching ensures that a door is held closed even when there is no voltage.
| NOVEMBER 2019
Because of the built-in RFID technology, the EXRSS16 enables individually coded variants with a coding level of high in accordance with ISO 14119, thus offering excellent tamper protection. The EX-RSS16 safety sensors have an optional diagnostic output or SD interface (Serial Diagnostics). Up to 31 safety switchgear devices with serial diagnostics can be connected in series. This means that the diagnostics data from the individual devices connected in series can be transferred via the SD gateway and a fieldbus (e.g. PROFIBUS) to a controller, e.g. status data or error messages. This means problems can be resolved more quickly. Advanced diagnostics data supports predictive maintenance
and helps prevent machine downtime. Control commands can be issued by the PLC to the devices connected in series. “The new EX version for gas and dust applications considerably extends the potential applications of the RFID safety sensor, which is already in strong demand because of its performance and cost-effectiveness,” explains Marlies Gerstkämper-Oevermann, Product Manager at the Schmersal Group. “The EX-RSS16 is suitable for many industrial areas in which the requirements of explosion protection apply.”

Women are underrepresented in India’s manufacturing sector : Satish Bhat Q. Do you think Manufacturing is offering a lucrative career opportunity for women?
Mr. Satish Bhat, Managing Director, Ador Welding Limited
Women are underrepresented in India’s manufacturing sector with participation ranging from only three in the core engineering sector while it goes up to 12% in the computer engineering sector as per latest studies. Compounding this problem and creating an urgency around getting more women into manufacturing is the fact that plenty of jobs are out there ready to be filled, as manufacturers currently face a workforce crisis. Attracting more women is critical to helping manufacturing companies grow, fill job vacancies, and replace their existing aging workforce. However, this does not mean that opportunities are scarce. With each passing year, we see an increased representation of women in the core manufacturing sector with companies consciously providing the necessary safety, convenience and skill development for women . There are a wide variety of positions including high-level, high-earning positions in manufacturing in areas such as life sciences, technology,
media and telecommunications, energy, automotive, and many others. Today we already have several examples of companies having significant women representation including our own.
Q. What kind of jobs do women get in this sector? There is a dearth of women in senior positions overall. A study reveals that this is due to lack of role models. To dwell on this topic further and reasons for it, I would say that this is due to a number of factors - some like a general underlying thought that women are not built to handle tough conditions on the shop floor. Women in India face biases in gender discrimination right from their upbringing where the roles of their parents become very crucial. When they grow up, they are expected to strike the right balance between work and family which makes them leave career half way to focus on their family among other issues. In the manufacturing industry, as a direct result of the abundance of men, internal company cultures tend to be male-oriented. Abolishing this culture will help increase women’s interest in manufacturing.
Q. What are the opportunities available to them for career progression? Women represent one of the largest pools of untapped talent for manufacturers and closing manufacturing’s gender gap is the key to closing the skills gap that has limited businesses’ ability to evolve and expand. In addition to filling open positions, gender diversity benefits manufacturing firms by creating a 60 ENGINEERING REVIEW

culture that improves their ability to innovate and grow. Today opportunities are available at every level for women in the manufacturing sector. The need of the hour is to facilitate the growth of women in their careers. The manufacturing Sector is facilitating this with actions taken to ensure that women are provided a conducive working environment and relevant training. Ador Welding has been taking giant strides in enabling the entry of women at various levels and providing opportunities to women on the shop floor. Women in manufacturing are increasing; they are building meaningful careers—and quite literally building the future.
Q. How is the women workforce distributed in your organization? What kind of job roles do they serve? We have taken a lot of effort to provide a conducive working environment to all employees within the organisation. We have a POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) policy in place with the sole intention of educating the male counter part on enabling a conducive working environment for his lady colleague at work. At Ador Welding we have women at all positions workinghand-in-hand with their male counterparts at our Manufacturing plants, be it as Manufacturing In-Charge, Welder on the shop floor or Women working 62 ENGINEERING REVIEW

on assembly lines. Besides we have women working across departments at senior managerial positions at F&A, HR, Legal & Secretarial, R&D & Marketing.
Q. Because of technological advancements, more women are now opting for jobs in the manufacturing sector as compared to IT industry. Your comments? I agree. Rapid technological advances and the convergence of physical and digital manufacturing are helping change the way manufacturers operate and raising the bar for required employee skill sets. The manufacturing sector is seeing large scale digitalisation, the use of IOT & AI as it progresses towards smart factories and Industry 4.O. The skill sets required for running these factories will even out the playing field to a great extent for women and hasten their presence in the Manufacturing sector. Also, the Manufacturing sector provides vast avenues for continuous core learning which gives an added appeal to this sector.
Q. How do you think the ratio of women workforce be increased in the manufacturing sector? Some thoughts… Attrition: It has been observed in India that a woman may take maternity leave and not come back. To ensure that
women are retained, the concept of parental leave should be brought into place, to ease the burden off women’s shoulder, and the responsibility could be equally divided between both the parents. Eliminate difference in Pay scales: There is still difference in pay scale when it comes to men and women, but now there are more women who are willing to work, a lot of them don’t really mind working odd shifts as well because they want to grow on par with men Creating the right culture: Organizations can unleash the full potential of their female workforces by creating a culture where unique strengths thrive. Culture can’t change without women in the room, so companies should incorporate strategies to attract high-performing women and develop solid retention strategies. Grooming them for Leadership positions: Further, focusing on leadership development can drive retention and foster diverse leadership perspectives. Understanding and addressing needs such as flexible workplace options also aid in recruitment and retention. If unique strengths aren’t thriving, it is time to adapt and make changes to build a beacon that attracts the best and brightest. www.engmag.in

AUTO SECTOR UPDATE
Auto sector plunge continues as demand remains slack, govt policies misfire As the country goes through an economic slowdown the auto sector seems to be witnessing one of its worst phases. ver the last year or so the automobile sector has been going through an extremely rough phase. If one goes by the numbers emanating from the industry, it’ll seem as if things have turned really grim. The slowdown has hit the sector so hard that even the arrival of the festive season has failed to revive it even partially. Almost all the major carmakers have cut down on production. Even

heavy vehicles and two-wheelers have witnessed a major slowdown in sales. Auto companies like Ford Corp., Hyundai Motors, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, etc. shut down production in more plants than was expected. An unheard of concept – non-working days – was introduced to the Indian auto sector. This affected the contractual workers the most as the term meant the plant will remain open but there won’t be any work done.
The September results continued to look dismal. Tata Motors registered a drop of 48.02 per cent in sales, according to a report in The Hindu. On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, -Maruti Suzuki India – the passenger car market leader, reported a 24.4 per cent decline in its total vehicle sales, including exports. A total of 122,640 units of Maruti, including exports, were sold in September, compared to 162,290 vehicles www.engmag.in
INDUSTRY FOCUS sold in September 2018. Out of the total sales, domestic sales fell 24.8 per cent to 115,452 vehicles. The auto major’s exports in the same month were recorded at 7,188 units, 17.8 per cent lower than 8,740 units exported in September 2018. Another auto major, Hyundai Motor India (HMIL), also reported a fall of 8.1 per cent in its overall sales from 62,757 units in September 2018 to 57,705 units in the same period this year. Interestingly, the company’s exports registered a growth of 13.5 per cent but it didn’t reflect in the overall results as its domestic sales plunged by 14.8 per cent. The situation of the commercial vehicle sector is even worse where sales dipped more than 62 per cent last month. Tata Motors sold only 8,097 passenger cars in September, which is a decline of 56 per cent compared to the same period last year when the company had sold 18,429 units. Furthermore, Mahindra & Mahindra’s automotive sales went down overall by 21 per cent in September 2019 to 43,343 units compared to 55,022 vehicles in the same period last year. Having said all that there was some positive impact of the recent policy changes made by the government. Sales momentum during August 2019 did move up marginally, however, most market observers opined that more time was required for the recent policy measures to take effect and extra incentives need to be given to customers for the growth trend to reemerge. In an apparent effort to boost consumption and increase investments by private companies, the government reduced corporate tax rate from 30 per cent to 22 per cent. The effective tax to be paid by the companies will be 25.17 per cent. However, in my opinion the government measures are slightly misdirected. Instead of equipping the consumer 66 ENGINEERING REVIEW
| NOVEMBER 2019
with the necessary buying power, the measures focus on the supply side. The problem is – if the consumer does not have the resources how will he buy anything? No matter what we proclaim about our consumption pattern, buying a car in India is still a status symbol. Hence, the priority of owning an automobile in an Indian’s life is still way below many other things. However, sales plunged once again in September as passenger car off-take went down by 23.69 per cent and that of commercial vehicles by 62.11 per cent. This proves that government measures have not really helped the ailing sector. Maruti-Suzuki, the country’s largest automaker has cut down production for the eighth time in as many months. Seemingly, the government is missing the woods for the trees. This is evident from the statements emanating from the Union finance ministry. The Union finance minister blaming the millennials for the downturn does not only show a lack of understanding but also a blatant trivialising of the problem. According to most economic experts, things won’t change in the near future and definitely not in October. Unless the demand side is reinvigorated chances are bleak that things will look up for the automobile sector. Another point to be noted is that while we are focused on the production of automobiles we seem to have become distracted from the auto ancillary industry. This segment witnessed an overall decline of around 10 per cent and job cuts of approximately eight to 10 lakhs. The captains of the ancillary industry don’t expect any relief in the immediate future. However, there is a streak of good news amidst all this gloom. According to data from TAM, there has been some growth in auto advertisements in the southern parts of the country. In the four major southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala
and Karnataka, automobile ad volumes have shown a hefty hike in print media. Festive ad volumes from automobiles in print media showed a 3.3 times growth this year as compared to Onam 2018. The rise in ad volume is led by tyres that have shown 8.7 times increase in print compared to Onam in 2018. In TV, tyres saw 7.9 times growth against the same period last year, and for radio it was 11.1 times growth. Meanwhile, all three financial institutions namely, Reserve Bank of India, World Bank and International Monetary Fund, have cut down on India’s growth figures drastically. While RBI has projected the GDP growth to be 6.1 per cent down from 6.9 per cent which the apex bank had predicted in April this year, the World Bank has projected six per cent, down from 7.5 per cent. The IMF forecast is a little better at seven per cent which is still considerably lower than its earlier figures. People seem to be getting euphoric over the surge in the stock markets after the government slashed corporate taxes. What nobody seems to realise is that buying or selling shares do not boost industrial activities or produce physical assets or generate employment. A share market boom can happen even when foreign institutional investors pour in money into the exchange. Stock markets are not really a very good indicator of an economy. It is unlikely that the economy will turn around any time soon in the face of global slowdown and misdirected policies. To revive the auto sector mere tax cuts won’t suffice, the demand has to be rekindled to offload inventories. We can only hope the government will do something to revive the demand side of the economy in the next few months.

s the downward slide of the economy continues it is time that we do some sectoral introspection. All the sectors of the economy have been impacted negatively over the last couple of years with automobile, realty and agriculture being the worst. Manufacturing, too, has taken a severe beating over the last few quarters. studies have estimated that every job created in manufacturing has a multiplier effect in creating two to three jobs in the services sector. However, despite the transformation of the economic structure India could not really become a manufacturing hub like China became. India’s manufacturing sector contracted to its lowest level since 2012. This negative growth was primarily the result of the slowdown in the electricity and manufacturing sectors. This was the steepest fall in over six years, according to chief economist at India Ratings and Research, Devendra Kumar Pant. Trends did not change in September and the slide continued. INDUSTRY FOCUS would pick up with the approaching festive season. But alas, nothing of the sort happened. There were heavy speculations that the trade war between China and the US would yield unprecedented gains for India. It was predicted by certain experts that several multinationals would wind up their operations from China and relocate to India. However, many multinationals did wind up their production units from China but they did not turn to India. Instead Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh and Myanmar reaped the benefits of fresh investments. Ashwath Ram, Managing Director, Cummins India Limited, said, the current sluggishness in the Indian economy arises from several factors including the prevailing liquidity situation, delays in awarding of infrastructure projects, banking sector including the shadow banks continuing to sort through their funding constraints. These factors have all resulted in reduction in demand across our key segments in the domestic business. In our estimation, this is likely to play out further for some time with a gradual revival thereafter. The government has already undertaken significant actions to boost the economy, including allocating incremental funds to the execution of infrastructure projects, easing out liquidity as well as reduction in corporate tax rate, accompanied by interest rate cuts.” The growth rate in September and August has been the slowest since May 2018. This has been a cause of great worry for the government and policymakers. Overall demand only rose marginally in September, hurt by almost no growth in exports, and firms barely increased employees last month, a survey showed. Fitch Ratings on Thursday last pared down the growth forecast of India’s GDP in the current fiscal to 5.5 70 ENGINEERING REVIEW

per cent, from its earlier prediction of 6.6 per cent, saying a large credit squeeze emanating from shadow banks has pushed economic growth to a six year low. Interestingly, Fitch’s figure is lower than that of the Indian central bank which has forecast 6.1 per cent for the current fiscal. However, some banks, aligned with the government, have started expressing optimism that the GDP growth rate will touch seven per cent by the next fiscal and eight per cent thereafter. Unfortunately, they are yet to come up with any credible reason for such a surge in the economy. We have to carefully watch the data emanating over the next quarter to come up with a credible forecast. Unfortunately, the current government has been attempting to cook its account books to cover up its failures. In the very first year after coming to power the government tweaked with the base year for calculating the gross domestic product. Unfortunately, it didn’t serve the purpose of covering up the ineptitude of the government. According to a 2015-16 report of a business newspaper, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, Make in India, failed to make any positive impact on the country’s manufacturing sector. Official data show that during 2015-16, the first full financial year of the Modi government, three non-manufacturing sectors - services, computer software and hardware, and trading, attracted more than 41.5 per cent of the FDI inflow, whereas core manufacturing sectors such as automobiles, chemicals, power, pharma and construction received a mere 14 per cent of the total FDI. However, the government has come up with extensive advertisements claiming the success of the Prime Minister’s pet scheme. Similarly, exports have also remained stagnant and the balance of payment
improvement is on account of lesser imports. The current slack in the manufacturing sector is not an overnight development. Things started going downhill from 201516. According to data received from official sources, FDI into each of the three key manufacturing sectors registered a sharp decline in 2015-16 vis-a-vis 2014-15. Investments into the automobile industry, for example, fell from a little over $2.7 billion to $2.5 billion in the period mentioned above. The pharma and construction sectors saw even sharper declines in investments. While foreign investments into pharma companies nearly halved, the construction sector attracted less than a sixth of foreign money in 2015-16, as compared to the previous year. Every economy goes through cycles. Even the Great Depression of 192930 did not last forever but inflicted massive damage which took decades to recover. But there must be proper policies to deal with such adversities. Unfortunately, under the current circumstances our government seems completely clueless. The powers that be have been manipulating numbers and coming up with kneejerk solutions which may work for a little while but in the long run won’t survive. A paradigm shift from the current policies is required. The incumbent Finance Minister is singularly inept and unqualified for the job. Prime Minister Modi will be well advised to begin the recovery process by replacing her with more competent Minister. There seems to be an acute shortage of truly qualified people in the current government who can be trusted to overcome the downward spiral of the economy.

Simple support structure improves the efficiency of a Warehouse Packaging Module
Though limited by challenging design constraints, N-III created a supporting structure that mounts underneath a distribution center packaging module, integrating an arrangement of plywood, aluminum extrusions and Rollon linear bearings.
A
utomation is changing how traditional distribution centers operate as companies search for new ways to maximize their efficiency, increase order accuracy and fulfill customer demand. When it comes to automated technology, most people tend to think about robots, automated guide vehicles and pick-and-place systems. But just as important are the smaller, simpler structures that must be engineered to interface with the high-tech systems, and their designs present their own set of challenges. Rollon, a multinational company specialized in the production of linear, telescopic, actuators and automation systems, is well aware of this and developed specific experience in this field, operating internationally through a series of local branches, including the Bangalore office in India. Rollon’s experience has been useful to the American systems integrator N-III Inc. that recently devised a simple, yet large-scale solution to improve the efficiency of an existing warehouse packaging staging module. 72 ENGINEERING REVIEW
| NOVEMBER 2019
Though limited by challenging design constraints, the company created a supporting structure that mounts underneath the existing module and integrates an arrangement of plywood, aluminum extrusions and Rollon linear bearings, an achievement that required attention to ergonomics, ease of assembly and cost efficiency.
Engineering Challenges In this recent application, an automated package distribution center was looking to improve its packaging modules. Each module is made up of four chutes that feed packages from the top of the system down to the station operator. The operator is notified of an order and, from there, can pull it out, package it and place it onto a conveyor belt beneath the chutes. The customer wanted to incorporate support platforms onto the design of this existing structure, which the operators could utilize to box the finished orders. A few solutions were initially proposed, including a scissor lift, drop shelf and a motorized, wheeled cart. However, all of these systems would
operate apart from the existing module without having to mechanically interface with it. These ideas were ultimately scrapped because they were too costly or had ergonomic problems associated with them, requiring workers, for example, to twist, running the risk of injury. N-III ended up solving these issues with a simple design that connects to the module and even uses its existing bolt holes. For a work surface, the engineers created tables made of strong ply, which they capped with an ABS plastic. These ABS “tops” were water jet cut and served as the template to rout the tables from the ply. The tables were then mounted onto a Rollon linear slider, which was mounted simply into a standard aluminum extrusion. From there, workers can slide a table along the length of the chutes to where it is needed—a taping station, for example. While there is one table per four modules, tables can travel freely across up to 12 modules, maximizing design flexibility and minimizing the number of tables that need to be installed. www.engmag.in

The linear bearings used in the packaging module had to handle very high loads. A 150-pound package placed at the end of a table, for example, would create a 600-pound moment load on the supporting structure.
Structural Engineering Required The success of N-III’s solution is owed, in part, to engineers’ flexibility over the course of the design process. For example, it became apparent that the use of a 1 x 1-inch lateral bar would not be able to accommodate the moment loads created by the weight of the packages on the table-tops. A 100-pound package placed at the end of a table would create a 600-pound load on the supporting structure, pulling the bearing out of the rear track. To ensure that the system could hold up to these loads, engineers first ran a finite element analysis (FEA) test to analyze and compare system stress under loads using a 1 x 1 and 1 x 2 lateral bar. Whereas the 1 x 1 bar deflected, engineers discovered that the 1 x 2 bar could handle the high loads of the heavy packages. They therefore integrated this new component into their design.
Designed For Assembly N-III’s solution overcame several design constraints, all of which were dictated by the existing packaging structure. For one, engineers had to figure out a way to attach the tables to the structure without any additional drilling or the use of T-nuts. Besides being more expensive than the aluminum sliders themselves, logistically, incorporating T-nuts would have been 74 ENGINEERING REVIEW

Instead, the engineers designed pre-drilled and tapped bars that, once inserted into the extrusions, readily aligned with the track’s 4,000 existing bolt holes. It was also important that the design maintain a certain height so as not to impede the conveyor belt beneath the staging module once it was attached. N-III’s solution added only four inches to the vertical space between the module and the conveyor underneath.

Rollon Compact Rail Combats Misalignment Bearings that aren’t aligned properly during installation can cause problems on any precision machine, resulting in wear or even reduced bearing life. The Rollon Compact Rail system is inherently tolerant of misalignment, thanks to a rail geometry that can absorb alignment errors in one or two axes. Whereas ultra-high precision guides measure acceptable misalignment in arc minutes and microns, the Compact Rail measures it in degrees and millimeters. For example, Compact Rail rollers can rotate up to 2 degrees relative to the rail without affecting functionality or increasing wear. For machine builders, having a self-aligning system results in greater design freedom and cost reduction. Simple spacing tools make installing to the proper tolerance easy.

Ballscrews with Rotary Nut Ground Ballscrews with Rotary Nut- FSWT Series Features • Our high slenderness ratio ballscrew can be used at high feed speed without causing inertia. • In the past with long ballscrew assemblies, the nuts couldn’t react immediately. A rotary nut can have a high feed speed with high lead and still achieve accuracy. • The design of the screw shaft journal can be simpli¬fied because it does not need support bearings. • Structure • Roller thrust bearings must be installed on rotary nuts because the support bearing is larger than the regular bearing, therefore the rigidity in the shaft direction has been increased. • It is possible to lubricate the ballscrew and the bearing installed on rotary nuts at the same time. • Lubrication for rotary nuts is complicated since rotating unions are necessary to feed lubricant directly into the nut, and centrifugal forces push all lubricant away from the balls and groove. • The design of the nuts end face can be directly secured by the use of the timing pulley.

Diaphragm chucks for grinding & turning centres functions similar to a human’s diaphragm that contracts and retracts. They offer many advantages as compared to standard chucks. Unlike standard chucks that rely on the wedge and master jaw linkage for clamping, a diaphragm chuck applies the principle of elastic deformation in expanding, contracting and using resistance to hold work pieces in place. Because diaphragm chucks don’t have sliding components, they don’t require lubrication and offer a more consistent grip force repeating to within 10 microns. Diaphragm chucks are primarily used for secondary operations, eg., grinding, boring, facing and light turning. Preferably, the locating surface should be a pre-machines or precision cast surface. Similar chuck locating diameter tolerances should be held to a total of 0.15 mm; on the larger chucks a total of 0.38 mm can be maintained. Standard diaphragm range is available in 160 mm, 200 mm, 250 mm, 315 mm and 400 mm sizes.
How Diaphragm Chucks work Diaphragm chuck utilizes the inherent strength and accuracy of spring steel to achieve the required pressure for external and internal surfaces. When the drawbar is actuated (air introduced via the spindle and adaptor plate in the case of pneumatic version), the piston moves forward 0.45mm. The movement is transmitted to the diaphragm by a pusher sleeve. 80 ENGINEERING REVIEW

Let’s know Digital Multimeter
I
n the past, to measure different electrical parameters like Voltage, Current, Resistance, separate meters were required. The problem was more prominent where on-field testing was done, to carry all these meters was a hectic task. But eventually, as technology evolved all these parameters got combined into one product called Multimeter.
What is a Multimeter? A Multimeter is an electronic instrument combining several different functions. It was also called as AVO meter as earlier it had three primary functions only, like measurement of Voltage, Current, Resistance. It used to have an analog pointer and was of big size. As electronics evolved everything became compact. Multimeters also became compact. A lot of parameters got incorporated in Multimeter apart from Voltage, Current & Resistance like Capacitance, Frequency, Diode testing, Continuity testing, duty cycle, Temp. measurement. So to sum up, a Multimeter is a handheld device used for basic fault finding and service work in the field. It also comes in a benchtop type models with very high accuracy of the measurement.
The criticality of Usage of Multimeter Abnormal power conditions occur at any point of time in home, industries. Such abnormal conditions can lead to damage of different equipment’s resulting in significant revenue losses. A multimeter is often used to troubleshoot electrical glitches in a wide range of industrial and household devices such as motor controls, power supplies, electronic 84 ENGINEERING REVIEW

equipment’s, domestic appliances, and wiring systems
Basics of Multimeter A multimeter has some parameters like Digits & Counts, Basic Accuracy, Average & Trms, Type of category protection in multimeter, Type of connections. One must know all these parameters in depth so as to select the right model of Multimeter. Let us understand these parameters in detail.
Digits & Counts Usually whenever we purchase a Multimeter first thing that comes into mind is Digits & Counts. The number of digits decides the maximum value multimeter can display and counts decide when the range will be changed while taking various measurements. For Eg. If a Multimeter is 3 ½ digit and 2000 counts Multimeter, then it will display 3 full digits and first Most significant digit will be half like 0 or 1. As shown below 3 ½ digits = 1 9 9 9 = 2000 Counts 3 ¾ digits = 3 9 9 9 = 2000 Counts 4 ½ digits = 1 9 9 9 9 = 20000 Counts So we can say as the number of digits and counts increases in a Multimeter so as the accuracy and range of the multimeter will also increase.
Basic Accuracy The multimeter has the capability to measure various parameters, but when a basic accuracy of a multimeter is asked DC voltage accuracy is specified as per Industry norms. The reason why it is specified as basic accuracy since it is the best accuracy a multimeter can offer due to its design in which it processes the data. As we can observe from fig.1 for giving data to analog to digital
converter it is being converted into DC voltage as A to D converter only accepts DC voltage input. Hence all other parameter goes through the process of conversion whereas DC voltage is just attenuated and given directly to A to D converter. So highest accuracy is achieved while measuring the DC voltage and hence it is specified as basic accuracy of Multimeter.
Average & TRMS There two types of Multimeter available popularly categorized as Average & TRMS. Basically an average meter average outs the value of the signal and resultant average value is zero for pure sinusoidal wave. So an average multimeter is calibrated for the pure sine wave and it measures the RMS values of sinusoidal waves, thus it is also called as Average RMS. Here it is important to note that an average RMS multimeter treats all signals as sine wave and displays the readings. So it does not read the values accurately for signals apart from sine wave. A TRMS Multimeter chops any type of wave takes the instantaneous values and calculates the root mean square value of the signal. Thus giving an accurate reading for any type of wave under measurement. So a TRMS multimeter is useful where there are non-linear loads and have a lot of disturbances in signal quality. Hence, it becomes very important to rightly select the multimeter according to the application and type of signal quality present in the premises.
Type of connections It is very important to know how one should connect the multimeter while measuring the voltage and current as it can lead to serious accidents. Voltage is always measured in parallel, www.engmag.in

Fig. 1 hence while measuring the voltage you can directly connect the two leads of multimeter into mains socket or any voltage measurement points of devices, as in this case multimeter is connected in parallel. Whereas current is measured in series, so a load has to be always connected across the multimeter while measuring current, if the multimeter is not connected in series, then a large amount of current will flow from the multimeter. This will result in the burning of multimeter and also cause danger to the human being. Some multimeter also provides terminal blocking system so as to avoid wrong connections and enhance the safety of the user.
Category Protection in Multimeters Multimeters are hand-held devices and are often used for testing of live objects. There is a high probability, if a transient occurs in system it will also pass through them. Understand86 ENGINEERING REVIEW

ing this IEC 61010 devised protection called Category protection in which it states protection of multimeter against such transients at different voltage levels depending on the area of usage/application. There are four category protections like CAT IV, III, II, I categorized for different area of application with operating voltages like 600V, 1000V. The level of protection increases as we move closer towards the source from where electricity is generated. For e.g. If a multimeter has CAT protection of CAT IV 600V it can sustain a transient of 8kV for certain microseconds, thus it will be suggested for environment operation outside the industry. Thus it is very important for one to select the multimeter with the right category of protection depending on the area of application. Rishabh has a wide variety of Multimeters to offer to start from basic multimeters like Rishabh Young/iYoung, Rishabh 410 useful
for Technical students, Electricians & Service industry, for industrial segment Rishabh 6k series, Multi series is available which have features like automatic terminal blocking system to avoid wrong connections, dual display facility, drop-proof meters, there is an advanced series of multimeters like Rishabh 60k series with Bluetooth catering to high-end applications like Axle counters, Automation, VFD drives etc. Thus with a wide variety of range of multimeters Rishabh caters to different segments of customers, offering solution to each segment.

edia resistance, low moisture absorption, lubrication-free and corrosion-free: these are the requirements for machine components which the food and beverage industry have to meet today. The detection of foreign bodies plays a major role in the production and packaging of food to ensure the perfect quality of the products and to prevent contamination. Therefore, igus has now developed the tribologically optimized plain bearing material iglidur FC 180 (FC = “Food Contact”) specifically for food contact. The new material is visually detectable by its blue colour as well as by metal detectors due to the inclusion of appropriate, food-compatible additives. In this way, broken pieces can be quickly detected and removed in the event of damage to the system. As a result, the purity of the product is secured and costly product recalls are prevented. The new material complies with the specifications of the FDA and EU Regulation 10/2011 and can therefore be used in direct food contact. Its low moisture absorption and lubrication-free property are additional criteria that shows how igus material are perfect for applications in the food technology, beverage and packaging industries.

EtherCAT Technology Group officially supports EtherCAT G The Technical Committee of the EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG) has accepted EtherCAT G as an addition to the EtherCAT standard. Moving forward, EtherCAT G, which extends EtherCAT technology to 1 and 10 Gb/s, respectively, will be supported and promoted by the ETG.
E
therCAT G was introduced by Beckhoff Automation in 2018 as an extension of the EtherCAT standard. Beckhoff recently presented the gigabit technology addition to the ETG, and after thorough review, the organization’s Technical Committee accepted it. Right now, the ETG is working to add EtherCAT G to the corresponding technology specifications. Dr. Guido Beckmann, Chairman of the ETG Technical Committee, explains why ETG welcomes the active integration of EtherCAT G into ETG: “EtherCAT is already the fastest industrial Ethernet fieldbus, and will remain so due to its special functional principle. With EtherCAT G, particularly data-hungry applications, such as machine vision and high-end measurement technology, can now also be integrated. This extends the range of applications for EtherCAT technology and makes it even more viable for the future.” The well-known 100 Mb/s EtherCAT technology remains the proven solution for the majority of applications. However, EtherCAT G offers additional user advantages, especially in applications where particularly large amounts of process data must be transported per device. This can include, for example machine vision, high-end measurement technology or complex motion applications that go beyond the scope of classic drive control. As an extension of standard EtherCAT technology, EtherCAT G is fully compatible;

mode. “The advantages of EtherCAT are well known and include processing on the fly, comprehensive diagnostics, simple configuration and integrated synchronization,” says Beckmann. “These attributes are of course fully retained when EtherCAT G is used.”
This example network architecture incorporates standard EtherCAT, EtherCAT G and EtherCAT G10 for faster communication and greater data throughput. (picture credit: Beckhoff Automation) existing devices designed for 100 Mb/s can be seamlessly integrated into an EtherCAT G system, and EtherCAT G devices in a 100 Mb/s EtherCAT system behave like classic EtherCAT devices. The central element of EtherCAT G is the use of EtherCAT Branch Controllers, which essentially fulfil two main functions: On the one hand, they act as a kind of node for the integration of segments from 100 Mb/s devices; on the other hand, they enable parallel processing of the connected EtherCAT segments. This significantly reduces the propagation delay in the system, which increases system performance many times over previous levels. Typical for EtherCAT: The integration of EtherCAT G is simple, as the extension is fully compatible with the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard and no software adaptions in controllers are required for the standard
About EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG): The EtherCAT Technology Group is an organization in which key user companies from various industries and leading automation suppliers join forces to support, promote and advance the EtherCAT technology. With over 5,500 members from 65 countries the EtherCAT Technology Group has become the largest fieldbus organization in the world. Founded in November 2003, it is also the fastest growing fieldbus organization.
About EtherCAT®: EtherCAT is the Industrial Ethernet technology which stands for high-performance, low-cost, easy to use with a flexible topology. It was introduced in 2003 and has been an international IEC standard and a SEMI standard since 2007. EtherCAT is an open technology: anyone can implement or use it.

Schmersal produces AZM300 with innovative Plasma-SealTight® technology for the first time New manufacturing process for plastic-metal bonds is being tested in first industrial application
A
new, innovative process to manufacture plastic-metal bonds is currently being tested in an industrial application. Plasmatreat GmbH has developed a process for hybrid injection-moulded parts in cooperation with the plastic compound manufacturer AKRO-PLASTIC GmbH. This new process provides a significant improvement to bonding in hybrid plastic-metal components and can be integrated into series production lines. The Schmersal Group is now using this innovative Plasma-SealTight® technology process for the first time in a pilot project to produce its AZM300 solenoid lock. Used on safety doors, this interlock features a metal bracket integrated into a plastic actuator. The bracket engages with an interlock crosshead to ensure that safety doors are securely closed. A reliable, firm bond is crucial during the joining process to produce a high-quality, resistant joint between the dissimilar materials plastic and metal. In a plastic-metal bond, interfaces without a special seal represent a constant contact surface where water, air or other media ingress. The Plasma-SealTight® plasma seal process developed by Plasmatreat and AKRO-PLASTIC offers a completely new approach to providing a highly bonding, media-resistant hybrid joint. In this new industrial solution, the plastic compound formula, the process parameters, and

A firm bond is crucial to ensure quality in plastic-metal hybrid components. the composition of a plasma-polymer seal layer created under atmospheric pressure were matched to one another in such a way that they would create a durable, media-tight bond in the component. The advantage of the new process is that it not only achieves better product quality, but also a reliable, reproducible, cost-efficient production process with the added bonus of respecting the environment. Thanks to the Plasma-SealTight® technology, there is no need to apply cost-intensive, environmentally harmful chemicals to metal surfaces. Such chemicals are often used to create a firm bond with the help of solvent-based adhesion promoters. The AZM 300 is an innovative safety interlock which is now used in many sectors of industry. AZM 300’s outstanding features include a new patented operating principle
with a hub and cross-head. It brings the advantage that the safety door is pulled into its end position when closed and is securely locked free of almost any clearance. The solenoid interlock operates as an integrated guard catch, hence removing the need to fit a separate catch. An RFID sensor is used to identify the actuator reliably, thus providing three different code levels and, consequently, protection against manipulation. After the new process has proven its worth in the pilot project, Schmersal intends to use it in both new and existing products, thus producing them even more efficiently.

TECH TRENDS to this, these rooms have large swirl outlets installed as standard, which do not blow the air into the room straight, but instead continually swirl it, consequently air flows are often incorrectly measured at these locations. And this complicates the determination of the volume flow substantial.
SOLUTION The volume flow hood testo 420 sets new standards regarding weight and precision. With only 2.9 kg and ergonomic handles, frequent or difficult measurements too, can be carried out comfortably, without inducing fatigue, and therefore safely. It converts the turbulence at the swirl outlets into an almost uniform air flow, leading to a considerably more accurate measurement. In addition to this, the hood records the ambient climate using an integrated tempera-
ture and humidity sensor as well as an absolute pressure sensor. The application is simple too: Funnel-shaped tension rod sockets support easy and quick set-up, and the trolley included in delivery
ensures safe transport. Via Bluetooth App integration, smartphones and tablets can be used as a second display and remote control. After the measurement, the App allows the finalization and sending of the measurement protocol directly on site. Differential pressure or Pitot tube measurements are also possible with the removable measuring instrument by simply entering the duct geometry. With the volume flow hood testo 420, users can quickly and accurately fulfil the legal regulations on Indoor Air Quality for ventilation and air conditioning systems in commercial buildings and schools.
KEY FEATURES • More precise measurement of volume flow at larger swirl outlets • Uniquely light, with only 2.9 kg • Fast set-up, easy handling and convenient operation thanks to mobile App

or many instrumentation applications in chemical and petrochemical plants, and especially for analyzer sample conditioning systems, it is essential to maintain an elevated temperature in order to prevent condensation or crystallisation of the media and corresponding inaccuracy of results. Complete insulation of measurement and analysis stations is rarely possible due to requirements for maintenance and calibration. Intertec has released new Hot Box for outdoor process sampling applications, which can deliver high temperatures up to 150°C/300°F in compact footprints. Intertec’s easy-access hot boxes provide an efficient heating solution thanks to the way they are constructed, using high-performance insulation sandwiched between sheets of GRP (glassfiber reinforced polyester). The new hot boxes employ a combination of conduction and convection heating assisted by a novel air circulation system. Protective enclosures are usually necessary for analyzer applications and are a major contributor to overall costs. stantially reduce the hidden costs of analyzer installations such as heated sample lines. All of the materials have low thermal conductivity, and the sandwich construction means that enclosures can be fabricated using bonding techniques, avoiding the ‘thermal short cuts’ between inner and outer shells that metal enclosures and metal fixings create. The overall thermal insulation of a sandwich-construction GRP enclosure is typically more than twice as good as a steel enclosure with the same insulation thickness and provides a highly stable environment for maintaining elevated temperatures. Among many applications, the hot boxes are helping plant operators to implement the monitoring and analysis required to meet new flare stack combustion rules. The new hot boxes use electric heaters that have a flat side for conductive heat transfer, and a finned side for efficient heat transfer to the internal atmosphere using convection. The conductive face of the heater is attached to an aluminium plate. The sampling equipment is assembled onto a second detachable plate, which bolts onto the heated plate with the assistance of thermal transfer paste for optimal heat conductivity. The heaters are designed for hazardous area (potentially explosive) applications and employ
positive temperature coefficient or PTC cartridges. As their electric resistance increases with rising temperature, the heaters are self-limiting, ensuring that the surface temperature will never exceed the maximum temperature of the listed temperature class. Intertec’s electric heating systems meet an exceptional range of hazardous area approvals including IEC, ATEX, CSA/NRTL, EAC, and many other national certificates for countries including China, Brazil and South Korea. The exact temperature inside the hot box is controlled by Intertec’s explosion proof smart controller, which provides programmable digital PID (proportional-integral-derivative) control. The temperature sensor for the controller can be mounted at the optimum position in the enclosure to ensure accurate control. As the style of self-limiting heater used reduces heat output as temperature increases, Intertec has designed a novel feature to improve operational performance. A processing plant’s instrument air service can be connected to provide a very low flow, which is introduced into the enclosure via perforated tubing that releases the air between the fins of the heater(s). This air flow continually moves the warmer air away from the heater, which as a result then maintains a higher heat output. www.engmag.in

TECH TRENDS With the heating system running at a higher rate, hot temperatures can be achieved both more quickly and very evenly throughout the enclosure’s interior, and measurement cycle times can be reduced. Hot Box enclosures will also support purging if required. In this way, Intertec can make hot boxes capable of providing certified hazardous area electric heating for
temperatures up to 150°C/300°F in small footprints, complete with doors for simple maintenance and operator access. These highly insulated GRP hot boxes can be designed to be completely weather resistant, allowing large savings to be made in the installation and ownership costs of process analyzers. Another major possibility of Intertec’s GRP-based hot boxes is
shape optimization. The construction techniques used for GRP make it simple to create special shapes further simplifying online analyzer and sampling applications located close to the process.

Spherical parts in shortest possible cycle times Thielenhaus Microfinish has developed an innovative machine solution SpheroStar, which has the capability to machine spherical workpieces in short cycle times with great precision

ased on the high-precision Sphero machine tool, Thielenhaus Microfinish has now developed a highly efficient two-step solution which performs the entire fine-finishing process for spherical workpieces in short cycle times. The new SpheroStar also builds upon the MicroStar and NanoStar platforms construc-tively and like these two it is equipped with an indexing table. The SpheroStar has two tool spindle units that can automatically rotate by up to 90 degrees so that the optimal machining position for the relevant process is always selected, thus enabling the production of flat surfaces as well – with optional cross slides – instead of only spherical surfaces. The units are mounted vertically and are easily accessible for fast changeover. The ma-chine is loaded at the first station by a handling robot in a cycle-time-neutral manner and is later again unloaded after machining. The indexing table then moves to station 2 where the workpiece is aligned axially. Pre-finishing takes place in-process in 114 ENGINEERING REVIEW

In just a few installation steps the machine can be converted from outer machining to inner machining, i.e. from a sphere to a sealing ring or a socket. Since the workpiece remains in the clamp until it is completely finished, the operator in-fluence is reduced and errors due to repeated clamping are ruled out. This in-creases process repeatability considerably. Workpieces can be machined up to a diameter of 75 mm on the ergonomical-ly designed machine. It is typically used in the automotive industry for machin-ing the joint heads of wheel suspension and steering components that require a high level of freedom and movement for the associated assembly units.

urrent trends in smart fabrics and protective textiles are expected to auger well for the global market for industrial protective clothing fabrics. Innovations in the textile clothing for industrial protection for workers are the key factors significantly pushing the growth of the global industrial protective clothing fabrics market. In addition, with increasing number of manufacturing units coupled with noteworthy employment rates, it becomes imperative for companies to develop efficient protective clothing fabrics for workers. This is expected to drive the demand for industrial protective clothing fabrics during the period of assessment. This report reveals that the global market for this product is anticipated to expand at a high rate. The global market for industrial protective clothing fabrics is expected to grow at a volume CAGR of 7.8% throughout the period of assessment, 2017-2026. During this timeline, the sale of industrial protective clothing fabrics market is estimated to surpass US$ 4 Bn by end of the year of assessment (2026). The key participants profiled in this extensive research report include PBI Performance Products, Inc., Koninklijke Ten Cate NV (TenCate), Gunei Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., and Mount Vernon Mills, Inc., to name a few. Key Insights on Global Industrial Protective Clothing Fabrics Market The demand for industrial protective clothing in Asia Pacific excluding Japan (APEJ) region

is expected to increase in the coming years. The APEJ region is expected to present potential growth opportunities for manufacturers involved in the production of industrial protective clothing fabrics during the assessment period. The main factor driving this growth is the growing employment statistics in emerging economies in APEJ, such as India and China. Both these countries have a large population pool, which has driven the employment scenario in these countries. In addition, both these emerging economies are considered as manufacturing hubs in the world owing to favorable business environment such as easy availability of cheap labor, growing presence of end use industries, cheap land availability and favorable government regulations regarding FDI policies. For example, in India, government has allowed a 100 percent FDI in various sectors including construction and aviation, which is expected to attract high foreign investments in the country, consequently boosting economic growth. This coupled with increasing awareness regarding worker safety is expected to boost the demand for industrial protective clothing fabrics in Asia Pacific excluding Japan region during the period of assessment. With respect to material type, the demand for polyolefin and blends is comparatively higher than other types. Polyolefin and blends offer a high resistance against heat and chemicals. Moreover, the demand for polyolefin and blends
for manufacturing of industrial protective clothing fabrics is higher owing to enhanced resistance against toxic chemicals and gases. Also, they are not affected by solvents and swell by chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons at higher temperatures, which adds to their demand. Further, industrial protective clothing fabrics are expected to witness high adoption from the oil and gas industries. The sale of industrial protective clothing fabrics is higher in this industry as the rate of worker mishaps and injuries have been on a larger scale. This has triggered the use of industrial protective clothing fabrics in this sector. With respect to thickness type, the demand for fabrics that are up to 0.056 inches thick is higher. However, industrial protective clothing fabrics with this thickness type, albeit gaining high steam, reflect low market share in the global industrial protective clothing fabrics market. On the other hand, with respect to weight, the 12 to 17 oz. per sq. yard segment is estimated to be the largest with a high market valuation. This segment is expected to lead the global industrial protective clothing fabrics market during the period of forecast.

lobal engineering technologies company, Renishaw, worked with engine manufacturing company Cobra Aero, based in Michigan, USA, to optimize its design processes for aircraft and motorcycle engines. After working with Renishaw to develop new manufacturing processes, Cobra Aero invested in the AM 400 system to increase its additive manufacturing (AM) capabilities. To optimize the design of its engine cylinders, Cobra Aero worked with Renishaw to gain expertise in AM. The company visited a Renishaw Additive Manufacturing Solutions Centre, USA, and collaborated with Renishaw engineers to use AM to improve the design of a cylinder for an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). Using AM technology allowed Cobra Aero to design a lattice structure to increase airflow, it also allowed them to produce one solid, lightweight part. “Staying at the cutting edge of manufacturing is important to Cobra Aero,” explained Sean Hilbert, President of Cobra Aero. “Investing in AM allows us to develop tools and new products for high value, small volume applications, speed up the
manufacturing process and produce designs that would not be possible using conventional subtractive machining.” “We decided to redesign the cylinder because of its importance in an engine,” continued Hilbert. “Design
changes to this part of the engine must happen rapidly and it is also a high value part, which is why we have chosen to additively manufacture this component. Improving the performance of the cylinder will also improve the overall performance of the engine.” “By using metal additive manufacturing, Cobra Aero was able to design a part that was unique to the application,” explained Stephen Anderson, AM Business Development Manager at Renishaw Inc. “By using our laser powder bed fusion technology, Cobra Aero was able to produce a single part with complex lattice structures that performs better than conventional component manufacturing techniques.”

AIS, or Automatic Identification System, is used universally by the maritime industry to provide safety at sea and aids to navigation. Class B devices are intended to be used by non-SOLAS (Safety to Life at Sea) vessels, to provide identification and location data to vessels in the receiving area. Class B devices implement the CSTDMA, or Carrier Sense Time-Division-Multiple-Access modulation scheme, which involves ‘listening’ for an available time slot before transmitting. The AIS Class B CSTDMA protocol is complex, forming a major part of the device’s design and its ability to conform to the applicable EN/IEC standards. Most notably, all Class B transponders must meet the requirements of the IEC 62287-1 standard, which governs Spectrum Usage and Access to Emergency Services. The SCT7033 is IEC 62287-1 compatible and ITU-R M.1371-5 compliant, which covers the technical characteristics for an AIS system using TDMA in the VHF maritime mobile frequency band. By embedding the protocol stack alongside the processor, engineers have instant access to a fully com-

pliant platform for AIS Class B transponder development. Using the SCT7033 as the basis for new product development enables significantly easier design and certification processes. “The SCT7033 delivers a faster time to market, particularly for engineering teams with no previous experience of developing devices aimed at AIS,” commented David Brooke, Product Manager, CML Microcircuits. “As the protocol is provided with the device, embedded with the processor, engineers can focus on the system level features and adding their own differentiation, rather than developing a standard protocol.” CML is a leading supplier to the marine industry, having a wide product portfolio aimed at AIS and other forms of communication systems. The SCT7033 is fully supported by CML’s engineering team and by the complementary products CML offers, such as baseband processors, frequency synthesisers and VCOs. The SCT7033 features all necessary interfaces for system design, including a C-BUS interface, SPI port, USB and UART interfaces and LED driver, as well as GPIO. The SCT7033 is compatible with the CML DE70322TC AIS Class B Reference Design. A GUI is provided to enable production line configuration, such as parameter set-up and adjustment, the Mobile Maritime Service Indicator (MMSI) of other parameters specific to the device or its vessel. Pipes cut to order Cut to length in no time at all, with no shavings and hardly any burs: Kollmorgen Automation Suite injects some pace into metalworking
T
he quality of individually prepared pipe sections is measured in terms of precise lengths and edges with no shavings and hardly any burrs. These pipe sections are eventually used for mechanical engineering applications, particularly within the automotive industry. A specialist in this field is FZH Maschinenbau from Großkampenberg. The Vario pipe-cutting system is designed for thin-walled pipes and works in tandem with a motion control solution from Kollmorgen. To help design the drive and control technology, Eifel-based company sought assistance from the engineering experts at Quality Automation GmbH. The first element of the equipment used for precise cutting to length of pipes with different cross sections and made of different alloys is a drum magazine, which serves as a kind of buffer for blanks. Next, a servo- motor-driven handling system with tilting and linear axes automates the feeding of the cutting equipment. The focal point of the process of cutting pipes to length is the cutting

head, with the pipe to be cut placed in the middle of this by a linear axis with a gripper unit. A mark indicates where the three circular blades will make contact with the surface. This cutting mark is made by a laser unit, during the earlier handling process, in accordance with the requirements of the production job at hand. The mark is detected by an optical sensor, which FZH has integrated into the cutting head.
Automation from a single source For complex processes, the Eifel-based engineering firm collaborates closely with Quality Automation GmbH (QA) as part of a long-standing partnership. For the purposes of this project, the system partner of Kollmorgen, based in Stolberg near Aachen, was appointed to create and implement a total automation package for the equipment. “We were responsible for the electrical design, for CE documentation, for building the control cabinet, for software development and ultimately for commissioning the equipment too,” explains Friedhelm Steffens, a member of the management team at QA. The aim was also to automate the cutting head in such a way that subsequent operators would be able to use the equipment for various cross sections, wall thicknesses and materials when working with pipes. FZH clients are mainly from the automotive supply industry. “It is important to ensure flexibility so different types of orders, including small runs, can be produced economically,” stresses Friedhelm Steffens. QA combined two servo drives to

The socalled lever-type supporting disk moves three circular cutting blades, at a defined rotational speed, along the outer edge of the pipe to be cut. The cam disk axis then ensures the three blades are lowered towards the material with a precisely defined profile guide. This arrangement is coordinated and controlled by the AKD PDMM from Kollmorgen. The device combines freely programmable motion control with a servo inverter – all in a single unit. The AKD PDMM drives the lever-type supporting disk and also controls another Kollmorgen AKD servo controller via an EtherCAT communication arrangement. In terms of controlling the actual equipment, the AKD PDMM communicates in turn via Profinet with the Siemens control system (acting as the Profinet master).
Simple motion programming QA took care of all motion sequences and synchronization of the two drives with the help of the Kollmorgen Automation Suite (KAS). The development platform is integrated into the AKD PDMM. This means the servo amplifier has both high-perwww.engmag.in
CASE STUDY formance PLC and motion control functionality. Sequences are also quick and easy to program via the graphic programming environment known as Pipe Network. Also there are five standardized languages available which are associated with IEC 61131-3 for sequence control purposes as well as PLCopen motion control function modules (for motion control). Working with Pipe Network is one of the highlights of the Kollmorgen Automation suite. Pipe Network enables FZH to unravel the complex relationships within the cutting process and represent them on a modular basis. This makes it possible to set each partial motion as a separate entity and independently of the others. As a result of this modularity in terms of engineering, it is really easy to come up with the optimal cutting process for any pipe (especially as pipes come in different materials, wall thicknesses and diameters). During cutting, the lever-type supporting disk and cam disk are synchronized, with the blade making a circular movement around the pipe. A superimposed motion involving the cam disk (implemented via a motion task or electronic cams) lowers the blades into the material and cuts the pipe. With hard materials – particularly precious metals – a scaled electronic cam disk kicks in when the lowering motion is initiated. It ensures the blades speed up initially as they are lowered into the material. The speed then decreases and continues to do so – regardless of the thickness of the wall still to be cut. This precise form of motion control means that even duplex stainless steels can be cut with no shavings and hardly any burs. But coming back to Pipe Network, this clearly and precisely replicates machine architecture, including dependencies between the axes of an application, in a very short space www.engmag.in
Tilting axis for retrieving blanks from the drum magazine, driven by the Kollmorgen AKM servo motor. of time. It is almost like users can “draw” their machine, while programming it at the same time. The work could be likened to a sophisticated form of mechatronic drive programming, which engineering professionals with no specific programming knowledge would also be able to master.
Background: The otherwise very complex programming in Pipe Network is replaced by a graphic description with drag-anddrop function. Starting from a virtual master, all functions and relationships between components as well as all movements and settings can be de-
fined with graphic description blocks. In terms of the cutting head, this approach translates into a cam-controlled feed and opening motion for the cutter wheels. “From our point of view, this offers clear advantages compared with conventional cutting processes,” explains Friedhelm Steffens. First of all, the cutting blades approach the pipe at considerable speed – before slowing down, without actually stopping, as they cut through the pipe until they reach the end position. It then returns to its original position, but again at speed (with productivity in mind).
A broad range of production applications The core of the process is fixed, but the details are universally adaptable. This has allowed FZH and QA to develop an overall solution for cutting all commonly available materials. The Vario pipe-cutting system can process diameters of 4 to 120 mm with wall thicknesses of between 0.1 and 2.5 mm (1.5 mm for stainless steel). There is no need for coolants or lubricants either, which is another plus. “The process is a clean one,” points out Steffens. The flexibility of the motion control solution makes it possible to adjust the cutting head to new pipe cross sections or different materials, almost at the push of a button. Formulations can be selected from the control panel. Individual adjustments can also be made here – to things like feed speed.

X platform Many organizations face the challenge of making better use of machine and plant data for decisionmaking and analysis in MES and cloud solutions. Exor provides the complete independent X platform that makes it easy to bring together the OT and IT levels. The X platform, a complete infrastructure www.engmag.in
consisting of Corvina Cloud, hardware and a matching software suite is available across all levels. The offer includes a complete open platform for the IoT with all the necessary infrastructure. The risk of a bad investment is maximally reduced with this technology. The X platform enables the rapid
creation of complete IIoT applications. EXOR sees an important task not only to link the OT and the IT level with each other technically, but also to bring together the different mentalities of the corresponding contact persons. Access to the field or to the OT level has been very tedious up to now. With the X Platform the data from the field level can be easily picked up using EXOR hardware. The integrated Open VPN solution enables easy access to the machines and systems. An important building block is the “JMobile” visualization and connectivity software, which provides all the drivers needed to dock to all major controllers. This enables seamless integration of the entire OT level, which above all else, keeps the
engineering costs under control. EXOR sees an interesting market for the X platform in retrofit: with the remote tap of data, which can then be evaluated, older machines and plants can be made Industry 4.0 compliant. The hardware can also be flexibly assembled: The “eXware” edge gateways can be equipped with single-core, dual-core or quad-core processors, namely ARM Cortex A8 with 1 GHz or ARM Cortex A9 800 MHz. The gateways have two to three Ethernet interfaces and modular extensions, for example for modem, CAN, Profibus, KNX and IOs. Upwards, OPC UA and MQTT are supported. In addition to Ethercat, EthernetIP, Powerlink and Profinet TSN is also supported.

harmful or flammable, these products often damage or stain machinery and remove the lustre of paint finish. O-CLEAN3 is an ecofriendly, economical water-based alternative to harmful acids, kerosene or sawdust. It works by breaking the bonds of hydrogen and carbon molecules that form hydrocarbons or oils. As a result, oils and dirt that have accumulated since many months can be cleaned effortlessly and in less time. Using O-CLEAN3 is easy: it must be applied on the oily machinery, allowed to react for approximately 30 minutes, and then washed off with water or with wet cloth to achieve oil-free, clean surface. The residue, that is water and small portion of carbon, can be easily separated and disposed
off,as required. If disposed off in effluent treatment plant, the treatment time will be substantially reduced as compared with effluents of harmful chemicals. O-CLEAN3 is a safe, multipurpose cleaning liquid that can be used for effectively cleaning oily machinery, CNC/ VMC, chequered plates, plastic bins, epoxy floors and concrete floors. It is also used for degreasing machine parts and as a handwash for cleaning workmens’ oily hands.
