Coltraco launch the Permalevel Multiplex fire suppression cylinder monitoring system Permalevel Multiplex has been designed to monitor the contents of gaseous fire suppression systems on a continuous basis without the need for physical presence
P
ermalevel™ Single Point has been in service for 10 years for single point fixed 24/7 monitoring. This is designed for up to 5 individual fire suppression cylinder monitoring applications. Permalevel™ Multiplex, however, is designed as a fixed 24/7 system to monitor anything from 5 to 700 cylinder level points. It is a modular system and each module will cater for up to 16 level points. It has been designed to monitor the contents of fixed gaseous fire suppression systems on a 24/7 basis for FM200™, NOVEC™ 1230, CO2, Halon 1301, FE-13™, FE-25™, NAF S 125™, NAF S 227™, NAF-S-III™ and CEA-410. Its attraction will lie principally with customers who desire and recognise the added safety
value of 24/7 contents monitoring of their fire suppression system in high asset value/special hazard environments. The Permalevel™ Multiplex is the first system worldwide that is capable of monitoring the liquid level of critical fire suppression cylinder systems on a constant basis. The unit can be easily installed on new systems or retrofitted to existing systems, and can monitor up to 16 level points simultaneously. The system has a remote display showing the status of each cylinder, as well as the ability to link to remote local alarm or indication method. It can also remote link the status back to any Central Monitoring Station. The Permalevel Multiplex is designed to ensure that fire suppression systems are always fully operational and that no accidental discharge has occurred, which could affect the effectiveness of the overall fire protection system in the event that it is required for use. This allows a facility to have complete confidence that they are fully protected. The Permalevel Continue on page no.6

range itself was first created in 2003 when Coltraco Limited was commissioned to create a constant monitoring solution for a leading UK Nuclear facility. The company recently redeveloped the system for launch into production, with the creation of the Permalevel Single Point™, used for monitoring smaller systems, and the Permalevel Multiplex™, the high technology solution for larger systems.
Basic layout of the Permalevel™ Multiplex The Permalevel Multiplex is supplied in an industry standard 19-inch, 3Uhigh rack with a cabinet in which to install the rack. There are a number of dedicated modules within the system, including: POWER SUPPLY – The system is connected to a fixed power supply through a basic IEC connector and contains a universal converter, allowing it to operate on any voltage between 95V and 260V. This fixed power supply allows the unit to operate on a constant basis; back-up battery power is available as an option, which will keep the system running in the event of any power failure. COMMUNICATION BOARD – The Comms Board is the brain of the whole system, collating and transmitting the results received from each monitoring point, allowing the inspection of the results from each level point, contains the core controls and containing two of the alarm methods. MONITORING CARDS – The elements within the system that does the monitoring are the individual Cards. Each Permalevel Multiplex
6 | JANUARY 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
system can take up to 8 different cards, each able to monitor two different level points. These simply slot into the front panel and connect to the Comms Board and Power Supply. Each point is individually set up through its own controls and a local indication is given with the LEDs on each card. ALARM METHODS – There are then 3 main alarm methods designed to alert the facility in the event of accidental discharge. The Installer can select which of the below to use with the option for any combination of the below. This variety offers complete certainty any discharge will be instantly identified to ensure the Permaevel Multiplex is doing its job. SENSOR – Each monitoring point has its own dedicated sensor which connects to the particular cylinder it is monitoring. These are specially designed, low profile sensors, using Coltraco’s trusted sensor technology used over 20 years in our Portable Indication equipment. They contain a magnet for ease of application, space for adhesive to be used to attach the sensor to each cylinder and the capability for physical straps to add an additional method to ensure the sensors will not be accidentally removed.
Connection to computers Through the RS232/RS485 connector, the system can be controlled and inspected remotely. It interfaces with a basic Hyper-terminal Program or other Serial Console Program, and can also interface with MODBUS or other programs. The system also has the capability to interface with Telit Systems or other remote relay.

Rising levels of industrial investments are also expected to be favorable for fire suppression systems market. North America and Europe are expected to continue posting steady growth, driven by adoption of novel technologies and for addressing environmental concerns, as stated in a new report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. The need to comply with mandatory safety guidelines for residential and non-residential buildings, both existing and new, is a major contributor to the market’s growth in North America. In particular, demand is rising for fire suppression systems that not only comply with building codes but also ensure environmental integrity. Product differentiation and innovation are key strategies for survival in a market characterized by maturity and price sensitivity.
8 | JANUARY 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
Key players profiled in the report include 3S Inc, A & M Fire & Safety Equipment Inc, Adams Fire Protection Inc, American Fire Technologies, ANSUL Inc, Fire Control Systems Inc., General Fire Extinguisher Service Inc., Globe Technologies Corp., Heiser Logistics Inc., Haines City Fire Extinguisher Service Inc., Koorsen Fire & Security Inc., Peripheral Manufacturing Inc., PYRO-CHEM, Safety Systems Inc., T & S Fire and Security Inc., and Russellfire Limited, among others. Heavy industrialization and growing trade along with a booming manufacturing sector in Asia Pacific have contributed to large-scale expansions of industrial activities in the past decade. Traditionally active industrial regions of North America and a revival of manufacturing in Europe have also been contributing to market growth. This has resulted in a growing need for safety equipment in order to protect a global workforce. Moreover, stringent safety regulations by various organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, the European Commission and Japan Industrial Safety & Health Association (JISHA) has further boosted the market for protective clothing in recent times. A growing need for hygiene and contamination-free environment in the food and pharmaceutical industries has further boosted the market for
protective clothing. The global demand for chemicals has resulted in higher growth numbers of the chemical industry in the past few decades. As many chemicals are harmful to the human body, standard manufacturing procedures dictated the use of protective clothing for personnel safety in these industries. With a growing interest from various organizations and stringent implementation of safety standards, the demand for chemical defending garments has been analyzed to be the highest of all industrial protective clothing segments. Chemical defending garments thus accounted for over 35% of the market share in 2012 and this market is expected to grow with healthy growth numbers in the coming years. Due to the imminent threat of a breakout of fire in various industries and building safety standards, flame retardant apparel has also been a major segment in the recent past. This segment is expected to grow rapidly over the next few years due to continual expansion of industries and the need for fire-safety. The need for clean environments and negligible levels of contamination in food, pharmaceuticals, research laboratories and other such industries is expected to boost the market for clean room clothing over the next few years. Indian fire safety equipment market to reach $4.3 billion by 2017
T
he India fire safety equipment market is forecast to grow to a value of around $4.26 billion by the end of 2017. With rapid industrialization and escalating governmental regulations, the fire safety equipments market in India is poised for growth. Every year, India loses thousands of lives and assets valuing billions in accidents caused due to fire. Even though, the laws related to fire safety and risks have levied statutory norms, but there are no major penalties on violation of any such mandatory norm. Various fire safety audits have concluded that several establishments lack basic fire prevention measures, even in important sectors like healthcare. The same scenario holds true for the residential sector as well. This has resulted into the emergence of massive unorganized sector with the dominant market share when compared to the organized marketplace in the Indian fire safety equipments market. The demand for fire safety equipments is rising on the heels of economic growth of India, rapid industrialization, radically growing commercial sector & improvement in the overall real estate industry.
12 | JANUARY 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
The usage & application of fire safety equipments are continuously increasing with corporations and commercial entities laying additional emphasis on fire safety and security. Many state governments have now made it mandatory for proper installation and adequacy of fire safety installations, particularly in commercial establishments. With the intensification of competition as a result of entry of several small and unorganized players into the market, innovation and product differentiation are likely to play the key role for
the players. The fire protection market in India is highly fragmented and majorly dominated by unorganized players with regional presence. Most of these companies are either family owned or proprietary concerns. There are only a handful of players in the organized market with pan India presence in this industry which leaves huge growth opportunities for international companies to enter this market before it gets organized or crowded and capture the market share with quality products.
Fire incidents have risen multifold across the country in last 24 months, endangering the life and assets of many. The Fire Protection departments across the country are unable to fulfill the requirements to safeguard the life and the assets in India. NDMA has estimated the deficiency of the services in the country as under:Fire Stations - 97.54% Fire Fighting & Rescue Vehicles -80.04% Fire Personnel - 96.28% NDMA argued for allocation of grants worth Rs 70 billion to the states to meet these shortages The Finance Ministry should take active steps for implementation and effective execution of aforesaid recommendations & proposals. Considering the large and immediate need to restructure fire and emergency services across the urban and rural areas of the country, the stipulation in FCR is merely a first step. The Ministry should take active steps for implementation and effective execution of aforesaid recommendations and proposals. Also, the ministry may decide to set-up a quick action task force for immediate implementation.

British Safety Council welcomes report of the Triennial Review of the Health and Safety Executive The British Safety Council welcomed the publication today by the Department for Work and Pensions of the report on the Triennial Review of the Health and Safety Executive led by Martin Temple, Chair of the EEF. Having submitted evidence to the review, the British Safety Council, noted that Government had acknowledged the importance of the role played by HSE as the national, independent regulator and that its functions in preventing death, injury and ill health to those at work were still required and that its status as a non-Departmental Public Body should be retained.
I
n his report Temple set out a series of recommendations in a number of areas which he considered would assist HSE in delivering its functions with greater efficiency and effectiveness concerning funding and income, delivery, commercial options and its relationships with other regulators. Alex Botha, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, responding to the report said: “The British Safety Council believes that in order for Great Britain to continue to be effective in preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill-health we need a properly resourced, expert and independent regulator. We welcome the Government’s acknowledgement of the continuing need for HSE to help to achieve that goal. That view was overwhelmingly supported by our more than 6,000 corporate members. “We note that Temple highlighted concerns over the recently introduced cost recovery scheme, ‘Fee for Intervention’ (FFI). Many of these concerns reflect the views of our members we submitted to the review so we welcome the recommendations concerning the planned review of FFI to be expanded to examine these issues. “In his report Temple acknowledges that HSE’s funding from Government has fallen
14 | JANUARY 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
significantly over the last ten years and that it is likely to continue reducing. We fully endorse the government and Temple’s view that HSE must embrace innovation and efficiency to make the most of the money it receives. However, we must be realistic about what more HSE can realistically do with its finite resources. “In principle we support the overall approach that the Temple report recommended concerning the potential for HSE to become more commercial in outlook and delivery. However there are dangers in over-commercialising HSE’s functions and increased public service involvement in a market which is already well provided for. We recognise that some 40% of HSE’s current expenditure is already covered by the income it generates. “On governance we believe that the tripartite structure of HSE Board has helped contribute to its credibility & effectiveness over the last 40 years. Though particular skills and experience need to be better reflected in the composition of the HSE Board, particularly as it further develops its commercial activity, it is vitally important that the views of those undertaking work activities, both employers and employees, are properly represented. “The British Safety Council in
its evidence to the Temple review expressed its concerns about a reduction in resources that many Local Authorities were devoting to the regulation of workplace health and safety. While the review made clear the important role played by HSE in actively reviewing the regulatory performance of Local Authorities we had hoped to see a more detailed consideration of bringing together the regulation and enforcement of workplace health under one roof. “While the review has been completed and the report presented as Temple sets out there are a number of very important areas that need further more detailed examination, for example FFI and the development of more robust metrics to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of HSE. The British Safety Council looks forward, working with its member organisations, to playing its part in the considerable amount of work that needs to be done in taking the Temple review recommendations forward.”

New Year’s honours recognise health & safety champions
A The Chief Executive and Trustees of the British Safety Council congratulate all of the recipients of awards appearing in the New Year Honours list announced last week. In particular the British Safety Council welcomed the recognition of those individuals who have made a significant contribution to keeping people healthy and safe at work.
16 | JANUARY 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
lex Botha, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, in welcoming the awards said: “The 2014 New Year Honours recognise those many hundreds of people from all walks of life who have helped make a difference. The individuals upon whom awards have been bestowed have all made a contribution to improving a particular aspect of our lives. It is important that society recognises and celebrates their respective contributions. “The British Safety Council is particularly pleased that individuals who have helped keep people healthy and safe in the workplace are recognised in the New Year Honours. While health and safety has, unfairly, attracted unjust criticism in recent years we must not forget that the sensible and proportionate management of workplaces helps keep us healthy and safe. Many people are alive and healthy today thanks to the contribution of Honours recipients and thousands of others who together play an important part in preventing injury and ill health in the workplace. “We would like particularly to congratulate Graham Jukes, the Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and Pam Waldron, formerly HSE’s Head of Operations in Yorkshire & Humberside on their OBE awards. Congratulations too to Louise
Brearey, Head of the London 2012 Games Team at HSE and to Christopher Seddon, Director of our member organisation the Seddon Group Ltd on their awards of the MBE for their services to health and safety and young people. “We are pleased too to recognise the contribution of Geoff Hooke, formerly Chief Executive of the British Safety Industry Federation and Paul Webster of HSE who were both awarded the British Empire Medal.

Jefferson County Waterway monitors vessel traffic with Milestone video surveillance Vital artery for US oil imports gains central, remote and mobile control
M
ilestone Systems open platform IP video management software (VMS) is at the center of operational overview for the authorities who handle the Sabine-Neches Waterway running 55 miles through Jefferson County, Texas, to the Gulf of Mexico. This area includes the number-one commercial and military out-load port in the United States and is the fourth largest port in terms of processed tonnage. They need to ensure the safety of those working and traveling through the port, and to keep traffic flowing for the commerce that relies on clear passage. A vast traffic-monitoring network has been deployed here to ensure that all vessels (civilian, military and commercial) can safely navigate the waters with minimal interference such as collisions or other stoppage. The new surveillance system also monitors the many petroleum refineries that line the channel. Backed by a Verizon Wireless 4G connection, the county cameras along the waterway are networked through Milestone XProtect® Enterprise VMS for managing high definition video of live vessel movements and incident reporting from the archived footage. “Milestone truly is the best IP

video open platform on the market. It integrates with all of the cameras seamlessly and provides the sheriff’s department with more high definition images for significantly better views of the waterway than their previous sys tem. We now have camera ‘eyes’ located on an array of tall locations in challenging environments. Our solution design includes live mobile video on tablets and smartphones to dispatchers and personnel on watercraft,” says Mark Nolan, Sales Engineer at systems integrator Knight Security Systems. Vessels range in size from small tugboats to huge tanker ships hauling hundreds of tons of oil and other commodities. When an incident is called in to port security, authorities must assess the situation and respond immediately. Milestone XProtect provides the user interface where reported incidents are checked in the video to determine if the port must close to resolve a situation or can continue operating. Closing the port for any amount of time is an expensive procedure, so having virtual eyes on the scene is imperative to optimal operations. The previously installed system was very limited - only viewable
and navigable in one control station building. Knight Security Systems therefore designed and installed a Milestone XProtect Enterprise IP video surveillance solution managing AXIS Q1604 and Sony SNCER550 cameras, and more than eight terabytes of storage to provide 24 hours of archiving. With the Milestone Mobile client, the sheriff’s department and port authorities now have instant access to video from anywhere. The Milestone solution consolidates the 24-hour monitored cameras into one centrally managed solution, viewable by all administrators in their respective offices, in the main monitoring station and on mobile devices. With high-level national security implications, live camera views and the ability to quickly check recorded video is essential to the port’s operational standards for efficiency. Every second between an incident report and confirmation of the validity of the report is crucial to the response process.

the Intracoastal Waterway. With an advanced communications system and screening process, no vessel is unaccounted for. The cameras give verification to confirm radio transmissions. The Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) at Port Arthur acts as the “keepers of the gate” aided by the Milestone video management solution, issuing advisories and minimizing blind spots. “If we pick up a radar blip that’s not transmitting an identification signal, it is imperative to identify that blip before it enters the port,” explains Michael Measells, Director of Vessel Traffic Service. “The cameras can do what radar can’t achieve - put an eye on a vessel through the Milestone XProtect software, allowing us to know what’s moving, from a marine safety and security standpoint. That’s the number-one mission.” Cameras line the river and port entrance, placed in strategic locations from the roofs of buildings to the top of the Verizon Wireless 4G towers. A Jefferson County Sheriff helicopter also hosts a mounted camera ready to be called into action at any time, whether it’s monitoring an incident or making rounds. “We’ve adapted to the ease of application, connectivity and versatility of the Milestone interface very quickly – it’s so easy to use,” says John Moore, Electronics Materials Officer, United States Coast Guard. “Milestone is always up and running, and it loads extremely fast on any mobile operating system. The versatility of our Milestone setup also allows us to remotely provide access to our Sector Command Center in Houston.”
incident is reported to the Sheriff’s Department or Coast Guard, there are established procedures to follow before any response is made. Any event, whether a boating accident, cargo spill or personal injury, has the potential to shut down the channel for an extended length of time. “This is a high-traffic waterway and with a limited width, there are bound to be close calls and incidents,” says Measells. “It’s good to have more eyes on each vessel.” When an incident is reported, officials must immediately confirm the report. Then the proper authorities are contacted and ground or water personnel deployed as needed. The sheriff’s department jurisdiction covers the entire 55 miles of critical infrastructure. “If I get a report of an incident, I’ll pull Milestone Mobile up on my tablet or phone to assess the situation,” says Deputy Chief Mark Dubois, Jefferson County Sheriff. “XProtect helps us respond quickly, allowing us to view video from any cameras immediately, from any location, any time, to confirm or deny an event.” “We can move from evaluation of a report to initiating a response in a matter of minutes, if not seconds,” Moore adds. “There’s time and money there. Once we confirm, all responders’ mindsets are immediately shifted into response.”

Sony launches ruggedised X Series IP surveillance cameras for transportation vehicles & SNC-VB635 model for outdoor monitoring The new cameras harness the power of IPELA ENGINE EX™ to produce sharp images with minimal noise even under severe lighting conditions
S
ony recently announced four new IP cameras which feature the company’s IPELA ENGINE EX™ integrated signal processing system. The line-up from Sony includes three new X Series cameras (SNC-XM632, SNC-XM636, SNC-XM637) and the SNC-VB635 full HD IP camera with a half-inch CMOS sensor. The latest cameras produce clear, sharp HD images with minimised noise even under severe lighting conditions. They achieve this by harnessing the power of the IPELA ENGINE EX™ technology platform, through ViewDR wide-dynamic range technology, XDNR noise reduction technology, and frame rates ranging from 30 frames a second up to 60 frames a second in full HD. The addition of these new cameras strengthens Sony’s offering for outdoor and transportation
applications, such as in-vehicle surveillance or environments with exceptionally low light conditions. “Security scenarios in transportation are becoming more complex than ever, and conventional IP-based surveillance may not be sufficiently equipped to handle rapidly-moving subjects or facial recognition in low light environments,” said Mr. Riki Nishimura, General Manager of Visual Security Solutions Division, Professional Solutions Company (PSAP) at Sony Electronics Asia Pacific. “We’ve designed our X Series cameras with a much better wide dynamic range capability that is adaptable to varying light conditions, for instance in viewing subjects within a vehicle carriage against strong outdoor lighting, or when travelling in and out of a tunnel. The X Series cameras also offer a much wider viewing angle with different fixed lens options to suit different installation positions, such as for a narrower view inside a vehicle, or a wider view for monitoring the reverse view of a vehicle. These cameras are ideal solutions for public transport operators looking to outfit their buses, coaches or trains to ensure clear and detailed surveillance.”

electronic pan/tilt/zoom (ePTZ) and 11 different viewing modes through the Sony Web viewer. “Due to evolving security needs, users now expect an IP camera to provide usable video for multiple applications,” said Mr. Riki Nishimura, General Manager of Visual Security Solutions Division, Professional Solutions Company (PSAP) at Sony Electronics Asia Pacific. “Sony has designed the SNC-HM662 with that very purpose in mind. Q. Can you elaborate more about the products portfolio and its applications? You name it, we have it!!! Karam is the only company in the world that not only manufactures, but also indulges into training on the usage of our life saving equipment. Our expertize lies in fall protection with which we provide a complete range of personal protection, be it
Value of human life is a major concern in our industry. Though in the nascent stage, occupational safety & health still has a long way to go. It is treated as an unnecessary expenditure, which results in underrated value of human life, forcing safety measures a backseat. Training and proper usage of Personal Protection Equipment is yet another area of concern which should not be ignored. The real challenge lies in how appropriately the gear is worn and used. A must say‌if the equipment is used in a rightful manner, this life guarding mechanism can complement growth by increasing the productivity and confidence of the personnel working in a hazardous condition.

Another important issue is of duplicity. The market is flooded with cheap and low quality products and the people who are buying them are not aware about the ill-effects of these products. Again creating awareness & imparting knowledge is the only solution to make them realize that not only using a safety device can safeguard their life but using the right device in the correct way will do the wonders.
Q. How do you account R&D activity in your company? In an industry that is changing fast, one must continually revive their design and range of products. This is necessary due to the continuous change and development of technology as well as other competitors and the changing preferences of our customers. Karam is an innovation driven organization. We have an extensive R&D set up and state of the art machinery with a highly trained team of professionals responsible for nurturing the innovativeness in our products, design and style.
Q. Brief us about the quality policy for your business? Quality at Karam is not a destination but a journey which all of us cover unanimously. Be it any phase, from raw materials to manufacturing, to quality control, to logistics and later customer care or we may say caring for the customers, we have benchmarked a level of excellence in all phases. For us at Karam, quality is enhancing our own standards with each passing moment.
Q. How do you foresee India as a potential market, what are the prospects? The safety industry has been pretty stable during the last 2 years with a growth of approximately 20%
www.ind-safety.com
annually and the future looks bright with more and more corporates feeling the need to adapt to safety measures and approaching safety equipment manufacturers for their respective needs. The industry is likely to record growth from across all verticals in India, attributable to the growing demand for safety solutions. This category is expected to accelerate at a steady rate of 20% year on year and we look forward for securing various sectors from safety lethal circumstances.
Q. According to you what are the factors affecting to your business? For Karam and me personally what affect our business is the lack of awareness and the underrated value of life of the working personnel. Though with time corporates have started acknowledging the use of Personal Protection Equipment but still there is a long way to go. With more inclination to the use of these life savers we can provide a safe working place to not only the person at the worksite but also to the families who are connected and dependent on them. To add to this, the market is full of duplicate & cheap quality safety equipment. One should stay alarmed and be sure of what he is buying because using a low grade device is equal to not using it.
Q. Could you brief us about overall business activities of your company (tie-ups, associations, reach, network)? We have an unimaginable strong network of dealers and distributors who contribute a major portion of our business across the country. We don’t believe in tie-ups because maintaining quality is an issue. We have set an extra ordinary
benchmark of quality which cannot be compromised anyhow.
Q. Which are some of your pioneering products you introduced in the market recently or are there any plans to launch a new product? As I stated earlier also, KARAM is an innovation driven organization. We have launched someworld class products such as Retractable Blocks, Rescue Equipment, Evacuation Aid (both Ascending and Descending). Another new domain that we have entered recently is Fixed Line Systems. In the near future we are coming up with new models of helmets, wielding shields, face shields & the list is endless, because we believe in self-improvisation and keep on updating ourselves and our products.
Q. What are the key technological factors affecting your business? Getting superior quality machines is an issue in India which is being resolved but it will take time. Most of our machines are imported which adds to the cost of the product and also on time. The raw material we use is of supreme quality which is difficult to find in India. Again we have to depend on import for it. Quality is our priority therefore we use the best to deliver the best!!!
Q. What is your Vision for Karam? Karam has always been known for its quality. It is the market leader in safety equipment and my Vision will always be to maintain it. Providing the best quality at a competitive price to bring it in reach for all‌

are
you
We target SME/SMB, Corporate, Hospitals, Universities & many more.
Q. What is the advantage of Matrix products vis-à-vis the competition? Matrix is SUBSTANCE brand. Substance is in the DNA of Matrix solutions. Substance in the form of technology, depth, genuineness and going beyond the mere outer façade and offer more values in all the areas. This is what differentiates Matrix from the lot. Matrix solutions are packed with More. More productivity, more applications,

more flexibility, more functions, more features, more cost saving, more reliability, and more support. Matrix positioning is based on offering more of these true inherent values which customers expect from infrastructure solutions.
Q. What is your marketing and channel strategy? We are trying to position ourselves and Matrix products as most relevant solution to customers. We understand customer requirement thoroughly and accordingly frame the solution using various permutation, combination of Matrix products. We are trying to offer complete solutions to our clients. We are positioning Matrix products as most reliable products and our company as most trustworthy company. Our channel strategy is to approach more and more technically sound System Integrators and facilitate them to confidently pitch, sell, install and maintain Matrix products. We are also targeting companies which are into IT business and in the business of structured cabling.
We support our channel partners & our customers fully in all the fronts. We extend technical and service support to our clients through our highly qualified and technically sound service engineers. We attend the service call from our client the same day and in most of the cases within 4 hours from the time thecomplaint has been registered. Our professional installation helps us to serve our customers better and so we receive very less complaints. We support our channel partners commercially and technically. We provide regular technical and sales training to our channel partners. We help them in closing the case by accompanying them in sales & technical discussions with clients.
Q. What are the challenges that you are currently facing in India? It is difficult to convince buyer on new technology products; as many suppliers/vendors are still pushing products with obsolete technology. Sometime back-end infrastructure is not of that kind which supports new technological products. It is difficult to pitch IP Camera in most of the SME/SMB due to bandwidth issues. Most of the companies prefer to go with cheaper and better products; this is the most difficult combination to offer.
Q. How much of growth are you expecting this year and are you also expecting any business from the overseas market? Currently we are only focusing on Vadodara & nearby territories. We are a new start up so our target is to double the turnover at least year on year.

Fire Safety Management “An effective fire safety management within a building is a must for mitigating a fire”
- R. R. Nair 1.0 Introduction
About Author
Mr. R. R. Nair has more than 45 years’ experience in Occupational Safety, Health & Fire Protection. He is author of 15 books and about 65 articles in various topics on Safety, Health & Environment. He has carried out more than 50 safety / fire safety audits in various industries, occupancies including high rise buildings. For more information contact: M: 09224212544 Resi: 022 27665975 E-mail: shib@vsnl.com
A fire can happen at any time in a building or premises irrespective of its occupancy status and size. Managing fire safety in a building especially in a high rise building, is much more difficult as the problems of these buildings are more complex. Thus an effective fire safety management within a building is a must for mitigating a fire. An effective fire safety management can be made only when we have a fire safety strategy. This article will deal with developing a fire safety strategy in a building. A fire safety strategy for a building can be made up of the following essential elements.
• Fire Lifts • Fire Stops / Fire Resisting Doors • Fire Tower • LPG/PNG pipelines • Travel Distance • Escape routes and exits • Refuge Area • Refuse Chutes
3.0 Active Fire Safety Measures Active fire safety measures are the system which activate in the event of an outbreak of fire which are provided by a developer, owner or occupier. The system would include: • Emergency lighting
1. Passive Fire Safety Measures 2. Active Fire Safety Measures 3. Fire Control Measures
• Firefighting Water Tanks • Fire Extinguishers • Hose Reels • Landing Valves
In order to function the building safely, each of these elements must be adequately provided.
2.0 Passive Fire Safety Measures Passive fire safety measures are features which are built into the structure of the building and are physical features of the building provided by a developer, owner or occupier. These features include provision of: • Fire resistance to the building structures • Access to and around the building • Mechanical Smoke Extractors • Automatic Fire Dampers

• Fire Staircases
• Dry /Wet Risers • Down Comers • Courtyard Hydrants • Firefighting Pumps – Electrical/ Diesel/Jockey/Sprinkler/Booster • Fire detection Systems • Fire Alarm System • Fire Sprinklers • Fire Suppression Systems Fire safety management within a building must include a full appraisal of active and passive fire protection measures within the building. All deficiencies in the fire protection measures should be noted and a management of remedial Continue on page no.74

works to upgrade the building to an acceptable standards should be put in place.
4.0 Fire Control Measures Fire Control Measures relate to the day to day management of fire safety in a building. There is a legal responsibility on occupier or persons having control over building or premises to take reasonable measures to prevent the occurrence of a fire and to protect the lives and property of occupants in the event of fire. The passive and active fire safety measures outlined above could be completely negated unless the building occupants are aware of the significance of the measures and the action need to be taken in the event of fire. A fire safety programme must be established in a building in order to correctly manage fire safety and meet all legal obligations. A person should be designated as a Fire Safety Officer
with responsibility for drawing up, implementing and overseeing the fire safety programme. The Fire Safety Officer should also be of adequate status and should have authority to effectively discharge his responsibility. However, if the building does not have adequate active and passive fire safety measures, more stringent fire controls measures will be required. The elements of Fire Measures may include :
Control
1. 2. 3. 4.
Emergency procedures Plan Fire Evacuation drills Regular fire safety inspection Maintenance and servicing of fire equipment 5. Staff training 6. Information to occupants 7. Keeping of records
4.1 Emergency Procedures Plan An emergency procedures plan should be prepared outlining the
procedures to be followed during an emergency. The plan should be prepared by keeping in mind that all occupants must be capable of responding correctly in the event of fire. This predetermined plan can be broken down into a number of sections such as: • Procedures for raising the alarm • Procedures for calling the fire brigade • Procedures for Evacuation • Procedures for Assembly Point and Roll Call • Procedures for fighting the fire • Procedures for assisting the fire brigade 4.1.1 Procedures for Raising the Alarm: There are various types of fire alarm system. Depending upon the size and nature of the building / occupancy, the fire alarm system may be very simple or very sophisticated. It should be born in mind that all occupants should be aware of how to raise the alarm. All occupants/ employees should be aware of how to raise the alarm. The source of alarm must be monitored regularly. Whole premises should be warned through the Public Address System in such a manner that should not generate any panic amongst the occupants. The system should be incorporated to disseminate the information to other emergency support services. Pre-determined area should be identified for refuge or assemble of the occupants. The assembly or refuge area must have the access of the emergency vehicles like ambulance or fire service vehicles. Roll call should be taken to ensure that all Continue on page no.76

occupants/ patients are evacuated from the danger zone and the missing person should be notified to the Fire Service and Police Authority. 4.1.2 Procedures for calling the Fire Brigade: The Fire Brigade should be called immediately in the event of a fire. In the commercial buildings where there is a receptionist or telephone operator he/she is usually given the responsibility of contacting the Fire Brigade. In residential buildings, generally a Manager or Fire Officer or any authorised person of the society does these duties. It may be added here that while calling the Fire Brigade, one should give clear information such as, name of the building, directions to reach the building, type of occupancy, and if possible also the information such as, location of fire, size of fire, materials involved in the fire, persons missing, nearest water body available, telephone number of the caller, etc… 4.1.3 Procedures for Evacuation: It is an important element and requires meticulous planning. Once the fire alarm has been sounded, initiate the evacuation procedure. The evacuation procedure will depend on the building use or type of occupancy. e.g. the evacuation procedure for a residential building will be different from the procedure for hospital building or a manufacturing unit or a commercial building. The evacuation strategy can be decided based on the circumstances and size of the fire/emergency.
76 | JANUARY 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
They can be chosen from the types of evacuation systems such as (i) Phased, (ii) Progressive, (iii) Total Building, (iv) Partial, (v) Self, (vi) Stay-in-place or combination of any one or more. 4.1.4 Procedures for Assembly Point and Roll Call: Every premises whether it is a high rise residential building or a commercial building or a manufacturing unit, should designate an assembly area or areas of the buildings. The assembly area should have
a clear of access points for the Fire Brigade. In the event of a fire or emergency, all building occupants should proceed to the assembly area. At the assembly point, a roll call should be taken to ensure all occupants are accounted. Missing persons should be notified to the Fire Brigade when they arrive at the scene. 4.1.5 Procedures for Fighting the Fire: It must be kept in mind that in the early stages of a fire, it may be possible to successfully contain the fire or extinguish it with first aid firefighting
equipment such as fire extinguishers. However, to accomplish this, the occupants or staff members should be instructed in the use of hand held extinguishers and hose reels. In this connection certain members of the occupants or staff may be designated as a firefighting team, as part of the emergency procedures. Their functions would be to assess and “if safe to do so”, tackle the fire with the available equipment, until the Fire Brigade arrive. 4.1.6 Procedures for Assisting the Fire Brigade: When the Fire Brigade arrives, they need to be given as much as information as possible, in order to take the best course of action. The type of information required includes: location of the fire, materials involved, details of missing persons, location of nearest fire hydrants, location of all access doors to the building. The Fire Brigade should also be provided with the keys for any locked areas.
4.2 Fire Evacuation Drills The aims of an evacuation drills are: • To ensure safe, orderly and efficient evacuation of all occupants of the building to use all exit facilities available in order that occupants are familiar with them • To test all aspects of the emergency procedures • To achieve and change the attitude of many that reacts irrationally when confronted with a fire or Continue on page no.78

other emergency situation Fire evacuation drills should be carried out at regular intervals to test the effectiveness of the predetermined arrangements.
4.3 Regular fire safety inspection Fire safety inspections are a check of all fire safety procedures, installations and records within a building structures to determine compliance with appropriate legislation and regulation. A fire safety inspection helps to ensure that the owners and occupiers of buildings are meeting their responsibilities under the legislation, that buildings are fitted with correct fire safety installations required by the fire safety standard, and that these fire safety installations are maintained in an operational condition. The fire safety inspection will involve an inspection of the building’s fire safety installations and an inspection of the maintenance records for each of the fire safety installations in the building. It is a visual check of fire safety in a building using a standard fire safety inspection checklist of legislative requirements. They are generally carried out by the qualified officers of the local fire brigade or an agency authorized by the local fire brigade or fire safety consultants.
4.4 Maintenance and servicing of fire equipment Management and maintenance of fire safety provisions are important as it is necessary to assure that the fire safety provisions installed in a building can operate effectively for the intended life of the building. Effective fire safety management can reduce potential fire danger, assist
78 | JANUARY 2014 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
occupants to reach the ultimate place of safety in case of fire and regular maintenance will ensure all fire safety provisions in the building can be kept in good workable conditions. Maintenance & management of fire safety provisions should be carried out through the following means: i) Passive fire safety provisions at common parts should be inspected and repaired under the Building Regulations. ii) Active Fire Safety provisions should be inspected, tested and maintained by the “Licenced Agencies” or competent contractors or agencies. iii) Ventilating Systems should be inspected by the “Licenced Agencies” or specialist contractors on ventilating systems. iv) Competent persons, e.g. authorised persons, should be commissioned by the occupants or building owners to carry out inspection, maintenance and certification of fire safety provisions. v) Checklist on housekeeping should be provided to guide the carrying out of routine maintenance works on passive fire safety provisions and the certification of any irregularities identified. Such guidelines would enhance the owner’s awareness on fire safety and are effective means on fire safety management for buildings.
4.5 Staff training Staff training is an important element in fire safety management in particular high rise residential and commercial buildings. The security staffs, members of the fire Team
other employees and staffs, who are connected with routine maintenance of firefighting installations and emergency evacuation plan need to be trained in the fire emergency procedures described in their approved fire safety and evacuation plans. These groups shall be apprised of the fire hazards of the materials and processes to which the employees and occupants are exposed. Each employee shall be instructed in the proper procedures for preventing fires in the conduct of their assigned duties. They shall be familiarized with the fire alarms, evacuation signals, their assigned duties in the event of an alarm or emergency, evacuation routes, areas of refuge, exterior assembly areas, and procedures for evacuation. They shall also be trained to know the locations and proper use of portable fire extinguishers or other manual fire-fighting equipment and the personal protective equipment required for its safe and proper use.
4.6 Information to occupants The information to occupants is also an important element in fire safety management. The management should prepare an information sheet containing various actions required to be taken by the occupants in the event of a fire or an emergency. The information sheet should contain the features relating to: • What they should know about the occupants safety. • To whom they should report if the occupants finds any blocked exits, faulty call points, etc. • What and how they should act if the occupants discover a fire. • What and how they should act if Continue on page no.80

Going green with hand protection gloves
What is the definition of “going green” when it comes to protecting hands? For instance, what becomes of the gloves when a shift is over? Some styles are launder-able, enabling the user to reuse their gloves multiple times before the need arises to switch them out for a new pair. Other styles, such as disposable nitrile, by design do not have this luxury and are tossed into the trash after use – sometimes expending five to ten pair a day depending on the industry. Industrial applications annually expend a massive amount of disposable waste, filling landfills with gloves and many other waste materials difficult to impossible to breakdown. In total, the U.S. solid waste industry managed approximately 545 million tons of waste in 1999. Of the total, about 374 million tons, or 68 percent, was landfilled; 31 million tons, or five

percent, was incinerated; and 140 million tons, or 27 percent, was recycled.* R&D teams in some of the most influential global hand protection companies are looking to break this trend with the advent of materials that will make an impact on our global hand print. Just a few of these discussion points include:
Using sustainable materials This is key and gaining popularity, yet there are only a few products that can currently make this claim within the hand protection industry today. Biodegradation is the chemical dissolution of materials by bacteria or other biological means. The key is to produce biodegradable gloves without a loss in protection and performance. When it comes to disposables, the leading trend is biodegradation. The issue is that typical materials such as nitrile

Groundbreaking products and programs do exist within this niche of the hand protection marketplace, and one such example is biodegradable disposable nitrile gloves. This product is composed of organic materials designed to make the gloves more attractive to microbial activity. As microorganisms consume the material they excrete enzymes that depolymerize the nitrile, leaving biogases and inert humus in their wake. Organic Material: Another popular sustainable product is the use of bamboo fiber within the gloves shell. More than a decade old, turning bamboo into fiber offers sustainable value, since these gloves are made of “environmentallyfriendly” materials. Unlike synthetic fibers, bamboo is not petroleum-based, which is becoming more important in a world of high oil prices and dwindling reserves. Recycled Materials: Post consumer recyclate (PCR), for example, is derived from recycled soda and water bottles and is gaining popularity as a valuable raw material. Reusing plastic takes less energy, uses fewer natural resources, and helps reduce landfills. Demand is also increasing for fibers such as biopolymers based on starch, cellulose and polylactic acid (PLA), which are used in disposable products.
a fundamental first step in the supply chain could potentially be the materials used in the packaging of hand protection products. Using 100% post-consumer waste and dispensers from 100% recycled material is one such way to improve this trend, which reduces packaging waste tremendously.
Extended-life products One should use gloves for as long as they are effective – which in most cases is quite a bit longer than users anticipate. Be aware of what is and what is not launder-able. Enabling this practice within a company’s
True sustainability
PPE plan is one step to minimize the quantity of gloves that end up in landfills prematurely. For example, many {supported} glove styles can be laundered, which means they can be washed or dry cleaned and then re-used for added value and sustainability. Mechanical and/or chemical resistant properties typically remain after three washes but this depends on the degree of wear to the glove, which must be checked.
Building a conservation culture Recycled packaging Aside from the gloves themselves,

starts with long-term sustainability planning, building a conservation culture and tracking these longterm goals. There is a need to focus on pollution prevention, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and designing products and packaging to be environmentally friendly. Gradual, minor changes across the supply chain can make prolific strides to reach long-term sustainability goals. A long-term goal may for companies be to become ISO certified within all manufacturing facilities – meaning these have trackable, environmentally-friendly policies in place.
Being more socially and environmentally responsible often
Sustainability is as much a corporate culture as it is an additive. It is a trend that will continue to guide the hand protection industry in the years to come. R&D teams in this industry will continue to create new, more efficient ways to decrease the hand print on our planet, and at the same time, determine the viability of recycling materials for reproduction and repurposing. An interesting viewpoint on sustainability comes from Deborah Grubbe, chair of the AICHE (American Institute of Chemical Engineers) Institute for Sustainability and owner of Operations & Safety Solutions, LLC. “Consider safety, particularly human safety, as the ultimate form of sustainability… [if this isn’t the case] Why do we need continued innovation? Why do we need enlightened leadership? It’s so the human race can continue to survive, to flourish. And one way to do that is to assure the human race is as safe and sustainable as possible.”

kin contact is a potential source of exposure to toxic materials; it is important that the proper steps be taken to prevent such contact. Most accidents involving hands and arms can be classified under four main hazard categories: chemicals, abrasions, cutting, and heat. There are gloves available that can protect workers from any of these individual hazards or any combination thereof. Gloves should be replaced periodically, depending on frequency of use and permeability to the substance(s) handled. Gloves overtly contaminated should be rinsed and then carefully removed after use. Gloves should also be worn whenever it is necessary to handle rough or sharp-edged objects, and very hot or very cold materials. The type of glove materials to be used in these situations include leather, welder’s gloves, aluminum-backed gloves, and other types of insulated glove materials. Careful attention must be given to protecting your hands when working with tools and machinery. Power tools and machinery must have guards installed or incorporated into their design that prevent the hands from contacting the point of operation, power train, or other moving parts. To protect hands from injury due to contact with moving parts, it is important to: • Ensure that guards are always in place and used. • Always lock-out machines or tools and disconnect the power before making repairs. • Treat a machine without a guard

Cloud Computing. Cloud computing, often referred to simply as ‘the Cloud’, is the provision of on-demand computing resources, everything from applications to data centres, over the Internet on a pay-for-use basis. The Cloud offers computing as a service over the Internet. This covers Software, Platform and Infrastructure. Clouds could be Public, Private or Hybrid. Public Clouds are owned and operated by companies that use them to offer rapid access to affordable computing resources to other organisations or individuals. With public cloud services, users do not need to purchase hardware, software or supporting infrastructure, which is owned and managed by the Providers. A Private Cloud is owned and

operated by a single company that controls the way virtualised resources and automated services are customised and used by various lines of business and constituent groups. Private clouds exist to take advantage of the many efficiencies of a cloud, while providing more control of resources and staying away from of multi-tenancy. A hybrid Cloud uses a private cloud foundation combined with the strategic use of public cloud services. A private cloud cannot exist in isolation from the rest of a company’s IT resources and the public cloud. Most companies with private clouds, over time, evolve to manage workloads across data centres, private clouds and public clouds—thereby creating hybrid clouds. Cloud computing relies on sharing of resources to achieve coherence and economies of

required. Such solutions make it possible for small to medium-sized businesses (SMB’s) to incorporate strong security with robust reliability without the associated CAPEX for traditional on-site deployment. SMB customers typically deploy 3 to 16 cameras. A Cloud based solution would eliminate the need for on-premises servers for storing video images and image management applications. An added saving in operating costs is the cost of personnel that would otherwise be required for systems administration and maintenance of on-premise systems. A cloud-based offering would also help SMB’s who simply do not have the floor space to place a dedicated server.
Typical Solution The Cloud-based video management software solution is deployed on a Cloud computing platform and infrastructure. The hosted service provider offers cloud-based hosting for storing and managing video data from customers. While such solutions have

found acceptance with SMB’s, they are also of interest to Enterprise customers. Enterprise customers use the Cloud based infrastructure to extend their existing on-premise solution to branch offices and other locations around the world. The hosted service provider uses a safe, secure and reliable computing platform and also ensures automatic failover. If one piece of hardware fails, the load is automatically shifted to another server. This ensures an extremely robust and reliable platform. Some providers offer 99.9 percent uptime guarantee. The advent of 4G cell service (refer article in the December 2013 issue) provides greater bandwidth at affordable rates. This technology combines well with Cloud Video Management technology to allow deployment in locations that, previously, were too difficult or too expensive to monitor. With built in 4G modems, the cloud systems offer an all-in-one and out-of-thebox solution for customers who previously had very few options.
Selecting a Hosted Service Provider Like any service provider, the Hosting organization must be reliable & of repute. Security must be a top priority with such an organization. The solution should be based on a secure foundation – infrastructure. The applications must be highly secure & should run on a highly secure platform. Cloud based application enhancements & upgrades should form a part of any contract.
Summary • The Cloud offers computing as a service over the Internet. • Video Security may be perceived as a service offering. • Pay as you use. • The Cloud enables SMB’s to deploy strong security with robust reliability without the associated CAPEX for traditional on-site deployment. • Enterprise customers use the Cloud to extend their existing on-premise solution to branch offices & other locations around the world. • A

of
managing surveillance video. • Business can focus on their core activity instead of the Security infrastructure. • Combined with 4G this enables deployment of cameras in locations that were otherwise too difficult or too expensive to reach.

Emerging applications for miniature thermal imaging cameras
The use of thermal imaging technology and the public’s awareness of its capabilities has increased dramatically in the last decade. Thermal imaging used to be a very expensive technology for military users only. Today, more and more people are discovering the technology and the benefits it has to offer. Thermal imaging cameras produce a clear image in the darkest of nights, in light fog and smoke and in the most diverse weather conditions.
Through television shows like “Rescue 911 and other reality programs that are reporting about the activities of firefighters, policemen and other rescue workers, more and more people are aware of thermal imaging cameras and their capabilities. Many of us have seen on television how thermal imaging can help policemen to locate and follow suspects in total darkness. There has also been an increased interest in thermal imaging for all kinds of security applications, from longrange surveillance at border crossings, truck and shipping container inspection, to the monitoring of high-security installations such as nuclear power stations, airports, & dams. But thermal imaging has a lot more to offer than just a night vision solution for security applications.

The Photon can be used for the most demanding applications.
Thermal imaging: a technology that saves lives Thermal imaging has a multitude of uses, but none are more important than the ones that save lives, whether it is locating people in a fire, finding suspects in total darkness, or helping drivers and captains to navigate at night. It might just be a matter of time before every policeman, firefighter, rescue worker and security guard will have a personal thermal imaging camera in a compact, batterypowered package. At the same time, consumers are gaining access to thermal imaging technology. Car manufacturers are integrating night vision modules for driver vision enhancement into cars. By helping drivers to see at night, accidents can be avoided. Boats and yachts are being equipped with thermal imaging cameras for nighttime navigation and other maritime applications like man

overboard searches. The increasing worldwide demand for thermal imaging cameras has resulted in the ability for manufacturers to bring down production costs considerably. As prices come down and interest in the technology rises, more and more manufacturers across many diverse product areas are seeing the added value of thermal imaging and are willing to integrate a thermal imager in their products. Often the thermal imager is just a small part of the complete product, so it needs to be as small, light and inexpensive as possible.
A wide range of lenses is available to adapt the Photon to virtually any application. The key to achieving low price is the ability to manufacture the infrared sensors in mass quantity with high yield. FLIR Systems has implemented a highly automated microbolometer production line, based on the commercial silicon foundry
Photon: miniature thermal imaging camera developed by FLIR Systems Recent advances in miniaturizing thermal imaging technology have led to the production of the FLIR Systems Photon thermal imaging camera. The Photon is a high sensitivity, high reliability, uncooled, longwave thermal imaging camera. The compact design of the Photon and its low weight and low power consumption make it the ideal thermal imaging camera for numerous thermal infrared imaging applications, particularly those involving battery-powered operation. With an IR sensor based on vanadium oxide microbolometer technology that produces images from a 320 x 256 array, the Photon is intended to be a commodity infrared camera, made in large quantities as a standard product, yet with a diverse variety of optional features that make it attractive to a wide market space.
www.ind-safety.com
The Photon fits in the palm of one’s hand, is extremely lightweight (only 130 grams with 19 mm lens), and consumes less than 1.6 watts. It is very similar in form to compact CMOS cameras for visible-light imaging. The Photon infrared sensor is a 320 by 256 pixel focal plane array (FPA) that images in the 7.5-13.5 micron, or longwave infrared waveband. The longwave infrared band is particularly useful for seeing people in the dark, even through smoke. The Photon is a fully integrated camera that has both analog video and 14-bit digital data outputs as well as an RS-232 serial communications port, all three of which are brought out to a single 15-pin high density connector that also contains the power input pins.
No thermoelectric cooler
A wide range of lenses is available to adapt the Photon to virtually any application
process model. This production line has the highest production capacity in the world by far. It uses cassetteto-cassette wafer handling technology to speed up production, as well as metrology integrated into the line to ensure continuous process feedback.
The Photon’s FPA does not require temperature stabilization, thus eliminating the thermoelectric cooler (TEC) found in other microbolometer cameras. Although there are other TECless cameras, they do not have the wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +80°C) of a FLIR TEC-less camera. Making a camera that operates without a TEC was made possible by FLIR’s development of proprietary read-out circuitry and novel non-uniformity correction algorithms. This design feature leads to a number of major advantages over thermal infrared cameras with TECs:

The Photon can be used for a wide variety of commercial applications
• The Photon can produce an image in about 2 seconds from power up, because it does not require that the FPA be at a particular temperature for operation, as is the case with TE-stabilized cameras. This is a big advantage in firefighting applications, since cameras are turned on and off to conserve battery power and any delays in producing an image can be potentially dangerous. • There is reduced power consumption, crucial in applications where the camera operates on battery power. This power consumption does increase as the difference between the camera case temperature & the FPA temperature grows, a situation often encountered in applications such as firefighting where ambient air temperatures can be several hundred degrees C. • There is greatly reduced heat buildup within the camera package, especially important in applications where the camera is enclosed in insulation and selfheats. TECs draw substantial current and therefore generate plenty of waste heat. • The Photon’s scene dynamic range can be extended considerably over TE-stabilized cameras, due to the reduction of the effects

of stray radiation from the optics and FPA enclosure. An extended dynamic range allows the thermal imaging camera to see a wide range of temperatures in the scene without saturating the image, a situation often found in firefighting applications.
Photon: an excellent thermal imaging camera to include in a wide variety of products and applications For an infrared camera to be successful in the commercial marketplace, it has to be adaptable to a wide variety of applications. The number of applications for infrared cameras is growing at a tremendous rate as the price decreases. The Photon’s advanced signal processing is highly versatile and can be programmed in a variety of different ways that allow for specialty features for diverse applications. For example, the firefighting market drove the development of a coarse spot radiometer that indicates temperature within a 2 by 2 pixel region of interest. Another firefighting feature implemented in software is the false coloring of pixels within the image. The color of these pixels correspond to temperatures over adjustable
thresholds for rapid identification of hot areas in the scene.
Driver Vision enhancement Nighttime driving presents serious risks to drivers of cars, trucks, buses and other vehicles. Many serious accidents occur at night, in fog, and in light rain because the driver could not see an object in time to prevent the collision. Each year, thousands of nighttime accidents occur with large vehicles, many due to adverse weather conditions. Drivers may lack the ability to quickly reduce speed, fatigue can negatively affect reaction time, and vision gets severely impaired in the dark. Thermal imaging is a powerful driver’s vision enhancement tool which significantly reduces the risks of nighttime driving and allows the driver to see up to 5 times farther than with headlights. It needs no illumination to operate. Thanks to thermal imaging, drivers can more quickly detect and recognize potential hazards and avoid deadly accidents. Thermal imaging also helps

Thermal image drivers to see road edges better, see approaching curves earlier, overcome momentary blindness from oncoming headlight glare and see through smoke, dust, light fog and light rain. BMW has started using this technology on its 7-, 6- and 5-series passenger cars to facilitate night time driving. Buses and trucks are used much more intensely than passenger cars and can greatly benefit from this technology. FLIR Systems markets the PathFindIR as a specific thermal imaging camera solution tailored to the demanding needs of the transportation industry. Essentially, the core of the PathFindIR is a Photon camera, which is packaged in an extremely rugged housing that withstands harsh driving conditions.

night vision enhancement. It helps pilots by enhancing the ability to see terrain and other aircraft at long ranges, even in total darkness, light fog, dust and smoke. The EVS3 is designed for integration with existing multifunction displays, with a simple “power in and standard video out” interface. The FLIR’s patented Digital Detail Enhancement (DDE); which is included in the Photon, assures excellent image quality regardless of scene dynamics, revealing scene detail missed by more expensive competitive systems. A choice of lens options is available to accommodate various flight profiles with wide, medium and narrow fields of view.
longer than visible light wavelengths, making longwave thermal imaging cameras ideal for this application. The ability to detect temperature differences of objects is vitally important to firefighters, who must often open doors that lead to fires, or who must identify the seat & extension of a fire quickly and reliably. Reducing the size, weight and cost of fire service thermal imaging cameras while improving performance has been of paramount importance to the industry, as some earlier fire services cameras were heavy and awkward to use, lacked
Firefighting – seeing through smoke Firefighters have been using thermal imaging cameras for years in order to see in absolute darkness or through smoke, as well as to detect hot spots in floors, walls and ceilings. Smoke has a large component of micronsized carbon soot particles in it, making it very absorbing to visible light. However, when the particle size is significantly smaller than the wavelength of light used by a sensor, the scattering is greatly reduced, making it possible to see through smoke. Longwave infrared light has a wavelength that is about 20 times
sufficient dynamic range to be useful in some situations, and were too expensive for many fire departments. Mine Safety Appliances Co. (MSA) (Pittsburgh, PA) has integrated a version of the Photon camera into their Evolution® 5200, Evolution 5200HD2 and the new Evolution 5600 for the fire service. It is also used in the ThermalTrac™ camera for law enforcement. The fire service requires a camera with a very wide scene dynamic range, such that the camera can be pointed in the direction of a veryhot fire, yet still produce a useable image of the colder surroundings or personnel without saturation. The Photon has a 14-bit scene dynamic range, and uses a non-linear histogram AGC algorithm to map the 14-bit range to an 8-bit analog video display. The camera also has two gain states which are automatically

selected according to the percentage of pixels in the image that go above or below a threshold value. This enables the camera to be used in both extremes of environments that firefighters regularly encounter, such as a dark wet basement and a burning room.
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) Unmanned aerial vehicles are becoming more and more common in military and civilian operations, especially miniature aircraft designed to fly at low altitude. These radio-controlled planes can be equipped with video cameras that are downlinked to a ground station. Thermal imaging allows
the aircraft to fly in total darkness and detect targets through smoke. The same aircraft can also be used to detect such things as forest fires. Areas which are hotter than the surroundings can indicate the start of a fire and can clearly be seen on a thermal image. AeroVironment (AVAV) (Simi Valley, CA), a leader in unmanned aircraft systems, has integrated the Photon into several of their products, including the handlaunched Raven B. Since the Raven B is a lightweight UAV powered by batteries, minimizing the weight and size of any on-board instrument is crucial. Typically, the Photon is mounted inside the aircraft’s nose cone, pointing forward and angled down for reconnaissance and navigation. This capability enables the Raven B to provide true day and night operation, resulting in a formidable tool for acquiring real-time situational awareness in a wide variety of environments and applications.
Thermal surveillance Qioptiq based in the UK is a designer and manufacturer of infrared and image intensified night vision equipment. The company has integrated the Photon in one of their handheld thermal surveillance sight products called “VIPIR2-S” and in the weapon mounted “VIPIR-2”. Since the equipment needs to be small and lightweight so that it
can easily be carried in the field, the Photon was the perfect instrument to integrate in the VIPIR. Moreover, the low power consumption of the Photon allows the VIPIR to be operated on only 4 commercial AA batteries for over 6 hours. The absence of a Thermoelectric cooler in the Photon allows the operator of the VIPIR to switch on the device and get a clear image immediately.
Infrared everywhere The FLIR Systems Photon thermal imaging camera is a major step to the arrival of miniature, low-cost thermal imaging cameras in the technology marketplace. As volumes are increasing and prices continue to fall, we will see the Photon and similar products incorporated into a host of OEM applications and packages. Thermal imaging will, in the not-too-distant future, be as ubiquitous as technologies like GPS and Radar that had their origins in military laboratories but are today widely spread and accepted by consumers worldwide.
