A+A in Düsseldorf continues its upswing : More than 63,000 Trade visitors made for a great mood in the Halls Growth Markets Burgeoning – Healthy and Motivated Staff are a Key Competitive Factor
R
The next A+A will be held from in Düsseldorf from 27/10 to 30/10/2015.

unning four days the A+A in Düsseldorf came to a close on Friday (08/11) with a new increase in visitor numbers as well as a further rise in interest from international visitors. This means it has impressively underlined its leading global position as a market and communication platform for health and safety at work. Over 63,000 trade visitors (2011: 60,100) came here to gather information on the latest trends in the focal areas of the trade fair: Safety, Security and Health at Work and Special Equipment for Disaster / Emergency Management. “More than one in four visitors came from abroad. Our partner land activities launched in 2009 are generating valuable contacts both in political and commercial terms. These contacts help our exhibitors to open up attractive growth markets,” said Joachim Schäfer, Managing Director at Messe Düsseldorf, delighting at the great response from visitors and the high acceptance of A+A internationally. After Russia (2009) and Poland (2011) this year’s partner country at A+A was Turkey. A working population of 23 million means great user potential, particularly in personal protective equipment and Corporate Fashion. Halil Etyemez, Turkey’s Deputy Minister for Labour and Social Security, talked at A+A 2013 of the enormous efforts his country is making to improve health and safety at work by means of a stricter legal framework and very far-reaching occupational safety provisions. Relations with Turkey at the political and occupational safety level are to be further intensified. In
cooperation with the Turkish Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Messe Düsseldorf will be organising with its Turkish foreign representation the first Turkish Occupational Safety + Health Exhibition (TOS+H Expo) in Istanbul from 5 to 7 May 2014.
Good Mood in the Halls – Market on Course for Growth “The A+A has given another strong boost to business in our dynamic sector. The halls saw large visitor numbers across all days of the fair. Anyone coming to A+A is very qualityfocused. Our customers invest in the safety of their staff, ensure great wear comfort, appealing design and suitability of application for their protective equipment and clothing,” said Klaus Bornack, President of the Trade Fair Advisory Board at A+A 2013 and Managing Director at Bornack GmbH & Co. KG, summing up the good mood of the suppliers in the halls. Werner Heitmann, Head of Communication & Sales Marketing Europe Central at Dräger, draws an equally enthusiastic conclusion: “The trade fair is excellently organised. The quality and quantity of customer contacts are very satisfactory. The international spread of the audience is also increasing. Response to the congress was also very good. In short we are satisfied all-round.” The market signals are also positive. According to findings from a survey carried out by macrom and presented at A+A, the market volume for PPE (personal protective equipment) in Germany stands approximately at an annual Euro 1.7 b. This corresponds to growth between

integration of migrants.” Thinking in age-related terms is not just thinking about the elderly, Dr Sedlatschek continued: “Young people are the old people of the future. We should endeavour to win them over in favour of safety at work and prevention.”
Trend Barometer A+A – Hip Colours, High Quality 2004 and 2012 of 35%.
Prevention provides Economic Edge In parallel to the trade fair the international A+A Congress this year counted some 6,000 participants and thereby also sent out both positive and clear signals. As with the international conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the focal point lay here on prevention, the recognition of occupational illnesses and the correct treatment of those affected. “Prevention is an investment in the future. Maintaining and promoting the health and performance of employees is gaining importance internationally for companies, social security and in the political sphere,” said Bruno Zwingmann, Managing Director at the German Federal Association for Occupational Safety and Health (Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft für Sicherheit und Gesundheit bei der Arbeit e. V.), summing up the core statements at A+A 2013. A safe and healthy working environment, he said, decisively contributed to companies’ innovative and competitive edge. Against the backdrop of demographic developments multiple concepts are required – as stressed by Dr Christa Sedlatschek, Director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), on her visit to A+A: “We need to have a positive impact on fitness for work. This impacts issues such as work structuring, work organisation, mental health, juggling work and family life, job security or even the better

Without doubt suppliers have recognised the sign of the times. On a tour round the exhibition halls at A+A 2013 everyone was able to convince themselves of their wealth of ideas. A good 1,600 exhibitors from 55 nations, more than ever before in the history of the event, presented the entire range of products and services for personal protection, healthy working in the most varied of activities as well as for the realisation of smooth operating procedures. A considerable trend – and one particularly likely to appeal to young users – is the dovetailing of fashion and function. Even protective footwear in the highest safety category
is now indistinguishable from trendy leisure sneakers thanks to hip colours (from bright blue and purple to neon green), low weight and comfortfocused fit. Even if the design cleverly masks the protective function here, the functionality of the PPE deserves closer inspection. Modern fabrics and highquality, high-tech materials make for durability, easy care, pleasant wear comfort as well as good (body) climate on every assignment. Assignment– specific features such as custom-fit pockets for tools, measuring devices
or mobile telephones increase wear acceptance levels further. Overall a holistic approach dominates. The combination of different, intercoordinated equipment components provides optimum safety. Worth mentioning here for instance are multi-functional protective helmets which have slots for a wide variety of tools for different application purposes – from hearing protectors and head torches to eye protection. Corporate Fashion is also very much on trend. An overview of the trendy colours, styles and materials of this very fashion-focused clothing with its less pronounced protective function – that is primarily in demand in service sectors – featured in the trade fair’s very well attended daily presentations at the A+A fashion show. A special live experience in terms of conveying Best Practices was also provided by the other Theme Parks at A+A. Ergonomics and healthy workplace design in various sectors were at the focus of the Theme Park WorkplaceDesign. Concepts, product innovations and services for the handling of hazardous substances, as well as PPE were focalised in the Innovation Park Safety & Security. Fire prevention and safe behaviour in the event of an accident also generated great interest in the presentations of the Theme Park Disaster and Emergency Management (organised by Works Fire Brigade Association Germany (Werkfeuerwehrverbandes Deutschland – WFV). British Safety Council welcomes drop in fatal and major injuries in GB workplaces The British Safety Council welcomed the improvements in Great Britain’s health and safety performance published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) yesterday in its annual statistics report. HSE noted a significant reduction in the number of workers killed and seriously injured at work. The number and incidence of fatal injuries in Great Britain fell significantly as did the number and incidence of major injuries.
A
lex Botha, chief executive of the British Safety Council, while welcoming these improvements, noted that much more needed to be done in order to achieve the British Safety Council’s vision that no one should be injured or made in Britain’s workplaces. “While the number of people killed and seriously injured in Britain’s workplaces continues to fall year-onyear we echo the comments of HSE’s chair, Judith Hackitt, that many of these deaths and serious injuries could have been prevented by simple safety measures,” said Alex Botha. “While the number of deaths in British workplaces has halved over the last 20 years – 148 workers killed in 2012/13 compared to nearly 300 in 1993/94 – it remains a major concern that the agriculture, construction and waste re-cycling sectors together account for almost half of these unnecessary deaths. “We must not forget the tragic toll of work-related disease. HSE reports that around 13,000 deaths each year are attributable to workrelated disease including occupational cancers – 40% in construction. The British Safety Council has joined many of its member organisations operating in construction and pledged its support for the Public Health Responsibility Deal for the construction and civil engineering sectors to help address the blight of ill health at work and work-related disease.
24 | NOVEMBER 2013 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
“The British Safety Council and its member organisations firmly believe that our regulatory framework governing workplace health and safety is effective in helping to control the risk of injury and ill health in the workplace. But we all have a role to play in ensuring risks are properly controlled to prevent harm in the workplace. Workplace injury and work-related ill-health have a damaging impact on individuals, business, government and wider society. By working together we can prevent unnecessary harm to thousands of people and help cut the cost to society – an estimated £13.8 billion a year.”
About the British Safety Council For more than half a century we’ve been a trusted guide to excellent health, safety and environmental management. We have educated millions of workers and made hundreds of thousands of workplaces safer for everyone. We do this by sharing information, supporting, advising, educating and campaigning. We are not-for-profit. We would be grateful if you could use British Safety Council in full rather than abbreviating to BSC when quoting our organisation.

Rosslare Showcased Its biometric solution at ADI biometric workshop across the country
R
osslare Security, a worldwide provider of professional Access Control and Intrusion Security solutions, showcased its Biometric Solution at the ADI Biometric Workshop, which was held across Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmadabad, Pune and Mumbai in July 2013. Twenty system integrators visited each of our workshop locations. Rosslare’s biometric system consists of a controller, a fingerprint reader, and a card/fingerprint programmer. Fingerprints, unlike other methods such as cards, are much harder to copy or steal. Access controls that use fingertips scans are more secure and provide a higher level of protection. The fingerprint readers (AYCW6500, AY-B1663, and AY-B1660) are connected to the controller (AC-225). Once the user places their fingertip on the designated pad, the reader starts scanning and in a matter of seconds the system verifies the user’s credentials. If the user does not exist in the system’s database, the unit sounds the proper warning sound. Another method is by using cards and fingerprints. Cards and fingerprints are programmed and enrolled using a programmer (CP-R25 or CP-R26). The fingerprint is enrolled onto the card and stored therein. When the user passes a card through the reader, the reader checks the correlation between the fingerprints stored on the card and the fingerprint that the user just presented to the reader to verify that the card owner is indeed the person trying to enter. This adds increases the security
30 | NOVEMBER 2013 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
level. When a card is swiped, only the fingerprint on the card is read instead of a massive database connected to the controller, which would be a timeconsuming. The system simply checks that the fingerprint saved on the card is also the one being scanned. If no card is used, the system searches for a match of the scanned fingertip in its database. If an isolated location needs to be secured, the AYC-B7661 standalone fingerprint reader can provide the perfect security. Its standalone design allows it to manage an access control entrance without any outside dependency. It uses a capacitive fingerprint scanner to allow for a more secured and reliable system. Capacitive scanners are harder to trick and produce fewer false positives.

R. STAHL’s head of technology appointed Chairman of IECEx Prof. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold will become head of one of the world’s most important organizations in explosion protection
R
. Stahl’s (ISIN DE000A1PHBB5) Vice President Technology is to be named head of the international engineering standards committee in explosion protection, IECEx. The company sees this as an acknowledgement of its sector leadership and of its strong focus on quality. Prof. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold was elected Chairman of IECEx systems at the annual meeting of the organization’s Management Committee in Fortaleza, Brazil. The IECEx system is an organization affiliated with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), with presently 31 member states. The organization facilitates the operation of conformity assessment systems of products and services for hazardous areas. Its activities ensure both that production facilities and services in hazardous areas conform with international safety standards, and that assessments carried out by certifying bodies are uniform on a global basis. The IECEx has accredited over 40 international certifying bodies and testing laboratories that in the past ten years have issued over 31,000 certificates and test reports. The accredited facilities thereby make a material contribution towards the compliance with safety standards in explosion protection. A growing contribution comes from the certification of service providers in hazardous activities and professionals with competence in explosion protection. The appointment of Dr Arnhold as IECEx Chairman was confirmed and announced at this year’s annual general meeting of the IEC, held in October in New Delhi. The of will take on the honorary poste as of 1 January

2014, and serve a term of three years. Dr Arnhold has been active in explosion protection with R. Stahl for 21 years, and has served on various international standardization bodies for the past 18 years. He has been Chairman of the German IECEx mirror panel, as well as chief of the German delegation to the annual meeting of the IECEx management committee. R. Stahl’s CEO, Martin Schomaker, commented, “We consider the appointment of Prof. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold on the one hand as an award for his person and his skills, and on the other hand as an acknowledgement of the strong focus on quality of the R. STAHL group.” The landscape for international certification on explosion protection for production facilities is presently still very fragmented. Many regions and countries require specific certifications that in essence make the same claim: this product complies with current IEC standards and can be used in Ex areas. This state of affairs is unsatisfactory for producers and operators with international activities, as it increases market entrance fees and unnecessarily lengthens the time to market, without offering an increase in safety. “Our mission is the introduction of a single certificate that, like a passport, allows for free traffic of explosion-proof goods”, stated Arnhold in his application speech in Fortaleza. Other areas of focus during his term of office will be the development of a certification system for service providers and professionals, as well as further regional expansion of the IECEx system. CP PLUS introduces HDCVI (High Definition Composite Video Interface) Technology
C
P PLUS GmbH & Co. KG introduces HDCVI (High Definition Composite Video Interface), a revolutionary technology for analog cameras & digital video recorders, equipping the analog solution to deliver high definition video under conventional co-axial cabling environment at an affordable value.
Today’s Challenges:Analog video is a universal standard and has been there for several decades in the industry. In fact, the surveillance deployments are still majorly dominated by analog solutions. Although surveillance technology and its market are undergoing a profound change, the IP solution is popular due to its High Definition image quality and less generation losses. Knowing these facts, analog surveillance still admired due to its affordability, vast existing market, easy to install (Plug-n-Play) features. System Integrators/customers face various challenges in analog solution. They generally demand for high quality images at affordable cost. At the time of any incident, the surveillance solution should not only be able to detect but also capture minute details of the same. In addition to this, analog
surveillance does not support long co-axial cables for video transmission. Despite this fact, long distance cables are being used, resulting in poor video quality.
HDCVI: A revolution in the world of Analog surveillance Considering such challenges, the concept of HDCVI technology has been introduced for analog CCTV cameras and Digital Video Recorders. The highest available resolution in analog is 960H, HDCVI crosses the barrier and offers High Definition video quality in existing analog infrastructure. In addition to High Definition video quality, HDCVI offers host of benefits such as: 1. Affordable High Definition Video Surveillance Solution 2. Easy & fast upgradation to High Definition video 3. Works on traditional co-axial cable 4. Long distance video transmission over 500mtr
5. Video, audio & control just over one cable
How HDCVI works: HDCVI modulates video signal to level and then transmit by adopting base-band and quadrature amplitude modulation, which is also the reason of its naming. HDCVI solution incorporates both cameras and DVRs and the system is star topology structured. DVR is served as a node to have an over Coax P2P (Point-toPoint) transmission to camera. Cable selection is based on transmission distance; cable 75-3 and 75-5 are recommended for transmission within 500mtr, cable 75-5 and above for over 500mtr. Connector and jointing technology could be applied for connecting and installation is exactly is the same as that of conventional analog devices, which posts no special requirements either for indoor or outdoor scenarios with better antiinterference capability offered. Therefore, HDCVI is an optimal solution for megapixel high definition application, featuring non-latent nondistance transmission at lower cost.

of new products, Matrix R&D is the foundation of its growth and sustenance. The R&D team designs products conforming to the relevant international standards. Besides the product research, we have a market research team which dedicatedly works on identifying new products, segments and trends across the globe. They closely interact with our customers and industries to identify future requirements and trends and design products accordingly.
Q. Brief us about the quality policy for your business? We at Matrix are driven by the mission of delivering world-class Security and Telecom solutions to all our customers through continual improvements in technology and processes. We believe it is possible to build world-class products in India for the international markets including the developed countries.
Q. What are your strategies to improve the Matrix position in Indian & global market as well? To begin with, Matrix products are amply differentiated in architecture, functions and features from competition. In marketing and sales, we believe in strong distribution and channel network. We have nearly 600+ channel partners spread across the globe who are busy marketing, selling and supporting Matrix products. Not only in India but our products are available in other countries of Europe, America, Middle-East, Africa, Asia and Australia. Our marketing team works closely with these channel partners to ensure that the products serve the communication needs of the customers efficiently, faster and longer. We also have a special customer care department which provides prompt assistance to the customers. Finally, we invest a lot of resources in after-sales support to the
end-customers & channel partners.
Q. which are the key technological trends that are driving the access control industry? Prompt, Non-intrusive and accurate identification of people is the basic challenge in Access Control. There are technologies like palm readers, face recognitions, iris readers etc. being developed, improved and perfected. Another area is integration of AccessControl with other solutions like surveillance, fire safety and telecom. The third aspect is related to the networking, administration and control of multi-location sites remotely.
Q. What are the issues you need to address that are related to your industry? Security equipment business is tightly linked with overall economic growth. Lack of customer acceptability of quality product due to price and low awareness about value deliverables of genuine security products hinders the growth. Products from low-cost countries are inferior and very cheap due to the various direct and indirect subsidies the producers get from their governments. We lose many cost sensitive customers to these cheap products in the short run. Indian product companies are left to fend for themselves against such unfair competition. There is no need of any protection, but government should ensure some kind of level-playing field if we want Indian electronics manufacturing to grow.
Q. What is your vision for Matrix? We want Matrix to be a world-class Products and Solutions company operating all-over the world.

CMMI Certified Management In 2009, Hikvision started to work with some consulting firms to enhance its internal efficiency of R&D, quality control, and production. Since then, the company has introduced Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) to greatly improve its process management of product research and development. CMMI is a process improvement training and certification program and service administered and marketed by the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University. Hikvision employs a matrix management structure for its R&D department, which allows them to succeed in cross-department project cooperation between its resource teams and product teams. Hikvision’s product teams are categorized by its product lines, including DVR/NVR, network cameras, analog cameras, vertical-specific VMS and others while the resource team is divided by several key technologies – hardware, image processing, video/audio codec, compression, networking, streaming media, FPGA applications, video data storage, embedded applications, software structure and others. At Hikvision, a specialized project team, from groups of resource teams and the corresponding product teams, is usually formed to develop a new product. This means each group of resource teams has to be responsible for several product development projects and must be able to work on multiple projects simultaneously. It is worth mentioning that software is the core value of Hikvision product development. “Although we sold mostly hardware, software is the key inside hardware. Hikvision has a powerful software capability. A large amount of work is on the software side, even in hardware manufacturing,”
Q. How do you foresee “India” as a potential market, what are the prospects? Unlike the more developed video surveillance equipment markets of Europe and North America, India was far less impacted by the recent economic downturn. With a growth rate averaging more than 20 percent

over the next five years, India will continue to offer suppliers solid growth opportunities as more established and mature video surveillance markets continue feeling the impact of economic uncertainty. The Government has taken several initiatives to upgrade and enhance security systems in India. The terrorist attack on Mumbai in 2008 proved to be a turning point for the India Video Surveillance Camera Market. This resulted in increased demands for video surveillance systems by the police force and security organizations. Government initiatives like establishment of advance surveillance systems along with majorfund allotments to secure all key government infrastructures like transportation facilities, financial corporations, educational institutions, industrial & commercial establishments has fuelled the growth of video surveillance camera market in India.
Q. What are your strategies which helps Hikvision’s to sustain leading position in Indian & global market as well? Market-Oriented Product Development What is worth mentioning is that Hikvision’s R&D team also has to meet the sales target, along with sales team. “The product should be market-oriented and clearly meet the needs for the customers. The KPI for each product line is to meet certain sales targets. R&D also takes the responsibility if their products don’t meet the real market demand. Product Usability Product usability requirements are quite high in overseas markets. This year, Hikvision put a lot of R&D resources in product user interface, client software, and mobile APP to elevate the ease of use in its products. Hikvision also started to

outsource the language-related design and the external design of its latest network cameras, including aesthetic outlook and internal software design, two or three years ago. The product usability of Hikvision’s products now is greatly improved. Supply Chain Collaboration Hikvision also follows the “integrated supply chain” concept, proposed by Huawei Technologies. The supply chain includes suppliers (manufacturing partners), Hikvision (the company), and Hikvision’s clients. We invite all these parties together for joint product evaluation and collaboration, advised by our consulting company. We also ask our suppliers to join our product development. They provide suggestions on how to make those products meet international standards and how to optimize the structure/system.
Quality Control Hikvision has developed a comprehensive and strict management system in process. In Hikvision, the quality control department is independent from R&D and production department. These three departments are positioned equally to complement and evaluate each other. Quality control, a complete system from R&D design, manufacturing to service, is categorized into reliability verification, test, process control, productivities, and after-sales service. “Under each item, we have a specific objective and indicators to measure

the outcome, with this system, Hikvision is able to provide further assurance for customers -- Design Quality Assurance (DQA) and Manufacturing Quality Assurance (MQA). Design Quality Assurance DQA is under the R&D product testing department mainly for product reliability verification. Hikvision has more than 2,000 people on their R&D team--the largest in the security sector. Around 350 engineers on the R&D team, which accounts for over 15 percent of the team, are responsible for product testing. The product testing group is in charge of software tests, hardware tests, and reliability tests, which all play an important role in product development and guaranteeing product quality. The tests include anti-interference, anti-radiation, extreme temperature, vibration, drop, water-proof, electrostatic surge and electrocution prevention, salt spray, and anti-wind/dust tests, etc. The product testing group conducts tests in many different testing laboratories, such as a 960-squaremeter (10,333 square feet) stability and pressure testing laboratory, two image quality testing rooms, and a large laboratory for integration, monitoring, and management systems testing. In total, all of the laboratories combined occupy 1,300 square meters (13,993 square feet). Manufacturing Quality Assurance MQA is divided into four categories: raw materials quality control, productive process, tests, and outgoing quality control. Boasting over 100,000 square meters (1.1 million square feet) of manufacturing space, Hikvision’s production facilities are underpinned by state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and resources. As an example of this point, in 2011, Hikvision introduced Siemens’ fully-automatic SMT equipment for production lines, ensuring world-class technical capability. Hikvision also has dual dustless

workshops for precise component assembly of camera lenses. Occupying 800 square meters (8,611 square feet), the workshops measure up to the highest cleaning standard - a class of 100,000. In addition, to ensure high product quality, all the products need to pass the high-temperature aging test and the company also developed foolproof equipment, such as auto focus tester and auto testing software, to efficiently reduce human errors and poor visibility during production. SAP System for High Production Efficiency To meet its huge sales volume target, Hikvision purchased a SAP system from Germany to avoid any problems in materials preparation cycles which may lead to downtime of the production line. With the barcode, the whole production and quality control process can be traced: each machine can be analyzed for the specific time for production, and identification of every supplier and operator. “With the SAP system, we can efficiently optimize material management to achieve low inventory and turnover rate with guaranteed quality,”
Q. What are the key technological trends that are driving the security industry? The India Video Surveillance Camera Market is conventionally ruled by analog based surveillance systems. However, video surveillance technology has shown an impressive evolution from the analog to digital. The dire need for smart and intelligent security systems due to increased criminal activities has also triggered the demand for video surveillance camera systems in India. Further, the image quality is of paramount importance in carrying out judicial procedures and law enforcement. This year seems to be promising and rewarding for the India Video Surveillance Camera Market. The aftermarket for essential elements like distributors of monitoring equipment,
SMT production vendors for hardware & software system integration equipment’s, distributors of optical lens, sensor and processor chips also contribute to the growth of India Video Surveillance Camera Market. The key opportunities for India Video Surveillance Camera Market would be the demand for enhanced image quality; IP camera systems, emergence of mobile and cloud based video surveillance services. Demand for high-resolution cameras would increase by creating customer awareness regarding better resolution pictures for various applications.

Q. What are the distinguishing facts of global market as against the Indian market? Today, the security industry in India is fragmented with minimal government regulations and policies. We believe that as the industry is beginning mature, more policies and regulations will come along to protect the endusers, integrators and manufacturers. Most of the organizations see access control systems as a ‘good to have’ component. We hope that the consumers’ attitudes will become more proactive and consider access control systems as a ‘must have’ item in the coming years.
Q. What are your strategies to improve the HID‘s position in Indian & global market as well? Our growth strategy is founded on the principle of extending and enhancing the HID Global customer experience in product quality, delivery and service through a unique set of value-added customer advantages. Additionally, we strive to solve difficult customer problems, while differentiating our offering within an increasingly standards-based market environment. There are a number of marketspecific growth factors. The first is the impact of mobility on access control technology, fueled by the emergence of near field communications (NFC) and other technologies. We’re seeing accelerating adoption of key ecosystem elements such as NFC-enabled smartphones that are a prerequisite for growth in mobile access control
services and applications. Another key development is the convergence of physical and logical access to create more capable, unified identity platforms. Thirdly, we are also seeing an acceleration of contactless smartcards technology & IP-based access control solutions for increased functionality & application convergence. And finally, there is growing demand for interoperable migration solutions and higher security to protect customers’ technology investments. Each of these trends is driving significant new innovation to meet our customers’ needs.
Q. What are the key technological trends that are driving the access control industry? Users increasingly want a single credential for entering the building, logging onto the network, accessing applications and other systems, and gaining remote access to secure networks without needing a onetime password (OTP) token or key fob. It’s more convenient, and greatly improves security by enabling strong authentication throughout the IT infrastructure on key systems and applications, rather than just at the perimeter. It also reduces deployment and operational costs, by enabling organizations to leverage their existing credential investment to seamlessly add logical access control for network log-on and create a fully interoperable, multi-layered security solution across company networks, systems and facilities.
Q. What is your vision for HID? Our goal is to continue to deliver even greater simplicity in helping our customers create, use and manage secure identity, in a world where security threats continue to grow and privacy assurances are increasingly critical.

Indian market is growing bigger and bigger and In India Potential is huge , especially when India’s economy is growing and industrial and commercial buildings are being setup in large numbers the scope for Fire & safety is very high. Q. What are the distinguishing facts of global market as against the Indian market? Today Indian Market compared to global markets is same as we are an growing country the scope is very huge but in India we are lacking awareness of Fire Fighting and Life safety and there are no stringent laws for the same. Further Indian Market is based on Competitive Pricing then Quality.
Q. What are your strategies to improve your company’s position in Indian & global market as well? We at WINCO are currently focusing to avail International standards like

Q. What is your vision for your company? My Vision is to make Winco a Leading Company in providing Fire Fighting Equipments throughout the globe In Coming years; “WINCO” shall constantly strive to improve its performance through implementation of goal-oriented quality management system.
Q. what are the issues you need to address that are related to your industry. There is lack of awareness and knowledge for fire protection still today in India many people refer Fire Extinguisher as Red Bottles and also many people don’t understand the Hydrant System or sprinkler system, they prefer the same as Red Pipes. In case of fire no one educated or has the knowledge and is aware to how to operate the system or an extinguisher. In my view government should make mandatory for Offices Schools and colleges to give Basic Training and Education & regularly conduct mock drills for Fire Fighting and Life Safety. Further there are no major safety standards for Fire Safety in India government should enforce standards and pass law to maintain them and individuals violating the Fire and Safety rules shall be punished under the law to make our country a Fire Safe Country.

His promotion, effective immediately, represents part of the strategic process at Barix to build a strong management team that will lead the company to new growth. He reports directly to Barix CEO Ronni Guggenheim. Since coming to Barix, Frank has focused on enhancing the user experience for customers through streamlined solutions that simplify ease of use and installation. He oversaw the development and rollout of Barix’s recently-introduced IP Paging ecosystem, which eliminates complex configuration processes in favor of a plug-and-play solution where Barix devices self-configure automatically. Frank will continue to oversee product management at Barix while working to enhance company operations, with an emphasis on improved logistics, manufacturing and fulfillment to more effectively meet customer demand. As a result, he expects Barix to strengthen its focus on complete solutions and better vertical integration. “IP streaming has entered the mainstream, and many of our customers need more than capable hardware devices; they need a complementary environment around those devices to control, manage and monitor their entire systems,” said Frederiksen. “We have simplified interfaces and improved ease of use over the past year so that our customers don’t need to be IT experts. And there
are exciting developments on the horizon that will better position Barix as a complete IP solutions provider.” Barix’s global product management & logistics/fulfillment teams will report to Frank, and he expects to leverage this opportunity to build a more flexible production environment. “I look forward to establishing a stronger link between defining products and bringing them to market,” he said. “The combination of overseeing products and production responsibilities is a good basis for driving operations and budget.”

TECH UPDATE
Monitoring Fixed Gaseous Suppression Systems One of the key challenges facing business currently is business continuity, particularly in high asset and hazardous environments. With the growth in awareness on this particular subject over the last ten years or so, one thing has become apparent, namely that many fixed suppression systems globally have suffered from accidental discharge or slow seepage. Often this occurs without the knowledge of the business owner. Many business owners will only have their fixed suppression system checked once a year in order to meet their safety criteria.
H
Carl Hunter , Managing Director & CEO, Coltraco
istorically, the checking of a fixed fire suppression system involved shutting the system down and weighing each individual cylinder using scales. Ten years ago Coltraco developed the Permalevel Single Point single point system for the UK’s Atomic Energy Authority, building on its development 20 years ago of a portable liquid level indicator called Portalevel. This system was designed to allow the monitoring of up to five individual fire suppression cylinders monitoring the applications on a 24/7 basis. This system was first used by the US Navy & Royal Navy, which are two of the most safety aware organisations on the planet. One of the key challenges that has faced the fire suppression industry over the last few years has been the growth in size of facilities such as data centres. If a data centre for an organisation such as Google was to be damaged by fire, it would affect not only Google but also the millions of people who use it on a daily basis. This
industry along with the oil and gas industry, which is particularly safety conscious, and high rise buildings in Dubai has driven the development of the Permalevel Multiplex system. As we have seen, one of the main challenges facing the industry is how to keep both high-rise residential buildings safe and industry running in ever more challenging environments. Therefore how can we overcome those challenges? The Permalevel Multiplex system is designed to provide 24/7 monitoring of anything from five to 700 cylinder level points. One of the key drivers during development came from Dubai. There were concerns with regard to some of the high-rise tower blocks, and the integrity of their fire suppression systems was questioned due to a number of fires occurring in these developments. From talking to the developers of these tower blocks the aim therefore became to develop a system whereby enough modules could be produced and networked in

TECH UPDATE
Gaseous ems order to monitor 700 cylinders. This is the first fixed system worldwide that is capable of monitoring the liquid level of critical fire suppression systems that use liquid suppressant agents such as FM200, Novec 1230 and CO2 on a constant basis. The equipment is also rated to withstand temperatures of 70°C and relative humidity of 95 percent. This makes it particularly suited to the type of industries such as data centres, offshore oil and gas platforms and drilling ships, high rise buildings, shipping and power generating facilities. These high-value high risk industries, where a fire would have a major detrimental impact on the day-to-day running of their business, recognise the added safety value that comes from being able to monitor the contents of their fire suppression systems 24/7. The system is designed to ensure that fire suppression systems are always fully operational with no accidental discharge ensuring business continuity for companies who operate in these environments. Due to the sophistication of the system, for example with an RS232/485 computer interface it allows a computer operator in the control room to call up cylinder numbers 21 and 623 to check what the live levels actually are. With this level of awareness it was necessary to add a complex data logging system in order to record on a 24/7 basis. The Multiplex system is designed to be user friendly so that the on-site maintenance team
www.ind-safety.com
can quickly identify and rectify any issues. As an example of this, each module has a set of green and red LED lights that act as a local display and allow the maintenance team to go into a room and identify which cylinders have issues quickly and easily. One of the key development issues that had to be overcome was how to mount the sensors in such a way that they will not be dislodged by somebody walking past. Once achieved, it was then possible to guarantee a maintenance program to ensure those sensors are working properly. It was obviously essential to work closely with the in-house maintenance team to ensure that a maintenance program was put together they could understand and implement. The system is designed to be as user friendly as possible, and accuracy is a major driver. The Multiplex system has industry leading accuracy figures of +/–1.5mm, which helps to ensure that facilities are protected and safe. Historically, downtime when performing maintenance checks on a system was an issue particularly in high risk environments such as offshore oil & gas because of the risks involved in shutting the system down. With Coltraco’s equipment an otherwise 30-minute to 60-minute job of dismantling, weighing and reinstalling a cylinder takes 30 seconds to 60 seconds with a Portalevel unit , but using Permalevel Multiplex even this aspect is made redundant, as it is monitoring the cylinder 24/7/365. As an example of the safety risks involved in the maintenance of fixed fire suppression systems, on the 23rd May 2010 the general-purpose oilfield support vessel Marsol Pride was conducting underwater operations within the Tui oil and gas field off the west coast of New Zealand. Marsol Pride was fitted with a fixed carbon dioxide fire smothering system for its engine room. Late that night a valve on one of the CO2 pilot cylinders
developed a leak and charged the system ready for release. A second leak in the main control valve then caused the entire system to activate resulting in an uncontrolled release of CO2 gas into the engine room. An automatic alarm in the engine room had warned the duty engineer of the impending release, so he had left the engine room to investigate the reason for the alarm. The incident caused one of the two main propulsion engines to shut down due to air starvation; other than that there was no damage to the vessel and no one was injured. An uncontrolled or inadvertent activation of an engine room fixed CO2 gas fire smothering system is a serious event because the CO2 gas displaces any air in the space so that it cannot sustain human life, and it can immobilise the ship’s propulsion and generator systems at a critical part of an operation. The lessons learned from this incident were: any component in a fixed CO2 gas fire-fighting installation, the failure of which can cause serious harm or immobilise a vessel, should be inspected and tested often enough to detect any deterioration in performance so that remedial action can be taken to avert a failure; additionally, the conditions under which control valves or any other com - ponent in a fixed CO2 system are tested should be the same as or greater than the normal operating conditions for the system. A safety recommendation was made to the Director for Maritime New Zealand to forward this report to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) & the International Association of Classification Societies. The aim was so that they could draw on the lessons learned from this incident and consider amending the current guidelines that currently suggest an inspection of control valves only once every five years. As another example of the risks involved in the maintaining of fixed

fire suppression systems, just over a year later in August 2011, a shore-based service engineer was seriously injured while testing components of the tug SD Nimble’s fixed carbon dioxide extinguishing system. Six cylinders where accidentally discharged after the tug had slipped her berth at Her Majesty’s Naval base in Falsane Scotland. This led to the depletion of oxygen levels in the cylinder room following the accidental discharge. The engineer quickly lost consciousness and the tug was manoeuvred back to her berth so that the engineer could be removed to the open deck where cardio pulmonary resuscitation was started. The engineer was subsequently transferred to hospital where he made a full recovery. These two separate incidents show the dangers involved in maintaining fixed fire suppression systems. In particular the Marsol Pride was com - pliant with IMO requirements. This illustrates why companies that operate in high risk environments specify Permalevel Multiplex™. Having an automatic monitoring system reduces the risk when maintaining fixed fire suppression systems and makes sure they are monitored more regularly than required by the IMO. This system allows its users to operate with much less downtime than they would previously have had to factor in, allowing them to optimise profits against downtime and doing so in a safe environment. This system, as outlined, is aimed at companies that operate in industries that have identified the risks involved in the environments in which they operate and can justify the expenditure of using a system that monitors their fixed fire suppression

system 24/7 365 days a year. We believe the industry as a whole needs to move away from the idea that having fire suppression system checked once a year is adequate. That leaves a probability of 364 that the fire suppression system will lose integrity over the course of the year. What we have seen in the past however is that where industries, such as offshore oil and gas lead from a safety perspective other industries follow in time. We understand that a system such as Permalevel Multiplex is not suitable for everybody, but it can be used to help educate the industry further as to why monitoring and checking a system more frequently than currently required is good for business continuity. It ensures that the fire protection system has full integrity should the worst happen and it is needed to put out a fire. To conclude, as companies are forced to operate ever further from home and in more challenging environments where help may be two or three days away, it is vitally important to have a fire suppression system that they are confident will be effective. By using a system such as Permalevel Multiplex they are ensuring the integrity of their systems and can have confidence in it if the worst happens and the fire suppression system is needed. By monitoring the system continuously 365 days a year 24/7 it enables workers to have full confidence in their safety and ensures business continuity. Over time, this may be one of the key drivers behind the industry moving forward in terms of the testing and maintenance of fixed fire suppression systems. In an ideal world rather than it being acceptable to have your system checked once a year it will be checked maybe once a quarter. Omega Seguridad prefers thermal imaging cameras for perimeter protection of solar parks.
Spanish security specialist Omega Seguridad has already secured over 20 solar parks across Spain and its neighboring countries. The company always tries to convince its customers to install thermal imaging cameras for perimeter protection and surveillance projects. And this is exactly what happened for a solar park surveillance project in Sebis, Romania.
O
MEGA GROUP, based in Sevilla, Spain, offers a comprehensive range of surveillance and security services, including the installation and maintenance of systems and equipment for intrusion and fire detection, CCTV, access control, etc. One of the company’s main areas of expertise is perimeter protection of solar parks. As an increasingly important provider of electricity across the globe, solar parks need to be effectively secured. The threats these installations face are the same as for any other energy producing facility: vandalism, sabotage and terrorism. Based on a proven track record for perimeter protection projects across Spain, Omega Seguridad has also been able to offer its expertise to

solar park projects in other European countries like Portugal, France, Italy and Romania.
Solar park surveillance project in Romania For a new solar park, located in Sebis, Arad, Romenia, Omega Seguridad installed 22 thermal imaging cameras for perimeter surveillance purposes. The new park is the country’s largest and also one of the largest parks in Europe. The park has been developed by Bester Generación, a leader in the renewable energy market, specialized in the promotion, construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructures for the production of clean energy. It stretches across 200 hectares and includes some 72,000

photovoltaic panels, amounting to 15 MW of power. The new solar park is said to ensure the need of energy for around 100,000 people. The total perimeter, including two separate confined areas of approximately 2,1 km, could be covered with a total number of 22 cameras. On average, this amounts to approximately 1 thermal camera per 190 meters.
SR series For this particular project, Omega Seguridad relied on FLIR’s SR series of surveillance cameras, offering high quality thermal imaging in any nightor daytime environmental conditions. More specifically they chiefly used the SR-313 camera with 35 mm lens

allows the cameras to look at night for a certain distance. Antonio Millán Fernández, project manager at Omega Seguridad, explains why his company always makes an extra effort to convince the customer to choose thermal imaging cameras: “Thermal cameras can see much farther than traditional CCTV cameras and therefore you need less of them. So in short: less cameras, less issues.”
Smaller investment for thermal imaging The SR-Series cameras provide high contrast imagery optimized to get the most out of video analytics and 320 x 240 resolution, next to the SR-324 camera with 19 mm lens and 320 x 240 resolution. The SR-Series of security cameras provide high contrast imagery optimized to get the most out of video analytics software. In this case, video analytics was provided by Spanish company Davantis.
Surveillance technologies Omega Seguridad usually offers two options for perimeter protection to its customers: CCTV cameras and thermal imaging cameras. Although traditional CCTV systems are effective for security and surveillance applications, they are not able to see in total darkness. As a result, they have to be complemented with additional lighting, which again
Thermal imaging cameras need no lighting equipment whatsoever and will operate with the same accuracy duringnight and day.
120 | NOVEMBER 2013 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
Although a thermal camera is still more expensive than a visual video camera, the investment cost for perimeter surveillance will still be lower, since you need fewer camera units. Fewer cameras also means that there will be less required investments for all camera-related equipment (meaning: all equipment that is needed to get the camera operating properly and to get the video signal onto the control room screen). All these added costs need to be made per camera unit. By reducing the number of required cameras, thermal imaging allows customers to make significant savings with the camera-related equipment and civil works. On top of that, thermal imaging cameras need no lighting equipment whatsoever and will operate with the same accuracy during night and day. Last but not least, Omega Seguridad calculated that the overall power consumption of a project with traditional CCTV systems is about 50% higher than the power consumption of a project with thermal cameras. This is a considerable saving on the electricity bill of the end user. “For distances between 60 and 120 meters that would require 2 conventional cameras, but only one thermal camera, the cost of equipment involved on both systems would be equivalent,” comments Enrique Delgado Torres, engineer and project manager at Omega Seguridad. “For distances between 120 and 180 meters where 3 conventional cameras would
The total perimeter, including two separate confined areas of approximately 2,1 km, could be covered with a total number of 22 cameras
be required, the equipment associated to the thermal system becomes more economical. Longer distances will make the advantage bigger.” “The more bends and curves a perimeter has, the more camera positions you will need to have a sufficiently good view,” comments Vicente Nanclares Ocio, director of the engineering department. “Luckily for us, solar parks generally tend to have straight shapes, so this allows thermal cameras to see even farther than 180 meters.”
Better performance with thermal imaging The lower overall investment is not the only reason why Omega Seguridad prefers thermal imaging for the Sebis project in Romania. Thermal cameras also have a higher accuracy and they generate fewer false alarms, which ultimately results in less frustration and less workload for the control room operator. “Obviously, we no longer experience lightrelated false alarms,” comments Vicente Nanclares Ocio. “Sometimes, car headlights can set off false alarms, but since thermal cameras are unaffected by light, they are also not disturbed by it.” “Thermal cameras also allow us to see better through fog. Sometimes, the fog can be so dense that traditional CCTV cameras are unable to see through it.” For more information, FLIR Systems India 1111, D Mall, Netaji Subhash Place, Pitampura, New Delhi-110034 TeL: 011-45603555 Email : flirindia@flir.com.hk Web: www.flir.com

Migration to IPv6 Why IPv6
About Author Kiron Kunte has over 35 years of design and solutions experience, in Security, Telephony and Networking infrastructure. He is a graduate of IIT Bombay, a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers and has a post-graduate diploma, from Bombay University, in Systems Management. He is professionally certified in the design and engineering of Data Centres, IP Telephony, Video surveillance and Structured Cabling solutions. He heads Norik Konsult, a practice that offers advisory, design and system planning help to upgrade or build a new Telephony, Security and Networking infrastructure.
Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) was first published and standardized by the IETF in 1981, as RFC 791. The Internet and most network communications are based on this protocol. There are billions of potential IP addresses. In 1981, there were 200 Internet sites. In 1992, the number of connected hosts had reached 1 million. In 2002, the number of Internet users worldwide exceeded 613 million, and the number of assigned IPv4 addresses approached 2.5 billion. The number of internet users as of mid- 2012 exceeded 2400 million. The growth in connected users and devices is exponential. Migration to IPv6 is a necessity.
IPv6 Addressing IPv6 has 128-bit address space, which provides additional addresses. The first 64 bits represent the prefix field while the second 64 bits represent the interface ID.
Prefix The first 64 bits (4 fields) represent the prefix fields. The prefix denotes the type of address and where a unit is connected (registry, ISP, site, subnet). It is derived in a hierarchical fashion. There are several address types:
• Unicast • Multicast • Anycast. Unicast (one-to-one) addresses may be global, link local, unique local, special, or compatible. Unicast global addresses are conventional publicly routable IP addresses, whose prefix designation is administered by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). The assignable global unicast address space is the address block defined by the prefix 2000::/3. Unicast link local addresses are designed to be used for addressing on a single link for purposes such as automatic address configuration or neighbour discovery, or when no routers are present and the prefix is defined by an initial block FE80::/10 (or binary 1111 1110 10). Unicast unique local IPv6 addresses (RFC 4193) are not expected to be routable on the global internet, but routable inside a limited area such as a site or a limited set of sites. These addresses are defined by the prefix FD00::/8 or FC00::/8.

Unicast and Multicast Video Streams
Unicast special addresses cover unspecified addresses (0:0:0:0:0:0:0:0 or ::) and loopback (0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 or ::1). A multicast address (one-tomany communication) features the initial prefix FF00::/16 and is an identifier for a group of interfaces (typically on different nodes). An interface may belong to any number of multicast groups. Multicast is commonly used in CCTV applications to limit the number of network streams, based on the population of users who wish to view a given video stream. These viewers join a multicast group, which is defined by a multicast address and administered through the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP), supported in most managed switches and routers. Broadcast is achieved by multicasting to a group consisting of all addresses on the network. The figure below shows unicast and multicast operation where a video stream from a dome camera is viewed at three different locations. Unicast operation requires three separate streams in the Network. Multicast operation requires only one stream entering each router and switch.
www.ind-safety.com
An IPv6 anycast address is an address that is assigned to more than one interface (typically belonging to different nodes). A packet sent to an anycast address is routed to the nearest interface having that address. Anycast addresses are allocated from the unicast address space, using any of the defined unicast address formats. Anycast addresses cannot be distinguished from unicast addresses. The nodes to which the anycast address is assigned must be configured to know that it is an anycast address. An example of anycast would be the transmittal of an alarm from a mobile unit to the nearest responder, where the response mechanism is configured to provide general notification to other interested parties without simultaneous receipt of alarms by all potential responders. A single interface may be assigned multiple addresses of any type (unicast, multicast, anycast).
Interface IDs and Configuration Options The second 64 bits represent the interface ID. The interface ID is usually assigned using stateless or stateful auto configuration. It may also be manually assigned (static configuration). Stateless auto configuration requires no manual configuration of hosts, minimal (if any) configuration of routers, and no additional servers. The stateless mechanism allows a host to generate its own addresses using a combination of locally available information and information advertised by routers. Routers advertise prefixes that identify the subnet(s) associated with a link, while hosts generate an interface identifier that uniquely identifies an interface on a subnet. An address is formed by combining the two. In the absence of routers, a host can only generate link local addresses. However, link-local addresses are sufficient for allowing communication among nodes attached to the same link.

TECH UPDATE
Stateless autoconfiguration allows networks to create their own IP addresses and to check for address duplication, but it takes some of the control away from the network administrator and may enable the misuse of network resources. This is particularly important when considering more bandwidth-intensive video appliances, where CCTV cameras could be placed on the network without consideration of proper network configuration for bandwidth control or user access privileges. In case of stateful autoconfiguration, the hosts obtain interface addresses and/or configuration information and parameters from a server. Servers maintain a database that keeps track of which addresses have been assigned to which hosts. The stateful autoconfiguration protocol allows hosts to obtain addresses, other configuration information, or both from a server. Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCPv6) supports stateful autoconfiguration. Stateless autoconfiguration should make it easier to deploy surveillance-only networks.
Address Form Each address is in the form x:x:x:x:x:x:x:x /prefix length where x is a16-bit (2-byte) field (4 hexadecimal symbols) and prefix-length is a decimal value specifying how many of the Further, the addressing protocol allows leading zeros to be dropped and consecutive zero fields can be abbreviated by double colons (::): For example, the address 2001:0DB8:C003:0001:0000: 0000:0000:F00D can be simplified to 2001:DB8:C003:1:0:0:0:F00D and then to 2001:DB8:C003:1::F00D
Tunneling As IPv6 is being phased in, a significant portion of the existing infrastructure will remain until IPv4 is phased out. IPv6 packets can be tunnelled over IPv4 networks by encapsulating the IPv6 data in an IPv4 packet with the use of an IPv4 header, effectively
124 | NOVEMBER 2013 | INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW
making the IPv6 header and payload invisible to the IPv4 equipment.
Information Security One of the main objectives in IPv6 is to provide an enhanced level of network security that is embedded into the standard, as opposed to the add-on security features that IPv4 required. Security features developed for IPv6 are known as IP Security (IPsec). IPsec has been developed upon cryptography and Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technologies. IPSec is not a protocol in itself; rather it is a protocol suite that enables authentication, confidentiality, integrity, and anti-replay protection between systems. It does not authenticate users; it authenticates devices. Additionally, IPSec can filter out what communication a device will accept or specify what requirements are necessary to establish a connection between devices. The final feature that IPSec offers is VPN functionality.
Caveat IPsec features embedded in IPv6 do not automatically achieve robust security. While certain threats are mitigated, the opportunity for new threats has increased. Once a computer is attached to the IPSecbased network, all of the additional devices attached to that local network might also be able to gain access across the WAN to the corporate network. It is therefore possible that a worm on the any computer could easily spread to shared drives on the corporate network. In other words, any vulnerability that exists at the IP layer in the remote network could be passed to the corporate network across the IPSec tunnel. Another disadvantage is that if working off-site, connecting to one’s own company network may be difficult if not impossible due to restrictions in most corporate firewalls.

Fast Response from Fike Fire System Saves Lives
S
Fire Damage caused to the Kitchen area
www.ind-safety.com
ignificant structural fire damage and potential loss of life have been avoided following the fast and orderly evacuation of a block of 5 apartments in Blackpool, UK, following a fire. One of the tenants returned home after a night out and prepared some food. They then fell asleep and the kitchen area caught fire. The Fike TWINFLEX smart 2-wire fire detection system instantly raised the alarm and its powerful alarm confirmation facilities ensured a fast and safe evacuation of all the tenants before the escape route became compromised. The fire brigade arrived in time to put out the fire before significant damage was caused to the rest of the building. The fire detection system was designed and installed by DD Fire Alarms, a company specialising in providing dependable and cost effective alarm systems for houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) and hotels. The TWINFLEX control panel is mounted in the entrance hall and is connected to 26 Multipoint detectors, which are installed in the 5 apartments and communal areas. Each Multipoint detector can be configured to any one of 7 detection modes, allowing it to be closely matched to its surrounding environment. In the case of this apartment block, the detectors in the dwellings were set to low-sensitivity smoke to reduce false alarms, apart from the kitchen area, where the detector was set to heat mode. The smoke detectors in the communal areas were set to a higher sensitivity, allowing for a faster response. In addition to multiple detection modes, each Multipoint detector can include an integral 90db sounder, further increasing the
flexibility and reducing the installation costs of the system. “The building is wired on separate zones with alarm confirmation delays programmed so the alarm in the rest of the building is only raised if there is a genuine fire in one of the flats,” said Darren Johnson, Managing Director of DD Fire Alarms. “This ensures false alarms are all but eliminated. In fact in the two years the Fike TWINFLEX system has been installed there has only been one false alarm and that was from a tenant activating a manual call point.” The alarm confirmation technology built into the TWINFLEX panel has proved to be very popular with HMOs. Zones are designated either Dwellings or Communal. The system has the ability to set a prealarm for dwellings, allowing time to investigate the cause of the activation before evacuating the building. This can be programmed between 1 to 5 minutes. Activation in a communal area will initiate a full alarm immediately. When a fire is detected in a dwelling only the local (room) sounder will operate during the alarm verification period to warn the occupants within that particular dwelling. If the detector is still generating an alarm signal after the configured pre-alarm time, the control panel will instantly sound all alarms in the building for full evacuation. This approach ensures safe evacuation in the event of a real fire, as demonstrated here, but doesn’t cause disruption from false alarms.
