CEO CORNER Access Control : The need of hour Physical and logical security in manufacturing plants and other industrial firms is a pressing and persistent concern. Controlling access to and within the site and protecting information and automation systems from breaches is essential. Physical or digital security lapses, whether accidental or malicious, can cause significant damage, particularly when it harms personnel, the equipment or environment, or impacts quality. Technology advancements and the emergence of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) have introduced a host of new opportunities to control activities and equipment inside the four walls of the plant, but they also produce a bevy of new access points and more data. Now building automation systems often are driven by programmable automation controllers (PACs) and use a human-machine interface (HMI) for configuration, notifications and routine control. With these systems growing in number and increasingly interconnected, PAC and HMI access control becomes an imperative. Modernizing and layering legacy access control methods, such as the ever-present employee badge, can be a sound and economical approach to protecting production processes, data and assets. Considering that nearly everyone entering a locked facility has to present a security badge of some sort to gain entry, why not apply this same concept — and smart technology — to security concerns inside the building? Badge-based authentication is faster, and it eliminates errors associated with manual password entry. For example, in situations where a supervisor periodically helps an operator, a badge-based access solution would prevent the operator from re-using the supervisor’s username and password, avoiding intentional misuse or errors. The ability to use existing employee ID badges or key security devices (FOBs) with readers provides a desirable and cost-effective solution. Growing interconnectedness and the ability to standardize access control are revealing opportunities for risk management that weren’t previously viable. Increasingly, access controls are becoming an important element of quality control policies. Hence access control plays pivotal role in securing your assets and become the need of hour of every business.

International safety awards 2018 are launched The British Safety Council’s International Safety Awards are an internationally recognised accolade for safety excellence. The Awards, in their 60th year in 2018, celebrate organisations that go the extra mile to keep their workers and workplaces healthy and safe. The awards will open for applications on 3 October to organisations of all sizes, types and sectors – both members of the British Safety Council and non-members, in the UK and internationally. The International Safety Awards 2018 will recognise and reward organisations which have demonstrated a true commitment to achieving high standards of health and safety during the 2017 calendar year. Last year, 535 organisations from a wide range of industries, countries and continents won an International Safety Award.
New Awards: Employee Wellbeing Initiative and Health and Safety Innovation Awards For the first time, organisations can apply for two new awards which are designed to recognise and celebrate employee wellbeing initiatives and occupational health and safety innovations implemented by organisations across the world. The Employee Wellbeing Initiative Award will recognise and reward organisations that have implemented initiatives that promote and demonstrate a proactive and effective approach to improving worker wellbeing. to better staff engagement and productivity and benefit both employees and society more widely. We are also very pleased to introduce the Health and Safety Innovation Award that will reward businesses going the extra mile to improve health and safety of their workers.”
Individual Health and Safety Champion Awards The British Safety Council is again running two awards to recognise individual employees who have gone beyond the call of duty to help ensure the health and safety of their colleagues. The Health and Safety Champion of the Year Award – for non-health and safety personnel aged 24 or over – and the Young Health and Safety Champion of the Year Award – for non-health and safety personnel aged under 24 – allow organisations to nominate individual employees who have given their time to improve health, safety and wellbeing at work. This year, for the first time, any organisation can enter its employees for the Champion Awards – whether or not the business is applying for an International
Safety Award.

Ador Powertron embarks on ambitious growth plans
Mr. Somnath Singha, MD, Ador Powertron Ltd.
The Pune-based Ador Powertron Ltd., a part of the Ador Group, is on a growth trajectory. The company formed in 1986 absorbing the power electronics division hived off by Ador Welding, thrived on two major products namely High Voltage Rectifiers and High Current Rectifiers. HVR and HCR found their applications in electrostatic precipitators used in power plants. Thus the company’s focus became more pronounced in clean air systems. No wonder the company is using the base-line ‘Peace of Mind’ in all its communications
16
defining the benefit it offers to its customers at large. “‘Peace of Mind’ is what you get when you use Ador products, says Somnath Singha, the effervescent Managing Director of Ador Powertron, which has added three more product groups to its portfolio. One is Security Systems comprising CCTVs and UPS. These products are meant for the safety and security of people and buildings alike. Ador’s foray in to the Traffic Business came as a natural corollary. This again was within the ambit of safety to bring peace of mind and safety on Indian roads. Its Variable Message Signs jetting out on highways caution rash drivers. Under Traffic, Ador has introduced Crash Barriers or Rollers which are placed in accident prone turns. These are designed to withstand multiple pressures and hits. These barriers prevent the vehicles from toppling and save the lives of drivers. Attenuators on trucks or vehicles alert the drivers and

help them to be extra cautious. The fourth division of of the company offers products & systems which are strategic and help in intelligent border management. The high range cameras help in electronic surveillance of the border spanning 5 km from the control room, thus obviating manual patrolling. The company also supplies mill grade UPS systems for power back-up. The modular UPS, either solar or normal type, cater to power banks. “We also supply critical power sources for warfare,” states Somnath Singha.
Quantum Leap The turnover of the company which was hovering at around Rs.40 crores in previous years soared to Rs.90 crores last year. “We are now growing at a rate of 50-60% year on year. And if everything goes well, we must achieve a turnover in the vicinity of Rs.350 crores in the next 5 years,” declares Somnath Singha in quiet optimism. When asked as to what are the steps being taken to achieve this goal, the MD has this to add: “In terms of infrastructure, we are fully geared. We have two modern plants in Pune.
You Install. You Maintain. You Relax. With a host of innovative features, approvals and an open protocol, our fire detection equipment gives you total peace of mind.
Hochiki is one of the best fire detection system we have used; very robust and strong. Plus, Hochiki has a complete range of products to cater to all kinds of detection needs. We would definitely recommend Hochiki products. SANJAY JAIN, DIRECTOR AT SPACE OFFICE SYSTEMS (I) PVT LTD, MUMBAI, INDIA

For manufacturing clean air systems, our existing production set-up has enough capacity. Our Traffic Division is just eight months old. For this Division, we are shortly installing the latest production equipment including a Robotic System sourced from Japan, Europe and China. Similarly, for Security Systems, we are getting sophisticated manufacturing tables, test equipment, etc. from Japan, Taiwan and Korea. We shall also go in for additional qualified manpower to work in sync with these systems. Ador Powertron has a workforce of 135 people as of now – a seasoned and dedicated lot who are trained to excel in everything they do. The veterans work shoulder to shoulder with the new generation people who are found to be a bit impatient for everything,” says Singha. “Since we are in high tech manufacturing and in the niche market, 90% of our people are engaged in product development and manufacturing. The remaining 10% is looking after sales & service. The industry norm is in the ratio of 60:40.”
Growth Strategies As part of the growth strategy, Ador Powertron is embarking
18
on new technologies, increasing product-lines, using Internet of Things (IoT) to make systems talk to each other, and QR codes are embedded to help talk to the system to ascertain the specifications and history of service or maintenance requirement. Ador’s clean air products are going to power plants, state electricity boards and direct customers like L & T, NTPC, Alstom, etc. Clean air is a steady and established business for the company with a market share of 63%. Ador Security products are going partly to the Government and partly to direct customers like L&T, Wipro, HFCL, Sterlite, etc. The company’s Traffic products are mainly B2B. L&T and Mahindra & Mahindra are some of the major customers.
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | OCTOBER 2017
Ador Powertron is said to be the only manufacturer in India having all the relevant international certifications including UL, CE, ROHS, EN, etc. The Defence products are of course exclusively B2G. The company is also exporting its clean air products to some 74 countries across the globe. “Today we are in a unique position where others are benchmarking us for quality and reliability,” reveals Singha. The company is very strong in understanding the customer requirements and in subsequence product development, manufacturing, quality assurance and operational efficiency. It is also strong in value engineering. The company considers people as its major asset.
The company is quite upbeat about its new product lines namely Security, Traffic and Defence which are hitched to growth driven markets. The smart cities and infrastructure development programs initiated by the Government are expected to give a new fillip to the company’s business. “The business dynamics and environments are changing fast. We have to adjust ourselves to these changing scenarios and also keep pace with the emerging trends in technologies. Like in the country, in an organization too leadership is everything. Thought process should be on. Human assets should be managed well. People have to be mentored and transformed in to champions. We must indulge more in engaging customers by giving the right solutions, we have to develop a strong vendor base and supply chain, and finally we have to keep all stakeholders happy,” remarks the managing director. – P.K. Axis introduces network radar technology for accurate area detection Axis Communications, the market leader in network video, introduces its new AXIS D2050-VE Network Radar Detector. Radar technology is used for accurate and reliable area detection of moving objects in a variety of light and weather conditions. It is a good complement to cameras with video motion detection and can be used to track moving objects with PTZ cameras. Radar also allows for a wide area to be covered whilst thermal cameras are more suitable for long perimeter protection. Developed primarily for mediumsized industrial installations, the product is designed to integrate with Axis cameras and video management systems (VMS) – in addition to surveillance systems and VMS from other major vendors. Vandal-proof and suitable for outdoor use, AXIS D2050-VE can deliver real-time information about the position, speed, angle, and size of a moving object. With a longer range than passive infrared sensors, it covers a wide field of detection, while minimizing the number of false alarms triggered by spiders, small animals, moving
shadows and light reflections. The radar motion detector can be set to trigger camera recording, activate a horn speaker, or switch on a light for deterrence and improved visibility on camera. Axis’ network radar detector can be used as a standalone product or as part of a surveillance system. Thanks to its open interface, it is compatible with Axis cameras and can be easily integrated with Axis Camera Station and Axis Camera Management software – as well as other video management systems – for straightforward management and maintenance.
“Radar closes a gap as it offers good area coverage, detects movement with high accuracy, and reduces false alarms” explains Andres Vigren, Global Product Manager, Axis Communications. “Compared to simple motion detectors, AXIS D2050-VE provides additional information of detected objects which allows for auto tracking with Axis PTZ cameras. Customers can now easily add proven radar technology to their existing or new surveillance systems to protect their premises”. Axis’ first detector with network radar technology, AXIS D2050-VE is an affordable wall-mounted detector primarily designed for outdoor use with a wide detection coverage of 120 degrees and 50 meters (164 feet). It is powered by Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) for simple installation and has IP66, IK08 and NEMA 4X ratings for tough environments. The detector can be operated in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 60°C (-40 to 140°F). AXIS D2050-VE will be available in October 2017 through Axis’ distribution channels.

Q. What are the various security related products that you offer?
Mr. Balaji K Bhoovarahan, CEO KERN Care, Chennai
Q. In your opinion, what is the state of security industry in India and what is the trend you see in the space? Security industry in India is in its nascent stage of development. Being one of the fastest growing economy, calls for more effective and dependable security systems that are foolproof and reliable over physical security. Given the size and extent of security issues in India has led to the rise of multiple technologies to create a comprehensive solution to meet the needs. Overwhelmingly, we witness, a lot of Made in India Security and Surveillance Electronic Products and Solutions vendors bringing state of the art of solutions.
Q. Which market are you targeting? We typically focus on individual needs of safety and security solutions. Our major target segments are Children, Elderly and Women. We have very specific products to cater to the various segments at various walks of life. Moreover, we focus on safety issues at office, factory and other extraordinary work places (like Mines, etc.). Our expertise lies

The various security products we offer include CCTV, RF Products, Long range Wi-Fi, Networking Products and Solutions, Wireless Video Monitoring, Remote Surveillance Systems, Border Security Products, Vehicle and Personal GPS Tracking, Wearable Sensors, Biometric and Access Control Devices, Peephole Viewers, Video Monitors, Pepper Spray, Stun Gun, Personal Alarms, Knuckles, Smash Sensors, etc.
Q. What is the advantage of Matrix products vis-à-vis the competition? Matrix is a SUBSTANCE brand. Substance is in the DNA of Matrix solutions. Substance in the form of technology, depth, genuineness and going beyond the mere outer façade and offer more values in all the areas. This is what differentiates Matrix from the lot. Matrix solutions are packed with ‘More’. More productivity, more applications, more flexibility, more functions, more features, more cost saving, more reliability and more support. Matrix positioning is based on offering more of these true inherent values, which customers expect from infrastructure solutions.
Q. What is your marketing and channel strategy? We have employed two strategies when it comes to marketing. We heavily focus on digital marketing, especially for reaching out to corporate personnel for promoting our products - right from email marketing to Google ad words. We also have a strong, direct selling front to take our solutions to the customers’ door step. We tied up with system integrators across various regions to promote and integrate our
product into their solution.
Q. What is your support strategy? We have a centralized support center, based out of Chennai to meet the service and support needs. Typically, for service, we replace the product if it is under the warranty period, get it repaired and keep it in the pool for service needs. If not in warranty, we give a promise of one week turn-around time. In terms of support personnel, we have tied up with integrators who could deploy their personnel based on the expertise required.
Q. What are the challenges that you are currently facing in India? First of all, the market is in its infancy, the customer education and awareness takes an important role. Market leaders like Matrix are making a wave in communicating various products and solutions and how they help solving the customer safety issues. But the market is cluttered with products that do not meet required quality standards but only compete on prices. Unless the customers know what technology could offer its best, it is difficult to overcome cost comparatives on technology solutions.
Q. What kind of plans and expectations do you have for this segment this year? We believe, in addition to B2C, B2B will be the biggest contributor for Security Solutions. Globalization has not only brought in opportunities but also international practices on keeping the premise and employees secure and safe. This calls for an additional investment in security solutions and also upgrade from their rudimentary traditional solutions that does not meet with their growing needs. This is the segment, we believe, the next decade of development is going to come from.

Hogarth worldwide extends Quantum StorNext environment to accommodate rapid growth and collaboration needs Quantum Corp. (NYSE: QTM) announced that Hogarth Worldwide, a fast-growing global marketing implementation agency, has enhanced its StorNext®-powered storage environment with an Xcellis® workflow storage system, including QXS™ high-performance disk. Providing independent performance and capacity scaling — as well as low-cost, long-term content preservation — the end-to-end storage solution has enabled Hogarth to maintain a highly efficient and collaborative production operation as its business continues to grow around the world.
Remarkable Growth Demands Swift Scalability Working closely with ad departments in major corporations and with creative agencies, Hogarth produces advertising and other marketing communications content across all media and all languages. The agency relies on StorNext to support efficient delivery of high-quality services including broadcast, print and digital production, postproduction, CGI and language localization. “One constant since Hogarth’s early days has been Quantum’s StorNext,” said Nick Wood, production systems manager at Hogarth. “We started converting Xsan environments to StorNext very early to take advantage of its flexibility, performance and scale, and it enabled our teams to collaborate on projects while working on any platform — Mac, Linux or Windows. Today, 12 of our offices already have full StorNext environments installed. “With StorNext, we know we can quickly add disk capacity for an office if the workload sees a surge, and we can expand

the system almost instantaneously to add more workstations. We’ve had to do that — expand from five or six workstations to 40 for a big project — and StorNext makes it easy.” While Hogarth’s technical infrastructure and workflow have helped it to become one of the world’s top postproduction houses, rapid growth — a doubling of its staff in the past year — and the frequent need to scale up quickly to handle increasingly data-intensive projects necessitated an expansion of its StorNext foundation.
StorNext Powers Flexible End-toEnd Workflow Working with Quantum and integratorpartner Trams, Hogarth recently upgraded its environment with a StorNext-powered Xcellis workflow storage solution. The new Xcellis system not only allows the agency to scale performance and capacity independently but also supports use of network-attached storage (NAS) as part of the storage pool. The actual transition to Xcellis took just a couple of hours, with no impact on the work or experience of Hogarth’s production teams.
Reliability, Performance and Flexibility Fuel Efficiencies Within the StorNext environment, Hogarth has been able to leverage its existing investments across Mac, Linux and Windows platforms while taking advantage of multiple storage tiers to optimize its use and expansion of both storage performance and capacity. Safety in Welding By S.K. Palit, Head-CCC & Strategic Support - Equipment, SGP & WAPS, Ador Welding Ltd.
S
afety is a critical consideration for any welding project. Arc welding is a safe occupation when proper precautions are taken. But, if safety measures are ignored, welders face an array of hazards which can be potentially dangerous, including electric shock, fumes and gases, fire and explosions and more. Welders are members of an occupational group which is exposed to a number of different environmental problems: • Electricity • Electromagnetic fields • UV, IR and visible light radiation • Air pollution • Fire and Spatter • Noise • Ergonomics To help keep welders safe, organizations such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offer safety guidelines to help control, minimize or to help employers and workers avoid welding hazards. Employers should ensure all workers have an opportunity to comply with the following important guidelines in the workplace: • Read and understand manufacturer instructions for equipment • Carefully review material safety data sheets
64
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | OCTOBER 2017
It’s important to remember to never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or welding clothing and insulate yourself from the work and ground.
• Follow the company’s internal safety practices • Awareness of the most common welding hazards and knowing how to avoid them ensures a safe, productive work environment for all.
Electric shock Electric shock is one of the most serious and immediate risks facing a welder. Electric shock can lead to severe injury or death, either from the shock itself or from a fall caused by the reaction to a shock. Electric shock occurs when welders touch two metal objects that have a voltage between them, thereby inserting themselves into the electrical circuit. For instance, if a worker holds a bare wire in one hand and a second bare wire with another, electric current will pass through that wire and through the welding operator, causing an electric shock. The higher the voltage, the higher the current and, thus the higher the risk for the electric shock to result in injury or death. The most common type of electric shock is secondary voltage shock from an arc welding circuit, which ranges from 20 to 100 volts. Bear in mind that even a shock of 50 volts or less can be enough to injure or kill an operator, depending on the conditions. Due to its constant change in
polarity, alternating current (AC) voltage is more likely to stop the heart than direct current (DC) welders. It is also more likely to make the person holding the wire unable to let go. To avoid secondary voltage shock, welding operators should wear dry gloves in good condition, never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or wet clothing and be sure to insulate themselves from the work and ground, keeping dry insulation between their body and the metal being welded or ground (such as a metal floor or wet surface). ADOR Welding Limited (AWL) offers a wide range of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), like Welding Gloves, Safety Shoes and other safety products to ensure the welders’ safety. In addition, AWL offers VRD (Voltage Reducing Device) as a built-in feature as an option, and also VRD Units which can be fitted externally to any AC or DC SMAW Welding machine, which keeps the secondary voltage down to a safe level of 18-20 V when no welding is being done (machine switched on, but in idle condition). Full welding power is automatically enabled whenever the welder strikes the welding arc. An even more serious shock, primary voltage shock, may occur when a welder touches electrically “hot” or “live” parts inside the welder case or the electric distribution system to which the welder is connected. This action can lead to a shock of 230 or 415 volts. AWL offers ELCB as an option in their welding machines to completely eliminate this hazard.
Fumes and gases Overexposure to welding fumes and gases can be hazardous to the health of the welder as well as any other person who is working in the vicinity of the welding area. Welding fume contains potentially harmful

complex metal oxide compounds from consumables, base metal and the basemetal coatings, so it is important to keep the head out of the fumes and use enough ventilation and/or exhaust to control the exposure to substances in the fume, depending on the type of rod and base metal being used. The specific potential health effects which relate to the welding consumable product being used can be found in the Health Hazard Data section of the Safety Data Sheet available from the consumable manufacturer. Welding areas require adequate ventilation and local exhaust to keep fumes and gases from the breathing zone and the general area. In most situations, a ventilation system- such as a fan, and an exhaust system or fixed or removable exhaust hoods- to remove fumes and gases from the work area are provided. AWL has introduced in their range different models of Welding Fume extraction systems, both stand-alone as well as centralized systems (KING EXTRACTORS), with advanced technology, special filters and with or without built-in compressors
Fire and explosions Welding arc creates extreme temperatures, and may pose a significant fire and
68
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | OCTOBER 2017
explosions hazard if safe practices are not followed. While the welding arc may reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the real danger is not from the arc itself, but rather the intense near the arc and the heat, sparks and spatter created by the arc. This spatter can reach up to 35 feet away from the welding space. To prevent fires, before beginning to weld, inspect the work area for any flammable materials and remove them from the area. Flammable materials are comprised of three categories: liquid, such as gasoline, oil and paint; solid, such as wood, cardboard and paper; gas, including acetylene, propane and hydrogen.
Ergonomics When welding heavy material manually
Special attachments and extensions to interconnection cables reduce welder fatigue for welding at long distances from the Power Source
Rotators are used to rotate a job with circular or cylindrical profile to help the welder consistently without changing his position and welding torch angle continuously
and during assembly welding the loads are very static. Positioning welding also gives high loads. Ergonomic control of Welder’s position, arrangement of rotating tables (rotators and turn tables) is important to reduce welder fatigue and chances of poor weld quality.
Other safety considerations Welders should also be aware of other safety considerations within the work environment. For example, those working in a confined space or in an elevated area make need to take extra precautions. In any welding situation, welding operators should pay close attention safety information on the products being used and the material safety data sheets provided by the manufacturer and work with their employer and co-workers to follow appropriate safe practices for their workplace. Good common sense is also key. If opening cans of electrode, keep hands away from sharp edges. Remove clutter and debris from the welding area to prevent tripping or falling. And never use broken or damaged equipment or PPE. To keep up with the most recent safety practices, welding operators should utilize resources from the American Welding Society (AWS), OSHA and welding manufacturers. By following these safe practices and using common sense, operators can stay safe and keep production moving with no lost-time accidents. Safety & Health Fact Sheets are provided in the ANSI Z49.1 Standards.

Small companies must take mental health more seriously Professor Dame Carol Black calls SMEs to treat mental health issues as a priority and suggests practical steps they can take to introduce a good mental health culture. Professor Dame Carol Black, British Safety Council
S
peaking to the British Safety Council, Professor Dame Carol Black, a leading expert and a passionate campaigner promoting good mental health in the workplace, urged SME (small and medium enterprise) owners and managers to get onboard with the mental health agenda. “One in four employees in the UK have mental health problems. Their symptoms include stress, anxiety and depression, which affect their own performance and wellbeing, as well as that of other workers. These are the key reasons why SMEs should start treating mental health issues as a priority,” says Professor Black. Her practical advice has been recorded by the British Safety Council in a short film, Mental Health & SMEs. “Mental health issues affect small companies to a much greater extent than larger enterprises. Due to their size and fewer resources, SMEs cannot afford to have employees not working to their full capacity,” warns Professor Carol Black. “The signs that the things are not well in a company are: poor productivity and
70

employee engagement, as well as various symptoms of stress, which express themselves in growing propensity to take sick leave, increased turnover and presentism,” she said. Professor Carol Black suggests practical steps which every company, regardless of their size and budget, can undertake to introduce a culture that promotes good mental health. “You have to train your managers in people management skills and add to this a mental health component. Then they will be able to recognise the signs when an employee becomes less well. This approach should be complemented by training at a peer-topeer level. Mental health first aid training will enable staff to provide support for their colleagues. “This approach doesn’t cost very much, although it takes time to develop. It will lead to better staff engagement and productivity, benefiting both employees, their companies and the wider society. However, it has to come from the top,” concludes Professor Black. Professor Dame Carol Black will be a
keynote speaker at the British Safety Council’s Annual Conference ‘Health and Safety: preparing for the future’ to be held on Wednesday, 4 October 2017 at The King’s Fund, London. She will address mental health issues in the workplace, using case studies to demonstrate the simple steps that can be taken to reduce the stigma and support employees. The film Mental Health & SMEs has been produced by the British Safety Council as a part of its special 60th Anniversary Supporter Offer launched in January 2017 for small organisations and charities to help them manage health, safety and environmental risks. The British Safety Council is addressing the challenges of mental health and, as a founder and supporter of the charity Mates in Mind, is focused on improving mental health of construction workers.

Dahua Thermal Imaging enables people to see a safer world
L
ike many cutting-edge technologies, thermal imaging was first developed for military use in the 1950s and 1960s when the US successfully introduced cooled infrared detectors onto missiles. Infrared detectors eventually evolved into thermal imaging technology, which has made its way into non-military applications, and is now widely used in various areas such as industrial inspections, medical diagnoses, and in satellites. An important milestone in the advancement of this technology was the invention of uncooled infrared detectors, which enabled cheaper and easier to maintain thermal imaging products to make their way to the general market for use in applications including security surveillance, forest fire prevention, and power plant monitoring. Conventional surveillance cameras are already very capable of capturing video in the daytime or in well-lit areas. However, when faced with poorly lit areas or at night, the video capturing abilities of these cameras begin to diminish as sensors must compensate for the lack of light by increasing sensitivity, thus producing a noisy image, if one is produced at all. Since clear day and night monitoring is an important benchmark in assessing a surveillance system’s effectiveness, thermal imaging devices present a clear advantage in their ability to convert heat energy into an image visible to the human eye. Leveraging its experience in camera image analysis and intelligent algorithms, Dahua Technology has developed thermal imaging devices with innovative functions that balance visible light with infrared, enabling the ability to effectively monitor an area under all lighting conditions. In addition, these functions include advanced
76
INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | OCTOBER 2017
capabilities such as intelligent temperature measurement, which further extends the scope of surveillance applications such as in detecting forest fires or quickly checking for passengers with high fevers at international airports. The following three applications demonstrate the widespread capabilities of thermal imaging:
1. Border Security Border security concerns not only the security of the country, but also the safety of citizens and their property. Traditional border monitoring systems still face many imperfections: First, a relatively small amount of patrols are employed to guard large areas, leading to partial gaps in coverage. In areas where cameras are used, there are often blind spots in their line of sight, such as tall grass or brush, or places beyond their range. Finally, when emergencies occur, responses can be slow and inefficient due to the scattered nature of guards and the need for manually sounding alarms. Dahua Technology has created a comprehensive solution to tackle the challenges of border surveillance. For example, take a 100km section of essentially unlit, wild border terrain. A thermal dome camera (TPC-SD8320) with 30x zoom can be installed every 1km. It can quickly detect objects using thermal imaging and then confirm threats using
visible light images. In this way, night monitoring difficulties can be completely overcome with infrared light. In total, just100 cameras alternately placed on both sides of the border are necessary to provide full coverage. Now, instead of a number of patrols working alone outside over a large area, a small team of workers can manage the border from a command center, which features advanced automated functions. The center is outfitted with an e-map, which shows the location and current sight line of each camera, allowing border workers to assess surveillance coverage in real-time. When a camera detects someone entering a restricted area, it will automatically trigger an alarm while continuing to track the target. Staff can then alert the intruder and warn them with sirens. If needed, a team can then be quickly dispatched to confront the intruder with help from the command center. In addition, intelligent route patrol allows operators to configure cameras to follow a set patrol route according to requirements and the terrain, decreasing the need for manual control.
2. Forest Fire Prevention With the potential of having catastrophic consequences, fires are the greatest danger to a forest. Efforts to prevent forest fires have been explored over the years, but
Dahua Thermal Cameras Installed at Borders
TECH UPDATE
Summary
Thermal Imaging in Forest Fire Prevention
several difficulties still exist - The area of the forest is disproportionately large to the limited number of patrols who move relatively slowly and are equipped with only their eyes, from which a fire source is very likely to escape detection, especially when smokeless. To effectively prevent forest fires, new technologies that can function more accurately than humans are needed. Dahua’s intelligent forest fire monitoring system automatically monitors the entire forest area, conducting intelligent patrols. If a blaze begins, the system will automatically trigger an alarm via a high precision intelligent algorithm which uses laser positioning to accurately locate the source of the fire.
3. Substation Inspection As power transmission hubs, substations must maintain a safe and stable state
at all times. Manual patrol alone is not enough since malfunctions can happen in an instant and may not be immediately detected, or a patrol may not be able to see silent breakdowns waiting to occur. Fortunately, new devices allow us to use technology in order to detect problems. Dahua has developed an intelligent substation monitoring system which provides intelligent patrol features complete with a report after each round of patrolling. In other words, it provides users with real-time information about substation equipment in a way that is much more efficient, saving time and labor. Furthermore, it allows humans and machines to work together and take advantage of their respective strengths. If the temperature of equipment or part of the station exceeds a preset limit, the system will automatically trigger an alarm alerting management.
Thermal Imaging in Substation Inspection
If it is presumed that conventional monitoring methods are sufficient enough in dealing with threats, a tremendous amount of lives and possessions would be put at risk. Cutting-edge technologies are necessary to effectively prevent and respond to threats in the shortest duration possible.
