INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

I have launched Videonetics with a patriotic mission to show the world that cutting-edge world-class products powered by Indian Intellectual Property, can be developed from India by our young minds to reduce dependency on foreign products and contribute to the nation building. I came back to India with this mission and started Videonetics. After contributing in more than 150 US and international patents while I was working in US, I recognized that our country can gain more respect and become a strong technology player in the global arena with its home-grown products with strong intellectual properties. I am not going to retire from innovation as long as my brain and body cooperates and so perpetuate this culture of innovation in my small but effective young team. Like me, my team thinks, breaths, and goes to bed every day with the thoughts of innovation. Videonetics is not just a company, it is a movement to promote the culture of innovation as mentioned above & uphold the national call for ‘Made in India’.

COVER STORY

Videonetics :

COGNITIVE HERITAGE

of innovation & growth Established in 2008, we have been developing and delivering ‘Made in India’ innovative products and solutions. Over the 10 years, a Kolkata based company has built its strong heritage of innovation and excellence in Visual Computing Platform. Today, we are the World’s first company to launch Artificial Intelligence & Deep Learning powered Unified Visual Computing Platform. Just dumping foreign technologies in our soil is not going to work effectively. To save our tax-payers money and build effective security, we must design and develop technologies based on our Indian condition. India is a great nation with a more than 1 billion population. If the technology works in our Indian demographic condition, I strongly believe that it’ll work anywhere in the world. We have to transform our nation and its economy from service-oriented to product-cum -manufacturing oriented to sustain our growth and play the role of a major player in the world.

Q. When we talk about technology uniqueness, what differentiate Videonetics in the market? Holding a leadership position in the industry, our indigenous solutions have acclaimed patents from countries like Israel, UK, USA, Singapore, Canada so on along with acknowledged by renowned awards. Recently, we have introduced AI & Deep Learning Framework enabled solutions including Intelligent VMS, Smart Urban Video Analytics, Intelligent Attribute Search, Automatic Detection of drivers driving two-wheelers without wearing helmet , Automatic detection of Triple Riding, Detection of Use of

Cell phone while Driving, No Seat Belt Detection System, Speed Violation Detection, Highway Traffic Management Software, Video Data Visualization, Smart Dashboard to name a few. Some of the unique features that make us ‘trend-setter’: 1. OS Agnostic – Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac OS 2. Truly Unified Architecture & Integrated Platform transforming mere VMS to a video computing platform 3. Robust in Tough Environmental Conditions 4. Web-enabled & Browser Agnostic 5. Indigenously developed AI and Deep learning framework to learn and adopt Indian demographic conditions

Q. How Smart City initiative is boosting the Surveillance market? Cities around the world are getting smarter. City leaders and decision makers are drawing on information and communication technologies in various ways, with advancements that improve the lives of citizens, keeping them safe, protecting their assets and enhancing their day-to-day experiences to keep pace with modern lifestyle. Today, I see surveillance application in manufacturing plants, commercial, education, critical installations, traffic management, hospitality, healthcare, retail with other verticals exploring similar solutions. The same technology, when implemented in smart city projects, reduces manual interference, predicts internal and external threats, system malfunctions and alerts authorities in times of exigencies.

As the cities grow smarter and more futuristic, video surveillance will begin to play pivotal roles in ensuring the safety of the cities, securing infrastructure and citizens. Investing in the latest video surveillance technology with not only just highest-resolution cameras, and IT infrastructure, it is of paramount of important to invest in versatile and scalable Video Computing software which is the brain of the overall system for best user experience, enhancing operational excellence to meet actual user expectation, and intelligent decision support system. This will help to make our cities smarter, with a goal of achieving fewer crimes, 24x7 surveillance, and safer environments for city inhabitants, in tune with modern lifestyle. In addition to 24x7 surveillance, video from same camera can be analyzed to generate various types of actionable information, which eventually can be used in various domains. One such example is to keep your city clean. We have developed technology to analyze video to understand whether garbage bins are cleaned in timely manner, save lives of citizens to automatically detect various types of traffic violations as hinted earlier without requiring any expensive specially camera, but normal surveillance camera.

Q. What are the various verticals that you have worked on and have targeted? We understand that every industry has its unique challenges and that finding the right solution for your needs is an important decision. Q. What do you think are the most exciting developments/trends in our industry at the moment? The top trending technology driving the security industry in the year 2019, is artificial intelligence and deep learning. AI & DL powered solutions empower businesses and city leaders to make proactive, data-driven decisions to increase operational efficiencies, as well as giving them the ability to recognize and prevent potential issues before they arise. Having overpromised and underdelivered a decade ago, recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning software have made intelligent video analytics a realistic capability for end-users to deploy at scale. Secondly, as video continues to gain popularity, the need to conserve bandwidth is driving a surge in cloud migration and edge computing. This promises to open the possibility for advanced video analytics that process data collected from cameras and devices. In 2019, we anticipate a continued migration to cloud computing and edge processing and as a result, we shall see AI-backed video content analytics become much more widely adopted in many industries such as transportation, education, healthcare, retail and more. Thirdly and most importantly, unification of applications in a single platform will be trending in coming years. Videonetics has developed AI &

DL enabled unified video computing platform which is highly scalable and customizable as per the customer requirement. Our latest and powerful Unified Video Computing platform encompasses Intelligent VMS, Intelligent Content Analytics, Facial Recognition, Intelligent Traffic Management System in a single interface. I strongly believe that our innovation in Video optimized cloud stack will enable the marketplace with various new applications and services.

Q. What is the total size of the Security & Surveillance market in India? To what size do you expect it to grow by 2020? India’s security and surveillance market has grown considerably over the past few years due to rising security concerns and sustained growth of infrastructure in the country. The industry is expected to cross the US$20 billion mark by 2020. The ever-increasing requirement of security coupled with boom in smart cities has led to a rise of video surveillance market in the country. Government initiatives such as the development of 100 smart cities and Digital India campaign also adds to the overall growth of the industry. Additionally, the market is witnessing immense growth from sectors such as hospitality, airport, BFSI, retail, BPO, manufacturing, IT parks, infrastructure companies and education. Undoubtedly, the security revolution will continue manifest creating new possibilities to detect and deter threats more effectively.

Q. The industry is now moving from analogue to IP-based solutions, what do you think could be the opportunities and challenges for customers? Electronic security systems have become the norm rather than the exception. The new-age security market has evolved from analogue to digital systems. Consumers are no longer interested in low cost and general-purpose cameras. There is a growing demand of highly sophisticated solutions in government

as well as private sectors such as facial recognition, advanced video analytics, traffic monitoring, perimeter protection, asset protection so on. We see increasing adoption of edgebased analytics in applications like city surveillance, traffic management for ANPR, Red Light Violation, Speed Violation, No Helmet and Triple Riding Detection, No Seat belt Detection, Detection of Use of Cellphone while driving. Additionally, AI & DL based Video analytics has custom-built applications such as Object Detection, Crowd Monitoring, Graffiti & Vandalism Detection, Fire & Smoke Video Analytics, No Safety Helmet/Apron Detection for the enterprise, industrial and commercial markets. The need of the hour in the changing security scenario is to educate and train distributors, system integrators, partners and even end users. While imparting certified training to integrators and partners would ensure that the service quality is improved. While educating users would ensure that they understand the necessity of security and surveillance.

Q. What are your plans for the next 5 years? Is there anything new in the pipeline? Since inception, Videonetics have been playing a pivotal role in India by providing indigenously developed innovative video computing platform for making the city safer and smarter. After sustained R&D efforts, Videonetics developed very FIRST “Indian Deep Learning framework optimized for video to augment its Visual Computing platform. We have always strived for innovations in Video computing domain. With our sheer determination and unified efforts, we will continue to invest in R&D to generate Indian Intellectual Properties with a patriotic mission to minimize our dependency on foreign technologies. Holding a leadership position in India, we have started expanding our footprints in South East Asia, Middle East, US, UK markets by delivering and deploying solutions for various verticals.

Legionella & Its Effect: Water Safety

L

egionella pneumophilla is a deadly pneumonia causing bacterium, Which if inhaled by humans, can lead to fatal respiratory disease. It causes Pontiac fever and Legionnaires’ disease. Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia, which causes potentially fatal complications to occur within human lungs. According to the WHO: “The death rate from Legionnaires’ disease may be as high as 40–80% in untreated patients and can be reduced to 5–30% through appropriate case management and depending on the severity of the clinical signs and symptoms. Overall the death rate is usually within the range of 5–10% in any outbreak. To avoid such high risk disease we must prevent formation and spreading of Legionella. Now lets see in details characteristics of Legionella to know why testing is important. The following conditions allow Legionella to multiply rapidly in man –made water systems and increase the risk of outbreak. • Temperatures between 20-45°C • Construction, Presence of old plumbing and corrosion • Large and complex water systems – as these have a larger surface area for the growth of Legionella and can contain areas in which bacteria can

34

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

evade biocides • Differing levels of biocides present in the system • Areas where no biocide is used ,Areas that produce a lot of water spray or aerosol • Poor maintenance and control of control measures, No control measures in place at all • Areas where people with a weakened immune system are present • pH fluctuations , Nutritional build-up of biofilm, scale, sludge etc* *Sources of protection and nutrition for Legionella are algae, amoebae and other bacteria. Scale, sludge, biofilm and other sediment can provide favorable conditions for growth and can protect bacteria from hostile temperatures and biocides, that would otherwise kill them As mentioned above that the source of Legionella is water system, its our primary responsibility to safeguard the water. We must bring awareness about Water safety. What are the long-term side effects of Legionnaires’ disease? Those who survive Legionnaires’ disease can experience severe lifechanging and long-term health impacts. A study carried on 122 survivors in the Netherlands found that survivors of Legionnaires’ disease suffered from chronic fatigue in 75% of cases; had neurological symptoms (such as short

and long-term memory loss) in 66% of cases; neuromuscular symptoms (such as muscle pain and loss and movement issues) in 63% and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in 15% of cases. On average survivors of Legionnaires’ disease have a 1.5-year decrease in their health-related quality of life*. The infection can be caught from any water source that produces spray or aerosols but some common sources of infection in a hotel setting include showers, pools, spas, hottubs, cooling towers, air-conditioning units and even ice machines. These high-risk areas need to be properly cleaned and managed or microorganisms will quickly multiply. Hot tubs and cooling towers are of particular concern as they have the ability to spread deadly Legionella bacteria over long distances. In warm climates, water temperature is harder to control and can provide Legionella - a heat-loving bacteria - with optimal conditions for rapid growth3. Stagnant water in the pipes of empty rooms can also encourage the growth of scale, sludge and amoeba which protect Legionella and provide the bug with nutrients, thus accelerating its growth and spread. At present, everyone depends on the Lab culture method for Legionella test, which takes 2-3 weeks to get result whether this area is Legionella free or not. While waiting for result effected area can turn into dangerous zone. In India, IPL technology offers a latest technology which can provide details whether particular area has Legionella or not, that too in 25 minutes.

Keep Hazards at Bay & Make Welding a Pleasure by S.K. Palit

S

afety is a critical consideration for any welding project. Arc welding is a safe occupation when proper precautions are taken. But, if safety measures are ignored, welders can face an array of hazards which can be potentially dangerous, including electric shock, fumes and gases, fire and explosions and more. In order to help keep welders safe, organizations such as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) offer safety guidelines to help control, minimize or to help employers and workers avoid welding hazards. Employers should ensure that all workers comply with the following important guidelines in the workplace: • Read and understand manufacturer instructions for equipment • Carefully review material safety data sheets • Follow the company’s internal safety practices Awareness of the most common welding hazards and knowing how to avoid them

42

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

ensures a safe, productive work environment for all.

Electric Shock Electric shock is one of the most serious and immediate risks facing a welder. Electric shock can lead to severe injury or death, either from the shock itself or from a fall caused by the reaction to a shock. Electric shock occurs when welders touch two metal objects that have a voltage between them, thereby inserting themselves into the electrical circuit. For instance, if a worker holds a bare wire in one hand and a second bare wire with another, electric current will pass through that wire and through the welding operator, causing an electric shock. The higher the voltage, the higher the current and, thus the higher the risk for the electric shock to result in injury or death. The most common type of electric shock is secondary voltage shock from an arc welding circuit, which ranges from 20 to 100 volts. Bear in mind that even a shock of 50 volts or less can be enough to injure or kill an operator, depending on the conditions. Due to its constant change in

polarity, alternating current (AC) voltage is more likely to stop the heart than direct current (DC) welders. It is also more likely to make the person holding the wire unable to let go. To avoid secondary voltage shock, welding operators should wear dry gloves in good condition, never touch the electrode or metal parts of the electrode holder with skin or wet clothing and be sure to insulate themselves from the work and ground, keeping dry insulation between their body and the metal being welded or ground (such as a metal floor or wet surface). ADOR Welding Limited (AWL) offers a wide range of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), like Welding Gloves, Safety Shoes and other safety products to ensure welders’ safety. In addition, AWL offers VRD (Voltage Reducing Device) as a built-in feature as an option, and also VRD Units which can be fitted externally to any AC or DC SMAW Welding machine, which keeps the secondary voltage down to a safe level of 18-20 V when no welding is being done (machine switched on, but in idle condition). Full welding power

TECH TRENDS

SAFETY INDUSTRY

is automatically enabled whenever the welder strikes the welding arc. An even more serious shock, primary voltage shock, may occur when a welder touches electrically “hot” or “live” parts inside the welder case or the electric distribution system to which the welder is connected. This action can lead to a shock of 230 or 415 volts. AWL offers ELCB as an option in their welding machines to completely eliminate this hazard.

Fumes and Gases Overexposure to welding fumes and gases can be hazardous to the health of the welder as well as any other person who is working in the vicinity of the welding area. Welding fume contains potentially harmful complex metal oxide compounds from consumables, base metal and the base-metal coatings, so it is important to keep the head out of the fumes and use enough ventilation and/or exhaust to control the exposure to substances in the fume, depending on the type of rod and base metal being used. The specific potential health effects which relate to the welding consumable being used can be found in the Health

Hazard Data section of the Safety Data Sheet available from the consumable manufacturer. Welding areas require adequate ventilation and local exhaust to keep fumes and gases away from the breathing zone and the general area. In most situations, a ventilation system- such as a fan, and an exhaust system or fixed or removable exhaust hoods- to remove fumes and gases from the work area are provided. AWL has introduced in their range different models of Welding Fume Extraction Systems, both stand-alone as well as centralized systems (KING EXTRACTORS), with advanced technology, special filters and with or without built-in compressors

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

Ergonomics When welding heavy material manually and during assembly welding the loads are very static. Positioning welding also gives high loads. Ergonomic control of Welder’s position, arrangement of rotating tables (rotators and turn tables) is important to reduce welder fatigue and chances of poor weld quality.

Fire and Explosions Welding arc creates extreme temperatures, and may pose a significant fire and explosions hazard if safe practices are not followed. While the welding arc may reach temperatures of 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the real danger is not from the arc itself, but rather the intense near the arc & the heat, sparks and spatter created by the arc. This spatter can reach up to 35 feet away from the welding space.

To prevent fires, before beginning to weld, inspect the work area for any flammable materials and remove them from the area. Flammable materials comprise of three categories: liquid, such as gasoline, oil and paint; solid, such as wood, cardboard and paper; gas, including acetylene, propane and hydrogen.

Other Safety Considerations Welders should also be aware of other safety considerations within the work environment. For example, those working in a confined space or in an elevated area may need to take extra precautions. In any welding situation, welding operators should pay close attention to safety information on the products being used and the material safety data sheets provided by the manufacturer and work with their employer and co-workers to follow appropriate safe practices for their workplace. Good common sense is also key while opening cans of electrodes, keep hands away from sharp edges. Remove clutter and debris from the welding area to prevent tripping or falling. And never use broken or damaged equipment or PPE. To keep up with the most recent safety practices, welding operators should utilize resources from the American Welding Society (AWS), OSHA and welding manufacturers. By following these safe practices and using common sense, operators can stay safe and keep production moving with no lost-time accidents. Safety & Health Fact Sheets are provided in the ANSI Z49.1 Standards.

Innovative dust solutions for conveyor systems in bulk handling

H

S Industrial Technologies works closely with ScrapeTec based in Germany, to offer diverse industries in India , advanced solutions for conveyor systems used in the handling of abrasive materials with excessive dust. “AirScrape®, DustScrape, TailScrape and SpeedScrape products, which encompass the latest technology, have been developed by ScrapeTec, to provide dependable solutions for specific problems – like dust, spills and contamination – at the transfer points of conveyor systems,” “These highly-efficient systems prevent dust formation, reduce material spill, enable thorough belt-cleaning and minimise the risk of explosion at critical sections along the conveyor route and at transfer points. “Although conventional dust prevention side-seals do reduce conveyor problems in the short-term, they quickly wear-out as a result of friction and can also damage the belt of the conveyor during extended periods of use.

46

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

“Scrapetec’s robust systems, which are virtually maintenance-free, extend the service life of conveyor belts and reduce cleaning requirements of the entire conveyor system. Apart from cost-efficient operation, these products also contribute to occupational safety, environmental protection and safety, by minimising dust generation and contamination. “Correct installation of this highlyefficient equipment ensures optimum performance, reduced risk of explosion, low maintenance and extended service life of the conveyor system.” The contact-free AirScrape conveyor belt skirting system is a highly-effective side seal that lies over the conveyor belt, without contact, and creates negative pressure on the belt, due to its specially-designed lamella structure. Because this system hovers freely above the conveyor belt, skirt friction and belt damage is eliminated and service life of every component of the conveyor is extended. The AirScrape system encompasses inward facing, hardened-steel diagonal

blades and operates according to a new principle where it hovers 1-2 mm, on the left and right side above the conveyor belt. These blades deflect larger particles inwards, while using the air-flow of the conveyor belt and conveyed material to create an inward suction, flowing any dust and fine particles back into the product flow. Through these diagonally fitted plates and the speed of the running belt, air is drawn from the outside inwards. As a result, neither the dust nor material can escape. Conventional skirting is pressed against a conveyor belt to keep dust and material in the middle of the belt, but after a period, wear of the skirting and belt can be so severe, that material and dust escapes. Material spillage at transfer points needs to be removed and regular maintenance of belt skirting and transfer points is necessary. A dust-free and contact-free sidesealing system for belt conveyors avoids this problem, as there is no skirt contact and therefore reduced

TECH TRENDS

belt wear. Motor power requirements are reduced as there is no belt-skirt friction and because there is continuous skirting with no gaps, product loss is minimal. Studies show, that even five years after installation and with continuous use in harsh conditions, the AirScrape system hardly shows any signs of wear. Operational costs are also reduced because there is no need for spillage collection, regular maintenance, or replacement parts. This durable system consists of nonflammable and anti-static polyurethane materials and blades made from Hardox/Stainless Steel. FDA-approved materials are also available for specific conveyor handling applications. The TailScrape system enhances performance of the AirScrape, by sealing the transfer tail in the rear area and also works according to the Venturi concept, to prevent dust generation and material spills. The intelligent blade structure on the underside of the system, creates negative pressure in the conveying area, preventing the escape of materials. Dust is kept in the material flow by air intake. TailScrape is mounted precisely to the existing AirScrape system, so that it seals the transfer to the bend, averting dust generation and material spillage, also reducing the risk of explosion.e A metal sheet is used in the rear area of the transfer, matching the contour of the belt trough and installed approximately 20 mm from the belt. The TailScrape is shortened to the distance between the two AirScrapes mounted on the side and bent to fit

48

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

SAFETY INDUSTRY

the trough. The TailScrape is fixed and adjusted to the sheet by means of slotted holes and lifting elements, allowing almost no gap and no contact with the belt. The TailScrape system is available in small, medium and large designs, suitable for all belt widths, to perfectly match the AirScrape variants. Because the TailScrape system also operates without contact to the conveyor belt, there is no belt or skirting wear. This system, which can be operated permanently with minimal maintenance requirements, also extends service life of conveyor components. For production areas with excessive dust generation, it is highly recommendable for installation of the DustScrape. This dust emission prevention system comprises a filter cloth, support arches and skirts, arms to hold the system above the belt and a rubber curtain to eliminate further dust development – all sized to specific requirements. This system is easy to install and can be retrofitted to existing conveyors, for continuous operation and for extended periods. The durable filter cloth – which retains dust particles created by conveyed materials, while remaining permeable to circulating air – is available with different qualities, including anti-static features, for specific applications – for example, in underground mining. The highly-effective, energy-free DustScrape dust emission prevention system, complies with most new dust prevention guides and prevents

health and safety issues on-site. This system also minimises product loss, by effectively preventing material from being blown into the surrounding environment. The SpeedScrape secondary belt cleaner design is based on the inclined and staggered positioning of Tungsten blades, which increases the scraping surface to as much as 150% of the conveyor belt width. This highperformance system allows scraped material to be easily discharged. The maintenance-free tensioner system adjusts the blade pressure to the conveying condition, ensuring blades are pressed onto the belt, with optimum pressure at all times during operation. Low stress on the belt reduces damage and wear. The flexible scraping assembly is able to swivel into a lower position for reversible operation. Durable scraping blades are manufactured from a high alloy and are designed to re-sharpen automatically, by scraping against the belt. These advanced conveyor belt systems – which meet stringent quality, safety and environmental standards – are available directly from HS Industrial Technologies (India), which provides an assessment and solutions service to customers in diverse sectors, for planning and implementing projects. A technical advisory and support service enhances performance of every system .

Are Safety Gears needed at Modern Malls too??? What do you think?

W

ell Yes!! Malls are no longer just the places where people go to buy stuff, but they have turned more into a favorite hangout place for people of all ages. Giving in to the market buzz and massive crowd hovering daily, the authorities are obliged on assuring the safety of the visitors as well as the workers at the malls. Thinking of safety what exactly comes to your mind first? CCTVs? Security Check at the entrance? Or Smoke Detectors?? Yes, all these 3 are the main soldiers safeguarding us from publicly known hazards – Thefts, Terror attacks or Fire sparks. But considering the giant arcade and multiple other facilities available at the malls, it is more important to understand and mitigate the hidden risks involved at these one-stop refreshment centers. Most rather all modern malls today are equipped with underground parking areas, food courts, & battery rooms that

50

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

support the electronic and automation systems running inside the mall. Let’s take a look to the risks associated with these areas-

Food Courts LPG or PNG leaks are one of the highest risks associated with Mall kitchens. To avoid such fatal situation, it is mandatory to install LPG gas leak detectors in respective restaurant’s kitchen. Ambetronics flame-proof detectors are designed to signal a warning before the gas density in the air reaches dangerous levels i.e. 1.8% to 9.5% V/V.

Underground Parking Areas The burning of vehicular fuel emits gases like Carbon Monoxide (CO) and oxides of Nitrogen (NO/ NO2) from the car exhausts. The increased concentration of these gases can cause headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, wheezing, coughing, colds, flu, bronchitis, convulsions, unconsciousness, respiratory arrest, and even death. Ambetronics resolves this issue by offering high quality and precise gas detection solutions to monitor levels of CO & NO2. The standard 4-20 mA output of these gas detectors is

exhaust fans and thereby ventilate the car parks ensuring controlled and safe atmosphere.

Battery Rooms Owing to the modernization of malls with so many electric equipment, computerization, and automation systems in place, it is obvious that the malls are home to large-scale battery rooms. However, these Lead-acid batteries emit Hydrogen gas while charging and discharging. Hydrogen when reaches a concentration range of 4.1% to 75% V/V is highly flammable in presence of

oxygen and can even cause severe skin burns and eye issues to the workers coming in contact with it. The best way to solve this is by installing Ambetronics hydrogen gas detector that will activate the fan only if the concentration reaches 1% and also raise an alarm when the concentration reaches to 4%. To summarize the above, when it comes to malls and safety, an age-old saying always pops up in our mind, “prevention is better than cure”. Hence installing gas detectors is a must-have for today’s modern malls to ensure that their consumers feel welcomed and safe at the mall and get an enjoyable experience.

Hazardous Chemicals: Safe Storage and Handling “Safety is a collective responsibility that requires the full co-operation of everyone.” - R. R. NAIR 1.0 INTRODUCTION: The degree of hazards associated with a chemical depends not only in its configuration but also on the quantity involved and the manner in which it is exposed. Many chemical compounds may be inhaled in the form of gas, vapour or dust; others may be ingested by mistake while others may penetrate the organism through the skin. The quantity that the organism can absorb without danger to health varies greatly from one substance to other. It must be borne in mind that human dimension is an important factor in most accidents. As such, safe practices have to be a way of life and an attitude of mind, needs to be built into the person concerned. This calls for a rigorous discipline, concern and responsibility, attention to detail and an attitude not to ignore some of the simplest ‘do’s and don’ts’. Problem of safety and health associated with chemical workplaces have been reviewed by many experts and organisations. In spite of this, however, the basic problem remains that the persons managing or handling chemicals has relatively limited appreciation for safety and health. There is a need, therefore, to motivate this group further. Thus, this article is focused on the safe storage and handling of hazardous chemicals in workplaces.

2.0 GENERAL RULES: There are certain general rules for storage and handling of chemicals that should be scrupulously followed in any

52

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

situation, which are given below: 1. All containers of chemicals must be labelled. 2. Avoid unnecessary exposure to chemicals by any route. 3. Do not smell or taste chemicals. 4. Do not allow, release of toxic substances in cold rooms and warm rooms, since these have contained recirculated atmosphere. 5. Do not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum or apply cosmetics in areas where chemicals are present. Wash hands before conducting these activities. 6. Do not allow, storage, handling or consumption of food and beverages in areas which are used for chemical operations. No food or drinking water should be stored near the hazardous chemicals. Never store chemicals in the fume cupboards. 7. Confine long hair and loose clothing. Wear shoes at all times. Do not wear sandals or perforated shoes. 8. Assure that appropriate eye protection is worn by all persons, including visitors where chemicals are stored or handled. 9. Wear appropriate gloves when the potential for contact with toxic or hazardous materials exists. Inspect the gloves before each use. Wash them before removal, and replace them periodically. Gloves made of neoprene or butyl rubber should be used when handling solvents. While handling corrosive substances, rubber gloves should be used.

10. Use appropriate respiratory equipment, when air contaminated concentrations are not sufficiently restricted by engineering controls. Inspect the respirator before use. Avoid use of contact lenses unless necessary. If they are used, inform supervisor, so that special precautions can be taken. 11. Valves in pressurised air and vacuum lines should be turned off, when these services are not in use. 12. Chemicals should never be allowed to accumulate on working benches. 13. Winchester bottles containing hazardous chemicals like, strong acids should never be lifted by the neck and carried, but transported in special containers or buckets. 14. High pressure tanks should be transferred only by cart and with the cap in place. On removing from the cart for use, the tanks should be strapped firmly to a wall or bench, and the gas released through a reducing valve. 15. Never attempt to fill an empty gas cylinder unless it has been pumped down to One mm pressure. 16. Ensure that the normal escape route for a pressure build-up is not pointed towards operating personnel. Safety shield should be provided in front of all explosive reactions. 17. When dealing with large amounts of volatile solvents in metallic systems, the apparatus and containers should be bonded and grounded. 18. Large quantities of solvents should

24.

never be stored in a working area, nor work carried out in a storage area. Solvents should never be handled near an open flame. Organic vapours and combustible gases such as hydrogen, acetylene, ethylene, ethylene oxide, methyl ether, etc. should be kept away from motors, transformers and switches. While handling hazardous chemicals, use protective equipment such as shatter proof safety glasses, face masks, aprons, etc. Acquaintance with first-aid fire control equipment such as fire extinguishers should definitely be resorted to. Peruse the Material Safety Data Sheet before handling any hazardous chemical. Be alert to unsafe conditions and see that they are corrected when detected. Develop and encourage safe habits.

3.0 STORAGE: The chemicals requiring storage may be explosive, oxidising, flammable, toxic, etc. While storing the above substances, it is to be ensured that their hazardous properties are not to cause physical injury or material damage. It must also be ensured that the hazardous substances does not react with other stored substances. It may be borne in mind that certain chemicals may present more than one hazardous property, e.g. benzene. The storage measures necessitated by one hazardous property may, in some cases, be sufficient to ensure that the chemical is stored safely from all point of view. However, this may not be always so, consequently, when establishing storage facilities and procedures, of all the hazards associated with the chemicals should be taken into consideration. Prevention of unauthorised access to the stored material should also be ensured.

54

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

SAFETY INDUSTRY

Before going to the specific requirements, let us understand the general guidelines to be observed for storing hazardous chemicals, which are listed below: 1. Store materials by boxes separately. 2. Solids when dry have low tendency for reaction, so most of them can be shelved alphabetically. However, there are few exceptions which are: (i) Sulphides should be stored away from acids; (ii) Cyanide compounds must be segregated from acids, especially liquid acids; and (iii) Phenol crystals must be stored separately from oxidisers. 3. Store liquid chemicals below shoulder height by following: (i) Store organic acids separately from inorganic acids, e.g. acetic acid from nitric acid; (ii) Perchloric acid should be stored alone; (iii) Flammable liquids in excess of about 38 Litres (10 Gallons) must be stored in safety cans; (iv) Keep oxidisers away from acids, organics and metals; (v) Store all oxidisers in cool place. 4. As much as possible, liquid wastes should be stored by compatibility. Do not accumulate more than 210 Litres (about 55 Gallons) of chemical waste. 5. Reactive metals, such as potassium, sodium, and powdered metal, should be stored in flammable storage cabinets. 6. Mercury must be stored in nonbreakable secondary containers and kept on a bottom shelf of a closed cabinet. Storage requirements for some specific classes of hazardous chemicals are outlined below. It may be noted here that, the potential hazards of various categories of chemicals are not attempted here, but focus only on the storage requirements. 1. Explosive Chemicals: Explosive substances are chemicals

and mixtures which, when affected by strong mechanical force (hitting, shock, friction) or starting ignition, suddenly transform to gases of large volume through an extremely rapid oxidising reaction. The mixture of explosive materials often used are (i) picric acid, (ii) nitroglycerine, (iii) hexogen, etc. The mixtures of materials capable of explosion are (i) black powder, (ii) dynamite, (iii) ammonium nitrate, etc. The storage places or magazines of explosive chemicals should be situated far away from other buildings so as to minimize damage in case of an explosion. The storage rooms should not be near a building containing grease, oil, petrol, waste combustible material or flammable material, open fire or flame. Magazines should preferably be located at least 60 meters away from power plant, tunnel, highway, dam, building, etc. The storage place should not be damp and should be well ventilated. Natural lighting or portable electric lamp should be used in the storage areas. The store rooms should be of a solid construction and kept securely locked when not in use. Floors of storage place should be of wood or other nonsparking material. Non-ferrous tools should be used for opening cases of magazines. 2. Oxidising Chemicals: Oxidising chemicals are substances, which supply oxygen and do therefore readily assist and maintain combustion. Even if they are not combustible, largely contribute to the ignition of combustible materials and to their intensive, occasionally explosive burning. Examples of oxidising chemicals are (i) oxygen, (ii) chlorine, (iii) peroxide compounds. Also some oxidising agents, for example, concentrated nitric acid, may create fire, if they come into contact with organic substances such as timber or packing materials.

TECH TRENDS

Some of the oxidising chemicals may give off oxygen at storage temperature and others require heat. The risk of fire as a result of mix-up of oxidising chemicals with combustible materials may be avoided by storing oxidising chemicals in a separate place. Powerful oxidising chemicals should not be stored near to even slightly flammable materials. The storage area should be kept cool, well ventilated and be of fire resisting construction. 3. Flammable Chemicals: The flammable substances can be in gaseous, liquid or solid forms. Gases may be grouped into two main groups viz.: (i) combustible gases, and (ii) noncombustible gases. Combustible gases are those that burn in air with normal oxygen concentration, provided that the conditions required for burning exists. Non-combustible gases are those that do not burn either in oxygen or in air with any concertation of air. Non-combustible gases not supporting burning are called inert gases (e.g. nitrogen, noble gases, carbon dioxide, etc.) Flammable gases, such as, Acetylene, Butane, Coal Gas, Cyanogen, Ethane, Ethylene, Hydrogen Cyanide, Hydrogen Sulphide, Hydrogen, Propane, etc. and liquids with low flash points should be stored in place which are cool enough to prevent accidental ignition if the vapour mix with the air. The storage area should be away from any source of heat or fire hazard. Highly flammable materials should be kept apart from powerful oxidising agents or spontaneously combustible materials. No open light or flames should be permitted. Flameproof electrical light fittings should be used. The installation in the storage room should be electrically grounded and periodically inspected and equipped with automatic smoke or fire detection systems. Control valves on storage vessels and pipelines should be labelled and painted with distinctive

56

SAFETY INDUSTRY

safety colours. Tanks containing flammable liquids should be situated on ground slopping away from the main buildings and plant installations. If they are on the level ground, adequate spacing and provision of dikes are needed. It should be borne in mind that the dike capacity should be at least 1.5 times that of the storage capacity of tank. Venting facilities and flame arrestors on storage tanks should be provided. Adequate firefighting facilities should be provided in the storage area. Smoking should not be allowed in the vicinity of the storage area. 4. Toxic Chemicals: Toxic chemicals are substances, which may cause harmful effects by absorption into the body by (i) inhalation (breathing) the vapour or mist, (ii) absorption through skin and (iii) ingestion (entry into the mouth and swallowing). Some of the toxic substances are also potential fire hazards and may act in two ways, viz.: (i) the high toxicity of certain chemicals themselves may be hazardous in a fire and (ii) their presence within the free zone may effectively restrict firefighting operations. Toxic chemicals should be stored in a cool, well ventilated place out of direct sun rays and away from all sources of ignition and flame. The storage area should be well ventilated for possible leakage of volatile liquids. Substances which can react chemically with each other should be kept in separate rooms. 5. Corrosive Chemicals: The corrosive chemicals are substances or products that will attack and/or eat away skin, metals, etc. Corrosiveness of these substances varies between substances. Such products are sometimes flammable or they may be toxic as well as corrosive. The majority of corrosive substances are strong oxidising agents, but at the same time they have very strong

destructive effects on living tissues. Corrosives such as, Chloric Acid, Formic Acid, Hydrochloric Acid, Hydrogen Fluoride, Nitric Acid, Sulphuric Acid, etc. should be kept cool but well above their freezing point. Storage areas should be isolated from the rest of the plant or warehouse by impervious walls or floor with provision for safe disposal of spillage. The floors should be cinders, concrete treated to reduce its solubility. Carboys containing corrosive acids should be packed with effective inorganic insulating materials. Emergency showers and eyewash bottles should be provided close to the storage area.

4.0 INCOMPATIBLE CHEMICALS: Incompatible chemicals are combinations of substances, usually in concentrated form, that react with each other to produce very exothermic reactions that can be violent and explosive and/or can release toxic substances, usually as gases. In other words, incompatible chemicals give an undesired chemical reaction when mixed. This usually refers to substances that will react to cause an imminent threat to health and safety through an explosion, fire and/ or formation of toxic materials. Care should be taken when handling, storing or disposing of chemicals in combination. Some of the more widely – used incompatible chemicals are listed in Table. It may be noted that the absence of a chemical from this list should not be taken to indicate that it is safe to mix with any other chemical. It may also be noted that this is not a comprehensive list of all possible combinations of chemicals. For details on any incompatible chemical, always check the relevant MSDS.

5.0 CHEMICAL SPILLAGE: Spillage is most common where the chemicals are stored or handled and they cannot be eliminated altogether.

The procedure to be followed for dealing with chemical spills vary and it will depend upon the type, nature and the hazard potential of the chemical concerned. Before dealing with the specific spill control procedures, one should observe the following general precautions: 1. All spills should be cleaned up promptly, efficiently and properly. 2. Containing the spill rapidly is a primary concern, because the smaller the area involved, the easier the clean-up. 3. After the spill has been contained, it can be cleaned up with appropriate materials. 4. Appropriate gloves should be worn, while handling the spill. 5. During the clean-up, to prevent inhalation, wear appropriate breathing apparatus. 6. If a volatile, flammable or toxic material is spilled, immediately warn everyone to extinguish flames and turn off spark producing equipment such as bush type motors. Shut down all equipment and leave the area until it decontaminated. 7. For spills covering small areas of skin, immediately flush the skin with flowing water for at least 15 minutes. 8. If there is no visible burn, wash the skin with warm water and soap. 9. It is advisable to seek medical attention for even minor chemical burns. 10. Do not use creams or lotions on the skin. 11. For splashes into the eyes, immediately flush the eye with tempered portable water from a gently flowing source for at least 15 minutes. An eye wash fountain should be used. First-Aid must be followed by prompt treatment by a medical staff. 12. Always refer to appropriate MSDS.

For the purpose of spill control, the hazardous chemicals can be categorised as Halides, Aldehydes, Inorganic Acids, Organic Halons, Aromatic Amines & Nitro Compounds and Aliphatic Amines. The spill control methods used for these chemicals are given below: 5.1 Halides: In the event of spillage of Organic Halides, such as, Acetyl Chloride, Benzoyl Chloride, Crotyl Chloride, Oxalyl Chloride and Inorganic Halides, such as, Anhydrous Aluminium Chloride, Chloro Sulphonic Acid, Tin Tetrachloride and Titanium Tetrachloride, cover the chemical with Sodium Bicarbonate. Scoop the resulting bicarbonate mixture into a cardboard box for subsequent incineration or spread on the ground and flood with water. 5.2 Aldehydes: In the event of spillage of Aldehydes, such as, Acetaldehydes, Acrolein, Benzaldehyde, Chloral, Formalin, Furfural and Glyoxal, eliminate all sources of ignition and flammables. Cover the chemical with large quantities of Sodium Bisulphate. Add a small quantity of water and mix. After one hour wash down the drain with excess water. 5.3 Inorganic Acids: In the event of spillage of Inorganic Acids, such as, Hydrochloric Acid, Phosphoric Acid, and Sulphuric Acid eliminate all sources of ignition. Cover surfaces with Nitrogen Dioxide, or Sodium Bicarbonate. Mix and add water. Scoop slurry and make it neutral by washing with water. 5.4 Organic Halons: In the event of spillage of Organic Halons and related compounds such as, Allyl Bromide, Benzyl Chloride, Bromomethane, Chlorodiphenyl,

Dieldrin, Epichlorihydrin & Tetramethyl Lead and Vinyl Chloride, eliminate all sources of ignition. Absorb the material on paper or vermiculite. Allow to evaporate and burn the paper or vermiculite. 5.5 Aromatic Amines & Nitro Compounds: In the event of spillage of Aromatic Halogenated Amines & Nitro Compounds such as, Chlorophenols, Dichlorobenzene, Dinitrobenzene, Endrin, Nitrophenols and Picric Acids, sweep solid spills onto paper or absorb on paper of vermiculite, and allow to evaporate, then burn the paper. Absorb or mix the spill with large quantities of vermiculite, Sodium Bicarbonate, or sand. Pack the spill in a paper, carton and burn in an open pit. 5.6 Aliphatic Amines: In the event of spillage of liquid or solid form of Aliphatic Amines, such as, Allylamine, Diethanolamine, Hydroxylamine and Pyrrolidine, cover with Sodium Bisulphate, then spray with water and wash down the drain with large quantities of water.

6.0 CONCLUSION: Though various operations in chemical industries can now be conducted in very safe conditions, accidents cannot be eliminated altogether. It may be reminded here that lack of safety measures along with a limited knowledge of potential hazards of chemicals, still led to several dangerous incidents or disasters involving several fatalities in the chemical industry. Attempts should therefore be made to minimise the accidents including their impact. Storage of hazardous chemicals should be supervised by a competent person. Periodic inspection of all storage places should be carried out by the safety officer or supervisor. Permit system should be adhered to. All

workers in the storage place should be trained in safe working practices. Carry out rigorous maintenance and good housekeeping in the workplaces. Safety is a collective responsibility that requires the full co-operation of everyone in the workplace. Each person in the workplace should be aware of what his colleagues are doing because one individual’s simple mistake can lead to an accident or even disaster. Do not hesitate to point out to others that they are engaging in unsafe practises or operations. Above all, there is no compromise on even the smallest matter concerning safety has to be inculcated in people.

With an increasingly likely unregulated Brexit, certificates of constancy of per-formance issued by British institutes will lose their validity on the 30th of March 2019. VdS offers affected producers an accelerated procedure for issu-ing certificates (pictured a test in the VdS laboratories).

Damage limitation for “hard” Brexit: VdS supports manufacturers with accelerated certificates If the United Kingdom leaves the EU unregulated, certificates of constancy of performance issued by British institutes lose their validity on March 30th. // VdS minimises potential damage for manufacturers with an accelerated procedure for certification based on LPCB test reports.

T

he British House of Commons clearly rejected the EU withdrawal agreement negotiated by its head of government in mid-January. Since then, the media have been headlining “Mega Crisis”, “Eco-nomic Crisis”, “Nail-biting Affair”, even “Chaos without End”. A very unpleasant Brexit consequence not only for the safety sector: Certi-fications of the constancy of performance for construction products issued by certifiers registered in the United Kingdom are very likely to very soon lose their validity. In case of an unregulated Brexit, the notification of these bodies expires on the 30th of March 2019, according to the European Commission’s

64

communication paper “The withdrawal of the United Kingdom and the EU regulations in the field of industrial products” (p.4). Holders of such certificates will then need new documents from a body established and registered in the EU. VdS offers fast support for this urgent matter: Thanks to the long-standing partnership with the English institute LPCB, Europe’s No.1 for safety can produce the EU documents within about three weeks basing on existing LPCB test reports if a VdS-Approval already exists for the construc-tion product in question. Even without VdS-Approval, an accelerated awarding of certificates is possible in individual cases.

“An unregulated withdrawal of Great Britain from the EU is unfortunately becoming more and more probable”, explains Gunnar Bellingen, Head of the VdS Laboratories for Fire Protection Tech-nology. “From numerous discussions with our customers, we know that manufacturers around the world are working at full speed to minimise the expected damage caused by costs, additional work and, above all, loss of time. We hope to be able to alleviate the con-cerns of our partners with this rapid support offer.”

safety accessories made it possible to operate efficiently, safely. Though there are many case studies during past years, required to mention one here, One of our client the manufacturer of the heavy equipments has a wider & taller opening in their factory, earlier they were using traditional shutters, it was very unhandy to operate, as it was needed to open the shutter for 20-25 times in 8 hour shift and safety was major concern, the shutter can’t fulfill the requirement, so the only way to overcome with this problem was to make the shutter in open condition for all the time, this allows dust, wind & water to come inside in rainy days & normal days. Due to heavy dust it was very difficult to maintain the clean working

environment & required conditions. Avians has studied the requirement & observed the application & Suggested to go with “Avians Sectional Overhead Doors” These Sectional Overhead Doors were installed side by side in a row with 12 openings of size 6 m wide & 7 m height with vision windows. The door is constructed with multi panels & is in-filled with PUF of 40 mm thickness. With these installation clients heavy equipment frequent moving made very easy & concern of dust/wind entrance & safety was also resolved very effectively. Due to heavy & sturdy designs able to withstand wind loads as installed on building periphery. One added feature in these doors is that these can be provided with wicket doors for human entry/exit. Wicket door is integrated with door so as when the wicket door is opened door cannot be operated to have safe working of doors. Provision of very easy & effortless Hand chain mechanism to operate in case of power failure makes the door popular in every industry. Achieving the fire safety through cable testing role by powering the exit signs which lead the way to escape and enabling fire safety equipment such as sirens and sprinklers (circuit integrity performance) as well as limiting the spread of fire and flaming droplets, the smoke density and the release of hazardous emissions (reaction to fire performance). Therefore, it is extremely important that the cables have a certified standard that ensures their quality and reliability of performance in the case of a fire. This gives people as much chance as possible to escape, and the damage to the building’s infrastructure is minimised as much as it can be. When speaking about reaction to fire, there are five important factors to consider when designing cables for fire situations: smoke opacity and emissions of hazardous substances, the speed of propagation of flames along the cable, the level of heat released and the creation of flaming droplets. In the case of an unforeseen event, these factors become synonyms of security and control.

C

ables are everywhere around us, forming an invisible network that is vital to the modern world. Yet running through a building, a badly selected cable can in fact become a source of a fire or help it spread. A nonconforming cable can also potentially release hazardous gases that are often more dangerous to the people trying to escape the building than the flames themselves. However, the good news is that a correctly selected cable can significantly improve fire safety of a building or any other asset, ensuring the safety of people.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

Cables at the service of people safety

Halogen-free flame retardant cables are ideal

In the event of a fire, the utmost priority is making escape as easy as possible for everyone. However, it is not always possible to guarantee an optimal escape in every situation – one of the examples being historical buildings, for instance. There can be situations where the fire escape is far away, such as in a metro tunnel, or the area is crowded with many people trying to leave, such as a hospital, which leads to a low speed of escape. This is when cables play a critical

Halogen-free flame-retardant (HFFR, also known as low-smoke zero-halogen or LSOH) cables are ideal for safety-critical situations. They are designed and extensively tested to be flame-retardant so as to not increase the spread of a fire. Furthermore, HFFR cables are also designed to have a low smoke density in a fire and very limited emission of hazardous substances. When burnt, many standard cables emit hazardous gases that, when mixed with water, turn into halogenated

TECH TRENDS

FIRE INDUSTRY

acids. These chemicals are extremely dangerous to humans, animals and goods. Alternatively, halogen-free cables release no halogens if the cable is burnt, so neither of these dangerous chemicals will be produced. These characteristics make halogenfree flame-retardant cables ideal for fire safety engineering systems in large, multi-storey, and complex buildings.

Overcoming disparities between cable performance However, in order to efficiently optimize fire safety across the world, the global cable market has still one major challenge to overcome. This challenge is the absence of a common language and standards in different construction markets. As a result, while choosing cabling for a building, construction companies don’t always have a clear view on the performance of the cable they are choosing, including on the fire safety specifications. For example, HFFR cables of one manufacturer do not necessarily perform as those of another producer. However, until recently, it was difficult to know for sure how these are different. This is why the European Union has introduced cables in the Construction Product Regulation (CPR), a protocol that European construction products manufacturers must submit their goods to in order to warrant the end user that the quality of the product and level of performance is what they are aiming for. In particular, CPR ensures that all cables for construction are aligned in internal fire performance, and this affects every type of cable, whether that be power, telecoms, fibre optics, data, or any other types. It helps to ensure that reliable information is provided by the manufacturer on construction products in relation to their performance, which includes so far cable reaction to fire and release of dangerous substances in normal operation, dismantling and recycling. If a cable is not CPR certified (i.e. marked with the CE mark), then

74

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

it cannot be installed in constructions inside the EU. As a result, the introduction of one common language enforced by CPR has transformed the cable market for the better. It has helped create a much more transparent market in which the customer can have confidence and make more informed buying decisions. This common technical language ensures the harmonisation of fire performance in technical specifications, which means that all end-users are working towards the same level of safety and there is a safer solution for critical applications defined by National Regulators.

Testing is rigorous and thorough for quality guarantee Thanks to CPR, the current protocol for testing and assessment of performance and the continuous surveillance it requires is the most advanced system in the world as of today. The testing processes for these cables must be thorough in order to ensure a reliable cable performance in the event of a fire, and the processes for these tests are defined by specific protocol in CPR. To obtain a CE mark, a manufacturer has to issue a Declaration of Performances (DoP) – based on third

party laboratory tests – taking full legal responsibility of their product performances. The CPR defines listed performances required and test methods used to define the classification of cables (see Table 1 below). HFFR cables are normally classified in the upper Classes rising from Cca to B2ca with minimal additional performances s1, d1, a1. After the initial test, every four months, a third-party laboratory will take samples of the cable and repeat tests of that range to ensure its quality. Internal tests also take place so that you can be confident that the performance is extended to all elements of production. Overall, with the introduction of a common technical language and extensive testing programmes, CPR has led to a more standardised level of safety across the European cable market and established confidence in customers. The CPR example is one of the best practices that should be leveraged and applied in other regions and countries in the interest of a better fire protection and, ultimately, human safety. In the emerging countries in South America and Asia, whose potential is huge, market regulations will be indispensable as they will help fight with counterfeits and instore the necessary standards.

Fire extinguishers standards: Ensuring compliance

B

S 5306-9: 2015 acknowledges that the manufacturer’s refill or component is the best option because it’s the safest. However, this standard also discusses the term ‘verified alternatives’, which is all about ensuring safety. An ‘alternative’ is a little bit like when you get your car serviced – if you’ve got a Honda for example, and you take it to the Honda garage, some garages will say ‘Honda genuine parts’ – so it’s your assurance that those parts are going to work in that car. But some of those parts might also be generic. If you’ve got an extinguisher made by company X, and you buy the parts from company X, you know the parts are going to be compatible and they’re going to work with that extinguisher. If you buy generic components, you need to make sure that they are going to be safe, and they are going to work. This is where we have the term, ‘verified alternatives’. When it comes to extinguishers, generic parts might fit but there is a possibility that they might not work as expected. The advice here is to stick with buying from the manufacturer to ensure optimum performance. But ‘verified alternatives’ give service companies the option to use parts from other manufacturers. But the question remains – how do you know which parts can be safely substituted for an ‘alternative’ to the original manufacturer’s part? Following the standards on fire extinguishers is important to ensure compliance and high standards.

Performance critical and safety critical When considering verified alternatives, there are two key categories to consider – ‘performance critical’ and ‘safety critical’.

76

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

‘Performance critical’ are those components of the extinguisher that will make sure that it does what it is supposed to do: that it is going to be safe, reliable, efficient, and it is going to be fit for purpose. The ‘safety critical’ ones are the ones that aren’t directly linked to the performance of the extinguisher, but are still important from a safety perspective. For example, the anti-tamper device – the little tag bit that you pull off before you pull the pin out. Where you buy that plastic tamper from isn’t quite as important as the contents that are in the extinguisher. As long as that plastic tag will do what it’s supposed to do, i.e. not break when it’s not doing anything but break when you want it to, it doesn’t matter so much whether you bought it from the manufacturer as long as it meets the criteria specified in EN3. Performance critical spare parts include the refill (e.g. foam, additive or powder), the internal discharge tube, and the cartridge. Safety critical parts include wall brackets, the safety pin, and the tamper device. There are quite a few more listed in our handy technical document, ‘FIA Position on BS 5306-9: 2015’, ‘Verified Alternatives’, where you can see which parts are most important for optimum performance, and which

parts are more general safety critical spares.

What the standard says BS 5309-9:2015 says that if you are using non-manufacturer’s components or refills, you need to get confirmation from the supplier that the component or refill will work in that extinguisher from whoever supplied the components. The FIA view is that it is best practice to simply use the manufacturer’s specified components and medium. You can read more about this in the Guidance Document below, which goes into further detail. One of the important things to remember is that, if a service provider uses something different to what the manufacturer has recommended, then the service provider has to become responsible for what they’ve put in that extinguisher, or components they’ve used on it. Otherwise the customer – the person that owns the extinguisher – will assume, unless they’re told otherwise – that if they have an extinguisher with Company X brand on the outside, that all the components and the media that is put inside, is also made by Company X. As a result, the standard says that if you put something different in the extinguisher, you have to tell the customer.

Nanomist hybrid system: The evolution of fire protection technology success of hybrids depends on agent composition, internal flow dynamics of enclosure and its interaction with the fire, the operating pressure, and discharge pressures.

NanoMist Hybrid System (NHS)

N

anomist hybrid system (NHS) is a disruptive fire protection technology using ultrafine water mist below 10-micron blended with nitrogen through a unique injector design generating converging diverging discharge flow. The system runs on UPS batteries. NHS has short extinction time of below 100 seconds at low nitrogen release pressures around 300 psi, not requiring high structural integrity. The breakthrough performance of NHS is due to the synergistic effect of components and water droplet-induced favorable flow dynamics. A variety of complex fire protection systems exist today for a range of fire scenarios with varying degrees of success. Despite the latest advances in fire protection technology, there is a great need for a safe, environmentally friendly technology that causes minimal damage and business downtime for data centers and other high-end fire protection scenarios. Many systems are acceptable only in selected areas because of chemical toxicity, water damage and harmful oxygen levels in living areas, enclosure conditions of protected areas, structural integrity and pressure noise levels. In some scenarios, systems often can reduce oxygen to life threatening levels. These are some specific inherent issues in current systems. CO2 systems are

78

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

harmful to humans and cannot be used in normally occupied spaces. Chemical agents like HFCs need room integrity tests, are often unsuitable for occupied spaces, need expensive refills, have low ODP but high GWP and require complex software. Inert systems have a high operating pressure and require room integrity and suitable vent systems. High pressure release gas systems cause damage to data storage disks due to high SPL. A new class of hybrid fire protection system addressing these factors and delivering higher performance is evolving now with relevant FM and UL approvals. For example, Victaulic Vortex uses a supersonic jet stream of nitrogen to atomize a low-pressure stream of water into sub10-micron water droplets. There are other hybrid systems with water atomized by pressurized nitrogen and propelled by nitrogen. In general, many water mist systems can accommodate nitrogen as an atomizing gas, driver, or propellant, but it may not contribute significantly to enhanced extinguishment behavior. The hybrid system performance does not merely depend on the presence of two components but strongly depends on the uniform droplet size of the water mist, relative velocities of mist droplets and the gaseous stream, the downstream mixing process, and discharge flow behavior. Amongst other factors, the commercial

All hybrids are not equal, and there are opportunities for a revolutionary game changer technology with disruptive performance behavior. NanoMist Fire Safety (NFS) has been successful in unveiling an environmentally friendly fire protection solution long-sought gas-like ultrafine water mist hybrid system using a patented NanoMist single fluid atomizer device and a global patent pending injector system. NHS provides a hybrid composition and a new device for fire protection by either local or total flooding. A homogeneous hybrid composition with less than 12% of water is formed and discharged from a swirling flow mixer-injector device. The nitrogen release pressure is maintained at 200-300 psi, unlike other high-pressure inert gas and hybrid systems, ensuring safety, building integrity and low SPL. The high-velocity nitrogen entrains the low-velocity mist coming at the mixing plane of the injector. At the exit, the device creates a high-speed (up to 75 mph) swirling, converging and expanding flow inside the protection volume at near ambient pressure. The hybrid composition extinguishes the fire

TECH TRENDS

by synergistic cooling, inerting, and water droplet induced flow dynamics. Apart from the cooling effect by the water component, the local oxygen composition stratification created by the ultrafine mist helps in transporting the oxygen deficient air into the fire base. Also, the mixer-injector device allows varying the ultrafine droplets and inert gas at the mixing plane. The extinguishing concentration is reached as quickly as possible, preferably locally at the fire base while maintaining low release pressure from nitrogen cylinders. not needed since the release pressure is relatively low compared to existing high-pressure inert gas systems. The operating sound pressure level (SPL) is relatively low (<105 dB) at 200-300 psi. The nitrogen transport pressure, whether RAS or LAS, is almost ambient because the injector design opens to the total flooding area. This is unlike high pressure systems discharging the agent through a nozzle requiring structural integrity and vent systems. From the injector, the flow converges first, and after an intense mixing of ultrafine mist and nitrogen the flow expands reaches the fire base.

source (LAS) cabinet, is seen in Figure . NHS 50 protects a 50 m3 room. It contains a detector system, gas release and mister actuator panel, and a water tank with a pump. The injector device on the top of the cabinet can be oriented in a specific direction. The agent discharge velocity varies depending on the local or total flooding (30-50 mph) applications. The flow converges leaving the injector and then diverges and penetrates into the firebase. The system can also be installed as a remote agent source (RAS) with nitrogen delivered from a distributed bank. The release pressure can be set to 200-300 psi at the remote nitrogen bank. Due to the low pressure, the transport pipe can be CPVC rather than stainless steel. A high degree of enclosure integrity is

80

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

A comprehensive chart showing the performance of an NHS system in a 28 m3 room with n-heptane pan fire of 1-ft diameter is shown in Figure . The protocol follows FM 5580 in terms of core principle, and the fire size is scaled down to the enclosure size. The water/ nitrogen proportions (by mass) are varied from 7-12%. The fire extinction time varied from 100 seconds to 3.5 min (200-300 psi). The oxygen level remained above 12.5%. The performance of NHS extinction behavior at varying nitrogen composition and nitrogen release pressures are shown in Figure with appropriate captions in the graph. Test #6 was nitrogen only up to 4 minutes with water mist turned on and extinction occurred at 5 minutes, showing the decisive effect of the water component. The colored band with Tests #1-#12, except 5 and 6, are hybrid systems at 200 psi release pressure and water varying from 8-10%. Tests #13

and #14 are at a slightly higher-pressure release of 300 psi and water up to 10%, and the fire was extinguished at around 120 seconds. Extinction occurred at 100 seconds at 300 psi and 12% water. This is lower than the NFPA 2001 code requirement. At 300 psi, a hybrid composition extinguished the fire in about 120 seconds or less, close to an inert gas at high-pressure release in other commercial technologies. Within the current data set presented, the shortest extinction (100 seconds) occurred at 12% water and 300 psi nitrogen release pressure (Test # 15). The most striking observation is the comparison of nitrogen only (test #6) and the rest of hybrids with water.

The role of water component in NanoMist Hybrid System: Synergistic effect.

Applications of NanoMist Hybrid The NHS fire protection system is scalable in terms of NHS 50 modules and is cost effective. NHS is a potential alternative for the protection of data centers (electronics spaces), sub-floors and hot and cold aisles containment because of its non-wetting, safe oxygen level and very low release pressure with low SPL. Other applications include gas turbine cooling, machinery rooms, telecommunication facilities, museums, libraries, archives and clean rooms. Additional scenarios include residential and restaurant kitchen fire suppression, medical facilities, medical equipment, food processing and pharmaceutical lab spaces, mission-critical areas applications, transformer cooling (selected size and configurations), local flooding, inerting, air blanketing and preventing auto ignition, and lithium-ion battery explosion mitigation.

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

The central battery model or inverter model as it was earlier known, is still widely in use and popular in emergency lighting. Here, a central power source, i.e., a battery, is installed to power a series of emergency lights in the case of a blackout or power failure. However, as times change, everything must evolve and adapt. Going by that principle, Prolite has now added a new concept of self- contained emergency lighting solutions for greater security and safety at all times. The basic flaw with the inverter model is that if the battery backup mechanism is disabled or fails, all the lights that draw from it will become useless. In a panic situation where people may be trapped in a fire, such a failure can prove fatal and disastrous. Loss of precious lives and property would be too high a price to pay if that happens. But the problem is easily solved with Prolite’s new self- contained lighting solution. Here, each individual light has its own battery which is compact, easily hidden from view and yet ensures maximum efficiency in a blackout or power failure situation. The versatile, Emergency Escape Route Lighting System is available in fixed and adjustable versions, and with a choice of white tones and beam angles. It

delivers very substantial energy savings compared to a luminaire equipped with an equivalent halogen lamp. Installation is easy, as there is no need for a separate driver. And because there is no lamp replacement, maintenance costs are saved. All these factors combine to ensure a very fast return on investment. When it comes to Interiors you never compromise of the looks, and LED lights enhances the experience. Emergency Escape Route Lighting Systems are Compact, Sleek and Surface mounted battery back-up LED Exit lights which would complement and gel with your interiors to give a new/ modern look and would guide you to the exterior safely in emergency scenarios. LED Exit Light System with battery back-up provide you with alternative self- contained emergency lighting which would help you to locate yourself for the interiors of the premises to the exterior quickly/ safely.

Residential Security The Problem – rising crime in large apartment complexes In Urban India, independent homes are unaffordable. People are increasingly buying or leasing apartments, some in gated communities. These apartments offer various amenities and promise safety. The promised safety is in fact absent as can be observed by the rise in crime in these residential complexes. Archaic systems and procedures, that were good for 5 - 6 households per facility, are simply inadequate for larger complexes.

Factors contributing to greater vulnerability Social disparity aside (as this article is not intended to address this), the vulnerability of these complexes has increased due to the following: • Rise in traffic of Vendors, house help, delivery and courier persons. • Most households are ‘empty’ for most of the day with both parents at work and the children at School or

88

INDUSTRIAL SAFETY REVIEW | MARCH 2019

College. • Latchkey kids returning to an empty home. • ‘Neighbourly connect’ is mostly absent. Most of the activities at entry/exit gates in are either not captured or are recorded in registers. The offline nature of this data means that it cannot be used to derive any useful insight. In addition, almost all the systems deployed for security such as visitor logs, CCTV, access control are standalone applications, which are also offline. These older systems and procedures that were effective for individual apartment buildings are inadequate to address the vulnerabilities listed above.

Potential solution. Integrated systems will provide a comprehensive view of security, with analytics that can drive proactive

actions to avoid security issues. Residential complexes are well advised to deploy ‘Premise Security Solutions’ used by Enterprises and large campuses. • Perimeter protection A residential complex need not have very high compound walls as these would make them look like prisons. Tall and aesthetically designed RCC compound walls with a fence mounted on top would give the required protection without ruining the view. Additionally, CCTV cameras, strategically located, should be deployed to create a ‘virtual trip wire’. Depending on the environment and the perceived threat, PTZ cameras should be installed to monitor the areas between the perimeter and the residential block(s). In the event of an intrusion this would trigger the PTZ cameras to zoom in on the affected zone and also send an sms to the Security staff.

» Access Control systems that make it possible for Visitor authentication and validation, even from a remote location, if so desired. Pedestrian and Vehicle access must be restricted. Biometric access control systems should be deployed at all the entry and exit points. Delivery and courier persons must be allowed access only after they are authorised by the individual who they claim to have a parcel for. Authorised Visitor should be issued temporary ‘entry only’ cards and exit permitted only on surrender of the card. Discreetly located cameras should capture the image of such individuals, both at the time of entry and exit, and store the same for a period of time, say, a week. » Boom barriers with RFID readers should be installed at all the vehicle entry points. Authorised vehicles should have RFID tags to enable automatic entry. For vehicles of visitors the same procedure as for ‘visitors on foot’ should be followed. Passengers inside vehicles would be checked

by the bio-metric access control installed at the entry lobby. • Video surveillance » Cameras should be located at all the entry and exit points, lift lobbies and staircases on all floors. Video footage should be saved for around 7-10 days as incidents are likely to be reported within a matter of hours or a few days. » Cameras should also be located in the play areas. • Home Security systems » Integrated video door phone system that can view the person at the door and view the children’s play area. Systems are available that can automatically inform the parent when the ‘latch key’ kid enters the house or raise an alarm if the kid fails to return home within the pre-specified time zone. Where necessary systems can be wired to remotely monitor a room where babies or elders are being cared for.

Caveat Without the ‘buy-in’ of the residents no system, however expensive or sophisticated, will provide

the desired security. Systems and procedures for normal and abnormal situations must be documented and explained to all the residents. The importance of strictly adhering to the procedures must be accepted and followed by the residents. These systems and procedures must become a habit and not a chore.
