Hope Kaufman is a Mennonite woman living in the small Kansas town of Kingdom. A strong woman rooted to her Mennonite heritage and beliefs, she helps her father to run their small quilt shop and has agreed to share her future with her childhood friend Ebbie Miller. What appears to be a peaceful little town, protected by the people’s faith in God, has been subject to recent, religious threats that are beginning to escalate into violent attacks. As Hope travels to the city of Washington to purchase supplies for her quilt shop, she is repeatedly run off the road by an Englisher in a large truck. Several similar attacks are made to other community members and many faithful believers begin to question whether their faith in God is really enough to keep them safe. Jonathon Wiese heads up the new reform to protect the town by bringing weapons into the picture and planning stakeouts to guard the town’s perimeter. His strong, charismatic demeanor strikes up a forbidden curiosity in Hope that she begins to explore. While her heart lies wholly in the Mennonite faith along with Ebbie’s, she can’t fight her feelings towards this charming young man. Tensions begin to rise as the unknown attackers find ways to cross the border into Kingdom and cause damage to a couple of properties in town. Jonathon and his crew become more adamant on the importance of “fighting fire with fire” while Ebbie and many other devout Mennonites are certain that through prayer, God will help these troubled

souls find their way. Hope is caught in the middle, wanting to believe in Jonathon and his plans to protect the town, but still feels a firm connection to her beliefs and continues to do what she knows best; pray. This is the second book in Nancy Mehl’s “Road to Kingdom” series. While both books can easily stand alone, book one (Inescapable) tells the tale of another character, Lizzie Engel, who has fled the town vowing never to return. A string of threatening letters and fear of a stalker leads her back to her hometown. Lizzie has a presence in book two as a friend of Hope Kauffman. Unbreakable is a Mennonite romancethriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seat wanting to know what will happen next. pring is just around the corner. Although there have been several times this winter that have felt like spring was coming early but, being Ohio natives, we all knew it was too good to be true when the frigid winter temperatures hit hard the very next day. But not to fear, Punxsutawney did not see his shadow and we were all promised an early spring. I can hear the birds chirping already, and I can just picture the beautiful countryside getting greener by the minute. Wild flowers will soon be dotting the meadows and woods and newly planted tulips and crocus’ will pop up in front yards and businesses alike. I can’t wait for the smell of freshly cut grass and hay and finally being able shed that winter coat and walk barefoot in the grass once again. Amish farmers will be happy to take advantage of the warmer weather as they prepare their fields for spring planting. Get an idea for how the Amish prepare for each season of the year when you read “An Amish Farmer’s “To-Do” List.” Looking for a store that supplies great home décor as well as an unforgettable experience? Stop in to Audrey’s Attic and check out Audrey Merkle’s eclectic, country, rustic home décor collections. No matter what your mood, the warm friendly atmosphere and cheerful staff is bound to brighten your mood. You may also be surprised to be greeted by some very large and very friendly cats. If your sweet tooth has been tingling and you are in need of a baked treat, stop in to Troyer’s Home Pantry and grab a slice of pie or a delicious cinnamon roll. With two locations in Apple Creek and Wooster, plan to pick up your morning coffee and pastry at the small bakery. Sojourner’s Lodge offers a peaceful and luxurious escape from the stresses of everyday life. While partaking on your journey through the Amish countryside, plan to stay a night or two at one of the lodge suites. Wake up to a beautiful sunrise over the gently rolling hills of Amish farmland and make sure to read through the story for special rates. Easter will be upon us by the end of the month. Local Easter egg hunts will take place in your hometowns and special Easter church services will be attended. Be sure to check out some of your favorite Amish country shops this month, as they may also be featuring a few Easter activities and surprises of their own.

Audrey’s Attic:

On a feel good mission STORY & PHOTOS BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

Audrey Merkle wasn’t really sure of herself or the business world when she found herself venturing into it. The life of a housewife was all that she knew, but something was driving her to strive for something more. While enjoying lunch with her daughter April, in downtown Orrville, April noticed a building for rent just across the street. Merkle begin to imagine beautiful home décor displayed in the large windows and started imagining herself conversing with customers and helping them to find ways to decorate their own homes. “I was naïve and didn’t have any business experience,” said Merkle, owner of Audrey’s Attic. But she made the courageous decision to call the number on the for rent sign and never looked back. In July of 2000, Merkle officially opened the doors of Audrey’s Attic. Stepping through the front doors of Audrey’s Attic, your senses are greeted first. Warm smells of vanilla, cinnamon and mulberry make this unlike any attic you have experienced before, because, truthfully, it is not really an attic at all. 6

’’

People like the style that I have. I like eclectic and unique pieces

You may find vintage inspired items that may remind you of an old shelf or mirror you came across in grandma’s attic. In fact, Merkle encourages customers to bring in some of these unique pieces that may have just been wasting away, and helps customers to restore that old beauty within it. “People like the style that I have. I like eclectic and unique pieces,” said Merkle. Unique, country, rustic primitives fill the shelves. Everything from lamps, rugs and tableware, to canvas pictures, candles and faux floral can be found in Merkle’s shop. Merkle prides herself most on her careful selection of candle lines. “I have put a lot of time and research into my candle selection. They don’t burn

’’

down the center and you will always smell them.” Audrey’s attic carries three candle lines; Keepers of The Light, Swan Creek and Crossroads. Each month, Audrey’s has a new and unique special for customers. For the month of February, Audrey’s held it’s flip flops in February sale; every customer who wore flip flops to the store received a discount. In July, customers are handed flags, that when unrolled, reveal a shopping discount. For the month of March, Audrey’s Attic will be holding their spring extravaganza sale. Shop during the week of March 18 through the 23 and crack open an egg to see what kind of discount lies inside (up to 50 percent off.) Daily door prizes will be awarded

and refreshments will be available. For the entire month of March, customers can expect 30 percent off all paper products, 40 percent off bulbs and accent lights and 25 percent off curtains. Customers who sign up for the mailing list will automatically be mailed a card with a listing of each months specials. Let Audrey know when your birthday is and receive a special card and discount which can be used anytime during the month. “I enjoy getting to know everyone who comes in by name. If Audrey knows you by name, you’re a VIP,” Merkle joked. In fact, if it’s been a few months since she has seen you, she may be giving you a call to make sure things are going all right and just catch up as if you were old friends. As you explore the shelves you may notice a few, furry friends popping out to say hello. Merkle has adopted five cats which can be seen roaming the store any given day, looking for attention and a good belly rub. “Some 8

’’

people come in just to see the cats and the cats always think people come in just for them,” said Merkle. “I love to give people warm and good feelings of being at home in my shop,” said Merkle. “Some people come in just for the experience and don’t buy anything at all and that’s OK.” At the end of the day, Merkle feels good just knowing that for one day, she was able to provide a warm and inviting atmosphere to every customer who stepped into her store. “I don’t do it for the money. I make enough to make ends meet but mostly I do it because I like being talked nicely about at the dinner table,” said Merkle. “Sometimes I feel like my job is more like mission work.” Merkle is on a mission to make all her customers feel better. Audrey’s Attic is located at 147 North Main Street in Orrville. Store hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Thursday until 7 p.m. For more information call 330-683-3384 or visit www.shopaudreysattic.com.

STORY & PHOTOS BY CATIE NOYES • EDITOR

It all started in the humble kitchen of Sarah Troyer. Sarah and her husband Abe lived on a small farm near Apple Creek where they raised chickens and sold the eggs to make ends meet. Troubled times took a toll on the small community and the Troyers needed to find a way to keep their small farm from going under. Sarah soon found herself whipping up some baked goods in her small kitchen from cherished family recipes and sending them along with Abe on his egg routes to help supplement the farm income. The egg business made ingredients readily available to Sarah as she used the egg whites to make angel food cakes and egg yolks to make noodles. 12

Sarah had an exceptional talent for baking and her baked goods caught on like wildfire within the small community. Soon, the demand for Sarah’s fine baking became greater than the demand for eggs. In 1966, a small red barn was built on their property to house a small bakery for Sarah to work in. By 1974, the Troyer’s had moved into the town of Apple Creek and built a small bakery nestled in the bend in the road on State Route 250. Although the business has grown, it still remains in this location at the corner of State Route 250 and Apple Creek Road. Sarah worked long and hard to keep up with the rapid growing demand of

Stop in for a sweet treat! her old fashioned recipes. Paul Troyer, Abe and Sarah’s son and current owner of Troyer’s Home Pantry, explained that these old fashioned recipes are still used in the bakery today. “We have 45 different pies made from recipes handed down from mother and grandmother,” said Troyer. “We are primarily known for our pies,” said Troyer. The extensive list of pies includes flavors such as blueberry crème, cherry crumb, blackberry, raspberry, German chocolate, peanut butter and custard just to name a few. Troyer feels their second most popular baked good is their cinnamon rolls. These mouth watering treats are whipped up every night from their signature sweet dough, rolled up with cinnamon and baked to golden brown perfection. To top it all off, they are covered with a maple frosting before served to customers. Complete with a fresh cup of coffee, one has just created a breakfast to die for. Many customers take advantage of this peaceful and delicious smelling atmosphere to enjoy a fresh cup of coffee and a pastry. Small dining tables, draped in red and white and black checked table clothes, line the walls of the quaint, café style bakery. Customers share quiet conversations, while others escape from the office for a peaceful change of scenery to work and enjoy fresh pastries. Pies and cinnamon rolls are not the only delectable goodies that keep customers coming back for more. Troyers also offers four different flavors of angel food cake, breads and rolls, cookies and homemade Amish “TROYERS” CONTINUED ON PAGE 33

SHAKER FURNITURE: STANDS THE TEST OF TIME

S

haker Furniture, developed by the namesake, has a very distinctive style. The furniture is known and well received for its simplicity, innovative joinery, quality and functionality. Shakers called themselves a “United Society,” this society lived through their belief of the “Second Coming of Jesus Christ.” The Believers preached that the path to salvation lay in hard work, abstention from worldly pleasures and constant prayer. They also practiced celibacy and a cooperative lifestyle, one in which all property was jointly owned. Shakers today are mostly known for their cultural contributions. However, it was the Society’s religious beliefs that inspired the ascetic design of Shaker Furniture. Shaker Furniture was initially made for use within the Shaker community; however, the simple beauty of the early Shaker pieces soon became broadly recognized and publicly available. As they began making furniture, Shaker craftsmen principally followed contemporary Federalist styles, with their ideals of symmetry, proportion and balance. But they simplified these neoclassical lines even further, to an almost ascetic degree. Mother Ann Lee, the movement’s founder, advocated that a piece be made “plain and simple... unembellished by any superfluities

28

which add nothing to its goodness or durability.” The first detail about Shaker furniture that will come to your attention is its simple, straight, uniform lines. The Shaker ladder-back chair is maybe the most recognizable of all the Shaker pieces. The characteristics of Shaker-inspired furniture are mostly straight lines, right angles, the occasional gentle arch and a simple elegance in absence of intricate ornamentation. The Shaker ladder-back chair usually follows these guidelines and is very typical of the Shaker style. The design is characterized by unadorned Shaker-style turnings, a comfortably dished hardwood seat and strongly braced legs for maximum stability and durability. Comfortable back support is ensured by the use of ergonomically curved backsplats and stem-bent back posts. Other, more modern, versions of this style of furniture are currently available and include entertainment centers, bed frames, dining sets, benches and seating. Pieces like entertainment centers and storage options have retained the unique handcrafted Shaker style, made out of solid wood. Available in designs for every room of the house, you will find that Shaker furniture tips its hat to the lessons of the past. An era where there was no real concept of retiring your belongings. This furniture was built to last a lifetime, if not a few lifetimes.

noodles, which are also a big hit amongst the tourists. “We are most proud of our ability to keep our quality up,” said Troyer. “Next year we will be going on 40 years (in the current location) and the quality of our products is as good now as it was then.” Being a family business, Troyer and his sons bought the business from Troyer’s dad . “A lot of times third generation are not interested in taking over the family business,” said Troyer. “I am proud of my sons for taking on the business and continuing to make it successful.” Branden, Ryan and Jordan Troyer will all play a role in keeping the family business successful in the coming years. Currently Troyer’s does not have any plans for expansion but they are always looking for new ideas to continue to make their small operation successful. Troyer’s distributes products from Youngstown to Toledo and provides services to many restaurants and stores throughout Ohio. A second location can be found conveniently in downtown Wooster on East North Street. Troyer explained this location was built in 1985 to produce their brownies, oatmeal raisin cookies and sugar free pies. The

location offers all the same delicious baked goods as the Apple Creek location and serves as a drive through for those looking to grab a coffee and donut for the road. Naturally, the holidays prove to be a very busy time for the bakery. Troyer said 14,000 pies are made during the Thanksgiving week and 6,000 pies are made around the week of Christmas. Troyer enjoys seeing the familiar faces of regular customers stopping in for their morning bite and loyal customers who return during their visits to Amish country. There are times when the tables are full and the shop is bustling with conversation and other times when only a couple customers sit quietly enjoying their treats. The next time you’re passing by, stop in and try the pie of the month. Troyer’s Home Pantry is located at 668 West Main Street (US 250) in Apple Creek. Store hours are weekdays from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information call 330-698-4182 or visit www.troyershomepantry.com. The Wooster retail store is located at 317 East North Street and is open Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m.-4 p.m. and Saturday from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information call 330-263-1990.

:

e are all on our own earthly sojourn.” A line from the Arran Stephens book, Journey to the Luminous, it was a line that resonated deep with Gwen Miller, as she debated on the perfect name for her luxurious yet rustic lodge tucked in the Amish countryside. “In some way, we are all on our own sojourn or journey in life,” said Miller. A sojourner is described as a person who is residing in a place temporarily or on a temporary journey, explained Miller. Sojourner’s Lodge was then born out of the idea that they could be that temporary place to reside while one is partaking on their “journey.” This journey could be as simple as planning your next vacation to Amish country. The picturesque countryside

38

of gently rolling farmland is waiting just outside the cabins front door. As you grab your morning coffee or tea and step out on the front porch, you are greeted by the morning sun as its rays dance across the fields, across the lake and poke through the trees of the woods. The countryside comes to life as farmers tend to their animals and their fields. “A lot of people love the view,” said Miller. “We are surrounded by farms and all our neighbors are Amish.” Miller explains, that while many people plan to spend their days shopping, many are also curious to learn more about the Amish lifestyle. “You can walk down the road any given day and see and experience the Amish culture firsthand,” said Miller. Peace and quiet is the most sought after experience for anyone partaking on a vacation. Miller said many guests compliment on just how peaceful

and serene the lodge is. “People are looking to escape the stresses of their everyday lives and find a peaceful retreat.” Sojourner’s offers this peaceful setting while still providing all the luxuries and comforts of home. Duane Miller, husband and coowner, purchased the land which was once a large farm. The land was sold in parcels and 20 acres of it was purchased to accommodate the lodge, built by Duane himself. Duane originally came up with the idea to build the lodge when the Miller’s son was young. “It was something for me to do while staying home with our son,” said Gwen Miller. Today Sojourner’s houses six different suites. Four of the suites are lodge suites and can be found in the cedar-sided building while the other two suites are a part of the duplex style log cabin tucked along the edge of the woods. “All the suites feature top-of-theline amenities,â€? said Miller. Some of these amenities include kitchens with a refrigerator, dishwasher, glass cook top, microwave and hickory cabinetry. A spacious living room features a ďŹ replace, at screen, highdeďŹ nition television with Directv. and DVD player, and sofas and loveseats. Most suites have two, private master bedrooms that share a bathroom with a Jacuzzi for two, as well as a standing shower. Every suite has a rustic look and feel from oak and hickory styled furniture and photos taken of the local Amish countryside hanging on the walls, yet all the luxuries of an upscale retreat. With spring just around the corner, the temperatures are beginning to warm and the landscape is beginning to come to life once again. The grass is greening and the owers are blooming. Venture outdoors and take a walk on one or both of the hiking trails. The 40

’’

trails wind through the woods and are met by a 60 foot bridge which crosses a ravine. Guests often just enjoy relaxing on a bench in the courtyard where they can sit with a good book and look out over the countryside. Many enjoy taking in the wildlife that can be found in the woods and down by the three-acre lake. Miller ďŹ nds that many people love to sit and relax by the lake. In the evenings, guests can enjoy one another’s company by gathering around the ďŹ re pit. Couples can share the peaceful evening alone or in the presence of others swapping stories. Firewood and grills are readily available to all guests. Sojourner’s is always offering different specials and seasonal packages throughout the year. Multiple night discounts run all year round and include 10 percent off a three to four night stay, 15 percent off a ďŹ ve to six night stay and 20 percent

off a stay of seven nights or more. Romantic packages can be customized and gift baskets can be arranged for that special someone. Sojourner’s also has a small gift shop where customers can pick up Sojourner’s merchandise as well as Sojourner’s homemade maple syrup. “We make our own maple syrup and only sell it here in our shop,” said Miller. “It’s something we decided to do just for fun.” Miller said they recently tapped around 300 trees and accumulated 55 gallons of maple syrup. Miller said, Sojourner’s biggest success is being able to provide a beautiful place to stay and keeping it that way. She feels she is truly able to measure her success by the amount of repeat customers she sees and the many new ones she meets that have been referred to her by other guests who enjoyed their stay. “We are all on a journey,” said Miller. “I love meeting new people as well as seeing the same familiar faces. You get to hear a lot about different people’s journeys.” Sojourner’s Lodge is located just fifteen minutes from Berlin and Walnut Creek, so visitors can spend their day shopping and then take the winding path through the relaxing countryside to conclude their day at Sojourner’s. “We want people to know that we are a luxurious place to stay as well as a peaceful retreat,” said Miller. Sojourner’s lodge is located at 2156 Durstine Road, Dundee. To make a reservation call 330-359-5320 or visit www.sojournerslodgeohio.com for more information.
