the news Due to take place in Central Birmingham in June 2014, the NVAs were created in 2012 to celebrate the small, independent businesses that keep the vintage scene alive. They are open to any business or individual in the UK that feel they deserve recognition for their hard work and passion for vintage and antiques. The second annual awards sees several new categories added to its selection, including Best Vintage Artist, which includes graphic artists, traditional painters and photographers, and Best Vintage Entertainment, which opens up the awards to DJs, burlesque artists and other event performers. The NVAs have also brought on board two new award sponsors; the Vintage Academy for the Breakthrough Business Award, and Le Keux Cosmetics for the new Beauty & Grooming Award. The Breakthrough Business Award is for businesses formed within the last two years and the Beauty & Grooming Award will be presented to an individual hair stylist or make-up artist. In addition the Best Pin Up Award, last year sponsored by Vintage Life magazine, is now free to enter, as is the Vintage Directory Personality award which has been set up for the public to nominate their favourite person in the vintage industry. “We were absolutely delighted with how the first ever National Vintage Awards went last year, so we knew we just had to repeat it, especially as we had so much positive feedback,” said Kate Molloy, who organises the awards, “After this year’s awards, we listened to the ideas and suggestions from the businesses involved and have added and removed categories as a result. We hope this new structure will prove popular and we know next year’s event will be even better than this year!” Alongside tickets to the evening event, presentation with an official ‘NVA Winner’ award, and the title of ‘Best in the UK’, winners will enjoy a comprehensive winner’s package including a year’s free advertising in The Vintage Directory, publicity via Le Keux Vintage Salon’s website which gets over a million hits per year and a goody bag full of vintage treats. All nominees will receive a complimentary ‘PR pack’ to help them draw in public votes, including an example press release, flyers, and also a month on the NVA website during the voting process, complete with a website link. Date: Thursday 19th June 2014 Venue: Fazeley Studios, 191 Fazeley Street, Digbeth, Birmingham B5 5SE Doors Open: 19:30 – 1:00 (No admissions after 21:00) Awards Ceremony: 21:00 Age 18+ only

A collection of rare cars, motorbikes and planes has gone up for auction in Wanaka. More than 50 items, including a 1924 Bentley, a 1938 Harley Davidson and a Tiger Moth aircraft, went under the hammer for the Warbirds over Wanaka Community Trust. Visitors and locals alike were impressed. “It’s an absolutely wonderful car,” says one visitor. “If I could afford it I’d buy it. It’s a good price for this part of the world. It’d be twice this in the UK I guess.” Warbirds Over Wanaka was approached by Webb’s Auction House to host the auction. It is now hoped it will grow into a major annual event. A number of items created a buzz, and the standouts included an original Norton motorcycle. “It’s one of only a couple in the world that are left and it’s an absolutely stunning museum quality,” says Ed Taylor of Warbirds Over Wanaka.

Webb’s says it has had a huge amount of interest, both locally and internationally. “The interest has been very broad and engaged from both a local perspective and nationally and internationally,” says Neil Campbell of Webb’s Auction House. Final numbers are still being crunched, so the total amount of money raised is not known. But hundreds of people attended today, and organisers expect the next auction to attract just as much attention. EASTER at the Great Central Railway this year will see much more than the trains being driven by steam. The award winning Leicestershire heritage line is staging a grand vintage country fair at Quorn and Woodhouse station, to welcome in Spring. Traditional steam driven gallopers to delight all ages will provide plenty of noise and colour to set the mood.

The TTC is offering free rides on a vintage streetcar to thank Beach residents and businesses for putting up with construction on Kingston Road last year.

They’ll be accompanied by two famous showman’s traction engines, Renown and Repulse providing unique photo opportunities. There will be at least 10 other traction engines on display, with vintage cars, commercial vehicles, steam sawing display and wooden dray wheels also having their steel tyres fitted. This year GCR is playing host to the Midland Vintage Tractor Club who are bringing a display of bygone machines. On Easter Saturday the road engines will gloriously parade through Quorn village! “This will be a wonderful celebration of all things steam,” said GCR marketing manager Kate Tilley. “There will be something at all of our stations but we are sure our visitors will be thrilled by the special atmosphere at our Quorn country fair. “Come and enjoy the sights and sounds and dance to some live music in our real ale tent. “Let’s raise a glass to a cracking event.” Not to be outdone by the road machines, on the rails three steam stars will haul a busy train service between Loughborough and Leicester. Print your pattern (Click here to download it). Cut a 30 x 30 cm piece of fabric. Fold it in half on the short side and pin your pattern. I like bending the pins a bit so the pattern will lay flat (or at least flatter). Cut the two layers of fabric following the pattern.

Turned inside out:

You will need to tie a knot in athe middle of the fabric to make the buuny ears shape. Sew around the two pieces together, inside out, leaving a 1cm gap to the edge of the fabric.

Make sure that you leave a 2cm gap as shown in the photo below. So you can turn it inside out when you finish.

Now we need to glue your pretty bunny ears onto the headband. Put a bit of hot glue on the top of headband (wherever you want to position the ears ) then place the knot of the bunny ears onto the hot glue and hold it until the glue sets.

D.I.Y. BABY 33

Optional: If you want to add pom pom trim, stitch it on (along the edge with the ribbon), using a scant seam allowance.

Prepare Materials Stitch the smaller rectangle (polka dot) to the larger rectangle (Eiffel Towers) along the 5 3/4 inch edge to form the front cover. Press. Fold the ribbon in half, and baste it in place, 1 inch from the top left hand side as shown in the photo.

Assemble Tissue Cover With the right sides facing, layer the tissue cover on top of the white lining. Pin together. Stitch together along the top and bottom edges using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Turn out the right way. Press.

Sew Front to Back Lay the tissue cover on your table as shown in the photo above. Turn down the top edge 2 1/4 inches. Press. Turn up the bottom edge 1 3/4 inches (along the seam line where the Eiffel Tower fabric meets the polka dots). Press. The Tissue cover should measure 5 1/4 inches x 3 1/2 inches. Stitch both sides together as shown. Overlock raw edges. Clip corners. Turn out right way using a turning tool. Press. Note: The top flap will overlap the bottom flap by approx 1/2 inch.

Stitch Sides of Tissue Cover Turn out the Right Way and Press. The Tissue Covers are sized to hold a small pack of travel tissues. They are great to have on hand in your school bag, hand bag, or suitcase. Of course, I couldn’t stop at one and made up a few to use when travelling.

Easy Bunny Cupcake Candy Toppers

Aren’t these Cupcake Toppers adorable? These little bunnies are made from candy and are totally edible (and yummy!). Learn how to make your own candy toppers below. Make numbers, initials, shapes, animals and more! It’s super easy and the result is adorable. All you need are a few supplies and you’re ready to make your own Candy Cupcake Toppers! How to Make Candy Cupcake Topper 1. Print out whatever design you want to make a topper of. * (I printed a sheet of three different bunny silhouettes.) 2. Put a piece of wax paper over the top of your printed designs. 2. Melt Candy Melts according to directions. I added mine to these bottles for easier design control. 3. Add details that you want to show on the topper. I made pink eyes and pink ears on the white bunnies.

D.I.Y. BABY 41

4. Use another color to draw the outline and then fill in the design.

5. Allow the candy melts to cool and harden completely before peeling off the wax paper.

* Don’t forget that you’re working from the BACK side of the design! So if you’re doing letters, numbers or words, the design needs to be reversed before you print it out. Have fun making these fun candy toppers! Be sure to show off your finished product if you make them. I’d love to see them! :) If you love to make cupcakes, be sure to try my Cookies & Cream Cupcakes and my Strawberry Filling Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting!

6. Once you peel them off the wax paper, flip them over to see the finished cupcake topper!
