Journey Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) Photographer by Siti Nuralya Bt Shamsudin

Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) is one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world. Founded in 1929, the former Forest Research Institute became a fully-fledged statutory body, governed by the Malaysian Forestry Research and Development Board (MFRDB) under the Ministry of Primary Industries, in 1985. Presently, both FRIM and MFRDB are under the purview of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The Institute sits on a 545-ha site adjacent to the Bukit Lagong Forest Reserve in the Kepong municipality, 16 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur. FRIM was awarded the MS ISO 9001:2000 certification in December 2007. It was gazetted as a ‘Natural Heritage Site’ on 10 February 2009 under the National Heritage Act 2005, and officially declared as a National Heritage on 10 May 2012. The Institute is helmed by Dato’ Dr Abd Latif Mohmod as its Director General since May 2008. FRIM researchers have acquired a sound track record over the years winning innumerable awards for their work. The awards included those for research on rubber wood utilisation at the International Cologne Furniture Fair (1995); and for its oil palm fibre extractor at the 25th Geneva International Invention Exhibition (1997), the International Union of Forestry Research Organisations (IUFRO) Scientific Achievement Award (1995, 2000 & 2010), Toray International Science Award (1999); Petronas Inventor’s Awards (1992, 1994), National Inventor’s Award (1995 & 1997), MINDEX/INNOTEX Award (1993, 1995); Langkawi Award (1991), Public Services Department Award (1996), National Science Award (1993); and Japanese International Award for Young Agricultural Researchers (2009 & 2013).

CROWN SHYNESS The “crown-shyness” phenomenon, popularly known among FRIM staff and the public, is formed by Dryobalanops aromatica “kapur”. The kapur trees in the campus were introduced as early as the 1950. However, there is another site in campus where the phenomenon may be observed among the clusters of Shorea resinosa or meranti belang. The breathtaking formation from the stands of Shorea resinosa or meranti belang can be seen 150 m from the FRIM’s Perah Campsite entrance of the Rover Track.

MALAY TRADITIONAL HOUSE Rumah Terengganu was built entirely from Chengal wood and without a single nail, this traditional house was relocated from Pulau Rusa, Terengganu and it was reconstructed in FRIM. The neighbouring Rumah Melaka adds to our collection of traditional timber houses.

DREAMER 18

SALLEH NATURE TRAIL This trail is named after FRIM’s first Director General, Tan Sri Dr. Salleh Mohd Nor, who retired in October 1995. Tan Sri Salleh played a leading role in the conversion of FRIM to a statutory body in 1985, effected through an Act of Parliament. His numerous accomplishments are related to sustainable resource management and love of nature, the forest and a sustainable environment. The history of FRIM plantation forests is highlighted through this trail. It is 710 meters and slightly undulating, which winds along a patch of natural forest and into a forest plantation established as early as 1928. It takes about an hour to walk through this trail. Trees such as Dryobalanops aromatica, Dryobalanops oblongifolia, Aquilaria malaccensis,, Intsia palembanica, Shorea macrophyla and Calamus filipendulus are some of the plants that can encountered along the way.

KAPITAN KELING MOSQUE Photographer by Siti Nuralya Bt Shamsudin

Opening hours: 1:00pm to 5:00pm (Saturday to Thursday) and 3:00pm to 5:00pm (Friday).Admission is free but visitors are required to wear robes which are provided at the mosque. Guided tours are available at the Information Centre located at the ground floor of the minaret. One of the main houses of worships along George Town’s “Street of Harmony”, the Kapitan Keling Mosque was built and designed by German architect Henry Alfred Neubronner. With its Moghul-style domes adorned with crescents and stars sitting on exquisite Gothic, Moorish and Roman arches and towering minaret, the mosque which was originally a humble single-storey brick structure, now stands a regal landmark and one of the country’s most beautiful and historically rich mosques. Founded in 1801 by well-respected headman of the Indian Muslims community, Caudeer Mohudeen, Kapitan Keling Mosque is a sight to behold with it magnificent chandelier, calligraphy panels and stained glass windows featuring the Star of David. At dusk, against the backdrop of an orange sky, the cream-coloured mosque is nothing short of magnificent

DREAMER 21

The Kapitan Keling Mosque along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling,is one of the best known mosque in Penang. Before the construction of the Penang State Mosque, the Kapitan Keling Mosque was used as the state mosque of Penang, since it is the largest historic mosque in George Town. The Kapitan Keling Mosque was named after Caudeer Mohuddeen, The head of the Indian Muslim community credited to have built it around 1800.The name “kapitan keling” is used to denote the headman of the South Indian Muslim community. The term “keling” is a derived from the ancient Hindu kingdom on the Coromandel coast of South India, and the local Hokkien community corrupts the word to derive “keling-na” for Indians in general, particularly those from South India (The North Indians are pooled together with another term, “banggali”, though they are not a necessarily from Bengal). The title “Kapitan” is a corruption of the English word “Captain”, and is used to denote the leader of the community. Similarly, the leader of the Chinese community during that period is called a Kapitan China.

PADANG KOTA LAMA Photographer by Siti Nuralya Bt Shamsudin

Padang Kota Lama, or simply called The Padang, is the parade ground and playing field created by the British colonials in the civic district of George Town. It is bordered by Fort Cornwallis on one side, Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, Jalan Padang Kota Lama and Light Street. The name “The Esplanade is usually used collectively to denote the whole area that includes Padang Kota Lama and Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, although historically The Esplanade refers only to Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, between the bend in the road and where the road ends near the Cenotaph. Padang Kota Lama is located in one of the oldest section of George Town and was among the earliest part of town to be cleared. When Francis Light landed at the cape in 1786, he found that this part of the island was uninhabited there were small Malay and Acehnese riverine settlements along Sungai Pinang and densely forested. The land was flat but overgrown with hardwood trees such as the Penaga Laut (ironwood). The northern shore was sandy while the eastern shore was covered with mangrove swamp. Light was said to have blasted silver coins into the forest to induce the workers to clear the land. These coins would have landed in the area where Padang Kota Lama is located today. Penang Hill is the highest point in Penang Island.

DREAMER 25

At Padang Kota Lama, Sir Francis Light would have never thought that the fort he built more than two centuries ago are still intake and filled with the everlasting rich history of Penang. The star shaped Fort Cornwallis marks the starting point where Francis Light and his crew from British East India Company landed in Penang on 11th August 1786 to “take possession” of the island from the Sultan of Kedah. It was later named after the Governor-General of Bengal, Charles Marquis Cornwallis. The Fort was built initially with nibong (palm trunk) stockade with no permanent structures, covering an area of 417.6 sq. ft. And it was only during Colonel R.T. Farquhar’s term as Governor of Penang in 1804 that the fort was rebuilt with bricks and stones by convict labor dispatched from India.

The construction of Fort Cornwallis was completed in 1810 during Norman Macalister’s term as the Governor of Penang with the cost of about 80,000 Spanish Dollars. Although was originally built for the Royal artillery troops and the military, it was used more on administrative rather than defense. In its entire history, the fort had never been engaged in any battle even when the Japanese took over Penang from the British during World War 2.
