Biograghy Di Yang, an interior design student at the Academy of Art UniversitySan Francisco. She born and grew up in Taiyuan, China, and she has interior job experiences in Taiyuan. She has a lot of passion for interior design.She thinks the different cultures could bring many of new idea for her design experience. That is why she came to the USA and continue to study. She loves to travel and likes to record the different architectural cultures of each city, to visit and learn modern interior architecture.As a young designer, she has been exploring the relationship between space and people. She believes spaces serve users, and people interact with spaces. Di like to experience new technology and has been learning and searching the mutual development of hightechnology and interior space. Her goal is that achieves the standards of international interior design and can content client requirements in the interior design for different countries.

View of the Original Geneva Car Barn as it appeared in the early 1970s.

The building was the Geneva Car Barn and Powerhouse, and it has been abandoned. It is located at 2301 San Jose Ave, SF, and has a basement, attic and two full floors. The total area is 19,418 square feet. This building will rebuilt for the non-profit, Innovation and Information Commons Laboratory. The client is a partnership between the San Francisco city government and high-tech companies. Because this location has City College of San Francisco and two secondary schools nearby, and is also close to a large transportation station and residential area, users will be people from the local neighborhoods and youths. The building will provide enough space to help people develop technical skills and understand what will be happening in the future. We hope to help them prepare for the future by getting them excited about understanding and learning technology.

Exisiting Building “Built at a time when San Francisco's streetcars were drawn, the massive Geneva Office Complex and Powerhouse was constructed to serve the City's first streetcar line in 1901� . ( Support - CAST - Community Arts Stabilization Trust. https://cast-sf.org/support/ ) It was designed by the Reid Brothers (who also designed the Fremont Hotel and the Cliff House). The powerhouse housed large electric generators for the line, so it has ample space with no columns making it a unique architectural style. In 1985, the building was declared a San Francisco city landmark. And it was heavily damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. In 1998, the powerhouse faced demolition, but the community convinced Mayor Willie Brown to save the building. Since that time of the earthquake, the building has sat unused at the corner of Savn Jose and Geneva Avenues. The powerhouse may become vulnerable and need to be reinforced, but its architectural features make it well suited as an activity space to accommodate many people. The ownership of the building was transferred to the Department of Recreation and Parks. They completed a seismic retrofit to the structure that addresses some of the significant concerns with the stability of the building in 2006. Client Profile The client for this project is the San Francisco government work with high-tech companies. The client's goal is to promote high-tech to families, and to improve the efficiency and quality of life of people. High-tech is no longer limited to the tool of companies, or high-end occasions, but belongs to everyone. They want to popularize their product in every family, such as Virtual Reality. touch screen table. How they work with high - tech, understanding the future of high technology will be the trend in life. Most companies already have education programs for people. High- tech project will feature free technology-based programs for tech companies to give to community members and a space for self-study and exchange. It will bring vitality to this bustling community, also increase opportunities of job


User Profile The population of the community is about 27,404, and has 8,347 families. Majority of household have children. Also, there are large-scale educational institutions nearby. That information reminds us that the project could has younger, innovative and originality idea to attract customers. Users also include people who want to learn high-tech skills, because new technology experience and courses are provided. People will also learn about the convenience that high technology brings to life and how to use it quickly in the future. The Lab should have space or activities that are appropriate for family or a group to discuss and study.

Site The building is on the corner of San Jose Ave. and Geneva Ave. Behind the building is a Cameron beach train yard. A parking lot, BART station and a few restaurants are across the street. The main entrance of the building will be on San Jose Ave.

The Outer Mission district has high traffic. Behind the building is MUNI train garage, and a large BART station across the street, so there is high traffic in this corner. Controlling the flow of people into the building is a challenge. Also, there are only two or three restaurants nearby. Because of the heavy traffic and no place where people can sit down, the building has an excellent opportunity to create a place to relex. There are three schools around the neighborhood, and the proportion of the adolescent population has increased to make the community more rejuvenated. According to research, students will benefit to learn high-tech. while the building has historical, but add young elements is an excellent feature for the community. Additionally, because there are so many residences nearby, families are also an essential part of the users.

Acoustics Among the challenges of the project is the fact that MUNI trains are very close to the building and may be security risks when people come to the site. Secondly, because the building is on the corner, the noise is also a big problem. Sound-absorbing materials are necessary, but how to allocate good space for quiet can be challenging.

Climate Through the survey, there has plenty of sunshine and rain. San Francisco is a warm city that abundant sunshine bring more opportunity to create. With enough sunlight, installing solar panels is a way to save energy. This building has a skylight and lots of windows, so it gives plenty of light into interior space, also could have outside seating available for people to chat with. The project provides the opportunity for solar panels on the roof and great views on the northwest side.

Concept Statement Evolution is a process of change, development and time moving forward. The Innovation and Information Commons Laboratory ( I² LAB ) is a place that provides and spreads future technology from high-tech companies to people to learn and understand. The Geneva car barn and powerhouse has experienced a long history, and now it will have a new start. The concept of the design represents an evolution of using past and present to unlock the future's possibilities. The interior space is a contrast in classic architecture and while expressing people's pursuit and wishes for the future. In this Lab, people can experience the latest equipment in the future and be able to understand new materials and new scientific trends. Young people can learn and develop technical skills for free, and also be exposed to opportunities with high-tech companies. The goal of my client is to make technology accessible to everyone. I2 LAB wants to help prepare people for the future by getting them excited about high tech.

Keep the past of the buildings alive with some original existing envelope, following current style and designing new spaces. The space uses traditional materials and lines to reflect the past. Also, Using soft curves to represent we use a variety of ways to arrive a goal, such us multimedia technology, computer, phone and reading from book at present and future. Also, that is a trend of modern expression and represents a transformation of time moving forward.

Building Analysis The building has two parts, the general office building, which is higher, and the warehouse. The first part is unreinforced masonry building ( UMB ) and with supplemented steel frame for support. The second is a composite of masonry with steel frame. They both are type III construction.

Block diagram According to the floor plan of the building, the first floor is divided into three parts representing the past, present, and future. Through the planning of the space, the interactive space is near the main entrance to attract people, and also has enough space to hold events. The classrooms and office suite are arranged upstairs, which maintains privacy and good circulation. 25

The space has old material that represents the shadow of the past that is a big part of evolution. Experience, lessons of the past can affect a development of present and future. There is no technology in this space to represent the past and to encourage people to talk to each other. The staircase is a focal point in this area. It uses modern materials that are glass and steels combined with the wood seating that looks like old railroad ties as the base. Stairs also relate to the concept looking at the past from different angles, and finding new ideas in the future.

Café Although Café is a small place, it is an important part of attracting customers. It will provide food and beverages, which can increase customer flow. For example, people who pass by want to take a break or feel hunger will come in. It is also necessary to provide food for significant events. The Café will provide beverage and dessert. Technology Experience Area

Front of The entrance of Technology experience area is seating area for Lobby.

According to my search, High-tech experience is very popular now, such as Virtual reality, touch screen, and projector technology. They are displayed using technology on different way for multiple fields. This area chooses high-definition display and virtual reality technology to explain high-tech research at present. The experience for visitors is unique and personal. The purpose of this area is for people to be able to understand the development of technology. Technology’s creation stories from the past and present will all be presented in this area to reflect evolution. Using soft curved lines symbolizes flexibility and containment to represent present time that is part of the process for high-tech evolution. Different colors on the floor finish can help people with way finding. Users can reach separate areas through the curved walls,, and each area shows the high - tech achievements of different generations.

Base to the acoustical analysis of the building, the technology experience area was designed by advanced soundproofing materials, Air- Claro from Decoustics to solve the noise problems. A 3 form recycled luminous acrylic box and LED lights will provide low-key lighting. This space requires a lot of screen and computer supporting, so reducing direct lighting is necessary for best user experience. The East Wall is a timeline of Technology’s development through projectors. It talks about the evolution of the high-tech industry from the past and the present, unlocks the future. And the future part uses a sensor screen because there is an unknown field. It keeps the imagination, creativity and innovation. The South Wall is an audio exhibit station. It is a straightforward way of learning the benefit of technology, such as environment production and work efficiency. Windows of this area have a glass screen, and through it, the illumination of the projector can project images or videos to attract people’s eyes who are standing outside of the building. These screens promote the understanding of high-tech functionality.

Hospitality My client HGI has purchased 1540 Broadway, Oakland, CA 94612, a property in the center of downtown Oakland, California. The property currently has a small two-story retail structure. HGI plans to demolish the existing structure, and has hired an architect to develop plans for a new downtown boutique hotel. The hotel will primarily serve business guests, but some tourists are expected as well. It will have eight stories, plus a rooftop sky bar. The sky bar will provide cocktails, musical entertainment, and light hors d'oeuvres from the restaurant kitchen (via a dedicated elevator). In addition, the building will have two basement levels for parking. The total area of the hotel is 11150.8 sf2 . The hotel’s purpose is to provide more people to provide interactive space, not only for guests who live in the hotel also native people. the hotel Influenced by Oakland’s prestigious sports events that attracted more people have conversations. The hotel’s main function space includes a restaurant, cocktail lounge, ballroom, banquet room and rooftop sky bar.

A hotel is a place that provides many opportunities for people to interact and connect with each other. The concept for this hotel is to create public spaces to promote this interaction both between the physical spaces, and between the people – whether they are locals or travel guests. Oakland is a city full of energy, vitality, and a passionate love for sports and there local teams. The sky bar on the top floor is open to all people who like sports and social gatherings. The second floor will have flexibility in the form of movable walls that allow for small group, or large groups to interact. The hotel’s value focus on social gatherings and groups activities to promote people’s communication.


Specific Values for Users According to the research, I found out Oakland is a fantastic place to achieve fitness goals of whatever level desired. A lot of sports around Oakland that affected the city. So many people join the sports activities, such as marathons, bicycle race, football, baseball game, and Kayak & Canoe competition. There vare also weather for hiking and a variety of parks, many of which are organized to explore the city. Also there has the most famous game the NBA basketball.The spirit of sports is “Perseverance�, which makes Oakland’s life more colorful, also gave the city a new value. According to the project requirements that this hotel is an extended-stay model hotel, meaning target executive business guests who are visiting Oakland for extended periods of time. Throught rearching, Most of the people stay in Oakland are young and middle-aged (18-44), so I anticipate the users who want to have a healty living, interested in sports and the pursue quality of life.

H.o.A Multicultural Community Center The community center is intended to welcome new refugees and provide them with a space for social services, education, job training and community connection as they journey toward self-sufficiency and adjust to life in a new city. The building is located in Pacific Northwest Multicultural Community Services, Portland.


Concept Aggregation The H.O.A. Community Center is a place for refugees and immigrants to gather and learn new ways to improve their lives and adapt to a new living environment. My design concept takes on the form of hexagons to symbolize the act of gathering. The hexagon shape fit uniformly into each other to form a larger structure. One example found in nature is the beehive. The main feature of the space, located at the center of the floor plan, is a movable system of furniture and partition that can be reconfigure to support both large group activities and well as be separated to smaller gathering. Surrounding this main focal point is spaces of social gatherings, learning and career development. Our values concentrate on unity and diversity. Our purpose is to promote the integration of different cultures and backgrounds to work towards a common goal.

I focus on the community room because it is an important space for people to communicate and learn from each other, so I will put in furniture on the hexagon carpet. The pathway could go through the carpet and combine with the private space. Also each space is a group, and they could be grouped together into a large activity, or they also could be separate to a small group for discussions.

Working at Home with Retail The building is 156 SF that one floor. My client is a young fashion entrepreneurs who have just establish their business would rather bring their work to home. In her working team, she has three working partners – pattern designer, dressmaker, and online store worker “Romance with masculinity, classic with fashion” is her design orientation. Passion for life is the source of her design.


Client LIU MIN

My client Liu Min is a promising young costume designer who has just completed her study abroad. In school, she has created her own brand and opened an online store. Since her life and her design are inter-dependent, she wants her new house to accommodate her work and her clothing store.


Concept

The movable partition could be opened or closed at any time, and the space is thus adjustable. Such flexible division meets the demand for both privacy and openness. Though work is inseparable with her life, she still needs private space from time to time. In a clothing store open to the public, the customers are able to observe the designer’s working process and design process. While when she needs her personal space, the planks would be assembled to create a private space.
