Well, DIY does, so we’ve made a special 2015 festival guide just for you - to make sure you can head to the hottest events in the UK and beyond, seeing both your favourite bands, and upand-comers who will be playing main stages this time next year. There are interviews with some of the must see bands from this year’s festival circuit too, including Slaves, Alt-J, Marmozets, Courtney Barnett, Mumford & Sons, Shura, Wolf Alice and loads more. In addition, this year sees DM’s strike up a new partnership with SSR (www.s-s-r.com) to support those young people who aspire to work on the other side of the music industry. SSR started as a recording studio in Manchester in 1980 with bands such as The Smiths and Stone Roses passing through its doors and has now grown into an international college, delivering a range of courses from weekend tasters to Honors Degrees in Music Production, Sound Engineering, 3D Film and Animation. Together with DM’s they have set up the #STANDFORSOMETHING Scholarship which will see four successful applicants receive a £9.9k investment in course fees and a guaranteed space on either the London or Manchester campuses. he rise and rise of Alt-J over the past three years has been mightily impressive. Like David vs Goliath, emerging from the underground with intriguing vocals and eclectic beats, their chances of becoming one of the biggest bands in the country may have seemed slight, but they soon took everyone by surprise. With their Mercury Prize-winning debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’, they broke through into public consciousness – not many bands get to see their music go on to become a BBC2 jingle, after all. With their second full-length things got even more interesting. From blog darlings to fully-fledged arena headliners, Alt-J are now officially – get your inverted-commas out - a Very Big Band, and with a sold out show at the O2 Arena now firmly ticked off their list, they’re turning their sights on festival season. “For each of us personally and as a band it felt like a real milestone for us,” explains the band’s Gus UngerHamilton, after recently completing their headline appearance at the massive London venue. “My granny was there and she’d never been to one of our gigs before, my mum came over from France, I had a load of my family there. It just felt like we had been leading up to it this whole time and, even though that’s not the case, it somehow felt we had got there.” It wasn’t just a band milestone: it was a point to prove. “We played Ally Pally in the autumn,” he goes on, “and a

20 big festival questions for 2015 lot of journalists were a bit snide about it, saying, ‘Oh this band isn’t exciting enough to be playing this big arena.’ And I think we were a bit like, ‘Well, fuck you, we’re gonna go play somewhere that’s almost twice as big.’ That was 10,000 and I think there was 18,000 people at the O2, and we got really good reviews for that gig. We felt like we had proved some people wrong, who were like, ‘Well, how can a bunch of shoe-gazey nerds possibly play the O2?’ We were like, ‘Well, this is how we do it and if you don’t like it, whatever. These people seem to like it.’”

Those “shoe-gazey nerds” aren’t just content with packing out one of the country’s biggest venues; they’re now taking their weird and wonderful offerings around the globe, appearing at festivals in just about every territory you can imagine. Luckily, they’re feeling

Making stops all across Europe, the band will appear at everything from Netherlands’ Best Kept Secret and Poland’s Open’er, to Spain’s Bilbao BBK Live. There’s one international weekender in particular that Gus is looking forward to.

“It’s pretty amazing to see our name - I saw the poster today - at the top like that. It’s amazing. Next to Portishead!” says Gus. “It is a different occasion, but I think the O2 was very good for us in that respect. It was a big challenge for us to do a gig like that, and it’s a big challenge to headline a festival. I think we nailed it so hopefully we’ll nail the festivals as well.”

“I’m looking forward to Melt! a lot,” he offers, of the German event. “We played Melt! once before and it’s a really awesome festival.” Taking place in ‘the city of iron’ Ferropolis, it provides quite the backdrop. “It’s really unique; there’s these huge bits of mining machinery everywhere that are lit up and it’s a wicked festival. I’m really looking forward to playing that a lot.” Festival season won’t quite mark the end of Alt-J’s ‘This Is All Yours’ epic run though: the band are hoping to continue on into 2016, and they couldn’t be looking forward to it more. “The end is not quite in sight but it’s exciting,” Gus laughs. “We’ve just been to India, we’re going to South America next and we’re playing a lot of places we didn’t get to on the first album. It’s really cool.” DIY

Which future headliners can stake their claim in 2015? Chvrches

Chvrches’ impressive lighting rig has been expanding like a liquified neon fairground over the last two years, and in that respect alone they’re halfway to headlining a festival already. Their gradual move towards the twilight hours is further backed up by recent one-off releases like ‘Dead Air’ - from The Hunger Games soundtrack - and ‘Get Away’; both of which see the band exploring darker sonic avenues. Growing more solid and formidable every time they take to the stage, Chvrches have announced a short string of summer festival dates so far. Next time round, expect them to have shot up the bill.

Royal Blood

We said it last year when we were swept up in the moment watching Royal Blood at Reading, and we’ll say it again now - Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher are potential future headliners. They were thrown in the deep end supporting Arctic Monkeys at their Finsbury Park shows, and then cut their teeth last summer playing to packed out tents. Graduating to the higher reaches of Reading & Leeds Festival’s main stage this year, if they can follow up their wildly successful debut album with a bang, it’s only a matter of time before Royal Blood hit the headline slots.

Bring Me The Horizon

It’s not that long ago that the idea of Bring Me The Horizon becoming a headline contender was, well, pretty unlikely. Yet here the Sheffield five-piece are: four albums to their name and growing ever stronger. It was just back in December that they filled Wembley Arena to the rafters. This year, with wall to wall radio play firmly tucked into their belts, they’ve creeped further up the posters yet again. The top is now clearly in sight. Just watch those circle pits open.

It’s no secret. Scour the streets of Liverpool, Leeds, Brighton - or anywhere hosting an inner-city weekender / all-dayer - and future chart-toppers will be playing round the corner from the next cult breakthrough. It’s at fests like Sound City, Live At Leeds and The Great Escape where US bands make their first trips from the States, and hyped-up newcomers play debut shows to huddled industry and excitable punters alike. What’s the deal? This Essex kid with an eye for brutally recorded hooks released a mixtape in 2014 that’s since seen him firmly compared to Jamie T. There’s an urban blast of energy to his first work, one that’s already earned him slots on the Circa Waves tour and a massive-dealappearance at Reading & Leeds. What’s the deal? You’ll be hard pressed finding a more exciting Stateside export in 2015. Alicia Bognanno’s Bully possess the brutish force of a playground tyke, and the sweet aftertaste of a dodgy school dinner. A debut album’s due out this year on Columbia imprint Startime International - that’s one hell of a big deal for cutting, no-bullshit punk. Similar to: Cloud Nothings in an echo chamber of amazing. What’s the deal? Valerie Teicher does slick pop better than the entire blog crowd put together. Her ‘Bassically’ single from 2014 was a big moment, and it’s since led to Jungle support slots and collaborations with Dave Bayley from Glass Animals. This NYC newcomer has plenty more to offer, too. Similar to: 80s pop given a 2k15 sheen. q4 Who’s going to play the breakthrough slot at Reading & Leeds this year? Most bands take a career to build up the arsenal of belters that Wolf Alice already have at their disposal; meanwhile, their debut album’s not even out yet. With songs like ‘Giant Peach’ and ‘Bros’ tucked firmly up sleeves, and plenty more to come, it’s no mighty stretch of the imagination to picture Wolf Alice closing main stages within the next few years. In fact, with their quite frankly rabid fanbase already hooked, you can probably count on it.

Faster than you can say “hello?” the already-announced Lionel Richie springs into place to say “is it me you’re looking for?” Post-Dolly order is restored, right? Wrong. Lately Lionel’s been making all sorts of rich remarks about how outdoor festivals are rubbish, so it’s hard to imagine him embracing the atmosphere with the same gusto that Dolly Parton mustered last year when she performed ‘Mud Song’. Hopefully Lionel will stop his silly nonsense about wanting roofs at festivals soon, but in the meantime, here are some more legends we’d like to see taking on the Sunday teatime slot. Cher Cher belting out her inspirational anthem ‘Believe’ to a field of hazy-headed revellers, with a wardrobe of outlandish costume changes side-of-stage? It doesn’t get more iconic. Tina Turner The Sunday tea time slot is practically built for a legend like Tina - plus, she’s simply the best. Wham! Last year George Michael cruelly teased us all with careless whispers about a Wham! reunion at Glastonbury - who says he wasn’t referring to this summer instead? Bananarama This year’s Glastonbury boasts the biggest rapper in the world as a headliner, so how about the biggest girl band in the world to match? Stevie Wonder Having proved himself as a bona fide festival headliner at Bestival 2012, it should only be a matter of time before the teatime slot is signed, sealed and delivered by Stevie.

“I

went to Leeds Festival in 2009 and I left because I hated it,” says Becca Macintyre of her first festival experience. “I just didn’t get why people were getting so fucked up that they couldn’t enjoy the music. It was just weird.” It only took three years for Becca to return, this time alongside the rest of Marmozets as they played the festival’s BBC Introducing Stage. “For me, it’s not until you start playing festivals that you really find a love for them. You’re there for the fans and it’s like Christmas Day when all

the family gets together, all the bands you’ve met reunite and it’s lovely.” This year, the star atop Marmozets’ festival tree is a pair of main stage slots at Reading & Leeds Festival, alongside the likes of Bring Me The Horizon and Royal Blood. It’s a chance for the new guard of rock to stake their claims for the crown. “Leeds and Reading are an amazing opportunity for us to show people what we’re about. We’re going to bring out a cheeky couple of bits that will surprise people. We want it to be really special, it’s going to be our biggest achievement yet.”

Formed in 2011 by two tribes of siblings - Becca, Sam and Josh Macintyre are joined by Will and Jack Bottomley - Marmozets have toured relentlessly since their inception and last September, all those hours spent on stage came to a glorious crescendo with the release of their debut album ‘The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets’. Following on from a pair of furious EPs, 2011’s ‘Passive Aggressive’ and 2012’s ‘Vexed’, their debut dances between technical brilliance and emotional resonance. Sitting backstage at London’s Electric Ballroom ahead of a sold out headline show, Becca, Jack and Sam are in high spirits. “There’s been kids waiting outside since half-eleven,” says Sam with excited disbelief. “I got my picture taken with someone in Rymans,” says Jack with equal enthusiasm and confusion. “I was buying a label maker, you should see my pedal board,” he boasts. “We just wrote the best songs we could at the time,” explains Sam. “Since it’s been out there’s been a big step up on the fans’ behalf. There’s been a lot more people turning up to shows.” “The record goes from one extreme to the other but it blends together nicely,” says Jack. “It helps it not get boring, I’d like it to be an album that has longevity.”

“We didn’t really stick to a theme with it,” admits Jack. “When we have an idea, we just go with it rather than thinking, ‘Oh, this doesn’t sound like us’. We can always make it sound like us, especially with Becca and Sam’s voices on it. Because we have that element, it’ll always sound like us.“ Marmozets already have Glastonbury, Download and Warped Tour under their collective belts (“We can wiggle ourselves into anywhere really”) but this summer will be the first time they hit the festival circuit with an album to their name. “We’re doing all sorts, we’re going to America, Japan, Australia and doing as much as we can cram in to a year,” promises Jack. “We’re just going out and hoping there’ll be a lot more people who know the songs. I think it’ll be pretty awesome to see the difference from last year. When we played Leeds and Reading last year, the album wasn’t out yet but it was still amazing. It was unbelievable. If we get the same amount of people, with more of them knowing our songs, it’ll be awesome,” he dreams. Marmozets aren’t interested in stopping to admire the view from their ascent though. “Towards the end of the year we’ll be back in the studio, as long as we can find time to write the rest of the songs.”

We still have a blast playing it live but we’ve been writing new songs and we’re ready to move on to a new chapter,” says Sam with obvious excitement. “There’s a couple of festivals we are repeating and we’ve got much bigger slots that last year, so that’s a good thing. Knowing the new album will take us up another scale, it’s only going to continue.” A summer of setlists from ‘The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets’ isn’t a daunting prospect though. “Because the reaction’s been so good for those songs it makes you love them again. We’re just trying to ignore the fact we’re writing new stuff and enjoy what we’re doing, which we are,” explains Jack. “We have a clearer direction of where we want to go. Obviously it’ll still sound like us but it will be better. We’re already looking forward to the next thing,” starts Sam. “We’re just keeping the ball rolling. I don’t understand how you can have a difficult second album if you’re consistently writing. If you’re a writer, you write music. It’s what you do, you don’t take breaks from writing and you don’t decide to book a month to write an album. Writing music is a lifestyle, it’s not a chore.” “The boys know what sounds they want. Throughout the year they’ve experimented with a lot of gear but we’re always up for playing around. I think this album is still going to have the catchy ‘Captivate You’ type songs but I think it’s going to be a lot more fun,” says Becca before Sam interjects at her choice of words. “I wouldn’t say fun.” “I meant fun for us to play. That’s how I feel anyway. It’s more fun but it’s a lot more mature. I feel good playing it, that’s what I mean by fun,” Becca says. “I thought you meant musically,” admits Sam. “No, I don’t mean that happy, clappy kind of shit,” laughs

Becca. “The theme of this album is fun,” mocks Sam. “Here’s a major scale,” he adds before being told to shut up by a smiling Becca. They are family, after all. After a spotlight was thrown on to the Reading & Leeds’ 2015 line-up and its poor reflection of women in rock, eyes are have been turning to Marmozets. “Maybe the guy who books the festival is an idiot, I don’t know,” says Becca, sharing her view on the situation. “There’s loads of amazing female rock artists. I think we’re just lucky this year. I know we’re loved by people and that’s why we’ve been given the opportunities we have, not because we’re on a label or because we’ve got people behind us, giving it to us on a plate,” she states, responding to false online claims. “That’s something that’s really pissed me off because people don’t have a fucking clue how this works. I think we deserve these opportunities. We’re a live band and I thoroughly enjoy myself when I’m on stage with my boys because it’s a connection that no one can ever take away from me. We’re hard workers, there’s no stopping us because you can’t stop in this business. You have to keep going to be able to achieve the best that you can possibly achieve. We’ve been doing it for ten years now and we’re not going to stop,” she promises with complete conviction. “We have an absolute blast on stage with each other. It’s an amazing opportunity for us to play these festivals and for people to come and have a mosh with us. Festival season is when you can really have fun,” explains Becca. “It’s like a big birthday bash.” DIY

hen Reading & Leeds announced the bulk of their line-up back in February, one thing became immediately clear: just how few women featured among the artists confirmed to play. Marmozets’ Becca Macintyre is currently the only female stepping on to the Main Stage at the event this year. Over on the second stage, at the time of press it’s Wolf Alice’s Ellie Rowsell flying the flag solo, likewise Azealia Banks on the BBC Radio 1 Xtra stage. It was enough to make Warped Tour’s much-criticised twenty percent in 2014 look favourable. The world has a gender problem, music has a gender problem, so yes, festivals do have a gender problem. Disclosure and Rudimental aren’t exactly going to struggle with getting word out, but any other mega-stars planning this kind of event should probably take note. Giving big names a curation role isn’t some kind of new fad. In fact, it’s more prominent than ever in 2015. On the other side of the Atlantic, Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and The National’s Aaron Dessner are putting together Eaux Claires Music Festival, a Wisconsin celebration of ace, alternative acts. secret sets? In the furthest corners of a forest? Down the back of a portaloo? [Just no - Ed.] Secret sets pop up everywhere, and there’s a general rule - the bigger the festival, the more secrets there are in store. Here’s where you can expect to uncover the clues.

Glastonbury Where? Secret sets are a feature of the Park Stage - it’s boasted both Radiohead and Pulp in recent years. Mind you, Prince’s rumoured 2014 appearance was a no-go. Who could it be? Blur officially aren’t headlining, says Dave Rowntree. But come on. Let’s not rule them out altogether. Alex probably needs to pop round Mr Eavis’ for some farming tips anyway.

Latitude Where? Other Voices - known for putting on tiny church shows in Dingle, Ireland - are taking over the secret show baton at this year’s festival. Chances are special guests will be hiding behind the coloured sheep, visible to no more than twenty people. Who could it be? Noel Gallagher’s unlikely to be playing acoustically on a riverboat, but let’s not rule it out. Failing that, Alt-J in the woods would be ace. Just don’t put any of Wolf Alice on a floating stage. Reading & Leeds Where? The BBC Introducing Stage hosts daily surprises, and last year saw Jamie T making his comeback on the Festival Republic stage. Who could it be? Metallica on the Introducing Stage, anybody? Expect the unexpected. Or Jai Paul. Or Dido (#didowatch2015).

For the most part, festival bookers are constantly trawling the web, reading the press, going to shows and listening out for the hottest new acts on the grapevine. However, some lovely types make it Really Quite Easy for everyone involved, holding events focused on hooking fresh blood up with the festival circus. One such benevolent circus of musical talent is Groningen’s Eurosonic. Held in January, the inner-city event features new artists and bands from around Europe. Running the European Talent Exchange Program (that’s ETEP for short) - an initiative of the Noorderslag Foundation aimed at stimulating the circulation of European acts at festivals, on radio and in the media throughout Europe - it keeps a tally chart of who is booked for where. Since it started in 2003 a total of 2294 shows by 810 European artists have been presented at 90 ETEP festivals in 30 countries.

It can either be a sneaky inclusion halfway down a bill, or some mini-showcase on the other side of the world festivals are fast becoming an opportunity for bands to road test new material on massive crowds. Few audiences come tougher - or more willing to experience a revelation - than Sunday afternoon, triple-hangover’ed festival punters, dizzied and confused about their whereabouts, but still willing to give new music a try.

As some of music’s biggest acts edge towards an album release in late 2015 / early 2016, they’re making first steps at some of this year’s fests. The follow-up to 2013’s ‘Holy Fire’ is fast approaching, and as of the beginning of this year, the Oxford group were planning to record their new LP in a location close to home. There’s an added pressure with album #4 - since the release of ‘Holy Fire’, Foals have quickly established themselves in the future A list headliners bracket. “Yeah, I would like to headline Reading,” Yannis Philippakis told DIY in 2013. “But at the same time I’d like to think that this desire wouldn’t affect the creative process, like inwardly. The big question: Will it be out in time for one of the group’s biggest shows so far at Reading & Leeds? With the exception of some South American shows, their schedule’s been freed up for the whole of Spring 2015. Turn summer, chances are they’ll have a new record to showcase. “The writing process never stopped from the last album,” Dan offered, during their US tour late last year. “There are already some songs which are a couple of years old. Mark [Crew, producer] came out to work with us around UK and Europe. So we can keep writing and recording. He’s coming out again, as soon as this tour’s done. wiftly snatching the role from Mumford & Sons’ past, Kurt Vile is apparently making “banjo music” for his new record. In an interview with SPIN, the Philadelphian provided an update on the follow-up to 2013’s ‘Wakin on a Pretty Daze’. Citing “pretty finger-pickers”, “the electric song” and “piano songs”, he also told the publication to expect “banjo songs”. “Everything you can imagine I’ve done… That’s where I’m at now,” he said. Sessions have been taking place in Brooklyn, Athens, Los Angeles and Joshua Tree’s Rancho de la Luna. But it’s not long until he takes this on the road. Battles

Long gone from their math rock rep, Battles are always in transformation. Their world was turned upside down when, post breakthrough debut ‘Mirrored’, frontman Tyondai Braxton decided to focus on solo work. But follow-up ‘Gloss Drop’ pointed to a band who could still stake their claim as a bizarre, odd-pop force. Following a year-long hiatus, the group went back into the studio in 2014, at the time claiming they were about to “finish” their new album. “Yes, the windows are dusty, but let this serve as evidence of a new record being made,” they said. Savages

With the exception of some low-key New York shows, Savages have been huddled in the studio, working on their follow-up to 2013 debut ‘Silence Yourself’. Earlier this year they showcased ‘Adore’, a spiralling, more expansive track than anything on their first work. q14 How can you enjoy the biggest festivals from the comfort of

your home?

From being able to watch every main stage set at last year’s Glastonbury to the inevitable onslaught of dodgy mobile phone live-streams popping up on Twitter of the person in front’s head that’ll characterise this year’s festivals, it’s never been easier to enjoy the live action from the warm – hopefully dry – comfort of your own sofa. Just how realistic you want to go is up to you.

Watching

Thanks to a certain national broadcaster here in the UK, we’re able to watch at least a handful of the country’s finest festivals via a little red button or click of the mouse. Glastonbury gets the full onslaught, but fans can also see sets from Reading & Leeds and T in the Park on their telly. However, if you want a more realistic festival experience, place a few items of furniture between you and your screen, and sporadically move them, just to ensure you can’t possibly see the lead singer’s face at any point. For Glastonbury, remember to make your own flag from a bed sheet and broom handle to plant right in the middle of that 60 inch plasma. It just wouldn’t be the same.

Drinking

One great benefit of being at home is supermarket drinks prices. You may have paid less than a fiver for your can of lager, but why not go for a brand 26

you wouldn’t usually touch with a bargepole, then keep it well away from the fridge to ensure that familiar warmness. If someone else takes away your plastic pint glass, give them 10p. They’re the rules.

Eating

Being at home may allow you to cook from scratch and make sure at least one of your five-a-day is catered for, but why would you want to do that? Live solely off cereal bars and noodles eaten off recyclable paper plates. Make sure to drop approximately one third of your meal on the floor. Before someone else accidentally sits on it later, obviously.

Sleeping

Beds are great, aren’t they? But if your FOMO levels hit new highs during that televised headline set, why not set your tent up in the living room (bonus points when there’s inevitably not enough space)? Remember to use the pegs and guy ropes. Nobody will mind.

Impress your mates

Your favourite band is on BBC2? Amazing. Make sure to win over your jealous mates by holding your phone up to the telly and giving them a call. Sing along at the top of your voice, completely ignoring the fact they’ve cut to Lauren Laverne introducing some world music performed in the BBC yurt. In no way will they think you’ve completely lost it, you legend.

Calls of nature

If you want the true festival experience, you’re going to have to do something about that clean, functioning toilet. Throw soaked loo roll around the bathroom, break both the lock and seat, and employ a gang of local ner-do-wells to form an inexplicably long queue outside the door. Job done - misery assured - everyone else in the house thoroughly pissed off. Not up for that? Dig a hole in the garden and blame it on the dog.

ake a quick flick through these very pages and you’ll soon enough note that yes, there is a lot of overlap between lineups. That’s precisely why some of your favourite festivals aim to tie artists in to the fabled ‘festival exclusive’. At one end of these this year are Alexisonfire, whose return to Reading & Leeds is not only a UK festival exclusive, but a European live exclusive – they’re not playing anywhere else on the continent. At all. At the other is the thinly-veiled ‘but they’re probably playing T in the Park’ ‘England & Wales exclusive’ that this year accompanied Mumford & Sons’ and Bastille’s Reading & Leeds announcements. So who’s yelling about boasting rights in 2015? Royal Blood’s only UK festival set will be at Reading & Leeds, while The Strokes’ sole grass-clad visit will be at British Summer Time in Hyde Park this June. Wild Beasts are exclusively at Latitude, Sufjan Stevens at End of the Road and 2manyDJs and James Murphy’s Despacio’s sole festival outing will be at new London event, Citadel. And while our knowledge of Spanish touring plans isn’t the best, we do know Florence + The Machine’s only date there this year will be at Benicassim.

celebrating a birthday this year? It’s a case of who isn’t celebrating a milestone this year, as 2006 transpires to be (by our – very – rough estimations) the most prolific year of festival-planning history. Latitude, The Great Escape, Kendal Calling, End of the Road and Bilbao BBK Live are all celebrating their tenth anniversary, with Primavera Sound and Standon Calling making it to fifteen, while it’s 25 for La Route du Rock, 45 for Roskilde – and while not strictly an anniversary, it’s ten years since the multi-city Dot to Dot made its debut in 2005.

The band have a rich history of stunning slots at the top of the bill backed by everything from walls of televisions and satellites dishes to giant antennas, ‘Hullaballoons’ and pyrotechnics galore. This tour should see them once again pushing boundaries, especially after being away for a few years. Their recent comeback tour saw the band delve through the darker corners of their back catalogue, and based on the incredible reaction to the likes of ‘Muscle Museum’, ‘Assassin’ and ‘Dead Star’, that trend should continue throughout the ‘Drones’ tour, giving an element of unpredictability to their polished stadium rock. It’s easy enough to take swipes at The Libertines. In the past few years, Pete Doherty’s spent most of his time in and out of rehab, selling Kate Moss’ old cigarette butts in Camden in between stays. Carl Barat, meanwhile, is a regular weekend fixture DJing at student nights. The cheap shots, though, overlook one glaring great fact. The Libertines - for all their unpredictable chaos know exactly what they’re doing. Just as everybody was lining up their predictions for a sloppy, halfarsed reformation when the band headlined Reading & Leeds in 2010, Carl and Pete played one of the best shows of their entire careers, uniting a sea of howling thousands with ‘Don’t Look Back Into the Sun’ and the eerily accurate ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’. What will become of the likely lads this year? If their past stint on the Main Stage is anything to go by, they’ve got it in them to pull it out the bag and triumph all over again. (El Hunt)

The Libertines are a bit like marmite; those that love them really do, but if you’re not a fan, well, you’re not going to be converted anytime soon. They’re not without merit, obviously, but their upcoming slots at the top of a handful of festival bills is baffling. The band have never had the most solid footing, and after their massive - at one point - ‘one-off’ reunion at 2010’s Reading & Leeds eventually fell flat, it’s hard to see how this year will hold up. Their most recent huge appearance, headlining last year’s BST event in London’s Hyde Park, descended into madness. There’s also apparently a new album on the way, but there’s no firm date for release, even with these shows on the horizon. Will this muchloved, iconic band of the early 00s dare headline some of the biggest European festivals while road-testing new material? Who knows. Right now a world of expectation sits on their shoulders, and it’s only up to them to prove the doubters wrong. (Sarah Jamieson)

Teasing the release with ‘Crystals’, the opening track of the album, Of Monsters and Men are easing fans in slowly. “It’s a good bridge between this album and our last,” starts Nanna. “It’ll make sense to anyone who has heard ‘My Head Is An Animal’ but there’s something at the end that people haven’t heard yet.” The album itself, written mostly at home, is “a little different,” but that’s

unsurprising considering how far the band have travelled. “The whole process of making this album was completely different to the other one,” Nanna admits. “You can definitely hear that it’s still us but a few years have passed and there’s been a lot of maturing. It was a very natural thing for us and you can feel that.” Creating ‘Beneath The Skin’ wasn’t as free flowing as their creativity though. Entering their rehearsal space in February of last year the band started working on their ideas. “The writing went well and we were having luck with that,” recalls Nanna. “But then our rehearsal space flooded with all our equipment in. ments where we questioned what was happening, but now it’s done it’s great.” The title ‘Beneath The Skin’ “describes the album well. Going beneath the skin, if you can, is going beneath everything,” explains Nanna. “We talked about it a lot. Our first album was searching outwards and was very enthusiastic about everything. We were making up stories and trying to see the world from our home in Iceland. Everything outside of there was so exciting but once we’d spent all that time out there in the world, we felt like we were really missing home. This album is also a lot more insular. It’s a lot more about figuring yourself out; it’s the polar opposite in a way. ‘Beneath The Skin’ is about growing up.” “It’s definitely a more personal album,” continues Nanna. “I never felt any pressure when we went into the album but maybe that’s just what I thought. We were just doing our thing but when you look back, now we’ve done the album and we’re laughing, you can see all the stress and the craziness behind it. We were probably really stressed out but we just didn’t realise it. It was probably good that I was pushing those feelings away and didn’t let it affect me.” ‘Beneath The Skin’ is out on 8th June and the band has a very simple desire for it. “I want people to experience it in their own way,” exclaims Nanna. “We put a lot of work and love into it, we’re very proud of our little baby.” DIY

Pulled Apart By Horses try something new It’s been a turbulent few months for Pulled Apart By Horses. A triumphant UK tour and a Christmas split with DZ Deathrays saw 2014 end on a high, but as February drew to a close, news emerged that drummer / founding member Lee Vincent was leaving the group for pastures new. However, with a string of festival shows, a Leeds homecoming and a live album out for RSD, frontman Tom Hudson explains why the band aren’t stopping. Words: Ali Shutler

“Obviously it’s weird, because we’re so

used to seeing Lee’s tattooed face staring back at us,” frontman Tom Hudson says of Pulled Apart By Horses’ first show with their new drummer, Tommy Davidson. “But we’ve been pals with Tommy for years. It wasn’t a massive gig; it was in a Tiki bar in Liverpool. It felt like the house parties we used to play a few years ago, it was a good one to break him in with really.” The chemistry within the band is already there, built on years of friendship. “He was

James’ best man at his wedding, so the transition was quite seamless,” but this isn’t the first time Tommy has sat behind the stool for Pulled Apart By Horses. “He’s played drums with us once before. We supported Foals in Kingston and it was the same day that Lee and his wife were expecting their daughter so Lee was on red alert. He couldn’t play the gig so Tommy learnt our whole set without ever having a practice with us. He was in the van the whole way down with his headphones on, playing on his knees. His legs were red raw by the time we got there.” “It was a weird couple of months,” explains Tom, reflecting on 2015 so far. “Just trying to figure things out. We’ve got loads of other stuff going on with management, so it’s a transitional period. The thing is with Lee, everyone expects we’ve had an argument or a breakup but it’s all completely amicable. We just spoke to him at the beginning of the year and he just wants to move on to new things. We didn’t want to stop doing the band at all. We wanted to keep on going.” ‘One Night In Heaven’, a live album recorded at London’s Heaven on the final night of their UK tour last November, has just been released for Record Store Day and it captures the final gig Lee played with Pulled Apart By Horses, drawing a line under one era while pushing them on to the next.

“The last tour we did, we recorded loads of our sets and the London show was a total banger. We said ‘Let’s get it out, let’s do a vinyl’ and Paul Riddlesworth, who runs Too Pure Singles Club and released our second ever single, managed to turn it around really quickly,” explains Tom. “Record Store Day is important because there’s nothing better than holding a vinyl in front of you and seeing the artwork as it was intended. Flicking through the pages and getting into it is a lot more human than a bunch of mp3s. It’s really important to celebrate all the indie stores. Whenever we’re on tour, we always end up spending all our money in various record stores all over the UK.” The 13-song tracklisting for ‘One Night In Heaven’ reads like a Pulled Apart By Horses ‘Greatest Hits’, and it highlights just how far the band have come from their scrappy beginnings. “It’s really cool to have [the newer material] because

before we’d go 100 miles an hour and then be absolutely fucked after half an hour. The bigger you get, the longer you have to play for so it’s nice to have some songs that are heavy, but are slower to break things up a bit more. And it gives the crowd a bit of breather as well as us,” he laughs. And as for the next chapter, Pulled Apart By Horses are already scribbling down ideas. “We’ve got festivals lined up, a homecoming in Leeds [doubling as the launch event for local festival Live At Leeds] and we’re just starting to dip our toes into writing new stuff with Tommy. Just trying to get a vibe and establish where we want to go next. We’ve got one or two songs that we’ve been messing around with; we want to mix it up a bit more. The last album was a lot more progressive and we want to experiment with new sounds but also go back to the early days of having more riffs and just having more fun.” DIY

There are a lot of festivals. Loads. Hundreds even. Over the last couple of years,

have played most of them. This summer, with their debut album in tow, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re out to prove thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nobody better at pulling a crowd. Words: Sarah Jamieson. Photos: Mike Massaro

magine the scene: crowds are waltzing past stages, warm pints are being waved in the air, and music is pouring from tents here, there and everywhere. In the middle of a festival, there are so many options when it comes down to who to see. Sometimes it’s all down to who catches your attention at just the right moment. Last year, one band in particular managed to draw in the crowds by, quite simply, being utterly mental.

“I guess if you just walk the past the stage and see two people doing something a bit different, you’re drawn in,” says Isaac Holman, one half of blistering duo Slaves. “Doing something different” is something of an understatement when it comes to this Kent-based two-piece. Over the last three years, they’ve been running up serious miles on the road: their sets a chaotic mix of screamed vocals, thundering riffs and a drummer marching on the spot, bellowing statements at an awestruck audience. Never short on the theatrics, they’re a duo who know the appeal of the unknown and thrive on the challenge of catching punters unaware. “I think even before we had any real fans, we would still get quite a good crowd at the festivals who were drawn in out of just wondering what it was.” It was during last year’s festival season that the twopiece really made a lasting impression, but no one could say it wasn’t well-earned. Having taken their time on the touring circuit during their years prior, the band have proven that they’re not ones to rest on their laurels: the lead-up to last year’s summer was about working hard. It was a phrase that guitarist Laurie Vincent heard once in a documentary about The Cribs that stuck with him most. “I finally met them last week,” he offers, “and I told them about that. I think I was a bit drunk and probably annoyed them, but I told them how much that bit meant to me - ‘Do your two years’ - and we’re so happy that we did. No one can say that we blew up overnight. If they did, they’d be missing the background.”

COME PREPARED

For most new bands, festivals tend to be a baptism of fire but now that Slaves have learned the ropes, they’re planning to bring the big guns to their appearances this summer. “We’ve got a lot more insight into what production means,” Laurie assures, “having done these bigger tours. We’re gonna go out and do the same thing, but there’s gonna be a lot more thought and care put into the whole package. The lights won’t be an accident! That’s what we’ve realised over the past six months; how a show is so much more than just two people, or four people standing on a stage. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes and we’re just developing that. We want cameos from our mantaray, stuff like that...”

“Those two years,” continues Holman, as the pair sit chatting in DIY HQ, “that was where we started. It was hard work but we had really good times.”

opened them up to a whole new audience, but it was on a recent tour of the UK that they felt as though they were finally playing to their own crowd.

This time would go on to be instrumental for the band. “You’d never trade it,” agrees Vincent, “and you definitely miss it sometimes, that slog. It’s blind faith; believing in your music that much with no real payback is kinda bizarre. The fact that we did so much... I’d never trade it. I miss that ‘Is it gonna happen?’ feeling.”

“I think we had always been floating the saying of, ‘We love small venues’,” explains Vincent, thinking back to the band’s biggest support slot yet, “but after playing Ally Pally, I love big venues! There’s nothing better. Standing on stage and looking at ten thousand people is the weirdest feeling.” But, again, it was just another piece to the puzzle. Their next stint would be even more satisfying.

Now, things are looking a little different. After recording their new album throughout last summer – alongside playing a different festival every weekend – the duo jumped headfirst into even more touring. A run opening up for Jamie T late last year

The band have played their fair share of festivals over the past few years, but which weekender stands out most? “I always say it, but [last year’s] Latitude was unbelievable. It was a scorching day and I think we’d done quite a long run. We had done four or five dates running up to it and we were really frustrated, thinking, ‘Oh no one’s even gonna watch us, this is a family festival’ and then we went on and it was probably the best thing we’d played. There were 2,000 people just crowded in. Watching people walk past and think, ‘What the fuck is that?’ then stop to watch you is the best feeling. Isaac parting the crowd, walking all the way to the back and then hugging a photographer by accident. He got a selfie with him! It was the first time he ever got a wireless mic. And the last time…”

The Wytches. “Last year, I don’t think we played to many: with the Jamie T run, it was all sold out before we were announced on it. We just turned up and played, and people didn’t really know we were supporting, so that was the first time we went out to people who might have bought tickets for us. The reaction we got was incredible. At Kentish Town Forum, when we played ‘The Hunter’ the whole room went mental. Obviously when we played it at Jamie T, they were his fans so we were just sort of battling the hecklers the whole time. It was good, but going out to your own crowd is incredible.” It’s not just their live set that’s earning that sort of reaction: Slaves are fast becoming a mainstay on BBC Radio 1, for good measure. “Getting on the BBC Introducing playlist...” Vincent laughs, “we thought that was the peak!” “I don’t think you ever get used to turning on the radio and hearing your song playing,” Holman adds, looking at his partnerin-crime. “It is really weird.” “It’s probably one of the biggest signs of commercial UK success, getting played on Radio 1,” picks up Vincent. “We’re not that sort of band, either, but I think the fact that we get played is good for everyone. We get tweets like, ‘Can’t believe this band are being played on Radio 1’, but in a positive way. That’s a really nice feeling.”

Are you going to be satisfied?

With support coming in from all corners, the band are now focusing on their next step. There’s their first official headline tour, five dates of which are already sold out (“Maybe the ticket link was broken…”) ahead of the release of their snarling new record ‘Are You Satisfied?’.

Slaves are in the final stages of prepping their new album ‘Are You Satisifed?’ Laurie Vincent fills us in.

“Definitely a roller coaster,” replies Vincent, when asked how it feels to be in Slaves right now. “It feels as close to what I thought it’d feel like to be successful in a band, that you expect when you’re growing up. A dream come true is probably the best phrase to put it.” “It is completely crazy,” adds Holman. “It’s very surreal.” Even with so many things to look forward to – with another round of festivals to boot - there’s no fooling this pair: they know the pressure’s still on, but they’re not going to let that get in the way of anything. “Now, there’s more pressure than ever because we’re not just the underdogs anymore,” says Vincent. “We can’t really hold on to that title anymore because we’re playing the bigger stages this year, and our album will be out. I think we always relish the challenge of stealing a show that we weren’t meant to be on but, this year we’ve earned our place and it’s time to prove what we’re made of.”

“We really wanted to make an album: we didn’t wanna make thirteen singles. We were focused on a journey and I think we achieved that. We just wanted to experiment with our sound. The first EP that we did was all pretty similar, guitar-driven songs but we used different instruments for this album. There’s a piano on it, a drum machine, bass guitar, not all necessarily layered over each other: most songs are still a two-piece layout but we changed our line-up a lot. We just tried to really experiment with our sound and develop.”

“I always feel like festivals are the glory run,” he concludes. “You slog it over winter, freezing, playing in venues and trying to get out of there, then at festivals, you get to hang out with all your mates, get drunk, play good shows, watch all of the bands that you wanna see. Mumford & Sons’ Festival ‘How To’ Years spent on the festival circuit, Mumford & Sons have all the knowhow required when it comes to topping bills or running the show behind-the-scenes. They’ve fought through liferisking operations, a healthy supply of heckling and every booking headache imaginable, and they’re here to tell the tale. As they ready themselves for a Reading & Leeds headline slot, we asked the group to provide a guide on how to conquer festivals big and small.

AVOID CANCELLING A HEADLINE APPEARANCE

As their Glastonbury Pyramid Stage headline slot beckoned in 2013, Mumfords were faced with a serious ‘what if?’ when bassist Ted Dwane had to undergo an emergency operation. Dates were cancelled - including at Bonnaroo - but they still (just about) made it. “The chaos of it was kind of amazing,” says Ted. “I grew up near there. Me and my mate used to drink cider under the 48 diymag.com

main stage, when we were like sixteen. It was always going to be immensely poignant. By not dying, the poignancy was magnified. It was like a double dose of awesome, really.” “It’s hard to know if Glastonbury was our best ever performance,” says Ben Lovett. “Probably not. But it was incredible, the experience of just being up on that stage and looking at the audience. The occasion of it is completely unparalleled across the whole world. There’s something about how festivals are done and I don’t think anyone in the world quite does it the same.”

Their Glasto near-miss came at the end of a gigantic, five-year world tour, which spanned two albums. “Physically we’re up for it. We’re pretty fit. We’re refreshed, definitely,” says Ben, when asked if they’re ready to take on a similar schedule in 2015. “We fucking love playing live,” adds Marcus Mumford. “We loved it so much that we almost burnt ourselves out. Then we stopped, and we were probably wise to stop when we did. We went away, made the album that we’re all really keen on - we’ve come back and we’re going to play live again. It’s going to be even better.”

MAKE IT UP TO THOSE WHO MISS OUT

Because of Ted’s operation, an appearance at Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Festival had to be cancelled in 2013. But as a means of making up for it, they’re confirmed to appear at this June’s event. Their last appearance at Reading & Leeds was one of the most oversubscribed, too. Packed out tents are always a staple, but their 2010 set took the biscuit. Plenty had to either watch from afar, or try and pick out a banjo while standing next to a burger stand. This time, they’re topping the main stage - you won’t be able to miss it. “It felt like a good idea. They asked us, and we said yes,” says Marcus. “We like that festival a lot. It’s rowdy as fuck. We love being rowdy. I don’t know if it’s going to be a difficult crowd.”

RUN A FESTIVAL OF YOUR OWN

For years, Mumford & Sons have been putting on their own Gentlemen of the Road shows, spanning across both sides of the Atlantic. Remote areas which enjoy perfect calm for 99% of the year are suddenly invaded by a bunch of bands - some with banjos, some without. It’s a tradition that’s continuing in 2015, with stopovers scheduled for the Scottish highlands and New Jersey’s Seaside Heights. “I think they’re the best line-ups we’ve done so far,” claims Ben. This year’s bill includes The Maccabees, Honeyblood and Jack Garratt, plus heavyweights the Foo Fighters and My Morning Jacket. “Foo Fighters are quite good. They’re really coming along. We’ve supported them from the beginning,” jokes Marcus. “We poured a lot of effort into this. Ben’s amazing at hearing new bands. Ted and Win are pretty good too. I’m rubbish at it. I’ll just pick it up a few years down the line and be like, ‘Ah, have you heard of Beyoncé? She’s brilliant.’ So we had long meetings on the phone - conference calls, spreadsheets with everyone we could ask, everyone we had asked. And I just put the phone on mute for two hours and had a bath. I didn’t really have much to contribute! ‘Oh I’ve heard of Jack White!’“

Hi Stina, what’re you up to? We’ve just flown back from SXSW and before that we were on a US tour with 2:54. Next we are supporting Belle and Sebastian over here. You’re playing a bunch of festivals this year including Sound City, Truck and Y Not Festival - are there any you’re particularly looking forward to? I’m excited to do them all! We did none last year so it’s going to be a festivalfilled summer. Are there any bands you’re definitely going to see? I wanna see Eagulls and Lucy Rose. Do you prefer multi-venue city festivals, or ones in a field? I think with the multi-venue festival it really depends on the city. I do love a burger van and mud though. Were you an avid festival goer before you were in a band? Of course. Can you remember your first festival? Who did you see? I went to T in The Park when I was 16. I saw Pretty Girls Make Graves, Regina Spektor and The Strokes. Are you going to any festivals this year that you’re not playing? Probably not. We’re playing all the ones I want to go to. What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you at a festival? Unfortunately at the first festival I went to my friend got spiked. It was a very scary experience. It’s really important to be aware of what’s going on around you at festivals as it can be quite dangerous. Any notable highlights? Leeds last year was pretty amazing. It’s 50 diymag.com

been one of my favourite gigs to play. It’s been nearly a year since you released your debut album, are you planning to try out any new material at festivals this year? Probably some songs but we will have to wait and see. Which of your songs goes down best during your festival sets? Does it differ from your usual gigs? I guess it always best to play the faster songs rather than slow jams. People wanna jump up and down at festivals. Are there any festivals or events you’ve not yet played that you’d love to? I’d love to do some abroad, we’re sticking to UK ones this year. Last year we did Best Kept Secret which was great fun, so maybe some more in Europe. If you could travel back in time, what piece of advice would you give yourself before you played your first festival? I think I was quite nervous at T In The Park, mostly because I didn’t expect so many people to come and see us. I’d probably say to myself to chill and enjoy it.

ou’re playing a handful of festivals this year, including BST Hyde Park and NOS Alive - are there any you’re particularly looking forward to? I am, Longitude and British Summer Time festival should be good. We’re also off to Corsica and Lisbon, the best thing about festival season are the European festivals. They are always hot and picturesque. Are there any bands you’re definitely going to see? I haven’t done my research yet. I think we’re sharing a bill with Morrissey, that could be interesting. We always like to check out other people playing the same day as us. If you’re lucky you can see something that’s new and good. What’s your favourite thing about playing international festivals? The weather normally, but that depends on the country and time of year. Do you find the culture of festivals changes from country to country, or are they much the same? It strikes me that most festivals use something like Glastonbury as a template. So, you’ll find all festivals attempt to be ‘Eco’ to some extent. You’ll find some quirky area with circus stuff going on. You’ll see some dudes with dreadlocks and you’ll always find some huge corporate sponsorship area. The crowds are always different though, they can vary wildly from place to place. Is there anything you tend to come across at international events that you wish the UK would adopt? I don’t think so, there are some festivals like Werchter which are truly wonderful for bands to play. But, that’s all selfish hospitality stuff to be honest. My impression is that all festivals can be trying for even the most munted festival goer. Have you played any particularly interesting or striking festivals abroad? We did a show at the Villa Medici in Rome which was very beautiful. They also host a summer of concerts at an ancient amphitheatre in Nîmes, France. The Pont du Gard festival (not far from Nîmes) is also spectacular. All these festivals involve ancient Roman architecture, that would be what makes a festival striking. Are there any non-UK festivals you’d love to play that you haven’t yet? We’ve pretty much done them all by now. I’m trying to think of some that I’d like to do, but we seriously seem to have done all of them.

Do you have any notable highlights? Primavera last year was amazing. We played at 3am, we were very tired and unsure as to who would turn up. Apparently we ended up playing to about 10,000 people, they had to close the amphitheater that we performed in. That was special. ast year was my first year at the festivals. Personally I’m not a massive fan of crowds so I never thought they would be my kind of thing but if you know what you’re doing they can be fun! Here are a few tips on things that will probably ruin your festival if not taken into account. When we were at Glastonbury we had an amazing first night listening to Metallica and stomping around soggy fields for hours trying to find friends. However in the morning I woke up to find I had spent every last penny I had. A friend who shall remain nameless had lost his wallet the night before and so I’d lent him half what I had. I couldn’t even buy a bottle of water so ended up just having to leave to avoid death by dehydration. There are a few lessons to be learnt from that experience. Firstly at a festival you will definitely need water, secondly you might want to take out a load before heading to Glastonbury, and lastly

once you get there it’s every fucker for themselves. Being nice won’t get you anywhere. We were lucky enough to play MIDI festival last year in the south of France. It was a beautiful couple of days and after the first night of revelry we decided to hit the beach. We all dosed up on sun cream, as the temperature was close to 30 degrees celsius and had the occasional swim to wash away the headaches. It wasn’t till we got back to the hotel that I realised I had forgotten to put cream on my legs and feet. They had pretty much turned purple… I bitched and moaned about it for the next three days! So my last word of advice would be not to forget your legs! Hey Courtney, how are you? Yeah, I’m good… pretty, pretty good. We’re doing an album preview tonight. We’re playing the album in full to like 100 people in Sydney, which we did in Melbourne last night. What festivals are you playing this year? We are going ALL OVER. I can’t keep up sometimes. We’ve a couple that haven’t been announced yet too. What was your highlight of the festival circuit last year? Everything seems like a highlight these days: one thing is as exciting as the other. Which festival are you looking forward to the most? All of them really. Newport Folk Festival will be cool. Lots of people make the connection with [Bob] Dylan, so when I found out about the festival, I said “is that the one?!” I just need someone to shout out “Judas!”

when I plug in with my Telecaster. You’re playing Glastonbury again this year. How did it go in 2014? It was incredible. We went to watch Blondie and it took like an hour to get to the next stage afterwards. It was a lot of fun, though I’ve never seen so many people in one place. What are your expectations for the year? To build on where 2014 left off? Everything is like a new journey. Last year we did it as a three piece, but now we’ve got Dan on guitar. It’s pretty much the same as it was last year, but with a new album to boot and a couple of different guitars and new pedals. So there’s no new and extravagant stage props yet? No fireworks yet, or anybody coming down from the roof. You need to ante it up every year and new guitars and pedals are enough for now.

Festival in Berlin, though, is on an island in the middle of a lake - when we played

there in 2013 Austin and I swam out into the water there to watch a DJ. We didn’t have any Speedos or trunks though. Just dirty undies. What’s the best way to smuggle booze in to a festival? - Dan, via email Austin: When we were 16 we had those big farmer coats that had big pockets in the back. But otherwise put it in your pants and look confident. James: Security at festivals always have those golf buggy things to get round the site easily. Hijack one of them and you’ll be 1 or 2mph too fast for any crusty spoilsports to stop you and your booze. How well do you think your new coat collection will hold up in a field? Georgie, via email Austin: It’s what coats are made for, I’m hoping things haven’t changed. Are you looking forward to Limp Bizkit at Reading? - Matt, via email Austin: I mean, I probably won’t watch

them, but festivals are a weird place, I probably will somehow watch them. I’m not a fan but that’s not important. Festivals are weird. Cav: KEEP ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING ROLLING. [It’s “Rollin’”, m9 - Ed.] What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you at a festival? Hattie, via email Austin: I ended up taking our van for a drive around the field with Cav to show off at Beacons, we were young and high. In the morning we saw the tracks I’d made and it turned out I’d missed this pond by half a metre. I slept in a cymbal case on the back of a tyre that night. James: When I was at Benicassim 2009 there was a hurricane. All the bands were cancelled, everyone’s tents were blown away, the main stage partially collapsed, two of my friends were hospitalised, it was pitch black the whole time because there was a power cut and then there was a fire. I was incredibly high at the time so I actually really enjoyed the whole ordeal.
