A time of limitless potential for both success and disaster, where stars will be born, pints will be sunk and all of us, at one point or another, will find ourselves weighing up the idea of pissing in a bottle rather than leaving the safety of our tents for a 4am Portaloo dash. Yet, while we like to think ourselves accurate cultural commentators - hell, maybe even cultural influencers if you really wanted to bestow the accolade (shucks, you’re making us blush) - even we cannot predict what will truly unfold over the coming months... In 2019, equality is the name of the game, and festivals are finally beginning to celebrate female artists in the way they’ve deserved all along. Interviews: Sarah Jamieson.

lance back at almost any festival line-up poster from the past decade and one thing is abundantly clear: there’s a whole lotta men. And while few would fancy arguing in favour of tokenism when it comes to festivals booking punters’ favourites, it’d also be naïve to claim there aren’t more than enough women in music to enhance an entire summer’s worth of line-ups.

In 2019, however, there’s finally been a shift. Thanks to a raft of new initiatives and a host of support from across live music, we’re heading into the new season with a host of incredible festival bills, boasting all manner of artists. “I think it’s extremely important,” London-based artist Georgia tells us of the latest actions to encourage more invitations to be extended to female artists. “Festivals have to reflect the changing nature of societies. It’s really exciting with what’s going on with gender equality in the world right now, people are feeling more accepted in places, particularly in the UK. This may not be said about other places, but festivals have to reflect this. The fact that still to this day there is an imbalance of gender equality in the line-ups is really backward. Anything to

help break these boundaries I’m all for and will support.” “Festivals set a precedent for the wider music scene,” adds Milk Teeth’s Becky Blomfield, explaining that festivals need to lead by example. “People see bands at festivals and then may consequently want to book them at a venue or for their own festival. If the representation isn’t broad not everybody is being given the same opportunity.” With the likes of Live Nation’s ReBalance programme and PRS Foundation’s Keychange initiative, which aims to encourage festivals and conferences to have a 50/50 split on their bills by 2022, already experiencing incredible success - over 45 festivals have already pledged to make this a reality - it’s not just those closer to home that are playing their part. Earlier this year, Barcelona’s Primavera Sound became the first major international festival to boast an equal bill, with the likes of Janelle Monáe, Cardi B and Solange set to appear. Aptly-titling it ‘The New Normal’, the festival made a statement explaining their 2019 approach: “Equality in the line up between men and women, a stylistic eclecticism that is patently obvious and the drive to constantly take risks to connect to the times we live in are central concepts of the Primavera Sound 2019 line-up. It is the culmination of what was intuited at the previous editions of the festival, heralded by the 226 names of which more than 50% are women, with a variety of genres.” So, if Primavera can manage it... It isn’t just major events that are paying attention though: independent festivals such as Standon Calling

have prided themselves on already having a good foundation laid, and look to be using this opportunity to do even more. “We’ve signed up for the Keychange pledge this year,” says the festival’s Ami Lord, “but it’s been important to have female artists represented across the bill for a while now. We’ve had at least one woman headline the main stage each year since 2015, and our second stage, Laundry Meadows has achieved gender parity for the past two years. We need the wider music industry to be more supportive of female artists too – only 17% of songwriters registered with PRS are women, which is a challenge, but it’s not an excuse for festivals to not set an example to the rest of the industry.” There’s no quick fix, but it’s really bloody great to see festivals across the world starting to take action. It’ll make for a bigger, brighter future for summers to come.

Plastic Bottles The planet may be on fire, but at least we can count on Glastonbury to lead the charge for change. They’ve launched a plan to tackle humanity’s quite frankly ridiculous plastic use by announcing that they won’t be selling any drinks served in single-use plastic bottles at this year’s event in a bid to cut waste. “It’s paramount for our planet that we all reduce our plastic consumption, and I’m thrilled that, together, we’ll be able to prevent over a million single-use plastic bottles from being used at this year’s festival,” says Glasto boss Emily Eavis. “I really hope that everyone - from ticket-holder to headliner will leave Worthy Farm this year knowing that even small, everyday changes can make a real difference. It’s now or never.” ⁣ So throw your own reusable bottle in your camping bag and save the planet in the process. Easy, right?

Vampire Weekend Return To boss Festival Season Vampire Weekend made a comeback of sorts last year with a four-date run at weekenders in Australia, Japan, the US and an appearance at End Of The Road here in the UK. But this summer they’re set to commit to festival season proper - this time with new album ‘Father Of The Bride’ in tow. “You really need to have a long lead time to put a tour together, so you have to start putting it together with the hope that the album will be done,” frontman Ezra Koenig explains, ahead of a summer which will see the band play Glastonbury, Mad Cool, NOS Alive, Open’er and more. “A couple of times I was just like, ‘The album’s not done’, and they’d have to scrap [the shows]. At first I was like, ‘Ah, I messed up – the album should’ve been out by now’. But then, actually, playing four festivals turned out to be very reasonable, and it did feel like a fun way to dip our toes back in – get used to being back on stage without the pressure of playing anything new, or presenting a whole new era or something.” This time around, however, the band will be fully immersed in their new ‘era’, with the festival debut of new songs such as the giddy, euphoric ‘ H a r m o n y Hall’ and the experimental weirdness of ‘Sunflower’ to look forward t o .

But while Vampy Weeks are firmly cemented at the top of any festival bill these days, the singer’s still just happy to be along for the ride. “On the one hand, every band wants to creep up the poster and get a little closer to darkness, and yet, at the same time, when I think of a few early Vampire Weekend festivals, it was fun being on stage at 1 or 2pm. Our music actually could work then,” he reminisces. “I don’t need to name names, but I have lots of memories of seeing artists at midday at Coachella, and the clothes they wear, they way they look, the way the music sounds, just all felt so out of place! Like, this music is not meant to be heard under sunlight. Whereas I think ours works both ways.” Whether basking in the midday sun, or closing out the stage with a bang, we’ll take Vampire Weekend’s long-awaited proper festival return whichever way they wanna give it.

This summer, a host of your faves are returning from their stint in the indie wilderness (or, more accurately, having a bit of time off in their houses) to take their rightful place back on the big stages. Throw your arms out wide and get ready to welcome this lot back into the warm bosom of festival season.

Bombay Bicycle Club

When national institutions BBC (no, not that one) announced their plans to go on an indefinite hiatus at the start of 2016, it sounded like the kind of noncommittal statement that might quietly, sneakily mean the end of the London quartet for good. Singer Jack Steadman released an album as Mr. Jukes and bassist Ed Nash went solo as Toothless, while guitarist Jamie MacColl launched a political campaign helping to get under-30s’ voices better heard within the Brexit debates. In January 2019, however, it turned out that these little jokers had made a collective new year’s resolution and, one rather exciting post to social media later, Bombay Bicycle Club were back in the game. They’ll be making their live comeback at Wilderness on 1st August, and, having already shared news that they’ve been back in the studio, it seems pretty damn likely that they’ll have some new music in tow. Why is this a Very Good Thing? Because across a decade-plus career, the band have gone from teenage indie tinkers to a genuinely experimental, eclectic voice in guitar music. Plus, won’t it be nice to have ‘Always Like This’ back on the main stage? ‘Course it will.

The Strokes

OK, so The Strokes haven’t exactly been prolific in their live outings for a good while – in fact, their last turn on UK soil, headlining Hyde Park’s BST in 2015, was their first since five years previous to that. But this June, the iconic quintet will be revving up the old machine (hopefully not the ‘Comedown Machine’ though – no-one really liked that one, guys...) for their traditional half-decade jaunt over the Atlantic to headline All Points East. Anyone that saw Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the festival last year will know that a good dose of gamechanging New York spirit goes down a real treat in Victoria Park’s spacious surrounds and, frankly, even if they just came out and played half a dozen songs off ‘Is This It’ and left then we’d prob still be happy. Everybody now, “Last niiiiiiiiiiite...”

Last year, Brody Dalle’s iconic punks reunited for a string of dates but never made it to UK shores. This year, they’ll return to Reading & Leeds to show all the young bucks exactly what a rock show should involve. Sure Post Malone may be topping the bill, but one look at the effortless cool of this lot and he’ll be quaking in his boots.

The Raconteurs

King of multi-tasking Jack White has so many bands and projects going on, it’d almost be easy to have forgotten all about The Raconteurs – his late-2000s collab with (among others) Brendan Benson. If that’s the case then here’s a case for reminding: juxtaposing White’s fizzing turns on ‘Steady As She Goes’ and ‘Salute Your Solution’ and Benson’s more restrained parts on ‘Level’ and ‘Hands’, they’re maybe the most surprising corner of the legend’s canon. Get on board.

Gossip

Back in the mid-’00s, Beth Ditto burst through a sea of trilbys and winklepickers to tear the alternative world a new one. Channelling the feminist un-fuck-withable spirit of riot grrrl but spinning it through a dance-punk lens, Gossip were a bright, brilliant force; an unapologetic band of outsiders that stood out like a sore thumb among the groups of skinny-jeaned indie boys that ruled the school. And then there was the little matter of uber-smash single ‘Standing In The Way Of Control’. In 2016, Ditto confirmed that the band had split, however this year they’ll be getting back in the van for a string of anniversary dates celebrating 10 years since 2009’s ‘Music For Men’.

Thanks for the memories, certain fields of the UK and beyond... While reasonably new events like All Points East and TRNSMT storm into the festival big leagues, each year we toast the ones that got left behind – the dogs who had their day but have now gone to the big kennel in the sky. Last year saw a glitterspangled hole where Secret Garden Party used to be, and this year we say farewell to Portmeiron’s odd-butexcellent weekender Festival No. 6, massive New York soiree Panorama and Rize: the rebranded version of every TOWIE cast member’s favourite excuse to drink tiny bottles of rosé and watch Dua Lipa, V Festival. That one, we’ll grant, was not that much of a surp-rize. Ho ho ho. Remaining festivals, we salute you, and may the odds ever be in your favour...

Stormzy’s headlining Glastonbury! Too big for his boots? Michael Eavis certainly didn’t think so when he booked Stormzy for the surprise headline set of the summer. But will the grime star kill it on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage, despite having released just one album - 2017’s ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ - when he was first announced? Here’s Wolf Alice’s Theo Ellis on why he’s sure it’s going to be bloody amazing. “Most of the country is probably a Stormzy fan. I think he’s probably one of the most well-rounded artists in the sense that ‘Gang Signs & Prayer’ has got such a broad scope. Then there’s his social and cultural impact. I think he might be the hardest person to hate. I first got into him when he did a song with Cadet, about four, five years ago, but I’ve never actually seen him live. That’s why I need to somehow get a ticket to Glastonbury next year so I can go and watch him headline. They’re like gold dust. An artist like Stormzy headlining Glastonbury is what should be happening right now and I don’t really see it as a risk in any way because his album is so relevant. I see it as logic. The genre he’s come from and some of the artists he shares an association with are some of the biggest artists in the county right now, so when people say it’s gonna alienate people, who’s it alienating? Middle-aged Metallica fans? There’s plenty to choose from. That’s the beauty of Glastonbury. It’s a very diverse festival of broad scope, so if you don’t like Stormzy that night, there’s a plethora of amazing music you probably do like. You can watch The Killers the next

day or whoever else. No-one forces you to stand by the main stage. The Pyramid Stage is fucking massive. Wolf Alice played it on our first album, which was definitely a bit too early, but it was absolutely nuts how big it is. Personally, I genuinely think it’s very difficult to headline Glastonbury with one album. Even if an artist is well-known or not, that’s not that many songs. But as a performer, his stagecraft is incredible look at what he did at the Mercury Prize! It will be like a real performance spectacle. I’m interested to see if it’s a live band and if he mixes it up, I’m fascinated. I feel like he’s going to do something really ambitious. I’ll tell you what though, the Glastonbury guestlist is very difficult to get on. This is a public call to Emily Eavis to let me in. If not, I’ll break in. And if that doesn’t work, you know what, I’ll just ask my manager.”

NICK HELM DECIDES Sometimes, dear readers, festivals aren’t all about the music. That’s right, other things do happen there too, like yoga classes and stand-up comedy. But rather than quiz a fitness instructor on what they reckon will be the big hit of the summer, we pinned down a real-life funny man to rate (and slate) the biggest prospects of 2019’s festival season. And since he bills himself as a “rock musician” as well - thanks Wikipedia - who better for the job than Mr Nick Helm...

Lizzo - Juice

I’ve not enjoyed a song like this since my TV got stuck on the Sky Home Screen for an entire afternoon last spring. While furiously trying to work out what the problem was, I found that as the Home Screen music looped round and round it drifted me into a trancelike state of serenity and pretty soon I didn’t care that I couldn’t access my Stored Favourites. The 1975 have gone some distance to turning this hypnotic gibberish into something commercial and that should be applauded. In the case of my Sky Box it turned out that the batteries were running low in my remote and as a temporary fix I simply took the back off, rolled them round a bit and got a bit more juice out of them until I could replace them permanently. 5/5

Billie Eilish - Bury A Friend

Wow. I loved this song. Chilling, scary, catchy, and after I watched a YouTube video explaining it to me, complex to boot. As a die-hard Alice Cooper fan whose interest in popular music stuck fast in 1995, there’s a lot to like here, maybe I’ll update my tastes. 5/5

Post Malone - Better Now

THE Uber anthem of the past three months. I can’t count the number of trips I’ve taken, just about holding my shit together as I passably make small talk trying to maintain my rating of 4.77, while in the back of my brain every fibre of my being has wanted to tear my clothes off and sing this on the front lawn of all my exes’ houses. 4.77/5

George Ezra - Shotgun

George Ezra went on the Spanish package holiday of a lifetime and wrote a song about it. Among the things he enjoyed on his two-week break were the architecture, deep sea diving and lager tops (pint of lager with a splash of lemonade in the top to make it a bit more drinkable). He didn’t have time for the verse where “He’s been wearing chinos / eating food like Nando’s / in a rented condo”, but that’s a small price to pay for a tune so catchy by the fifteenth listen you’ll want an actual shotgun. So not just a catchy song but a clever title. Expect to hear a lot more of this! 5/5

FINALLY a song that totally gets everything that encapsulates all that is me! It ain’t my fault that I’m out here getting loose either! And I’ve been telling people for years to blame it on my juice! This song is so sassy it’s just bumped Lady Marmalade off the Top 5 shortlist of songs to be played at my funeral. 5/5

Foals - Exits

I haven’t gone to the effort of looking up any deeper meaning to this song, but with lyrics like “Now the sea eats the sky / But they say it’s a lie / There’s no birds left to fly / We’ll hide out” and “But the world’s upside down / In a world upside down”, it’s clear Foals are hugely influenced by the 1972 film The Poseidon Adventure and to a lesser extent its sequel and subsequent remake Beyond the Poseidon Adventure (1979) and Poseidon (2006). This song sent shivers up my spine as it took me back to when I was five, sat cross-legged on my grandparents’ living room rug watching the Gene Hackman disaster epic for the first time. Never before has a song so encapsulated a film in my mind’s eye for me than this and it’s just a shame it’s several decades too late to be used over said film’s closing credits. A perfect fit. 5/5

Stormzy - Shut Up

Twitter can be a minefield. Lots of people with opinions out there and more distressingly, opinions that they think I need to be aware of. Well, here is my new knight in shining armour as Stormzy rides up on his steed and tells all the haters to “Shut Up!” or “Shut-tah!” as he puts it. Now instead of blocking or muting people I can simply forward them a link to this song and sit back on my office chair in my two-bedroom flat that I own with my fingers locked behind my head, nodding to myself with my tongue, tonguing my lower lip pocket in satisfaction as I imagine their dismayed reaction. 5/5

IDLES - Never Fight A Man With A Perm

Holy fuck! If you held a very special hypersensitive microphone up then, this song is what raw, unapologetic testicles would sound like. In a good way! Any song that references Michael Keaton and uses the slur “You look like a walking thyroid” gets an instant pass from me. 5/5

Matching bold, euphoric pop with an incredible work ethic, we meet Sigrid just after the release of debut album ‘Sucker Punch’ as she gets ready to take on her biggest summer yet. Words: Rachel Finn. any wannabe musicians spend their formative years dreaming of performing to arenas of screaming fans or spending their summers travelling around the festival circuit. Not so for Sigrid. A couple of years before breakout track ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ arrived in February 2017, the singer was considering a very different path indeed, tossing up the noble decision of whether she should become a teacher or a lawyer. “I wanted to work for the Norwegian government. I was dreaming of the UN or the EU or something like that, international law…” she remembers of her early career plans. “I never dared to think music was possible for me and I had no plans of becoming a musician. I thought I was going to university to study, but I think I always had that little music thing in me.” Clearly the singer had big ambitions either way, but it wasn’t until she moved from the small coastal town of Ålesund, where she was born and raised to Bergen after finishing high school that she began to think music was even a remote possibility. Fast forward a few years and, rather than carving out a career in parliament or in a classroom, Sigrid is currently backstage at The O2 in London, preparing for another show on her run supporting George Ezra, performing in front of thousands of people each night.

It’s a criticism echoed across the festival sphere where, over the past few years, the gender diversity of line-ups has been increasingly scrutinised, with a real push towards wider representation slowly taking shape. “My experience is that there are a lot of festivals that could do a lot more to get a more equal balance of female and male musicians and I think it’s all about looking a bit harder,” she notes. “There are a lot of incredibly talented people out there of both, or all, genders so I think for making a change you need to start at some point. Looking a bit harder is the right way to start.”

Alongside early hit ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’, and the oft-told tale of how it was inspired by feeling patronised by older men during a writing session, another track ‘Business Dinners’ is in a similar vein, a glitchy, off-kilter number about the experience of potential labels trying to mould her image before she was signed. It’s a stab at an industry that just wants her to be “sweeter, better, angel / pictures, numbers, figures / deeper, smarter,” summing up the contradictions facing many young female artists trying to break. Sigrid meanwhile, “standing on the shoreline”, just wants to “swim and float”.

“I definitely think about festivals when I write. I’m guessing a lot of musicians must think quite visually when they write music, like films or art, and they can see the music or things like that. For me, it’s very much about the live side of things,” she explains of her writing process. “I didn’t really have a huge theme for the album. I just wanted it to be a collection of my favourite songs. It’s been a very organic process of just writing and having fun in the studio and I think you can hear that in the songs. Most of the vocal takes are like [they were] on the day, because we have that raw energy.”

choruses and earwormy hooks, ‘Sucker Punch’ may be an album custom-made for festival crowds, but there’s more bite within its twelve tracks than your average radio-friendly collection. Sure, it treads some well-used pop tropes - there’s the song about the all-consuming crush (the title track), another about relationships that aren’t quite relationships (‘Mine Right Now’) and one that implores you to stay out all night and dance away all your troubles (‘Don’t Feel Like Crying’) - but there’s depth there too.

igrid is at a mid-point of sorts right now: debut album ‘Sucker Punch’ is finally out (it hit No.4 in the charts in the UK and No. 1 in her home country of Norway, something she describes as equal parts “weird” and “surreal”) and she’s preparing to head off on a huge run of festival shows this summer, a trip which will take her across over ten countries and back again, making it her biggest summer yet. But she’s ready for the challenge.

“I studied politics for like, one month and I dropped out,” the 22-year-old recalls. Perched on a sofa, sipping on a bottle of water, she seems completely at home in these daunting surroundings and totally committed to becoming even more successful; dropping out, it’s safe to say, was probably the right choice. Within her first few months in Bergen, she met her management and began travelling to London for writing sessions, while her friends remained scattered around Europe, studying medicine, law and other such traditionally academic pursuits. “It’s very different. I had a music column [in a student newspaper] and I was in the studio a bit, but during that half year I began to understand that I really wanted to do music because it didn’t just, like, happen. I understood that I really needed to work for this.”

twist: unlike most of us, for Sigrid, at the end of the day there’s a stage and an audience of expectant fans waiting, regardless of how exhausting the day has been. “It’s a completely different beast to play a festival, it really is,” Sigrid says, who last year ticked off two more ‘bucket list’ goals, playing shows at Coachella and Roskilde in Denmark. “Like, it’s ruthless! Festivals, summer, travelling-wise, can be really hard. That song is about how fucking exhausting it is to do festivals sometimes because we’re often in three different countries in three days and they’re so far from each other. You sometimes have to drive to weird places out in fields to get there... or take a fucking boat! But it’s really fun and very rewarding. It’s just mad, but it’s really fun. I think that’s what I wanted to convey.”

Sigrid’s Festival Highlights

This summer will also see Sigrid return to Glastonbury after she made her debut at the festival in 2017, a highlight among her relentless touring schedule and a long-time career goal. “Something I love with British festivals is that it just seems like people don’t really care about the weather - you just go hard anyways and I love that, I love that attitude! Glastonbury was one of the first festivals I heard about from Norway, because growing up in a country like that, I think we’re very influenced by Britain on the music side. And I found out right before I went on stage that Glastonbury is the size of my hometown in Norway multiplied by six!”

2017: Glastonbury

hile Sigrid’s journey as an artist over the past couple of years may have taken her to stages around the world, to make ‘Sucker Punch’, Sigrid and her team headed home, recording the album at Ocean Sound Recordings (also the birthplace of records by Arcade Fire, Sampha and Anna Of The North) on a small, rural island fifteen minutes from where she grew up. It’s a place that also served as the venue for her first ever gig at age sixteen, and where she recorded some of her earliest songs. “There’s not a lot to do out there,” she says, laughing. “There’s no cafes or bars or venues to go to. It’s just looking at cows and nature, but I think that’s something you don’t really get to see a lot when you’re travelling so that’s why so many musicians go there to record, because it’s so special. It’s really beautiful. The only distraction you have is the nature. It’s kind of like my second home.”

2013: Sommerfesten

Sigrid made her festival debut at the tender age of 16, performing at Sommerfesten on the tiny island of Giske in Norway. “It gave me music joy and it was the first time I really felt like performing in front of people was exciting. I felt like I had something to bring with me in a way,” she remembers.

Debuting at the Park Stage at Glastonbury two years ago proved to be somewhat of a ‘pinch-me’ moment for the singer: “I remember that was one of the moments [I remember] the most, going off stage and being like, shit! Then we went we up the hill, walking up in the sunshine. My whole team was there and we had a beer and looked over the whole thing. It was incredible.”

2018: Electric Picnic

The inspiration for her song ‘Sight Of You’ and one of her favourite festival performances of all time, Electric Picnic in Ireland was one of the first shows where Sigrid remembers being truly overwhelmed by the crowd: “It almost hurt in my ears and I was just really touched by the whole thing. I was crying after the show because I was like, ‘I don’t wanna leave! Can we stay? Can we just hang out in Ireland?!’

In an industry where any vague deviation from ‘the norm’ can be used as a PR angle, much has been made of Sigrid as an ‘anti-popstar’, with her chill attitude, casual way of dressing and nofrills stage show. Her identity is one that seems a world away from the extravagant imagery of some of the past decade’s most noted pop stars - the kitsch, colourful world of Katy Perry or Lady Gaga’s high-concept aesthetic. Yet Sigrid isn’t so fussed about whether she’s part of a new movement of pop or not. Questions about her image, she stresses, “[are] totally cool”, but she’d rather just keep things about “my music and my way of communicating emotions”. “[Lady Gaga] is one of the artists I respect the

After Sigrid’s hectic summer of festivals, the rest of the year will see her almost constantly on the road, touring the US on her biggest headline run yet and heading back to the UK for another string of shows, before eventually venturing back to the studio to work on new music. Pressed on where she sees her career in music going however, she’s cagily keeping those plans under wraps for now.

“Oh, I always have ideas. I never stop writing. I think I’m always humming something new or listening to new music that inspires me. I am extremely ambitious and I have big goals, but it’s a bit important for me to keep them a bit to myself. What if it doesn’t happen, you know?” she says, carefully. “But what I can say is that I think my biggest goal is to just be happy with what I do and I am right now. Always keep it about the music and keep writing, because that’s where I think everything comes out from. I’m super positive about everything that’s gonna happen. It’s gonna be a very exciting year - and years - ahead of me.”

One such account (@sigrid.as.cats) posts near daily photos of Sigrid alongside a suspiciously similar looking cat, striking the same pose or wearing the same outfit as the singer. “Nothing I do is safe!” she laughs. “I had a cat growing up so cats are my main thing. I’ve never met the person who runs it, but it’s a really funny account. [My fans] are really sweet.”

Ah, music fandoms. You’ve got your Beliebers, your Swifities and your Sheerios (that’s Ed Sheeran fans, believe it or not). But although Sigrid fans have yet to adopt an official name for themselves (Sigridios? Sigrideers?), they have come out in full force to show their devotion in full meme-form.

Right now, however, Sigrid is mainly focused on her own busy next few months ahead and dealing with the strange experiences that can come with a steadily-rising mainstream pop career. One of the weirdest, she admits, is being recognised in public, something that’s happening more and more frequently as her star continues to ascend. “It’s mad, like people are coming up

Not content with just performing, she’s keen to stress her hands-on approach to making her music, as a co-writer and co-arranger of all her songs. She’s also recently started writing for other artists as well, with a credit on Rudimental’s new song ‘Adrenaline’, and describes herself as open to collaborating with other artists in future. “It was like my first proper big cut, so I’m really really proud of that,” she explains excitedly of the track. “I think I always put so much of myself and my personality and my style into everything I write, so I guess I always have me in the back of my head. But I thought it would be really cool to try and write for someone else.”

Return of the Titans

Ahead of their biggest summer of festivals yet - including a headline spot at this year’s All Points

East - Bring Me The Horizon have nothing left to prove. Words: Sarah Jamieson.

ring Me The Horizon are no strangers to a challenge. After all, for the best part of their fifteen-year lifespan, the quintet - who, admittedly, have come in a series of different guises along the way - have all too frequently found themselves noseto-nose with all manner of hurdles.

2015’s ‘That’s The Spirit’ – saw the band flirt with electronics, it’s on ‘amo’ that they seem to master it.

“Right from the beginning, we knew we wanted to push for something that felt exciting and different for us,” begins keyboardist Jordan Fish, on the headspace that the band found themselves in during the early writing sessions for ‘amo’. Arguably their bravest, most sonically ambitious record to date, it’s an album that defies their

“We’ve never really repeated ourselves,” confirms bassist Matt Kean. “I guess the main difference between ‘Sempiternal’ and ‘That’s The Spirit’,” picks up Jordan, “was that it was almost a refining of what we had dabbled in. Whereas between these latest two, it was very much about us saying, ‘Let’s not do that’ and we tried to avoid using any of the same tricks that we’ve relied on.”

2019 sees the band as an entirely different prospect to the scrappy metalcore teens which performed that day. A decade on, with a slew of arena shows to their name, and recent Number One album ‘amo’ now firmly in their back pocket, they’re no longer a niche concern, bullied by the media, while still leading a pack of screamo scenester bands that time has since done its best to forget. Instead, following the release of their genre-twisting new record, they’re standing on

place as a stereotypical ‘rock band’ and elevates them to entirely new ground. Collaborations with the likes of Grimes and Rahzel offer up a slicker, more varied look at the ways in which heavy music can be warped, and while their previous records – 2013’s ‘Sempiternal’ and

Therein lies one of the band’s greatest strengths. “I think one thing with rock music is that it doesn’t change,” Matt comments, touching upon the idea that rock as a genre has a tendency to feel less progressive, “and every other genre does.” “For me, the rock genre itself doesn’t really reward experimentation,” adds Jordan. “It seems to rely on the same chord progressions, patterns and things, and that’s why it feels quite stuck in time. When you look at our Spotify related artists, that always, to me, is a sign that there aren’t many bands who are willing to enter that middle ground between rock music and pop, or electronic, or dance music. There aren’t many bands in that void, but that’s definitely where

we are and it’s what we’re more interested in exploring.” “People have eclectic tastes so why not have an album that explores that?” joins in Matt. “Rather than just stay in a lane that so many other bands do.” Whether or not you agree with their assessment on the current state of rock, it’s clear to see that Bring Me The Horizon’s approach is paying off. Fresh from a UK tour ahead of ‘amo’’s release – which saw them play The SSE Hydro in Glasgow for a second time, before rounding off the tour with two almost intimate shows at London’s Alexandra Palace – the band have now set their sights on festival season once again, with one particular jewel in their crown: a headline spot at All Points East, alongside a bill curated by the band. And

while a handful of the acts do cater to the band’s heavier fanbase – Architects and While She Sleeps still get prime spots – they’ve also invited along a raft of artists who feel to be making a statement right now, from the likes of hip-hop legends Run The Jewels to DIY faves IDLES, via up-and-coming trap rapper Scarlxrd. “It’s either artists making a statement,” Jordan confirms of their choices, “or those who are pushing forwards musically. It’s basically artists who are interesting to us – they’re all people who are doing their own thing.” “We’ve also always had more fun playing at festivals which are more diverse,” admits Matt. “People seem more open to stuff. We’ve played a lot of festivals in the past where we would be the heaviest band on the line-up and we’d go

down well. I think people aren’t given enough credit for being more open-minded when it comes to music.” Have no fear, though: if the growled vocals and blast beats of ‘Count Your Blessings’ are still more your thing, the band haven’t abandoned them completely. “We look back on those songs fondly,” confirms Matt. “This is our fifteenth year of being in a band, so it’s kinda like looking back at old photos of yourself. When there’s only a few years between then [and now], you kinda think, ‘Oh god, I can’t believe I used to look like that’, but as you get older you reminisce and miss those days a little bit, and it feels like we’re at that stage of our career now.” “Now there’s no real need to justify who we are,” Jordan takes over. “We’re past trying to prove that we’re not your average scene band.”

BACKDROP Bring Me The Horizon are no strangers when it comes to stage production – after all, their final arena run for ‘That’s The Spirit’ in 2016 saw them perform against a huge, seamless set of video screens, which dwarfed the stage itself. Unsurprisingly, then, they’ve got something pretty special up their sleeve for this coming festival season...

“It’s gonna be our biggest show we’ve ever done, and our most ambitious,” confirms Matt, looking ahead to their headline slot at London’s All Points East. “A lot of work is going into it and it’s gonna be really crazy. We don’t really have any restraints at all with an outdoor festival; in arenas you have the venue [to take into account], obviously, or if you’re at a festival that’s not your own... But because it’s our own festival, we can basically do what we want! Our only limitation is our imagination. And maybe finances...” “Basically, everyone else is gonna have to squidge into a tiny part of the stage,” laughs Jordan, “because we’re gonna have layers upon layers of production.” Consider that an official heads up to everyone on the bill that day.

It’s an incredible place to find the band in: entirely comfortable within their own skin, not only have they overcome all manner of hurdles thrown their way – you name it, they’ve almost certainly been handed it – but they seem to be at the height of their strength. “We do have this thing where, when the pressure’s on, generally our band is at its best,” confirms Jordan, looking ahead to their next feat. “Festivals very much provide that environment. You know, when you look out, you can think, ‘I don’t know if these guys are gonna like us’ and sometimes it feels like it could be a real stinker, but usually we’ll go on and everyone will just go crazy.”

Perennial festival favourites and the original greatest showmen The Hives have been slaying festival stages for yonks now. A high-kicking, monochrome-suited rock’n’roll machine, the Swedes know exactly how to pull focus in the best possible way. Chief ringmaster Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist is here to let you in on his secrets. Interview: Lisa Wright.

When It’s Bad, Sometimes It’s Still Good

“We have some influences, but mainly we were influenced by bad shows we did in the beginning - being bad and trying to make those shows better. Just years of trial and error. Although I do think even when everything we did was horrible, we were still fun to look at. It was entertaining even when it was horrible. I guess also I was influenced by one New Year’s special I watched when I was seven or eight and James Brown and The Who were on it. That’s pretty much where I got everything from – from those ten minutes of television when I was seven years old. I’ve been working it since then and it still seems to be working now.”

“There was a Japanese punk band called Guitar Wolf and they were saying what was important in rock’n’roll, and I think they’re right. They said first off, it’s about looks and jumping. Jumps are a very important factor. People go to rock shows to see bravery, to see people do something that maybe they wouldn’t have the confidence to do – kind of like watching someone stage jumping off a skyscraper, which I wouldn’t do but it would be entertaining to watch other people do it!”

“I once tried to jump around a corner; it didn’t work and I ended up in a hospital wth concussion in Switzerland. I was absolutely certain I could do it at the time.

It seemed plausible because I was so pumped up on rock’n’roll, and being a star and shit that I tried to jump around some metal scaffolding, which I know can’t be done. Then I landed on my head and I had to go to hospital. I finished the gig though. I went back on stage right away! I didn’t know I had concussion until someone said they saw me pass out after.”

frontman is good when he looks like he’s practised a lot; sometimes it’s good when he looks like he’s never practised. There are different ways of being good. Where do I land? Well, obviously at the very top. Being in The Hives makes me feel invincible, and they make me feel like I can jump around corners. I live for anything that makes you feel like you can jump around corners.”

“In the beginning, in terms of show, there wasn’t much competition; it was so out of vogue to be entertaining. It was more in vogue to try consciously to not care, which led to a lot of people not being very entertaining at all. I think a lot of bands that act like they don’t have a dress code, they’re still wearing their favourite wornout T-shirt and their favourite worn-out jeans; even if people look like they don’t care then they do because you want to look your best when you’re on stage. I guess we’re just not pretending like we don’t care – of course we care.”

“Last weekend, we played to 65,000 people in Mexico City with Arctic Monkeys and I think that was our best show so far, so that’s good that the curve is still rising.”

“All I hear people say is, ‘You are the best band of the festival’. So people should go and see us because we’ll be the best band of the festival, pretty much regardless of who’s playing. And you shouldn’t take that from me: you should take that from our millions of fans.”

Let’s start off easy: you’re packing for Glastonbury and dreading the endless crawl from bus to campsite. Do you suck up the slog and drag the kitchen sink across Worthy Farm or just pack some pants and a smile and skip merrily along freely? It depends on how long you’re staying for. If it’s two nights, pack the basics and skip away. If it’s three or more, I feel like a comfy tent is essential. The slog will be worth it when you wake up in your blissful cocoon.

I always pack snacks so that I can keep the food budget to a minimum should I be caught in that predicament (this is where the slog to the campsite pays off). As for booze, I feel like my mates wouldn’t let me go dry for the rest of the weekend! We’d figure something out.

Your phone runs out of battery and you have not one damn clue where you’re camped. How do you survive the night? Must. Find. Friends. If that fails, must. Make. Friends. If that fails, party on until daylight. Seriously though, one of my biggest festival dreads is having to sleep in a mud bath. I don’t leave my tent until I am 100% certain I can find my way back.

You spot your absolute favourite musician strolling in your direction on their own, looking pretty cheery. How do the next five minutes unfold? They say never meet your heroes, I disagree! I would walk up and say thank you for making *insert album / track title here*, then wish them a good set. I go by the less is more rule on this occasion, as I definitely, most certainly will freeze at any given moment. I don’t tend to ask for a photo, I see it as a nice memory that I keep for myself.

Travelling is, let’s face it, part and parcel of being in a touring band, but if anyone claims to know the rules of the road better than this M5-loving lot, well, they’re probably lying. Here, Sports Team’s Alex Rice runs the gamut of roadside banter. Interview: Will Richards. This summer, countless groups of mates will pack into a Peugeot 206 and head down to their festival of choice. As you’ve shown in your ‘M5’ video, you seem like experts in doing things properly - what’s your one tip for a successful trip down to a festival? Try and take command of the middle lane as soon as possible then tread a steady 60mph.

What’s your #1 driving game? I-Spy gets old after a while… Wheelies. It’s a pretty intense decision, deciding who gets the front seat: is it done on a rotation system, a game of shotgun, a simple fight to the death or your very own form of battle? Front is actually not where you want to be. You can’t see the screen, which is in the back. You’re also burdened with the added pressure of making patter with ticket attendants, drive-through operators, and immigration authorities. Oli’s had a tough time of that in the past. I think we’ve all settled into our positions quite nicely now though, the seats are really moulded to us.

Kylie wakes up after a heavy night and starts the day… slow. She tries to clean her ears but a cotton bud falls down into her ear. “I just can’t get you out of my head!” she cries.

The Legends’ Slot at Glastonbury is always a highlight, but this year they’ve truly outdone themselves, bringing the one, the only Kylie to Worthy Farm. Aside from her performance though, how will she spend her days down at the farm? Dear readers, we have some theories…

The booze is kicking in, and, unable to throw some shrimp on the barbie (festival health and safety these days, huh?), she heads down to the food trucks. Oh, an ostrich burger? That’s love at first sight.

Wandering through the site, Kylie happens across her old mucker Michael Eavis, who, as it turns out, is in a bit of a pickle: his tractor’s broken down! No problem for Kylie though: with plenty of experience from her Neighbours days, she gets it up and running again in no time.

PM Kylie’s connected with old friends Nick Cave and James Dean Bradfield, and they’re trying to find Robbie to get the whole gang back together. Sadly it turns out he’s too busy partying like a Russian in the Stone Circle, still trying to track down Liam Gallagher.

Braving one of the festival’s pretty gruesome long drops, Kylie’s disgusted to open the door to discover that the seat is covered in some kind of piss.

Things start to get looser as the day progresses, though Kylie is increasingly distracted by text after text from Jason Donovan, who’s stranded outside the festival without a ticket. “No,” she repeatedly insists, “I can’t get you on the list”.

As we know, Aussies stick together, and before long, she’s tracked down Kevin Parker, who, as we know from 2017, is an expert in having a herculean Glasto bender. Soon, they’re off to the farm’s notorious South East Corner.

As part of her Worthy Farm journey, Kylie’s decided to be a good samaritan and volunteer down in the kids’ field. After all, she doesn’t mind doing it for the kids.

Upon reaching the mecca that is Shangri-La, Kylie decides that the pair will head to the Hell section of the Heaven and Hell installation. After all, she tells Mr Tame Impala, it’s better the devil you know.

Emerging from her tent, she’s horrified to realise upon wandering through the campsite that, for once, she’s not the only person around wearing gold hot pants.

Heading down to the coffee van to grab a caramel macchiato to get the day started, Kylie realises she’s left her wallet in the tent - before she knows it, she’s spinning around back up the hill.

AM After stumbling back to her tent following a mega night, Kylie stays up for hours chatting to the lovely folks in the camp next door. They talk at an increasingly relentless pace about life, death and everything in between. A truly heartwarming end to the day, when good neighbours really do become good friends.

IDLES’ moustachioed axe-wielder loves running around the stage in his kecks. He does it during most shows; he does it posing in photos; heck, we’re surprised he didn’t turn up to The BRITs with just a pair of boxers and a cheeky grin. This year, the glorious punks are spreading the love around the globe and, frankly, if you can’t cool off in yer undies in 30 degree Spanish heat, then when can you?

Last time The 1975 headlined a festival (Latitude 2017, FYI), the singer spent the whole set repeating “The first of June, The 1975”, leading fans to jump to the notexactly-outrageous conclusion that he might be referring to an album drop date. Fast forward a year and our optimistic hero was sat in the page of this very magazine, telling us the record was “nowhere near done”. This year, the band headline Reading & Leeds. Let’s see whether he’s learnt from his mistakes, eh.

Over the course of Sports Team’s short but sizzling career to date, the gobby frontman’s tried to start a banter-ful war of words with – among others – Shame, HMLTD and “all those Irish punk bands” (sorry Fontaines DC). Normally, these beefs occur behind the safety of Twitter; put him in out in the wild, however, and well... best get the arnica in.

At last year’s Benicassim festival, LG stopped his Sunday night headline set midway through after a front-row punter unceremoniously lobbed a fish at him on stage. “Fucking stinky, smelly fish” he commented, accurately. Previous to that, the singer played an intimate show during which someone slowly peeled a potato throughout, like a strange, starchy protest. The answer? Get rid of temptation. Because fuck it, the only thing you need to actually consume at a Gallagher show is pints.
