Whether it’s the inevitable bombast of Kasabian’s return as headliners, the prospect of new material from Haim, Arcade Fire, The Vaccines or (whisper it and think great thoughts and it might happen), Wolf Alice, Katy Perry’s spot at Glastonbury, The 1975 topping the bill at Latitude, or the chance to discover your new favourite band, this year’s festivals are set to be a whirlwind of greatness. One of the last times we caught cover star Mac DeMarco at a festival, he was singing Coldplay’s ‘Yellow’ to deal with technical difficulties, so ‘expect the unexpected’ as it were when it comes to his 2017 spots. We discover that one of Bastille’s festival slots comes precisely before before tartan-clad crooner Rod Stewart, no less, while Mumford & Sons spill on some of their favourite new acts they’ve invited along to their Gentlemen of the Road Latitude takeover. From the most pant-wettingly exciting headline sets of the summer to buzzy newcomers in tiny tents, farmland in the English countryside to airfields across mainland Europe (and beyond), there are a lot of things to look forward to across the incoming festival season. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a whole heap of them.

Kasabian Leicester’s most famous sons return to headline Reading & Leeds, with a bombastic new record in tow. Serge Pizzorno tells Lisa Wright what the band have in store.

“L

iterally from getting signed, ‘infiltration’ is the word we’ve used. It’s the key. Trojan horse, man,” laughs Kasabian guitarist and chief songwriting mastermind Serge Pizzorno down the phone from his Leicester home. It’s the mindset that’s turned his band into the most gloriously ludicrous festival headliners on the block. While Ed Sheeran’s strumming his acoustic and Metallica are ploughing through three hours of oldies, Kasabian have opted to use their mighty platform to throw a gleefully OTT communal party. Let it not be forgotten that during their inaugural Glastonbury headline, on arguably the biggest musical stage in the world, they opted to bring out Noel Fielding dressed as a vampire backed by neon pink projections saying ‘Cordial’ and ‘Canister’ just because they thought it was funny. “You can put whatever you want on there, but there’s so much ‘content’ in the world,” says Serge. “We thought, imagine having a screen that just said the name of a Street Fighter character. You just wouldn’t know what to make of it.”

Therein lies the Kasabian charm, and this year, with new album ‘For Crying Out Loud’ (itself, a gloriously Alan Partridge-esque title) in tow, they get to do it all again as they top the bill at Reading & Leeds for a second time. “We’ve learnt a lot in the [five] years since the first time,” enthuses Serge about the band’s August appointment. “Especially over the last few years we’ve realised what one of our gigs is. It’s that combination of the euphoria of an old school rave and then going to see a really full throttle rock’n’roll band as well. It’s very much a gathering, a pure celebration.” Having headlined every major UK festival as well as putting on a

memorable, celebratory hometown party at Leicester’s Victoria Park in 2014, there’s arguably little left for Kasabian to tick off in terms of on stage achievements. Along with a select few others (Arctic Monkeys, Muse et al), the quartet are in the uppermost echelon of Big British Bands: one who can crack out an O2 Arena show like it’s a casual Tuesday night. So now, it seems, the aim is refinement. “There’s something about going to see a band and being in front of the stage with your mates when the weather’s right, and the drugs are right, and you’re just there and everyone’s together. I know that feeling so well,” the guitarist continues. “So when you’re creating that on stage, you can only radiate it. It’s like we’re sort of in the mosh [with everyone]. You want to get people to certain levels at different points during the set; there’s a real art to that and it’s something we’re always working on.” Now, alongside a catalogue of hits that could rival the best of them, Kasabian have a new beast alongside them to help elevate the set to new heights. Inspired by “pop structures and [Motown producer] Berry Gordy”, ‘For Crying Out Loud’ is as full of colossal bangers as you’ve come to expect, but filtered through an even more direct lens. “I got obsessed with concepts and experimentation last time and spent a year in the studio working on fucking mental noise. I was like, oh my god, the idea of doing that again...,” he laughs. “So I just wanted these tracks to have pop structures and to be joyful. Just from rehearsing, this album has a real sense of hope. Naturally as an artist you feel more comfortable with melancholy and drama so it’s hard to make joyful music, but I wanted to make something uplifting. It’s pure summertime grooves.” Visually too, the band are on a mission (albeit a slightly more vague one) to craft something new. “I don’t want to have just animation screens, I’m buzzing off actually making real things. Huge lights and huge tears like on the album artwork and these huge things that just exist rather than projecting stuff on to a screen,” he explains. We think he means he wants to make some sculptures. “I want to create a little box of energy; I like the idea that when everybody’s looking into the stage it’s like they’re looking into some mad club. Like, what is going on in that room?!” 10

Talking to Serge, it’s hard not to be enthused with the same giddy energy as you are listening to his band. In a world where Ed Sheeran – a popstar beloved by the Aunt Gladyses of the country – is topping the Pyramid Stage, Kasabian in all their unapologetic, hedonistic splendour are surely needed more than ever. Instead of spouting platitudes about just being pleased to be invited, Serge describes a headline performance as “becoming this huge giant in a manga cartoon stomping over the city”. “You’ve got to turn into this version of yourself who’s able to go on stage and be like, ‘Everything’s going to be alright, no one need worry. It’s gonna be fucking massive’,” he notes, sagely.

And while over the course of their career many have attempted to ridicule Kasabian from atop a more ‘tasteful’ pedestal, truth is it’s far, far more fun down here. “Some bands will only ever stay in a tent and that’s great, but there’s some that are able to communicate to that many people and I think we’re one of them,” he grins. “We always looked at the poster and thought, ah it’d be good to have one of them with your name at the top. Our show is just a big show. It’s bringing as many people together as we can. It’s pure energy”. DIY

Seeing our faves stepping up to headliner status is something we’ll never get bored of.

ver the past two years, alt-J and The Maccabees have been given their big moment on the Friday night of Latitude - fast becoming a night devoted to the new breed every July. Foals also got their first big headline slot there. This year is no different, and sees The 1975 solidifying their place as festival headliners. When the band headlined the biggest tent on the final night of last year’s Reading Festival, Matty Healy said they were offered a Main Stage slot, playing right before the headliners. They said no, that they’d only return when they were bill-toppers themselves. Few bands could get away with only accepting such slots so early in their career. Latitude, then, will be the first stop on Matty and co’s inevitable trample through top spots at every festival around. The Friday slot is becoming notorious for giving newer bands the step up to headliner status, but if we’re honest, The 1975 are breezing there all on their own. Glastonbury before 2020? You bet. DIY

Elsewhere this summer, more of our favourites are making their first steps towards headliner status, topping the bill at a series of smaller festivals. Sundara Karma, hot off the back of releasing huge debut album ‘Youth Is Only Ever Fun In Retrospect’, are already closing out each night of the Dot to Dot series in May, while also headlining Leicestershire’s 110 Above alongside fellow headliners-in-waiting, Black Honey. Slaves, meanwhile, are hurtling towards headliner status themselves, and they top the bill at this year’s 2000trees, turning their attention to smaller festivals after rapturous sets on the main stages of Reading & Leeds last summer. Mac DeMarco is closing out one night of September’s End of the Road, his biggest festival slot in the UK to date, while Samuel T. Herring and Future Islands graduate to top slot at this year’s Green Man, as James Blake did last year. There are set to be some pretty formative nights ahead this summer, then, and we wouldn’t suggest that you miss any of them. DIY

Comeback Haim, Arcade Fire and (fingers crossed!) Wolf Alice are likely to show off brand new songs on the summer’s biggest stages.

whole load of our faves are set to release highly anticipated new albums this year, and festival season is an opportunity to get sneak peeks at new material. Lorde is set to showcase more of her already announced second album ‘Melodrama’, while excitement for Haim’s return this summer is at breaking point - especially after the sisters cancelled last summer’s festival spots to continue work on their second album. With Danielle, Alana and Este also heading to Reading & Leeds and Glastonbury among others, the promise of new material is irresistible. Arcade Fire’s Mavis Staples-featuring single ‘I Give You Power’ might give little indication as to their latest direction, but the band’s headline slots at a slew of festivals this summer should give more of a clue. The Vaccines, meanwhile, with a handful of topbilled appearances across the summer, have long been beavering away on the follow-up to 2015’s ‘English Graffiti’. As if that wasn’t enough, Foals and Wolf Alice could also potentially use festival season to road test material from their respective new albums, the latter’s follow-up to 2015’s ‘My Love Is Cool’ being worked on as we type in LA. About a year ago, they played new song ‘Yuk Foo’ while on tour in the US, and if it’s anything go on, we’re beside ourselves. All in all, then, basically all our faves are coming back with new albums this year. DIY

Spanish Sahara In Spain They might not be all over the shop like last year’s headline run, but Foals can still be found in a few festival hotspots.

hen Wolf Alice crashed their way through ‘Lisbon’ at last year’s NOS Alive in the city, it was quite a moment. There’s something about a song travelling to its namesake. Just like with all of Tony Christie’s gigs in Amarillo. This July, Foals are bringing ‘Spanish Sahara’ to Mad Cool in Madrid. With that proposed hiatus binned off too, we might even get a sneak peek at some new material. Alongside a show at the Eden Sessions in Cornwall, the band’s only UK festival this summer falls at Citadel in London’s Victoria Park, a set that sees the Oxford quintet sitting pretty in the position they’ve been destined to occupy for years now - headliners. If last year’s devastating closing slot at Reading is anything to go by, the show is set to cement Foals as one of the country’s biggest bands for years to come. You’d be a fool to miss it. DIY

ven one listen to Lorde’s comeback single ‘Green Light’ made it clear it’s a song to ignite crowds across the globe - a soundtrack for cider-drenched memories that’ll last long into the winter months. The song saw Ella Yelich-O’Connor take the dark pop of debut album ‘Pure Heroine’ and replace it with neon-tinged, heartbreak-fuelled euphoria. Even before any music was released from second album ‘Melodrama’, it was pretty clear that 2017, and its festival season to be precise, was going to be Lorde’s, but ‘Green Light’ and its epic ballad of a follow-up, ‘Liability’, point at something altogether more diverse from ‘Melodrama’, an album that looks worthy of commanding the slots Lorde holds at some of 2017’s biggest festivals. Beginning with huge sets at Coachella and across the US before touching down in sunny Somerset for what’s set to be a year-defining Glastonbury appearance, this festival season could well be defined by her return. By the time Glasto rolls around, ‘Melodrama’ will have been in the world for almost a month.

Plenty enough time for its tracks to become anthems, we’d wager. Lorde’s summer rolls on into July with a slew of European festivals including Roskilde and Rock Werchter, and though she’s yet to announce a single headline show to preview ‘Melodrama’, a sunset slot at Glastonbury looks set to be where the record finds its home. With huge headline shows sure to follow into the Autumn, 2017 is a year in which Lorde will inevitably triumph. The first chance to glimpse ‘Melodrama’ in the flesh will be at the year’s festivals though, and who’d want to pass up the chance to see the world’s next biggest pop star at the first opportunity? harlotte Church - Wales’ very own Patron Saint of Cheeky Vimtos - has come a long way. These days she’s worlds away from the operatic-lunged child who used to belt out ‘Pie Jesu’ on Songs of Praise, having traversed a winding path comprising of: four really-very-excellent alternative indie EPs, a telly chat show, a stint in pantomime, and her Imperial ‘Crazy Chick’ Pop Era along the way. That said, nothing on this sweet earth could possibly prepare anybody for the out of body experience that is Charlotte Church’s Late Night Pop Dungeon. Every bit as brilliantly barmy as that crackers name suggests, said Pop Dungeon consists of a cape-wearing Chazza and her glitterclad entourage emerging from rainbow mist in a super-dramatic burst of soprano opera, before barrelling into a whistle-stop tour

through everything from Nine Inch Nails to some of the Noughties’ finest pop moments. And, before you ask, OF COURSE she plays ‘Crazy Chick’. Last summer Chazza C trialled the Pop Dungeon at Glastonbury, and came close to collapsing the festival’s Rabbit Hole stage; such was the majesty of her take on Basement Jaxx’s ‘Romeo’. Quite rightly, she’s taking her latest creation everywhere this year, and you’d be a ‘Lovefool’ to miss it. And yes, she covers that one too, Cardigans fans. DIY

There’s little that can fully prepare you for The Pop Dungeon, dear readers - you’re best walking into the experience with an open mind, and vast quantities of booze. That said, here’s a taster of what treats to expect.

AMERIE - ‘1 THING’ Everyone who didn’t spend 2005 living in a cave probably remembers this gigantically horny (as in trumpets!) summer anthem - so it’s hardly a surprise to see The Pop Dungeon paying homage to the greatest.

DEEE-LITE. - ‘GROOVE IS IN THE HEART’ This 90s dance smash isn’t instantly a song you’d associate with political activism, sure, but on Charlotte’s watch, that all changes. “No ifs, no buts, no public sector cuts!” she chants in her own middle-finger slinging version, before seamlessly gliding into a flawless rap about social inequality. Well bloody played.

NINE INCH NAILS CLOSER In one of the set’s biggest curveballs, Charlotte Church - who, let’s remember, titled her debut album ‘Voice of an Angel’ - takes on this positively filthy number, to gravelling effect. Maybe don’t tell your nan about that time you saw her favourite child star yowling “I want to fuck you like an animal” at a tent of pingered-up festival attendees.

Leave Right Now (AND GO SEE THESE POP LEGENDS) Let’s talk candidly here, readers. Will Young, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, All Saints et al are to the 00s what The Velvet Underground were to the 60s - aka. absolutely iconic. Between the lot of them, they boast more bangers than your average hot dog stand. It seems like fate itself that this holy trinity have all chosen this summer to reunite, then; all three of them with plans to regenerate like pop phoenixes at a newly relocated second edition of The Mighty Hoopla. Taking place in London’s Victoria Park on 4th June, the whole bonanza has LGBT institutions like The Glory and Sink the Pink at the helm. Be there, or be forever regretful.

Actual snooker ledge Steve Davis has formed a second career for himself as a DJ, and with pal Kavus Torabi he’ll be spinning anything from prog, to psych and minimal techno at Festival No. 6 (7th - 10th September). New York’s Governor’s Ball (2nd - 4th June) are yet to confirm exactly what Mark Ronson vs Kevin Parker is, but given Mark’s solo sets last year had him behind a mixer, it’s either a battle of the bangers or a revival of Celebrity Boxing. And that would just be weird. Slaves will be taking over the decks at Bestival (7th - 10th September), while Isaac’s dad (!) will soundtrack the band’s Pier Party at The Great Escape (18th - 20th May), alongside Ellie Rowsell. Mumford & Sons aren’t just headlining Latitude, they’re bringing along a whole heap of their faves, as the band’s Ben Lovett explains to Will Richards.

ver the past five years, Mumford & Sons have brought their Gentlemen of the Road stopovers to all corners of the globe, headlining one-day festivals filled with their favourite acts. This July, they’re taking it one further. In the middle of a 2017 filled with writing album four and touring with U2 (natch), they’re taking over the Saturday of Latitude with the biggest Gentlemen... event yet.

“Latitude is going to be an all-day party for us, we can’t wait! All four of us have spent so long picking our favourite new acts to come and share the day with us, and it’s so brilliant to be in a position to do this,” the band’s Ben Lovett explains. The takeover is an opportunity for Mumford & Sons to big up bands they’ve taken out as support on tour, and also just some personal new favourites.

Also bringing along collaborators Baaba Maal and The Very Best, the Saturday of Latitude is set to bring together everything that’s soundtracked Mumford & Sons’ lives of late, before the world-beaters finish the night off. “It’s something we’ve been thinking about for so long, and I can’t wait until it’s here,” concludes Ben. “See you at the bar!” DIY

Jack Garratt will headline the BBC Music Stage, after supporting the band on their huge 2015 UK tour. This helping hand is something Mumford & Sons received back in 2009. “The Maccabees invited us to support them on their UK tour almost ten years ago, and at that time it was such a big thing for us to be able to be exposed to such a bigger audience. For us to be able to give this opportunity to bands now is a brilliant thing.” For Ben personally, the Gentlemen of the Road takeover at Latitude is particularly special, as it sees acts who have passed through his own venue, Omeara in London, graduating to their biggest stages yet. In the past six months alone, the likes of Jorja Smith, Maggie Rogers, and Declan McKenna (who played our own Class of 2017 launch party at the venue in December) have all played hugely hyped, sold-out shows there, and are now racing on to even bigger things. For Mumford & Sons themselves, their Latitude headline slot comes in the middle of a year that’s relatively quiet for the band, while they work on new material. “We’ve been writing a whole bunch, and it’ll be nice to get back out there, especially at such a special event.” Latitude comes after a series of gigs supporting U2 on their 30th

The day marks the first time Latitude has given a band free reign to pick bands for the line up. Another example of the Suffolk bash giving back to bands who have grown alongside the festival, Mumfords having played huge, year-defining sets at multiple Latitudes on their path to the domination that is now the norm for Ben and co.

What’s the deal? Fresh off the Dirty Hit tour on which they toured alongside labelmates Superfood and fellow awesome newbies Pale Waves, these equally freshfaced west Londoners have riffs aplenty, throwing out potential garage rock superhits as if they’re yesterday’s fish ’n chip paper. What’s the deal? 100mph Think: Time-travelling 70s fuzz-rock with more than a few punks (without the spittle) geographical references to their channelling Palma Violets’ Geordie home in their song titles. New youthful abandon. EP ‘Immortal Kombat’ (see what they did there?) has them stepping up yet another notch, sounding even fresher than a pasty from Greggs (see what we did there?). Oh, and they taught the southerners at DIY HQ the word ‘radge’. Legends. Think: Ant and Dec having a scrap with Chezza Cole, through a shit load of pedals.

A north London duo with more brooding synth-pop than you can chuck half a paper cup of warm lager at, Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville not long ago unleashed stellar debut EP ‘Gut Me Like An Animal’, on which pop pal Shura takes on production duties for ‘Does She Even Know’. Think: SOHN with more sportswear and less dodgy headgear.

What’s the deal? Matching dour skip-a-long rhythms with singer Clottie Cream’s ennui-laced vocal (she makes certified king of nonchalance Julian Casablancas sound like a sugar-doused toddler at a birthday party), Goat Girl’s debut double-A side ‘Country Sleaze’ / ‘Scum’ was nothing short of a smasher. They more than match it live, too their Hello 2017 set at The Old Blue Last was one of the most talked about. Think: MTV’s cult cartoon queen Daria forming a band.

What’s the deal? These Londoners’ might be peddling what at first glance seems bangertastic pop, all minimal beats and sugarysweet vocals - but don’t be fooled: Ellie Kamio might sound butter-wouldn’t-melt, but Sälen’s dark side is very much there in the lyrics (and videos which are worth a watch, too). Think: A Chupa Chups lollipop with a sour centre.

While a bunch of Class Of 2017 grads are set to shine this year, it’s also a time for some more seasoned alumni to come to the fore and put themselves forward as headliners of the future. If you’re looking to play a spot of Class Of bingo, then you’ll get a full house in no time by heading to one of the UK’s smaller festivals, including Oxfordshire’s Truck, Derbyshire’s Y Not, LeeFest and Blissfields. There you’ll be able to catch the likes of VANT, who’ll probably be found bringing down the tent with the riotous riffs and politicised lyrics of blistering, anthemic debut ‘Dumb Blood.’ After embedding themselves firmly into the circuit last year, Hinds are also continuing their path to world domination – you won’t want to

leave them alone. Fresh from touring with The 1975, The Japanese House has no doubt become accustomed to completely captivating huge crowds. If it’s sweat-soaked mayhem you’re after though, then keep your eyes peeled for Rat Boy; he’ll be calling for a ‘Revolution’ at Parklife, Reading & Leeds and more. Formation’s stratospheric, percussion-heavy tunes have always sounded festival-ready so they’re more than set to deliver some arms-aloft moments, but if it’s a bit cold and damp then The Magic Gang will warm your cockles with their irresistible melodies. Black Honey are known for putting on a spectacle, bringing their cinematic tunes to life during their powerful live shows, and with the Brighton bunch packing a serious punch with their latest single, it might be difficult to find ‘Somebody Better’ this year. WAKING UP

In Glasto Pop queen Katy Perry’s Pilton-bound in what’s guaranteed to be the most talked-about set of the weekend. Some people might’ve been a little surprised at the announcement of a certain pop ledge for Glastonbury, but think it through a bit and it all makes sense. If there’s anyone prepared for the mud, mayhem, and miscellaneous hazardry of the world’s biggest festival, it’s Katy Perry. A couple of years ago, her shimmering golden promotional ‘PRISM’ bus was notoriously dented by a drunk driver, and fast-forwarding to ‘Chained to the Rhythm’’s debut live performance, one of the dancing houses toppled off the stage. She took it all in her stride. With all this experience in mind, navigating Worthy Farm should be a doddle. It’d be handy if Katy bought a Land Rover along, a la Adele, mind you. Upon confirming the news, K-Pez expressed a great deal of excitement around the ample supply of crumpets and tea available at the British festival, which might give a few insights into her potential stage dressing. Known for celebrating cakes in the past, who’s to say Katy Perry won’t craft an entire set based around the humble crumpet emerging dramatically out of the buttery depths for ‘Dark Horse’, ‘Roar’ and ‘I Kissed A Girl’ - this time around? LESS MUST-SEE, MORE

Must-Sing Get nostalgic with your old faves.

t is a truth universally acknowledged that a person on their way to a festival must be in want of a singalong. There comes a point in time when you want to take a deep breath, hold it in restless anticipation of the first notes of a bona fide classic, and then proceed to sing at the top of your voice until your lungs give out. And boy, does this year promise to deliver. After a broken leg (ahem) stood in the way of them headlining Glastonbury in 2015, Foo Fighters are making up for lost time. As such, they’ll definitely have to ‘Learn to Fly,’ and you’ll need to brush up on their many, many anthems. If you’ve got the time to listen to them whine, pop punk pioneers Green Day are headlining BST Hyde Park this year, where a cathartic round of ‘American Idiot’ won’t go amiss. Kings of Leon are joining them there, and are off around the continent too. Don’t pretend like you won’t raise your arms aloft during ‘Sex On Fire.’ Speaking of ‘killer’ choruses, don’t forget The Killers. ‘Mr. Brightside.’ Need we say more? It’s not all about guys and guitars though. Dizzee Rascal is hitting up Wild Life and Bestival, so you better ‘Fix Up Look Sharp’ and brush up on his bangers. So, pack your throat sweets, remember your breathing techniques and get ready for a summer of chanting along to some of your faves’ most iconic tunes. DIY

If you thought the wait for ‘Blonde’ was painful, it’s going to be nine months since the album came out before he brings the new songs to life on tour, and a further one on top of that before he touches down in the UK. As was the case with the ‘channel ORANGE’ follow-up though, these shows are sure to be more than worth the wait, with Chris Breaux stepping into the festival-headlining shoes he’s made his over the past five years by doing... well, very little actually. Few would argue that he doesn’t deserve such adoration though, and with UK shows at Parklife and Lovebox joined by a slew of European mainland festivals, the likes of ‘Pink + White’ and newie ‘Chanel’ are set to join ‘Pyramids’ et al as anthems to define these muddy weekends. hile Charli XCX may have her ‘Angels’ and Lady Gaga her ‘Little Monsters’, in the indie world, there are few artists with as loyal a tribe of fans as Mac DeMarco. Since the Canadian broke through with second album ‘2’ in 2012, his uniquely charming mix of doe-eyed crooning and goofball japes has landed him an increasingly large and adoring group of acolytes (Little Macs, perhaps?). And tonight, rounding off a brief trip to the UK with a last minute, super sweaty, super sold out show at revamped Holloway boozer Nambucca, the Little Macs are out in full force. One fan has even flown all the way over from Italy - sans

“I’m already pissed off at the size rooms we’re playing now!” ticket - in the hope that someone will take pity and let him in. Mac does. Others shout out proclamations of love to Mac’s absent mother Agnes as he plays. Everyone here is universal in their word for word knowledge of the DeMarco back catalogue. Though most artists will profess their love

for these kind of intimate gigs - while secretly balking at the prospect of having to slum it back in a 2x2m dressing room - this is clearly the kind of shit Mac lives for. Rewind 30 hours, however, and, sat in a coffee shop a few miles down the road, he’s talking about the complete opposite: namely that this year, with forthcoming third album ‘This Old Dog’ in tow, the unassuming star will make the leap to festival headliner status, topping the bill at End of the Road alongside Father John Misty. It’s a big deal. The kind of deal that most artists would wait a lifetime for, but Mac… well, to be honest, Mac didn’t even realise it was happening. “We’re headlining?!,” he asks, sipping a black coffee and looking surprised. “I didn’t know that, but that’s really cool.” A laid-back reaction, perhaps, but big crowds and statement performances aren’t really the singer’s thing. He enthusiastically bigs up his friends who run the event, their hospitality and the tenacious British festival mentality (“People go to it knowing it’s going to be so muddy and fucked but they don’t give a damn. They’re together, they’re getting covered in mud and they’re gonna have a good time. That’s so sick,” he enthuses), but as for being the big star at the top of the tree? He could take it or leave it. “Fuck that,” Mac states. “I’m already pissed off at the size rooms we’re playing now!” he laughs when questioned about the very realistic possibility of soon becoming the kind of act that could casually whip out a 10k capacity Alexandra Palace show on his next live trip. “I love playing to all those people,” he adds, “but even when I haven’t put anything out in a year, I come back and the venue is twice the size regardless,” Mac continues, visibly baffled by his own success. “I’m like, ‘I’m not even doing anything to make this happen?!’ It’s very weird.” From the fart jokes and dopey humour that litters his onstage chat, to the familiar way in which he introduces girlfriend Keira to the Nambucca crowd, Mac is the kind of anti-star that despite (or perhaps because of) his unawareness, the world has taken to its heart. On last album ‘Another One’, final track ‘My 32

House by the Water’ signed off by stating Mac’s address and telling people to come over and stop round for a coffee. A bold move. In the two years between the album’s 2014 release and his recent move to LA, more than 3,000 people took him up on the offer, coming by for a glimpse of the man himself or even just to sit on his porch while he was frequently on tour. It wasn’t necessarily the reason for his relocation per se, but it’s clear it didn’t hurt in terms of spurring him on. “I don’t regret it, it was a cool idea and we never had any problems. Everyone was nice. But regardless of whether or not I thought it was ok, my roommates and my girlfriend weren’t so pleased...” he admits. Last year, however, he took the plunge, left New York and bought a place in LA. Following a slight creative wobble it meant that, for the first time, there was a dislocation between writing the songs that would form the record and putting them to tape. “I wrote about 12 or 14 songs in a week and a half in New York in March of 2016, and as I was going to start making the record, I was like ‘Ah, I just don’t feel like doing this for some reason,’” he ponders. “I’d already done a couple of records in that bedroom, I wasn’t vibing and I couldn’t focus,” he explains. ”So we went back out on tour for most of the summer, then we moved and it took a couple more months to get settled. In November I had to start thinking about it again, but it’s weird coming back to songs. I’d rerecord them and try and make them into this big thing, and then I’d listen back to it and think it was so stupid. So [in the end] most of the tracks were just the original demos, because they felt the most right or the most real.” The result is the singer’s most stripped back and intimate album yet. Recorded largely on acoustic guitar, it finds one of indie’s most naturally romantic raconteurs pinning his heart ever firmer to his sleeve. From the title track, a lilting, softlyplucked ode to the continuing endurance of love, to 80-second interlude ‘Sister’ – a “sweet little ‘I Love You’ to my ‘sis” - ‘This Old Dog’ is tender to the core. “On [debut EP] ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightclub’ I tried to write more in character, but I’m writing

But which famous hounds are the finest, according to our pal Mac?

Scooby-Doo “A talking dog to start us off. That show was on all of the time when I was a kid. You know when you stay home from school and there’s one show that’s always on and it makes you feel like you’re in limbo? That’s Scooby Doo for me. He’s got a weird little crew, has Scooby-Doo.”

Balto “There’s a statue of him in Central Park, New York City. He’s this dog that had one of those medicine jugs on his neck - this little barrel where he would transport medicine to people in Alaska. I think it was a true story. They made a Disney movie about him.”

Snoopy “Last but not least, we’ll go with one of the best dogs out there: Snoopy. You’ve got to love a dog that makes his owner look like a complete failure. Charlie Brown looks like a total butthead in comparison. I love the whole Peanuts crew - Woodstock, Snoopy, whatever. But he’s the best part of Peanuts - the rest of it is pretty confusing and psychological for kids but he’s just cool, flying his kites and going into his dog house.”

these songs as a reflection,” he explains. “When I’m at home it’s the only time I have to think about my life and the way I’m feeling, and all I can really write about is myself. I don’t really know much about anything else,” he shrugs. It all ends on the warped, woozy and heart-wrenchingly affective ‘Watching Him Fade Away’: easily the rawest thing Mac’s penned to date. “My dad got really sick this year. I don’t really know the guy very well and that song was my ‘see you later’. But somehow he got better, which was... That was very strange,” he admits. “I thought he’d probably never hear these songs, and that was my way of coping with it, but now he’s probably gonna hear all of them. Maybe it’ll make him smarten up. We’ll see. It’s a bizarre situation for me to be in now.” Would he have included them had he known he’d be in this position now? He pauses. “I’m not sure, I’m really not sure...” See, while DeMarco might be best known as the lol-a-minute comedy guy, famed for early gigs where he used to regularly get his penis out on stage, Mac IRL is a more measured character than you might expect. Clad in trademark grubby baseball cap and nondescript jacket, he’s prone to breaking into accents and dishing up cartoony character ‘bits’ but, for the most part, he’s a pretty calm

With the party and the show and seeing a new city, sometimes the music part takes the backseat,” he concedes. “Whereas now it feels like it’s right back at the front.” The view from the front, however, might be a little different from what you’d expect. It may have something to do with the intense, two-day press junket he’s been on since landing in the UK, but you get the sense that the singer’s veering towards a more, dare we say it... mature path in general? “I hope not!” he balks, at the mention of the ‘M’ word, but then concedes that “the allure of some things [we did] when we started has gone.” “I love touring and I love playing shows, but I don’t wanna sit and drink 40 beers every night and fall asleep face down on the floor anymore,” he shrugs. “For some reason, that lost its fun.”

Still only aged 26, Mac’s lived the majority of his adult life on the road, in a position where “it’s your job” to be a professional party monster. Give a 21-year-old the keys to the kingdom – or at least the booze cupboard – and it’s to be expected that they’ll indulge. But three studio albums (plus a couple of

‘This Old Dog’ this month sees Mac finishing up his current record deal with Captured Tracks. While not implying he’ll leave the homestead, it’s clear at least that he sees the record as closing a certain chapter of his career. “This record, ‘Salad Days’ and ‘2’ feel like a nice little trifecta. This is the last record I have on contract with my record label, so it feels like the end of a lot of things. I’m not saying I’m gonna become an EDM DJ or anything, but I feel like I can go wherever I want from here,” he says. “The funny thing about making this record is that [it’s shown me that] electric guitar is not really where I’m at right now at all. I listen to some acoustic music, but I listen to a lot of lyric-less or even ambient music – a lot of Japanese synthesiser stuff and video game music from when I was a kid. I’m not saying I’m gonna go down that path either, but it feels like there’s this thing here that’s been completed, so now I can do

something that truly feels different to me.” As the poster boy for a certain strain of plaid shirted, slapstick slackerdom, the idea of Mac ditching the strings and soundtracking Mariokart 2k18 might strike fear into the hearts of many. Then again, those Mac-olytes will come round; whether crooning lovelorn refrains or dishing up J-Pop-indebted nuggets, the man at the middle will still be the same guy who’ll invite you round for a coffee. “I remember when I was a kid, I could never really get into any contemporary bands at the time because they just felt too out of reach and too cool,” Mac says. “So, for me, the whole thing is that people should be involved,” he says, grinning that famously gap-toothed grin. “I’m just trying to keep it real and keep happy in myself. If it keeps going this way then great, if things crash and burn then that’s also fine. At the moment, it feels like I’m walking into the abyss. It’s a confusing time... but it’s cool.” Laid back as ever, Mac’s stepping into the next stage of his career with the same easy going attitude that he steps onto every stage with. That casual festival headline set? It’ll probably be cool, too. He’s decided to leave his new address off this record, though. It’s one small step for Mac, but maybe that’s enough maturity for now. “Tom is channelling a Coachella look, which is more minimal with a bit more flesh on show as he’s working on his tan. We’re dealing with a sassy, maybe slightly drug-enhanced femme fatale here who’s drinking a whisky mix from a hip flask in a bag that’s matching her outfit. As you can see, we’ve gone heavy on the holographics with a little matching back pack and choker, and some really nice cheek glitter. He’s got a shredded pair of hot pants and he’s currently bare foot because he’s partied so hard in the spiritual tent that he’s lost his shoes. He has no need for them any more because he’s found his inner Coachella babe. If I was a bird, I’d be a magpie and I’d just collect all of the things that were holographic and make a space ship out of all the things I found. Tom’s got a 90s space vibe, and the double hair bun adds a another element. That’s a little bit Harajuku, the buns – a harajuku futurismo vibe. And of course he’s sporting a #freethenipple slogan because he’s representing for girls everywhere.”

“A traditional Stevie Nicks Glastonbury look. We’ve gone heavy on the tassels, heavy on the gold and there’s a peace sign on his cheek and flowers on his floppy hat. We’ve really gone all out with vintage Glastonbury style here, with a really garish flower print. It’s a throwback look, this one. I think that if you were to pack for Glastonbury, your bag – it’s a camel pouch bag FYI, to keep on trend - should be filled with a vial of very strong rum, and then the rest of it is filled with overweight chrome accessories and tassels. No need for underwear, no need for wet wipes, just bring tassels.”

Tommy “Tommy is harnessing his inner rock goddess, sporting a classic look of acid wash hot pants, corset, 90s Slipknot T-shirt and an Axl Rose headband. I wanted to go a bit Axl Rose, a bit Courtney Love. She’s a good time girl at the festival. She gives zero fucks. She’s had a lot to drink and been up all night watching Korn, but she’s also into Thin Lizzy and something a bit more classic. The boa is a bit more of a glam reference – I think that end of the 70s is coming back in this season. That’s where she’s at. A good old rock T-shirt never goes out of style.”

Izzy’s tips: “For a festival, my number one priority is to not wear any trousers that go near the mud. I would also not recommend wearing flip flops. I think it’s all about leather jackets and some heavy wearing Dr. Martens that will keep you from the mud while still looking glamorous. Layering textures with band T-shirts and acid wash. Festival attire should be as eccentric as possible. Channel your inner diva, as it’s a really good opportunity to reach your eccentric climax. Don’t give a fuck what other people think and be your true self.”

From returning to Reading & Leeds, to taking a weekend off to Glastonbury and chill, Bastille’s Dan Smith is on for a busy summer. Words: Emma Swann. Photos: Mike Massaro.

he Raconteurs, Manu Chao, Amy Winehouse, Jay Z.” Bastille frontman Dan Smith is reeling off the Pyramid Stage run at one of his first visits to Glastonbury, in 2008. “My mates and I wanted to be at the front for Jay Z, so we went down and hung out around the front, and by the time Jay was on, we were lung-crushed, up against the barrier. He came out, strumming along to ‘Wonderwall’, middle fingers up in the air, and absolutely killed it. A really fucking fun two hours of my life. “It was a set of undeniably massive hits, but it also felt so important, seeing in a big shift in people’s mentalities when it came to what kind of artist should and can headline festivals.” He is, he tells us, on the band’s tour bus, somewhere between New York City and Uncasville, Connecticut (“Er, it’s in America, if that narrows it down?”), just a couple of weeks ahead of US super-festival Coachella. It’s there he’s looking forward to watching another hip hop giant (“Kendrick in a fucking polo field in the desert?! It’s gonna be pretty surreal.”), someone who also provided another of his stand-out festival memories. “We were right at the back,” he remembers, of Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 Reading Main Stage appearance, sandwiched directly between the twin indie behemoths of Jamie T and The Libertines. “My housemate’s in a band called Childcare, and he was playing on the BBC Introducing stage. I hadn’t articulated it, but I remember wondering what the crowd will be like, in a field in Reading. And moving towards the stage, as Kendrick started playing, I was so blown away. It was by far the busiest set, in my opinion, of the whole weekend. Everybody was singing along, and I was like, ‘this is fucking amazing’. Here’s an artist who made, obviously an incredibly important album, but also a really challenging one - ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ is not an easy listen, in a lot of ways, and that’s

what makes it so great - but to see a massive field of British people shouting along. If you’d have suggested this would’ve been a Reading & Leeds moment however many years ago…”

f it’s not clear by now, Dan - and the rest of Bastille, he’s quick to add - loves festivals. He’s cleared a weekend in his jam-packed 2017 diary to attend Glastonbury, just to “go hang out and watch a shitload of music.” “I’m like a kid in a candy store…” he pauses, before correcting himself. “Shit, that’s such an American expression! A kid in a fucking sweet shop!” “We try and get in as early as possible,” he continues, of his band’s on-site antics, “find out who’s playing, and try and see as much as we can. Sometimes sets coincide with us playing, and that’s a pain in the arse.” They can’t, he ruefully points out, see Eminem at this year’s Reading & Leeds, because he’s on opposite days. “I’d chew my hands off to see him play.” There are, at least, a few others, he can catch this summer. “Future Islands! I really wanna see Lorde, and Lana Del Rey. Radiohead are playing a whole bunch of festivals that we’re doing and that’s going to be very, very exciting. Also Haim! I am so excited about their new record, I can’t wait to hear it.” Katy Perry at Glastonbury? “Oh mate, that’s gonna be fucking amazing, can you imagine what it’s gonna be like, having THAT many people screaming along to ‘Firework’?! It’s gonna be insane!”

2017, meanwhile, has them returning to Reading & Leeds, a series of appearances across Mainland Europe - Pukkelpop, Lowlands, Northside and Rock am Ring - and a curious slot at the Isle of Wight Festival. “We play before Rod Stewart,” Dan laughs, at the hilarity of performing directly before the nation’s grans’ favourite. So obviously, we ask, what’s his favourite song from the crooner’s extensive back catalogue? “Maggie May! Maggie May is a tune.” DIY

s anyone who’s had a small emotional breakdown halfway across the Glastonbury carpark trying to drag a stove, camping chairs and the kitchen sink to their tent half a mile away will attest, packing your festival gear is a particular kind of science. Go too minimal and you’re stuck buying £9 cocktails from a man in a ruff named Tarquin every time you want to elevate the booze buzz; go too maximal and you’ll have broken yourself before you’ve even begun. Connoisseurs of the festie survival kit, Superfood have spent their fair share of time in the countryside summer battle ground and know exactly how to play it. We took them for a supermarket dash so they could impart years of learned wisdom into one handy shopping list. You can thank us later.

D: Rum and ginger beer tastes really good when it’s warm and flat. It’s the perfect festival drink. Take some limes as well, it stops the scurvy.

D: We need to go to the booze section first. You normally have maybe like £100 to spend on stuff to take with you if everyone chips in £20, so the majority of that needs to go on booze. Some supermarkets do an amazing Sangria in a box that’s perfect for festivals cos it’s like drinking squash. If not, you need a bottle of mixer to make a brew in, which is half a 2l bottle of vodka filled with juice that you swig from all day.

R: Loads of beers. You always have dirty ones left in the tent at the end of the weekend, when you’re packing up to leave and you find them all dented and dirty and scratched. You always buy too many cans and regret it, but I’m getting more anyway.

D: You always buy something stupid to take, food-wise. Someone gets a pack of cheese or something, some really smelly blue stilton. You moan at them for bringing it, and then by day two you ask for a bit. That’s your stinky mate Steve, who always brings pate to a festival.

R: Take some Febreeze with you. I’ve never done this but I might now. Steve’s a bit stinky but he’s sensible as well. R: If you’re gonna eat at a festival then it’s all about instant noodles. In they go. Someone’s always got a kettle, one of the lovely old people who’ve been to Glastonbury for the last 20 years.

R: I always take a few mangoes. I just tear them open, primate style. You don’t need a knife. That’s your fruit intake for the weekend.

D: I’m taking this lawn feed cos I want to be nice to Michael Eavis. After you’ve done your weekend then you just give it a sprinkle over where your tent’s been and you’ll help save the farm so we can go back next year.

D: I’m actually thinking of buying these waders for festivals this year. You can spill everything down them and then just wipe it off. You can wade through the mud. They’ve got pockets as well.

I’d be chuffed if I went to a festival with this stuff. I feel very prepared.

Between performing in their PJs at Glastonbury, to all-nighters in Germany with Bright Eyes, Warpaint’s resident drum-basher Stella Mozgawa spills all. Interview: Emma Snook. You’re playing Glastonbury this year! What does the festival mean to you? We’ve played it twice before and I would say my first reaction to it was absolute terror ‘cause I’d never seen a festival ground that was so vast and populated. It just felt like trouble. But that first year was really fun, we actually got to stay for a few days. Unfortunately last time we played - in 2014 - we were whisked away to catch a ferry a few hours after our set and that was really sad. I think the same thing’s happening this year as well. I think for me Glastonbury is about missed opportunities. I think for most people it’s an abundance of opportunities… perhaps too many! Do you have any particularly fond memories from your first Glastonbury? I remember walking around the campsite in my wellies with Jen (bandmate Jenny Lee Lindberg) and we were pointing and laughing at people’s miserable tents and just the misery of “Is… that a… selfie stick, Theresa?”

“We played the John Peel stage at 5pm and I was still in my pyjamas.” - Stella Mozgawa the situation. It was really entertaining at the time. We had a really early press interview and I just did it in my pyjamas and I didn’t get out of my pyjamas for the rest of the day. We played the John Peel stage at like 5pm that evening and I was still in my pyjamas. I guess I was pretty hungover and couldn’t really be arsed getting changed and the general Warpaint aesthetic at that time was pretty comfortable. But I can’t pull it off as well as Jen can! How well do Warpaint cope with the mud? Pretty good. There seems a pattern of: confusion, acceptance… like the five stages of grieving, except there’s a long, extended period of humour in there as well. Levity, I think. But we’re always pretty well-equipped, thanks to our British managers and label. They know what’s up. We just kinda

turn up like, “Ohhh sneakers no?! OK.” Isn’t it once every four years they take a year off where they have to excavate the bodies and the money from the mud? Full excavation. You’re a band who are well used to the festival circuit. Do you have your festival packing down now? Are there any essential items? I’ve got better at it I think. Water and protection from the elements generally. And a tiny backpack! I do love tiny backpacks. Big fan of the tiny backpack. I think it’s coming back in fashion which is great for me because I’ve got about seven of them. There are a lot of things that can go a bit pear-shaped at a festival, like the weather, getting lost, alcohol-related mishaps… have you had any especially bad moments? The one that comes to mind is a festival in Germany. We’d just met the Bright Eyes crew, we were doing the same festival circuit. We were both playing the same festival the next day so some of them just stayed on our bus and we stayed up all night. We arrived at the festival five minutes to showtime which is a big no-no. It was really, really stressful, especially for our tour manager at the time. We found a way to park the bus really close to the stage and literally rolled out of bed onto the stage. At the time it seemed like fun but looking back it was just wildly unprofessional! We have never done that again and we will never do it again.

Are there any acts you’d like to see step up to the headline slot? I think The xx should just headline everything. I think they just bring the most joy, the most complexity, the most heartbreak, the most positivity and honesty. I think they’re the most important pop band at the moment and I think they should be exalted as much as possible. I’m just about to see their new show for the first time at Coachella so I’m really excited about that. Legends! Who else are you hoping to catch this festival season? There are a lot of people who I haven’t seen play who I would like to see play. I’ve not seen Floating Points. We are seeing him or them in some capacity at Coachella. Shura, who I did a remix for a few years ago, she’s playing Coachella and a few other festivals we’re doing so I’m excited to see her show. I really want to see Frank Ocean and I’m really excited to see New Order, I’ve never seen them. DIY

I’ve got to say I think it’s wellies. I wore a pair of black winkle pickers to my first festival thinking I’d be alright. I ended up having to ditch them as the mud took them from my feet. Have you ever had to choose between watching an act everyone else wants to see, or one of your favourites? Do you go it alone? I once ended up having to go watch Die Antwoord by myself as everyone else was interested in some house DJ pushing pills at the rave tent. The reasoning was simple - I hate house music and it’s Die fucking Antwoord so I’m going to watch Die Antwoord. I ended up bumping into (bandmate) Haydn’s little sister at the front of the gig who was having a whale of a time.

Are there any festivals in particular that you’re really looking forward to playing this year? I’m really excited to go back to the smaller ones that we did two or three years ago. We’re headlining a few of them and that feels really cool. Last year we didn’t do that many, but we did big ones, whereas this year we’re doing a load of little ones and independent ones and to be honest I think I prefer that. They’re the festivals that we owe it to, we won a lot of our fans round at festivals like that. I love the smaller stages and the smaller crowds are usually way more rowdy and way more fun. We’re going back to Poland as well, which will be really good, we’re going back to Russia also and I’m not entirely sure, but I think we might be going back to Ukraine. Russia and Ukraine when we went before was mind-blowing, we didn’t have any idea that people knew who we were there and the reception was just insane with sold out shows and stuff, so that’ll be really fun. Norway as well, because I’ve never been! Was the aim to try and go to as many different places as possible this year? I think it’s just kind of happened that way. It’s very exciting really, it means we’re getting even further afield into countries we didn’t even know were aware of us. I never thought that I’d ever go to Norway and if anything, it’s an amazing opportunity to travel and see new places, I count myself very lucky. Are there any festival pipe-dreams left for Slaves? I’d quite like to do Lollapalooza and some of those massive American ones, but not really to be honest, I feel like everything that we’ve ticked off has kinda been like a big dream. We never really had any big ambitions to play any big festivals, it kinda just happened and then when it did it was amazing. Will you do anything special for the headline set shows? Yeah, I’m well excited about them ones and yeah it’s pretty sweet! I dunno, maybe some fancy dress. Do you approach shows differently dependent on what billing you’ve received? No, I don’t think so, I like to think we stick to our guns and don’t really change for anyone. You take it or leave it.

Don’t Forget Your Passport! Everyone loves going on holiday. Everyone loves festivals. So why not combine the two?! We asked a bunch of our faves to spill about the fests closest to home.

ICELAND AIRWAVES 1st - 5th November Reykjavík, Iceland

Rakel Mjöll, Dream Wife Tell us about your first Iceland Airwaves experience. I was 16 and I sneaked in. It was the most exhilarating, fun weekend I had ever had up until that point besides my family’s Disneyland trips. I remember running around all the different venues with my friends, feeling faint when I bumped into the bands on the street and feeling like there was a new adventure behind every corner - and there usually was. Also the walks in between the concerts were some of my favourite moments too. Me and some friends would dress in outrageous outfits to catch the eyes of fashion bloggers coming to the festival, it was during that period where everyone seemed to be a fashion blogger, and then after the festival we’d see who was the winner and had been most stopped. How much of a party is Iceland Airwaves? Do we need to book the next week off work? It’s a big party spread out across the whole city. There’s the ‘on venue’ concerts but then there are free off venue concerts happening everywhere in the most random places, like a barber shop or a swimming pool. It’s similar to SXSW but smaller and colder. Warm hearts like Texas though. How integral is the festival for the Icelandic music calendar? It’s very important for the Icelandic music scene. Dream Wife played the festival for the first time last year and it was beneficial to us but also it meant a lot for me to bring my London band to Reykjavík and show it to my island people. It’s raw and fun. Also, start your day by going to the geothermal pools in the city - it gives you energy for the day. When we’re looking out the window at Iceland Airwaves, what do we see? It’s Reykjavík. Downtown Reykjavík. Worth a Google I’d say. Recommend us an Icelandic band, please! There’s so much music that comes out from our island. There’s a joke that every other person in Reykjavík is in a band, but it’s sort of true. There’s a lot of good hip hop acts these days. My faves from that scene are Cyber and Fever Dream - amazingly talented women. And a new band called HATARI that combine performance art, death metal and pop. Love it.

Noah Gersh, Halvard Skeie Wiencke, Sløtface Would you recommend running around Øya while chanting “oggy oggy oggy, Øya Øya Øya!” No, I wouldn’t really recommend it, but if that’s your thing, go for it. Also you could probably get some funny reactions. Do you have any personal experiences with the cork plates they have at the festival? Well, only Lasse (Lokøy, Sløtface bassist) has tried eating them once and apparently they don’t taste too good. But we think it’s a really cool idea, go the environment! Which Norwegian food staple do you recommend people try if they’re over for the first time? If it’s your first time at Øya you should definitely try some Norwegian fish dishes. And maybe some flatbread - not super exciting food, but pretty cool to have tried. You can take one luxury item with you to a festival. What do you take and why? Deodorant. Festivals tend to get smelly and deodorant is seriously a necessity after four days of sweat and beer. Partybaby What was your first impression the first time you walked through the entrance of Coachella? My Pops brought me to the first one they ever did. It was the year Beck was touring ‘Midnight Vultures’. The memory most burned in there was the first time I saw two people having sex with my own eyes. On the ground, no blanket, dreadlocks, pre-Kardashians going to Coachella style. What is the best way to sneak a drink out of the designated areas to go watch bands? I mean, confidence is the way you get anywhere you’re not supposed to be. Just have no doubt in your mind or vibe that you’re going to be stopped. But the real question is, why not just slam the drink down every time you’re presented with the problem? What’s the best set you’ve ever seen at the festival? So many come to mind. The first time I ever took ecstasy, I saw Björk and cried ‘cause of how beautiful it was. Daft Punk premiering the Alive show. The first time I played, Roger Waters did ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ which was amazing. Tell us one insider tip that anyone going to the festival for the first time should know. Don’t buy pills from kids in the Sahara tent and never trust somebody in a flower crown. Riddle me this: Rihanna had a very famous song called ‘Umbrella’. Coachella rhymes with Umbrella. But if the festival Coachella was a functional accessory, what would it be? A Neti-Pot (a weird ‘nasal irrigation’ device - Ed).

As you may have spotted in this issue, some of your favourite new bands are part of a brand new scheme titled ETEP - the European Talent Exchange Programme. Not too unlike those school exchange programmes that always pop up on telly, ETEP is designed to - here’s the official part - help “support the cross border success of European artists with the potential to tour outside their own countries.” Basically, it’s all about getting new acts to play on different stages across the world, no matter where they come from. And it works! To fill you in on just how helpful ETEP can be for festival bookers, we spoke to Lowlands Festival organiser Eric van Eerdenburg to give us the lowdown on just how much an impact ETEP has made to their booking process.

What sort of experience do you want the fans to have when they visit Lowlands? I want them to feel good. I want them to see the best music in every style, from a debuting level to main stages. I want them to open up their heads for new music and other disciplines in culture. When they go home they should have seen a lot that’s surprised them. Lowlands also stages dance, theatre, literature, art, film, and workshops. It should compete with a city trip to New York, Paris, Berlin or London and win. How important is it to have new bands appearing across your lineups? Do you think it’s a key platform for up and coming artists? Very important. The Lowlands audience is a curious audience. We must be at the forefront of new developments in music to satisfy that curiosity and will to explore. Bands that play in a club for 150 people play in front of 2000 or 3000. When they do well the word will spread. Next time they come to Holland they’ll play in more or bigger clubs. How has ETEP helped you to choose which new bands you think will work at Lowlands? Is it a useful tool for the booking process? Before ETEP it was like there were only good bands from UK or USA and an exceptional band from somewhere else. In the meantime, you saw good bands from Holland that should, but don’t break through in other countries in Europe and you’d realise there must be more. We always had a network through Europe

and booked bands from agents other than those in the UK and US, but ETEP has helped break that monopoly. UK and US agents now check the ETEP bands and try to get get them in their roster or book their new talent into the ETEP showcase events. So yes, it has been pushing the market into other directions and it’s given a platform to new music that otherwise would have been unseen. Which new bands are you most excited to see this summer, and who are you keeping your eye on for next year? A couple of Dutch acts to keep an eye on are WEVAL and Klangstof. I’m also looking forward to the HAUS show at Lowlands. I saw them at the Eurosonic ETEP showcase - I think they’re a brilliant band. And Zebra Katz, I’ve heard they are fantastic live.
