To say the lack of Glastonbury in this year’s festival season leaves a bit of a gap in our calendars would be one mighty understatement. Still, from the inner-city parks hosting new events, to the metric ton of weekend-long parties across mainland Europe vying for your musicloving attention, there’s more than enough to whet the appetite in 2018. This year’s cover feature follows George Ezra on his voyage into album two, while we hear from Shame’s inter-continental takeover, Wolf Alice guide us away from festival disaster, IDLES advise on moshpit etiquette and Rae Morris answers a whole bunch of your questions. Then there’s Declan McKenna on door hinges, obviously. Lukewarm pints in soggy fields, here we go!

Back from the brink, and finally stepping into headliner shoes at Finsbury Park event Community, Alex Trimble ponders debut album birthdays, and triumphant returns. Words: El Hunt.

an you believe it - Two Door Cinema Club’s debut ‘Tourist History’ turns eight years old this year. Eight! By the time children are eight years old, they’re capable of joining local football teams and playing fairly accomplished solos on the recorder, for goodness sake; translate that to musical terms, and having an eight-year-old debut is a sure sign of a veteran band who top festival line-ups without breaking a sweat. And yet, for Two Door Cinema Club, things didn’t quite go so smoothly. Whirled around the world, playing tour after tour off the back of both that first outing and second album ‘Beacon’, these headliners-inwaiting found themselves burned out and on the brink, just weeks before they planned to top the bill at Latitude 2014. In the end, the trio were forced to pull out of the coveted slot, and Two Door more or less disappeared. Now, though, Alex Trimble and pals are firmly back. Third album - 2016’s ‘Gameshow’ - took the band back to the upper echelons of Latitude as special guests, and this summer, those richly-deserved headline slots finally await them. Promising a celebration of that joyful debut, nods back to ‘Beacon’, the fizz of ‘Gameshow’, and (whisper it) a couple of glimpses towards future material too, Two Door Cinema Club have never seemed more confident as a unit. In part, they were spurred on by the reception they received when they finally returned. “Something happened when we came back,” Alex ponders, looking back on his band’s return to the stage after three vital years away to recoup. “We weren’t sure how things were going to go, because we’d taken so long off. As far as music is concerned, and how fast the world is moving, especially nowadays, that’s a hell of a long time. We didn’t know if people were gonna care that we were playing shows again, or that we had new music,” he admits. “Putting those shows on was an exceptionally proud moment.”

"We’re there to entertain people." Alex Trimble Perhaps it’s because they’re from Bangor “maybe…” Alex concurs - but Two Door Cinema Club certainly don’t shy away from playing the *ahem* bangers, with shows celebrating every smasher from ‘What You Know’ right through to newer ‘Gameshow’ slice ‘Are We Ready? (Wreck)’. “We never really gave it a second thought,” he reasons. “We’re there to entertain people.” Looking ahead, the band are excited to share the bill with some mates - established and rising - at the likes of Community in London’s Finsbury Park. Seeing bands like Sundara Karma (who supported them on tour last year) rising up feels particularly special, he agrees. “They’re a band playing rock ‘n’ roll, with amazing songs,” he enthuses. “They’re these freaky guys that just want to be themselves, and it’s so fun watching that on stage, and watching that unfold. I’ve caught them a few times since and seeing how much they’ve progressed as a unit on stage the songs, at the end of the day are amazing - but to see people connecting with that as well, to have the opportunity to bring bands like that with us, we get to bring music we love to our fans. They form these new relationships with these bands, and it’s something that lasts. I

don’t think anything beats seeing a band on stage for the first time. If we hadn’t been afforded those opportunities, I don’t know where we’d be today,” he concludes.

And as for that eight-year-old debut of theirs, “it is a strange feeling,” Alex agrees. “I’ve never really felt like I’ve got the hang of doing this, and so in many ways it feels like I haven’t been doing this for very long. But the band formed over ten years ago!” he remarks. “It’s not something we’ll give much thought to, but we’ll meet fans after shows and it’ll take us by surprise. We’ll meet these

kids in their early twenties telling us that they got our album when they were 12 or 13!” he adds. “That’s mindblowing to think about. We were pretty much just fresh out of sixth form when we were putting that record together, and in many respects it feels like a lifetime ago.”

An all-new event that takes place in London’s Victoria Park across two weekends, All Points East boasts probably one of the summer’s strongest bills. From the first weekend - a three-day festival headlined by The xx, LCD Soundsystem and Björk with added Lorde, Beck, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Phoenix among others - to the one-offs with Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds and The National among others, set those compasses eastward. At The Disco, Wolf Alice, The Horrors, Skepta, Creeper, Pale Waves, The Magic Gang, Dream Wife, Dua Lipa, The Vaccines et al will actually be stealing a horse’s playground for the weekend.

Ever wondered how a real life working farm turns into a festival and back again in a week? So did we. Barn on the Farm’s Joshua Sanger fills us in. How did you start hosting the festival? I’d just woken from the best dream. I was running a music festival and my family, friends & favourite artists were all there. So I decided to make it a reality. I booked a line-up, 60 people turned up for the best party on a farm you’ve ever seen. We ALMOST broke even. Not the greatest business plan but fuck it, I didn’t care. We didn’t have a clue what we were doing, that was the charm of this thing, it was faulty as hell, it should never work but it bloody did!

How do you prepare for hosting the festival? The number one priority is having the longest checklist you can think imaginable. I walk around the farm writing a crazy number of tasks down, and then spend the next month trying to tick them all off. Some of the jobs range from building pallet walls to moving ostriches, to putting up carpet in a roof in a barn to help with sound. The farm itself is a working farm so it’s not as straightforward as being able to do everything at once. Often we can only do things in certain fields once they’ve been bailed or much closer to the time as they’re being used to grow crops. So there is a bit of a science to it. How long does the land take to recover from hosting the festival? We’re extremely lucky to have a lot of hard standing tracks. Without those, it’d take forever. The areas that struggle the most are entrance and exits into camping fields. We’ve been blessed with mostly sunshine the past couple of years so fingers crossed for the same again!

It’s a welcome return to the city centre for this one, after spending years in the (relative) wilderness that was the Liverpool docklands. Taking over venues including Camp and Furnace, Constellations and the Great Baltic Warehouse, they’re playing host to acts new and slightly older: headliners Peace are joined by IDLES, Black Honey, Superorganism, Jaws and more. We’ll also be hosting a stage - head to Constellations on 6th May for Sorry, King Nun, ALASKALASKA and more.

17th - 19th May ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• With more new bands than it’s possible to shake a sweet, sweet stick of rock at, The Great Escape is the home of all things buzz in the UK, with artists already confirmed to appear including Class of 2018 alumni Pale Waves, Goat Girl and Her’s, plus Neu favourites Bodega, Japanese Breakfast and Brooke Bentham. Plus - keep an eye out for the DIY stage - guaranteed fun times!

Hello, King Nun. We take it you’re raring to go as far as this year’s festivals are concerned? We are! We’re far more knowing of what it is we need to communicate as people at this time in our lives and know what to expect this time around. What was your favourite festival to play last year? Reading & Leeds felt huge to us. We had memories there, as kids we wanted nothing but to play stages like the ones we played. We felt really grateful to be able to be there as performers. Our favourite sets, however, are tied between The Great Escape and Latitude. We had luck and feeling on our side for both those shows. Any particularly memorable sets? One time we were playing to this audience who were kind of sheepish and quite far away from the stage. The closest person to us was this guy leaning over the barrier below us, who immediately after every song would loudly request the next one. To be clear, it wasn’t enthusiasm this guy was voicing, he was smiling, but something told me he might shoot me if I made the wrong move. The first time, we laughed because we thought he was joking, but after a while it became clear he was serious and in a hurry or had gone Andy Kaufman deep cover for the sake of the gag. We finish the next song, some applause spatters round the room, “NEXT”. I tried to joke with the crowd about it but they all seemed really nervous, they wouldn’t back me up on this one so I decided to get

on with it. The guy locked eyes with me and clearly elaborated that he would like us to play the next song. That’s when I realised, Hannibal Lecter is real, he’s an impatient music fan who goes to gigs and truly believes he can control the bands he sees like an iPod. I ended up adhering to this guy’s loud and obnoxious requests without question. And that must have looked bizzare from the audience’s perspective. Maybe they thought he was some big shot manager or something. Other than that happening I actually thought we played pretty well. You’re playing a fair few citybased festivals. What are the best things about avoiding fields / tents and whatnot? lf you’re in a city you can find cheap food and drink. It won’t be good food but it won’t cost (literally not kidding i’m actually seriously literally serious) one thousand pounds for one crisp and a peanut on a skewer. I suppose you’re less likely to get robbed if you’re staying in a hotel too. We get it. There are only so many soggy evenings you can spend ankledeep in mud before wishing your festival experience had a little more… sunshine? As any holiday-maker worth their salt knows, Spain and Portugal have bucketloads of the stuff - and thankfully, some pretty legendary festivals on their shores to boot.

Barcelona’s Primavera Sound (30th May - 3rd June) is probably the jewel in the Iberian crown, with bucketloads of us Brits heading to Parc del Forum every year to bring in the summer with a varied bill that this year includes Arctic Monkeys, Chvrches, Lorde, Haim, Björk and The National. They’ve also got a sister event over in Porto - NOS Primavera Sound (7th 9th June) hosts many of the acts playing its sibling, including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Father John Misty, Four Tet, Fever Ray and Superorganism.

Not to be outdone, if you like your festivals at the top of a mountain, Bilbao’s BBK Live (12th - 14th July) delivers, as the Basque city - and its kalimotxo (a heady concoction of red wine and CocaCola, no less) welcomes Gorillaz, The xx, alt-J, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Jungle and Young Fathers.

The Fantastic Mr George Packing his bags and heading out on trip after trip to craft new album ‘Staying At Tamara’s’, George Ezra has returned with a record overflowing with personality, providing the kind of escapism we all need right now. Words: Will Richards. Photos: Phil Smithies.

meant I then ended up staying no more than one night in each town,” he giggles. The answer for album two, then? George packed his bags, and headed for Barcelona.

t’s never been this way before, shut down by anxiety,” George Ezra sings on his new album ‘Staying At Tamara’s’. “You better get away, boy.”

Strife and hardship aren’t what immediately

come to mind when thinking about the music of the 24-year-old, whose debut ‘Wanted On Voyage’ remains a brilliantly breezy first effort, served up with the cheesiest of grins, but it was something he had to contend with when touring for the record came to an end. “At the end of the last record, I wasn’t in a good place,” he opens up, only seconds after grinning while raving about the perks of his GoOutdoors discount card as we send him off camping for our cover shoot. “I didn’t have the vocabulary to identify what was up, just subconsciously aware that something wasn’t right.” After the extreme learning curve that was becoming a star at breakneck pace and touring ‘Wanted On Voyage’ back and forth across the globe for two years, it was his return to the quiet, (relatively) normal life that proved the hardest.

“A

t the end of [the ‘Wanted On Voyage’ tour], I did not wanna fucking travel ever again,” he says, a slight grimace appearing on his face, remembering flight upon flight. “I wanted to go somewhere and stay there.” Pitching up at a stranger’s apartment he found on the internet - owner Tamara going on to provide LP2 with its title - a pretty idyllic month followed. “I was just walking around the city, taking it all in, and filling up a notebook,” he remarks, still every inch the wide-eyed adventurer that missed that train to Hungary. “Every day I’d go up to the Montjuïc, a big hill in the city, and just sit there and drink shitloads of Lemon Fanta! It was the best! The closest thing I can liken it to is being a student again. It’s a city I didn’t really know, where people didn’t know me, and there were zero commitments.”

“I’m no good at being creative in my comfort zone,” he expands. “Teaching myself to relax was brilliant. And instead of getting myself a hotel or apartment, I thought I’d go and essentially live with this stranger. At worst, it’s someone who shows me where the bed is and leaves me to it. At best, it’s someone who helps me settle in and gives me advice on where to go. There were records everywhere; her boyfriend was in a band; all her friends were creatives. They were fucking cool. That’s cool wherever you’re from, but in Barcelona! You’re cool!”

“On the first record, everything was new. Every city I went to, every experience of radio or an interview, all of it was new. I wasn’t used to it, even at the end really. You know how when there’s a newborn baby,” he poses, “and you see it once every two, three months, and it’s learnt a whole new set of skills in that time? That’s how it felt constantly. After a sobering yet restorative period of being back in his native Hertford, waiting for friends and family to finish their 9-to-5s and plodding through weeks based around Friday nights at the pub and Sunday roasts, the urge to travel came trickling back to him. ‘Wanted On Voyage’ was forged from a trip George took around Europe, spending every ttwo nights in a new city - punctuated by the well-travelled story of him missing a train to Budapest while debilitatingly hungover, and gaining a number one hit out of it - and then, as success started coming his way, the travelling continued in earnest for a good few more years. “[The touring]

Tamara’s’, but its message has been getting a little lost in translation, as Our Geoff explains.

“I was doing promo in France recently, and it turns out they do not understand what riding shotgun is. Every journalist I spoke to was like ‘So you say you feel like a someone when you’re carrying a shotgun - what does that mean?’ and I had to massively backpedal and say ‘WOOOOOAH no no no!’ to every single one of them! ‘It’s about road trips and the beach, not guns!’”

Other trips followed, including a getaway to a cabin built on a farm in Norfolk, where George amped up the writers’ retreat cliche level to the max, reading in bed via a head torch, getting (maybe a little too) close to nature with some bracing outdoor showers, and working by candlelight. “If there was a chart of the most important trips [to write the album], that would be right behind Barcelona,” he states. “It was beauuutiful! It was the height of British summer. I was making fires outside every night, I had a battery powered radio,” he continues, evidently embracing the isolation and back-to-basics nature of the trip without an ounce of pretence. “10 days, no electricity, just standing outside having a shower, looking out onto this field like ‘Wahey!’” he smirks, waving his arms up and down manically. “Just hoping there wasn’t a longlens camera hiding in the distance!” A slightly bleaker, rain-soaked voyage to the Isle Of Skye followed, George getting a tugboat over to the island from the fishing village of Mallaig, and staying with an elderly couple, one of which was an oil

painter. The other used to tour with The Kinks, obviously. It’s almost too barmy to believe, but these situations seem to follow George Ezra around like a yappy dog, and he’s only too happy to embrace it. As well as providing material for notebook after notebook, it also gave the singer the escapism he craved, and it’s something that seeps into every part of the album.

taying At Tamara’s’ begins with ‘Pretty Shining People’, a track that embodies the album’s themes in one early swoop. “There’s a few things about that song,” George begins. “Firstly, I love that the record starts with just a guitar. It could go anywhere at that point. And then, essentially, the first bit of the song that I wrote was the pre-chorus,” he continues, before racing through the refrain of “Why why why what a terrible time to be alive, if you’re prone to overthinking”. “That’s probably the darkest lyric on the record. It’s not a nice lyric. I said to myself, ‘If you’re gonna sing that, you have to follow it up with the absolute antidote. You need to feel confident in singing something extremely upbeat after that.’” So then the chorus kicks in: “Hey pretty smiling people, we’re alright together.”

Though the record does indeed delve into the flipside of many people’s perceptions of George Ezra - a musician that exists so sunny side up - that aforementioned antidote is always waiting to thrust you out of the slumber. “If you’re going through dark times and writing dark music, when do you escape?” he adds, and from then on, ‘Staying At Tamara’s’ provides a gorgeous daydream Single ‘Paradise’ is a wide-eyed ode to untamed romance; dreaming of that insatiable blossoming of a new relationship, and sunburnt all-inclusives

to Benidorm, while ‘Get Away’ turns its sorrow into power via a bright, instantly catchy chorus. The highlight, though, is ‘Shotgun’. A cheeky recounting of lazing on beaches and racing away on road trip after road trip, windows down, it’s escapism personified. It also finally allowed George to utilise the “bikini bottoms / lager tops” lyric he’s had in his back pocket since his teens, desperate to fit it into a song at any opportunity. “It’s cheeky, that lyric. You can only get away with it with a smile on your face,” he grins, It’s this consistent knowing wink and deft self-awareness that sets him apart from the hordes of British male singersongwriters he could be (and has been) compared to. While the music he makes could easily confine him to the ears of mums and dads and Radio 2, it’s George himself that provides the charismatic base for these songs to exist on, aware of all his cheesiest moments and prepared to embrace them wholeheartedly. “Every time I step on stage I try to be cool,” he laughs. “I want to be cool. And then every night, two songs in I’m grinning ear to ear. ‘Oh you’ve done it again George!’” he quips, one of many occasions where he talks back to himself, like he’s trying to forcibly detach Real Life George from Pop Star George. Thankfully, they’re inextricably tied. “I realise that for some bands, it works so well for them to have a moody act. I love that, and as fans you want that - you want a po-face, and a real attitude - but for me, I soon realised that that’s not the situation I’m in. I’m in a better place if I can just be myself. I’ve never said anything I don’t stand by, and I don’t approach conversation differently between people I know and don’t know. Nothing can come back and bite you in the arse if you’re honest. If you’re completely honest with yourself, and you don’t get on with someone, that’s fine! Whereas if you’ve gone in with a pretence, or an idea of who you want them to think you are, you can blame it on something, and not just let it be.” Tearing up the traits of what a solo male singing love songs with a guitar should be (though he did go and write his album in a cabin, granted), George Ezra is a thoroughly modern pop star, fiercely up on his pop culture, and really fucking good at Twitter. “My favourite one at the moment is Camila Cabello,” he offers, before breaking into an actually-not-that-bad rendition of ‘Havana’. “I just love pop culture. I don’t care if you’re singing woe-is-me folk songs, but you should also know about

What Would Geoff Do?

We’re big fans of G-Ezra’s alter-ego Geoff here at DIY. As such, we came up with some well-known festival dilemmas and asked a simple question: what would Geoff do? Geoff’s best friend passes out from a few too many ciders, but Geoff’s favourite band are about to play the main stage - what would Geoff do? I’d roll them over into the foetal position somewhere safe, in the shade and near a flag or something so I could find them again, then go and see the band, and just come back and hope they’re ok. Geoff accidentally spends all his money on the Wednesday night - how does he survive the rest of the weekend? This rings very true with my first festival experience. You go to Reading Festival as a rite of passage when you’re 16. I’d spent all my money on baked beans and cider, and realised I only had £20, and my Dad just sent ‘Tough!’. Sleeping in a tent and just eating dinky dogs in baked beans all weekend. He’d make the most of a bad situation. Geoff doesn’t have a ticket for Glastonbury, but he wings a lift down to the site anyway. He finds himself outside the gates and is desperate to get in - what would Geoff do? Right! First of all, a disclaimer: if you haven’t got a ticket, don’t try and come in! But, hi-vis is an answer! No-one ever questions someone in a hi-vis! Emily and Michael, if you ever read this, I’m not a villain, I promise! But yeah, a hi-vis is a key to any city.

That’s a really important album from the last 10 years.” “Anyone that’s above the age of, whatever, 30 or 40,” he continues, “they’ll always say ‘music was best in [insert year here]’ and without fail it’s when they were a teenager. Yeah mate of course it was, you didn’t have a job, you didn’t have bills to pay - music was just a soundtrack to you getting fucked up, and your introduction to being active in so many ways. And that’s still so true for people of that age now. Come on, man.”

It’s back to one night in each city for a few years for George, but he leaves behind an album so sure in its message that it can help anyone get away for an hour, free of consequence or second thought. Wolf Alice’s Guide To Averting Festival Disaster

Festivals are strange places. In the unique bubble of the summer weekender – a hedonistic playground where reality is temporarily put on pause and it’s socially acceptable for a warm can of cider to be your first liquid of the day – literally anything can happen, even to the most prepared of boy scouts. So in order to help you, dear readers, navigate the potential minefield of Summer 2018, we enlisted Wolf Alice bassist Theo Ellis to, ahem, theo-rise on how best to avoid imminent festie disaster. Situation

You’ve drank all your booze and spent all your money on the first day. How do you proceed? “If you’re going to Reading and Leeds or TRNSMT festival, or even a more boutique thing like End of the Road, then you can invest your time before attending those events in a guerilla distillery course. You can learn how to distill booze from various bits of your surroundings, so if you’ve got no money but your friend’s brought many potatoes with him, you can set up a small moonshine house inside one of your tents and begin to create your own type of booze. Then you can even maybe sell it by calling it artisanal and make more money than you actually paid for the festival. I have never made my own alcohol, but I did used to make The Incredible Hulk when I was younger, which is all the different Bacardi Breezer colours in one. It goes green and tastes like Tangfastics.”

You’re in the middle of the pit having a big one to Fall Out Boy and you suddenly get the immediate need to vomit. What do you do? “Mate, just exorcise those demons. Get into the middle of the pit where there’s a bit of space, purge yourself, gather your thoughts and rise up like a phoenix, floating away on a sea of people to ‘Sugar We’re Goin Down’. Done.”

You’re about to go on stage for your big moment and you do yourself an injury. Will the show go on?? “It’s all dependant on where the slicing has occurred and the severity of it. If I’ve lopped my hand off, I won’t be able to do it. I will have to, for the second time, call up John from Gengahr and get him to fly in on the Gengahr-copter which they definitely don’t have. If it’s anything aside from chopped off hands though, I say just grin and bear it.”

You’ve lost your phone and you can’t remember where you’ve pitched your tent. Now what? “I wouldn’t worry about it, go with the flow and watch a band. Glastonbury’s a different story because it’s so big it’s a fucking nightmare, but maybe you’ll find some friends that are better than the ones you came with? You’re gonna ruin your time if you panic about it for too long, you’re wasting precious escapist moments of your festival holiday, so just roll with the punches and drink someone else’s sack of wine.”

It’s the muddiest Glastonbury on record and you have only brought one pair of knackered Converse with you. How do you proceed? “Gaffa tape some bin bags to your legs and crack on. You’ll be alright unless you get trench foot. It happened in the war, so why can’t it happen now? Glastonbury’s an intense place. Last time we played, I was so fucked that I put my wellies on the wrong way round and convinced myself I’d taken two left feet. Walked around like that for about three hours.”

After a night drinking too many lager shandies, you have woken up totally naked with no backup clothing. What do you do, Theo?!?! “You’ll be alright if you’ve got some good friends who can do a loan. If not, then you’re going to have to turn yourself into a kind of festival jester-type character to attain some new friends and potentially get some clothes so you’re ready to watch Elbow later. I’ve woken up outside of tents before, but I’ve never woken up naked. I am going to almost say 100% that I’m not going to be naked at Reading in red camp this year. I’m still a massive twat but I’m too old for that now.”

You break a limb – a leg, perhaps - during the festival. What do you do? “I don’t want to condone anyone doing anything that will make them have a limb amputated, so just gauge it. Be responsible. Think about the future. Think about walking and what it means to you and whether you want to do it forever, or if Fall Out Boy headlining the Main Stage is worth dancing on that knackered ankle. I think we’re playing at the same time as them, so make your choice wisely.”

Rockin’ All Over The World In less than a year, searing South London tearaways Shame have gone from knocking around the toilet circuit to selling out shows all over the world. This summer, they’ll graduate to the next step, gracing Reading and Leeds’ main stage alongside a season of high profile festival sets that’ll cement their status as the most incendiary new live band on the block. We caught up with singer Charlie Steen and guitarist Sean Coyle-Smith midway through their run of packed-out SXSW shows to see where it all went right... Interview: Lisa Wright. Photos: Emma Swann.

Alright lads, how’s your SXSW going so far?

Sean: We’ve got four shows today and nine in total, so that’s going to be a slog. You just go into flight mode. Charlie: When we released our first proper single for ‘The Lick’ we did three gigs in one night in three different areas of London on this little tour bus. But this is a bit different. It’s our sixth week on tour. S: I’m convinced our booking agent is trying to kill us. Death by touring. C: We now live in a van. S: And that’s just been nicked. C: So now we’re homeless. We’ve just got shreds of our belongings left in mates’ houses over the country. Leaving a trail of misery. One long existential life crisis.

What’s been the most surreal moment of your travels so far?

C: We had to drive from Mesa to Texas which is 935 miles and on that drive we stopped off at this gas station with a saloon. We went inside and there’s this woman as hard as nails behind the bar who ended up putting our song ‘One Rizla’ on. They’re listening to Burt Reynolds’ latest film’s soundtrack, there’s Trump stickers and ones that say ‘Obamacare Makes Me Sick’ and I thought, I don’t know if our music is the right vibe. But she was like [puts on Texas drawl] ‘This is my bar, and I’ll do what I want’. There was a shotgun hanging above her head so I wasn’t going to argue. It got pretty weird.

Since the record’s come out, has everything felt like it’s escalated?

C: Last year, we did 150 gigs, 47 festivals and then when the album came out it was another moment of absurdity. We were on the front page of the Guardian, in the Top 40 charts; everything’s been a bit weird but we just fucked off as soon as the album came out for an eight week tour so we’re still yet to come back. It’s a massive relief, almost like an orgasm, for us to put out the album and have a body of work out. Now we just need to write a fucking second one.

Have you started writing for it yet?

C: I’ve got a good story actually about what we’re gonna call the latest song we wrote in Columbus. When we were in Kentucky touring with Protomartyr, we went to the shop to buy cigarettes and inside there’s a guy buying alcohol who’s blue. Like a Smurf. We head back and tell Protomartyr that we’ve just met this blue man and they lose their shit. They start telling us that he was one of the Blue Fugates of Kentucky. Basically, however long ago, two people were born with the rarest skin disease in the world where their skin was blue, and they met and had kids in Kentucky. It’s basically like seeing a unicorn. And we met one.

You’re gonna be on the Main Stage at Reading this year – that’s pretty big...

C: We’re gonna make sure we do that right. I think there’s a possibility of people believing that we’re not prepared to do a gig of that size and we just wanna make sure we completely destroy any preconceptions. But the festivals over this summer, we’re gonna make a lot nicer. We’re gonna take holidays in Sicily and just enjoy ourselves a bit more because last year was never-ending. S: This might be a summer season of luxury. But at Reading, you’ll play the Main Stage and still get a six-pack of Carling, two bottles of water and a pack of pork scratchings.

Are you taking it all a bit more seriously now?

S: We’ve definitely matured as people, doing this. It’s like moving out of home and moving into a travelling circus. When you meet a lot of bands who’ve been touring incessantly for years, they go one of two ways. Either they’re absolute caners and crash and burn, or they’re vegan and go to the gym every day. C: Or they do both, like Primal Scream to Primal Clean. There’s not much room for moderation; with touring it’s complete excess. You’re either in Montreal in a penthouse suite looking over the city with people you’ve just met, a fridge of beers and a jacuzzi, or you’re staring at a wall in a venue with no phone and no entertainment waiting for another motel bed shared with a bandmate you’ve known since you were eight. S: The more we tour and the more time spent together, we don’t argue with each other anymore though. We used to have a fair few punch ups back in the day... C: We understand now when to pick your battles. Am I gonna throw my bottle of beer at this person who I then have to share a bed with, or maybe I’ll just slap him tomorrow?

What’s been the peak show so far?

C: I don’t think there is a peak, because when you reach that then it’s probably only going to be downhill from there. But I think when we go to a place like LA or Sydney or Nashville and people are singing the words and know who we are, that’s a moment where it’s like, what the fuck is going on? But we’re still searching for our best show. We were touring with Wolf Alice and we asked them where do you go when you’ve sold out Alexandra Palace and they were like, “Yeah, we don’t know...’ S: They went and played some festivals in India. That’s when you know you’re making it. C: Let’s try and break Zimbabwe now... S: That’s a funny story actually. Wolf Alice were meant to play the same Indian festival the year before, they were about to go and the promoter faked his own death because they couldn’t get the money together to put on the festival. They get this email saying this bloke has died, and next year they get a call from the same bloke asking them to play the festival again. My thought was we just email everyone with tickets for the UK tour and say right, all those shows are cancelled, we’re now playing Alexandra Palace. Boom!

festival agony aunt Festival season can be tough, and you may find yourself in a number of sticky situations. Luckily, though, we’ve drafted in our festival agony aunt Rae Morris to offer sensible solutions to all your festival-related disasters. Interview: Will Richards. Photo: Phil Smithies.

What is your optimum level of booze to take in to your preferred festival? You don’t want too much, cos you’ve gotta lug it around. We’d always take a big crate of cider, and that’s always a solid starting point, using one of those trolleys. Then pre-mix gin and tonics to try and convince yourself you’re being a bit more mature. I mean, when I was 16 it was just anything I could get my hands on, but I’ve seen the light a bit more now. It’s late at night, you’re round the campfire and your mate inevitably gets the acoustic guitar out - how do you politely tell them to...well, stop? There is no polite way. Kick over the chair, get it over and done with. I actually have a story regarding this. There was one dude in our camp at Leeds Festival one year, and he was just being a bit annoying. This is... oh god, looking back this is really mean. The only way to get him to stop was - and I want to make it clear that no-one should ever do this - we set fire to a piece of cardboard underneath his chair and so he had to jump up or he’d have caught fire. Made him stop, at least. So the answer we’re going for is ‘Set fire to them’? ...

You’re watching your favourite band on the main stage and you realise you’re on the big screen what’s your play for your five seconds of fame? This is a nightmare of mine actually. I’d inevitably forget diy Festival guide 2018 • In association with

The idea of a shower is almost impossible at festivals - do you have an alternative showering top-tip? Everyone says baby wipes, but I’m not into it. I think embrace the dirt. My nana always says that we (‘the kids’) wash too much, so I’m more than happy to take her advice. It’s fine. Bathe in your own festival oils for a few days. I was at Leeds the year that poo girl happened. I was in the same camp. There was an air ambulance and fire truck and everything. As long as you’re not poo girl, then you’re not doing too badly.

Well then, moving on. At a festival, you meet someone and develop a bit of a festival romance - do you call them or not come Monday morning? Oooh god, this is a tough one. It depends what kind of experience it’s been. I think there’s something really romantic about running around a festival site together. If there’s been a sober connection too then get on the phone, but if it’s purely a drunken fling, super messy and just grabbed each other, then leave it. Quite a story for the grandkids though. ‘We met while watching My Chemical Roooomance at Reading two thousand and niiiiine!’.

the words just as my face is on screen and look like an idiot. Duck, I reckon. Get out of there. Disappear. Don’t point at the camera and scream. Don’t be that guy.

Here’s the big one - bumbags: yes or no? They’re such a thing now aren’t they? I was always a yes, but since they’ve become cool, it’s maybe a no now? They’re meant to be for dads and very uncool and cost £2 down the market but now it’s all bumbags across the chest and no t-shirt? No no.

Unfortunately, you’re in a portaloo and end up getting stuck inside with no phone on you - what’s your play? If you start banging on the side, it could tip over, which is #1 disaster. Poo and blue stuff all over you. Have a nap maybe? Finally, a bit of peace and quiet at the festival! Take the time to enjoy some rest.

And finally, an anecdote from an unnamed member of team DIY, who managed to fall down an actual, real life human shit hole. What do you do? Oh that’s the point that you have to have a shower. No more bathing in your own oils, I take it back. Find a shower at any cost. I rarely do it, but in that situation you have to. I actually had a shower once, at Glastonbury, just outside the Park Stage where I was playing. Maybe the only one I’ve had. It was in a portaloo. One minute I’m just going about my business, and the next I’m in a portaloo, naked, a few feet away from Rag’n’Bone Man!

Marmozets have enjoyed a lot of widespread support; you’re the sort of band that can play at a rock festival like Download, and on the flip-side, take on the complete opposite of Community. They have very different vibes. That must be cool for you? Yeah, I guess that’s how we’ve always wanted things to be for Marmozets. We want to be a band that can play any festival. It seems to be heading that way, so we must be doing something right!

As Download veterans, what’s a stand-out moment from that festival? When Slipknot played! That was incredible. It was pissing it down with rain and I just remember looking around and everyone just did not care because Slipknot were playing. Everyone did look a bit possessed, but that’s the way sometimes at festivals, innit? People just get way fucked up!

Did you go there when you were younger? I went in 2009, but I ended up going home on the Saturday night! I mainly go to Download and Glastonbury, actually, and love that camping experience. My Leeds experience was a bit crazy, I went on my own and tried to meet my friends, but it was an absolute mess. No organisation. You want everyone to be comfortable and warm, with enough money for food, y’know? But when I turned up there, they had already spent all their money, and I had to buy them all food. You don’t want to be buying all your mates noodles, do you? You just go, right, I’m off now, I’ve had enough.

If you were tasked with putting on a festival back in Yorkshire, who would you book? Obviously Marmozets can have one of the headline slots. Architects. That would be sick. While She Sleeps, Royal Blood, all the amazing English bands. We could keep it to Yorkshire, but then Sheffield’s got Bring Me the Horizon, Pulled Apart by Horses [from Leeds] and so many other bands up that way. So yeah, I’d keep it English. I don’t know why, I’m not being mean to all the other people. I’d have Yorkshire Tea represent it, and we can have [Timothy Taylor Brewery’s] Landlord ale as well, the finest ale.

What would you do if an actual marmoset got on Are you excited to play your second album ‘Knowing stage with you during a festival set? What You Know Now’ at festivals? They’re probably feisty little things. It would be running Ahh yeah! We’re on tour at everywhere. Hey Pale Waves! It’s almost festival season! Are you getting excited? We are! It’s gonna be so busy. We’re going back into the studio to finish off our debut album as soon as we get back from our US tour, and then it’ll be festival season! So we’re going to be in the studio in the weeks, and then out to festivals at the weekends. It’ll be a nice little break. It’s already looking like such a busy summer. Studio, festivals, studio, festivals, album out! Well at least there’s no Glastonbury this year! We met [Michael and Emily Eavis] recently actually! He took a really big liking to Ciara [Doran, drummer]. He just saw her and was like ‘I really love your makeup!’ and was really fascinated by her. And then every time we saw him again, he’d wave, like ‘Hiya!’ with a really big grin on his face. He asked her if we’d ever played Glastonbury before, and she said ‘No, but we really want to!’ and he just started stroking his chin and laughing. Ciara, always making connections! So, last summer was your first big summer of

festivals - are you feeling more comfortable going into this year? Kind of! They’re always really hectic - no comfortable soundcheck, just get on stage and play! It’s exciting though! I’m a control freak, so it worries me, but there’s something about festivals that’s so nice. Everyone just comes together. Were there any particular festivals last year that really stood out for you as highlights? Oh god, I’m trying to think back! Reading & Leeds were really cool. Reading especially was brilliant. It feels like we’re gonna be all over the place this summer, playing every festival going! It’s gonna be non-stop. Were festivals a big part of your childhood? I went to quite a few, but not as many as the other three [in the band]. It’s better as a band though; I’m not a camper. I need a shower. I don’t think I’d survive if I went to, say, Glastonbury and just didn’t shower. It’d suit a punk band’s image to get up on stage unwashed for a week, but not really ours!

Dungaree prince Declan McKenna tells us all about his favourite festival accessories. Interview: El Hunt. Photo: Phil Smithies. Declan, whenever we see you out and about you seem to be wearing dungarees. They’re the ideal festival outfit, aren’t they? You can just put all of your supplies in the pouch. Yeah, they’re very versatile, dungarees. A very versatile item of clothing, and essential to the festival experience. You can look really cool in them, and wear almost nothing underneath. Or, if it’s cold, you can wear tracksuit bottoms underneath, with three jumpers. You’re super warm, it locks in all the heat, and you can keep all your stuff - your phones and whatnot - safe. It’s definitely an underrated essential. The only flaw with dungarees is that, if you need to undo them for any reason, your belongings can tumble out of the pocket... That happens when I find myself at public urinals. You undo them, and your wallet falls on the floor when the bib falls down. Toilets can be awkward for that reason, but there’s ways around it. You could buy dungarees with a zip across the pocket! Yes, exactly! You can probably buy add-ons, dungaree upgrades. That’s a niche that needs to be explored.

The ones at Reading are bad in the camping area, because, well, normally, it’s just a big old vat of human waste and you can see it all, along with whatever people have dropped down there. I’ve seen a large amount of it on the walls, on the side. You don’t want to sit there.

A door without a door hinge is surely just a piece of wood? A piece of wood! Yes, that’s exactly what it is. And that’s why a door hinge is essential. If you’re going to a festival, I would bring at least six. If you need to reinstall a portaloo door, or make a wooden door for your tent, I’m sorry, but you’re going to need a door hinge.

This might end up like Glass Animals and the pineapple ban, Declan. Are you sure that’s ok? Well, I don’t want them thrown at me on stage! I’d like door hinges neatly placed. But thrown? Oh no.

Have you ever seen any festival toilets that haunted you?

You’re a big fan of door hinges. Why is that? Well, when it comes to the festival circuit, like we were saying, it’s all about versatility. And the door hinge can go anywhere. You can use it as art, whether in a tent or in your home - I value door hinges as art - but also, wherever the door may go, the door hinge is vastly important. What is a door without a door hinge? It gives me peace of mind knowing that wherever there is a door, there are two, maybe even three - as a general rule - door hinges. I’m looking at a couple of them right now. What is a door without a door hinge? It would just fall down.

Which door hinge supplier would you recommend in particular? Wickes. Wickes is good. On a festival site, though? I’ve seen very few door hinge merchants, so they are something that you will have to bring on site with you. I’m not sure how tolerant they are these days, but if you can get them in, it’s really important.

You’re playing Boardmasters. Will you be entering the surfing competition? I’ve been body boarding a few times. Does that count? I don’t know if they’ll be doing a kids body boarding competition, but I’m not bad at that. I did it a few times maybe seven years ago. I probably still have the knack. If there’s a junior’s competition, I’m in.

You first got ‘your break’ thanks to Glastonbury’s unsigned talent competition. You’ve played it every single year since. What are you going to do this year, since it’s not on? I think I’ll probably just keep chilling! Having a chill one! I’ll probably just take the weekend off as well! Cheers for that one Glastonbury. You’re off to Coachella. How are you going to cope in the heat? I do burn like a wet peach, so… I will really struggle out in the desert. I’m hoping we end up in a tent, but hopefully I can go for a dip. I’ll bring lots of ribena with me and hope it turns out ok. My mum will probably pack me off with lots of factor 50. You’ll have to watch out for those door hinges in the heat, as well. Yes, because they’ll get really hot! I don’t know whether the door hinge meme is bigger in America or the UK, but if it’s bigger over there, that’ll definitely be a problem come festival season. I’ll have to enforce a no door hinge in the area rule. But if people do want to bring one along, and hand it to me, keep it in a bag, keep it cool. Then I’ll be very happy to accept.

You’re old hands at festival headlining now, but can you remember the first time you headlined a major event and what the dressing room vibe was like before you went on? I know that we headlined Reading & Leeds. I’m trying to remember what it was like in the dressing room before we went on, but I honestly have no recollection. The memory of being on stage is intensely vivid though - people beyond what the eye can focus upon. All of them jumping in unison, a mass of human ocean pulled into a wave by the gravity of the beat. Beforehand? There was a portakabin, only one window would open and only slightly. Paul had recently become a father. A guy from Madness, the drummer I think, was hanging around and being a twat. There were robots, dancing robots, with spotlights for heads. Other than that it’s a bit vague.

exactly what the situation you are entering into is and it knows what chemicals it needs to release to your brain for you to cope. Once you accept that, you’re OK. What are some of the best headline sets you’ve seen from other people? Any that have inspired you in how you want to present your show?

Coachella, 2009. Leonard Cohen headlined one of the smaller stages. It was completely mesmerising. He played at such a low volume, it subverted the conventional perception of power. The power of sincerity and emotion over the power of decibels. That deep, deep voice - tar on a midsummer highway at sunset. Firm, but just enough give for you to feel like you had left your normal footing on earth. A master and his songs, [he was] so generous. That’s at the heart of a great performance: generosity, giving all. Giving from every deep crevice of the soul while embracing your vulnerability. All so effortless as well. A black swan gliding across a lake of enraptured faces in the California night.

What are the best ways of harnessing those nerves? Do you still get nervous now? Yes. If you don’t feel adrenaline flowing through your veins before you get up there, you probably shouldn’t get up at all. Nerves to me means a heightening of the senses. An acute sensitivity that you don’t require in

What’s been your favourite ever festival headline that you’ve played and what stood out about it? A very recent headlining set came into my mind: Kendal Calling in August last year. I’d never been to the festival before, so didn’t know what to expect. It’s a beautiful setting, a natural amphitheatre Booze: what’s the sweet spot you want to circled by centuries-old oak and sycamore. Anteros Hard at work on their debut album, Anteros unleash themselves on this year’s festival season with a great deal of fire in their bellies. Heading to Live At Leeds, TRNSMT, Bilbao BBK and beyond, come September they might just be your new favourite band. Are you itching to go for this year’s festival season? Laura Hayden (vocals): Yeeeah! I never think I will be, but by the time The Great Escape comes around, I’m always so ready to go. We’ve done it two years in a row. It is fun playing festivals, and you get to see so many of your mates. Harry Balazs (drums): There’s a really cool culture of just seeing everyone at the weekend. We’ve seemed to be lucky enough to get to play the festivals where everyone’s there at the same one. We feel very fortunate to be in that position. Laura: Seeing your mates, but in different cities!

Whenyoung The London-via-Dublin trio may still only have a handful of infectious tracks out in the world right now, but, as they prep to head out on their inaugural festival run this year, it’s clear that there’s no holding them back. Drummer Andrew Flood chats boiler suit survival and stand-out fest moments. You’ve got quite a few festivals scheduled for this summer you excited about getting out there and playing them?!

Oh my god yes! So many coming up, can’t wait! We have never played a festival in the UK before so bring on the summer!

What sort of prep do you think will go into those sets? Do you reckon they’ll be a bit of a different beast to your regular shows?

Well, the main thing to think about is how hot will a boiler suit be in summer. I might have to cut the sleeves off. It’ll be a totally different approach to our normal shows; we’re definitely going to play around with set lists to maximise the outdoor

vibes!

What are some of your favourite festival experiences from being a punter?

We got to see Van Morrison last year at Primavera which was quite special. He sang all the hits through his gold microphone. Kate Tempest also blew us away that weekend. The Strokes at Hyde Park a couple years ago was a childhood dream come true!

If someone was to stumble into the room (or field) halfway through one of your sets, what would you hope they’d take away from it all by the time you’d finished? An uplifting sense of empowerment... And some fashion tips.

Making her UK live debut back in January, it’s clear that power translates perfectly on stage, and with an album now in her back pocket, festival season is set to see her grow and grow. IDLES - Bristol’s premier benevolent punks - tell us how to have a big one whilst also, in the words of Jerry Springer, looking after yourself, and each other. Interview: Lisa Wright. Photo: Lindsay Melbourne. Hey Joe, can you remember the first time you got in the pit? I can’t remember the first one, I would have been shitfaced, but I can remember my favourite pit. It was at The Salo Apolo in Barcelona, watching Thee Oh Sees and it was like an entire room of movement in synchronicity and chaos at the same time. It was a beautiful thing. I lost about a stone in weight, which was good for me cos I’d been going heavy on the tapas. What is the beauty of the moshpit for you? It’s a feeling of catharsis and letting go. There are two ways of moshing. You either gently push - never put your whole weight into pushing because you get those fucking assholes at gigs who do that and they can fuck off - and you’re supposed to get aggressive, but in a way where it’s connective aggression. When you’re pushing a little bit but getting the same energy back, that’s called consent. The other way is when you don’t do anything, you just stand and let everyone push you. That’s what I do and I love that. It has to be a busy pit otherwise you’re just stood there looking like a weirdo, but in a busy pit, just put your arms down and let your weight carry you. People just throw you about, but they can see you’re not pushing back so you just get moved around and it feels really freeing. Do you feel responsibility as a band to make sure that the pit stays safe at your shows? We stopped a gig once because a guy was getting aggressive, but that was maybe five years ago. [Since then] I’ve never seen it where someone’s been overly aggressive at our shows. We are responsible for maintaining a safe place because we can see it all, so we’re like the lifeguards. But we’re also there to encourage people to enjoy themselves. I don’t often mosh, but when I do it’s because I want to get in that ocean and be carried. We’re definitely responsible but I haven’t had to step in for a long time because I think our message of love and compassion

is there throughout each song, we’re not like, ‘Yeah, fucking pints each other!’ We’re not Slipknot. If I ever saw anyone be aggressive without consent, I’d politely tell them to leave. There are some really important organisations like Girls Against that have started up recently to make sure people are safe at shows... As a feminist and a conscientious stand-stiller at gigs, I’d be happy to. It’s one of those causes where I can’t imagine anyone disagreeing with it unless they have that old macho view. I’ve never seen [anyone being groped] at our gigs. If I saw it, I’d be really devastated. We shouldn’t even be having this conversation in 2018. A fan of IDLES who’s a female or a male should be able to come and be naked and not feel like they’re sexually unsafe. That’s how it should be. Got any other mosh tips for us, Joe? The invaluable thing is just to treat everyone as you would wanna be treated, unless you hate yourself. Then get to the back.
