01 SPIRIT OF THE JOURNEY The reflection of the feeling of the journey in a staging post

Characteristic: Individual Work Location: Cinque Terra, Italy Winter 2016

The concept of the design derives from the feeling of a whole journey. The linear interior space symbols the process of the journey. At the beginning of the travel, people may need to do some preparations and the function room in concert with the first stage of the travel. It cannot be avoided that people may experience a hard time of the journey, but this stage is exactly the most unique and memorable part. Then, with the strong mind and devout spirit, travelers keep climbing over the third stage—we could see that the destination is very near and the condition becomes better than every previous day. Finally, people could attend the most bright and open space to enjoy the ultimate beauty of the journey. The design tries to express the feeling of the traveler through different spaces.

SITE The site is an imagninary landscape with reference to the Cliffs of Cinque Terra in Italy. Facing the vastness of the sea and the sky while standing as an anchor in the wuthering winds, the cliff makes a sense of tranquility, which recalls the spirit of the travelling. Besides, in order to have a closer engagement with nature, the form of the building performs as digging up a piece of land to the midair.

Stage 1 — Preparation

Stage 1

Preparation

The entrance of the staging post is beneath the ground level and the beginning part is covered by a pool of water. While the architecture is facing the sea, travelers could feel the surrounding water when they approach it. When people go downstairs, the view of the environment and architecture would vanish from the water level and it implies the change of position and the mood as well. The concrete wall is the element of nature and it also symbols the roughness and hardship of the journey.

Stage 2

Puzzle

After finishing the staircase part, travelers will arrive at an array of depolished glass maze. There is light diffused from the glass in the dark space. People would get puzzled and have a difficult time to find the access to the next interspace. The depolished glass make travelers see the obscure profile of others but cannot reach each other. The experience represents a hard time of the journey. People may get lost but as long as there is light, they could solve the problem and make the experience as a treasure.

Stage 3

Distortion

The upper staircase is around the twisted corner of the architecture. The underneath part and the suspended space are connected by the polished metal floor and roof. And the fantastic variation happens at the distorted corner. When travelers step on the stair, they will experience the change of position of the roof.

Stage 4

Extension

After the up and down in the journey, travelers would arrive at their destinations. It could be a beautiful scene or a relaxing resort. The same feeling can be unconstraint and carefree. So the wide and open view assisted by the floor and roof's reflection of sea and sky could fully liberate the tension of nerves and muscle as well.

02 RE-FORMING MILAN Renovation project in Via BORLETTI

Instructor: Prof. Youjia Wang Characteristic: Individual Work Location: Via Borletti, Milan Spring 2017

The project, located further outside of the city of Milan, appears as an abandoned building with either active outside area or the accessible interior space. The buildings on the surrounding blocks have the same height and the similar size which indicates that the renovation should respect the current condition in this area. The original building consists a factory with slope roof in the west and a five-story office building in the east. The renovation project is aimed at reforming the abandoned area in Milan by increasing the vitality of the whole block through reconstruction and redesign. The proposal of a multi-function community center can fulfill the need of the citizens living around and attract people who live far away. In the process, I used old-new contrast method and combined with the complexity of demanding.

ROOF ANALYSIS---overall shape As the middle part is demolished, the original building presents in two individual part. From the urban context, it is better to keep a whole building in this block corner. Then the simple way is to add a box on the top of them. In order to correspond with the original building's rooftop, I repeat the triangle frame and modifies with curvature.

03 THE MUSEUM OF SOCIAL MEDIA Environments of the New Industrial Revolution

Instructor: Guvenc Ozel, Benjamin Ennemoser, Gabby Shawcross Characteristic: Group Work Collabrator: Haocheng Dai, Xuanyi Xu, Ce Yan Location: Los Angeles, US Spring 2018

This is an experimental museum of social media interaction by applying AR, VR, MR and robot arm technologies. The aim of this museum is exploring contemporary issues and opportunities in local and global cultural trends. In order to realize the concept of the museum, we plan to create a purely physical space with an aggregation of simple geometries, compared to the info overloaded virtual world. We choose mixed reality experience as an example to make a full-scale installation for people to experience in real life. Besides, a 1:75 whole museum model was made for TV projection from bottom to show the overall experience inside.

04 HONG KONG 2047 Proposal of solving the density problem in Hong Kong

Characteristic: Individual Work Location: Hong Kong Summer 2017

HongKong is the ultimate form of “super density”, and what’s more astonishing is that its densification still increase. Its evolution is a process of continuous hybridization, coexist, and reinvention. The crowding, restriction, pressure, and the overloaded use of land caused by high density have caused the uncomfortableness to mask the changing interest of the time and multi-dimensional physical space. In limited plots, the potential of vertical direction seems to have been exhausted when the building has been repeatedly copied along with the boundary of the plot. Stacking, which means the programs are mixed in unusual ways based on the principle of efficiency and benefit.

HISTORY Hong Kong was a colony of the United Kingdom, ruled by a governor for 156 years until 1997, when it was returned to Chinese sovereignty. China had to accept some conditions, such as the drafting and adoption of Hong Kong's mini-constitution before its return. The Basic Law ensured Hong Kong will retain its capitalist economic system and own currency (the Hong Kong Dollar), legal system, legislative system, and people's rights and freedom for fifty years, as a special administrative region of China. Deng Xiaoping, China's supreme leader at the time said, "When the terms expire, China will surely recover its sovereignty over Hong Kong." Deng asked investors in Hong Kong "not to worry," indicating that China will deal with the issue under the "one country, two systems" principle. It has been past twenty years and Hong Kong developed in a great rapid speed. Several urban problems have appeared, such as: the crowding housing, the pollution caused by a great number of people, the traffic congestion, the exhausted land resource and they even have to face the problem of the land rights policy when the next thirty years come. The discussion of a series of problem arrived at the future vision of the city. In the perspective of an architect, we could use the professional method to propose our own plan. 1997 WELCOME RETURN 50 YEARS NO CHANGE ONE COUNTRY, TWO SYSTEMS SPECIAL ADMINISTRATIVE REGION

EVOLUTION PROCESS After calculating the number of units according to the reconstruction of varied functions, I chose LEGO — the modularization material to realize the design in model. I tried to use several sizes Lego blocks to make the model. The transparent square blocks represents the core of each building and there are five other sizes to symbol the divergent functions. I followed the rule I created on the left page and arranged every groups of combination to the core then arrived at the final building form. The rails, served for connecting each cluster, are placed in the midair to realized the air transportation. Process 1

Insert Adding the set groups to balance the ratio of each function.

Pile up Jointing two clusters into one to decrease the ground pressure.

Rotate Alternating the angle of each groups to avoid shading.

Connect Using rails like PRT to connect two buildings.

Process 3

Fianl shape

Based on the precise research of the area, I created five cores to suppor t the whole buildings in this area. The core mains the vertical transportation from the ground level to the upper floors. For horizontal traffic, there are rails such as PRT(personal railway transportation) to connect one building in this core to another building in that core. After raising all the building to the midair, the ground can be liberated and restored to the natural condition. People live in the giant cluster which can offer all the requirements and it is formed like a community. The method to solve the density problem is to concentrate the building in the area then elevated the building higher than the ground.

If Hong Kong continues to maintain a high-density urban form, we have to think about a way of thorough and radical changes, breaking the limitation of the existing way of walking. We try to convert the disadvantage of terrain into the favorable conditions of space and strive for more breathing space in the form of folding according to the high and low density of mixed mode. The architecture will slowly change the behavior of people in space and improve the relationship between environment and architecture. These changes make Hong Kong’s city life an endless intention. Life is no longer just limited to the cross between floor and floor. Spatial experience full of suspense effect of shifting, overcoming the problem of boredom and restriction.

05 TRANSFORMING LA CITY HALL Architectural design & modeling based on style transfer with CNN

Instructor: Prof. Guvenc Ozel, Benjamin Ennemoser, Gabby Shawcross Characteristic: Group Work Collabrator: Zhengtao Liu, Risu Na Location: Los Angeles Fall 2018

This project takes the LA City Hall, located in Los Angeles as the experimental object and it is an attempt to apply artistic styles to architectural design by using CNN, which is an artificial intelligence algorithm and it can integrate the artist’s artworks with architectural pictures together. Machine learning technique enables architects to obtain unpredicted results and widely explore the potential of architectural design.
