olework exercises can help improve various aspects of your jumping, including straightness and rhythm. Using poles to warm up for jumping helps your pony to maintain a rhythm and you to practise keeping him straight. You’ll be able to tell whether you ride a straight line over the poles by comparing the place where you enter the line of poles to the place where you exit them. Aim to ride a perfectly straight line each time. When jumping, trot or canter poles before a fence help place your pony in the correct position for takeoff. This can help you both gain confidence, and concentrate on keeping balanced and in an even rhythm, rather than worrying about when to take off. Using guide poles (two poles placed on the jump in a V shape) encourages your pony to approach the fence straight and jump the centre of the fence. They’re also useful to help you focus on the part of the fence you want to jump. Jumping straight helps your pony stay in balance and produce a better jump than if your approach is wonky. It’ll also help you keep straight on landing, too, which is especially important if you’ve got another fence to jump or are riding a course.

Y N O P R U O Y E MAK Understanding when ponies are stressed and doing what we can to reduce it helps us make our ponies happy, and who doesn’t want to do that?

Top tip!

Our expert

Making sure your fave pony’s daily needs are met will help minimise his stress levels. Preventing stress is better than curing it.

Anna Saillet is an Equine Behaviour Consultant. She has a degree in Animal Behaviour, and a master’s degree in Applied Animal Behaviour and Welfare.

What is stress?

Stress is something we have to deal with in our daily lives and ponies do, too. Stress can be mental, physical or emotional. It’s easy to tell when your pony is under physical stress – for example, if he’s been working very hard – but emotional stress is often more difficult to spot. Many people think that the word stress only relates to negative situations, when actually stress is a normal response all animals use to cope with challenges in their environment. Stress becomes a worry when a pony can’t escape from the situation or thing that’s causing him stress (the stressor), or he’s exposed to it for a long time.

Fact!

The stress response

The stress response is the pattern of changes that takes place after a pony is exposed to an emotional or physical stressor. The pattern is...

Pony is exposed to a physical or emotional stressor

Stress activates the natural flight or fight response

Several involuntary actions occur

Remember that all ponies are individuals and will show stress in different ways. Also, something one pony finds stressful, another pony may not.

Involuntary actions include... l hormones released l loose droppings l increased heart rate l raised blood pressure l faster breathing l senses becoming sharper
