THE MACHINE - GREENVILLE THINKTANK In choosing the bridge site on Broad & Church Street we evaluated the surrounding area: its mixed use context with the potential to grow within the Broad & River Street Gateway, the easy link into existing transportation infrastructure & accessibility to the majority of downtown Greenville’s attractions. This project aims to provide a place for ideas and businesses to grow using collaboration, adaptability, & focus. A machine for business, which is fueled by living, working & community & is connected through a visual form that links all major gears, working together as one. The form becomes a visual & spatial connection that allows for different spaces to work together while still maintaining a clear separation.

FORM DEVELOPMENT Utilizing our key site attributes, our form began to shape around the city & integrate all programs together. This brought in a community aspect that joins the programs of Living & Working together A visual wood form wraps the buildings, catching the attention of visitors & keeps the Machine moving both physically & conceptually. As ideas flow through the key programs, living, working & community, the entrepreneurs work to strengthen their ideas & grow their businesses through a fluid space.

SITE + BUILDING DESIGN A visual wood form wraps the buildings, catching the attention of visitors & keeps the Machine linked & gives the buildings a dynamic presence. As users & their ideas flow through the key programs, living, working & community, the entrepreneurs work to strengthen their vision & grow their businesses through fluid spaces. Our programs were split in to three buildings, providing optimal green space within the courtyard space, maximal sunlight exposure to the units & offices as well as movement throughout the site & wrapping element Users have multiple opportunities for entry into the three buildings, both off public & private courtyards. The wrapping element transitions from pathways to building facades & sun shades, highlighting our key circulation shafts to guide users throughout the site easily.

The machine functions as a creation engine where entrepreneurs live & work in one complex, continuously moving gears to grow and develop ideas within one space. The goal of this site is to maximize both environments for the entrepreneurs and residential users. This thinktank will anchor the Broad & River Street Gateway, providing exposure for the businesses along the Bridge and integrating them into the future of downtown.
