President’s Report Happy Fourth of July THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all those who worked so hard to make the show such a great success!! A big thank you to all the vendors too!! I always enjoy seeing all the beautiful treasures the venders bring. I wanted to thank Jilana Conway for her donation of a kid’s tumbler to the club. It only needs a gasket and it will be good to go. If any club member has an extra one it would be greatly appreciated! There will be a field trip to Heather Lake July 10th. July 17th & 18th will be a two day field trip to Red Top, sounds like a lot of fun! The show and tell for the first meeting is Patriotic Rocks. The second meeting show and tell will be hands on projects. There will also be a program of “How to color stones and stone enhancement”.

How To Corner by Dana James Multi Strand Leather Knotted Necklace Staying with my theme of using leather in jewelry, here is a necklace that will compliment any of the other pieces that you may have made from my other tutorials. All of my tutorials do require some basic knowledge of jewelry terminology or how to make basic wrapped loops and tie knots. Enjoy!

Supplies: •

5 yards of 1mm leather (1 yard per strand)

Various beads that you can string on the leather (be sure to check hole sizing before starting)

12” of 22 gauge wire for wrapping the ends

End caps if desired

Closure (I used the leather loops and another bead as the toggle but you could use something different such as a lobster claw clasp.

Ruler (I know I show a tape measure but that’s what I had handy)

Pliers

Wire cutters

Volume 50, Issue 7

R oc k -A -T e e r

July 2010, Page 7

Instructions: 1. Gather all your beads and cut your leather into 5 36” lengths. 2. Make a knot at the end of the leather about 3” from the end. 3. String a bead on and knot to secure. 4. Continue adding knots and adding beads. Be sure to knot before and after your beads unless you want them to move around. The more knots you make in the leather the shorter it will become. 5. Leave at least 3” of leather at the other end. 6. Continue making strands of leather and beads until you have your desired number. 7. Gather one end of each leather piece and loop over and secure with wire by wrapping around all leather tightly. Complete the other end the same way. 8. Trim the loose ends evenly unless you like that rough look, be sure to leave about ½-¼“ from the wraps. 9. To make your own toggle closure, wrap a rectangle bead. Be sure the bead will fit through the loops on the other end of your necklace securely. See picture for an idea of how this works. 10. Make a wrapped loop through all strands of your leather loops. 11. Finished necklace at 24”. 12. Finished back of necklace with handmade closure. You could also use a button vs. a bead.

Editor’s Report

by Dana James

Today it feels like Summer but it has been a long time getting here. I’ve learned though that in my 20+ years of living in Washington never to rush the hot weather coming. I really enjoy the mild Summers that we do have versus the hot Summers of the mid-West. Paul and I have had a fun month of dealing with some remodeling and we are ready for it to be completed but I fear we have another month to go which is why I am extremely grateful that the weather has started to get better. It is even better for those of you that like to get out and go rockhounding. Now is the time to take advantage of those great trips that the club has planned for this month and next. The last meeting in June was our mini demo night and it appeared that we had a good turn out and lots of demonstrators. I hope our newer members enjoyed seeing some of the great activities and projects that we teach here at the club. Our regular hands on activities will start up again in October as we take the Summer off. Since we are discussing learning new things, each month I publish one of my tutorials for club members. These are proprietary instructions and are to only be used for your personal enjoyment. I do publish them on my blog but eventually they will be taken down and published in a book, so don’t loose your copies as you may want to make one of the projects at a later date and may not want to purchase the book. If you have an idea for a new tutorial but don’t know how to write it up, I would be glad to help you. I’m always looking for new and interesting things to publish. If you would like to submit a letter to the Editor, an article, pictures from a recent field trip, poem, recipe or anything at all that club members might fine interesting, please send to E-mail address: djames50@nventure.com, or mail to 5044 S. Park Ave., Tacoma, WA 98408.
