President’s Report Hello to All! Hard to believe it’s already June and our Club Show is here! I know it will be a big success! I wanted to extend a big THANK YOU to all the people who worked so hard on the 10 new club show cases! They turned out great! The last meeting of May our program was “Ask the Experts”. Thank you to LaVon Siperek, JoAnn Bock and Jerry Chilson for being our “Experts” and answering questions. The show & tell for the first meeting in June is any color of Jade. I’m sure we will see some wonderful specimens! The second meeting in June is our mini Demo-night, so there will be no show & tell.

Editor’s Report

by Dana James

The poem contest ended May 31st and I only received the one poem from Jim Sawaya so maybe we’ll try again another time. I do have news on our members web site. As .NING is going to start charging for it’s web sites we will be moving to another one soon. We have until the end of July to find a new web site and notify all our members and get them moved. I’m in the process of checking out other web sites that are secure with passwords so that we may have our newsletter, roster and any other sensitive information available for members on-line. The sites we are considering (no I don’t have a mouse in my pocket but I do have some volunteers testing the new web sites out with me) Shutterfly, Spruz, & Big Tent. I’ve been staying away from the Google, Yahoo and MSN Groups as I don’t find them easy to manage and they aren’t very pretty. And we all know I’m into pretty. If you want to help out in the testing, please send me an e-mail by June 25th and I’ll send you the test document and invites to the various sites. As we do have a short turn around time, testing will need to be completed quickly. Thanks for all your patience. If you would like to submit a letter to the Editor, an article, pictures from a recent field trip, poem, recipe or anything at all that club members might fine interesting, please send to E-mail address: djames50@nventure.com, or mail to 5044 S. Park Ave., Tacoma, WA 98408.

How To Corner by Dana James Leather Hoop Earrings As I needed a pair of earrings to go with my leather necklaces from last months tutorial here they are. Supplies Needed: • • • • • • • • •

Earring findings (I used sterling silver lever backs) 1mm or .5mm leather cord silver crimp tubes with the loop misc. beads to dangle or if they have a large enough hole, slip onto the leather head pins if needed crimp pliers round nose pliers wire cutters needle nose pliers

Instructions: 1. Gather supplies as noted above 2. Measure two equal lengths of leather (mine were a little over 3") 3. Make wrapped loops on all the beads you want to dangle off the bottom of the leather loop using the head pins (Artbeads.com has a great tutorial) 4. Be sure to tuck in the wire tail after cutting your wire (see I need to do that to this one) 5. String all your beads on the leather to create your design 6. Make sure your cord or leather will fit inside the crimp tube 7. Insert one end of the cord into the crimp 8. Crimp the tube over the leather (be sure to not crimp too close to the loop as the loop will fall off....yes I learned this the hard way) 9. Crimp the other end of your leather with your beads in the center 10. Add your earring finding by opening the loop at the bottom and inserting the crimp loops. Never pull a jump ring or finding directly apart from each other, always twist apart gently until you have just enough room to insert your loops. That's it, make your other earring to match or not....some of you may get really creative and I would love to see what you have done with these.

Conservation and Legislation AFMS Newsletter - June 2010 As written & submitted by John Wright of the Southeast Federation At present National Forest Service area managers and supervisory personnel are still working to revise policies regarding recreational activities in National forests with many aspects being reviewed and modified. Expanded, more detailed policies are expected to be published and placed into effect in a few areas later this year, but in many areas it may require several years. According to published accounts by the Forest Service, “In the interim, the current rockhounding policy will remain in place”, i.e.: (1) Recreational Rockhounding may take place at areas where minerals are loose and free on the surface,

and the activity is not restricted by permit or in an area designated as closed for this activity. Mineral collection must be with non-mechanical equipment and result in no significant ground or stream disturbance. (2) Recreational Gold Panning is allowed where minerals are in federal ownership, using non-mechanized equipment, where no ground disturbance takes place, and where streams are not designated as closed to this activity. (3) Metal detectors may only be used with clearance from the area forest manager. NOTE: Arrow heads, stone tools, and chips left from making them are considered “antiques” and covered under sub-paragraphs (g) & (h), 36 C, Code of Federal Regulations - Title 36: Parks, Forests, and Public Property (December, 2005), Chapter II –Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Part 261 – Prohibitions, Subpart a - General Prohibitions, and the Antiquities Act of 1906. The Paleontological Resources Preservation Act is now law and while it only protects and prevents the collecting of “vertebrate fossils” on federal lands, be aware that most Forest Service law enforcement officers do not know or care about the difference in fossils. You should also be aware that in many areas of the country vertebrate fossils are protected by state laws and collecting them even on private property is prohibited. In most areas Forest Service managers leave the issuing of citations up to the discretion of law enforcement officers and let the courts determine innocence or guilt. ( PS: Federal judges find in favor of federal law enforcement officer 95% of the time.) It is very important to keep our members informed of the changes that are taking place in all of the Regional Federations and also at the ,ational level. These changes will have an impact on our ability to collect rocks, minerals and fossils on public lands. Stay informed and check with the responsible Land Management Office before collecting on public lands to be on the safe side. John Martin, AFMS Committee Chair, Conservation and Legislation

Northwest Federation News Tri-Federation Field Trip, Memorial Day Weekend, May 29-31, 2010, Blue Forest, Wyoming Northwest Rockhound Retreat, September 6-12, 2010, Hancock Field Station, Fossil, Oregon NFMS Convention and Annual Meeting, September 17-19, 2010, Washington County Fairgrounds in Hillsboro, Oregon Link to the NW Newsletter http://www.amfed.org/nfms/nwnews/nw0310.pdf The Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc. is a member of the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies. It was founded in 1938, and one of the original four founders of the AFMS in 1947. It encompasses the Northwest region of the United States, including Alaska and consists of about 70 member clubs with over 4400 total members.

In Memory of Rocky McCall First AFMS Regional Vice President Roscoe "Rocky" McCall has lost his battle with cancer. Born in Brewster, WA, he is survived by his wife Nora, four children, eleven grandchildren and eleven greatgrandchildren. During his lifetime, Rocky held a variety of jobs -- construction at Boeing Aircraft, real estate agent, timber cruzer, butcher and furniture maker, exhibiting his unique talents in each. With his interests in lapidary, Rocky became a member of the Marysville Rock Club where he held numerous offices and committee positions. He also became involved in the Northwest Federation, becoming president for the year 1999-2000. He also served as AFMS Regional Vice President for several terms, the last being this current year. He was a master craftsman and teacher of lapidary work. An interest in intarsia led him to develop the craft and his wonderful work earned him numerous trophies, including the coveted AFMS award. Rocky was a compasionate, fun loving and talented individual and he shall be missed.

There are those of us older members who have known Rocky for years and his wonderful wit and humor with life. Rocky was an accomplished intarsia artist and a member of the Marysville Rock Club. Dana James, Editor
