Leaders LEGACY

Announcing

2011 Amway Hero Award Winners

Leaders LEGACY

On October 14, 2011 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, corporate and IBO Leaders gathered in a historic leadership summit to reflect on where they started, celebrate where they have been, and dream about where the AMWAY™ business opportunity can go.

A gracious “Thank You!” to our corporate leaders, Rich DeVos, Doug DeVos (see inset) and Steve Van Andel (see inset) for their participation. And, a very special “Thank You!” to the Independent Business Owners who participated: Jody and Kathy Victor;

Rex Renfrow; Birdie and Dexter Yager; Georgia Lee and Ron Puryear; Nancy and Jim Dornan; Paul and Leslie Miller; Peggy and Bill Britt; Anna, Seung Ho, and Jay Kim; Tim Foley; and Sharon and Jim Janz.

LEGACY LEADERS

Amway UNIQUELY

West Michigan is home to Amway and to a number of other well-known and well-regarded companies. On paper, those organizations look a lot like Amway. They are companies with an international reach, companies that are family owned and managed. They are each highly acclaimed for treating their employees well, and have great products to sell. Yet, for all of the similarities, Amway is different. Amway is unique – because of the values on which it was founded; because of the DeVos and Van Andel families’ enduring commitment to those values of Freedom, Family, Hope, and Reward; and because of the people who believe in the AMWAY™ business and have taken it to heart to encircle the globe and change lives, one at a time. During the recent filming of the “Legacy Leaders” project, captured in the following pages, corporate leadership and an elite group of field leaders reflected on their shared pasts and mused about the unique opportunity they and millions of other Amway distributors around the world have been given to be a part of something that is so much bigger than each of them. They shared what it has meant to them to be part of the unfolding story and how those things that are uniquely Amway have shaped each of them. Providing the Chance to Dream Amway Independent Business Owner leaders, icons in their own right, were gathered around the boardroom table, poised in anticipation of what Amway co-founder, Rich DeVos, was about to say …

PAGE 2 |

“When Jay and I started this business, we were just a couple of 23-year-old struggling guys who knew it was important to have a business of our own, but not be alone. We knew it was important to have people helping you. We sat around a table – with Dutts, Victors, Hansens – and developed the business plan. Who would have thought it would get this big?

Letting Leaders Emerge

“The group seated here is a successful group of people of achievement. Many were successful before choosing Amway. You are an amazing group, sharing this business with other people all over the world.

“This is a business for the whole family. The legacy you leave behind is your family. I know this business is in good shape. Steve, Doug, and Dick have built this business more than Jay and I did. Before Jay died he said, ‘The number one thing you have to do is protect the business.’ Doug and Steve are doing that with a completely different responsibility than we had – they have to take care of the whole world.”

“People don’t know how to dream anymore. They have to know, ‘I can do better, I can be something more.’ People can’t stop dreaming, and we can’t stop providing the opportunity – someone out there needs us! We need to give hope and encouragement. We’re in the business of helping people help themselves.”

“This business allows us to discover leaders, to give everyone a chance to lead. This is not just a job; people get in this business to emerge. It is about pushing people up. It’s the stuff you do every day in your leadership.

JIM DORNAN

“Isn’t it amazing that we all still just want to sit and listen to Rich talk?”

It was 1959 when Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel formed the fledgling American Way, later abbreviated to Amway. With its humble beginnings in a former gas station in the tiny town of Ada, Michigan, who could have dreamed their new business would one day circle the globe!

“We’re thrilled to see our kids following in the business. There is joy in doing this business and doing it together.”

Amway was not Rich and Jay’s first business venture together, but, without question, it has been the most successful. They believed they could help people achieve their dreams by offering the best products, developing the best business opportunity, and offering that opportunity to anyone. And for millions who followed in their footsteps, it has been exactly that. “The first time I met Rich and Jay, they were coming from this little country town. I was in awe of who they were, what they stood for, and how they wanted to share their dream with anyone who would listen,” remembers Ron Puryear.

AN ALL-AMERICAN

“I had never heard anything like Selling America. It was a stunning message that had a huge impact on me.”

Clashes between communism and capitalism dominated the 1950s. An appreciation for America’s majesty and “the good life” was celebrated through strong patriotic support of the U.S. that flooded onto main street America, including Ada, Michigan. Rich and Jay loved everything this country stood for – especially freedom and independence. Seven years into building Amway, Rich gave a speech, entitled Selling America, to 1,800 Junior Achievement students. The principles he shared that day are the cornerstones of the AMWAY™ business today: Use your gifts and talents to make a contribution, take on leadership roles to change the lives of those around you, and use words of encouragement to change a single life. “I actually took that speech with me – it was on a record – and played it for my high school government class,” says Jody Victor. “I had never heard anything like Selling America. It was a stunning message that had a huge impact on me,” shares Jim Dornan.

“HELLO, FELLOW ACHIEVERS”

… were the opening words of Rich DeVos’ 1967 landmark address to the group of 1,800 young people attending a Junior Achievement conference. To hear Selling America in its entirety, go to: Amway.com > Login, search for Selling America, then click on Resources in the left navigation.

Fundamentals FOUNDERS’

Freedom was so important to Rich and Jay that they made it one of their founding principles, along with Family, Hope, and Reward, which are now known as the Founders’ Fundamentals. “The Founders’ Fundamentals were the reason we got into the business and the reason we stayed,” says Dexter Yager. “They taught us about setting goals, having control over your life – time and finances, and entrepreneurism, which were concepts we’d never heard anybody talk about back then,” says Jim Dornan.

RON PURYEAR

“Nobody had ever been interested in our success before, except us. So that was amazing to me.”

“I was so impressed that their compensation plan, their formula for success, was based on the success of others,” says Ron Puryear. “Nobody had ever been interested in our success before, except us. So that was amazing to me.” “For many, this business was and is the chance to come home and be with family, to do the important things with their family,” imparts Georgia Lee Puryear. “Their dream was always more about values than tangibles,” says Jody Victor about the co-founders. “To me, Rich and Jay were the highest representations of integrity and honesty,” adds Bill Britt. “I didn’t really know what this business was all about until I came up to Ada and met them. And I still believe honesty and integrity are what makes our business so strong.”

Our Inspiration. Motivation. And Foundation. FREEDOM: To own your own business, work hard, and grow. FAMILY: Our essential support and encouragement. HOPE: For all to have personal and professional success.

TOGETHER THEY WERE

JIM JANZ

“They were each very compelling in their own way, and made perfect partners.”

“What I admired about them was their leadership and their calmness, their confidence,” says Jim Janz, noting that the two men were very different, “but together, they were magic, they were just amazing.” Rich was known as the “charismatic” one and his reputation for motivational speaking is legendary (and continues to this day). Jay, who passed away in 2004, was quieter, but he was a brilliant businessman, especially when it came to finances. The Janz family often vacationed with the DeVos and Van Andel families, and Jim says, “I’ll never forget one night we were on their yacht (called the Enterprise) in the Chesapeake Bay. We went out for a clambake, and after the dinner Rich said, ‘You still hungry?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ So we stopped at McDonald’s on the way back to the yacht. Now Jay would never have done that.”

PAGE 10 |

With Jay, he says, the activities were more planned. “You’d go for a fabulous lunch on a Caribbean island somewhere, then walk a volcano, then go for a helicopter ride, all perfectly arranged and executed.” “They were each very compelling in their own way, and made perfect partners,” says Jim Janz.

Dreams FUELED BY

PAUL MILLER

“When I saw the buildings and walked the grounds, I was transformed. It was a real ‘wow’ moment for me.”

“Perfect partners” offering the dream of operating a successful AMWAY™ business fed into the dreams, as humble as they were, that these early pioneers had for their own lives. “My wife just wanted a sofa with good springs in it and I wanted a car that would start reliably in the winter,” says Jim Janz. The Yagers, who had seven kids, were hoping to buy a new clothes dryer. Rex Renfrow says his goal was to bring his family some financial security “and to take them on a vacation once in a while that was someplace other than visiting family in Tennessee.”

PAGE 12 |

Paul Miller was in law school looking to make an extra $400 spending money, but he changed his mind after taking a trip to Ada and realizing what the potential was. “When I saw the buildings and walked the grounds, I was transformed. It was a real ‘wow’ moment for me.”

PRINCIPLES FOR

More than 30 years ago, an early vice president at Amway handed Jim Janz a newspaper clipping listing the six things people want out of owning their own business. “I came up with number seven,” says Jim, “and I still use these today. In fact, I’m giving a talk on them this weekend.”

#1 BELONGING: “ People have a need to belong and this business provides that, both with the company and in our own individual organizations. It’s the glue that keeps it together.”

#2 RECOGNITION: “Recognize people even at the lowest levels. When they do 150 points, give them a Believer pin. It will make them believe they can actually do it.”

#3 FREEDOM: “Understanding the freedom aspect of this business is huge.”

#4 SECURITY: “All the crazy things going on in our economy right now, the stock market, the government, none of it really affects our business at all; it’s as secure as ever.”

Paul & Leslie MILLER Crown IBOs since 1974

#5 CASH FLOW: “The fact that people can create income very quickly, within 90 days, is great.”

#6 LIFESTYLE: “We offer people what they want: control over their lives.”

“An IBO doesn’t get laid off from doing their business; it is an opportunity for college grads who can’t find jobs; it is a wide-open opportunity for people.”

#7 SIGNIFICANCE: “At the end of the day, everyone wants to know they’ve made a difference in people’s lives. A person wrapped up in himself makes a very small package. It’s all about reaching out to others and helping them succeed.”

Products

HANDFUL OF

A dream for something better and a handful of products that they were confident consumers needed was how these first Independent Business Owners started out. Jody Victor clearly remembers one of the products. “Rich and Jay brought a bottle of FRISK™ liquid organic concentrate to my parents’ house. We lived in Ohio, and Akron was a huge producer of car tires. The guys on the line would use FRISK to wash the rubber from their hands. The formula would later become L.O.C.,” which stood for Liquid Organic Cleaner. PEGGY BRIT T

Jody used to drive a van to high school so he could pick up products for his parents at the warehouse after school ended. “I did that five days a week,” he says. Product pick-up and delivery were a big part of running an AMWAY ™ business back then. “There was a lot of manual labor involved, that’s for sure!” laughs Peggy Britt. “Our carport served as a warehouse, and everybody’s products came there; then they’d come and pick them up. We’d be moving and unloading these big boxes and putting products in piles for each of the downlines, and people would be coming and going all the time.” Bill Britt also recalls giving the delivery truck drivers $5 so they’d call to let them know when the delivery was going to be made. “If nobody was home, they wouldn’t leave the boxes. They’d take it all back to

“When people would come and get their products, they’d gather around and literally sit on the soapboxes and Bill would talk to them and motivate them. It was such an exciting time.”

the warehouse in Georgia! So the guy would call me and I’d take a break from my job with the city and run home to get the delivery. I’ll never forget the time this big ol’ 18-wheeler got stuck in the mud in our little circular drive.”

“It was hard work, but we had fun,” continues Peggy. “When people would come and get their products, they’d gather around and literally sit on the soapboxes and Bill would talk to them and motivate them. It was such an exciting time. We were also one of the first and best customers of UPS. Before that, we’d pick up products at the bus station.” Bill adds, “But it was so exciting because people were making money for their efforts. Everybody was willing to do whatever it took to see what would happen next.” “To Nancy and I, the best Amway ‘product’ was always the opportunity itself,” says Jim Dornan. “It was the IBO compensation plan that was so compelling. And that’s still what makes Amway so unique today.”

Paperwork MOUNDS OF

Early business owners also talk about the paperwork required. “You’d need a ping-pong table to spread out all the orders and try to figure out all the bonus checks for everyone,” says Jody Victor, noting that IBOs used to pay all their own bonuses to downlines before the corporation began doing it. “We spent hours on administrative work, calling people at 10 o’clock on a Sunday night to remind them to get their orders in,” agrees Leslie Miller, adding, “This was after spending a full day with the kids. My goodness, I’m surprised we stuck with it!” “Everything used to be done by hand and all you had was an adding machine or calculator,” shares Peggy Britt. Today most everything an IBO needs to manage his or her business is done on a computer or handheld device. DITTO Delivery, Amway calculating bonus checks, Amway direct shipping to IBOs and their customers, and cell phones all make following through on “paperwork” much easier today. ®

Learning FROM THE PAST

Being successful usually involves a person’s ability to learn from mistakes, make adjustments, and keep moving forward. These first IBOs were quick studies, as shown by their business success today! “We thought we could grow our business in one fell swoop. We’d run an ad, rent a room, get cookies and coffee … and then no one would show up! We were expecting the ads to do our work for us,” tells Jim Janz. Tim Foley, a former professional football player, says the biggest lesson he learned was “not acting like a ‘boss.’ You can’t just tell people what to do; you need to get to know them, be a friend, and help them succeed. It didn’t take me long to figure out that the business was more like a football team, and we all had to work together.” Paul Miller says his biggest mistake “was not showing the opportunity to the sharpest people I knew. It took me one and a half years to do that, and those people jumped in; it made sense to them.”

Kathy Victor says her biggest mistake was prejudging people. “I tended to divide prospects into those who could build the business and those who would just be a customer. I wasn’t patient enough in answering their questions. I wanted to move too quickly.”

“As a leader, you need to understand your group and do whatever you can to keep them moving in a positive direction.”

LEGACY LEADERS

Achieving Making an adjustment because of a mistake is usually manageable. Overcoming a personal doubt can prove to be a more formidable task. Although it’s hard to believe seeing them today, many of these leaders say the most significant challenge they had to overcome was their own personal fears.

PERSONAL GROWTH

DEX TER YAGER

“The only way to get over something is to face it head on.”

“Ron was such a help to allow me to become more confident,” recalls Georgia Lee Puryear. “I needed and wanted to change, and he just kept telling me I could do it. And the more we associated with successful people, the more confident I became.”

People may be surprised to learn that Dexter Yager had to overcome a stutter, which is not easy to do. “But the only way to get over something is to face it head on,” he says.

Paul Miller says he sees fear getting in the way of people’s success today, too. “We’ve all had rejections, from family members and everybody else – heck, my own brother laughed at me – but you have to do something to get your confidence level back up; read some self-help books or listen to some motivational tapes. And know that when your belief level increases, so will your self-confidence.”

The Janzes have a saying that works for many: “Do the thing you fear the most and death of fear is certain.” “Jim was 21 and I was 20 and we were living month to month when we started our AMWAY™ business. We had no idea the potential of this business when we started. It was a trip to Ada that created our ‘aha’ moment and turned the page in our life,” shares Sharon Janz.

Having a supportive spouse has always been a big help getting through the tough times, especially at the beginning. “In all my 40-plus years in the business, Peg never made one negative comment to me about it, not once,” says Bill Britt. “She believed in our future like I did, and backed me 100 percent. I couldn’t have a more perfect partner.” Talk about unwarranted fear – Jim Dornan has to chuckle when he thinks about the reaction he got from some people when he first showed the plan 40 years ago. “There were maybe 50 Diamonds back then, and the company had about $100 million in sales,” he recalls. “People would say to me, ‘I think we’re too late; there are already so many people in the business, there’s nobody left to sell it to.’ And today, we’ve got Diamonds and Emeralds in our group who weren’t even born then,” he states about their business, which has grown so large they have nearly 300 employees worldwide who help them run it.

Opportunity A WELCOMING

Imagine the fear of joining a traditionally couplesbased business, located in the heart of the Midwest, if English is your second language or you’re a single woman. The difference with Amway is that this is a wonderful business for those new to the country, or for anyone seeking an opportunity for a better life, to achieve “the American dream.” Anna Kim, who came to the U.S. from Korea in 1988, had been a kindergarten teacher there, but had to turn to waitressing and working the graveyard shift when she and her husband, Seung Ho, an artist, first arrived in New York with their son, Jay. Like many immigrants who have to start over, the couple was barely getting by financially and living with relatives when Anna started her AMWAY™ business to try to earn some extra income. Then, Seung Ho was struck with a serious illness and was unable to help her. “It was very stressful, but I just kept working harder,” recalls Anna, who went on to build one of the first large Korean organizations in the U.S.

Jay says it was a family business from the very start. “All the materials were in English, so I helped with translation into Korean; we had to literally put sticker labels on the products in catalogs. We each did whatever we could. My mom was like supermom back then,” he laughs. “She still is!” They also say they can’t imagine what their lives would be like had they not pursued their AMWAY business. “We don’t talk about that because it’s too horrible to think about,” says Jay, recalling the days when they had to portion out noodles for dinner. And for women, the role of women in the business has changed quite a bit over the decades. Kathy Victor says, “This is a great business for women because it’s such a safe, nurturing environment. And it’s one of the few, even today, where women truly are equal and have the exact same opportunities to grow a business as men.”

World

FREEDOM TO SEE THE

THE KIMS

“Vietnam, Korea, Latin America … the trips are amazing. We love everything about this business.”

Getting through the personal obstacles and building a successful business offers many options for families that a traditional business may not. Many Amway kids grow up in the business and enjoy the perks of traveling with their parents. IBO families will tell you that travel is one of the most treasured aspects of their businesses, whether it be workrelated like Diamond Club in Hawaii, or the launch of a new global market, or personal travel to destinations around the world.

Indeed, when asked what they appreciate most about the lifestyle they’ve achieved, virtually every single one of these legendary leaders had the same answer: Freedom to set their own goals and go after them. Freedom to vacation when they want, to build their business during the time that works best for them, to be home with family, and to do it all based on their own values. “That’s why our ancestors came to America,” says Dexter Yager. “Everybody wants freedom.

“When our youngest was 15, he was complaining that he couldn’t go to Diamond Club because he needed to be in school. I asked him how many times he’d been and he said ‘15,’ so I told him he really couldn’t complain!” shares Jim Janz. “The travel, the lifestyle in this business – there’s nothing like it.”

“Of course, when you get to be our age, you want to be a homebody again; but what’s great is that now you have the freedom to pick where you want to live and then you get to spend your time there,” he adds about living in Florida and North Carolina.

“Vietnam, Korea, Latin America … the trips are amazing. We love everything about this business,” the Kims share. “Seeing the world with our kids gave us some of the best experiences of our lives,” states Dexter Yager, whose business started in Rome, New York, and is now international.

Overcoming HARD TIMES

In addition to the fun perks associated with this business, it also allows people to be around family when you need them the most. Many leaders were touched by overwhelming hardship in their lives: the Puryears lost their son, Brian, when he was just 27; Rex Renfrow’s beloved wife and his two children all died within a few years of each other; Dexter Yager suffered a severe stroke when he was in his 40s; and the Dornans’ son, Eric, was born with spina bifida, and underwent 11 brain surgeries. What sustained them during these difficult times? It was their unwavering faith and the friendships they’ve made in the business. “We knew we could use losing a child as a reason not to continue building our business, but we ‘had to buck up,’ and that was a wise decision because it helped us get through that painful time,” shares Georgia Lee Puryear. “That hard time and this business opened our minds to a new level of faith and hope. We know we’ll see Brian again.” “I had people praying for me all over the world,” says Rex Renfrow about the trying periods in his life. “I just kept going and going and tried not to dwell on the past,” he says.

PAGE 22 |

“Our life would be different today if Dexter had been at a job instead of having built the business when he had his stroke. We didn’t have to worry about where our next meal was coming from. We always tell new people, that’s one of the major things they should be looking for,” says Birdie Yager. Jim Dornan had just quit his job after reaching Platinum and Nancy was already a stay-at-home mom when Eric was born. “Although we were worried about finances, we were very happy that we both had the freedom to be at the hospital as much as we needed to be during that time,” recalls Nancy Dornan.

“You have to remain goal-oriented or it’s hard to lead. Most of our goals now are about helping others succeed – in the AMWAY ™ business and through Network of Caring.”

Investing

IN OTHERS

As they achieved success in their lives, these amazing leaders have received much satisfaction from investing in their local and global communities. Many mention that Rich and Jay set the standard for doing that. “When you go to Grand Rapids and see what those two families have done for that community, it’s just incredible,” says Rex Renfrow, who wrote a check for $10,000 to a friend to help cover the costs of shipping desperately needed supplies to Haiti. From building baseball fields for their hometown, like the Victors have done, to purchasing wheelchairs for the disabled, like the Dornans have, these leaders have given literally millions of dollars – and raised millions more – to help those who need a hand up. “Investing in others has always been part of the Amway legacy and we feel privileged to be able to do our part,” says Tim Foley, who recently received a Founders Council Matching Grant from Amway for his work with Habitat for Humanity in Guatemala. The Dornans’ foundation, Network of Caring, also a recent recipient of a Founders Council Matching Grant, has partnered with agencies around the

globe, such as World Vision, to build orphanages and schools for thousands of children. The couple says their mission is two-fold: “Yes, we’re trying to make a difference in the lives of the children, but we’re also trying to raise the consciousness of people,” explains Jim Dornan. “So we’re involving local leaders and getting them to think in new ways about how they can help equip a hospital or sponsor a school.”

“They don’t have to work, yet here they are flying all over the world, taking time away from their own families, to help us all grow our business,” adds Rex Renfrow. “I feel we’re in very good hands; their hearts and souls are in this business.” “They’re really putting their own stamp on it,” concurs Jim Janz, who says he’s probably one of the few people who gets away with calling Doug “Dougie” because he’s known him so long. Anna Kim says she sees the same combination of leadership and humility in the sons that she did in their fathers. “I remember once I was having my picture taken with Steve, and he was so tall, he had to bend way down to my height, and I just felt that was very symbolic,” she says.

Rex RENFROW Executive Diamond IBO since 1972

“This business is about caring and helping people live better lives, becoming enriched by elevating others. There is a need to give your heart, then your hand.”

She was also on a flight to Africa for an EDC trip once with Doug and his wife, Maria. “I watched their behavior on the trip and was so impressed with their unity and the love they had for each other. To me, that embodies what this business is all about: relationships.”

Business A LEGACY

Legacy: Anything handed down from an ancestor. These legacy leaders have handed down to their children the characteristics of personal integrity, entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic, leadership skills, and the ability to dream – the same characteristics they first found compelling about Rich and Jay and used to build their individual businesses. For next-generation IBOs, watching their leader parents work together to build their AMWAY™ business has inspired them to join their parents in the “family business” or start businesses of their own. In many ways, the second and third generation IBOs face the same challenges that Steve Van Andel and Doug DeVos do: How do you follow in the giant footsteps of your extremely successful parents? “You learn from them, then lace up your own shoes and start walking,” advises Jody Victor, who was instrumental in formulating the company’s succession planning program – which is still being developed – to ensure that there are options that make sense for however a family wants to structure the business.

PAGE 24 |

Steve and Doug, too, had to learn the business for themselves. “It wasn’t just handed to them, they had to work their way up through the organization,” Leslie Miller emphasizes. “We really admire that.” “In their case, the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree,” says Jody Victor. “Steve and Doug are both great guys and I’m convinced Amway would not be the international powerhouse that it is today without their leadership.”

“Young people today understand economic freedom. It doesn’t matter the age or the country – the business is a perfect fit. This business translates culturally. People everywhere want something for themselves.”

“We’ve gone high tech with high touch. Technology doesn’t replace, it enhances. We have the same principles that were there yesterday and we use them today. This business stands the test of time. People continue to be intrigued.”

Georgia Lee Puryear says she sees “a lot of working mommas out there who would rather be home with their families, and that’s always going to be a big draw. You can do it in your spare time, fit it into your life however you want to, and set your own goals. You can’t really lose.” “People will always have hopes and dreams, and that’s why this business will always be attractive,” says Dexter Yager, who may have been the first one to come up with a phrase that has passed through legions of IBOs over the years: “Don’t let anyone steal your dreams.” Paul Miller says that with today’s economic uncertainties, the opportunity is more appealing than ever. “College kids can’t find jobs, unemployment is at 9.2 percent, people with master’s degrees are getting laid off, and financial planners are telling people they better have a back-up plan. So to me, this is one of the best times ever to start an AMWAY™ business.”

Years

“We’re humbled by it all,” adds Ron Puryear. “And very, very grateful.”

THE NEXT 50

So what do these leaders see for the future of the AMWAY™ business, after watching its first 50 years? “With all the improvements in technology and multiple languages, plus all the health and beauty products that are so relevant in the marketplace, I just see it getting better and better every year,” observes Anna Kim.

“The fact that we became an internet-driven business early on shows that we know where the world is going; even old timers like us recognize that,” says Jim Janz, who delivers online seminars every Thursday night to a list of about 700 people. “Plus, programs like the Fast Track Incentive Program are fantastic, not to mention all the support vehicles like ACHIEVE magazine, which is great, and the Achievers events; that team does a great job of making those absolutely superb every year.” ®

“What the company is doing for IBOs today is marvelous,” says Ron Puryear. “From the changes to the Amway IBO Compensation Plan, to the expanded training and all the great new products – plus the advertising and sponsorships with Miss America and Kurt Warner have added so much to our credibility. Amway has done a lot in the last few years to make our opportunity more accepted as a mainstream business and to help IBOs sell our brand in the marketplace.” “I can hardly wrap my head around all the great changes the company has made,” says Leslie Miller. “It’s so cutting edge it blows my mind!” “I truly believe it can become ‘the most admired business in the world,’” adds Ron Puryear, referring to a corporate goal for the future.

PAGE 26 |

Tim Foley says it’s the things that haven’t changed that will keep this business viable in the future. “The real heart and soul of this opportunity hasn’t changed at all: It’s a way for people to have their own business without spending a lot of money to do it. They can grow it as much or as little as they want, and they get all the support they need from two great partners, Amway and their upline. There’s just nothing else like it, period.” Jim Dornan no doubt speaks for all of these leaders when he says: “I can’t imagine anybody being more blessed than we are. We are so thankful for our lives, our memories, the opportunities we’ve had. Good grief, it’s almost overwhelming to think about it.”

Helping Military Families Succeed

M

ike Schindler served his country by enlisting in the Navy. Now he’s serving others who serve their country by providing them with guidance to help preserve their families, strengthen their marriages, and curb domestic violence and suicide. He founded Operation Military Family in 2006 in an effort to help reduce the number of divorces among military families resulting from long separations during deployment and the psychological stress of post-combat life. The mission of the company – which offers relationship-strengthening events and programs, educational materials, and informational products – has expanded to help military families resolve other problems common among them, such as housing and health issues, and delays in veteran benefits.

“We make a difference by finding out what people’s needs are and connecting them to the right benefit or service,” says Mike. “That shores up their family and oftentimes their marriage, which helps keep this country stronger.” Mike’s blog, The Military Wire, is an online forum for raising public awareness about issues that affect service members and their families. “Our family made a decision to invest our personal resources and start this company,” shares Mike, who lives in Edmonds, Washington, with his wife, Keri, and two young daughters, Taylor and Reilley. “Over the past five to six years, we’ve made great sacrifices – personally and financially – in an effort to help turn the ship around on veteran suicide, domestic violence, and increased divorce rates. We kind of went all in on this.”

THE REWARD IS KEEPING THE FAMILY TOGETHER Mike was 8 or 9 years old when he decided that he would someday serve in the military. His father was a civilian engineer who worked for the Air Force Command and the Army Corps of Engineers, so Mike has been around men and women in uniform for as far back as he can remember. He enlisted in the Navy in 1988 and served on the USS Mauna Kea. He completed active duty service in 1990 and active reserve service in 1994. Mike says his proudest moment in the fleet was when he first made rank, as a petty officer third class. Since leaving the Navy, he has tried to stay connected to the service in some way, most recently by helping members of the military through his company and his writings.

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE In his book, Operation Military Family: How to Strengthen Your Military Marriage and Save Your Family, Mike writes that when a spouse goes off to war, his or her marriage has a 1-in-5 chance of ending within two years.

The efforts of Mike and his company have not gone unnoticed. The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs presented him with its Outstanding Patriotic Service Award in 2010. ParentMap magazine recognized him as one of its “2011 Superheroes for Washington Families.” “So it’s come with its awards, but it’s certainly been financially challenging,” he says. “But at the same time, what price can you put on a child who still has their mom and dad?”

When you see someone filled with such God-given passion surrounding a cause that is so great, you want that person to know that all of the sacrifice, strain, stress, and sleepless nights filled with turmoil wondering if you are doing the right thing, doing what God intended, has been worth it and does matter.” ~ Keri Schindler, nominator

Adapt and Overcome

S

tephen Willoby survived a tour of duty in Iraq as a bomb-disposal technician with the Air Force, only to nearly die after breaking his neck in a diving accident. The tragedy left the former staff sergeant unable to move his legs and control his hands, and with limited use of his arms. “In the military, we always said, ‘Adapt and overcome,’” he says. “That’s all anyone can do in the face of adversity. How you adapt determines how you’re going to live the rest of your life,” believes Stephen. His years of military training, coupled with the unconditional love and support of his wife, Erin, have driven Stephen to do his best to adapt to his situation and overcome the obstacles blocking his way. For his efforts, Stephen Willoby is the recipient of the 2011 Amway Hero Award for Determination.

GIVE YOUR BEST Stephen, 28, and Erin, 29, met while they were serving in the Air Force, where both were trained in explosive-ordnance disposal. They married in March 2004, divorced a few years later, then reconnected after Stephen’s accident in September 2007. They remarried while he was still in his hospital bed and now live in Waddell, Arizona. “My wife is my biggest and strongest supporter in all aspects of my life,” says Stephen. “She is my rock, my cheerleader, my reminder, and the reason I do

Stephen is bound and determined to not let his condition stop him from living life and to encourage others to pursue their dreams regardless of their obstacles. He knows that there is a reason for all of this, and he has taken on the responsibility to fulfill his purpose. He is truly my hero!”

virtually everything I do. Also, she is the most difficult therapist I have ever had.” Erin has been her husband’s primary caregiver for four years. She not only helps feed, shower, and dress him, she also motivates him daily in a thousand different ways. “When I experience challenges – don’t want to make a phone call, when I don’t want to go to a function because I’m sick, and when I just feel tired – I think of her and try and push it that much further,” he says. “She gives me her best every day. All I can do is try and do the same.”

MAKE THE MOST OF SECOND CHANCES Stephen has always had a desire to help people, whether through his Air Force job rendering explosive devices safe for others (his unit disarmed more than 160 bombs during his six months in Iraq) or through their AMWAY™ business they call Second Chance Enterprises, which he and his wife started in September 2008. He says he believes being an IBO will have a greater impact on more lives than anything he has ever done. There’s certainly far less risk involved than in his previous career, where one mistake can be fatal. Military bomb-disposal technicians have a short but discomforting saying: “Initial success or total failure.” “Luckily, in this business there are no real penalties for failing unless you fail to try again,” he believes. From his perspective, Stephen reasons that he owes it to the men and women of the military who were less fortunate than him – those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country – to do his best to break down the barriers before him. He’s determined to do so. “I have been given a second chance and do not want to waste it,” he says. “I have too many friends who never got a second chance.”

HERO

Tim Foley

y t i s o r gene

Changing Lives One Build at a Time

T

im Foley earned two Super Bowl rings as a standout defensive back with the great Miami Dolphins teams of the 1970s, but he’d rather talk about his recent work building homes in Central America than his past accomplishments as a pro football player.

He says while most people start AMWAY™ businesses to bring in some extra income, it’s easy to become so engrossed in earning cash that you forget the importance of giving. “Making money is one thing, but if you get too carried away with that, you may lose the purpose of your life.”

Through Habitat for Humanity®, Tim has led a group of volunteers for the past five years – including Amway Independent Business Owners and Amway employees – to Guatemala to construct homes. The number of volunteers has grown from fewer than 10 the first year, to more than 80 in 2011.

40 HOMES IN FIVE YEARS – THAT’S THE GOAL

While the homes help make lives better for families in that Central American nation, volunteers participating in the builds also take away a great deal from their work there, he says. “It is a life-changing experience,” says Tim. “We complain about things here in the United States, but when you go down there and then come back, you complain much less. You always go home thinking, what the heck was wrong with me and what was I complaining about? It’s a healthy experience and you can’t go down there without being affected,” believes Tim. For his efforts, Tim Foley is the recipient of the 2011 Amway Hero Award for Generosity.

KNOWING HIS PURPOSE IN LIFE His adoptive parents were generous people who always encouraged him and their other two adopted children to give. As a Founders Crown Ambassador, he tries to encourage other IBOs, by his example, to give generously of their time and money. “I believe if ‘The Guy In Charge’ lets you make some money, then you ought to do something valuable with it as opposed to not doing anything valuable,” says Tim, who lives in Tavares, Florida. “That was how I was raised.”

PAGE 34 |

Not one to relive the “glory days,” Tim says he “rarely” thinks about football these days. Instead, he enjoys talking about how much he and the other volunteers have gotten out of building homes over the years. In an effort to continue volunteer opportunities for home builds, Amway pledged $500,000 to Habitat for Humanity for the purchase of developable land, and eFinity pledged another $250,000 to build a community of 40 homes over a five-year period in Zacapa, Guatemala. As a result of Tim’s vision, Amway IBOs now plan to build homes in nine other Latin American countries under the program, says Gary Kovar, leadership development officer for Habitat for Humanity International. “Now we’re kind of spreading out,” says Tim. “We kind of got the hang of it, so we’re going to start building in Brazil, Argentina, and Colombia – all throughout Latin America because that’s where a lot of the IBOs in the eFinity group live. That should be fun.” Tim is a humble person who isn’t interested in receiving personal recognition for his accomplishments, says Gary. Instead, his motivation is to help those in need while setting a philanthropic example for others. “Tim doesn’t do it to say, ‘Look what I’ve done,’” says Gary. “For Tim, it’s never been about the dollars. It’s been about, ‘How do I help other IBOs in my group be better people?’”

HERO Fulfilling High Expectations

Ulises Feliz

p i h s r e d a le

A

s long as Ulises Feliz can remember, people have expected a lot from him. And while poets and philosophers influenced his thinking on leadership, it was his family’s high expectations that drove him to become an outstanding leader. “Everybody around me was expecting excellence from me and I was ready to affirm those hopes,” says Ulises. “There began my search of doing beyond the average thing. This expectation played the role of me being someone who was seeking to stand out anywhere.” He believes everyone is born with leadership potential, but it’s the willingness to take on great responsibility that makes a person a true leader. Ulises, a Founders Diamond, has made it his mission to help fully develop the leadership qualities inherent in those IBOs who are downline from him. For his efforts, Ulises Feliz is the recipient of the 2011 Amway Hero Award for Leadership.

GIVING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE “The fact of being nominated is something that fills me with satisfaction,” says Ulises, who lives in the Dominican Republic. “It represents, to a great extent, what others think about you and what you mean in their lives.” He takes pride in being someone who has given so much of his time to help discover and develop the talents of others, so that they, too, can excel. “The moments that make me feel the proudest are each of the moments in which someone we have mentored reaches a valuable goal or learns something new,” says Ulises. “I want to be remembered as a person who gave everything possible to help others excel, as someone who stood out as a leader for his aptitude in doing the just thing, and for helping to discover and develop the talents of others.” He has a simple inspirational saying he shares with IBOs: “For those who believe, anything is possible.”

His strongest leadership skill, he believes, is mediating differences that come up among other leaders. Ulises has written a book that he hopes will someday be published, tentatively titled Better Rich and Honest. It summarizes his vision of ethics and business in an environment of leadership. His biggest desire is to help others fulfill their potential and overcome their challenges while still maintaining their values. In turn, their success inspires him. He says besides helping other IBOs to become better leaders and live improved lives, his AMWAY™ business has allowed him to provide for his own family and support his community.

RECOGNIZING HIS GREATEST INFLUENCE When he was younger, Spanish poets Miguel Hernández and Antonio Machado, and the Greek philosopher Plato, were among the many great minds that started Ulises thinking about what it takes to be a good leader. But no one influenced him more than his own mother, Flor Talaveras, a doctor who raised seven children. She taught Ulises to think big, be positive, and reject any thoughts of being poor and living with limitations. “She is my example because of her humbleness, the greatness of her vision of life, and her faith in God, her children, and her own personal power.”

Ulises is a 360-degree leader able to see the best in people. I thank God and the AMWAY business opportunity for putting in my life an example to follow, a leader to emulate, a trustworthy friend, an ethical guide to work with, a shoulder to mourn on, a hand to help me get up again.” ~ Rafael Gonzalez, nominator

the eFinity group to help build houses for those in need through Habitat for Humanity®. Dr. Freed says he grew up in a very giving and spiritual family of 12 children and “learned from my parents to serve and to be generous with other people.”

JORGE MARCELO OEHLENSCHLAGER

Helping Students Understand the Importance of Patriotism Tiffany Carson always wanted to do something for the benefit of men and women serving in the U.S military. So she led a fundraiser at Wendell Middle School in North Carolina, where she teaches math, that took in over $5,000. The money was used to assemble and deliver more than 100 care packages to members TIFFANY AND TIM CARSON of the armed forces from her community serving overseas as well as to their families, locally. By getting students at the middle school involved in the project, they learned more about the services provided by the military and the importance of patriotism, she says. “To see how excited that sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders could get about it was just unbelievable.”

who inspired her with their self-confidence and perseverance. She has become an important voice, literally, within the fast-growing Latino community of Seattle, where her Spanish-language talk radio program is regularly broadcast on KXPA-AM. “The most satisfaction in being a leader is to inspire and to serve others,” she says. Sandra decided that another way she could help the community would be to become an Amway Independent Business Owner and start motivating other Latinos to become business leaders as IBOs. “I want them to accomplish their dreams,” she says.

Inspiring Others to Give Generously Jorge Marcelo Oehlenschlager made his first trip to Fundación Rose Mine de Diegue, an orphanage in Haiti, only days after the deadly earthquake that struck the Caribbean nation on January 12, 2010. He went to deliver food, water, milk, diapers and medicine, but left wanting to do more for the orphanage after seeing its primitive conditions. Jorge and some of his friends formed an organization, Juntos por Haiti, to organize donations for the orphanage. It has since delivered bedding, chairs, and backpacks filled with school supplies. He hopes his generosity will inspire others to do the same. “The world needs from each of us to give without expecting anything in return,” he says.

Motivating Latino Business Leaders Sandra Maqueda says she learned how to be a leader from the example set by her parents,

AS AN AMWAY IBO, YOU ARE HEROIC IN MANY WAYS. You work on improving yourself every day. You focus on helping others achieve success. You demonstrate loyalty to your community and country. You give your time and resources to improve the world. To recognize and reward IBOs who excel in these areas, Amway is searching for 2012 Amway Heroes in North America. In the next issue of ACHIEVE® magazine, we will provide guidelines for nominating a Hero for awards in four categories: DETERMINATION: recognizing personal responsibility, work ethic, and dedication to self-improvement despite difficult circumstances.

LEADERSHIP: recognizing a positive focus on mentoring, teaching, and helping others succeed without personal gain.

Bringing Help to Haiti Many physicians provided their medical services in Haiti following the January 2010 earthquake that devastated the poor Caribbean country, killing or injuring tens of thousands of people. Dr. Clarence Freed, however, was already volunteering there when the quake hit, and has since returned eight more times to provide additional medical and related help. “There’s so much that needs to be done there,” he offers. In addition, he has traveled to Guatemala for each of the past five years with Tim Foley and

Emerald

Reaching Emerald is a significant achievement, the result of sustained effort and successful leadership. As Emeralds, IBOs have demonstrated their ability to sell, recruit, train, motivate, and teach others to do the same. They have built healthy organizations and are reaping the rewards of their hard work.

Gurjeet and Randy Deol | Ontario Living the dream: “I wanted to create some additional, ongoing income,” says Randy, a senior manager in telecommunications, “because our oldest child has spina bifida. Then we learned about the AMWAY™ business opportunity and realized we could leave a legacy.” Gurjeet has already replaced her income and left her job as a monitor operator. Looking to the future: “We’re looking forward to spending more time with the kids (Deep, 24; Robby, 22; and Michael, 18) and loved ones,” Gurjeet says. “We’re going to be able to do what we want in life and enjoy peace of mind,” adds Randy. “We can enjoy complete control over our time and finances.”

Deudiel and Angelica Bernabe | California

Ines Guevara and Pedro Lopez | California

Living the dream: “We just love hanging out together,” says Deudiel of his family, wife Angelica and kids Napoleon (21), Diana (20), and Deudiel, Jr. (13). Since Deudiel sold his last landscaping accounts, they’ve had more time for travel (their favorite place is Orlando), eating out, and bonding at the mall and at home.

Living the dream: “Grateful” is how Ines says she feels to be freed from the general merchandising kiosk she and Pedro used to own and run. He certainly doesn’t miss the long hours in his cab. “We had faith that our AMWAY business would give us the results we were looking for,” she says, including more time together as a family.

Looking to the future: “My dream is too big for my years left on this earth,” acknowledges Deudiel, who desires to eradicate poverty around the world. Says Angelica, who used to think she wasn’t Amway IBO material, “I want to change the self-limiting mentality of the people we meet so their lives can be transformed by this business like ours were.”

Looking to the future: Pedro and Ines, along with daughters Emily (21), Roxana (19), and Arianna (16), share “many goals of helping people and animals,” Ines says. They’ve already rescued seven dogs, and they hope someday to give two boys a forever family. They’re also looking forward to traveling more and coming home to the house of their dreams.

Marina Bernal | California

Shi-Rong Han | Nevada

Living the dream: Marina and her son Christopher (9) “love to hop in the car or on a plane and just go.” The former restaurant manager says the best part of her AMWAY™ business is “the freedom to choose how I spend my time. I don’t have to ask permission if I want to go on vacation.”

Living the dream: “I didn’t expect this much!” Shi-Rong says of the many benefits she’s experienced from her AMWAY business. She was able to send her son, Shi Han, to private school and leave her full-time job. They’ve “enjoyed having more time to spend together as a family and to travel the world.”

Looking to the future: “I want my son to see the world and experience other cultures,” including her native El Salvador, Marina says. “There are so many people who need help, and we need to share what we have.” Sharing the “good news” of the AMWAY opportunity with others “doesn’t feel like work,” she says. “I love what I do!”

Looking to the future: “The most valuable dream I have is helping others with their own AMWAY businesses,” she says. “I want people to know this business can turn your life around. It’s a tool for helping you achieve your dreams.” Best of all, “It’s a teamwork business,” so you’re never without support. Helping others “doesn’t feel like work to me!”

Belkis and Ramon Garcia | Dominican Republic

Anita and Hari Anantha | Ohio

Living the dream: “The AMWAY business opportunity is truly the opportunity of a lifetime,” believes Ramon. He and Belkis struggled to make ends meet with their small appliance business. Today, “we’re no longer concerned with surviving,” he says. “We have a new house, our kids are in a good school, and we can help our parents and our church.”

Living the dream: When Hari and Anita learned about the AMWAY business opportunity, he saw a way “to have a Plan B” should something happen to his job and she saw a way “to live a life of significance.” Both appreciate that it’s “an enterprise we can build together.” Adds Hari, “Our AMWAY business has given us a lot of choices.”

Looking to the future: “We’ve purchased land for our church (which they pastor),” says Belkis. Besides a new church building, “we plan to build a free school and potable water distribution center nearby.” Adds Ramon, “Our desire is to bless as many families as we can with the AMWAY opportunity and all it can offer.”

Looking to the future: “We have a heart for children and believe in supporting causes that benefit them,” Anita shares. “Leaving the world the same, not making a difference, scares me.” She and Hari desire to gain even “more control over our time and money” so they can continue to make life-changing choices, like supporting their parents in India and traveling and sharing the business opportunity around the world. “I’m looking forward to exploring the world beyond my cubicle!” Hari says.

The average monthly Gross Income for “active” IBOs was $202.

Approximately 46% of all IBOs were active.

U.S. IBOs were considered “active” in months in 2010 when they attempted to make a retail sale, or presented the Amway IBO Compensation Plan, or received bonus money, or attended an Amway or IBO meeting. If someone sustained that level of activity every month for a whole year, their annualized income would be $2,424. Of course, not every IBO chooses to be active every month. “Gross Income” means the amount received from retail sales, minus the cost of goods sold, plus monthly bonuses and cash incentives. It excludes all annual bonuses and cash incentives, and all non-cash awards, which may be significant. There may also be significant business expenses, mostly discretionary, that may be greater in relation to income in the first years of operation.

RECOGNITION

Francisco and Consuelo Hernandez | California

Longsheng Lei and Fu Hua Wang | California

Living the dream: Since starting their AMWAY™ business, Francisco and Consuelo have experienced “the nicest surprises,” including the sales incentive bonuses they’ve enjoyed by “becoming better decision-makers” and following the guidance of their upline. “We haven’t received that kind of compensation from a normal job,” he says. The couple was honored to talk about their business recently in an interview on Telemundo.

Living the dream: Longsheng achieved much success in traditional businesses in China before buying an almond farm in California. Prior to moving to the U.S., he learned about the AMWAY™ business opportunity, and he saw “a huge business with big potential. For me, this business is about the satisfaction of reaching a big goal and leaving a legacy for my children.”

Looking to the future: “We have many dreams,” Francisco says, including treating their parents to the good life, sending their children, Carolina (11) and José Emmanuel (9), to college, and celebrating their daughter’s quinceañera in Paris. “Our biggest dream is helping our team’s dreams come true,” says Consuelo. “Every time we see their kids’ faces, we see our own children’s hopes reflected in their eyes.”

Caroline Sun and Han Hsu | California

Ramon and Sonia Mendoza | California

Living the dream: Han and Caroline’s AMWAY business allows them to do what they love. “My passion is helping people improve their health,” says Han, a trained energy healer and former engineer. Caroline finds the education component of their business right up her alley. “I used to teach language,” the former VP of a Chinese language school remarks. “Now I teach about life.”

Living the dream: Sonia and Ramon have always believed in working for themselves. When the AMWAY business opportunity appeared, “We saw a way to buy back time,” says Sonia, who planned to open a law firm in addition to their bridal business and a small accounting firm. Today, “We have more time to spend with (daughter) Yazmin and our girls (dogs), Coco and Lili.”

Looking to the future: “At first, I didn’t believe Amway was an international business,” Caroline admits. She has since traveled to Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Sweden, Vietnam, and Russia with her and Han’s AMWAY business. “The sky’s the limit for how many people we can help,” says Han, who’s looking forward to having more time to ride the three motorcycles sitting garaged at their home.

Looking to the future: With time comes choice. “We love having personal time and time to travel!” says Ramon. He and Sonia are excited to be able to “give back” to others, especially causes that aid children and the elderly. “We’ve learned to care for ourselves and others,” states Ramon, who has lost 40 pounds and recovered his health since using NUTRILITE® nutritional products.

Flor and Guadalupe Jasso | Texas

Johana and Heraclio Puentes | Texas

Living the dream: “If we had traditional jobs, we wouldn’t be able to take the kids (Osvaldo, 6, and Natalia, 2) to the zoo or park or out for ice cream during the week,” Guadalupe says. “We can be attentive to their needs, and not feel rushed in the time we spend with them,” Flor adds.

Living the dream: Thanks to his and Johana’s AMWAY business, Heraclio was able to leave his job in construction. Nowadays, they get to spend more time together and with their children, Brisa (13) and Kathy (10). “We work together, travel together – and we love it!” he says. Their greatest surprise? Qualifying for Sapphire and Emerald in the same month!

Looking to the future: The Jassos anticipate the day they can help their parents retire. They also want to “travel everywhere,” including Brazil for the 2014 World Cup. And someday, Guadalupe says, he will fulfill his childhood dream of owning a bank. “I grew up very poor and was drawn to the self-assuredness of the people at the bank.”

PAGE 42 |

Looking to the future: Longsheng and Fu Hua have their sights set on Crown Ambassador. “Our goal is to be the No. 1 organization in the United States,” he says. Their college-aged sons are also pursuing AMWAY businesses of their own. “This business is so family-oriented! It’s definitely changed our lives for the better,” Longsheng believes.

Looking to the future: The Puentes family is looking forward to purchasing a home in the near future, complete with stables for their three horses. “We love riding, swimming, traveling – just doing things together as a family,” Johana says. Trips to the Pacific Riviera and, of course, Diamond Club in Maui top their vacation wish list.

Raj and Deepthi Kalavacharla | Texas

Alfredo and Dinora Rivera | Illinois

Living the dream: “We were able to hire a live-in nanny for our son Advai (1), thanks to our AMWAY business,” says Raj. He and Deepthi, both IT analysts, have also been able to help Raj’s parents live very comfortably in India, and they are aggressively pursuing true financial independence at a young age, something “we could never dream of doing without this business,” Raj says.

Living the dream: “Happiness” is life transformed by an independent AMWAY business, say Alfredo and Dinora. Before, “we never saw each other and were always stressed and tired,” Dinora says – Alfredo worked two full-time jobs and Dinora worked six days a week. Now, “we have no debt, no job pressure, and endless quality time as a family with Matthew (7) and Efrem (2),” Alfredo says.

Looking to the future: “I’m excited to travel more,” says Deepthi. “You need money and time to do that and this business helps us generate both.” She and Raj also enjoy the leadership training that’s vital to building a successful AMWAY business. “Amway creates world-class leaders,” Raj believes. “To see people blossom in front of our eyes, that’s worth more than any check!”

Looking to the future: Seeing your downlines’ lives change for the better? “Priceless!” according to the Riveras. “We talk with our group a lot about giving back,” says Dinora. “One of our biggest dreams is to create a place for disadvantaged children to go,” Alfredo shares. “We’re capable of great things, especially when we’re united with something as big as Amway.”

RECOGNITION

Pratima and Neelesh Singh | Illinois Living the dream: “If I never saw the AMWAY™ business opportunity, I’d still be working in the tech industry but never know my potential,” says Neelesh. “This business empowers you to take control of your future and see your dreams come true.” He and Pratima enjoy having lots of time to spend with daughter Gauri (5) and son Prithvi (3).

Sapphire

Achieving Sapphire exhibits dedication to building a sustainable, balanced business and mentoring others to do the same.

Looking to the future: “I dream of building houses for the homeless in India,” says Pratima. “With a job, you’re working for your bread and butter and there’s little left over for helping others. With an AMWAY business, you can make a difference.” The Singhs desire to travel the world and spend more time with their families in India.

Jagveer and Manju Singh | Maryland Living the dream: “As our AMWAY business grows, it gives us more flexibility with our careers,” says Manju, who works in health care management at a prestigious hospital. “It’s all about having choices,” agrees Jagveer, who enjoys managing money. “Our boys saw us building this business with a tremendous amount of work ethic, honesty, and integrity. The motto in our house is ‘love and hard work.’”

Looking to the future: “We’re getting to the stage in our lives where we’ll have more time with the kids (Sameen, 21 and Aseem, 17) out of the house,” says Jagveer. “We intend to use that time for growing our AMWAY business.” Manju shares, “We like vacationing. I’m looking forward to going back to Hawaii at Diamond and would like to do more international travel. There’s so much in life to look forward to!”

LEGACY LEADERS

An Enduring Relationship AMWAY AND IBOAI

Bill Hawkins and Jody Victor take a moment to share why the Independent Business Owners Association International (IBOAI) is such an important part of the Amway legacy.

Why is the IBOAI unique in the direct selling world? BILL HAWKINS: We are the only company in this industry that has a bona fide trade association that represents the interests of “all” IBOs in North America. The partnership between Amway and the IBOAI has a rich 51+ year history. JODY VICTOR: We are the only direct seller to set up a trade association, effectively giving the field of IBOs a direct voice in the policies and procedures from the very first day of business.

Why was it important to Rich and Jay to support this as an advocacy group for North American IBOs? BILL: The vision of this business was that if proper principles were adhered to, the AMWAY™ business opportunity would stand the test of time. The IBOAI was established in Rich’s own words, “to prevent us from, down the road, changing the deal.” JODY: The founding principles set forth prior to the launch of Amway directed the business then and continues to today. Rich and Jay needed and heeded the IBOAI voice to be relevant and consistent in implementing the best company of its kind.

Why is it so important to work in partnership with IBOs? BILL: The relationship between Amway, the IBOAI, and IBOs is one of the most enduring relationships in American business. It is the ultimate symbiotic relationship – two forces that exist for the good of each other. IBOs have been good to Amway, and Amway has been good to IBOs for over five decades. JODY:

Love Bill’s answer.

How has the IBOAI helped shape the business opportunity? BILL: Nobody knows how to make this business work like the IBOs who actually build it. Because Amway takes valuable insight from the IBOAI Board of Directors (proven leaders in the business) and IBOs, it gives them a proven advantage over other companies in this industry. It allows Amway to give IBOs what they need to build successful businesses. JODY: Implementation. There is only one way to make this business run smoothly and that is to work with the IBOs who are growing, prospering, and remain loyal to the founding principles. Amway has always gone to the IBOAI Board of Directors for all changes that could materially affect the IBO. This has made it possible for Amway to keep every one of its promises.
