Issue 11, Dec 2009
Blissful Eid It’s December already and another year has come and gone. Speeding by us with major milestones like the remarkable KAUST’s inauguration, America’s first black President, 20 years anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the death of Michael Jackson King of Pop as well as many other major events that made history or changed the world as we know it.
We wanted to give you one last chance to see DJ at its best with some of our favorite coverage from our first full year of bringing you the best from Jeddah and around the country. In this issue we’ve made a quick recap of our year’s coverage of the major events, our favorite Through Our Lens images, as well as our most memorable features of places across the Kingdom. From Alalawi market in Albalad to Gucci opening their largest store in the Middle-East, this month has been packed with good information for you to discover or rediscover. Also with our new TechThamer section we’ve compiled a great selection of random gadgets that maybe you can treat that special nerd in your life to.
For those who love food, this month was especially good to Jeddah’s dining scene with mouthwatering and eco-friendly Pizza Fusion opening in Rawdah Star Center. If Pizza’s aren’t for you we’ve also found the most authentic Italian food in town at Isabella’s where we guarantee you won’t be forgetting anytime soon.
Want to know what Jeddah’s nightlife is like? Well our Red Sea correspondent has been poking around the Red Sea at night for a few years and he’s brought us some outstanding images of the deep blue sea. All in all we hope you have a blissful Eid and a happy New Year.

With her cool blue eyes and youthful pony tail, Olivia Arthur could be just another expat new to the Kingdom, camera in hand, benignly pointing her lens at whatever she sees. Arthur traveled to Saudi Arabia for a project she started close to two decades ago documenting women in the Middle-East. From women in Iran to polygamist homes in Turkey, Arthur has gone far and wide to document women around the world. The project is her bid to gain membership to the prestigious Magnum agency. Should she be accepted, Arthur would be working amongst the best photographers and photojournalists in her field. Behind her deceptively simply appearance, however, stands a body of work that is anything but. For the past few weeks the British-born Arthur has been traveling the country, trying to document a subject that she says most westerners still do not understand: a woman’s life in Saudi Arabia. “I wanted to produce something that gives some sort of insight into life here,” she said. 6

Olivia Arthur:
Initially a mathematics major, Arthur stumbled into photography after taking a job at her University’s newspaper. She now works full-time as a free-lance photographer and has just finished her trip to the Kingdom, focusing on women and their place in Saudi society. “My first trip I was not sure what the best way to do that was, so I photographed a lot of different things,” she said about her initial expedition in February of 2009. Trying to get her bearings and a real understanding of the culture, Arthur used over 160 rolls of film photographing everything from universities and cultural festivals to hospitals to shopping malls her first time out. Within a few days, Arthur had seen more of Saudi than many expats see in a decade. In a previous interview Arthur said she was
frustrated she could not fully document her experience as she saw it.
In 2007 Arthur was awarded the Inge Morath award from Magnum for her work documenting women along the border of Europe and Asia.
“The frustrating bit is that I’m having a fantastic time but I’m not able to portray that in my photographs. The amount of openness and friendliness that I’ve encountered but you can’t photograph everything and when you’re talking about women you can’t photograph a lot of what you see,” she said in February when she had just begun her project. She said one of the more difficult things to understand was the cultural restrictions women have to live with. Many of the women who allowed her to take their picture later changed their minds and asked that the images not be used out of consideration for their families. “In Iّ ndia, I had to literally fight to get people out of my pictures,” she said sternly while comparing her experiences around the world. Arthur said it created quite a problem, because she lost the ability to use images that helped tell the story she was hoping to convey. With this in mind on her next trip to the Kingdom, she added a small digital camera to her arsenal of professional-grade equipment. The hand-held Panasonic is worlds apart from the clunky and more obvious Hasselblad camera she normally carries with her. “With the Hasselblad, its only a certain type of photograph you can take. It’s a slow
camera; it’s the way you use it, everything about it is just different,” Arthur said. “When I use the smaller camera, (the women) still notice me but they don’t see me as a professional photographer anymore. Since I flip between the two (cameras) I’m still the funny English girl who takes pictures of everything.” The idea for the digital camera originally came from a discussion with a another professional photographer, who mentioned that it might be interesting to see more of Arthur’s own experiences as well as her documented work.
“I’m doing the digital snappy stuff because it makes it feel more real,” Arthur said.
She said she is not sure how she will use the digital images, but is considering a collage of her digital images so that viewers can take advantage of the amazing access she had to Saudi women’s daily lives. With a quizzical look creeping across her freckled face, “I’m not sure what I will do with all this in the end,” she said. “I want to exhibit the work abroad but I’m not sure if I would exhibit it in Saudi just based on the sensitivities of some of images.” “People keep asking me ‘what do you think of Saudi’?” she said. “All I can tell them is that it’s complicated.”

white images, she captured with a pinhole camera, of Balad for her “Once Upon a Time” photo experience. The oldest part of town and the most photogenic has never looked both so solemn and yet so beautiful. Lending a sense of antiquity to her work for the exhibition, the focus was “to preserve those stories, that oral history that fades away,” she said. “Parts of that oral history are missing, once it moves on and the parts are forgotten.” She recorded interviews with residents of the historical district and then documented the most important and symbolic places iconic to Jeddah. “I want my audience to walk into a space and actually look at pictures and hear a story and have an experience.”
Working as a commercial photographer for Wed Productions, she said she likes to experiment in different mediums of photography and especially with dark room and more traditional mediums. Returning to Jeddah to be with family, Abdul-Jawad is a blossom of a globalized world combining old techniques with a contemporary mindset to bring the past alive.

SAUDI INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW: Over the last year, the auto industry has taken a big hit from an international recession to dwindling sales of previous market leaders; a hit so harsh that companies like Toyota recorded its first loss since its beginning 70 years ago. The 30 year strong Saudi International Auto Show attracts roughly 100,000 visitors and features a slew of cars from across the spectrum of luxury to the more economical varieties. The exhibition ran from Oct. 25-29 at the Jeddah Center for Forums and Events. Market giants General Motors (GM) and Chrysler were the worst hit by the recession and that much was evident by their obvious absence from the Saudi International Auto Show. Ford was there in full force putting on a show much different from the last few years. The show, usually dominated by large SUVs, was lacking in off road vehicles. Ford was no exception with their showcase on the 2010 Ford Taurus which “represents great opportunities to for us to speak to consumers who are looking at larger vehicles,” said Theo Benson, marketing communication product manager for Ford Middle-East. Despite the difficult times in the past for the auto industry, the Saudi International Auto Show is a microcosm of what the entire auto industry is going through; going back to basics and rediscovering what consumers want and not what they should want. 10 DESTINATION JEDDAH

As part of a wider plan of encouraging home businesses, King Abdullah has set out a plan to finance 100,000 projects operating out of Saudi homes, all while stressing that the public and
private sector should work in partnership to help small businesses like these. The program is designed to create a transitional step from a purely consumptive society to a society which is more productive under the slogan ‘We are all productive.’

GERMANY CELEBRATES 20 YEARS AFTER THE BERLIN WALL: The day of German unity: ‘Tag der Deutschen Einheit’ is the European country’s national day. Celebrated on Oct. 3rd, in memory of the fall of the Berlin Wall, reverberating as an event that changed the world. Marking the twentieth anniversary since the Wall crumbled, the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Michael Zickerick, hosted a generous reception on Oct. 31st at the Jeddah Hilton hotel, made possible through Lufthansa’s and Mercedes’ sponsorship. Together with Mohamed Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Director General of the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Zickerick immersed the
mixed group of attendants in an evening of culture. Switching between English, German and a one-liner in Arabic, the Consul General “highlight(ed) that it had been 80 years since the Saudi Arabia and Germany joined in 1929,” at a time when the two countries had not yet been fully formed. It wasn’t until 1949 that the Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BDR) came to exist. Zickerick addressed the Saudi-German economic ties and said a formal German Consulate is underway to being established in Jeddah, facilitating the issuance of visas for Saudis and local residents in an attempt to further cement the on-going relationship. He added that other recent projects within the Kingdom, such as KAUST’s ambitious undertaking, were established with German support.

Looking Back Bored on the weekend? How about a trip to the white sandy beaches of Masturah or the mountain top cities of Abha? There’s more to do in Saudi than just feign boredom. We at DJ absolutely love to discover new places around the Kingdom, and luckily for us there are plenty of places to go and see. For our final issue of 2009 we have chosen some of our favorite places we’ve profiled for you to enjoy and give you that second chance to think about going.

Exploring the Kingdom
Mada’in Saleh Issue 0 Mada’in Saleh is a historical treasure located among sand swept stone walls where unique rock formations have attracted curious visitors through the decades. It’s also known as the southern twin city to Jordan’s New Wonder of the World Heritage site, Petra. These geological wonders are located just outside of Al Ula, a small city about two hours north of Jeddah.

The camel races that take place in Taif every August are more are more mindful of and true to the spirit of ancient Bedouin traditions. Today, it’s more like an outdoor camel convention for a month and tourists are invited to view fron the side rail. Over time a discreetly marked desert area outside the Okaz souq in Taif has become the home of camel racing in Saudi Arabia.

Madinah Issue 2 As the city where the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lived and taught before his triumphant return to Makkah, Madinah is central in Islamic history. Millions of pilgrims visit Madinah each year. Madinah is renowned for its historical mosques and sights, its food, and more than 150 varieties of dates. Although Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) prayed blessings upon all food in the city, the dates are particularly famous. A day with the right guide and a quick cruise in an air-conditioned SUV, is all it takes to see of a vibrant Arabian Gulf Coast seaside port without feeling the heat of the day. In Qatif today, even the old houses have an air conditioner patched into a wall. The few structures from the past include coral buildings three to four stories high and are marked for renovation and protection or demolition.

Shaybah & Al-Rub Al-Khali Issue 4 There is no place like Saudi Arabia’s Rub AlKhali (Empty Quarter) - a land of unforgiving extremes that is ranked as one of the largest sand deserts in the world, encompassing some 650,000 sq km and covering most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. It is an extraordinary moonscape of sand dunes, sparse thorn bushes and rocks. DESTINATION JEDDAH 21

Ha’il Issue 5
Surrounded by the Shammar and Salma Mountains in northwestern Saudi Arabia is the city of Ha’il – the center of the country’s agricultural program, home to a number of famous heroes and prominent poets and more recently, the host of the annual Ha’il International Rally event.
Al-Fara’a Issue 8
Nestled deep in the meanderning network of widis, on the outskirts of Taif, inside a natural reserve, sits a semi-abandoned ancient Yemeni village, known as Al Far’a. Dating back to when the Yemeni territory stretched upwards for most of the Arabian Peninsula, this place is an iconic reminder of how bountiful the region used to be.

Al-Lith island is part of the Farasan Banks chain; divided into two areas, between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, named Farasan Banks and Farasan Archipelago. The islands extend south from Jeddah all the way down to the coast of Yemen. Snorkeling around the remote island the abundance of sea life is evident right away. With little to no effort stingrays and tortoises can be spotted gliding around on the sea bed.

Masturah Issue 9
Ever wondered how much fun it would be to go on a camping trip where you could experience beautiful landscapes, the sea, wildlife and sports all in one place? Well, wonder no more. Masturah is about 160km north of Jeddah. Known as an eco-friendly attraction of Saudi Arabia, Masturah’s protected mangrove trees along the shoreline play an important part in the local ecosystem.
Abha Issue 10

A day spent exploring old mud-brick villages, breathing refreshing mountain air, absorbing the rich cultural heritage, and taking cable-car rides in Abha are just some of the experiences that make this capital city of the Asir province one of Saudi Arabia’s must-visit places; especially in summertime when the Abha Festival is in full bloom. Located at 2.2km above sea
level, Abha enjoys a mild climate throughout the year while rain drenches its fertile soil, contributing to the scenic beauty of the area.

ATHR Gallery:
“Go Beyond” Exploring The Soul Through Art By DJ Staff
Photos coutesty of ATHR Gallery
Starting from Nov. 15 - Dec. 16 the ATHR Gallery will present their second group exhibition titled “Go Beyond” featuring several Saudi sculptures of varying styles.
26 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The gallery centers around the idea of breaking traditional cultural barriers of lines, colors and shapes in order to gain a better understanding of our fears and anxieties. One of the many artists participating is Saddek Wasil, a Saudi sculptor. His powerful sculptures exuberate a rejection of binding stereotypes, an iron will to defeat material subjugation to achieve spiritual freedom. His artwork is not to be understood as a present state; it holds the promise of future success in rising above materialism. His work has been exhibited around the world from the UK to Syria to Dubai to Senegal as well as many other countries. Another artist participating in the exhibition is Hussein Al-Mohasen, who in his series Jassad (soul) used his work to explore the inner soul. No two souls are the same and he uses his work with an explosion of rich colors to demonstrate how every soul is in constant flux from its environment. In 2001 he was awarded the First prize Assafir competition in Riyadh and in 2003 he won first place in the General Presidency of Youth Welfare competition in Dammam. His work has been exhibited in Kuwait, Bahrain, Dubai and as far as China. One of the more dramatic exhibitions comes from Lebanese, Charles Khoury with his series titled Creatures. These intimidating beasts stare out and seem to solicit compassion for their perpetually dark personalities, almost begging for light to pierce inward. His work has also been exhibited around the world from Egypt to the UK to the Ivory Coast. In 2008 he was awarded the first place at the Sursock Museum. Nov. 15th – Dec 16th Hours: 9AM – 3PM Saturday – Thursday Location: ATHR Gallery, 5th floor Business Centre, Wing B. Serafi Mega Mall, Prince Mohammed Abdul Aziz, Tahlia St., Jeddah, K.S.A. Wordbeat:
Earthly and soulful music at the US Consulate
Critically acclaimed American musical group Wordbeat, presented an inspirational musical evening at the US Consulate in Jeddah organized by the Cultural Affairs Office on Oct. 27th. Both musicians singer/actor Charles Williams and fusion percussionist Tom Teasley, straight from Virginia, combined poetry and melodies in a refreshingly spiritual East meets West style. At first glance, Louisiana-born Charles Williams comes across as another gospel voice; Tom Teasley, a vibrant instrumental player with an assortment of ancient and modern toys at his disposal: a juggler really. Once they opened with ‘Tambourines’ – a mix of poetry with different world rythms and William’s thundering voice booming from behind the crowd – it was obvious that the duo is the product of a more profound cultural and diverse universal dialogue. For the first time in Jeddah – and fresh from a tour in Bahrain, Dhahran and Riyadh – Williams showcased the true meaning of cultural immersion. Influenced by 1920’s 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Harlem Renaissance jazz poet and novelist Langston Hughes, the pair offered inventive and enthralling beats. Running just over an hour, it was clear that Teasley’s musical maneuvering of his instruments was to “ensure a musical continuum and homogenous melody from sounds around the world,” Teaseley said. Word-Beat’s synergy is compelling. Their sound off-beat and fluid. You can be in India, Africa, Europe or here. You would still relate. Their charm is that they are travelling nomads, redefining how individuals should connect with one another.
Wedad Charity Foundation:
Giving orphans a real chance By Lama Kiyasseh
Hidden inside the Jeddah Atelier, the Wedad Charity Foundation (WCF) hosted a vibrant art exhibition for the first ten days of November, with proceeds directed towards its cause. With over 30 oil painted canvases, renowned and critically acclaimed Saudi artist Taha Al-Sabban inaugurated the first evening under the patronage of the Minister of Social Affairs, Yousef Abdullah Al-Othaimeen, and organization founder, Hussein Bahri. While Al-Sabban’s colorfully abstract art reflected the Hijazi culture, the main focus of his 13 solo exhibits was the Wedad Charity Foundation founded in 2008 – the first of its kind in the Kingdom. Founded on the principle of establishing a system that oversees children abandoned at birth. Set within a walkway-style gallery, the artist’s soulful work resonated with the charity’s message of “walking hand-in-hand with the child from birth until death,” similar to that of a family. Bahri said he set up the WCF to move towards finding a workable solution to the ongoing newborn crisis. “There are currently millions of low-income employees working within the Kingdom contributing to some level of familial disruption which needs to be tackled,” he said. Following teachings from Islam, Bahri said the charity’s objective is to integrate these newborns into families, despite the on-going social stigma against them. Apartments are set-up with caretakers to
give the children a stable environment until they are placed appropriately with families. Bahri, drawing on personal experience in the poultry business, referenced the system to that of “growing chicks within a farm and the need to supply a manual to those looking after them,” to ensure healthy development. Although only established six months ago the foundation is looking to expand regionally. Addressing the issue is key to perhaps mitigating the problem and encouraging the local community to take steps towards accepting this program. The Wedad Charity Foundation should be applauded for taking this innovative approach, and keeping this important national conversation open and ongoing for future generations.

Little Book: Making Reading
FUN
By Syed Shabbir Siraj
A friendly, warm environment and plenty of quality reading material tailored for children make Little Book a bookstore that is unlike any other in the city; giving children and their parents a place to enjoy quality time together all the while nurturing a love for books. Established in January of 2008, Little Book prides itself as being the first specialty bookstore for children in Jeddah. Maali Khashoggi, Little Book’s managing director and co-owner, conceptualized the store during her stay in the USA.
“I got inspired while living in the States with my husband and children. We enjoyed taking our kids to bookstores and reading to them ever since they were babies,” Khashoggi said. The charm of the bookstore lies in its colorful and fun branding as well as its kid-friendly interior featuring a faux-tree taken straight from their logo. The shelves are packed with English and Arabic books giving young readers a wide variety of fun-

filled stories and activity books to stimulate their developing minds. Every Thursday there is a weekly story-telling session held in English and Arabic making it a worthwhile effort and giving the bookstore the air of a learning center. What is also exciting is that authors of children’s books are given an opportunity to meet with their little readers at book signings arranged by the store. From organizing book fairs in schools to stocking many of its exclusive titles and new releases, Little Book is growing and opened a kiosk in the Red Sea Mall and a second branch in Stars Avenue Mall inaugurated on Oct. 26. Opening the doors of the largest dedicated store in the Middle-East By Michael Bou-Nacklie
On Oct. 27, Rubaiyat inaugurated its newest store to bring more luxury to Jeddah, in a much larger space.
32 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The new store, roughly three times the size of the previous store in the same center, said Abdullah Binzager, president of Rubaiyat, Gucci agent for Saudi Arabia. He said the previous store was so small only a few customers could shop at once. “This store has the latest designs from Gucci, the Frida design, which is the first change since Tom Ford left,” Binzager said at the opening ceremony of the store. “There are only nine other stores in the world and the only other store in the Middle-East is the one that just opened in Dubai Mall.” The Frida design is the brain child of Gucci’s Creative Director, Frida Giannini, who started with Gucci as a handbag designer in 2002. In 2005 she was named creative director of Gucci Women’s ready-to-wear overseeing all accessories. As creative director, she has been the driving force behind getting major celebrities like Drew Barrymore and James Franco for various advertising campaigns.

Accompanying the Italian Consul General Adriano Maria Santacesaria, the ribbon cutting ushered in a new day for Gucci in Saudi Arabia. The new location, radiating warm brown and gold tones, is Gucci’s chance to give its competitors a run for their money. “When we opened, there was no Chanel, there was no Burberry, there was no Dior. So it was important as they opened, and with bigger stores, that we have to have a store with the same prestige level as the other brands.”

TechTamer’s Gadgets
Hi, TechThamer here. I love gadgets and new technology designed to make everything a little bit easier. From Star Wars toasters to the latest smartphones, I’m all over it. If it blinks, bleeps or whistles I’ve probably seen it and played with it a little. Here’s a small selection of stuff that’s caught my eye this month. Check back next month for a sneak peak at flying cars and solar powered jackets ;) .
Duck Hunt Live - SR115 No more going up to the screen and cheating in Duck Hunt. Now with Duck Hunt Live should be as entertaining as the classic NES game was (and still is). It’s simple, point the infrared gun and shoot the mechanical duck as it flies through the air.

Zune HD – SR1,000 Know someone who hates Apple? Well the Zune HD is pretty much the best thing out there and certainly kicks some iPod butt with its built in HD radio, 720p video input and a gorgeous OLED screen. It’s faster, it’s smarter and the best part is that it’ll play any file your iPod can (granted its not protected by iTunes). This bad boy can also handle HD video up to 720p, take that iPod!
Sidewinder X8 - SR300 For PC gamers, the mouse is an important accessory. For years, wireless mice have been ignored thanks to lag, but the current crop of mice finally has the goods to hang with their wired cousins. The Sidewinder X8 is one of the best, offering up speedy response time, long battery life and comfy ergonomics. 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Motorola Droid – SR750 Sure you think your blackberry is cool, you ain’t seen nothing yet!!! Here comes the Motorolla Druid, something to give iPhone users something more to hate. Not out in the Middle-East yet, it’s pretty impressive. The Doid is the second generation of the Android G1 phone from Google launched last year and with its new updated mobile operating system its got me jumping in my seat (from excitement not from electric shocks). Coupled with its industrial ‘I’m cool and I don’t care what you other phone looks like’ design the Droid is one mean mother we can’t wait to get our hands on.
HP TouchSmart 600 - SR5,000 The new iMac is nice and all, but try poking it in the face and see what happens. Here, I’ll spoil it for you: Nothing. The HP TouchSmart 600 isn’t perfect, but its multitouch media capabilities offer a wow factor no Mac desktop can boast. And that’s what it is now—there’s no telling what developers will do with Windows 7’s integrated touch. Plus, it’s comparatively cheaper, spec for spec, than the iMac, and you can get a Blu-ray drive built-in.

KENZO:
Sprouting new roots at
Le Chateau By DJ Team
After taking over from Kenzo Takada, Antonio Marras’ latest designs at Kenzo are set to the illusion of a golden disk hanging heavily over the Sahara. The vision is rich with nomadic imagery, with models wrapped up in Arab inspired looks; a fusion between the Japanese and Arabian culture. Saudi Arabia’s Kenzo boutique is the first flagship store to open with the new Antonio Marras concept. The flower being the essence of the new concept design protruding subtly as elegant white flowers flow in and out of the crisp, white walls. Not only is this a stirring visual but it adds more of the same elegant flavor we have come to know and love of Kenzo. The new collection is a Russian inspiration from the famous love story of Doctor Zhivago. The collection features bright colors, and floral patterns mixed with a military touch of the Russian inspiration. The babushka dolls play a significant role and add a sense of playfulness to the collection. This kind of multi-cultural fashion synthesis is ideal for a city like Jeddah which is quintessentially one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse fashion hubs in the world. Special Places
Looking Back at
Special Places
One of our signature features is special places where we highlight and discover different communities in urban Jeddah. As part of our wrapping up for 2009 we selected from previous coverage some of our favorite places around the city.
Al-Balad Old Town
AL-BALAD NIGHTS BEFORE EID - Vendors are scattered all over Al-Balad in the last week of Ramadan, selling candies and different kinds of sweets for the Eid festivities. Other stalls sell cheap clothes and leather goods. One should not go to Al-Balad without eating Balela (a snack of
Baab Makkah
From its humble beginnings as a fishing village to a fort and now a bustling metropolis holding on to its old traditions while keeping up with the rest of the world. Souks, the traditional marketplaces of the Middle-East, dot Jeddah’s busy shopping districts adding to the city’s character and charm.
Afghani Souk
Amidst buildings that are themselves of an antique nature, the district of Al-Hendaweyyah is akin to a vein, just one of many, that give this old part of Jeddah city its charm and its visitors a blissful shopping experience. 46 DESTINATION JEDDAH
cooked chickpeas topped with spices, vinegar and pickles), another intresting experience is watching the fresh Kebdah (Liver) vendors cooking in the open air. You will see most Jeddawis, rich and poor, all enjoying the whole the same meal.
Yemeni Market
Thursday morning is the best time to pick up fresh flowers and place your orders for special occasions with local vendors at the market. Most days after 5 PM, the Yemeni market is bustling with neighbors picking up vegetables, fruits, spices or a quick meal after a busy day. Thursday Open Market: 9AM-2PM.
Bangala Fish Market
Fishing is one of Jeddah’s oldest industries, and the Red Sea still fuels the port city’s landmark fish market. Bangala fish market is located south of Corniche, across the harbor from the Islamic port of Jeddah. Each morning before dawn, boatloads of fresh fish are delivered to the market’s auction blocks. Fish is auctioned in mass to restaurants, hotels and other local businesses, or sold throughout the day by vendors in the market’s many booths.
South Asian Market
Jeddah has always welcomed people from countries across the globe, providing a rich blend of culture and traditions. Immigrants that have settled in the city over the years have been able to develop their own local niche, shape their surroundings to create their own cultural environment, and consequently build themselves a home away from home. One such area is the district of Aziziah where you can sample the diverse cultures of Pakistan and India summed up in that 16 sq km stretch of land.

Night Delight: The Red Sea’s Dark Secret
By Hans Sjoeholm
Jeddawis are have endless opportunities to dive after work, or for the extra energetic ones, a predawn dive to start off on the right foot (fin) before a new day of work.
Groups of surgeonfish are seldom seen during the day, when they wake up at dawn they are seen swimming together on the reef walls before they return to their individual grazing areas up on the reef crest.
A great time to see plenty of life is just before the sun drops below the horizon. You can see the busy dayshift of coral reef fish doing the change over with the night attendants of the coral reef community. You are privileged to have a first row experience and not as, most of the world population, only have access to this aquatic realm through TV documentaries. Experience tranquility and peace of mind as you glide peacefully through the water, 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH
it is exhilarating yet surprisingly calm and relaxing at the same time. Practice peak performance buoyancy control to get the most enjoyment of the dive, admire the colors of the reef creatures and coral structures, watch the living coral feeding with extended polyps and realize that they are very much living creatures and not just a dead rock. Ever woken up in the middle of the night and managed to find your way into the
kitchen in darkness? Being familiar with a dive location can be as beneficial so it is good practice to dive it during the day, get the compass out and sketch the area on a slate to prepare for your best ever night diving experience. Attach chemical light sticks to your air tank and carry back–up lights in case of a light failure and as always share your dive in a close proximity with a competent dive buddy. Here is the fun part, turn the flashlight out to experience fire works of sparkling colors of blue and green as you swish your fingers through the rich water. Bioluminescence is
emitted from single-celled algae known as dinoflagellates. Many dinoflagellate species are bioluminescent, emitting bright flashes of light at night in response to agitation. This is something that also can be experienced when taking a boat ride at night and you see the water flows and glows around the boat. It is amazing to be able to see the moon and to be able to use it as natural navigation aids whilst diving. At night parrotfish can be seen sleeping in exactly the same spot squeezed in its private coral bed many times encompassed in a cocoon of corals.
Stonefish sit camoflagued on the coral reef waiting for unsuspecting The highly light-sensitive black or beige colored basket stars, perched on top lunch to swim by and not notice them staring out into the sea. of the reef sometimes reaching a width of up to 1m, are amazing to watch as they quickly collapse to a small ball as soon as you shine the light on them.
The Spanish Dancer (Hexabranchus sanguineus) lays its eggs in a ribbon formation and leaves it on the corals for safe keeping.
The Spanish Dancer is a form of sea slug which slithers slowly across the corals with its feathery gills protruding from its rear section.
Parrotfish can be seen sleeping in the same spot squeezed in its coral The Electric Leopard Torpedo Ray (Torpeda panthera) who stun their tiny bed many times encompassed in a cocoon of mucus secreted by the fish. pray with a powerful jolt may be seen swimming along the bottom
DESTINATION JEDDAH 55
The sandy bottom may be full of nocturnal crabs, shells, shrimps, octopus and sleeping fish not found during the day. On the reef walls you may find many coral shrimps and cuttlefish changing color trying to blend in with the reef. Behind the sea urchins you may find dancing shrimps and tiny cuttlefish. On every divers wish list is to see a Spanish dancer (Hexabranchus sanguineus) and their eggs laid out as pinkish ribbons. A really lucky diver might even get to spot the tiny Periclimenes Imperator shrimp, usually found near the feathery gills of the mollusk. Plenty of Red Sea needlefish (Tylosurus choram) may be attracted to the surface light and can easily be seen by snorkeling at night. The beautiful but venomous Clearfin Lionfish are frequently seen hunting at night and sometimes in certain locations the common lionfish may follow you and start hunting in your torch light. The electric Leopard torpedo ray (Torpeda panthera) who stun their tiny pray with a powerful jolt may be seen swimming along the bottom and if your timing is right you might even see a moray eel catching a sleeping surgeonfish. The Striped Eel Catfish (Plotosus lineatus) with its venomous pectoral and first dorsal fin, whilst still in the juvenile stage, form dense-ball shaped schools franticly searching the reef for food. Scorpion fish and stonefish are also easy to spot as they many times display a reddish hue at night.
Beware of cone shells; never pick them up since they are highly venomous. Try to spot some of the common fish you see in the daytime, such as Anthias, Picassos, Damselfish and others and you will be surprised to see how well hidden they are at night. The less you swim – the more you get to see. Some reef sections you may have quickly swam past during the day will now during a slow illuminated macro observation dive provide many new creature discoveries exhibiting vibrant colors, will become unforgettable reef tales to bring home to your friends and family. 56 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The Striped Eel Catfish (Plotosus lineatus) with its venomous pectoral and first dorsal fin, whilst still in the juvenile stage, form dense-ball shaped schools franticly searching the reef for food.
Coral polyps (Lobophyllia hemprichii) bloom in the night light gently sifting through the sea silt while they rest on the coral reef.
Remember that we are visitors to the reef, do not disturb and show all the creatures the respect they deserve to have. Learn more about the inhabitants and night diving techniques in a night, navigation, or underwater naturalist diving specialty.

Isabella’s: The Stuff of Dreams
NE

Hidden behind Sierra compound, two large red tents with a palm tree in the center and glass windows surrounding the base of the tent. As you walk down the narrow walkway, soft grass juts out from the tiles welcoming you to a truly authentic experience of italy without the expense and hassle of airfare. That’s what Isabella’s is at its core, an Italian dining experience which is as authentic as possible. As you push open the wooden Italian-esque doors the cool air inside is quick to welcome you to one of the tables located around the spine of the red canvased tent. Originally named Garbinos and Siciliano until a few months ago, Isabella’s is a complete renaissance of the restaurant. With renovations creating the two outdoor tent patios Isabella’s is truly what it’s name implies, a beauty The restaurant has existed for 8 years but in January of this year, a change in management caused the brand to be given new life. From the expansion to the retraining of his staff to the reconstruction of a wood burning pizza oven Isabella’s is hardly recognizable from its original incarnation. “You won’t find a better fettucine in town, I guarantee it,” said owner and co-founder Bassim Shaikan, while challenging me to taste. Putting it plainly, he was right, making fettucine properly is not difficult but most restaurants in Jeddah proclaiming to have fine Italian food miss out on making this dish properly. The same can be said about the lasagnas and pizzas, Shaikan attributes this to using the freshest ingredients he can find. “My number one concern is the taste of the food, if the food isn’t good then you can’t win
the customer over,” he said with his passion for good food just as visible as the smile on his face. While the food is the driving force behind the customer’s experience Shaikan said, the entire dining experience is also important. Isabella’s has a number of things working in its favor. Other than the food is its location. Although out of the way and not in the trendiest part of town, it is quiet. If that doesn’t seem to make a difference, imagine trying to enjoy a plate of delicious pasta, with traffic zooming by; now try imagining it without traffic. That’s the difference that Isabella’s gives you. The food is both rich in taste, filling but not heavy and you won’t need a nap after three slices of pizza. What sets it apart is one thing and one thing only, the food is made with love; a love for giving customers good food at a decent price in a pleasant atmosphere. Isabella’s is perfect for a young married couple or a family of 5 looking for a night out on the town. Pizza Fusion:

Spicing up pizza with sustainability
Saudi Arabia is not known for its sustainability or its going green lifestyle, but one restaurant hopes to change that through the stomachs of Saudis. With the very first international branch of Pizza Fusion opening up in Jeddah on Oct. 29, locals and expats alike can sink their teeth into some of the very best pizza in town. The American franchise was started 3 years ago by two college friends who wanted to take their love for pizza and make it different. “Like all Americans they love pizza,” laughed Libor Vitu, brand manager for Pizza Fusion. “But they wanted to do something very ecofriendly and do their part to save the earth. They came up with the concept of a menu made up of entirely fully organic foods.” 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Everything from the pizza sauces to the cheese, even the meat is organic. Vitu said the meat comes from organic cage-free farms in the US. Organic food differs from non-organic food by not having any chemicals or hormones added to it, consequently the items do not have as long a shelf-life which makes transAtlantic transportation much more difficult.
Libor Vitu, brand manager for Pizza Fusion discusses how 60 percent of the food is organically produced, free of hormones, steroids and abusive conditions like battery-cage farming.
Rande Samuel, Franchise District Manager, is responsible for monitoring whether the franchise is up to the standards the brand is associated with. The British Virgin Islands born Samuel said he travels to the franchise locations every few months to perform a complete audit of the restaurant.
However the disadvantage to opening in a region which does not have a more pervasive green culture, is that not all the items at the Pizza Fusion can be eco-friendly. “Some of the challenges we have here are that we can’t do it 100 percent organic. So we use 100 percent organic flour and pizza sauce and cheeses shipped from the States are organic,” Vitu said. “I’d say 60 percent of what is served is 100 percent organic.” The non-traditionally shaped pizza is truly one of the best in town with the difference clearly in the taste of the pizza.

On the Border: World’s largest OTB restaurant opens
With one On The Border already open at Red Sea Mall, Arabian Food Supplies and On The Border (OTB) launched their new flagship restaurant branch.
62 DESTINATION JEDDAH
TuckedAway The new outlet located on Andalus street, is the largest in the world measuring 1100 sq m when all other OTB locations are under 1000 sq m. “We’ve had such a good response with our initial location we wanted to expand and make it more accessible,” said Hussam ElNabulsi, general manager of the Hospitality Division for Chili’s and OTB for Arabian Food Supplies. With the Director of the Foreign Affairs Ministry in the Makkah region Mohammed Tayyeb and the Mexican Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Terjo Arturo in tow the newest OTB location opened to a fireworks display on the steps of the franchise with pyrotechnics going off on the roof as well. The restaurant itself is as close as Jeddahwis will come to having an authentic Mexican food dinner. Although still very Tex-Mex in its design and presentation, the intent as well as the ingredients are fresh and full of flavor. With friendly staff, an expansive restaurant, a downstairs play area and a kitchen much larger than its previous location, OTB should be able to keep true to its international dedication to quality dining. Humus Reefi: Mediterranean flavor, Arabian spice
Hidden at the top of Sari st., where Madinah road intersects, the humble Humus Reefi sits quietly as traffic zips by. Inside, its very simple interior reflects what Humus Reefi is all about. Simple food without any distractions. With a menu packed with traditional goodies Humus Reefi has some of the best humus in town. Complete with a rich flavor as well as a velvety texture, its one of those places you go for a traditional and easy meal. One of the items on promotion is the Concrete sandwich, while not exactly the most appetizing name, it is a falafel sandwich packing a punch of flavor. The menu ranges from all the traditional favorites including falafels, foul medames and other staples of Arab cuisine. Humus Reefi lacks an English menu, making it difficult for customers trying to discover a traditional taste tucked away in Jeddah’s busy streets. Despite this it is still a great place to get a great meal at a realistic price. Location: Intersection with Sari st. and Madinah rd. Tel: +966-2-6397773 Al-Safa st. Master Swiss Chocolatier
It all started in a small pastry shop on Markt-
gasse in Zurich’s old town in 1845. Confectioner David Sprüngli-Schwarz and his 29-year-old son Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, who also trained to be a confectioner, dared to do something new: they decided to make chocolate. In particular and in keeping with the new fashion that came from Italy – solid bars – just like François-Louis Cailler in Vevey and Philippe Suchard in Neuchâtel had already done. From its humble beginnings 164 years ago, Lindt chocolate is now produced in six production sites across Europe and two in the US and is distributed on four continents in over 100 countries. The Lindt master chocolatiers design every piece with passion from the finest ingredients to ensure the rich taste and texture in every bite. With different pralines designed to taste best with different types of coffee, Lindt spares no effort in working to create the best taste for everyone. From a box of rich pralines to chocolate shells filled with a creamy delicious center, every Lindt creation is a testament to chocolate perfection.

One of the oldest franchises in the Kingdom, arriving long before any of the other major dining chains, Fuddruckers has undergone several shifts over the last few years. Although service has remained at a somewhat consistent level, the quality of the food has slowly degraded over the last few years. Previously with an order for a burger a customer would be entitled to a side salad, which from a dining perspective is far healthier than a burger on its own. Granted, if you want to eat healthy Fuddruckers isn’t your best bet in the first place. But the salad makes a difference. Additionally many of the ingredients have progressively decreased in quality; from the salads becoming more soiled with sauce, to the burgers becoming greasier and greasier to the chilli-cheese fries manifesting as more cheese than chilli. With new locations open at Roshana Mall and on Andalus fulfilling their purpose as a location for casual family dining, the quality of the actual dining has dropped significantly. For one of the oldest and best known franchises in the country, Fuddruckers should be leading the charge for casual dining while keeping food at an acceptable standard.

Hijrah:
What it was and what it means today By Sameen Anis
Contrary to the upcoming world-wide celebrations ushering in the new Gregorian year 2010, the new Hijrah (the Islamic year) will set in silently yet again. For those who follow the Hijrah calendar, every New Year is still not enough time to remember a history wrought with enlightenment and human sacrifice. Perhaps this is the time to re-instill in ourselves the true spirit of Islam as we move into the future. 72 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Hijrah, or rather Hijri, is an Arabic term literally meaning pilgrimage, migration or journey. Not surprisingly then, the Hijri calendar starts from the year Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) immigrated from Makkah to Madinah. This year is denoted as 1 A.H. or 1 After Hijrah, which in the Gregorian calendar corresponds to 622 A.D. However, the Hijrah calendar itself was developed 17 years after the Prophet’s migration. Umar (May Allah Be Pleased with Him), the second Caliph, felt the need for a calendar system and created an assembly to decide upon the matter. It was Ali (mabph) who suggested that the migration year be adopted as the first year of the new Islamic calendar.
decree in Islam but there is no ruling as to how it should be celebrated. You can have a party and light firecrackers, or fast and participate in congregational prayer or do nothing at all. But on the eve that 1431 A.H. (Dec. 18) begins, it is recommended to try to take some time out to research what the Hijrah truly stands for and how it can be of guidance for the coming year.
Al-Madinah
Early Muslims, along with Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) started to rebel against their persecution in Makkah. Forfeiting their wealth, homes and family ties, they traveled to Madinah so they could practice Islam without the fear of persecution. This mass exodus symbolized the level of conviction early Muslim’s had in order to practice their faith.

Interestingly enough, Muhammad Ilyas, author of “A Modem Guide to Astronomical Calculations of the Islamic Calendar, Times & Qiblah,” quoted Abul Hassan An-Nadwi (an eminent Islamic scholar) who wrote, “(The advent of the fifteenth Islamic century) is indeed, a unique occasion to ponder that the Islamic Era did not start with the victories of Islamic wars, nor with the birth or death of the Prophet (pbuh), nor with the Revelation itself. It starts with Hijrah, or the sacrifice for the cause of Truth and for the preservation of the Revelation. It was a divinely inspired selection. Allah wanted to teach man that the struggle between (Good) and Evil is eternal. The Islamic year reminds Muslims not of the pomp and glory of Islam, but of its sacrifice, and prepares them to do the same.” The significance of the Hijrah could not be defined better than An-Nadwi has already done. Following the lunar calendar is a divine

Rome to Makkah: Promoting intercultural dialogue with gears and tires
By Michael Bou-Nacklie
From Rome to Makkah by bicycle; that’s what a group of 23 cyclists from the Netherlands and Germany, set off to do on Sept. 23. The tour reached Jeddah on Oct. 26, and started their first ride by cruising gently along the Corniche in the early morning cool. The group, many over the age of 60 and in excellent shape, left Rome after an audience with the Pope carrying a letter from him in hand for Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Makkah governor. The purpose of the trip was to travel from the center of Christianity in Rome to the center of Islam to complete “probably the most important pilgrimage you can do,” said Leo Schmidt, one of the day captains of the group. “It’s a pilgrimage of hope and to build a bridge between the religions and cultures of Islam and Christianity.” This trip follows hot on the heels of King Abdullah’s, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, interfaith dialogues aimed at accomplishing the same thing; bringing order to the chaos between religions. Traveling such an immense distance is no small feat, especially given the challenges of the climate and some difficult hilly terrain. 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Therefore prior to the trip, the group endured trial runs to ensure all applicants were up to the challenge. Crossing through Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Jordan, said Schmidt with his heavy Dutch accent through his bristly mustache, the group were not all familiar with one another, but through the arduous riding they all become good friends. Originally conceived as a sponsored cycling trip to Turkey the challenge slowly changed to its current inception of a cross-cultural pilgrimage. To mark the new purpose, their cycling strip prominently included green, the colour of hope and renewal, Schmidt pointed out.
The crowning final 70 km bicycle ride from Jeddah to Makkah was broken up into several stages because of the intense heat. “The distance is not that far, but with this temperature we cannot ride,” Schmidt said. “Instead we ride symbolically while we stay here for four days in Saudi. Every day we like to ride a few kilometers but since it’s so hot it’s impossible to your health.” Due to regulations the cyclists were not allowed to continue all the way into Makkah but their journey of hope continued past the escarpment road to Taif an Al-Baha and later to Bisha. As they cycled down Jeddah’s busy streets, the sight of so many foreigners all cycling together caused an unusual tameness to take over traffic. Cars slowed, camera phones snapped pictures and video. Honks were replied to with friendly waves, as these champions of intercultural mixing pushed on with their message of hope and asambassadors of physical fitness.

Aquabiotec: Cleaner Water For A Greener World Bringing technology from around the world to Saudi Arabia, while good, poses some problems and quite often those same technologies from Europe and the Americas, fail to function properly under the extreme temperature conditions of the Kingdom. When the issue at hand is water purification and treatment it is especially important in a country, which has frequent water shortages throughout the year. A company based in Germany hopes to give the Kingdom a little less to worry about when it comes to water treatment. Described as a “company (specializing) in the production, supply and operation of innovative technologies,” in the treatment of municipal wastewater all in one facility. Using specialized micro-organisms to produce reusable water, the technology uses water stored at a higher temperature, ideal for the harsh desert climate. “Compared with conventional systems Aquabiotec needs lower maintenance and operation efforts,” said Khaled Hashani, the General Director and Owner for Aquabiotec. “(At) the same time Aquabiotec treatment plants are modular and flexible for different hydraulic and organic loads. Today there are more than 500 plants of this type some working (for over) 20 years.” 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH
For consumers he said, this means a reliable technology at a low cost while providing services, which are clean and sustainable. In places like Kuwait, the standard of living and lifestyle has increased rapidly over the last 20 years, mirroring closely what has been happening in the Kingdom. With population booms like these water demand increases making it more and more scarce. “In this context high efficient wastewater treatment and water reclamation technology like Aquabiotec for irrigation, recycling and water reuse (has become) a very important factor for future developments,” Hashani said. The bacteria used in the treatment process breaks down all solids in the water making it safe for reuse in irrigation as well as a range of other uses. Customers benefit by having
a source of clean, reliable and sustainable technology which is safe for the environment. Not only is it safe for use, but the technology has no carbon footprint. Bacteria are driving force behind the process, which means no fossil fuels are used to power the technology. Whatever electrical energy is needed is produced by solar panels mounted on the roof of the plants giving it a positive carbon-footprint rating.
Over the last year several projects, which would benefit from Aquabiotec technology have been identified in the Kingdom, Hashani said. “Approval….is underway and we hope to be able to finalize this shortly as Aquabiotec technology meets the highest International standards,” he said. Aquabiotec technology has already gained approval in the Gulf with two plants in Kuwait and Oman.

Sea of Jeddah in 1931: As seen by Prince Shakib Arslan
By Mahmoud Sabbagh
During the pilgrimage season of 1931, Prince Shakib Arslan (1869-1946) began his Hijazi journey to Mecca from Lausanne, Switzerland. His journey took him to Napoli, Italy to Port Said on the Suez Canal in Egypt and finally to the port of Rabigh Miqat which lead to the Jeddah’s port. Arslan was a druze prince originating from Lebanon and was commonly known as Amir al-Bayān (Prince of Eloquence). To Arslan, Ottomanism and Islam were closely bound together and the reform of Islam would naturally lead to the revival of the Ottoman Empire. Arslan was exiled from Lebanon by French Mandate authorities which occupied Lebanon at the time, he acted as a the unofficial representative of Syria and Palestine at the League of Nations and was an avid writer for daily Arab periodicals. The night before they docked at the Jeddah port, they watched dawn cover the night sky. No sooner did the sunlight bath the nearby Hijazi mountains in a morning glow did voices ring out “voices were raised loud zoom and praise and come into contact with dignity and reverance, joy, enjoy access to the purest and most sacred spot.” «When it was the fourth day of Dhu al-Hijjah the ship entered Jeddah port, in a slow careful way,” the Prince said. “Because this call of the mountains and rocks that are almost floating out from the tossing sea, and you can see fifteen parked ships in the port on the different dimensions of the land.” Arslan said the sea really took his heart and the glimmering landscape deeply impacted him for his entire life. 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Prince Shakib Arslan
«I have sailed in most of the global seas; I have visited the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea, La Manche channel, and the Atlantic Ocean, but there was nothing like the view of the Sea Jeddah”. Arslan wrote. “Wherever you look left or right, You see long threads in the sea composing a wide rainbow of multiple colors; red, blue, purple and reddish, orange and green lines, etc. .. like a peacocks feathers no difference between them, but the fact that these feathers pulling in a very great sea extends hundreds of meters and features dozens of them.” Amazed by the sight, he said nobody could ever become bored of looking at the Jeddah coast. He asked his ship captain if this sight was unique to the Red Sea port and the captain replied that such a beautiful scene is reserved solely to the Jeddah Port. He also explained to Arslan that the reason for its vivid colors was due in part to the shallowness of the Red Sea, the rich coral reefs ecology located just close to the surface which helps reflecting sunlight and give the Red Sea its unique colorings. When Arslan settled in Jeddah he was amazed by its unique architectural features - which still mark the modern Jeddah cityscape. One feature is the design of the wooden “Rawasheen” dangling outside the old houses’ windows. Arslan paid the most attention to Old Jeddah’s homes just like his counter visitor to Jeddah; “Colonel Lawrence” (Lawrence of Arabia) did few years before Arslan’s visit! Official directions of how to best utilize
To enjoy DJ to its fullest, here are some suggestions for locations to keep and carry a copy of the magazine:
At Home: Have DJ help you during awkward pauses when you have guests over or over the phone. Refer to DJ for conversational topics and interesting tid-bits about events and announcements in town. Shake well before use In The Office: Lost all the menus for places that deliver? Pick up DJ and use its handy directory for everything delicious that can be brought to you. Flip through the Red Sea Coast section and find your next diving trip to make the strangers in your office a little less strange. Store in cool space In the Car: Tired of driving while everyone in your car fights to decide where to eat? Keep it tucked away in your backseat as your reference on the go of where to get your food fix. Shake twice before opening In your Handbag/briefcase: Its small, its handy and its soft to the touch. Thanks to the invention of paper you can carry DJ wherever you go, stuck at the dentists? Pull out some DJ. Stuck outside during prayer time? Find out what other people are doing while you’re stuck with DJ. Waiting for rescue in the middle of nowhere cause you didn’t read DJ’s quick tips on how to have a safe desert outing? Read DJ until the helicopters arrive. This side up Under your pillow: EEver wake up in the middle of the night craving some Taa-meya? Odds are the shops probably closed, or it will be once you get out of your pj’s, but you can highlight the number for the place for use first thing in the morning.
WARNING: Side effects of DJ include: Activities, a desire to go out, a need to go diving, the inexplicable urge to go to tucked away restaurants.
If symptoms do not occur consult your doctor.
