EDITORIAL EDITOR -IN-CHIEF
As the lights of Ramadan fade out and the dawn of a new Eid breaks, one is left with mixed emotions. A sense of renewed excitement and anticipation of Eid is mixed with a feeling of loss. Ramadan is like a nice visitor that comes and enchants us with its presence, then quickly disappears, leaving us nostalgic until next year. This Ramadan, Jeddah was at its best for tourists from all over the world. Many came to enjoy what Jeddah has to offer as they made their journey to visit the holy places. Eid has arrived with all its splendors. Its main event is the congregational prayers by sunrise, Thousands of people take part in Eid prayers performed on open grounds and at mosques all around the city. Young boys wear traditional clothes, and girls dress up in new, long dresses. After prayer, the whole family gathers at the eldest family member’s house for a breakfast feast, or they might set off to one of many local hotels that serve elaborate breakfast buffets. These buffets are so popular that many people reserve their tables as early as the beginning of Ramadan. Everyone is dressed in new clothes as they enjoy fresh baked mamool (pastries filled with mashed dates), chocolate, candies and special Eid sweets. Older family members give Eiddeyah (money) to the young ones and share gift baskets of candy. People celebrate Eid in many ways. This year a lot of events are taking place around the city. The Obhur festival will include many water activities, such as diving, jet skiing, boat racing and an opensea family fishing competition. There will also be a Formula 2000 race. Spectacular fireworks along the Corniche, folklore performers, concerts and other recreational programs also provide reasons for all to enjoy this holiday. IN THE SPOT LIGHT
WHO: Louay Hamam Tarabzooni THE ENTERPRISE: A Jeddah-based full service financial consultancy established three years ago. THE INFLUENCES: Educational experiences in several countries started for Tarabzooni with elementary school in Spain; middle school in Italy; high school in Riyadh and his education in business administration at King Abdul Aziz University, Jeddah. Job experience with NCB bank in the financial consultancy department channeled critical thinking, developed business best practices and encouraged entrepreneurship. New financial reforms and the establishment of the Capital Market Authority (CMA) encouraged Tarabzooni to form a financial consultancy to aid young businesses in Jeddah. HOW HE SPENDS HIS TIME: Family comes first for Tarabzooni. He is a proud father to daughters Layal and Leena and son Hamam. Community is another priority. As a member of the Young Businessmen Committee (JCCI) he organized the successful Business Youth Exhibition 2008 where committee volunteers supported and provided investment consultation to young entrepreneurs. Work is always on his mind, but he tries to stick to a Saudi business week — 6 days with half a day Thursdays. FAVORITES TO SHARE: Red Sea Mall shopping offers something for everyone. Tarabzooni’s daughters prefer Moon Toon amusement at Al Serafi Mega Mall. Tarabzooni recommends Lallo’s for Italian cuisine; the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Khalideya district; Yildizlar’s off Andalus on Al Maady Street for true Lebanese food. PROJECTS OUTSIDE THE 9-5 Tarabzooni helped organize the Business Youth Exhibition this year. Jeddah’s young entrepreneurs had an opportunity to network, meet and strengthen entrepreneurial spirit with like-minded small- and mediumsize enterprises. Under the patronage of HRH Prince Khalid Al Faisal, Prince of the Makkah region, the exhibit halls were staged and organized for success. More than 300 participants set up trade booths showcasing their products, services and new business concepts over four days in July. The JCCI’s intention was to create an environment, in professional tradeshow format, where like-minded entrepreneurial and self-employed small businesses are encouraged to develop their skills and learn about each other. Trade booths were set up and manned by employees and volunteers alike, and attendees included high-ranking ministers, corporate executives, youth leaders, mentoring advisors and sponsors for entrepreneurial projects.

The day stared out with a meeting at Al Attalah Center on Corniche Drive. The Destination Jeddah team gathered with kids, back packs, snacks and water, and then we settled into our small roomy van that seats 12. With a special invitation to visit the new equestrian center development, we decided to make it into a day trip. We had a great time and we all played tour guide and told stories of past trips to Taif.

Once settled into our seats, we took to the
road. Our early morning start meant that we didn’t drive in high heat. Everyone was dressed for comfort and Yousef, the youngest, was ready with his cowboy hat and enthusiasm. The adults did a road trip check: cell phones, maps, water and proper ID. We knew there were limited family-oriented roadside stops on the way, so everyone was prepared. On The Road: 2.5 hours, 1 Check Point, 1 Map Check-Once we closed the doors to the van we all started talking about Taif and who’s been there lately, what it used to be like, and who has been horseback riding before. The Growing City of Taif: 2-3 hours outside Jeddah, the hills of Taif offer cooler temperatures, more greenery and new developments to attract tourists. As the historical gateway to Makkah from the Arabian interior, the city now quietly stands as a reminder of one of the Kingdom’s most important historical sites.Taif is a well-preserved example of quaint Arabian cities of old, and it boasts a handful of tourist attractions. jobs and projects. Now with ongoing developments and the establishment of the Al Massarrah International Equestrian center, just a few kilometers outside of the city proper, Taif and the surrounding hills will be enlivened with a new sport, recreation and resortlike attractiveness. Ideally, the comprehensive development plans will preserve and promote Taif’s existing attractions and develop new economic job opportunities. Visitors plan day trips or weekend getaways to the “Garden of Hejaz,” a nickname the city has earned over the years. It’s hard to visit all the attractions and outdoor activities in one day, so create your agenda for lunch and a tour.
The Intercontinental Hotel in Taif is a popular hotel for overnight stays and extra time, early or late, allows for a stroll around the Taif Souq renowned for its friendly vendors and shopkeepers. If you don’t make it to the souq, stop by one of the fruit vendors streetside. Pomegranates, prickly pears, fresh cheese, flowers, honey and camel switches are treasured buys. August through October is a great time to visit.

THE TAIF MUSEUM This museum is a wonderful addition to the city because of its traditional rustic fortress look. Our tour with Mr. Jawad was short, but our group now has a reason to return. The one floor sprawling structure was built by personal efforts. The open entrance walls are covered with early 1950s dallahs and tea pots cover the walls as well as family utensils for cooking and preparing family meals. Solid woodbeamed ceilings and doors with cylindrical stone towers give the foyer and main show-
rooms a traditional cozy feel. Displays of rifles, knives and traditional costumes adorn the main rooms. An authentic outdoor souq is set up off the main room through the hallway, complete with souq shops and replicas of the past including a barber shop, carpet stall and perfumery where rose oils are on dislplay. The museum has received generous support and contributions since opening earlier this year. This museum, with a home-like feel, offers a peak into rooms revealing past heritage of Saudi Arabia and the region. DESTINATION JEDDAH 13
THE EQUESTRIAN LIFE
The Al Massarrah International Equestrian Center is an ongoing, massive development materializing at great speed. Its green landscaping is lush in completed sections where a golf cart is needed to get around. A drive through the tree-shaded mini ‘ChampsElyse’ named section is breathtaking and quite a change of experience from the drive on the highway to Taif. It is sort of a new oasis for the future from my perspective.
Drive Ways inside the Equestrian Center ( mini ‘Champs-Elyse’ )
The proprietor, Dr. Turki ibn Mohammed As-Sedairy, envisioned such a place more than 20 years ago. Completed in stages over the years, the equestrian center is home to an elite selection of horses, trainers and grounds that are positioned to be an event site for world-class championship competitions. Five-star cottage villa-style facilities—the stables—for breeding, training and caring for the horses are about sixty percent complete.(Cont.)

August is Camel Race Month in Taif by Jessica Stockwell
The camel races that take place in Taif every August are more remindful of and true to the spirit of ancient Bedouin traditions. Camel herds, with their handlers and Caretakers, roam the area and settle in for the month, much like times past. Folklore and tales tell a story of tribal leaders calling for camel races to celebrate particular events, like weddings or the birth of a son. All make for an occasion to get together and have some sportive fun. Modern Times: In a modern description, it’s like an outdoor camel convention for a month and tourists are invited to view from the side rail, at the start line at race time, from 3 to 6 pm.
Over time, discretely and unceremoniously marked desert area just outside the Okaz Souq in Taif, has become the home of camel racing in Saudi Arabia. Uncommercial and not glitzy by t.v. standards, it’s fascinating, authentic and a bit dusty. If you missed it this year, mark your calendars for next year. Ramadan & Eid Thobes by Layla Mossallem
The traditional long-sleeved dresses worn by women have come back into the closets of young Saudi women with a vengeance. Thobes are never more popular than during Ramadan and Eid since the Holy Month brings a special feeling that is enhanced by traditional attire. The spirituality of Ramadan is something that has encouraged women to wear thobes, as Islam advises wearing decent, modest and unrevealing clothing. But women’s thobes are no longer a style only for Bedouin. Even teenagers, who usually wear casual clothes year-round, turn their attention to thobes during Ramadan and Eid, and head off to the boutiques in search of the latest thobe designs.

FASHION & SHOPPING
Thobes have become all the rage with the fashion-savvy ladies of Jeddah. They wait for the Holy month and Eid to get specially designed thobes that will add excitement to their nighttime wardrobe. Many Saudi designers create special seasonal collections that incorporate thobes and kaftans of every imaginable design. From the simple monotone to the bizarre multicolored, these thobes cater to all tastes and budgets. The range of themes to choose from is never-ending. From traditional Arabic designs with jingling Egyptian medallions to web-like Moroccan crochet. From Chinese silk, to Japanese kimono style, to Indian Sari fabrics, thobes have become collectors’ items. From rock-and-roll studded thobes with hoods to baby doll thobes with pink feathers, there’s one for every personality. Lavish designs with hand embroidery and beads can really take your breath away, not to mention your savings.
The style in this thobe is taken from old traditional Hejazi outfits, made of pure cotton.
There are even thobe sets for husbands and wives, and matching sets for mothers and daughters. There is an addictive quality to thobes too. No matter how many thobes you already have from previous Ramadan and Eid collections, there will always be that one special thobe that you are hunting for. There are as many different ways to wear a thobe as there are women. Both formally and casually, it gives a conservative and chic look. It is comfortable, feminine, and always gives a longer more elegant silhouette. Flexibility is key. You can pray in it, sleep in it, go out in it, and sit cross-legged in it. And don’t forget the most important practical use for the thobe: Covering up the extra kilos gained during Ramadan!
Made from a combination of three different materials and can be worn as shown, or loosely in a more conservative atmosphere. 28 DESTINATION JEDDAH
The thobe creates a kind of intimacy and a sense of bonding among family members, and among society as a whole. It represents unity and celebrates a proud heritage that is passed on from generation to generation, and which the youth have embraced and made their own.

Thobe Revolution
A thobe was once a thobe... nothing but traditional clothing worn by Saudi men. But that plain white thobe has now revolutionized into something very modern and different from thobes of the past. Saudi designers are aware of the new generation’s need to keep up with fashion trends, so they have converted that plain white thobe into something cool and unique, without tearing it away from its traditional roots. Now young men can wear the traditional thobe in different styles, designs and colors. From funky to classic, they can express their individuality and style through the material and design. This trend, most popular in the western region of Saudi Arabia, appeals to the new generation, but many older men are also embracing this new concept of thobes. 30 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Fasting and Feasting Health Habits by Layla Mossallem
Ramadan and Eid represent two very different dietary patterns. The faithful fast all day during Ramadan, and enjoy festivities and good food during Eid. Fasting during Ramadan is a practice of self-discipline for the mind, body and spirit. Eid is a time to enjoy yourself with friends and family. With such a broad spectrum of eating habits, the season presents an opportunity to either make or break a healthy lifestyle. By making a few healthy choices, you can improve not only your spiritual well-being, but also your physical health during these holy days.
DESTINATION JEDDAH 33
HEALTHY LIVING
During Ramadan and Eid, your diet should not differ much from your normal diet. The diet should allow you to maintain your normal weight. Many people lose their way and indulge in too much food. They turn their Ramadan fast into a feast and they pay the price. Attending Iftars and other social engagements is distracting to some. Overindulging in such affairs contradicts the teachings of moderation that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) emphasized as the essential pillar of fasting. Practicing Ramadan properly means practicing self-awareness and moderation.

Dates are a perfect way to break the fast. Mentioned in the Holy Quran

The body gains renewed vigor within half an hour of eating a few dates. The date has been mentioned in the Holy Quran 20 times, thus showing its importance. Dates are the perfect way to break the fast because the sugar content and the ease of its digestion appease the feeling of hunger. The shortage of sugar in the body is the main factor that contributes to hunger pangs, and not an empty stomach as is often assumed. After half an hour of eating a few dates the body regains a renewed vigor.

Eid Traditions by Haneefah al Amreekiyyah
Eid Al-Fitr is a three-day Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. The name means “feast of the breaking of the fast. Although it is called “the smaller Eid,” it is considered by many Muslims to be the bigger celebration. For Muslims the world over, Eid is a blessed and joyous occasion. From preparing festive dishes to donning new clothes, the excitement of Eid can be sensed all around us.

Eid Prayer Traditions On the first morning of Eid, the faithful report very early to prayer. Rewards that come with Eid prayer and can be reaped with correct intentions and actions that are in accordance with the Quraan and Sunnah. Allaah has said, “Verily Allaah only accepts the actions of the Muttaqeen.”
It is written, on the day of Fitr (Eid), once the people gather to perform the prayer, Allaah will look at them and say, “Oh my servants, verily for Me you fasted, and for Me you stood in prayer! Return (to your homes), indeed your sins are forgiven.” Eid Festivities
After the morning prayer, everyone returns At the sighting the Moon of Shawwa, the muez- home to celebrate the end of the fast with zin increases recitation of the Takbeer, repeating the first daylight meal in a month. Then most people will visit family and friends, exchange the words “Allaah is the Greatest,” “There is gifts, and celebrate with renewed vigor. Many none truly worthy of worship except Allaah,” people see Eid as an opportunity to start fresh, and “All Praise is for Allaah.” treating themselves to new clothes or accessories. The evening sky is often lit by firework Before walking to the mosque for Eid prayer, displays, and everyone enjoys traditional Eid the Prophet would bathe and the Companions dishes, chocolates, and other sweets. It is a time would were their best clothes. The female Companions would borrow each other garments for being together with friends and family, and for appreciating some of the things that were if they did not have anything to wear. It is also missed during Ramadan. said that Allaah’s Messenger never proceeded for the prayer (Eid al Fitr) unless he had eaten Many people see Eid as an opan odd number of dates. On the way to prayer, it is Sunnah to say takbeer audibly when leaving home, repeating it until the prayer starts. It is preferable to pray the Eid prayer on open ground and not at the mosque if possible. The words are: Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, Laa ilaahaa ilallaah. Allaahu Akbar, Allaahu Akbar, wa lillaahil hamd. With these things in mind, the faithful still practice grooming, eat dates, and recite the Takbeer as they begin Eid with prayer. Women, the elderly and children all come out for Eid Prayer. It is traditional to take a different route home, for it is said that on the day of Eid, the Prophet would return from the Eid prayer on a different route than that by which he came. Charity and Seeking Forgiveness Muslims conclude the month of Ramadan with charity and istighfaar, or the seeking of forgiveness. Charity earns the fasting person purification from misdeeds, and istighfaar mends the fault caused by actions that harm one’s fast.”

Jeddah
Neighborhoods Al Balad (Old Town) This will be the first in a series of stories Destination Jeddah will feature about special places around the city. Here, a local mother recalls her childhood memories of family trips to Al Balad during Ramadan, a tradition that she continues with her own children today.

AL BALAD IN RAMADAN- Growing up in Jeddah, my parents started a tradition of taking us to Al Balad every Ramadan. My dad used to hold my hand and take me through the narrow streets of Al Balad in the late afternoon. Our first stop has always been Gabel Street (Al Qabel St.). We’ve always found the dates and candy shops as soon as we enter, Even though we usually already had enough dates to last us a whole year, it is sort of a ritual to buy dates and candies at Al Balad. Continuing on, there is what my dad calls “the best tamea falafel in all of Jeddah.” We also used to enjoy their Indian falafel. Another key stop is the House of Coffee. Even though House of Coffee products are now sold in supermarkets and several new locations around Jeddah, nothing compares to the one in Balad. DESTINATION JEDDAH 41

The landmark juice vendor (Best mango juice in Jeddah)
Farther along, we are always greeted by a loud voice shouting something in our direction. We all laugh and look to find the familiar face: It is the old man who sells traditional the local dessert, labania and lado. We head toward him as my mom jokes that she doesn’t want to buy from him because of the things he was calling out. He was loudly praying for God to take the power from all women. My mother asks threateningly, “What did you just say?” Then he puts on an innocent face and says, “I was praying to God to give you strength and power!” We would laugh and buy the dessert that we never actually ate. This same scenario has happened every year for the past 35 years. Just around the corner is Am Ahmad (Am is a respectful word added in front of an older man`s name). Am Ahmad has a 2x2 meter store that sells cheese, olives, bread and so 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH

many other things that you can’t imagine such a small place containing. Honestly, he has the best cheese and bread in town. He recognizes us, and we exchange Ramadan greetings and chat with him as he weighs our items. Our mouths water as we stare at the fresh produce. It’s getting closer to Iftar, and we are getting hungrier. Our loads have grown heavier by late afternoon, and we definitely need a porter. Until a few years ago, porters would place our load in a huge basket and carry it over their head. Most porters use cardboard boxes now, but if I’m lucky I still find one with a huge basket. With our porter trailing close behind, we head to the juice vendor at the entrance of Souq Alalawi for some refreshing mango juice.

Candy stall
AL BALAD NIGHTS BEFORE EID- Vendors are scattered all over Al Balad in the last week of Ramadan, selling candies and different kinds of sweets for the Eid festivities. Other stalls sell cheap clothes and leather goods. One should not go to Balad without eating Balela (a snack of cooked chickpeas topped with spices, vinegar and pickles), another intresting experience is watching the fresh Kebdah( Liver ) vendors cooking it in the open air. You will see most of the Jeddawies, rich and poor, all enjoying the whole thing.
Mouth watering ( Baleelah Toppings )
Happy kids run around with their Eideah (money giving by family members to children in Eid), buying candies and fireworks to celebrate Eid. These Eid nights are a whole different experience that should not be missed.I still visit Al Balad with my parents, but instead of Dad holding my hand, I push him in his
wheelchair as my own young ones discover Al Balad for themselves. It’s a family affair, a tradition that would leave me feeling incomplete if we didn’t go to Balad during Ramadan. My 23-year-old son loves to go to Balad. Someday he will take his children, and I am sure he will tell them “This is the best cheese in town.” DESTINATION JEDDAH 43

DINING AROUND TOWN
Mystery Diners Ambience - La Promenade Café’s high-ceilings, warm lighting, and rich color scheme contribute to its decadent vibe. A classy lounge-seating area with plush burgundy sofas and low tables is the perfect atmosphere for sipping cocktails or enjoying hookah with friends. Hungry diners seeking a filling meal might prefer eating at a candlelit table in the regular dining area. Service - We were greeted at the entrance by a welcoming staff and led to the lounge area. Our friendly server made excellent recommendations from La Promenade’s menu. The restaurant was a popular place around midnight in Ramadan, so our slightly distracted waiter was not as attentive as he might usually have been. We ordered sheesha right away. Our waiter was very apologetic as he told us that all the sheesha pipes were already taken. Location: Third floor of La Promenade 2, Tahlia Street. Contact info: +966-2-6688712

Bresaola salad
Food - A complimentary basket of bread and garlic butter was promptly delivered to our table. The cocktail menu was full of tempting choices. We ordered a banana berry smoothie (SR 22) and a mocha slush (SR 20). Both were exceptional. The soup and salad selection left nothing to be desired. Crab soup with sweet corn (SR 40) was a flavorful chowder packed with shredded crabmeat. The bresaola salad (SR 60) included aged salted beef, balsamic vinegar, and Parmesan cheese. Both were received with enthusiasm.
Tiramisu
Fish Provencale
On the waiter’s suggestion, we ordered the fish provencale (SR 75), a light serving of najel topped with creamy white sauce. The small portions of mashed potatoes, carrots, spinach and zucchini served on the side were good, but did not seem like an ideal compliment to the savory fish. Some in our party found the fish to be a bit too salty.
Overall-From mood to food, La Promenade CafĂŠ offers a classy dining experience, and guests should expect to pay accordingly. Dinner for one may cost between SR 100-300. There is a minimum price of SR 80, which is very reasonable for such an elegant dining experience.

Abu Zaid- locations are very much like Shawurma joints in town, and are primarily targeting the takeaway crowd. Although you can, if you choose to sit in the restaurant, on one of the many multi colored plastic chairs available. The food is what draws in the crowds and it can get busy, so don’t be surprised if you have to queue while you wait for your food to be prepared. Mutabag is a bit like a thick pancake folded and cut into squares. Four different types are available at Abu Zaid, Meat & egg, vegetables, cheese, and banana mutabag (which is nice and sweet). All are worth a try, the meat can be a little salty. Savory dishes are served with lemon and a small chili in case you want to spice things up a bit. Maasoob is a traditional Hijazi Dish, and is basically bananas, dates and bread all mashed up together. It looks like it might be a banana crumble, but it isn’t very crumbly, less crumbs, more squish. There are three variations of this on offer at Abu
Zaid. Plain Maasoob (bananas, dates and bread), special Maasoob (with honey), and Maasoob with Cream.
Shawurma, Foul (beans) and Tamees (Grilled Arabic Bread) are also all available at Abu Zaid. Fresh Milk and Laban (Yogurt Drink) are also served fresh here..

Yildizlar is probably one of Jeddah’s best Restaurants, they’ve cer-
tainly been on the scene long enough and remain a popular choice, especially at lunch times when you will often find it difficult to get a table as the restaurant fills up with business types.
The name ‘Yildizlar’ is Turkish for ‘Stars’, the restaurant serves up a mix of Turkish and Lebanese Cuisines (two of the most popular types of food in Jeddah). The restaurant has a classic more traditional interior, (as you might expect from one of Jeddah’s oldest restaurants), with dark wooden panels lining the walls and small delicate chandeliers lighting the tables. Its well known among the business community in Jeddah for its excellent Arabic Food, so it’s not unusual to bump into some of the leading business men in town when visiting. The Food is typical of a Middle Eastern restaurant, and all the usual fare is available. The sambousas are always served fresh, and are soft and doughy. The Kofta and Kebabs are so good you will almost certainly want to order a large dish. Ask for a Mixed grill to try a bit of everything, fish, kofta, shrimps etc. Najel Fillets are also available, along with Lobster, Smoke Salmon and Caviar if you fancy something a little more extravagant.
A Great selection of Soups and Salads and some fantastic starters with nice selection of Mezze, Kibbah, Houmous, Baba Ghanoush etc. Yildizlar also has great Kibbah Nayeh (raw Kibbeh). Be sure to try some of their arabic bread which is baked biljoz fresh in their own oven. If you like desserts, try the Kataif biljoz or with Kashta, these are tiny pancakes rolled with pistachios and cream. All Kinds of Tea are available, Jasmine, Green Tea, and Arabic Coffee. The Staff are polite and are very attentive. Private dining rooms are available for business meetings in addition to the open area restaurant, which also has a busy family section.
A Takeaway Menu is also available. Prices are above average, but you get more than what you pay for, and its a deliciouse experience.

Crusty is Tucked away in Khalidiya in the Rawdah District. It is the latest arrival on the cafe/bakery scene in Jeddah. A Viennese café would probably be a more appropriate way to describe Crusty, (in German thats Wiener Kaffeehaus) these remain popular in Vienna and play an important role in the culture there.
Unlike some other café traditions around the world, it is completely normal for a customer to linger alone for hours and study the newspaper in the Kaffehaus. Something many of us have little trouble doing. Even more so with the Free WiFi Crusty offers customers. Taking pride in their coffee, Crusty focusses only on the best Viennese coffee and serves Julius Meinl who has been making coffee for over 145 years! The Austrians certainly have had some time to perfect things, the first coffeehouse in Austria opened in Vienna in 1683 after the Battle of Vienna, (by using supplies from the spoils obtained after defeating the Turks.) Along with coffee, the waiter in a Viennese café will serve an obligatory glass of cold tap water and during a long stay will often bring additional water unrequested. This is exactly what happens at Crusty. The idea I am told is to clean your palate before the first sip. The Attention to detail is superb and the coffee and Salads are well worth the visit. However if its food your after, the coffee shop/pâtisserie also has an extensive menu which serves up a variety of meals and beverages with dishes like Cream of Asparagus Soup, Chicken Caesar Salads and Freshly made Quiches.

The Bakery also seems to be drawing in the crowds, Crusty Bakery Includes Baguettes, Sweet & Savory Filled Pastries and fresh. Croissants, all of which are unlike anything else you might have come across in Jeddah. Try the German Pretzels (baked fresh each day) they’re super as is the lemon mint drink. If you have a sweet tooth, there are plenty of Austrian & German treats to satisfy you. Pastries include Raspberry Vanilla Strudel, Cinnamon Sugar Swirls, Nut Nougat Croissants, Creme Brule and the famous Date Cake. Breakfasts served include international, American, continental and local selections which are great for an early morning bite. Myself being a bit of a health fanatic I hope to see some healthier options in the future like skimmed yogurt, muesli & fruit salad etc. Be warned the Breakfasts are increasingly popular here, so popular that I was unable to sit down on my last trip there… lets hope they open another branch soon! Abou Shakra -Located west of Palestine Street, Abou Shakra is probably one of the best arabian food restaurants in Jeddah. First established in 1947 in Egypt they’ve been around long enough to get most of their recipes right. They opened their first restaurant in Saudi in Jeddah in 1998. They serve everything you would expect from your typical Lebanese/Arab restaurant. Kibbah, Sambousas, Kofta, Kebabs etc. Great Lamb chops and for desert their Om Ali is particularly good. The restaurant is also pretty nice inside with a great ocean view. Location: North Corniche and Palestine Street, Al Hamra Tel: +966 2 6694185, 6604049
Samadi is a great little Middle Eastern Bakery tucked between Goodies and the Ligne Roset furniture store on Rawdah Street. Just before you come to Big Bite and the Lobster Restaurant. They specialize in Arabic pastries, sweets and cakes, and are one of the better bakeries in town. In the month of Ramadan, their sweets are increasingly popular after Iftar as they provide the much-needed release of energy after breaking your fast. A typical family will usually stock up on an array of sweets, which they will continue to feast on through the night up to Suhour. Some of their daily fresh sweets are Baklawa, Basbousah, Ma’mool, and Kunafa, (although there are many more) They also do a great Banana Kunafa which is one of my personal favourites as is the date Ma’mool. Prices are reasonable considering the quality of the sweets.

Chocolate Corner
Perhaps no food is more popular during Eid than sweets. Elaborate packages full of candy and desserts are customary Eid gifts. Cheap gift baskets of candy can be found at any supermarket, but for high quality treats, the savvy shopper seeks out the experts. by Molly Morris In Jeddah, the Chocolate Corner in Al Rawdah has long been one of those experts, and now the business is improving and expanding. A second Chocolate Corner opened on Sultan Street in September. The new store is more than three times the size of the flagship location, and has several new features, including an in-store chocolate café slated to open soon. It will be the first chocolate store in the Kingdom with a café devoted to serving unique chocolate drinks. Nesma United oversaw development of the new store. Nesma Holding Vice President Ramzi Ali is thrilled with the new amenities at the Sultan Street Chocolate Corner. “This is one instance where the design implementation was better than the original plan,” said Ali, noting the store’s luxurious, funky atmosphere. 62 DESTINATION JEDDAH
Though location and ambiance is key, the true highlight of the Chocolate Corner is that it is a local business. Ever since Salwa Redwan opened the first store 15 years ago, the Chocolate Corner has manufactured its wares in a Rawdah chocolate factory. Ingredients are imported from Switzerland, but the company designs and packages its own products. At the Chocolate Corner’s new location, guests can choose from a variety of candy and packages on display in the showroom, or meet with a consultant to design a custom-made gift package and sample various types of chocolate. The latter option is popular for special occasions like weddings and anniversaries. Readymade gift trays are available in three main categories: classical, funky and traditional. Traditional gift baskets include seasonal specialties, like nougat during Eid.
Chocolate Corner recently began selling a line of exotic gourmet chocolates, including more than 50 types of chocolate bars with unusual flavors, like a curry-spiced bar from India. Items in this Stainer line have distinct health benefits. For example, chocolate wrappers may specify that the treats within are rich in antioxidants or help reduce blood pressure. For a wholly local, luxury shopping experience this Eid, indulge your senses and your sweet tooth by sampling the Chocolate Corners latest offers at the extravagant new Sultan Street location. Store hours are 10 am to 2 pm, and 5 pm to 11 pm. For more information, call 665-0699.

RED SEA COAST
Night Diving by Marawa Jad
During Ramadan, many residents of Jeddah take up night diving. This year’s hot summer keeps some avid divers out of the sun and sea during the day. Instead they look forward to a dive late at night. The Appeal of Night Diving
Diving at night differs dramatically from diving during the day. Many underwater creatures that hide during the day come out to feed in night, and they can be easily spotted by the diver’s flash light. The nocturnal creatures can be seen in their natural habitats interacting with each other and feeding. One of the most beautiful aspects of night diving is watching the coral feeding. Coral blooms after dark, absorbing nutrients from the water around it and releasing luminescent light, so the sea is aglow. The process is very beautiful!
Where To Night Dive?
Preferred diving depths vary from diver to diver but 60ft/18meters is best to enjoy the scenery and have a longer diving experience. Locations may vary depending on
66 DESTINATION JEDDAH
the diver’s preference. Experienced divers often take a boat out into the open sea and dive there. Others prefer to start from beach cabin locations, like Salhiyyah Cabins, to get to the depths of the sea quicker.
A local diver enjoys night diving in North Jeddah. (Photographed by Motaz Bahri).
Some of the colorful night life enjoyed by Red Sea divers.
Private resorts all along the northern coast offer the best access to the sea for shore diving. Some expatriates visiting Jeddah book a weekend diving package with a hotel in the city, and nearly all Jeddah hotels offer some kind of access to northern beaches by shuttle. The most popular are Al Nakeel Beach, Blue Beach, Sheraton Beach and Al Bilad Beach. Durrant Al Arus, the only PADI Gold Palm Resort in the Kingdom, offers a five-star hotel situated on a Red Sea lagoon and villas that front an 18 hole golf course. There is a half mile of beach diving available, or boats can be arranged to the outer reefs through the dive
shop at Durrah Marina. Top hotels in Jeddah have contacts with the dive shops and can arrange instruction for beginners or recreational dives for qualified divers. Many offer private beaches from which to shore dive.
Before You Head Out...
You can book a trip on one of the excursion boats that go out farther to more colorful and secluded sections of the reef. You need to bring along a passport, Iqama or Saudi ID and your Saudi dive permit.

Getting
Around Jeddah
TRAVEL TRENDS
by Jessica Stockwell
Each Ramadan, thousands of tourists and travelers come to Jeddah to visit family and friends. Some traditionally gather seaside and set up for tea and shisha on the Corniche, while others can’t wait to head to the air-conditioned malls and amusement centers for family entertainment. Formal public transportation is limited, and Destination Jeddah offers some tips on getting around. Taxis are plentiful and affordable in local
neighborhoods. They may be good for short trips, but standards vary because most street taxis are privately operated. For visitors needing to get from a hotel to a friend’s home, ask the hotel lobby front desk or concierge to make arrangements. This arrangement usually includes a driver-chauffered economy car for about 80-100SR per hour. For a taxi off the street or flagged down it will cost about 25SR for a short drop-off trip or up to 50SR for a longer one. Expect to pay up to 50SR per hour for a taxi, metered or not, and agree upon a price before you get in the taxi. If communication is too limited or unclear, feel safe in saying, shukran and flag another taxi. Taxi
Editor’s Note: Most taxis are 2006 model cars with clear conventional taxi markings. However, due to upgraded building and facility security in the last two years, taxi access is limited to pick-up and drop-off outside this boundary, and taxi pick-up and 70 DESTINATION JEDDAH
drop-off is usually streetside. It’s recommended to pre-arrange and secure transport options one day in advance to minimize being caught in the heat or at a business or facility that is closed. Best bet taxi pick-up and drop-off points are local hotels and large shopping malls. (See our hotel and shopping malls directory.)
services keep improving, however a city-wide comprehensive taxi service standard is yet to be delivered. Private Drivers A hired driver through a car rental company is the conventional way to get around the city. Check with a recommended car rental service, our recommendation Key Rental Car (683-1236), Budget Saudi Rental Car (www.BudgetSaudi.com), Hilton dispatch office: 02-607-7350) or Abu Diyab Rental Car (667-7779).
Hiring a driver through a car rental company is the conventional way to get around the city.
Editor’s Note: A quick check of services resulted in varied responses. Expect to pay 80100SR per hour and 800SR per day for a driver chauffeured car rental. Rates and services vary and arrangements must be booked 2-3 days in advance. Visitors with male family members holding an international driver’s license and proper identification papers are minimum requirements for rental.
Saudi Public Transport Company
SAPTCO provides public transport, including new full amenity motor coaches between major cities and towns. For tourists interested in visiting other cities like Abha or Umrah travel service to Makkah and Madinah, these luxury buses are a comfortable way to travel. (www.saptco. com.sa, 800-124-9999).

DJ OPEN HOUSE 19 August 2008
WHERE
Al Suhaili building – Roof Top Foyer. A view from the top of the Al Suhaili building overlooking the city of Jeddah was an appropriate and scenic venue for Destination Jeddah Magazine’s Open House.
WHAT A Celebration of DJ Inaugural Zero Issue, released August 2008. Celebrations took place within the Rumman Company’s Roof Top Foyer, home of the first DJ magazine. Hot off the press. Sweeping views of the city impressed guests, as did the magazine’s focus on people, places and products creating a new image of urban Jeddah. Vertigo Restaurant staff were on hand, their specialy fresh-blended cocktails including rumman red pomegranate and peach and apple mix.
LANGUAGE CHALLENGE With the mix of languages and influence of so many nationalities here, language and communications can be difficult or frustrating at times, but it’s delightful when words, expressions and communications click or connect. Discussions at the DJ Open House inspired our new Arabic Language
