EDITOR IN CHIEF’S LETTER

EDITORIAL EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Enas Hashani

MANAGING EDITOR Motaz Bahri

Jeddah welcomed many interesting visitors from different parts of the world in the past month. They all came for different reasons yet it all narrows down to building bridges and to opening doors for an effective dialogue between Saudis and people from other nations. This is a direct result of the initiative of His Royal Highness The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz to encourage intercultural dialogue. I believe that the best way to understand and relate to others and to change the image and stereotype about us is through culture in all its forms –– music, films, writing, art, sports and theatre –– but we have to admit that we are a conservative society and somewhat protective of our culture. However, in the past month I have witnessed what I have not seen in a whole year! Numerous cultural events took place in Jeddah and one found it difficult to keep up with them. There were movie premiers, plays, conferences, lectures, student exchange programs, and, for the first time, even a stand-up comedy show. In this issue we tried our best to share with you as much as we could about these activities and events. All of these great happenings lead me to conclude that one can only be positive towards a brighter and promising future.

a program that will give me the opportunity to study and travel and see different cultures. That is a crucial element in the hospitality industry.

Is a career in the hospitality industry rewarding? Based on my personal experience,

Mashhour Pharaon Having had a successful career in the fields of hospitality and marketing and being fluent in Arabic, English, German and French languages, Mr. Mashhour Pharaon is a Saudi citizen with a dynamic personality and has an acute sense of business ethics. Currently he is the Regional Sales Manager Lubricants for Shell Markets and he gave us a brief insight in to his education and views on getting in to the hospitality industry.

Was your education in Glion instrumental in gaining knowledge that still comes in use today? Education in Glion International Hotel Management school gave me a vast scope of knowledge and insight into different subjects that one doesn’t get in other colleges. It introduced me to the professionalism, attention to details, and the high quality standards of European hospitality and service sector. All these traits still come to use today not only in my professional life but also in my personal daily life.

To what do you attribute your success?

Attitude, discipline, and ambitions, these are the three instrumental factors to my success today. These attributes were seeded in me in Glion school which I am very thankful for and which I regard as the key characteristics for anyone successful person in today’s competitive world.

How do you feel about the Study and Tour Program for the Saudi youth? I haven’t heard

about the program, but from the sound of it I wish I had the opportunity during my days for 6

DESTINATION JEDDAH

I regard a career in the hospitality industry as a very rewarding one. Despite the irregular working hours, I constantly get to meet different kind of people from various background and cultures. Thanks to that, I have built a huge network. It’s a job that comes with constant fun and never a dull moment!

Do you see a growth in the tourism sector in Saudi Arabia? Tourism in Saudi Arabia is

still a growing sector which promises a great opportunity. Especially with what Saudi can offer, like the religious tourism, the reefs in the Red Sea, the virgin beaches, the desert safaris, the archaeological sites, the underground rivers and the beautiful mountains.

Are diplomas and certificates in hotel management still acceptable or should a student aim for a degree? One should always

opt for higher education, be it in the form of certificates, diplomas, Ph.Ds or whatever. One should never stop the learning process. We need to educate ourselves daily as the world changes daily.

Which skills do you think are important for new entrants in the hospitality industry?

The right attitude. The hospitality industry is very demanding and the interaction with people on daily basis can be very tiring. There are no nationalities, races, or tribes in the hotel industry and everyone needs to be respected, from the smallest to the biggest person. Success lies in the satisfaction of the guests and for that, a positive attitude goes a long way in making it so.

What advice would you give to students travelling to Switzerland for the first time?

Learn the cultures of the country that is hosting you and look at what it has to offer on historical, social and cultural elements as they will add to your knowledge and will come in use one day.

Creating a Legacy The Saudi-British Youth Forum by: Syed Shabbir Siraj

A few decades ago, when it came to having their say on significant issues and policies that are generally discussed by grown-ups, young people were faced with an uphill task; how to reach out to each other and share their vision with everybody. But the ever changing trends in communications and ground-breaking social reforms since then have seen to their freedom of expression and delivered their voices to the adults in power. Youth concentrated organizations have already taken center stage and a direct result of this is the creation of the Saudi-British Youth Forum. 10 DESTINATION JEDDAH

During a session at the National Museum, Riyadh

Focusing mainly on cultural ties, the forum brings together young men and women from the countries of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom and enables dialogue on cultural issues and lets interaction between the groups to flourish. The initial forum was held in London in October of 2007, coinciding with the visit of King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia to the United Kingdom, and was deemed a success. In early January of 2009, the 2nd Saudi-British Youth Forum took place in Jeddah and later in Riyadh. The Council of The Saudi Chambers of Commerce and Industry under auspices of the Saudi foreign ministry and the British Youth Council hosted the forum where forty participants from both countries were given the opportunity to forge bonds with one another and to bring forth ideas that would encourage a better understanding of the cultural differences and to build upon the similarities.

The young people belonged to institutes and organizations from both countries, namely Islamic Relief, Fainak.com, Mouth That Roars, King Abdul Aziz National Dialogue Centre, BYC, Jeddah Youth Empowerment, Minorities of Europe, Saudi British Council, European Alternatives, Effat College, Black Training and Enterprise Group.

OUR GUESTS

A Saudi participant from an organization called Fainak, described the first few days of the forum in the port city of Jeddah as quite memorable. “The ice breaker bingo on the first day was a fun activity for all of us. It certainly helped in getting to know more about each person in the large group that was taking part in the forum,” she said with a beaming smile.

She also shared an interesting experience from an outing to the historic downtown of Jeddah. “After our daily session of inter-cultural dialogue, the group went sightseeing in old Jeddah and near the end of the tour we made our way to the rooftop of Naseef House, one of the oldest houses in the city. Soon after came the call for Maghrib prayer from the many mosques in and around the area. The sight of the setting sun and the beautiful calls to prayer were overpowering and this was felt by the visiting friends. A tremendous spiritual sensation had taken over, especially amongst our visiting counterparts who were of diverse faiths.”

The British youth’s trip to Jeddah set the stage for things to follow in Riyadh, where the latter phase of the forum saw them engaging in more bilateral discussions that touched on cultural tolerance and the challenges facing the youth of today. After four days of these important exchanges, the whole group was rewarded with a journey to Shaybah; a modern industrial town in the Rub’ al Khali, the world’s largest sand desert. The youth were unanimous when it came to the positive outcome of their participation. “Building on our sense of shared values we’ve been able to move from simple to complex and searching questions and further on to underlying sensitive issues,” said Tom Le Feuvre, one of the British students.

12 DESTINATION JEDDAH

A big part of the forum was the Two Kingdoms’ projects for the youth of both communities and pilot projects were brainstormed by the young men and women. One ambitious idea to emerge from these sessions is a film project titled “Our Everyday Lives” which will have a young person from Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom illustrate their daily life in the form of a visual narrative. Another proposal is to develop training and games to support youth participation and intercultural dialogue in Saudi Arabia and the UK. The projects will be given due attention at the 2009 Two Kingdoms’ Conference in Riyadh and will be implemented subsequently. The culmination of the 2nd Saudi-British Youth Forum is, in essence, only the beginning. There will be many more forums such as this and our British guests will return another time, but for now the youth from both sides have spoken; the future is theirs and it is their right to have a hand in making it an exemplary one.

SAUDI FAST GROWTH 100

Amr Dabbagh Governor of SAGIA performing Ardha dance at Al Athreyyah

A sound advice is all it took to create a robust rankings system of fast-growing companies. Dr. Michael Porter, the famed financial guru of the Harvard Business School, had spoken at the 2008 Global Competitiveness Forum about the need to increase Saudi Arabia’s competitiveness through entrepreneurship. Heeding the words of Dr. Porter, the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) and joint founding partners, Al Watan newspaper and Next Economics, decided to launch a national program to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the country – thus the Saudi Fast Growth 100 was born. With the concept firmly in place, the essential details were taken in to consideration such as which companies could compete and how their performance would be gauged. It was decided that one-hundred private Saudi companies, five years and older, would qualify for the Saudi Fast Growth 100 and the winners would be ranked according to their revenue growth rate over the last five years. Not leaving younger companies (two to five years old) out of the picture, the program gives them the chance to qualify for the Start Up List while companies that are two years or younger and may be contenders for the future are included in the Companies to Watch List. 14 DESTINATION JEDDAH

On January 26, 2009 the first ever Saudi Fast Growth 100 Leadership Summit prominently took place in the capital city of Riyadh, as part of the 2009 Global Competitiveness Forum. The inaugural fastest-growing list of Saudi companies was announced with much enthusiasm and revealed a variety of dynamic companies, the majority of which are founded by male and female entrepreneurs. The list included forty-five companies qualifying for the Saudi Fast Growth 100, twenty-seven qualifying for the Start Up List, and twenty-three others given a place in the Companies to Watch category.

Michael Porter - Motaz Bahri

Riz Khan - Enas Hashani

The ambition of the Saudi Fast Growth 100 is to shine the spotlight on companies with real revenue growth and real success and one such company that was featured on the Companies to Watch list was Rumman Company, the publishers of Destination Jeddah magazine and creators of the only Saudi social networking website Fainak.com. Mrs. Enas Hashani, the CEO of Rumman Company, along with Art Director Bayan Abuzinadah and Managing Editor Motaz Bahri, was bestowed an award for her company’s positive endeavors and for the ever growing business that she has established. It is a fortunate thing for the new generation of entrepreneurs in Saudi Arabia to be recognized and be given due appreciation by the Saudi Fast Growth 100 program. With the average revenue growth rate of companies in the five years old and less category being a remarkable 198% between 2006 and 2007, the desire to compete is certainly present and more success stories are sure to follow in next year’s Saudi Fast Growth 100; the new benchmark of entrepreneurial competitiveness in Saudi Arabia. Symposium

by: Syed Shabbir Siraj

Providing a helping hand to those with disabilities is the best gift one can give and this is exactly what The Help Center has been doing since its inception. The Help Center, founded in 1986 by the late Ahmed Abdullah Juffali, is a private non-profit center located in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and is dedicated to the welfare of children with mental disabilities, from birth to eighteen years of age. The Help Center has given the topic of disability the exposure it requires by organizing symposia beginning from the year 2005. This year’s symposium lasted from 26th to 28th of January and was entitled “Young Adults & Beyond – Towards a Secure & Stable Future.” It was aimed at addressing the problems and difficulties of persons with mental disabilities who are on the verge of entering adulthood and concentrated on issues like employment, aging, marriage, legislation and medical care. Throughout the three days, the center held twentytwo roundtable discussions and workshops. The Help Center’s exhibition area ceiling had been adorned with hanging cloth of bold colors taken from the center’s logo which symbolizes the vibrancy in each and every person, disabled or not. Visitors were being guided within the premises by young volunteers, some of them afflicted with a disability. A separate venue, a large tent-like structure, was erected for the formal opening of the symposium on the evening of its first day and this was attended by specially invited guests. Separate seating areas were provided for men and women inside the beautifully decorated space. After a recitation of a verse from the Holy Quran by a handicapped young man, the evening’s deliberations commenced.

One of the spokespersons for The Help Center gave a brief introduction to the guests about the symposium’s goal and then presented a short documentary called “We Are Capable”, which was about four young people with mental disabilities who had successfully acquired jobs at different companies and institutions. Immediately after the documentary, two handicapped adolescent girls came on stage and narrated their daily activities. One of the girls, Fatima Ghazali, who loves to play hairdresser, gave details of her daily routine which sees her going to the Help Center and then coming back home, where she loves to help her mother in the kitchen. “This is my life.” she amiably proclaimed before returning to her seat. How normal a life these girls were leading is what they conveyed and their message of perseverance was received with a tremendous applause. Subsequently, an “Introducing the Client” opening address was given by Mrs. Gerda Kuhfittig, Director of Care and Development of the Help Center. The evening continued with speeches and personal experiIt is significant to note that an area with translaences by luminaries and ended soon thereafter tors had been setup at the venue and wireless with a welcoming party for the guests. headsets were made available to those who needed them. This allowed for non-Arabic speakers to understand the majority of Arabic speeches and for non-English speakers to understand a single speech that was given in English. Also, every speech was communicated in sign language by a specialist who was on stage at all times. These great arrangements were proof of The Help Center’s dedication in having everyone absorb the pearls of wisdom which were carried in the words of the speakers. Bringing together renowned doctors and acclaimed professionals to enlighten families of children with disabilities and the people in general through the media, the symposiums at The Help Center have certainly become an important platform for holding discussions about disabilities. It is for all of us to remember that enhancing the quality of life for the disabled does not have to be just the responsibility of those associated with them – non-handicapped people must play a role in making their lives better as well. The International Recession and its Impact on Gulf Countries Jeddah hosted a forum about the reflections and impacts of Gulf Cooperation Council Countries. The recession around the globe has become one of the most highly alarming incidents, not only for the Gulf region but for the whole Middle East. Over sixteen speakers, representing financial experts from Gulf States and decision-makers, economists, businessmen and women, entrepreneurs, and academics, were invited to the Forum. Held on February 1, 2009 at the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), the forum’s program opened with two speeches by Saleh Ali Al-Turki, Head of Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Abdul Rahim Hassan Naqi, Secretary General of GCC Union of Chambers. Selective sessions afterwards gave participants a wide range of challenging issues to discuss with the audience.

Effat College-Culture Shock Culture shock, as defined by the Oxford dictionary, is “the feeling of confusion and anxiety that somebody may feel when they go to live in or visit another country”. Taking this definition up a level, the students of a communications class at Jeddah’s Effat College for women prepared an entertaining and informative presentation on the subject that was held in the college auditorium on the evening of January 27, 2009. Utilizing the big projection screen of the auditorium, the students took cues from presentation slides and explained to the audience the three stages of culture shock which are excitement, reality, and adjustment. Riproaringly hilarious skits were performed by more participating students as each of the three stages unfolded in the presentation. This was followed by a twenty minute documentary made by Effat College students who were a part of the Culture Shock project. It featured extensive interviews with students born and raised abroad prior to settling down in Jeddah with their families. Their expectations about Jeddah city and how they felt after having arrived here were the highlight of the revealing documentary; from the hot weather and the closing of shops during prayer times to the donning of black abayas and not being allowed to drive. The Culture Shock presentation came to an end with a gift giving ceremony for their teachers by

the thoughtful students and the distribution of gift packs containing, amongst other things, literature on the topic of culture shock to the members of the audience.

SHAYBAH

&THE RUB AL KHALI by: Syed Shabbir Siraj

There is no place like Saudi Arabia’s Rub al Khali, or Empty Quarter—a land of unforgiving extremes that is ranked as one of the largest sand deserts in the world, encompassing some 650,000 square kilometers and covering most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula. It is an extraordinary moonscape of sand dunes, sparse thorn bushes and rocks. 24 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Taking the second place in the most oil-rich territory in the world, The Empty Quarter is known to have vast oil reserves underneath its barren crust. For centuries this scorching desert has defied settlement yet it is now home to a major Arab light crude oil producing site and Saudi Aramco’s industrial oasis of a town: Shaybah. Located forty kilometers from the northern edge of the Empty Quarter, the desert wilderness around the industrial town of Shaybah turns in to a mirage once inside the incredible and technologically advanced facility. Trees planted during the initial stages of the project thrive in abundance here and number over six-thousand in all. The red sand dunes in and around Shaybah are a striking contrast to the lush greenery of the town, a relative paradise to those who live and work there.

and temperatures reaching 55 degrees Celsius made the construction of the road a difficult task, though not an impossible one. The progress of the road gave way to a runway, that is still being used today, for which one-hundred million cubic feet of sand had to be removed. These and other obstacles are the sole reason why the oil field, initially discovered in 1968, remained untouched for such a long time.

Shaybah is no less than a marvel of modern engineering. To gain access to the field, a road was built but with little cooperation from nature’s side; soft desert sand, the uneven topography DESTINATION JEDDAH 25

The small community residing at Shaybah is able to thrive independently by producing its own desalinated water and electricity. The main facilities house three gas-oil separation plants (GOSPs), a gas compression plant and multiple utility plants. When not working, residents and visitors enjoy countless social and recreational activities. With the aid of the Dhahran library, the multipurpose library at Shaybah has an impressive collection of reading material. There is a gymnasium, game room and swimming pool. Barbecue parties, trips to the desert,

dune bugging and billiards add additional social outlets for residents. Communication services such as Internet and telephones are provided. A 650 kilometer fibre optic cable also links Shaybah to the main radio system at Abqaiq. Standing on a higher sand dune it is possible to appreciate the peace and serenity of the spectacular red desert and the magnificent views from the top of the dune are simply stunning. As the sun sets it creates the strangest effect, as though a thin, green gauze has been draped over the dunes. For a few minutes thoughts of oil are far away. Shaybah in the Rub al Khali is remarkable in its man-made presence, awe-inspiring in its significance to the world oil market, and strangely beautiful considering it is located in one of the most remote, desolate and inhospitable areas in Saudi Arabia. Perhaps this prompts the question, why would anyone want to go there? The answer is difficult to put in to words as it is an experience to which no words can really do justice. To head in to the desert with a Bedouin guide and to spend a night or two camping out under the stars amid this incredible environment is a stirring encounter. The beauty of the desert, its sheer scale and its constantly changing shapes and colors are entrancing. Special thanks to Saudi Aramco for making this trip possible.

HEAD

OVER

HEELS

Delighting audiences once again, Maisah Sobaihi, a professor and writer, performed her play “Head Over Heels” to a packed hall at Effat College on the 12th of February, 2009. Given the description on the promotional material, which said that it is “a fun light-hearted play that touches on a variation of topics concerning women in Saudi Arabia.”, “Head Over Heels” turned out to be not only entertaining but thought provoking as well. Ms. Sobaihi, the sole character enacting the play, narrated three stories which were about particular incidents in the lives of three of her female friends. Amidst the brilliantly designed set, Ms. Sobaihi launched in to the stories revolving around issues such as the ban on driving for women in the Kingdom and dealing with polgyny. Three different sections were present on the stage, each decorated in a style that complimented the story which was being narrated. On stage left was a traditional Saudi living room complete with sheesha. At center stage, a more modern living room had been set up, while stage right was made to look like a bedroom. The play was mostly in English with Arabic phrases sprinkled here and there to remind the audience of the origins of the fascinating tale. Once the enthusiastic performance by Ms. Sobaihi ended and the curtains came to a close, the eruption of applause only made it clearer for everyone in the auditorium that progress for women in the Kingdom is happening and it is bound to pave the way for more engaging plays in the future. 34 DESTINATION JEDDAH

FILM

“Al-Samt” A Saudi short film heading to Cannes and other international film festivals

Written and directed by Tawfik Al-Zaidi, “Al-Samt” , stars Mohammed Al-Shehry, Maha Osama and Afnan Alfarhan, in addition to a carefully selected group of children. Produced by Bandar Alabdul-Salam of Dar Alfa Production, the plot revolves around the treatment of deaf and dumb people in Saudi society.

Tawfik Al-Zaidi

The film begins with a traffic accident that leaves the parents of a young boy and girl, who are deaf and dumb, dead while they are rescued from the scene of the accident. The two kids continue to face a series of incidents focusing on how people perceive the deaf and dumb. Both the children in the film react and express themselves in a symbolic way, touching the hearts and minds and leaving deep impact as the story unfolds. Even though the film is addressing the deaf and dumb, the film has been subtitled in Arabic, English, and French languages in order to help raise awareness of such discrimination. “Al-Samt” has participated in numerous international film festivals including those in the Gulf region and other Arab countries. The film will be part of the Jeddah Film Festival, Gulf Film Festival in Dubai, Ismailia Film Festival in Egypt and Cannes Film Festival in France. The fifteenminute film was professionally made in accordance to the required standards for Cannes festival, especially in its technical aspects. Al-Zaidi showed gratefulness to Alabdul-Salam who generously financed the film, aiming to bring out a highly professional picture with no regard to its box office revenues. DESTINATION JEDDAH 35

COMEDY

JEDDAH’S

Stand-Up Comedy

“History in the making” Ahmad Ahmad

by: Jessica Stockwell

Laughter, in fact, can aid in reducing anxiety and can help swing your mood into the positive. That’s just what happened in Jeddah to a full-house audience when a first time comedy performance, headlining Ahmed Ahmed, took center stage. Peter Howarth-Lees of Smile Productions conceptualized the shows and brought over Ahmed Ahmed, a comedian from Los Angeles and founding member of Comedy Arabia, to KSA while Jeddah’s own Fainak.com promoted the event and helped organize a local comedic talent search that gave those selected a chance to open the show and perform with a pr o comedian.

Comedy in the Kingdom Ahmed Ahmed’s humor and belief in making light of diverse human relations, family relations and life in general are contagious. He believes, “Comedy can have a positive impact on cross cultural dialogue,” and the art form is what Comedy Arabia calls entertainment for social change. Prior to the performances, local comedians were recruited and selected through a talent event two weeks earlier organized by Fainak.com and hosted at the Almakkiyah culture house in Jeddah. The orchestration of such first time events wouldn’t be possible without partners onboard; major sponsors included Chai Latte and Rotana Music. 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Laugh Out Loud Warm Up

With individual confidence ebbing and flowing at moments in the lead up to each person’s short performance, stage fright was not apparent. Omar from Jeddah, the first up, had everyone laughing in seconds, connecting with the audience as he recounted how he responds to expats who ask him questions about Saudi marriage customs. Dr. Kurdi, a local doctor, took the stage confidently as well as other comedians who now have nick-names like: third up, Hussain, the guy with the thobe; fourth, Omar – WS ( White Sudani ), an Khalid Khalefa Rehman Irish-Sudanese guy who resides in Jeddah (you have to see him to believe his story, but it’s true.); Fahad, a surprise wedding story livened up his humor and ended with a moral-of-the-story for young men; Khalid from Riyadh, who was instrumental in organizing the auditions in Khobar, Riyadh, and Jeddah, took to the stage with great delivery and several stories that the youth could relate to, he made light of the many challenges young adults face on a daily basis; and, Rehman, whose Pakistani humor and explanations of different languages along with funny, exaggerated gestures and facial expressions placed him high in the well-delivered performance category.

Polished, Funny Finale

Ahmed Ahmed took to the stage to a warmed up and welcoming audience. He was happy to be invited and as the cheers and an enthusiastic, happy audience settled down, he began. First with a statement of great first times, “This comedy event is history in the making,” he announced. Then he went in to the comical, “Yeh, I went to the mall, you have lots of malls here, new shirt, new shoes…” He was impressed with just about everything but the traffic. He easily related stories of L.A. traffic and Saudi traffic and made fun of the fears of accidents, not knowing where you are and getting lost. His repertoire of jokes, stories and many unbelievable incidents at airports because of his ethnic background and physical looks, kept everyone engaged and smiling. He topped off the evening with a Al humdul’allah, Insh’allah; and praise for the art form of comedy. He left the Kingdom with hopes of returning and confident that the art form of Comedy—and laughing out loud at ourselves and our circumstances, is alive and well in Saudi Arabia. COUTURE

Nawaf is a creative Saudi fashion designer who graduated from London’s St. Martin’s College and studied under two very famous dress designers, John Galiano and Alexander McQueen, a fellow St. Martin’s graduate. With the recognition that you have garnered so far, has it changed anything when it comes to your designs? Although I am still a beginner, I have gained a good view of what lies ahead; to be more diverse and to be aware of the sophisticated demands of 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH

the clients and to answer to their unending sophisticated requirements, I must say that I have matured in my outlook. Do you see haute couture blossoming in the Kingdom? Allow me to clarify some facts about my trade name “Noa Couture”. First of all

my label produces work as Pret a Porter (Ready To Wear) but with a lot of handcraft work on it so it’s like the couture work with added luxury materials such as French lace and Swarovski crystals applied to it. I do produce Haute Couture only by demand for very specific Clients.

How would you define high fashion and NOA’s place on the global fashion map? For High Fashion people have created their own individual ultimate niche. In style and type of fabrics that are so definitive for each designer, but at the same time they are a mélange of connected patchworks that create the big woven map of fashion. Honestly, I am still grasping the first thread lines in my work and hoping it will turn in to a big thread ball. Once I create that ball, I will have my place in the big woven map of fashion. What is your design process like and does it involve any research? My design process starts with an inspiration. My main inspiration comes from my mother as she’s always been my mentor in her stylized sense of dressing from old couture houses. Seeing certain images of her while selecting a strong mix

of high fashion and extra glamour definitive style, along with the daring mix of unusual fabrics, helped open my eyes to the fashions of the world. In my mind I have certain imagery of human beings in motion and movement of the body floating in an imaginary space, with fluidity and unrestraint motions. Your shows are very theatric in nature, so where did the idea to amalgamate fashion and drama come from? That would be based on the things that inspire me–– Movies by Fellini, Pasolini, and Alejandro Jodorowsky; Strong Characters such as the Rebellious Cleopatra and her Aura, the devoted Madam Butterfly, and the stylized personality of Madam Coco Chanel; World Painters such as Dali and Frida; Structural Architecture like the ones in New York City or Zaha Hadid’s work. I’m also inspired by the Mud Houses we have in our region. My other muses are Black Tulip, Volcanic Lava and the winter Season. Is fashion design a full time occupancy or do you find the time for leisure activities? I would like to laugh so loud to this question. As I said, I am so inspired by mixing things together, so mixing work and pleasure is just another step for me to be inspired from fashion and fun and

fabulous events. I plan my work with full leisure activities so the artistic part becomes evident in the items I create. What kind of challenges do you face when working on your designs? Two things that I find challenging: One is time – it has always been my toughest challenge to get things done on time because I like to work fast. Two is the weather – since it has an effect on my mood and affects my creativity. I love to work in cold weather. Are there any clients that you really had the pleasure of fitting? Yes, clients who know what they want and have a creative vision in life. What are the specific elements that characterize your style? My style is a fusion of patterns and passion shaped into heightened Drama and Grungy Glam! DESTINATION JEDDAH 39

SPECIAL

PLACES

Tahlia Street

Jeddah’s Luxury Hub by:Marriam Mossalli Photography by: Hashem Ainousa

If there’s one hot spot that you cannot miss out on when in Jeddah, it’s undisputedly Tahlia Street. Similar to 5th Avenue in New York and the Champs-Elysées in Paris, it is the place to go for all entertainment needs. From restaurants to shopping centers, Tahlia has something for everybody. 56 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Located in what was once the outskirts of Jeddah, Tahlia has become the hub of city life for locals. In the early nineties, Tahlia gained attention as a cruising road for the young generation to showcase their decked out rides. The dynamics of Tahlia dramatically changed with the introduction of such Western fast food chains as Pizza Hut (the world’s largest branch, by the way) and Wendy’s. Soon after, other fast food franchises and restaurants, like the Italian Lallo’s and the Steakhouse, solidified its place as food mecca. For those people who enjoy more of a health-conscious cuisine, there is The Diet Center to satisfy all of your healthy cravings. For patrons looking for a place to rest between prayers, relax at any of the numerous cafés, or smoke some sheesha on the rooftop terrace of Barney’s, while enjoying the panoramic view. A large Starbucks is located in Le Mall, for those wanting to sip on a Grande Latte, while utilizing the free Internet connection. Now if you’re a shopaholic, Tahlia is definitely the place where you can get your fix. Khayyat Center, Jeddah’s equivalent to L.A.’s Rodeo Drive, contains high-end designer

brands for the label conscious. Hair salons and spas are also located within the center for women wanting to get pampered the Saudi way. For fashionistas who prefer a mix, there are a number of shopping centers located along Tahlia to choose from. Jeddah Mall, Basateen Mall, and Tahlia Shopping Center are just to name a few that provide shoppers with a combination of Western and local brands. For the young ones, most malls have an amusement level dedicated to entertaining children with rides, games, and activities. Serafi Mega Mall includes all of the above with the addition of a Danube Hyper grocery store. Across from it, a full size IKEA provides you with any interior need you might have. 58 DESTINATION JEDDAH

But Tahlia isn’t only about fun and games. For the businessman or woman, Tujjar Jeddah is a business-oriented center located towards the very beginning of the street. Venue, the equivalent of a gentleman’s club, offers an exclusive and professional atmosphere to conduct meetings and conferences. Additionally, all three cell phone providers have outlets located on Tahlia for easy access to all of your communication requirements. ATMs and bank branches are also readily available on the street. But a word of caution, since Tahlia has it all, all love to go there. Therefore, on weekends it can get quite congested with traffic, so it’s always wise to leave a few minutes earlier to make an appointment on time. Tahlia starts from the Corniche (the coast) down to Makkah Road and is constantly being renovated and redesigned with new shops and restaurants. With the relaxed criteria for construction, taller buildings are

being erected on Tahlia, while adding a much-needed change to the Jeddah skyline. With all the amenities available, it’s no wonder that Tahlia is considered Jeddah’s—and possibly the Kingdom’s— entertainment hub.

DINING

AROUND TOWN

Shogun means “commander of troops” and to someone who has dined at the handful of authentic Japanese restaurants in Jeddah, this comes as no surprise because the Shogun Lounge may as well be the top restaurant in its class. Just what is so special about the place? For starters, the restaurant is beautifully decorated and its exceptionally grand space is utilized in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Large wooden panels embedded with Japanese art and kanji characters illustrating the restaurant’s name add a certain charm to the ambience and reflect the theme of Shogun Lounge. 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Usually, the best time to gauge the quality of service and the food of a restaurant is by going there when it is at full occupancy and at the popular Shogun Lounge, this seems to be the scenario for each night. Teeming with customers even during the middle of the week, the restaurant seems up to the challenge of keeping on its toes and by dishing out its fine cuisine to satisfy each and every Japanese food connoisseur. The eclectic menu at Shogun Lounge, which also features Chinese dishes, is well laid out and lists everything from soups and salads to tempuras, sashimi, sushi, maki and more. The food itself, such as the Miso Soup with Crab, Vegetable and Ebi Tempura and the Beef Tenderloin and Chicken Teppan-Yaki are all excellent in their presentation and fantastic in taste. Also worth ordering is the Mixed Shogun Lounge Sushi, which turns out to be a lovely platter of this healthy Japanese delicacy. Desserts and drinks are as great as the rest of the items in the menu. The luxurious dining atmosphere and the simply delicious Japanese cuisine is a positive aspect of Shogun Lounge. Seating is divine, especially on the first floor which has lounge style seating. The portions are quite fulfilling, especially when it comes to serious eaters, and the great hospitality shown by the waiters makes you want to visit again. Reservation is required for the mostly packed Shogun Lounge.

Pearls Cafe Photography by: DJ Team

Brandishing a tasteful color scheme of Purple and White, a distinctive amalgamation, and even tastier food, Pearls Café has been acknowledged for its uber-cool décor and an inviting atmosphere since it opened a few years ago in Jeddah. The name of the café seems to reflect a great love for the Red Sea and its bountiful treasures. Fashionable yet laid back, Pearls Café is a place where art thrives in the form of original paintings hung on its walls and in masterfully prepared dishes that encompass a wide variety of salads, appetizers and main courses. The expansive interior is complimented by a bar counter where hot and cold beverages are served and also by a comfy waiting area, replete with a small library of books for any guests waiting to be seated. The café owners’ keen interest in books is evident even in the menu, which not only lists the food items available but also has articles and recipes inside the complimentary magazine-like menu. All eateries, whether housed in a grand building or something small, rest their fate on the quality of the dishes being served by them. In the case of Pearls Café, it is with flying colors by which they surpass the taste and quality test. Everything is prepared fresh and some of the dishes are even reminiscent of home-cooked food; the salads and pasta dishes ring very true in this regard. Even worldwide favorites like Chicken Breast Florentine and Rib Eye Steak have a unique taste that Pearls can call its own.

Japanese food enthusiasts will find themselves indulging in house specialties that consist of Sushi, Maki and Sashimi while cocktail lovers will face a daunting task of selecting which drink to order. The Snow Bank is definitely recommended for its amazing flavor. You can finish off your meal by indulging in one of the variety of desserts available or by just relaxing and having sheesha which is available at the café. Customers coming in to café can always expect a friendly service from the staff. With friends or family in tow, one can spend a long time just sitting in the enjoyable atmosphere of Pearls Café after the appetite has been contented and that makes it a jewel of an eatery.

il Gusto Photography by: DJ Team

il Gusto, a small, relatively new Italian eatery on Palestine Street, prides itself of having a large variety of pastas and pizzas that are authentic to Italian cuisine. Located in one of Jeddah’s most vibrant commercial areas, il Gusto is focused on serving quality Italian food to their corporate clientele during weekdays, and to families and friends in the evenings and on weekends. Despite its small size, the restaurant has separate dining areas for families and for single patrons. The interior design plays a major role on the whole dining experience at il Gusto. Earth colors dominate here, and in addition to the comfortable seating, the whole ambiance radiates a warm and lovely feeling as you dine and socialize. The design is influenced by modern, renaissance Italian art and by Leonardo Da Vinci’s work in particular. You will feel as though you are in some sort of an art museum. But instead of not being allowed to drink, eat or touch anything as is the case at a museum or a gallery, at il Gusto you can do all of the above and enjoy while doing so. The menu selection at il Gusto is focused on pizzas and pastas, but the management has plans to introduce an updated menu featuring more main courses starting from March 2009. The dishes to try are the delicious Fungi Al Norma pizza, with mozzarella, mushrooms, pepperoni and oregano, and in pasta we recommend the Penne All’ Arrabbiata, a lightly spiced penne with black olives and herbs. The pizzas are cooked in il Gusto’s own wood oven. Salads are also delectable, such as the light Bella Vita salad, or the classic Caesar salad for something more filling.

Delifrance MysteryDiners Delifrance takes quality, consistency and hygiene very seriously and this shows in all three of their outlets that are to be found in Jeddah. A bakery, coffee shop and even fine dining all rolled in to one, Delifrance is found to be very strict when it comes to using the best raw materials for their appetizing food items. Having been in the business for over twenty-five years, it is no wonder that this French eatery knows how to satisfy their customers’ cravings. Going for a contemporary design in each outlet, the interior of the outlets is a great departure from the quick snack style of locations back in France. Tailored to meet the expectations of its customers with a thoroughly stylish café / restaurant, Delifrance in the Middle East, and especially in KSA, is setting new standards for the brand. Matching the expectations of its Saudi customers who are looking for healthy food products, Delifrance has many items on its menu that are made from fresh ingredients and are chosen for their healthy, natural goodness. With more than forty kinds of fillings and breads, there is no doubt that the huge selection provided is more than any person could ask for.

La Cuisine brings diners closer to authentic

French cuisine without them having to board a plane to Paris. The interior is modestly decorated, but for a classy restaurant such as this, it would be best to update the look in order to create a uniquely French atmosphere, yet again La Cuisine loyal customers feel comfortable in its familiar ambuance. Tables are perfectly spaced from one another and atop the white crisp linen on each are elegant cutlery and elegant bottles containing nonalcoholic Chardonnay or Merlot.

The menu at La Cuisine includes beef, veal and chicken dishes that are mostly exquisite French recipes. The specialty of the house is “Café du Paris”, a complete meal for one person with a choice of dessert, is what I ordered but not before ordering the “Soup of the Day” and a hot appetizer “Escargots à la Bourguignonne.” The soup “Potato and Leek”, was on the bland side but a little salt did the trick. Next to arrive were the escargots (snails) which tasted pretty good considering that La Cuisine is one of the few places in Jeddah that serves them. The delicious plate of fresh Boston lettuce salad topped with walnuts with its special dressing marked the start of the “Café du Paris” special. Then came time for the entrée the Entercôte; strips of premium beef cooked in herbs and a special sauce. Well-done strips of beef emerged from under the coating of the sauce and it was delicious; worth going back for again. The final masterstroke was the Crème Brulé which is superb, the browned sugar on top creates was close to perfection. The customers that come here belong to the higher social strata and the prices speak for themselves, but it is money well spent. The quality of food in general, generous portions, and caring staff make for a wonderful dining experience. Location: Palestine St. Tel: +966 -2-6630363

Interview

With Dr. Wael Kaawach MD, MBA Consultant, Orthopaedic Surgery Dr. Kaawach is the head of the Orthopaedic Specialty Clinics and a Harvard graduate who has years of experience in treating musculoskeletal diseases. Dr. Kaawach kindly answered our questions about his establishing of the Orthopaedic Specialty Clinics and about bone and joint ailments amongst the population of Saudi Arabia.

What is the main idea behind the Orthopaedic Specialty Clinics and how did the idea develop?

The idea is to create a new treatment model for patients who suffer from musculoskeletal disorders by concentrating on orthopaedic subspecialties. There are research studies conducted in the USA and Europe which show the superiority of diagnosis and treatment when performed through specialized facilities and by specialized personnel. We believe that such service is needed and the OSC possesses all the qualifications required to provide such services, at highest quality level, to everyone.

What makes this project different? What differentiates you?

Being a multiple sub-specialty clinic, we give specialized care and each clinic is directed and supervised by sub-specialty North American and European Board certified physicians and therapists. Each physician has had five years of structured training program with at least one extra year training “Fellowship” in the sub specialty he/she is currently directing.

What are your points of strength?

Our strength is basically the pride we take in the quality of service that we provide, but some of the strong points that necessarily make up our strength are as follows: *We are focused on serving our patients by providing exceptional care in every Bone & Joint sub-specialty in accordance with the highest international standards. *We provide high quality physiotherapy treatment conducted by German specialist with extremely rich experience in this domain.

Dr. Wael Kaawach

*We are advocates for patient education and development through educational materials (brochures and booklets). *The facility structure and location are well studied to provide accessibility and complete comfort for our patients. *We invest in our employees’ education and well being.

What are the major musculoskeletal disorders found in KSA?

The rate of osteoporosis is high in Saudi Arabia among men and women. According to our experience the rate is higher than other countries like in Europe and the US. The reason is low exposure to the sun and inadequate diet. Then there are sports related injuries. We witness high level of such injuries among schools students and sport clubs members. The reason is the lack of proper sport training. Some other disorders that are found in our patients include joints osteoarthritis (knees, hips and shoulders) in adults and scoliosis and foot and knee deformities in children.

What is your role towards the society?

We owe our community a lifetime commitment to serve and educate our people aspiring for a healthier and happier society. We have set up standards for the success of our project and being a socially responsible healthcare provider, it is a corner stone for us. The aim is also to inform people and raise their awareness about musculo skeletal disorders and about the prevention and treatment of such disorders. Our nature is such that we are ready to always extend our help to all organizations, schools and clubs that are interested in this process, that are willing to make a difference alongside us. RED SEA COAST

Obhur Creek by: Jessica Stockwell Photography by: Nizar Naghi

A visit to Obhur Creek north of Jeddah brings you closer to luxury yachts, a fun boat ride for the day, sea diving trips or even jet-skis that provide recreational entertainment at sunset. From jet skis, small canopied touring boats and glass-bottom boats for viewing marine life to 55 ft. captain-managed yachts for deep sea fishing and 110 ft. luxury cruise yachts—you can find something to fit your style when you decide to take in the beauty of the Red Sea. One of Jeddah’s primary attractions is just a few minutes north of Jeddah—Obhur Creek. The creek has been a long time destination for vacation, recreation and a summer retreat from congested busy urban centers near and far. Obhur Creek, better described as a marina bay, is home to a number of marinas such as Al Ahlam Marina, Red Sea Marina and the Jeddah Yacht Marina; all well established marinas for yacht and recreational boat owners. 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH

New resorts and marinas are taking form to help redesign the coastline north of Jeddah into a more family friendly marine recreation and water sports area. It’s outside the bay to the open Red Sea for scheduled and authorized cruise and dive trips. However, for a cafe by the sea at sunset, a day pass to one of the resort beaches or dinner seaside Obhur Creek is where you will find activity. Obhur Creek has a selection of membership resorts, restaurants and marinas on the South bank of the creek and private membership only resort communities and residential estate homes on both the south and the north banks. Al Ahlam Marina, on the south side of Obhur Corniche, is a popular group day-trip marina with Dream Divers organizing the trips. It also has an outdoor cafe and wave breakers bayside wooden deck to enjoy the view OBHUR CREEK TOUR-The Jeddah Yacht Club & Marina is a membership only resort community. However, jet ski rentals, boats by the hour (fee varies, approximate costs for hourly fee: from SR 100 for up to 4-6 people to SR 1000, 45 ft. yacht for up to 20 people) or an ultra chic four day cruise aboard the Kokiyn Luxury Cruiser can all be arranged through the marina. Mohsen, with the Jeddah Yacht Club & Marina located at the prestigious Al Nakheel Village on the north bank of the creek, was the captain who directed our short and infor-mative Obhur Creek tour at sunset. Public beaches along the South bank were teeming with families and vacationing school children. The bay filled up with ski-jets jumping waves, canopied-flat-motor touring boats and a collection of docked luxury yachts waiting for their captains, crew and passengers.

TRAVEL TRENDS

Sky IsThe Limit by: Sameen Anis

With the world fearfully balancing on the edge of recession, traveling is becoming a luxury in itself for many. The dwindling statistics of airline bookings and hotel occupancies are causing traveling business executives to frown. Their hopes for continuing profitability depend appreciably on a stable traffic in the first and business class cabins. So for those of you who are either corporate travelers or people with generous pockets, even in the global financial crisis, the airlines are welcoming you more warmly than ever before. An outlook on 2009 of comparatively less faltering travel demands in the Middle East and Latin America, as well as an attempt to counter the declining global travel trends, has resulted in airlines rushing to entice first class travelers with the most lavish services in the sky. Here is a list of the top-five first class carriers (in ascending order), as awarded by the prestigious World Airline Awards in 2008, and a description of the high end services they provide to their select clientele. 78 DESTINATION JEDDAH

On a level close to home is the Kayala Airlines, a Saudi luxury air carrier that is dedicated to providing a superior experience to travelers flying within Saudi Arabia and to the cities of Dubai and Beirut. Catering mainly to VIPs and business people, Kayala operates with the special needs of this segment in mind. It is owned and operated by Saudi-based National Air Services (NAS). Kayala has its own private terminals and a committed staff catering to check-in, luggage handling and all other travel needs of the passenger. The fleet is designed to provide the best in comfort and convenience and is fitted with premium cabins. Al Kayala also offers chartered aircrafts, currently A319 carriers, for non-scheduled flights.

Voted the ‘Best Airlines in the Middle East’ by the Business Traveler magazine, Qatar Airways has also succeeded in landing on the list of Newsweek Magazine’s eight most luxurious airlines. As evident from these credentials, Qatar Airways knows how to exceed their passenger’s expectations. Their promise of delivering the best in luxury starts right from the passengers’ own location in Doha from where they are picked in a chauffeur driven premium BMW 7 Series car and driven straight to the aircraft for boarding and departure, or vice versa in case of arrival. Should the passenger happen to be at the Doha Airport in Qatar, the First Class Premium Terminal offers a Jacuzzi, a massage in the spa, sleeping and shower facilities and a duty-free mall! Onboard Qatar Airways, the spacious and comfortable seating can provide the experience of a relaxing full flat bed with feather duvets, a comfortable work office or even a 5-star restaurant. The latter is enhanced by a delectable cuisine presenting a ten-course meal including delicatessen such as caviar, lobster, Arabic mezzas and fine chocolate. The First Class Lounge onboard, exclusive to the First Class travelers, offers space to socialize and unwind and make the journey a pure treat.

Thai Royal, the First Class service by Thai Airways, treats its customers as nothing less than royalty. So it comes as no surprise that Thai Airways is in the top-five Best First Class Airlines awarded by World Airline Awards and is also one of the world’s eight most luxurious airlines as listed by Newsweek magazine in 2008. First class passengers traveling by Thai Airways are escorted to their own luxurious lounge at the Bangkok airport; featuring slumber rooms, shower facilities, à la Carte dining, Jacuzzi, and a spa for a traditional Thai massage. Onboard are ultimate in comfort, electronically controlled, 180-degree reclining seats and a state-of-the-art entertainment system for pure amusement and leisure. The cuisine is an assortment of Thai, Oriental and Continental dishes open for selection and choice to satiate every passenger’s palate. 80 DESTINATION JEDDAH

with plush duvets for the utmost comfort.

Now here is a carrier that truly knows how to soar higher in to the sky. Honored by the World Airline Awards as the overall No.1 Best Airline and No.2 in the Best First Class Airline category, this carrier also flies its way into the list of Newsweek’s top eight most luxurious airlines of the world. In the First Class cabin, passengers find themselves in the lap of luxury as they settle into the regal seats providing the maximum peaceful solitude with additional sliding cabin doors and window blinds. The leather upholstered seats can recline to any degree adjusting into a sun-deck lounge or a full flat bed. The efficient space design has allowed for a vanity corner complete with a mirror as well as a full length wardrobe.

It is entertainment all the way to their destination for a First Class passenger with the personal 23-inch LCD screen that is complete with surround sound and high-tech noise canceling headphones to capture the best quality of sound. The in-flight cuisine is prepared by a staff of world renowned chefs and presented with fine tableware specially designed by Givenchy. The Salvatore Ferragamo amenities (including Givenchy sleeper suits!) and the modish restrooms featuring a Hollywood sized mirror and enhanced lighting ensure that passengers can freshen up in style as they exit the plane for their final destination.

Aside from these grandly ‘suites’ is the biggest seat onboard, upholstered in leather and trimmed in Mahogany wood and which can be adjusted to provide a bed

Ranked as the Best First Class Airline in 2008 by the World Airline Awards, this 5-star carrier provides distinguished luxury products and services both in the airport and onboard the aircraft. The First Class experience with Cathay Pacific begins at the Hong Kong International Airport where highly advanced, concierge-like electronic consoles facilitate the passenger check-in. The First Class lounge offers peaceful reading rooms, exquisite spas and cafes for relaxation before the time to fly. Once inside the First Class cabin, Cathay Pacific offers its premium traveler not a seat but a suite consisting of privacy screens on the aisles and between the centre seats that offer personal space. The cozy seats are furnished with a massage function, extendable side seat, and a button that can convert the seat into an 81-inch long comfortable bed. To add the final touch to a most relaxing slumber, the traveler is presented luxury duvets, pillows and a sleeper suit. Passengers on long-haul flights are offered special amenity kits including Acca Kappa products from Italy and Victorinox travel bags for men and Darphin products from France and Ipa-Nima travel bags for women. For the hungry passenger, Cathay Pacific offers an assortment of Asian and International cuisine, all freshly prepared in their state-of-the-art galley that has landed Cathay Pacific the Best

First Class Onboard Catering Award for 2008. It is the only airline to boast of rice cookers, skillets and toasters onboard. Importantly enough, all dishes are made to order so first class passengers can go à la carte. There is also a selection of the top picks in wine as well as freshly brewed coffee and Chinese tea for those who prefer non-alcoholic drinks. All in all, realms of luxury attain new heights when traveling First Class with Cathay Pacific.

Akin to its burgeoning economy, India’s Jet Airways has outdone many other carriers in winning the title of the Best First Class Airlines by the Business Traveler magazine. Its First Class suite for each passenger features dual sliding doors, offering the ultimate in privacy, a wardrobe, and the world’s longest bed in the air at 83 inches. The newly introduced phased mood-lightning system enhances the ambience with serenity. For more fun and entertainment is guaranteed with the 23-inch flat screen to watch any of several movies, channels and programs. Dining choices are listed in an extensive menu, and the five-course meal is served on hand painted Bernardaud porcelain dinnerware. The personal amenity kit holds Bvlgari EDT White Tea Spray, a Gillette razor and shaving cream, facial sprays, sleeper suits, eye masks, slippers and other provisions. Jet Airways gives its best to ensure its passengers arrive in style no matter where or how long the trip.

These were but a few of the top most luxurious airlines and there are scores of others such as the Qantas, Emirates, Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. If luxury and elegance is the traveling style for one then there is a range of choice in the airlines that believe, when it comes to serving, the sky is the limit.

Ahmad Qandil: Jeddah’s Popular Literature Pioneer By Mahmoud Sabbagh

He was born in al-‘Allwai, of Al-Yemen district, in Old Jeddah – a deep-rooted and authentic environment that is fraught with simplicity, kindness, solidarity and social cohesion. In such an intimate environment, the idiosyncratic Saudi poet Ahmad Qandil (1911-1979) was brought-up in our modern cultural milieu. His popular literature helped in shaping the city’s character, and his documenting efforts, have preserved its folk literature from vanishing. Besides his key role in the cultural ‘modernism’ movement in the Arabian Peninsula, Qandil got most of his recognition due to his early work on documenting Jeddah’s folk literature; whether it was slang poetry, folk narratives or oral literature. He is the crowned pioneer of satirical poetry as the first poet employed the slang Hijazi dialect into local poetry. In his poetical work “AlMirkaz”, he signified social and cultural life aspects of the Hijazi cities, approaching the prevailing social topics at his time in patios dialect and in a style of criticism, humor and irony. As in his short-narratives collection; “Abu-Arram and the fellows”, he recorded the city’s majestic characters and mythologies. Navigating around Jeddah’s old districts; Al-Sham (The northern district), AlMazloum, Al-Yemen (The

90 DESTINATION JEDDAH

southern district), Al-Bahar (The Sea District), he was, remarkably able to introduce its long- inveterate characters to the public readers. You cannot miss it with characters like, Abu-Arram, uncle Salmeen, Zariefah, Bebe Zainab, Al-Dujairah (the vanishing hitchhiker Lady) of the “Khonji lane” which was next to Al-Honod borough and attached to Badkouk’s house, Bisbasah, Habambah, Al-Khernata (the sissy boy), uncle Abu Tiriheeb, Ham-Alliel (The Jinni) and other real or legendry characters! Jeddah played a central role in Qandil’s literature in both of his slang and high poetry. He has frequently expressed his passion for Jeddah in his modern poetry. In what’s known as the best written poem dedicated to Jeddah in Arabic, he said: O Beloved Jeddah! You have a special status in the heart. Your love is sacred like a magical box full of secrets. You are an arid port and town, But from the enduring compassion! In the slang poetry, Qandil has written much fantasy honoring works dedicated for describing the city over its chronological developments. The old Jeddah, surrounded by its old historical wall, was centrally present in Qandil poetry along with its people, districts, mosques and traditions, described as thus;

The old Jeddah, may Allah raise it from any hardship - the source of opulence and raising suffering. A Historical City – even before Islam came to mankind, and later the vestibule of Mecca, Special with its mosques of O’kash, Al-Hanfi - Al-Shaf’i and al-Me’mar with its well. Along with united districts remained as a family - lived in long sincere affection. All brought together, from the bottom part of Al-sham, AlMazloum, Al-A’alwi - lead to Yemen, and Al-Bahar. Furthermore, he has portrayed “modern Jeddah” as a dancing goddess – just when the city was expanding beyond its historical walls: Have you glimpsed Jeddah, nearing the shore? A dancing goddess scattering the sands! As a virgin from heaven, whiling in both affection and enjoyment It is without a doubt that the refined genius Ahmad Qandil is a Jeddawi milestone and amongst its key-figures. His literature, profoundly inspired by Jeddah’s old districts’ spirit and harmony, is indelibly engraved in the city’s memory and described as its endured, genuine voice that will last forever.
