1.1 Introduction and Context Under the supervision of Evangelic church in Cameroon (The Parish of Buea) to instinct the spirit of hard work in the mind of youths in view of the Human Resource needs by 2035, Youth Coordination under the auspices of the Parish Pastor (Rev. Ndeupe Simapi Michel), organized an award ceremony, titled ‘Excellence Award 2015’. Through the event process, the participants and laureates expressed optimism that the introduction of this new project that recognized excellence would enable school goers to adopt a competitive mindset in order to better address some of our development challenges. In the general human development framework and in order to provide the nation's human resources with the skills necessary for building an emerging Cameroonian economy by 2035, the Government intends to lay special emphasis on the training of human capital through sustained implementation of the Education Sector Strategy. One of its main objectives as outlined in the Growth & Employment Strategic Plan is to build capacity on life skills to fight uncivil behavior amongst adolescents and youths based on a dynamic balance between religion and education in preparation for the development of an economy geared towards industrialization. In order to achieve this lofty objective, Youth Coordination designed a project that identifies and celebrates outstanding students while organizing revision classes for the weaker ones in EEC church, Buea parish. This aims to equip the future workforce with essential mindset based knowledge in compliance with the new competence based teaching approach, brilliantly introduced by the Ministries of Education aiming at meeting with the functional outcomes (mindset) for an entrepreneurial evolution of Cameroon.
1.2 Proceedings and Outcomes of the Events In the opening , the Pastor pray and presented the event to God for his blessing after which a word of welcome was presented by the president of the Youth Coordination. The next part of the seminar was characterized by issuing of awards in which laureates engaged in collecting their prizes for the most meritorious one and certificate for the others with the terms of references, in two different groups as follows: Group 1: Outstanding fellows of each Category, Group 2: Best Fellows of all categories At the end of the prized sessions, the church community was buoyant, some had joyful smile on their face, some were meditating while some were whispering, next was a vote of thanks from 3|Page
the Youth Coordination Vice President on behalf of all the other participants and Laureates. The resolutions and way forward were also presented by the Youth Coordination president. This was closely followed by a closing remark by the parish Pastor on behalf of church community.
Post Seminar Panel Meeting at the Ministers Cabinet Later in the evening the very day, there was a panel meeting with stakeholders on whatapp to discuss on event resolutions, challenges and way forward. This session was attended by: Our sponsor, the Youth Coordination team, and adviser from the previous board. The discussions centered on policy, financing and a way forward.
1.3 Conclusion, Recommendations and Way Forward The overall objective of the event was to present some young people who have been hard working in their studies to the community in order to set a platform which will harness student abilities to produce similar result for the subsequent academic years. This falls in line with the vision 2020 of industrialization and eventually the vision 2035 of an emerging Cameroonian economy. What came out unique about this project is the introduction of the Guidance revision classes and the process of recycling of student in a professionalized manner as proposed in the project (this was a component absent in previous projects) and was highly appreciated and approved by the Community; who saw it as a stitch in time if there is going to be sustainability and impact in the way students are guided from now on. The Final Statement of the event culminated on the expression of hope and optimism by participants and laureates who appreciated the initiative of involving them at the initial stage and believed that with the introduction of this new project which complements the student cycle of studying, the future work force of this country will not only be equipped with mindset needed to move the country forward but also tackle the challenges that will come their way with relative ease. The event on “Excellence Award 2015’, recognizes that: 1. There is an absolute need for recognition of efforts among school goers to promote the spirit of excellence. 4|Page
2. There is a need for the existence of a holistic platform which monitors the learning process among school goers to correlate their mindset toward nation building. 3. The need to foresee the continuous performance of meritorious student by the creation of structure which facilitates exchange and recycling. 4. The need for the government to develop competence based public-private partnerships. 5. The need of an enabling environment to construct productive mindset in students in the near future.
