WOMAN OF STEEL Bring Your A-Game, No Excuses
ISSUE 106 NOVEMBER 2017
FROM THE EDITOR
Your Health, Your Wealth What a time to be alive in this day and age. We are spoiled for choice when it comes to the enjoyment of our daily needs like food and shelter, but most importantly, we have countless resources to care for ourselves. This issue is all about maximizing those resources. We bring you a list of the gyms, fitness centers, and fitness experts – and there are so many, it would be an effort now to make excuses about maintaining your fitness! We also feature an interview with Saudi public health pioneer Dr. Zohair Sebai on the improvements our healthcare industry has seen, a testament to this wonderful trend of putting our health on top of our list of concerns. Our contributors also walk us through sidestepping obstacles – read about working out on a budget, or how to lower your sugar intake. We also present our poster guide to car ownership, to commemorate the Royal decree allowing women to drive on the streets of Saudi Arabia. Congratulations, my dear Saudis. We’ve come a long way together, and we’ll face this exciting new chapter of our history in good health.

GETTING AROUND JEDDAH Services for people with special needs By Nadia Sakkal
A functional society integrates all groups within it, people with special needs included. Providing an accessible infrastructure, an acceptant culture and inclusive policies emphasizes that they’re equally valued members of society, advocates disability consultant, Kholoud Al Haddad.
1. BAYNA YADAYYA KEEP THIS IN MIND Here are some tips on how to interact with people with disabilities in a manner that is not offensive.
1.
Behave as you would with anyone else. Don’t focus on their disability but on them as a person. This also applies to parents of children with special needs.
2.
When we’re able to do that, we obliterate the majority of the barriers they face. Jeddah is becoming more accessible for people with disabilities but information is difficult to find, so we interviewed Al Haddad and founder of Hope KSA Dr. Uzma Raheem, who provided crucial information to those with special needs and their caretakers.

IMPROVED HEALTHCARE IN THE KINGDOM An Interview With Public Health Pioneer Dr. Zohair Sebai During the 1950s, only a couple of hospitals had 10 Saudi physicians, which did not even represent 10% of the total number of physicians in the country. But after five decades, there was a rapid growth in public health, and currently there are 462 hospitals and 21,000 Saudi doctors raising the ratio to more than 25% overall. Saudi Arabia is experiencing a major demographic and epidemiological transition, represented by a growing burden of non-communicable diseases, while population expectation of quality care services has been noticeably going up. In addition, quantitative and qualitative development of healthcare services have led to the improvement of reproductive health, maternal and child healthcare services, the reduction of mortality rates and immunization, and to a decrease in vaccinepreventable diseases and the eradication of poliomyelitis at the national level. Since your first book Health in Saudi Arabia Vol.1 (published in 1985), what primary changes have occurred?
Islam calls for many acts that lead to a healthy lifestyle – moderation, and the prohibition of alcohol, drugs, adultery and gambling. It emphasizes cleanliness as part of faith and calls for love, understanding and acceptance of others.
We have more hospitals, hospital beds, primary healthcare centers and colleges of medicine – the health budget soared to unprecedented levels. However, the orientation of health services remain curative. There are many efforts to apply preventive and promotive medicine activities, and we are looking for more.
It is recommended to stop eating when 80% full. Do you think Saudis are following this recommendation?
Obesity and its related health problems are a global epidemic, and Saudis are following the global pattern. Proper health education can help to a great extent in solving obesity, as it would translate into healthy lifestyles. This is the most difficult part of health education. From a Qur’anic perspective, Allah says, “Eat and Drink but not to excess.” Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) advised his companions to eat moderately, but if one must add more to his
What is the role of Islam in promoting public health in Saudi Arabia?
What kind of public health changes should we expect in Saudi Arabia in the next 10 years?
Saudi Arabia is adopting a 2030 health strategy. The main tool to implement this ambitious strategy is to prepare the right healthcare personnel, who would carry the holistic approach to health. The process has already started and we are looking forward to dramatic changes in the health services system. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!
Promoting health & positivity through body acceptance By Nadia Sakkal
When Lama found the wedding dress of her dreams, she was told she’d need to lose 3 kgs if she wanted to look great in it, so she began a strict diet. All went well until two months later, when Lama had pushed herself to look like the “perfect” girls she saw on Instagram and TV. She eventually reached her ‘ideal weight’ but was obsessed with her body image and constantly wondered what she looked like, routinely checking the numbers of her scale, which haunted her, and she’d think, “Am I eating too much? Am I exercising enough?” As she got tired of the mental battle, she sought girls on Instagram who have been in a similar battle, and found Christie Begnell, Megan Crabbe and others who advocated body positivity. Begnell, a 25-year-old artist, challenges common beliefs about eating disorders by drawing her thoughts and feelings. Crabbe shares a similar experience, and wrote Body Posi Power, which aims to help people make peace with their bodies. Teaching people to appreciate and accept their own and others’ body types, the Body Positive Movement advocates that we are all beautiful and deserving of love. A person’s value does not come from their physical appearance, and everyone, regardless of size, age, race, or appearance, is worthy. It argues that you can’t judge whether a person is healthy just from the way they look; anyone can suffer from unhealthy eating habits.
34 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017
This principle encourages people to protect their body from harmful diets and lifestyles. Exercise all you want, not because you hate what your body looks like, but because you care for it. At the same time, don’t eat “whatever you want” (i.e. unhealthy food) every day, because that goes against the principle of caring for your body. Lama represents many men and women in Saudi, who are always trying to reach an unmaintainable, non-existent perfection. Fashion stylist Noha Sindi explains that around the country, many teenage girls struggle with the ‘size zero’ mindset and young female adults tend to have a negative self-perception. This, she says, is likely to change, like it did for Lama, who, when she heard other girls express their love for themselves even though their body wasn’t “perfect,” began preaching that message to herself. Lama learned there was no such thing as one ideal, healthy body, and that her own body – which was shamed in mainstream media – ought to be celebrated with its own uniqueness. Over time, she grew confident, aiming to no longer feeling the urge to compare her body to others’. Lama adopted a new attitude toward exercise and felt free to eat what she loved in a way that nourished her body. She was happy at last. If you’re struggling with accepting your body, there are many resources available to you in the city that’ll help you be body positive. 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017
If you notice your son or daughter having a complex relationship with food and if you think they’re associating their self-worth with their body, here are tips from Sohair Ayoub, clinical psychologist at ACT Center:
•Avoid criticizing your children when they display unhealthy eating habits. Instead, try to understand why, for example, they refuse to eat. •Avoid talking in front of them about the phobia of gaining weight. Rather, show support, love and acceptance regardless of their physical appearance. •Help them understand their personal worth does not come from their physical appearance. Advocate that they are beautiful the way they are and there is more to them than what they look like in the mirror. •Talk to your children about all the amazing abilities their body can do.

GET FIT ON A SHOESTRING BUDGET By Amr Banaja
Be a healthy chef.
It’s entirely possible to get healthy and fit while staying committed to your monthly budget. If you're looking to shed the excess weight you put on during the festive season, or just tone up in general, here are some pocket-friendly ways to do it.
Try these healthy cooking Instagrams!
Put those shoes to the test!
Do your health a favor by walking, running or jogging. With a bit of determination and a few chosen places, you can quickly make brisk walking a part of your daily routine. If you’re a frequent online shopper, consider taking a stroll across the mall the next time you feel like shopping. While fulfilling your fashion crave, you’ll be covering a lot of ground between the shops and burning a lot of calories in the process.

Bring out your cleaning ninja.
Washing utensils, dusting, sweeping and mopping – turn these mundane chores into a fun workout. Put on your favorite music and get to work. Not only will you burn a tremendous amount of calories, but you'll also be rewarded with a sparkling clean house.
Find a workout partner.
Need motivation? Tag a friend along. You will motivate each other constantly and keep track of each other’s performance throughout. It also automatically triggers a competitive attitude to do better than them!
Stay hydrated.
Drinking adequate water helps get rid of toxins and extra fats in the body. You need at least 8 cups of water per day and it's best to have a warm cup first thing in the morning - and, if you can, throughout the day. If you like flavored drinks, create your own detox water by soaking overnight fruits or vegetables (such as cucumbers) with herbs like cilantro or mint. These detox methods are full of vitamins and minerals, plus they are light on the wallet and the tummy, as compared to readymade, sugar-loaded juices.
Become your own trainer.
You don't need to spend unnecessary riyals on a personal trainer. Go online and pick your activities – Yoga, Zumba, Aerobics, for instance – as there's a wide variety of tutorials available. Invest in some essential equipment like a pull-up bar, dumbbells or a jumping rope.

Did you know that 90% of people with diabetes have Type 2? When you think about 54 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017
it, this comes as no surprise, especially with increased consumption of fast foods and sugar-dense diets. Unhealthy food, in addition to the influence of technology and social media, has brought us closer together as a society, but at the expense of our health. It’s the perfect recipe for an unhealthy lifestyle. The World Health Organization estimates that over 382 million people around the world have been diagnosed with diabetes. This represents just over 5% of the world population. Now, when you realize that a whopping
23.9% of Saudi Arabia’s population is affected by diabetes (almost 5 times the global average!), you
SYMPTOMS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES INCLUDE: • Constantly feeling very tired and thirsty • Cuts & wounds take longer to heal • Blurred vision • Losing weight without trying • Frequent urination

Why is it common that we all have at least one family member that suffers from diabetes? What have we been doing wrong? Diabetes is one of the fastest-growing diseases in the world and Saudi Arabia is no exception. On the one hand, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease which is mainly diagnosed in children. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, mainly affects adults over the age of 40 and is a consequence of both genetics and lifestyle habits.

can really begin to grasp the gravity and extent of this health epidemic. Why is the rate of diabetes high in Saudi? For many of the same reasons that the obesity level is so high: we have become less mobile, and we are on a ‘constant feast’ of high glycemic index carbs – foods that raise blood sugar levels too quickly and are then followed by a ‘crash’.
TO REDUCE YOUR RISK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES: • Get checked regularly by your Doctor • Move more often • Exercise regularly • Eat more low glycemic index foods
Yes, you choose your lifestyle! Research continues to confirm that your health and well-being is about 75% lifestyle and 25% genes. Taking responsibility for your health is the most important step to lead a healthy lifestyle. By avoiding your responsibility, you become part of the problem, but by choosing to live a healthy lifestyle, you play a direct part in the solution, not only for yourself but for those around you. To be safe and to treat diabetes, healthy food should be the approach. Healthier food options include oatmeal, sweet potatoes, lentils and legumes, which all help maintain blood sugar levels. Increased mobility can be in the form of taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or walking on any of Jeddah’s famous ‘Mamshas.’ Exercising should be an essential part of everyone’s life – find something that motivates you and stick to it.

THE FOOD OF WELLNESS Are we truly what we eat? Our choices of food and drink will probably be incorporated in the building of every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies. According to a modern branch of science known as Epigenetics, the type of food we consume influences the process by which genes in our bodies are either activated or inactivated. This means we are not bound by our genes, and that God gave us the ability to activate and express positive genes while repressing diseasecausing negative genes, by properly choosing our living environment, which includes what we eat and drink.
Therefore, we can choose the most beneficial portion to “keep our strength” while restricting ourselves to “a few mouthfuls” which do not exceed a third of our capacity. Having a third of your capacity means to leave the table while you still have an appetite and can eat twice as much, without giving in readily to the drive of hunger. As for the Prophetic command “to keep one's strength,” it means to eat food which provides us with our need of nutritional elements.
Studies have widely addressed the concept of "Low Calorie Intake" which is defined as a reduction in the amount of food we consume without resulting in malnutrition. This concept is a practical application of Prophetic guidance; "a few mouthfuls to keep one's strength."
The divine guidance and prophetic teachings have laid down basic rules for us. God says “And eat and drink, but do not be excessive,” and the Prophet PBUH says “No human has filled a vessel worse than his stomach. A few bites are enough for a man to keep his strength, but if he must, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath.” “A few mouthfuls” signifies the quantity of food, while “to keep one's strength” denotes eating a type of food with a high nutritional value. 60 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017 ADVERTORIAL

EAT AND DRINK, REASONABLY
WHAT IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND WELLNESS IN FOOD?
The key rule in pursuing wellness in food is that the nearer your food is to its natural source, before passing through any type of processing, and the more you know about the source of your food, the healthier it becomes and the more wellness it will bring you. However, the disregard for managing the wellness of food has led to the widespread of the most dangerous illness of our time; such as obesity.
ARE YOU DRINKING ENOUGH WATER?
Managing nutritional wellness requires giving priority to the water we drink. Studies indicate that many of the illnesses we suffer from are in fact cries for help made by our bodies due to dehydration, and can be treated simply by drinking enough water, because water is responsible for balancing and regulating all bodily functions. Eventually, by pursuing the food of wellness, we can make every mouthful in every meal a moment of conscious awareness that represents an act of worship to God, and we can experience the power of living with a strong conscience which makes every mouthful we take an aliment for our spirits and a nourishment for our bodies. HAIRSTYLIST GEORGES EL MENDELEK’S KEY TIPS FOR HEALTHY AND RADIANT HAIR: Home hair care is more important than salon care. — Georges El Mendelek
What’s your favorite TRESemmé product?
I love TRESemmé Heat Defense Spray as it protects hair from damage caused by heat styling and UV rays.
How can we continue caring for our hair after treatments like Keratin?
Consider washing your hair less often (no more than three times weekly), and switch to sulfate-free products. I recommend TRESemmé Botanix Nourish & Replenish Shampoo and Conditioner. For dark hair dyed blonde, TRESemmé Platinum Strength Shampoo helps revive hair with only eight (continuous) washes.
Accentuate your natural beauty with TRESemmé. Thousands of ladies in Saudi joined the TRESmakeover contest, which took place in Dubai in October, via their live footage on social media. Sponsored by TRESemmé and Namshi, the event featured hairstylist Georges El Mendelek, make-up artist
Sarah Wada'ani and fashion stylist Alanoud Badr. As the Dream Team gave models a hair, make-up and fashion makeover that can also be easily applied at home, the viewers had the chance to ask them for tips. In the end, 2 winners were prized with TRESemmé products.

The softer your hair, the more likely it is to grease, so go for a softer range like TRESemmé 24-Hour Body Volume Shampoo. For stronger hair, heavy-duty products like TRESemmé Salon Silk with Moroccan Argan Oil tames flyaways and leaves a frizzfree, smooth finish. TRESemmé is sold in all mega and hypermarkets and pharmacies across the Kingdom.

What should we look out for when buying hair care products?
FASHION STYLIST ALANOUD BADR ANSWERED THE WINNING QUESTIONS. As a woman who wears the hijab, what can I do with my clothes to look slimmer?
What are the fundamental pieces for winter?
Play with color. Whatever you’re wearing, if its colors are dark on the side and light on the front, it gives a camouflage effect that makes you look slimmer. You can also wear a long blazer topped with a belt on the upper waist. If you’re wearing pants, choose ones that are loose with a straight cut.
Checkered patterns are amazing. Also, training pants with a thin line on the side are a favorite. Another preference are velvet pants and pants with sequins, as they can be worn from day to night, and also embellishment on jeans, like pearls and crystals.
Don’t be afraid of trends and colors. All body types can wear whatever they want. — Alanoud Badr
• Acne can be a big obstacle to confidence. Instead of hiding it with make-up, treat it with the help of a professional.
WITH HER TIPS, MAKE-UP ARTIST SARAH WADA'ANI, CHALLENGED BELIEFS ON MAKE-UP TRENDS.
• It’s vital to keep skin moisturized, especially under the eyes. Women who care for their skin go for the “no makeup” look, as they don’t feel the urge to hide flaws.
There are so many things that make us prettier but they don’t make us “us.” I can do a nose job and look prettier but it won’t be me. — Sarah Wada’ani
• General rules about make-up need not be applied. Rather, it’s more important to find personal rules that suit and express a woman’s personality and traits. For example, eyebrows should be left in their natural look, whether they’re thick or thin, long or short, even if peers don’t like it. ART VS COMMODITY
Abdulrahman Gazzaz on the difference between the two By Nadia Sakkal
Last month, Athr Gallery showcased the latest work of Saudi artist Abdulrahman Gazzaz, who is also the co-founder of Bricklab, an architecture and design company. The exhibition – 1101: A Social Experiment – featured different items that we ordinarily encounter in our daily lives, and asks the questions: What is the difference between decorative art, and “everyday” objects (that we use on a regular basis)? Is there a difference at all? Gazzaz started working on this project in January this year. Using cement, he cloned objects we all have at home, 74 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017
like coasters, chairs, and even vegetables and medical pills. In total, he made 1,101 pieces, which he separated into two spaces at the exhibition – on the left side of the gallery space, he laid the decorative art and on the right side, he placed the everyday items. The exhibition, which ran for the month of September, had Gazzaz engaging the visitors and attendees in conversation, listening to their opinions and observing what factors they use to evaluate the possible fine line between art and commodity. Vinyl Mode’s Solitude A new album in collaboration with Sarah Taibah By Nadia Sakkal
Jeddah-based electronic music band Vinyl Mode is releasing their new album, Solitude. A collaboration with young artist and singer Sarah Taibah, it tells the story of a woman who isolates herself from the noise of the world to reflect on her circumstances. Alone in a big city, the heroine subconsciously reminisces over the past and ruminates on the hopelessness of the present. 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017
We talked to Vinyl Mode’s DJs and music producers Moe Nassar and Harris Mavromatis, and Taibah, to learn more about the album.
What were the album’s beginnings?
Sarah Taibah: The songs were originally poems I wrote as part of my healing process by writing out a hurricane of emotions and feelings; I didn’t intend to share them,
much less include them in a music album! I was sharing my poetry with a friend who suggested I take my words to another level, and she arranged a meeting with Vinyl Mode. In 2 hours, we had a first draft for a song based on my first poem, Rubbama, which I read on a voice note and sent over to them. Less than a week later, we had the track, and I couldn’t believe it was me!

instruments in sound production – I’d like to give a shout out to the talented bass guitarist Ataa Alahadab who did a great job with the songs Contradiction and Another Lifetime.
What do you hope to achieve with this album?
Harris Mavromatis: If people understand what we’re trying to communicate, that’s the biggest achievement. I want our music to mean something to our listeners. I hope it talks to them; people usually communicate feelings, emotions and thoughts through different platforms, and music is our platform.
What future projects are you preparing?
Where did you record the album?
Harris Mavromatis: We have a studio at home, which contains all the necessary equipment. That’s where we do most of our work. Since this is this first time we record vocals, we didn’t have the equipment so we collaborated with Libra Studios in Jeddah.
What makes this album different than your previous ones?
Moe Nassar: It’s always good to come up with your signature sound. We had poems written in Arabic but didn’t want to use Arabic instruments as European DJs were already 78 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017
doing that. We reversed it, using Arabic words that were read out as in a monologue instead of sung. This album speaks of the hidden talent we have here in Saudi. Many “bedroom DJs” are producing great music at home but don’t know where to go with it. This album says: if we can be great producers, so can you. And if you’re reading this, please reach out to us.
What do you personally love about this album? Moe Nassar: Everything in this album is organic and it’s the result of different artistics minds coming together, like a puzzle. We used real
Moe Nassar: We have 2 more releases before the end of the year. They’re completely different from Solitude – higher pitched and faster. We’re also collaborating with Galaxy Juice, a very talented Kuwaiti band, as well as with Saudi musician Nadia Dandachi, to remix one of her original tracks. LA BELLE VIE Cheese and that provincial life By Noura Al Joaib
France instantly conjures images of high fashion, romance, Parisian lights, baked goods, art, and la belle vie – the good life, the overarching theme the French have always aspired towards. Last month, I was taken on a journey by experts of the cream industry Cream of Europe, to explore firsthand that good life. My trip began in Lyon. Lyon is considered by many to be the gastronomy capital of the world, having produced chefs that revolutionized not just French cooking, but the whole experience of enjoying a meal. At first glance, Lyon is a typical city surrounded by rolling green hills dotted with small 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017

villages and farmhouses. In fact, Lyon is the center of a beautiful and interconnected ecosystem of towns, farms, and, most importantly, people whose varied passions come together in a perfect symphony of life.
Cheese Cave at Fromagerie Janin
is complex to make – the aging process alone requires dedication and attention and can last up to 36 months.
A dining experience at the L’Auberge Ancienne (The Old Inn), a three-star Michelin restaurant situated in the tiny town of Vonnas, an hour south of Lyon, means an authentic family meal – red-and-white cloth cover the tables, preserved art line the walls, and classic French dishes are served.
We visit many family-run cheese businesses on this trip, one of them in the AuvergneRhône-Alpes – the Fromagerie Janin in Champagnole. Here, Comté is worked on by an affineur – a person who ages cheese – who, instead of just storing cheese, ripens it to bring it to its peak texture, flavor, and aroma. The Janins age their cheese in an underground cave beneath their shop.
Of course, no French table is complete without a plateau à fromage – the French and their cheese are inseparable. Take Comté, a cheese that
Deep in the Jura Mountains, near the Swiss border, is Fort des Rousses, home to JureFlore owned by legendary affineur Monsieur Jean-Charles Arnaud. DESTINATIONKSA.COM 83
“You have to use all your senses to examine the readiness of the cheese. Only after inspection from 5 cheese masters do we determine whether the cheese has aged to perfection.” Now, Comté, like all cheese, is made from milk. Both Monsieur Arnaud and Mathieu Janin stressed the importance of the milk used and the role it plays in the taste of the cheese. Ferme du Beau Pré in Champagnole is where the Janins get their milk. This organic farm, situated on 100 hectares of land and home to 45 cows is run by Dominique Faivre. This milk is collected exclusively by the local Comté makers. The cows’ diet and daily nutrients are taken care of religiously. “It all comes out in the cheese. It all starts with the pastures, the cereals the cows consume,” says Faivre.
Jean-Charles Arnaud
A former military fort built under Emperor Napoleon’s reign, today it hosts 140,000 wheels of Comté cheese, kept in variations of caves. JureFlore is known for its Morbier and Mont d’Or, but its crown jewel is none other than Comté.
Mathieu Janin 84 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017
Cheese aging is a specialty all on its own, and Monsieur Arnaud is the affinage king. Each cave does something different, with variances in humidity and temperature. “It’s alive, this cheese. It’s a living organism and responds to the environment it is kept in,” Monsieur Arnaud explains.
A trip to charming Annecy, specifically a visit to Fromagerie Gay, introduced us to owner and cheesemonger Pierre Gay, who specializes in selling cheese, butter, and other dairy products. He, too, ages his cheese in a small underground cave with a glass ceiling for people to peek through. What’s spectacular about Pierre is his unbridled love for cheese. “You have to love what you do. What’s the point of doing anything if it isn’t for love?” It’s one thing to have such love and passion passed down across generations, and to see a heritage respected and carried on. It’s quite another to see someone stepping up and into the world of cheese,

On National Day weekend, students and staff of Jeddah College of Advertising (JCA) turned the patriotic occasion into an exploration of Saudi Arabia’s major regions with their travel campaign Our Country Calls On Us. Salwa Bankhar, Head of Industry Relations, explained, “Traveling helps in selfdevelopment, and we as a society tend to lean towards exploring other countries. The youth play a big part in the country’s development, and in order to develop it they need to grasp its beauty.” 86 DESTINATION JEDDAH NOVEMBER 2017

Through this, the university expresses its loyalty and belonging to Saudi Arabia and its leadership. We hope this campaign becomes the catalyst of many creative campaigns to celebrate the wonderful Kingdom.” Our Country Calls On Us was able to deeply influence the youth’s sense of patriotism and their pride in their nation.
