THOUGHTS TO

DE N O P A Balanced Wellbeing

When we discuss wellbeing, we mostly only associate it with our physical health. In truth, our wellbeing includes our mental, emotional and spiritual health. How do we balance them all in a world that seems to perceive “busy” and “hectic” as a consensus way of life? We create a balance in our life by the choices we make every day. Priorities must be made and listed down. Set goals, prepare and manage time so we don’t get caught up in deadlines and in moments wishing for

R

an additional hour to the 24 we already have. All these pieces of advice seem too much it’s stressing you out? Again, believe that finding a balance in your life is doable. There is no shortage of a quote, a motto, or a slogan out there to inspire you to live a life of your own design. Life balance is a personal thing. Do whatever works for you, not for someone else. Thrive in your overall wellbeing. Look better, feel greater and live longer! (See the last sentence? That’s a slogan already! Go for it!)

Healthy Choices When Dining Out Riyadhis are getting health conscious nowadays and that’s a good thing! With restaurants in the city ushering in better food choices, eating out and eating healthy at the same time are no longer complicated. Diet food is now delicious! You can find healthy choices everywhere; Al’s Sandwiches pushes for a healthier lifestyle with their vegetarian sandwiches, mini rolls, and tapas bars. Z Pizza in Riyadh Gallery’s food court is inspired by California and a healthy way of life so you bet that their pizza, made of 100 percent organic wheat flour and topped with organic ingredients is not only great-tasting but guilt-free as well. Making healthy choices when dining out has never been this easy and fun!

Thumbs Down to...

Rising Prices of Basic Commodities

We know that inflation in Saudi Arabia is serious when the hashtag “Let it (tomatoes) go to hell” is trending in Twitter. It’s not exactly the tomatoes they’re against. Saudis prompted the anti-tomato campaign on Twitter after the Kingdom saw a steep increase in the price of tomatoes in the recent months. It urges people to reduce the amount of tomatoes they use and consume to lessen the demand for tomatoes and force the price to go down too. For the record, tomatoes are not the only basic food items that suffered from price increase. Eggs too. Hashtag “Let eggs break in hell” anyone? DESTINATION RIYADH 9

“THE MOST GRATIFICATION ONE CAN GET IS THE CLIENT’S SMILE WHEN THE PROJECT IS COMPLETE.”-AL ANGARI The event was initiated by an introduction to Raffles, one of the sponsors of the event. The session was then moderated by Destination Riyadh’s own editor, Hana Jazzar, and presented the experiences of interior designer Jude Al Angari and graphic designer Khansa Abunaji.

Wafa Al Rushaid, CEO of Raffles Design Institute, spoke about the world-class design school that is open for enrollment. Classes began on Nov. 24 in the following fields: Interior Design, Fashion Marketing/ Design, Multimedia and Jewelry Design. Al Rushaid emphasized that students graduate not only with a design degree, but also as entrepreneurs ready to launch their business as the course of study includes management and business courses.

working with them for three years, Al Angari joined her family’s interior design business. However, she wanted to do more, and she started her own business called “Jude design.” She said that it was not easy to start her own business as her father did not support her decision at the time. Al Angari faced other difficulties including how to manage and run a company such as finances. Clients were also sometimes disappointed when they would first meet her because she is a woman. But once the project is completed they are always impressed. “The most gratification one can get is the client’s smile when the project is complete,” she said.

Moderator Hana Jazzar commences the session by suggesting that every Saudi woman should plan for her future, and choose her own career path. She then goes on to ask the speakers to share their stories so that the audience can learn from their experience as working women in Saudi Arabia. Al Angari explains that after graduating from college in Dubai she returned to Riyadh and decided to work with a BritishGerman company for experience. After

Al Angari advises that in order to succeed as an interior designer, there are five things one needs to seek: 1.A good education 2.To attend international events related to interior design 3.To visit international companies and see what technologies they are using (stay up to date with the technologies in this industry) 4. Renew and update the materials library every six months 5.Understand the clients’ personalities. Al Angari insists that “everything can be learnt, if you have a goal you will reach it.” In five years Ms. Al Angari hopes to keep learning from every project and she has ambitions to become an international firm.

The King’s Forest, RAWDAT KHURAIM By Layla

The weather in Riyadh is amazing this time of the year and makes for a perfect day trip to the desert. Rawdat Khuraim, also called the King's Forest, is an accessible and pleasant getaway from the hustle and bustle of the big city. It’s like a real green oasis suddenly appearing from the desert. And the best part? Even though it’s literally in the middle of nowhere, you don’t need an SUV to reach it! Rawdat (which means garden in Arabic) Khuraim is a beautiful and serene park about 100 kilometers north of Riyadh. It's called the King's Forest mainly because King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz has a private farm there where he usually goes for a spring retreat. Today, the area serves as a sanctuary for various wildlife such as gazelles. The local universities often conduct studies in this area due to the diversity of insects, flora and fauna that can be found there. The forestis divided into the area accessible to public and the wildlife park, which is prohibited to enter in order to preserve nature and wildlife. The area open to public is less green and lush than the part that is off limits but nevertheless it is a wonderful change of scenery from the sand and cement. The Al-Dahna desert sand dunes can be seen from the park and a number of valleys are nearby such as Wadi Khuwaish and Watheelan, which are accessible and make for an interesting visit. 20 DESTINATION RIYADH

Rawdhat Khuraim’s public park area is huge and grows a variety of trees, bushes, flowers and other vegetation year round. In the springtime, when the Rawdat is in full bloom, flowers such as lavender and three -leaf clovers fill the air with their sweet scent. There's an estimated 132 species of wild plants and 42 species of animals present in Rawdat Khuraim, some of which have been released into the wildlife sanctuary. The public park has a pole fence around the perimeter to prevent motor vehicles from entering. The best parts are accessible by foot only. The area beyond the pole fence is for the most part clean and free of trash, which is unfortunately a rarity for picnic places in Saudi. It's a lovely place to go walking, bird watching or just for a picnic and women can take their abayas off if they so wish. There are large green grass fields perfect for football and other outdoor games. On a weekday if you’re lucky, you can have the entire Rawdat to yourself!

Overnight camping is not allowed inside the fenced area but on the outside of the perimter it's fine to pitch a tent and spend the night. Visitors should leave the park by 10 p.m. when the rangers begin their rounds. If you want to make a campfire it's strictly forbidden to use the forest trees as firewood. On the way there’s roadside vendors selling firewood, charcoal and small fire pits. You will also find kites, toys, blankets, pillows, snacks, water and basically everything you would need to have a nice picnic. There's even a tent renting service and on weekends a few Bedouin women come to sell traditional handicrafts and goat milk products. Directions: From Riyadh take the Dammam highway (route 40E) toward Rumah. After about 40 kilometers turn left to Rumah. Then drive another 55 kilometers and you will see signs for Rawdhat Khuraim on the right. Follow the signs and the gardens are easy to spot from the highway ahead of you. Drive towards the garden on the tarmac road and turn right or left off that road to enter the area. If you continue straight on this road, it leads to the gates of the King's farm and the preservation area, which are closed and protected with public barbed wire. To the left

of the road you can see Dahna sand dunes. Drive closer to the pole fence, park the car and then continue on foot.

Lots of locals don't even bother to walk beyond the fences so it might seem crowded around the fences. Don't be discouraged by the crowd, just walk a few minutes away from the fence and you will find there’s nobody else around. For the quietest places drive off to the right from the road, around to the back of the park, following the fence until you see a nice spot. The forest is so huge you can drive for half an hour along the fence and still not see an end to the park. Alternatively you can go left from the road next to the red sand dunes but this place usually is more crowded because it's easier to reach. You can drive here with a passenger car, but if you wish to venture farther you will need a 4x4. Remember to wear good footgear such as sneakers or hiking shoes that will protect your feet from the thorny bushes! DESTINATION RIYADH 21

Explore KSA

Like most road trips in Saudi Arabia, ours began with advice on how to apply dishwashing soap to the front of the rental car. Khaki-colored hoods are a quintessentially telltale sign of a Saudi car on a long drive, much like the presence of Vimto in grocery stores during Ramadan. Fairy is apparently the preferred brand but paint defender sprays purchased from gas stations work just as well. The end goal is to ensure the front portion of the vehicle is protected from effectively being sandblasted as you clock around 170 kilometers per hour (105 miles per hour) on your drive. We had about 700 kilometers of driving ahead of us to arrive at our first destination on our weeklong road trip, the Wahba crater, the largest of its kind in the Middle East; two bottles of the protective spray were purchased.

While driving, the sand surrounding the highway becomes ubiquitous and invisible. Yet between looking out for traffic police cars lurking under camel overpasses and the speed camera and radars the surprising diversity of Saudi Arabia’s landscape materializes. Rock massifs, volcanic cones, almost extraterrestrial rock formations, intertwined with date palm farms with brown and yellow parched leaves, and free-roaming camel herds made up the drive to the crater. The landscape ranged widely on the drive, and as we got closer to the crater the scenery became increasingly rocky and surreal. You can see a variety of soil colors and textures ranging from extreme red to almost white, but the rock formations were the most startling aspect. Not enough can be said about the eerie rock formations that emerge seemingly out of nowhere in desolate landscapes.

WABHA CRATER By Wided Al Khadraoui

Comparisons to the topography of Mars were made repeatedly, which helped me decide on my subsequent career as a location scout for sci-fi movies, if Saudi Arabia ever does decide to open up to Hollywood film crews. About six hours later we exited off the main Riyadh-Makkah highway and drove through several very small communities and lava fields until the end of the newly paved road, where four metal poles stop cars from driving any farther. The road ends exactly at the crater’s rim. The crater is spectacularly massive. It is roughly two kilometers wide, situated on the edge of the Harrat Kishb lava field. The edge drops by around 250 meters to the base, making for an extreme cliff edge. According to Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Earthquakes and Volcanoes, the crater is a result of a “phreatic explosion caused by the near-instantaneous generation of steam at the contact between rising magma and ground water.”

In layman terms it means very hot lava came into contact with water, causing a massive instant eruption, resulting in this huge hole in the middle of what is now a desert. The crater’s floor is a saltpan; the center almost entirely covered by a thin white sheet, although apparently in the winter it turns into a small lake. We arrived right before sunset. The intense color disparity between the backdrop of the black lava fields, white salt at the bottom of the crater, and a blue sky tinged with the gold of the setting sun made for an impressive end to the drive. Photos sent to a Saudi friend promoted an incredulous response: “Are you guys even in Saudi?” It’s impressively enormous in real life, and the photographs don’t do justice to the loneliness of the crater’s isolation. The photographs also fail to capture the echo of the wind blowing over the lava field and that, quite possibly, was the best part.

THE CRATER IS SPECTACULARLY MASSIVE. IT IS ROUGHLY 2KM WIDE, SITUATED ON THE EDGE OF THE .HARRAT KISHB LAVA FIELD

* The Wabha Crater is under the protection of the National Commission for Wildlife Conservation and Development (NCWCD) which strives to promote ecotourism. Camping is permitted but there are no amenities provided for visitors, and those who decide to camp are asked to also remove any trash they accumulate to preserve the area. DESTINATION RIYADH 23

FEEL GOOD FIRST, LOOK GOOD LATER

There are times when people get confused and think that a velvet “I’m a princess” tracksuit is proper sportswear – it’s not. Your chic-ness shouldn’t be messing with your workout. As much as possible, choose materials that would keep you dry and allows for the mobility your activity requires.

LEAVE THESE IN YOUR CLOSET: All Cotton Clothes – absorbs sweat, takes time to dry, which can cause chills, skin irritation and heaviness of fabrics. Invest instead in Dri-fit fabrics.

Baggy Clothing – (Unless your classes state otherwise), if it doesn’t fit, leave it because not only is it unflattering, it can be a hazard if you’re using the gym equipment and machines.

Accessories – Minus a pedometer or your workout gadget, leave your jewelry safe at home or in your locker. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings can easily get tangled into something.

Worn Out Shoes and Clothes – How do you know if it’s time to retire your favorite kicks and shirt? If you run at least twice a week, expect to change it at least once a year. Exercise clothes get more beat up than the rest of your wardrobe, the sweat and constant wash can easily take its toll. Throw it away once it begins to form an odor of its own (eww!).

KNOW YOUR SHOES On the contrary to what most people think, you need certain shoes for all sorts of exercises including walking, jogging, sprinting, hiking, playing sports on hard ground, grass, or gravel - and the list goes on! Before your next workout session, make sure you’re wearing the right kind of sneakers. If you’re unclear regarding the differences, ask your trainer.

Ideal walking shoes must have extra cushioning in the heel since that’s what hits the ground first.

1. GROUP CLASSES:

For classes such as Zumba, kickboxing, kettle bells or spinning, you’ll need good sneakers that have a multi-purpose outsole and low profile midsole. The wrong shoe can cause both short and longterm injuries.” – Kit Rich, fitness expert

RIYADH FASHION DAYS AW 2013

For those waiting for winter, it's here! And what better way to welcome it than don the creations showcased on the fourth edition of Riyadh Fashion Days. The four-day event kicked off on Nov. 11 at Maison Bo-M Galleries, Nujoud Mall in Riyadh. It revealed a bevy of stylish autumn/ winter 2013 collections created by talented designers from the Middle East. The event attracted a crowd of gorgeous models, stylish Saudi fashionistas and distinguished members of the press. On the first day, models take the catwalk wearing the beautiful abayas from Fiore by Jeddah designer

Omaymah Azzouz. The opening night was so successful it left the audience wanting for more. The second night didn't disappoint; it featured the modern and classic design of Nada Style (Riyadh), ready-to-wear pieces and eveningwear of Elle Maison (Bahrain) and elegant abayas of Nabrman (Dubai). Dresses were the highlight of the third day. Models paraded the party dresses by Jelbab Danah (Riyadh) and kaftans by Khloud Alajaji (Al Khobar). The last label for the night was Mounay, a brand from Lebanon that caters to a young generation with an eye for chic and high fashion. Known for their gorgeous separates, Mounay proved that peplums and ruffles are still trending. The much-anticipated fourth and last day of RFD 2013 showcased a mix of tradition and modernity. Bishtyabayas found inspiration in the colorful designs of Arabia. The patchworks and fabrics used lent a vintage

yet fun feel to the simple black abayas. A surprise addition to this year's RFD is American clothing and accessories retailer Banana Republic. The once allsafari themed clothing brand revamped itself to cater to urban professionals. And the Banana Republic clothes modeled for the night truly showed class and elegance. The last collection for the night amplified the event. NOA Couture's collection titled "Forever Young" was crazy, theatrical and unlike any other. It was wave after wave of unique pieces that entertain and enchant. Capes filled with graffiti, studded accessories, clear bags with baby dolls and voluminous dresses made the audience gasp in awe and appreciation. The edgy masks, furry turbans, and oriental umbrellas added dramatic flairs to each eccentric ensemble. Once again, the Riyadh Fashion Days autumn/ winter 2013 successfully celebrates the brilliance and creativity of the region's fashion designers putting them to a brighter spotlight. The fashion shows are over but the exhibition of over 25 brands featured in RFD AW13 is still ongoing and will last until Jan. 31. DESTINATION RIYADH 35

Chef

MAHA Cooking Up Creativity With Comfort

At a time when little girls her age would be playing with dolls, Chef Maha’s favorite toys were ladles and pans. Today, she has blossomed to become one of the most talented Saudi chefs we’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Since her debut as the head chef of Maison Bo-M Café, Maha has been sending a savory buzz among Riyadh’s culinary enthusiasts and certified foodies. On one drizzling afternoon, I finally caught up with the busy chef for an intimate conversation on the finer points of her healthy, hearty, (and highly addictive) food… What or who inspired you to become a chef? My father is probably the 38 DESTINATION RIYADH

biggest foodie I know and he was an amazing cook. He introduced me to the oven at a very young age. Our father-daughter bonding consisted of experimenting in the kitchen and going to restaurants where he would ask for an audience with the chef just to tell him down to the finest details what he wanted. That kind of influence stuck with me and I love seeing people’s faces bright up when they take a bite of my food. So, how did you turn the inspiration into a profession? I’m self-taught when it comes to cooking but I knew I needed to improve my techniques further

in order to be a chef. And so, I went to Miami where I worked in different kitchens and for some of amazing chefs who became my mentors. I also took courses. When I got back, I got introduced through a common friend to Maison Bo-M. When I saw the café, it was a match made in heaven. The eclectic and cozy atmosphere of the place matched my style as a chef. Speaking of style, how would you describe yours? What’s your culinary philosophy? My style is a mix of the food I grew up with, my formal training, I also do a lot of infusions in my cooking. I love Italian and French

prepare food is through simple cooking; too much process can reduce the quality of your ingredients and the integrity of its flavors.

''IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO WORK WITH THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS'' -Chef Maha cuisine with a Mediterranean twist or a local touch to it You should try my French Kabsa, it should explain things better. I also believe in serving hearty but healthy dishes. I live by the idea that healthy food shouldn’t taste bad and I try to make people eat well without them even realizing it. I’ve often heard people comment on that, they’ve often described the food as comforting and savory but also light; what’s your secret? Fresh produce! It’s very important to work with the freshest ingredients and I try to find a way to get them even if it’s a bit difficult in Riyadh. I have come to understand also that the best way to

You put a lot of emphasis on ingredients; can you tell us more about the items you like working with? What will we be seeing when we look into your kitchen pantry? I’ll tell you first what you won’t see – cans. I don’t like canned anything. You also won’t find ketchup or mayo; I don’t serve anything with them. I try to use organic produce as much as I can and I make everything I serve from scratch. So you will find a lot of raw ingredients; the pastry is baked fresh no matter how many I have to make. The jams are also prepared from scratch so you will see different fresh fruits too. I am all for healthy eating but I do draw the line on one thing – Nutella, it’s a staple in my kitchen. How would you describe the taste buds of Riyadhis? People in Saudi Arabia, not just Riyadh, love good food. They like things to be tasty and flavorful. But sometimes, some taste buds can be a little conservative and wanting to

stay with the familiar. What do you do then that appeals to their local palette? I try to be traditional but also imaginative. My goal is to challenge people outside of their comfort zone when it comes to food, a lot of eaters don’t like vegetables for example so I find ways to make veggies delicious, sometimes you won’t even know it’s veggie until I tell you that it is. What’s next for Chef Maha? I like reinventing my dishes and my kitchen is always evolving. Being in Maison Bo-M café, I have the freedom to really focus on my craft. It’s more new recipes, more fusions, like a few days ago I created the Chai Latte Green Tea Tiramisu. You know how when you cannot find what you want, make it? I can’t find good bread in Riyadh so I am thinking of adding a bakery here for oven fresh bread. On a final note, what feelings or thoughts would you like to invoke through your food? A cozy, warm, comforting feeling like home cooking on a relaxed and happy weekend.

The Health Buff’s Guide to Dining Out In Riyadh

Let’s start off with a tip: If you’re trying to stay on the healthy wagon, your best bet in sticking to your diet plan is to prepare your meals at home and avoid dining out altogether. However, realistically as most fitness trainers say, you would and should indulge sometimes. Being a burger loving, comfort food embracing city, it’s hard to find restaurants that would serve you a meal under 500 calories… If you don’t have this issue that is. DIET CENTER Multiple Branch Takhassussi Serves packed meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, which you can subscribe to pick up or have delivered on a monthly basis. There are some shops with items made for to-go. The Diet Center itself can design which meals you would have per day in advance, all you have to do is pick them up. 40 DESTINATION RIYADH

GOURMET BURGER KITCHEN End of Tahliya St. The term healthy burger may sound counterintuitive but we guarantee it can work. GBK doesn’t breakdown calories or count it up for you at that but they do give you a no carb option. You can choose to have your burger bun-less and wrapped with lettuce instead with a side dish of coleslaw instead of fries. Is it a worthy alternative? Some do say so.

FROM NATURE Sahara Mall Good tasting diet food is hard to come by at the food court, that’s where From Nature comes in. They have amazing menus that clearly state and break down the calories per serving of each item. The food itself if great, subs and sandwiches that are quite filling and great for a healthy quick lunch fix.

TIPS FOR HEALTH CONSCIOUS DINERS • Avoid fried food and say no to that extra cheese. • Fish, particularly salmon or tuna, has good fat and usually carries the least calories on a regular menu.

DIET WATCHERS Olaya St. Although applying a similar concept to the other diet stores; Diet Watchers has an edge due to the fact that their food is quite delicious, you wouldn’t know it was diet food at all. Like most concept restaurants/shops like this, they can preplan your meals and you can avail of their delivery service for a monthly or daily rate.

• Don’t skip the soup and salad so as to control your mains intake.

APPLEBEE’S Tahliya St. Craving for a good slab of steak while staying within your daily calorie limit? Then you’ll love “Under 550” offerings on Applebee’s menu. We love the roasted sirloin steak paired with grilled potatoes and Portobello mushrooms stuffed with creamy spinach. It’s guiltless mmm-mm-m.

• Doggie bags are your friends especially when you visit restaurants that have large portions. No need to finish your meal in one sitting. • Don’t hesitate to ask the waiter or kitchen on whether they have healthy options.

AL’S SANDWICH CAFE Kingdom Mall Food Court Aside from indicating the calories per serving they also include the complete nutritional information per recipe; fat, sodium, carbs, etc. The sandwiches are tasty, although they may come across as a tad bit pricey considering their simplicity. They also have a fresh organic salad bar, which may appeal to the green lovin' purists of Riyadh.

I often see members performing exercise with poor form and with bad technique. This is dangerous and can cause injury. When I see this I always try to correct them and show them the right technique. This is how you gain most benefit from working out.

Aside from the physical benefits, I really love seeing my members change their bodies and their lives. I am helping them change, and that gives me a positive feeling. I truly believe that what I teach are the best programs for sustainable and long lasting change.

What advice do you have for nutrition and diet? It is important to have a balanced and nutritious diet if you want to keep your body healthy and give it the energy it needs to workout regularly, build muscle and recover. Most bodybuilders need 50 percent to 60 percent of their total calories from carbohydrates to lift at full strength and keep energy reserves within muscles. More healthful, slower-burning carbs such as whole grains, peas, corn and salads. You need 1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight per day to keep growing. You

need to keep fat to a minimum. Finally, it is very important to keep your body hydrated. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day, and avoid sugary drinks. Do you have any motivational and inspirational advice? I often get asked ‘how can I be like you’ and I always answer: If you’re committed, work hard, eat well, challenge your body then there is no reason you should want to be like me, because you can be even better than me! To be honest, nothing gives me more satisfaction than when I see my members getting stronger, fitter and better! If you want to take the chance to make a change then just come find me in Fitness First gym. DESTINATION RIYADH 45

CYNTHIA MELIADO Specialty: Pilates Email: Xhale.studio.ksa@gmail.com Rates: 60 SR for regular ladies class Session Type: Group classes only

How did you get started in Pilates? I was forced somehow into starting Pilates. I was struggling for almost a year with serious lower back problems due to an injury during my Yoga practice. The doctor I saw sent me off on a strong Pilates diet: five times per week for a whole year. "You gotta build up your core strength and adjust your postural alignment. Otherwise you'll be back to see me. I never went back to see him. I only dropped him a mail to thank him for the great tip he gave me. What kind of Pilates do you teach? I am a certified aerial Pilate’s instructor and a Yoga teacher. When I offer a class, it's not coming really from one school in particular or one discipline. I get to know my students, what they need, and then put all my background together to offer them the best I can. I am quite unorthodox as an instructor I guess. What is your fitness/wellness regimen? During weekdays, I alternate Pilates and Yoga. I have a daily practice of an hour or more whenever it's possible. Whenever life gets busy, I try to be on the mat for at least 15 minutes; I call it my maintenance practice. It becomes like daily hygiene, like washing your face somehow. On Fridays I try to swim for an hour and then stretch for another while listening to some opera. It is good for the soul. Diet wise, I am not much of a good example, I live on fruits, bread and chocolate (not sure if you want post that lol) How often would you recommend someone to do Pilates to get real results? I would say three to five times per week, ideally. But I know that life doesn't allow

that for most of us. I highly encourage students then to stretch alone for at least 15 minutes during the day, or to have a little walk. Just don't go straight away from the office chair to the couch in front of the TV. What would be your top five tips for getting the most out of your Pilates workout? 1- Find the time for it. 2- Find the will to practice consistently. 3- Don't be frustrated when you get tired or can't do an exercise. Be rather determined and patient. 4- Commit to the practice, detach from the result (Pilates is there to make you feel good and not to prove yourself or obsess about the calories you've burned). 5- We build up bad habits for years and expect them to disappear after few classes. Won't happen. Give Pilates the time it deserves and it'll pay you back, generously. "So practice and the rest will come" DESTINATION RIYADH 47

MMA dates to the Olympics of ancient Greece, where it all began in the form of hand-to-hand fights referred to as a sport called pankration, derived from the Greek words pan and kratos, meaning “all powers.” Starting as a simple competition with the only two rules being no biting and no eye gouging, pankration increased in popularity and shortly spread to India then Brazil and eventually branched out further worldwide. As the sport spread worldwide, citizens of each country began to build on it according to their own preferences and traditions, creating new styles of martial arts and simultaneously learning different types from one another. For example, Brazilian jiu-jitsu came about when an expert in judo practiced and spread his teachings in Brazil. RIYADH FREESTYLERS

Whoever underestimates the power of boredom in the city has yet to meet the Riyadh Football Freestylers. What started out as a young man’s desire to take his love for the game to a whole new challenging level a few years ago has now quickly evolved into an urban movement. Combining killer foot skills, crazy ball stunts with a drive to make being fit fun and engaging; this crew is bound to grab your attention regardless of where they perform. And the best part? They don’t just entertain, they’re here to inspire.

It’s actually an obsession for us; we love what we’re doing and when we get to pull off a new stunt, it’s a different kind of high for us, it’s just gratifying. – Taufiq

DESTINATION RIYADH 51

In 2007, Taufiq Bamatraf, a former player for Al Hilal football club was playing around with his football. “Just your usual passing time by kicking, tossing and flipping it around my room,” he describes, “but then I realized, I could do something with this; I’ve watched others outside the Kingdom do tricks of their own, so why not me?” Like a lot of young men in Riyadh, Taufiq turned to the Internet. He started watching YouTube videos and howto’s, then began mixing it a bit with his own style. The curiosity eventually turned into a passion and when he found that there was no group of this sort in the city, it only sparked the desire in him further to create the football freestyle movement. Taufiq is an outspoken ADHD advocate and was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. His condition made it slightly difficult to focus on his training. He tells us how 52 DESTINATION RIYADH

it was probably his desire and love for the movement that helped him stay on track and to keep on going, giving him a sense of routine and the will power to concentrate. After what he describes as countless hours of training, he was able to develop skills and showcase what he can do among his friends. This easily allowed him to recruit like-minded spirits and with three of his friends, formed the Riyadh Football Freestylers (RFFS). “We often get asked why use Riyadh as our name? Why not something more international?" The reason for that is we want to

represent this city, we want people to know when they watch us that this city has a lot to offer and we’re the kick-starters to the Arab freestyle football.” RFFS didn’t just head out on the streets and start entertaining crowds.

According to the group it takes a lot of practice to master each trick and enhance their footwork. Their group trains for seven to 12 hours per session and it has caused them some bumps and bruises along the way. Taufiq adds, “It’s actually an obsession for us; we love what we’re doing and when we get to pull off a new stunt, it’s a different kind of high for us, it’s just gratifying.” Over the years, the RFFS has gained the respect of football fans and media outlets, in addition to potential collaborations with interested companies. However, what struck me during our conversation is how RFFS is most dedicated to using their talent in order to support a lot of organizations in the city and reach out to children.

JOGGING SPOTS IN RIYADH

Whether you’re looking to add running to your exercise routine or simply take a leisurely stroll outside, Riyadh has running trails and paved paths that are sure to get your sneaker-clad toes tingling for a run or walk. Below is a list of spots you could go to clock in some steps and get a whiff of fresh air in the process. 54 DESTINATION RIYADH

1. KING FAHD MEDICAL CITY

It’s one of the most accessible paved running routes since it’s right in the middle of the city. The path is 3.5 kilometers and well lit, making it a convenient place to head off to for after work runners. There are signs that let you know how far you’ve reached as well as benches that make for rest stops if you need a little break. The path is hard and doesn’t have any elevated areas. Do expect to see a lot of people eating shawarmas and sipping on cocktails, walking leisurely beside you, hence running at top speed may not be advisable.

2. KING ABDULLAH ROAD WALK PATH

A walk path you’d get to enjoy if you would also like a change of scenery. The track itself is well maintained with lots of trees on the side, which makes for a pleasant walk anytime of the day or evening. The pathway is wide enough to let you run unobstructed by other runners or the people drinking tea on the sidewalk benches. A portion of the track runs parallel to the main road so the pollution can be annoying at times.

3. DIPLOMATIC QUARTER

The jogging path around the DQ is ideal for both leisure walking and advanced runners. There’s a clearly defined trail that surrounds the park areas and the added elevation is sure to enjoyed by those wanting to add a challenge to their routine. This is one of the most ideal paths accessible to the public for women who wish to exercise without their abaya. Just be sure to still do your runs in a proper and modest sports attire.

4. OFF BEATEN TRACKS

Some joggers who are looking for a little adventure and some fresh air (disclaimer: dust does come with that at times) can head off to the outskirts of Riyadh and add in some hiking with the running. Your best bet for a safe trip and finding the right places would be to get in touch with the Riyadh Hashers, a group that sets up these outdoor activities at certain desert locations.

DON’T WANT TO RUN ALONE?

You can try to get in touch with the Riyadh Road Runners club, it’s open to different nationalities and doesn’t require you to meet a certain fitness level. The RRR also arranges marathons and running days in compounds and different areas in the city. TOP ENERGY FOODS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY

Some swear by natural foods, others are more adventurous and try out genetically modified foods that promise to possess super nutrients required in the right amounts. The relationship we share with foods is unique. Love them or hate them, we sure cannot live without them!

Although some latest scientific research has thrown immense light on the marvelous benefits that different types of foods provide to our body, did you know that these properties were discovered hundreds of years ago by the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions? Even with enormous advancement in technology, we are battling a larger number of diseases than what our grandparents had to deal with. So, where exactly are we going wrong? Let us turn back the pages in history to 1,400 years ago to discover the amazing health secrets Prophet Muhammad (S) and his civilization were applying in their lives through the types of foods they had incorporated in their daily diet. Listed below are five super foods you will find may affect your productivity levels:

The Qur'an testifies to the healing nature of honey, when Allah says: “And your Lord revealed to the bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in what they build: Then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it a beverage of many colors, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect.” (Surah An-Nahl, Verses 68-69) Did you know that honey could be used for treating stress, anemia, burns, insomnia, osteoporosis and abdominal pain? It can also kick off fatigue, digestion related problems; relieve symptoms of sore throat and nasal congestion. So instead of pumping your body with artificial supplements to boost your immune system, utilize this supplement to cure your physical and psychological ailments.

58 DESTINATION RIYADH

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, cupping, and branding with fire. But I forbid my followers to use (cauterization) branding with fire.”(Sahih Bukhari)

If you were thinking milk was purely meant for children, think again! As a drink, it was the custom of our Prophet (S) to have a combination of dates and milk to get the best out of both. Apart from being rich in calcium, did you know that milk provides several vitamins and minerals in the right proportions, helping your stomach digest and utilize them to the maximum? They are extremely rich in proteins too. These build up your immune system, helping you fight off microorganisms.

These were an indispensable part of the Prophetic diet. Packed with high quality sugars like sucrose and fructose, dates act as instant energy boosters. They are easy to digest and have a plethora of

water-soluble vitamins along with crucial minerals like calcium and iron. Dates have been mentioned more than 20 times in the Qur'an under various situations, highlighting the immense importance these wonder foods possess. The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “If somebody takes pressed dates every morning, he will not be effected by poison or magic on that day till night.” (Sahih Bukhari 7:663)

Scientists vouch for it, nutritionists cannot get enough of it and it holds an enviable place in the family of cooking oils. Allah also mentions it in the Qur'an. (See Chapter 24, Verse 35) Olive oil is power-packed with antioxidants that can prevent cancer and premature aging. It is extremely rich in unsaturated fats, preventing the possibility of developing cardiovascular diseases and cholesterol related problems. One of the Companions, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stated: “Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally), since there is cure for 70 diseases in it, one of them is leprosy.” (Abu Naim) I hope to have inspired you to revive your intake of some of these super energy foods with multiple benefits. It’s evident that the Islamic civilization and history offer practical ways forward in consumption of food. What scientific discoveries are revealing today was understood and exploited hundreds of years ago! With the verse of Allah, which means: “Oh mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and good on the earth,” (Chapter 2, Verse 168) it is not surprising to learn that the Prophet and Muslims have been using several foods for curing mild to severe forms of sickness. I hope the aforementioned foods will be a part of your daily diet and you’ll share tips below on other super energy foods you love!

After the hullaballoo of fast foods, people have gone back to traditional methods of including whole grains in their diet. Brown bread has become the latest fad with every diet conscious person swearing about the numerous health benefits. Whole grains are packed with nutrients, vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates and fiber. What does this mean for you? Well, by including whole grains, you are giving your body a perfect concoction of super beneficial nutrients. In other words, you are keeping obesity, nutritional deficiencies, diabetes, digestive problems and cancer at bay inshaAllah. Whenever a person of the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) fell sick then it was ordered that the barley gruel should be prepared for him. Then he used to state: “It removes the grief of the patient’s heart, removes its weakness as any of you removes the dirt from your face after washing it”. (Ibn Majah) Barley, oats, brown bread and whole wheat are some options you can consider. DESTINATION RIYADH 59

During our tour, we noticed how Sylt is dotted with small thatched roof houses, as if we were stepping into the tale of Hansel and Gretel. The island has its own dialect called Söl’ring, which is only spoken by four percent of the population. Sylt is a famous secondary residence and is known as “the island of the rich and beautiful.” Due to its sense of serenity, beauty, luxury and comfort, the island has always been attractive to Germany’s richest residents.

Food guides, such as the Michelin and the Gault Millau, one of the most influential French restaurant guides, have repeatedly given awards to several of the island’s restaurants. Whether visitors are fans of gourmet elegant restaurants or relaxed casual beach bistros, they will be impressed with their dining experiences on the island. Our first culinary experience was at La Grande Plage restaurant in Kampen. The restaurant is nice and hip, and is reached by taking a long walk along the beach. We were infatuated with the relaxed environment, the people in their beachwear and the surfers lazing about by the water. One of the many things Sylt is known for is its culinary scene. For dinner we went for a fancy meal at Sansibar, a restaurant known for attracting a number of German celebrities including Claudia Schiffer and Boris Becker. It’s a small cozy candle-lit restaurant that

overwhelms you with a feeling of warmth and comfort. The food, the steak with sides of salad and potatoes, to be specific, was exceptionally delicious. After memorable tours of Sylt and its attractions, we took a train to the wealthiest city in Germany, Hamburg, where we were ferried to the Hotel Atlantic Kempinski. At the hotel’s rooftop terrace and known as the “Phantom Room,” is one of Hamburg’s most sought after locations in terms of privacy and seclusion. The terrace provides guests with a breathtaking view of the city in addition to peace and quiet. The hotel is in the city center, making it easy to visit the city’s

historical monuments and shopping boutiques. With a peaceful mind and slightly heavier luggage, we flew back to Jeddah. Lufthansa Airlines, who provide travelers with the quickest and most convenient routes, organized our trip. On our trip, we flew to Frankfurt, and then took another flight from there to Sylt. On our way back, we took the train to Hamburg and from there, we came back home. Lufthansa is known for its convenience and flexibility in dealing with passengers. Healthy Living

It is said that if any one thing in this world has mystical properties, it’s water. We are not only made up of 50 to 60 percent water and living on a planet that is made up of 70 percent of the same simple combination of hydrogen and oxygen, we need our daily fix of pure drinking water (even more than we need our morning coffee!) to survive. But how much water do we really need and why do we need it?

Why drink water? • • • • • • • • •

It is the only weight loss drink you need! A glass of water before meals will help you feel full and control your portions. At the start of any diet or exercise regime, the initial rapid weight loss is due to loss of water. Staying hydrated keeps the fat-burning process smooth. It aids digestion. It helps get rid of toxins in your body. Water boosts your general metabolism; that is, it keeps the chemical reactions in your body running smoothly. Dehydration is a major cause of fatigue and maybe even your constant headache. Water lubricates the joints and reduces muscle soreness, especially if you’ve been exercising. Hydrated skin will glow! Water helps reduce acne and other skin problems while also leaving you with healthy nails. Drinking a good amount of water reduces the risk of a heart attack and colon cancer.

Many applications such as the Water Your Body app will allow you to calculate your required amount of water and remind you at regular intervals to drink up! Alternatively, you can print out a “water card” (or make one yourself if you’re crafty!) and regulate the amount of water you’re having daily. Also, always carry bottled water while you’re on the go so you never have an excuse! If you’re really daring and can part with your daily latte or red bull, some nutritionists recommend replacing one daily drink with a glass of water. Good luck and stay hydrated!

Metabolism? WHAT IS

People always talk about metabolism and how it affects whether they’re losing or gaining weight. So what exactly is metabolism? “Metabolism is the process of breaking down proteins, carbohydrates and fats to produce the energy your body needs to maintain itself.” In other words meaning, it’s the process in which your body converts the food and drink you consume into energy.

Things that slow down metabolism are…

SKIPPING BREAKFAST!

When they say, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day,” believe it! One of the worst things you can do if you’re trying to lose weight is skip breakfast; in fact, that’s the main contributing factor to a decrease in metabolism. When you don’t have breakfast within the hour after you wake up, your brain sends a message to the rest of your body telling it to hold on to and store fat. Having breakfast initiates the metabolic process (called thermogenesis) that turns food you eat into energy..

BARELY EATING: When you eat too little, your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolic rate slows down in an attempt to store the existing fuel it has. Yes, if you’re trying to lose weight you should cut down on your calorie intake but don’t take it to an extreme. Keep in mind that your body needs a certain amount of calories per day just to function..

“Your metabolism isn’t fixed. You can impact it significantly with your daily activity and diet.” –Gary Ditsch, Exercise Physiologist

66 DESTINATION RIYADH

To boost your fat burning: Do one to three sets each of five resistance exercises, such as push-ups and squats, three days per week.

Things that speed up metabolism are…

CALCIUM, FIBER AND PROTEIN!

CAFFEINE: According to the International Journal of Obesity, consuming caffeine can increase your body’s metabolic rate but just by four to five percent. Don’t go overdosing on caffeine though – too much of it can lead to unwanted consequences.

Protein can increase your metabolic rate by up to 35 percent, and fiber can increase it by up to 30 percent. Calcium is a major contributing factor leading to an increase in your metabolic rate because a diet high in calcium helps you burn more fat. So add lots of milk to your groceryshopping list!

UP ALL NIGHT? The Perfect Snooze No one can deny the beauty of sleep, but sometimes we can forget about the power of sleep. We spend a whopping one-third of our lives snoozing, and the quality and depth of our sleep counts. We’ve collected some thorough information from various certified medical sources on how to give yourself the perfect night’s sleep you deserve.

1. CREATE A BEDTIME RITUAL This could be anything from stretching, watching a light TV show, reading a comforting book or praying – as long as it is relaxing to you. After a few days these activities will be a signal to your body that it’s time to sleep. 70 DESTINATION RIYADH

2. FEEL SAFE The bedroom must give the feeling of safety and comfort. Shut the doors and windows, lock the front doors and turn off what needs to be turned off. The ancient Chinese architectural practice Feng Shui prefer to have the bed not facing the door, to give the sleeper the feeling of being enclosed and safe. Also, keep everything you might need right at your bedside table.

3. PREPARE THE BEDROOM Soft neutral colors are best for the bedroom. Find soft fluffy sheets in a comforting light color that keeps you nicely bundled up – like a nest! Make sure there aren’t too many distractions but don’t leave the bedroom bare and empty, the idea is to create the feeling of being hugged! 4. START DIMMING EARLIER The main element that affects sleeping is light, it affects how much melatonin is produced in our brain, which controls sleep and wake cycle. Thus, working on dimming the lights gradually till you go to sleep is key.

SNORING: What you should know... By Fatmah Azam Ali

A shocking fact: almost 45 percent of adults snore in their sleep. Snoring happens when the tissues vibrate due to turbulent airflow in your sleep. While there are many biological reasons as to why snoring takes place, it is definitely interesting to know how we can stop snoring in our sleep. • WEIGHT ISSUES: Try losing a couple of pounds to see if your snores are reduced as extra weight around the throat may make you snore. • NASAL STRIPS: People tend to snore if their noses are blocked. Try using the nasal strips to solve the snoring issue. • REMOVE ALLERGENS: If you are allergic and are on sedatives that can be just the root problem you were looking for to get rid of your snoring. • LACK OF SLEEP: If you weren’t having any proper sleep lately, all that snoring is due to lack of sleep. • DEHYDRATION can also be one of the reasons as to why you snore. The stickier the nose secretions become due to dehydration, the more you snore. • SEEKING MEDICAL HELP: If you have tried everything above and notice that everything is OK and yet you are snoring, you should seek medical help immediately where the doctors will check you for the obstructive sleep apnea, a serious medical condition that requires treatment.

5. LIMIT DAYTIME NAPPING Napping is a must for some people, but sometimes you get more than you need. You should nap light and not go into deep REM sleep, and limit it to 20-30 minutes and in the afternoon. Otherwise, over-napping can make you feel groggy and tired.

6. SLEEP WHEN TIRED Sometimes we can force ourselves to bed and we get stressed over not sleeping to the point where we can’t sleep. Harvard Medical states that if you’re not asleep after 20 minutes, get up and do something relaxing like reading until you feel tired. Constantly checking the clock could also induce more stress.

7. SOUNDS The soothing sound of the A/C is an actual reason for better sleep, that’s why white-noise generators are made. Having a consistent sound masks all the other small sounds that could make someone alert. DESTINATION RIYADH 71

7 MUST-DO

HEALTH RESOLUTIONS

FOR 2014 By Fatmah Azam Ali

With the new year around the corner, we think about what we should be doing differently and better this year in order to be a better person or in a better health. If you made 20 resolutions, naturally, you will make up to at least five, which definitely is quite an improvement. According to me, our health changes every year and so do our resolutions. I’d like to list the top seven “must-do” health resolutions this year for most of us... 6. Re-collect school memories: Have a reunion this year. Live how you lived earlier. The change this reunion would bring, you will surely thank me later (**winks**) 1. Losing weight: If you are one of those healthy individuals who work out and look after their weight, good job! But if you don’t, lose no hope! There is nothing more encouraging than making a new health resolution to make a better you in this new year! 2. Call your loved ones: Let’s admit - we are losing contacts and are hardly even chatting online with our loved ones - thanks to our ever-going busy routine. This year, we keep in touch with all by giving a call or sending a message to at least one of our loved one every week.

72 DESTINATION RIYADH

3. Quit smoking: It does no good, we all know that. Going cold-turkey entirely isn’t going to help so the best thing is to reverse your way of thinking. Imagine how much money you are putting into something that is not even doing any good to your body. 5. Don’t get stress-busted: Tell yourself this year that you are not going to exhaust yourself until you are left for nothing. This year, you will exercise, do yoga and keep your work schedules straight and look after your health. Nothing is worth more than your health.

7. Travel: Travel to your favorite vacation spot, relax and think about life... in the way philosophers would... and all our worries would be washed away by just giving time to ourselves...

4. Securing your future: Yes, this is by saving money. While there are some gifted people who don’t really need to look into this, many of us still do. Save your money. Every month. By the end of the year, you would be so surprised on how much you actually have and you can definitely consider an investment!
