THUMBS UP TO THE USE OF ONLINE PLATFORMS KSA has recently witnessed a huge increase in the use of online platforms such as YouTube. In fact, statistics show that Saudi Arabia has the highest viewership in the world with 90 million views per day! But it’s not the views we’re talking about here. It’s the fact that Saudis are using a variety of online platforms and through them, they are speaking up and getting their messages across to the world.

ARABNET
The Who’s Who of the digital Arab world unite in Riyadh When the Who’s Who of the digital world unite with inspiring startups and subject matter experts, you are bound to have an event that’s bursting with insight, energy and a whole lot of innovation. Digital professionals from all over the region and beyond convened at the Kingdom capital for the second installment of the ArabNet Digital Summit held at the Four Seasons Hotel Dec. 3 to 4. From the get-go, ArabNet focused on the hot topics in the Kingdom. The event kicked off with a panel session on “Entrepreneurship in Saudi Arabia”. Panelists reached a consensus to empower the Saudi youth to take the road less traveled and pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations. 18 DESTINATION RIYADH
A prevailing subject throughout the first day of the conference was the current role and status of women in entrepreneurship. Panelists during the first session were quick to highlight this, with Riyadh Al Zamil, founder and chairman of Raz Holding Group, asserting that Saudi female entrepreneurs tend to be more serious and better than their male counterparts. Furthermore, the potential of female entrepreneurs were further given notice with a session later in the day on “Women in Technology”.
In order to promote startups, a culture of risk taking needs to be appreciated. - Omar Christidis, CEO ArabNet
Following through with the emphasis on entrepreneurship, an Ideathon and StartUp Competition was also held and gave an opportunity for creative and innovative entrepreneurs to showcase their work. Noticeable in the direction taken by these inspiring ventures is the focus on service driven platforms that aim to connect people together. One of the summit favorites is FeelIt, a social networking application that allows
you to share and trade relevant content that is anchored on feelings. Mohammed Al Qadi, the young Saudi behind the app, showed the makings of a promising new generation of tech entrepreneurs in the Kingdom, smart and creative with a friendly and positive demeanor that was simply contagious when we visited their booth. While the other startups equally deserve a standing ovation for the great strides they’ve made, FeelIt won the Ideathon as the best startup in the event. Sessions on digital marketing, social media and advertising in the era of the Internet were widely attended discussions throughout the remainder of the first day and flowed all the way to the second round of sessions. Day two of ArabNet gained a huge kick off audience with the much-anticipated “Instagram Commerce session. Marketers and social media enthusiasts listened in DESTINATION RIYADH 19
on the predicted trends for 2014 and the strategies that would redefine the use of the application for business and organizations. An emphasis was also given to producing regionally relevant digital material that engages and caters to the local sensibilities in the Middle East. One topic was the development of Arabic digital content. It highlighted the strides bigger web companies have taken as well as the efforts being rendered by local communities to carve a space that’s specially designed for the Arab world. With two halls simultaneously offering captivating panel discussions, the audience had the choice to sit in on a variety of topics. During the afternoon, people had the chance to choose between advertising and branding topics or to take part in the equally interesting forum on gaming and children’s content. The social media buzz and digital media is no longer just a medium or a passing trend. It has become a huge part of the market and society itself. In the last sessions of ArabNet, the cameras were turned on the producers and tastemakers that are shaping our digital consumption. YouTube mavericks like Kaswara Al Khatib, founder of the YouTube channel, U-turn, took center stage to impart their Internet wisdom. The Middle East is positioned to be one of the most potent regions for innovation and investment. It is both a hub for innovation while also being seen as an emerging market that ought to be focused on. At the end of the conference, there was no doubt that the future looks bright for innovative entrepreneurs. Digital professionals can no longer view the trends of e-marketing and social media as mere tools but are in fact a domain to master in order to push forward as an organization, a business or even as an individual participating in this era of connectivity and digital age.

Riyadh Writing Club: Hala Abdullah By Zareen Muzaffar
Hala Abdullah and Mashael Al Blehed, co-founders.
In Riyadh, sometimes the silent voices resonate the loudest. Armed with a desire to create a sanctuary for creativity and an avenue to express themselves, the ladies of the Riyadh Writing Club are making their voices heard and people are indeed listening. At the helm of this group is its founder, Hala Abdullah, who shares with us how they're pushing the boundaries one literary word at a time.
Tell us about yourself:
I am the founder and co-president of the Riyadh Writing Club, which was established on Dec. 9, 2010 and have supervised the extensions of our club to our sister clubs in Kuwait and Jeddah. I am a 22-year-old Saudi Marketing student with a passion for the English language. I started writing seriously at the age of 15 - really took it on as a part of my identity. In addition to writing poetry, I enjoy performing it.
22 DESTINATION RIYADH
What inspired you to start the club?
After finishing high school, I took a gap year where I just stayed home to write. To my frustration, I found the lack of inspiration to be overwhelming. I needed writers around me. In a place where creativity is seen to have no value and is not in the least way encouraged or appreciated, I needed to get over my lack of inspiration by finding people who understood what I was going through, and who thought the way I did: through writing. I needed to be surrounded by people who appreciated words - like me and who found salvation in writing.
How long did it take to gather club members?
We started off as four members; myself, my best friend and co-president, and two other girls. By the end of our first year we had about 15 members, and the number has been increasing steadily since then.
Did you use social media or word of mouth to invite more members to the group?
We use social media to put the writers' projects out in the world. Through Twitter, we reach both our members and our audience. We notify members of meeting times and venues and we notify our readers of projects being published on our blog. It's been very helpful having such easy-to-use tools at our disposal.
How many members are currently part of the writing club?
Currently, we are approximately 30 members in Riyadh, 30 in Kuwait and about four in Jeddah.
Can you explain a typical writing club meeting. What happens during the meeting?
Meshael Al Blehed, my co-president, usually starts off the meeting by reciting her piece out loud. The members of the club offer their constructive criticism; tell her what they thought of the piece. All members then read out their pieces. Finally, I finish off the recitations by reading my piece. As soon as the members tell me what they thought, I begin to tell them what inspired me to write about our project this way, why I chose to go about it in this manner rather than another, what I was doing when inspiration hit me - maybe even what song I was listening to.
Then every member shares their story, too. Once we're done, we as a club get to pitch in ideas for next month's project. Every member cites their own suggestion and we take it up to a vote. Majority wins.
Are the writings primarily works of fiction or non-fiction? How are the creative thoughts encouraged via the club?
That is completely up to the members. We encourage our girls to write whatever they want, however they want it (censorship begone!). So we get a mix of both usually. Our girls write fantasy, autobiographical work, existentialist poetry, feminist poetry, romantic poetry and prose, and so on and so forth. We do not limit our members to a style or genre, but rather urge them to go about their projects from a completely out-of-thebox perspective. It has paid off!
What are some of the challenges or drawbacks (if any) you may have faced?
I have to say, even though I had the great luck of getting heart-warming support from my family, not all my members have been as fortunate. Some parents did not support their daughters' decisions to join and that has been a difficulty we've had to overcome. The society hasn't been supportive either. Mind you, we are aware that we have our loyal readers, but still: our society as a whole doesn't recognize us still. Given that we haven't found any place willing to have us host our meetings we've had to comfort the parents by asking them to accompany their daughters to a few meetings if they so pleased. AUDI ILVER CREEN Unlike Iran and Egypt, with their rich cinematic history and worldwide influence in filmmaking, Saudi Arabia is not regarded as a Middle East country that encourages the art of making movies.
THE GHOST OF CINEMAS PAST Cinemas thrived in Jeddah and Riyadh once, and mostly screened Egyptian, Indian and Turkish films without government intervention of supervision. These theaters have been closed since the 1980s Islamic revival movement. However, there a few theaters that are for exclusive members, such as in KAUST and at the American Consulate. Interestingly enough, the last few major shopping malls in KSA have been built with room for a movie theater in anticipation and readiness. For the time being they’re used as bowling alleys and arcades, so who knows what may happen next. 24 DESTINATION RIYADH
Yet, during the past decade, Saudis have emerged with stories to tell with a camera. These Saudis stubbornly cling to their vision that the Kingdom today is ready for a film movement using Saudi talent in front of and behind the camera. If the recent success of Haifaa Al Mansour and the myriad mini-movies produced on YouTube are any indication, Saudi Arabia is on the cusp of developing an industry that will unleash extraordinary talent in the visual arts.
Nate Parker, Mohammed Al Turki, Nicholas Jarecki and Richard Gere
MORE SAUDI FILMMAKERS
MOVING ON, MOVING ONLINE
Saudi producer Mohammed Al Turki, a leading force behind the Richard Gere film “Arbitrage,” was born in Saudi Arabia and educated in London and the US, then broke in the movie industry with the 2010 “The Imperialists are Alive!” He has told journalists that being from Saudi Arabia has led him to stand out, and he seems to be on a roll with nine films under his belt as either executive producer or co-producer. Al Turki recently created RAV Raw Film Fund that will produce up to five movies a year over the next five years.
Passionate Saudi filmmakers also rely on YouTube as a platform to release their work. The successful production company U-Turn’s series about the life and times of Saudi youth, titled “Takki,” has almost 420,000 subscribers and has completed its first season of 14 20-minute episodes.
A Saudi film director who has addressed the issues of Arabic cinema is Abdullah Al Eyaf Al Qahtani. His 42-minute documentary titled “Cinema 500km” follows a young Saudi film fan as he visits a theater for the very first time abroad. He has also directed short films, some of which went on to be successful at film festivals. His last project “Aayesh” won best short at the Gulf Film Festival in 2010. Saudi director, the 22-year-old Riyadh native Al Mutaz Al Jifri, recently completed his well-received short film, “Officer Jack,” and actor/director/writer Tareq Melfi has also become a significant Saudi presence in Hollywood.
Arabic filmmakers have lately been moving away from heavy political and religious topics, which seemed to be the trend the last decade with international favorites such as “Paradise Now” and “Ajami," besides Nadine Labaki’s romantic comedy, “Caramel.” With “Wadjda,”Al Turki’s new projects and the general vibe of many Saudi YouTubers, audiences are eager for accurate portrayals of Arabs. The emerging Saudi filmmaker is providing those stories.

SAUDI WHO’S WHO
HAIFAA AL MANSOUR
The passionate Saudi director is making headlines around the world, and she’s sharing her thoughts with us here. 26 DESTINATION RIYADH
Haifaa Al Mansour is a Bahrain-based Saudi-born film director. She is the first Saudi female director to direct a full-length feature film. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Literature from the American University in Cairo and a Master’s degree in Directing and Film Studies from the University of Sydney. She directed three shorts, a documentary titled “Women Without Shadows” and the latest award-winning film “Wadjda.”
“Wadjda” is a sweet and easy story about a 10-year-old girl who just wants to ride her own bicycle, but it’s enjoying a much bigger achievement. “Wadjda” is a contender for best foreign film at the Oscars and Golden Globes and has a whopping 99 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is apparent that the world is ready to hear the personal stories of Saudi Arabia. “Wadjda” is a film that doesn’t protest and shout, unlike other Arabic films that have gained international attention. Not since Nadine Labaki’s 2007 “Caramel” has a celebrated Arabic film portrayed the region’s people in a humanizing everyday life kind of way. Al Mansour says she wanted to make “people laugh and maybe cry a little.” The first feature-length Saudi film directed by a Saudi woman is groundbreaking because it does not intend to provoke, but instead express relatable struggles and personal triumphs. The following are excerpts of Destination’s interview with Al Mansour: ON THE WORLD’S REACTION
ON HER CINEMATIC STYLE
Among all of the various challenges of developing the first film ever shot in Saudi Arabia, my biggest fear was that outside audiences would have a hard time relating to this foreign and hidden world that I come from. So for me there is nothing more rewarding than to see people all around the world reacting positively to the film and finding points of commonality in the story.
I really look for films that are true to where they come from and try as much as possible to capture the spirit of the place they represent. Visually I am drawn to films that have a neo-realistic, almost documentary feel. I like to feel as if I have found a window into a previously unknown world through a film. In Saudi Arabia a lot of artists practice selfcensorship, and try to play it safe, not knowing that making any type of art is putting out an opinion -- an idea. Even the most basic art forms somehow talk about the world and a person’s search for a place within it. If your goal is solely entertainment, your work will still have a perspective, full of comments and opinions. Not only in Saudi Arabia, but in the entire Gulf region you see that people are reluctant to form an individual opinion. These are tribal societies where individuality is vilified, where groupthink is seen as a positive part of the culture. So stepping out of that can be a painful, scary process, but ultimately extremely rewarding and beneficial to the society’s development.
Of course, I have been really excited to see people’s reactions inside the Kingdom to the film. We showed the film through a number of different embassies in the Kingdom, and we premiered the film in the region at the Dubai International Film Festival. I was so happy to see Saudis turn up at screenings and festivals all around the world. One Saudi student told me at a screening, “Now I know how Americans feel when they watch an American film at the theater.” That really made me proud and emotional!
DESTINATION RIYADH 27
"Wadjda" international movie posters from around the world.
ON SAUDI CINEMA We need to continue to build up an infrastructure for a film industry inside the country. That means both the physical infrastructure and the theoretical understanding of the craft. There is a whole new generation of young people making films in Saudi Arabia, particularly younger kids putting videos and clips online. I think the most interesting ones are those in which the filmmakers talk about their own lives and issues, and the world they live in. Some of the shows are getting really popular, and they are really funny! It makes me really optimistic about the future of the country. We need to continue to nurture these voices and provide platforms for them to tell their stories. Film is a great medium to present new ideas and perspectives, as it is a universally assessable medium. I hope that my film makes the medium itself less threatening to people who think it is intrinsically evil or misleading, and I hope it gives Saudis pride to see themselves and their world represented on the big screen. 28 DESTINATION RIYADH
ON CHANGING OPINIONS I’ve been very surprised by how much international audiences are open to foreign film, especially films from the Middle East. I think there is a misconception here in the region that our stories and films “won’t travel.” And there is no market to distribute our work. Having traveled quite a bit with the film now I feel like there is definitely an audience eager to hear from people in this region. I think film is a very valuable tool for combating misconceptions and for presenting a first-hand view of our perspective. I really wanted to put a human face on some of the issues that we talk about in such a theoretical way, and you don’t have to explain why a little girl would see riding a bike as something that might be fun. As the script developed I constantly tried to look at it from the outside, to the universal themes that it spoke to. I didn’t want to give foreign audiences the false impression that it would be an easy or acceptable thing for a girl to ride a bike around Riyadh, so it was hard not to want to put in a bleaker end to her journey. But I think the positive aspects of the film help
audiences relate to the story more and ultimately enjoy watching the film. Western audiences have ideas and concepts about women in Saudi but don’t know much about the day-to-day life of women in the Kingdom. It is hard to be a woman in Saudi Arabia and I want the world to know how strong the women are in my country. I’m not sure if there are misconceptions, but I don’t think people realize how strong Saudi women are. They are tough and sassy and the new generation has a whole new outlook and window to the world. They are empowered and motivated to improve their status within society in ways my generation could never have imagined. They are survivors. ON THE FUTURE I hope to continue making as many movies as I can in Saudi Arabia. It is such a ripe environment for drama, and there are so many untold stories yet to be told. The interplay between tradition and modernity creates just the right amount of tension for great stories. “Wadjda” is available on DVD starting from Jan. 20 on Amazon.co.uk

FAHAD AL BUTAIRY COMEDIAN AND HOST OF LA YEKTHAR ON YOUTUBE
What got you started as a comedian? Theater productions in middle school and high school. From there I got interested in stand-up comedy in college by going to open mic nights in local comedy clubs.
Based on your performances, what topic gets the most laughs locally from your audience? I think the most popular topics are ones that show the differences between males and females. Because as a conservative society, males and females don't really mix. So when you shed a light on these differences, they are funny to people. In addition to that, family subjects are popular.
How would your describe the general humor of people in Saudi Arabia? The general humor of people in KSA is pretty sarcastic with a slight interest in word play and social themes.
As an artist how would you define success? I would define success by the reactions of people. If you manage to garner the admiration of the majority and to upset the rest of them, then you have pretty much achieved success because without controversy you don't have real success.
What do you think is the biggest break you've had so far in your career? The biggest break I had in my career is managing to get a lead role in a regional cinematic production for the movie “From A. to B. by director Ali Mustafa. DESTINATION RIYADH 31

The type of music I like to perform is my own, the songs I write and produce and the songs that I make with my team and my producer Ayham Homsi “AY The Producer.” And just to add to the information, a lot of people around here think that Hip Hop and R&B are the same thing but they are different genres. To give an example of two artists, 2Pac is Hip Hop and Boys II Men are R&B/Soul. If you listen to both you will realize the difference.

HAMZA “AYZEE” HAWSAWI THE SOUND How would you describe the local status of the Saudi music scene? I would say that it is being built -- slowly but steadily -- with a firm base by the artists themselves.
How would you describe your style and genre? What type of songs do you like performing? My music style and sound as Ayzee is R&B/ Soul. I am a member of the music group called J-Fam and collectively our sound is a mix of Arabic and English Hip Hop and 32 DESTINATION RIYADH
I have been releasing a song every week on my social media pages and Soundcloud account, and working on videos on my YouTube channel. I have been collaborating with other artists in the region and performing in a number of shows, last of these shows was on the finale of “Arabs Got Talent” as the opening performance of the show. I performed with my big brother Qusai who's been one of the pillars of support in my music career. Together we sang “Eve,” one of the singles in his last album. It was an incredible show, we had a great time performing in it and the feedback was very overwhelming.
What genre or artist can you not stand to listen to? Now my answer might sound like a very diplomatic cliche response by a musician, but I made a decision to have an ear for all types of music. Only then I will be able to experiment and be innovative and create new ideas mixing different types of music and styles together.

fun ways. Putting a nail through my head gets a gasping reaction from the audience, but it's disgusting.
What got you interested in magic and the art of illusions?
As an illusionist or an entertainer in general, is there anything special you hope to accomplish?
Honestly, it was curiosity. I always wanted to understand and figure out how tricks were executed and this propelled my ambition to succeed in this competitive field.
What do you think are the most important elements to have in order to put on a good show in Saudi Arabia?
I hope to perform a trick on the world stage that challenges science or even nature and to have my name in Guinness Book of World Records. I also hope to start acting in the future.
The most important thing is the culture’s mentality. In KSA it’s hard to accept anything that is strange. I like to consider it a God-given skill, not some form of evil black magic voodoo (laughs). It is human nature to be afraid and to avoid anything that seems unexplainable. However, all my tricks and skills were acquired from years of training. Another important element is to have the support of the Saudi government for more entertainment venues and shows in the Kingdom.
What is the most memorable reaction you’ve had from the audience? Someone once fainted! That’s a reaction I’ll never forget. Young women always ask me the same thing: to read their palms and predict who their future husbands will be. I think they have a misconception of the term magic and what I do. Older women always ask if their husbands have other wives. For the men, they are always trying to reveal my tricks and show that they are clever.

VINYL MODE THE MUSICIANS How would you describe the local status of the Saudi music scene? Things have changed a lot the last couple of years. Since DJs started to appear in local magazines, we haven’t stopped hearing about new DJs everyday. This is good in a sense because it’s nice to see people getting more into the electronic music scene.
How would you describe your style and genre? What type of music do you like producing? Our style is a mix of house and techno. We love heavy thumping baselines that make your waist move, warm deep melodies that create our mysterious atmosphere, techno and minimal tunes that compose the underground feeling that we support, and the ultimate sound of the drums that set the pace and take you to a tribal experience. “Deep Inside my Soul”, our coming EP is a good example of our style.
Can you tell us what you’ve been up to recently in terms of performances and/or achievements? We have an EP coming out in April; we also finished a CD compilation that is coming out soon with Design magazine. Since the beginning of the summer we’ve been working on our weekly radio show “Mykonian Sessions.” Our monthly podcast “Tune Your Senses” has its own life by now. The past few months we participated in a few fashion shows with Ot Kutyr, Vicomte A and Louboutin. We also had the chance to participate in a benefit event, collaborating with the Zahra foundation and Ot Kutyr. It’s filled with great talents and lots of potential, but of course we as musicians are lacking some support in terms of live performances, sponsorship and local support.
If you were asked to sing one song that would make or break your career as an artist, what song would you choose and why? Saher: Vertigo, because it inspires me. How would you describe your band's style and genre? What type of songs do you like performing? Our musical genre is a fusion of alternative Arabic music, a combination of classical rock with Arabic flavors – you can call it Farabian Flavor. We perform balanced songs filled with rich musical compositions.
What genre or artist can you not stand to listen to? Saher: I generally enjoy all music genres, but if I had to choose a specific genre I least prefer, I would say Arabic Najdi music. Diya: I would listen to any positive and inspirational music genre. However, sometimes I can’t stand mainstream music. Emad: I would also say I don’t really prefer mainstream, whether it’s Arabic or international. Thamer: To be honest, I don’t really like Fayrouz.

HOMEBREW GAMES 2013 We thought long and hard about what we could write about in entertainment. Books? Movies? TV shows? Really annoying talking oranges? The recent decline in public taste that will lead us all into an apocalypse where everything is in different shades of neon, studs are the national uniform and the Nyan Cat as president and mushrooms are an accepted size changers. Wait. Mushrooms! Mario! Games! Games are awesome and they're entertainment! [We admit that it was a rather shortish brainstorm session]. CANDY SURVIVAL
REUNION
Everyone knows candy gives instant happiness. It’s practically part of the definition! (If only the people at Merriam Webster see it our way.) Turn the candy evil and what do you get? An awesome short game where you spend three levels trying to dodge homicidal candy to get to the end. More impressive is the age of the game’s maker, a cool 14. And I thought knowing how to press ctrl-alt-delete for the task manager was advanced programming when I was at that age. Tester’s tip: It’s all about timing and precision. And we love chocolate.
Brilliant, brilliant concept, graphics and execution with quite an important message. I can’t explain much to not give anything away, but you most definitely will not regret playing the game. In the beginning, I thought I was hearing my own heartbeat, but then I realized the sound was coming from the game. My only regret is I wish there was a longer storyline, or a sequel, or something so I could play more. Or maybe, cough hint cough, a point-and-click game in the same style? PIXEL UP Where should we start with this one? You play as a blue-ish pixel character that was kicked out of his land, and is trying to climb its way back up. On one hand, the game is really well designed. The main character looks adorable, and navigating through the main menu is quite fun. On the other… this is not an easy game. I don’t know if it’s a horrible lack of precision from me or just a general sadistic streak in the game developers, but my fingers had to be pried from the keyboard with a wrench near the end. If you’re up for a challenge, this is the game for you. Tester’s tip: Develop a rhythm to get past the numerous obstacles. Also, you can skip some of the levels. And don’t give up. STREET ART RYD As magazine writer Jennifer Berke once said, “Loving life in Austin Texas, where the graffiti encourages people to eat more kale.” So when it comes to street art, most of us assume graffiti. If you do too, then congratulations, you’re wrong! Street art is fresh and constantly portrayed through many mediums. Nowadays, one can coin it as guerilla art with a touch of bourgeois. 40 DESTINATION RIYADH
Similar to rap, street art emerged as the voice of urban youth influenced by the underground. As it was once the signature move of skateboard culture, hipsters emulated this urban ambiance into individualism. All in all, street art is a lifestyle statement addressing social tensions.
Banksy, as spontaneous as he is, can be dubbed as the founding father of guerilla art. While on his residency in New York, he turned the city streets into his very own wonderland. One can stroll around and call toll-free numbers listed by each of his installations to listen to his rationales. Another one of my favorites is the
unconventional Redball Project by Kurt Perschke. Though unlike the norm where street art should be conveying a subliminal message, his style is more of perception in the eye of the beholder.
DESTINATION RIYADH 41
Performance art also considered so, from self-painted artists staying sedentary to musicians playing live on street corners. In “The Artist is Present,” her last piece documented, Ana Abramovic challenges the urban trance of a fast-paced life. We see each other everyday on the subway, in a restaurant, crossing the street but we never take the time to actually connect with the person across from us. After all, eyes are the windows to the soul. Nonetheless, the most common form of street art is graffiti, and so calligraphies took the Arab world by storm as evident as it is in post revolution Egypt and Tunisia. The scene in Saudi has yet to make a bang. We have seen it go from writings on the wall to professional installations. A native colleague of mine, who is a graphic designer, used to design Arabic tattoos for clients while on his studies in London. It was rewarding for him to see his illustrations eternalized on moving canvases. However, Maison Bo-M was the first to commercialize the movement locally by launching (ISWAP: Impact Street With Artistic People) street wear in 2009. During its run, it was a good platform for emerging designers and artists around the region. Taking on Riyadh, Mystery Bin Bansky has been out and about expressing taboo issues of society. He took graffiti from gangster wannabes to full-fledged controversy. His stencil paintings force us to confront injustice. Another local phenomenon is contemporary artist Abdulnasser Gharem. He experiments with installations inspired by the development boom in the gulf region, conveying subliminal messages of individualism as part of his ongoing series “Restored Behavior.” He is known for his public stunt “Flora and Fauna,” where he wrapped himself and a tree in plastic.
42 DESTINATION RIYADH
One more talent putting the A in art is Ahmed Mater. His approach is evidence-based art. This is apparent in his work “Evolution of Man,” where the origin of oil connects with the theory of evolution. One of his central themes is the profound conflict of materialism, as he goes on to show in his installation and performance project “Yellow Cow” where he painted an actual cow yellow and opened a convenience store with Yellow Cow dairy products. I leave you with the words of Paul Cézanne as he said it best: “All pictures painted inside the studio will never be as good as those done outside.”

Our advice is that you join a four-wheel drive club; they know the terrain better and will help you get started. There are also forests that you can visit for long walks if you are not yet ready to take on a more mountainous challenge.
We don’t have an ocean here but we do have sand. Similar to snowboarding, sand surfing is all about riding down a dune while strapped to a customized board. It’s a real recreation sport by the way and competitions are held in other parts of the world. If you ask us, Riyadh can easily become the sand boarding capital of the world.

NAJDI GAMES FROM YONDER PAST By Johara Al Mogbel
Whenever Saudis were mentioned in Western media back in the 1970s and '80s, a picture of a grim sheikh and his slightly grubby son and a woman in an abaya would usually be accompanied. Looking at those depictions now, you’d think we were rather humorless with very serious children. The good news is, we actually know how to play! And since there isn’t a record of the games children used to play back then, we decided to put together a few examples for you, taken from the memories of our parents and grandparents.
01.
WHO’S THE WOLF Items Needed:
• • •
People A screen or wall A large space.
How to Play:
One child would be chosen as the “lumberjack” (usually the eldest or the coolest kid in the bunch) and the other kids would be designated as “wolves.” The wolves would hide behind the wall that would stand as the door. The lumberjack then knocks on the door, calls out “who’s the wolf” and guesses a color. If one of the wolves happened to be wearing the color guessed, that person then
50 DESTINATION RIYADH
had to run out in a full circle across the room and try not to get caught by the lumberjack. The game ends
when all the wolves get caught, and the first one tagged plays the lumberjack the next time.
03. DINEENA
Items Needed:
•
THIS IS AN INTERESTING ONE! 02.
SEVEN OF STONES Items Needed:
• • •
Seven cans or flattish Stones A small plastic ball, Two teams (minimum of two players on each team)
How to Play:
It’s like an odd mixture of jenga, tag, cricket and a shoot’em fair game. To begin with the stones or cans are stacked in a pyramid, then each team member takes a turn throwing the plastic ball at the pyramid carefully enough as to avoid knocking over any stones. If a team knocks over the pyramid, then an opposite team member would try to grab the ball and take out an “enemy” before they manage to rearrange the pyramid. If the standby team tags one of the offending team, they win. If the offending team restacks the pyramid on time, they win!
• •
A used cheddar cheese can (opened from both
sides and then flattened)
A used bicycle tire Stick of some sort
How to Play:
This game is one of the oldest and probably the most rare to find kids playing with nowadays. The cheese can, after being flattened, would be inserted at the end of the stick and hooked into the old bike tire or rim to make a wheel that can move with the kid. The contraption would then be used as a car in mockplay, or a bike, bus, train or even in races.

IF YOU’RE SAUDI AND HAVE NEVER PLAYED CARROM, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH YOUR LIFE! How to Play:
Carrom is sort of reminiscent of a billiards table, if billiards were a lot cheaper, smaller, and you played it with your fingers. The general idea of the game is to collect as many points as possible by flicking your own carrom chips into an assigned pocket. There are two opposing members (or teams), and each member gets nine carrom chips. The chips
52 DESTINATION RIYADH
are arranged on the board within the circle with the red chip in the middle. Players go in turns from their side using the white puck to flick the chips. There’s a catch, though. Whoever gets the red chip must immediately pocket one of their own chips or otherwise the red one goes back into the middle of the board. The person or team with the most points, of course, wins!

We hope you do get a chance to try any of these wonderful old pas vtimes out though, and do drop us a line telling us how it went if you do! THE BOND One Trunk Show to Rule them All
It’s always a delight and inspiration to stumble upon young Riyadhis who not only strive to pursue their dreams but in the process bring the city to new heights. At the Bond Trunk Show held Dec. 17 - 19 at the Maison Bo-M Gallery, we witnessed the coming together of the next generation of designers that will place Riyadh on the map as a fashion capital. The Bond represents the gathering and coming of age of promising local designers who share a flair for unique, edgy and fashion forward designs. The collections had a touch of international influences synergized with the cosmopolitan local scene. Harboring a common history, friendship and love for fashion and the arts, they have united their distinct identities in order to usher in a new fashion movement to the city of Riyadh. The whole air of the event spoke of high fashion and each designer was an absolute pleasure to talk to. Mishael Al Rajhi shared with us the story of the twins and their polarized style identities that is captured by Micci & Mishi. This results in a high casual
fashion line that is able to be chic and edgy all at the same time. Her latest collection is an automotive interpretation through shades and textiles with a touch of urban grunge. Mishael is a promising designer that everyone should watch out for. Another interesting designer we’ve had the pleasure of meeting is Haifa Fahad, the style genius behind YooYoo. Her latest fall/winter collection was true to the whole idea of being punk grunge sophisticated meshed with a Japanese avant-garde cut. Highness by Haifa Al Ibrahim showcased chic and elegant designs that gave us a feeling of warm glitz and soft glam. For Dolls and Skulls, the designer Amal Goblan went playful with her collection, it was sweet and hip … and yes, we loved the prints. Last but not the least is Didi Assay, a designer who wowed us with her the elegantly flowing ensembles. Destination Riyadh is seeing a fabulous year ahead for the fashionistas of Riyadh. Surely, with local designers like these pushing the boundaries of style, it won’t be long before these artisans invade the international arena. DINING AROUND TOWN
FUN DINING
It’s always a pick-me-up for Riyadhis to find one stop shops that give us both a dining experience as well as a little entertainment. The Destination team went around the city again to find you some interesting places that bring “Eat and be Merry” to life:
FANS UP KING ABDULLAH RD.
An all-male sports bar that also doubles as a multiplex. The main attraction in Fans Up is its 100-seat cinema for guys who’d like to go XXXL on their football watching experience. They serve up basic café food and the hot drinks on their menu, particularly the mocha is all the rave among young Riyadhis. LOCATION: King Abdullah Rd. TEL: +966-11-2295329

THE DINNER CLUB BY No. By Lama Alem
Having a dinner in an abandoned pool or on the back of a truck may not sound like your idea of a fancy dinner, but the two women behind The Dinner Club by No. 57 have managed to organize dreamlike dinners in the most unusual settings around the world. To learn more about this one-of-a-kind project, we spoke to the two hosts who have been organizing these ethereal dinners for a year now, Buthaina Al Mazrui and Alamira Noor Bani Hashim.
Tell us a little bit about yourselves.
We’re a two-woman team who love to design/ decorate (Noor) and cook (Buthaina). We have completely different personalities – we balance each other out. We both trust the other’s taste 100 percent, and never question anything that the other one envisions. We love, love, love a good burger, but we’ll never agree on our Coke (Buthaina) versus Diet Coke (Noor) argument. Or on an Instagram filter!
What’s the idea of the Dinner Club?
It is a new way of experiencing food by way of an underground supper club. Every month, the hosts choose a different location, gather a group of unique individuals, and serve delicious food. Think of it as a surprise underground party for your senses. But better. 66 DESTINATION RIYADH
How did you two come up with the idea?
We were getting restless about the opening of our café, No. 57, (in Abu Dhabi), that we decided to take matters in our own hands and started planning dinners, which meant we could still entertain and feed people, not in a café, but in a different location each time. What differentiates The Dinner Club from other supper clubs around the globe is that we host dinners in crazy locations rather that a restaurant or a home.
Why “57”? That is part of the mystery of our brand! We’ll tell you once our café, No. 57, opens. Maybe.
Where do you find inspiration for your dinner events?
We come up with an ideal setting first and then try to find where that location is available. Once Noor steps foot in the location, it comes to her. It gets tweaked a little bit as we work on the test set up, but the theme is always concrete from that original moment of seeing the place. By now, although every dinner has a different set up, we’ve developed a kinda of “dinner club-y” look and feel but it really comes from the space we find.
What do you look for when you’re choosing a location?
We never hosted it at a restaurant or a home. That’s part of The Dinner Club rules. We always host it in places you’d never expect to have a meal. The older, the more broken down, the better. And the sky has been the limit for us, hamdillah. We’ve hosted a dinner in a construction site, in an abandoned pool, in a film studio, in a bus, in a wind tower and recently on an abandoned dhow parked in the fish market. We look for places that we can transform, or that we can juxtapose a beautiful table against.
Buthaina Al Mazrui and Alamira Noor Bani Hashim
What kinds of obstacles have you faced so far? And how do you deal with them?
We’re always challenged obviously with our choice of location and the logistics that goes behind it all. For example, gutting out a bus and filling the roof with flowers and making it look pretty for a photo shoot then driving the bus, filled with all the fine China inside, very carefully to a different, more secluded location, or our generator going out right before guests arrive. We wish we had a better answer but really we just have to deal with things on the spot and hope for the best. Guests are always so wonderful and most of the time they don’t even realize what went wrong. The energy of our dinners is so beautiful. We are so thankful, so nothing can really get in the way of ruining it for us once the first song is played, and the guests start to arrive. DESTINATION RIYADH 67
What was your favorite dinner to organize so far?
We get asked that a lot and it is so hard to choose! I think our favorite was the first dinner we held in the construction site of Noor’s new villa, because we had no idea what we had just created and we were doing it purely for the love and passion we have for décor and food and hosting guests. We recently celebrated our big one-year anniversary, and held it at the same location as our first dinner, to come full circle, except this time we transformed the place into a Museum of Natural History and had elements from each of our dinners there. We invited 57 guests. It was really humbling to see how far we have come and that we still have the same passion and intensity for it.
What’s next for the Dinner Club?
Expect a few more international dinners. Other than that, we can’t reveal anymore. The mystery is all part of the experience!
Did you have any dinners in Saudi?
We haven’t, no, but we have done one in collaboration with the Saudi designer Razan Alazzouni in Delhi a few months ago. We do have something planned in the works for Saudi but we can’t reveal anything yet.
68 DESTINATION RIYADH
Do you have any tips to share with those interested in gastronomy and organizing events?
Make sure you consider transportation of your food (if you are hosting a dinner somewhere other than your home). Avoid things that need to be served piping hot. Try to avoid doing what everybody else is doing and come up with something on your own. Embrace DIY! People love when they see the effort and time you have put into something, and don’t take yourself too seriously! Have fun! CITIES' SECRETS We all have our favorite travel destinations, and sometimes we can be repeat offenders and go a few more times, but that can get a bit boring. And when going on an extravagant trip, we gotta make it worth it! So after you’ve checked out all the usual tourist spots (and traps!) here a few more options that even locals don’t always experience.
LOS ANGELES, USA The Channel Islands & Catalina
For a break from the city and Southern California, and for something that looks different, take a little trip to one of the eight islands along the Santa Barbara Channel. Catalina has luxurious restaurants, resorts and also a cool zip line eco tour. The other islands are great for secluded beaching, hiking, boat rides and photography.

Sounds like the best view in Paris. Prices are amazing as well! And seriously? Flying a hot air balloon over Paris?! Only a few things could be cooler.
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
Underground Tour, Basilica Cistern
PARIS, FRANCE
For an otherworldly, and mystically creepy look into Istanbul’s past, explore this underground waterway that used to bring drinking water into Istanbul. Three-hundred thirty-six columns are dimly lit as you walk around canals that are alive with flittering fish. As if that wasn’t creepy enough, watch out for the upside down statue of Medussa.
Explore The Big Neighborhood
For a slice of the more authentic and less touristy Paris, definitely cut up a large wedge of the Northern parts. What some call “le grand quartier,” the 9th, 10th, 17th, 18th and 19th quarters are where you need to be. Don’t be afraid to wander away from the city center. DESTINATION RIYADH 71
LONDON, UK Frolic at Richmond Park
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
For a break from the city, you can go horseback riding, cycling, fishing, play rugby like a Brit, or just about anything you’d like to do at a park at Richmond. There is a lot more space than Hyde Park, it’s three times bigger! You’ll also encounter herds of Red and Fawn deer. You’ll also find the Pembrook Lodge restaurant with its glorious views of the Thames Valley.
The Prince’s Islands Mystical forests, horseback riding, cycling and fantastic seafood await you at the Prince’s Islands! Go on the weekdays to avoid the crowds and go for Buyukada, which has many fish restaurants by the water and historical sights, or Heybeliada with its beautiful wooden mansions covered with forests. And it’s only $2 for a ferry ride!
LONDON, UK Time Travel at Inns of Court
For an inside and immersive look into London history, check out the Hogwarts-like Inns of Court. Established in the 1300s, the walled compound still hosts judges and barristers. Step into an Elizabethan banquet room to check out how the high court used to party.

CAMEL MILK AN ELIXIR FROM THE DESERT By Layla The knowledge of the healing powers and nutritious benefits of camel milk have been known to nomadic peoples from Mongolia to Africa for thousands of years. The Bedouin saying, “water is the soul, milk is the life” may prove to be true due to the miraculous properties of camel milk. Reports of the healing powers of camel milk have been recorded from the times of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh).
Camel milk is growing in popularity worldwide and has even been dubbed the new super food because it’s high in nutrients and minerals as well as having numerous healing properties. This wondermilk has also shown the ability to help heal food allergies and chronic gastrointestinal problems. Scientists have been conducting research after finding new conditions and diseases that can be treated, prevented or even cured with consumption of camel’s milk. The latest studies have found that camel milk inhibits the growth of certain cancer cells; in one study it
was found the tumors shrank 56 percent in just two days of high doses of camel milk. Parents of autistic children have found camel milk to help their children perform better and to alleviate symptoms of autism. Camel’s milk is by far the closest to human breast milk than any other animal’s milk, yet to most people camel milk still remains a mysterious and strange substance, which many are afraid to try. Not only is camel milk easier for the human body to digest, making it suitable for lactose intolerant CAMEL'S MILK HAS NUMEROUS HEALING FACTORS WITH ANTIVIRAL, ANTI-FUNGAL AND ANTI-BACTERIAL PROPERTIES. DID YOU KNOW THAT CAMEL’S MILK IS BY FAR THE CLOSEST TO HUMAN BREAST MILK THAN ANY OTHER ANIMAL’S MILK

people as well, it’s also rich in vitamins and minerals, containing 10 times as much iron and three times as much vitamin C as cow’s milk.
is high in lactic bacteria, which have been shown to be effective against pathogens including Bacillus, Staphylococcus, Salmonella and Escherichia.
The most beneficial and nutritious camel’s milk comes from camels that graze freely on a certain type of grass; they are commonly referred to as milch camels. Freshly milked, unpasteurized milk has the most health benefits. However, caution should be practiced as the freshly milked version might in rare cases contain parasites if the camels have not been kept well and healthy. Unfortunately, pasteurizing the milk does remove some of the health benefits but it’s still advised to go with the pasteurized version. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid unpasteurized camel milk.
The most well-known health benefit of camel milk is probably its use as adjuvant therapy in management of both Type 1 and 2 diabetes. The milk contains 52 units of insulin per liter and is as a result a very effective and all-natural way to control blood sugar levels.
Camel's milk has numerous healing factors with anti-viral, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Fermented camel milk
Perhaps the most remarkable property of camel’s milk lies in its ability to kill cancer cells and reduce tumor size. In recent years Saudi scientist Dr. Faten Abdul-Rahman, a researcher of the healing properties camel milk and urine, found in her studies that the most powerful anticancer effect comes when camel’s milk and a small amount of urine are consumed together. In addition to the internal benefits, camel’s milk and even urine can also be used as external healers for the skin. Thanks to the natural moisturizing and whitening properties, camel's milk and urine as beauty ingredients is on the rise. Not only does camel's milk make for more moisturized and supple skin, it's also said to have anti-aging benefits, thanks to elastin, vitamin C and lanolin. Bedouin women have used camel urine for centuries as a beauty product, which whitens the skin and lightens the hair. To get your dose of the miracle milk in Riyadh check the Al Watania stores, which stock pasteurized camel milk. If you’re looking for the raw and freshly milked version, visit Riyadh’s camel souq on Thumamah Road during Maghrib prayer when the camels are milked. It’s a good idea to bring your own containers. The milk lasts for about three days in the refrigerator and it can be frozen for later use. DESTINATION RIYADH 75
