T H OUG H TS TO PONDER Barton Willmore International, one of the UK’s leading independent planning and design practices, is here in Saudi Arabia working on one of the world’s largest indoor botanical gardens in Riyadh. The first phase of the project is already completed and currently they are working on the second phase. The project is due to be completed in 2017.

The garden will be presented as a timeline that will guide the visitors through a variety of astonishing botanical gardens such as the Garden of Light and Sound, the Maze Garden, the Physics Garden, which displays an extraordinary range of medicine discovered in plants through the ages, and the Water Garden that will show water in all its forms, from ice to snow, to water itself and then to steam. These are just a few to mention but there are definitely more surprises in this place. For more details about this astonishing botanical garden visit www.kaig.net.

Thumbs Up to Environmentally-Friendly Schools Around 75 schools in the Kingdom will distribute iPads instead of textbooks. This move will make learning much more fun for students and most importantly it will protect the environment from pollution and deforestation. This thumbs up goes out to all schools that execute innovative ways to protect the environment as well as enhancing the students learning experience.

Thumbs DOWN to Not Enough Organic Shops The health benefits of organic food are countless. In addition to its benefits for the heart, immune system and more, organic food is always preferred because it is prepared without the usage of chemical fertilizers that affect the body negatively. We have a few shops in Riyadh that sell organic products, but unfortunately not enough. We need and want more, and we ask of the existing ones to speak up so we can find them all.

Amr AL Madani 20 DESTINATION RIYADH

By Hana Al Jazzar

In a country that is gearing towards innovation and development, Amr Al Madani had a vision to inspire our youth. This drove him to co-found the now multiawarded National TalentS Company, which earned Amr a name for himself in the field of Social Entrepreneurship and Education. His work recently landed him on the cover of Forbes MiddleEast and we thought it’s high time the city also got to know this inspiring Saudi. Can you tell us a little about yourself, your educational background and your current position?

What kind of services and activities does TalentS offer?

In 2007, after a four-year successful career at Saudi Aramco, I endeavored in establishing TalentS along with my friend and co-founder Saeed Saeed. Through TalentS, we truly believed that we could support transitioning Saudi Arabia into a technologically competitive country by inspiring youth to become science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) enthusiasts. We both quit Saudi Aramco together and we remain engaged in making our dreams come true.

TalentS mainly offers three types of services: My name is Amr Al Madani and currently I am the director of Mishkat Interactive Center • CSR STEM programs support for Atomic and Renewable Energy and cocompanies in shaping and realizing their founder of National TalentS Co. for Training CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and Education. I carry a Bachelor of Science vision through sustainable and highly degree in Electrical Engineering from the visible programs and events. University of Kansas and currently enrolled in the Program for Leadership Development • STEM Museum/Science Center Design at Harvard Business School. and Management offers complete solutions for museums How and why did you start TalentS? and science centers.

What is the concept and vision behind TalentS? TalentS is a specialized organization that designs and operates value-added educational STEM programs, activities and science centers. TalentS develops its own specialized content and programs to help clients reach out to Saudi youth. Focusing on the field of technology in education, we facilitate the learning experience and help our youth reach their potentials all the while enhancing their skills of acquiring and creating knowledge through creative and inspiring programs.

School STEM programs provide STEM solutions for schools targeting both students and teachers. These programs range from short-term training sessions to seasonal robotics competitions.

Can you give us some examples of where and how you implemented your services in different organizations and companies in Saudi Arabia? STEM Museum/Science Center Design and Management: TalentS led the development of Mishkat Interactive Center for Atomic and Renewable Energy, an initiative by King Abdullah City for Atomic and Renewable Energy. TalentS, through its international and local teams, managed content and exhibits design for the museum. TalentS also orchestrated all equipment and scientific tools needed to make the museum exhibit hands-on. CSR STEM Programs: Science and Math Camps: With our in-house expertise and extended local and international network, we DESTINATION RIYADH 21

specialize in designing and operating STEMbased camps that provide effective and high quality programs. Such programs are executed with Saudi Aramco, Siemens and other large corporations in the region. Fabrication Labs: Extending technology applications by introducing hands-on practical skill training in electronic technology, computing, coding, 3D printing and personal and digital fabrication using computer numerical control machining (CNC) systems. Programs for Gifted Students: We collaborated with Mawhiba (King Abdulaziz and his Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity ) to design gifted students’ summer programs, robotics competitions and the first national science fair program. Since 2008, we have been conducting various programs for thousands of gifted children. Our expertise in designing advanced content and operating specialized programs has helped them become more knowledgeable and help them excel in their specific fields of interests. I understand that TalentS organized The First Annual LEGO League, can you tell us more about that? Every year, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, TalentS runs the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Competition. Thousands of students from both private and public schools in Saudi participate and compete to qualify for the world finals. FLL delivers a stimulating learning experience. This is by encouraging students to build solutions for challenging and exciting problems using robotics engineering, coding and research. This year, 3,000 students and more than 400 teams nationwide will be taking part in the program. What’s next for TalentS? Over the course of the past years, TalentS has proudly earned the Saudi Fast Growth 22 DESTINATION RIYADH

awards in 2009 and 2011. TalentS’ board and management team will continue to focus on carrying out truly effective programs and services while expanding them into the GCC region in the upcoming years. We plan to enlarge our internal capacity for creative STEM programs and solutions, in addition to setting up creative project management and operational management systems. We aspire to grow and become the leading creative service providers in the STEM youth education landscape in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region.

BUNYAN CHARITY ORGANIZATION creating different ways of making a difference By Johara Al Mogbel

Fact: Arab generosity is the stuff of legends. Stories of Bedouins killing their most valued livestock to feed a wayward traveler are numerous. Remnants of the three-day hospitality rule to any guest still survive in this day and age. Coupled with Islam, which greatly encourages compassion and charity, Saudis are no strangers to helping the less fortunate. And there is no better example to showcase this than Bunyan. A charity organization founded by dedicated women of the society in 2011 and run by volunteers, Bunyan focuses primarily on helping impoverished families develop and progress into an economically independent state through the females of the family. The organization started as a housing charity, taking people out of crumbling houses and finding better permanent accommodation. But then the researchers studying the cases discovered that families more or less stayed in the same state they had been in. Some even moving back to their dilapidated houses because they had gotten used to the easiness of the 24 DESTINATION RIYADH

handouts they received there. And here began the organization’s real work. An education panel was put together, followed by a job-finding panel, and the women of Bunyan started to sift through the case files and push the families to put their younger kids into school, their older kids into college and find opportunities in the workforce for unemployed adults in the families. When there was a lull in jobs or a lack of seats in universities, Bunyan created new programs to suit the needs of their charges. A state of the art kitchen was built by a donor for a catering business, a home healthcare giving program, a children’s party event business, and an Islamic lending program and so much more, all for the direct benefit of the less fortunate families working with them. Where there was a problem, Bunyan DIYed a solution. And that is what makes them stand out, in our humble opinion. You can see where your donated money is going, as we did when we toured both the new apartments and the dilapidated houses the families had once lived in.

How can we help? Listed below are the main activities and programs Bunyan offers:

Souk Alataa (the market of giving)

time fulfills the need for Arabic speaking caregivers who will be more suitable in understanding their patient’s needs and requests. The program celebrated its second graduating class in March.

serves as a fundraiser for the organization’s various efforts. This year, the festival hosted a van to be painted by the kids, which will then be used to ferry help and goods to the families.

Tuhat Bunyan (Bunyan’s Chefs)

Furniture Recycling

They make great pickles and hot sauce. They also provide catering for an entire buffet with a menu of authentic Saudi dishes. The cooks are from the families and have been trained in various training programs. Proceeds from a certain dish or a condiment jar go directly to the woman who made it.

One of our recommended places to score a bargain, Souk Alataa is Bunyan’s aim to recycle and resell the branded donated clothes and wares they receive to better benefit their families. It’s held once every three months in Bunyan’s HQ and has everything from used Chanel bags and Karen Millen shoes to the odd tailored vintage dress or two.

Fikra

Home Healthcare Giver Program:

Kids' Festival

The HHGP was designed by Bunyan’s education panel to train young men and women to take care of the elderly and patients with special needs. It’s a six-month program that provides an upgrade in the students’ education and at the same

Another great idea, Fikra links talented Saudi designers with women from the families who have a knack for handicrafts but a lack of directive. Saudi designers then work on building a brand with the women they supervise, which they then produce and sell.

Once a year, the organization folds up its sleeves and prepares for a festival with arts and crafts and other fun things for kids to be entertained with. The festival aims to spread awareness among the society’s children towards the less unfortunate and also

Let’s be honest, how many times have we looked at the extra furniture in our living rooms and figured it would be better off as charity, without inquiring about whether it would actually be put into use? There are only so many armchairs a poor person can use in their apartment, after all. As a solution to this problem in an ecological manner, Bunyan decided to put new life into old pieces and sell them. Designers volunteering with the organization would choose the best candidates from the donated furniture and work on turning them into lovely modern pieces. Donations: The organization accepts all donations. Even SR 5 goes a long way. They also let you specify where your donation can go, whether it be housing, zakat, Eid, or any other form of giving you might be interested in.

SAUDI'S Top CSR Oriented Organizations By Naureen Subzposh

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is defined as the continuing commitment by businesses to behave ethically and contribute to economic development of the country they operate it while improving the quality of life of their workforce and their families as well as of society at large. By those standards, CSR activity is not something new in Saudi Arabia. In fact, we have heard and oftentimes taken part in various initiatives and events conducted by local and multinational companies for a fairly long time. Based on our analysis the top four companies who regularly implemented world-class CSR programs in KSA are:

AL BAIK: In 2010, Al Baik joined forces with the Ministry of Education and Khawater to launch the Feena Khair – My School, My Responsibility program that encourages elementary grade students to take pride in maintaining a healthy and clean school environment by spending the last 15 minutes of their school day cleaning their classrooms. The program now runs in more than 50 schools across Jeddah.

As if giving away heavily subsidized (and always tasty) meals during Ramadan and Hajj wasn’t enough, Al Baik has carved a special niche for itself in the sheer number of community development activities. 26 DESTINATION RIYADH

Inspired by the concept of summer camp, the Al Baik House Hero program also targets the Kingdom’s youth during the long, hot summers. The program teaches young boys and girls to do simple DIY skills like electrical basics and safety, plumbing, first aid procedures, fire safety and prevention, general household painting and maintenance. Al Baik has trained more than 5,000 young boys and girls in Makkah and Jeddah alone to help out more around the house.

Abdul Latif Jameel:

SAUDI ARAMCO:

Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives (ALJCI) covers a large spectrum of community needs. However, its greatest emphasis remains providing people with the skills to pursue their chosen profession and the financial support of small businesses and entrepreneurs.

Saudi Aramco has a long and cherished history of committing itself to do meaningful CSR in this country. It supports many charitable organizations such as the Joud Charitable Women Association, Al-Rahma Medical Charitable Society and the Saudi Association for Hearing Impairment.

In 2003, it initiated one of the biggest CSR start-ups in the Kingdom, known as Bab Rizq Jameel, which has since created more than 345,000 jobs for men and women. The main objective is to create employment and support small projects with an interest-free loan. The program also offers young entrepreneurs help to start their own business, which will in turn create job opportunities in the market. Other programs under Abdul Latif Jameel are Small Business Program, Direct Recruitment Program, Truck and Taxi Ownership; all these platforms create more employment for well-deserved citizens.

More recently it also launched its iThra (richness) Knowledge Program in Jeddah at Aramco’s training center in Briman. The iThra Knowledge Program in Jeddah recently ran a four-week exhibition that drew 500,000 visitors serving as a stunning showcase for talents from across the Kingdom and around the globe.

PEPSI:

PepsiCo, one of the largest global food and beverage companies, has a history of supporting numerous CSR activities and forums in the country. Most recently it was the platinum sponsor of the Saudi Arabia CSR Summit organized late last year in Jeddah for the very first time. In the last couple of years, PepsiCo has also launched the Karam Ramadan campaign, where it donated more than SR 1 million to Albir and Insan charitable societies for the care of orphans, to buy presents, clothes and an Eidiya, on the occasion of Eid al Fitr for orphaned children. MISHKAT

By Jou Pabalate

Growing up in Riyadh, my idea of learning about science outside the classroom was limited to a visit to the Malaz Zoo, a dairy farm and watching an environmental episode of Salamatak on Saudi Channel 1 (the song is still stuck in my head; I’m a ’90s kid). We didn’t have discovery museums neither did we know who Bill Nye the Science Guy was. Flash forward to 2014; the city has taken great leaps in creating learning hubs that aim to foster a more knowledgeable and scientifically engaged generation of youth. Leading this change is the King Abdullah Center for Renewable and Atomic Energy (KA CARE) that together with the National TalentS Company, created the Mishkat Interactive Center. When I entered the 4,200-square-meter science center, I was dazzled and awed. It made me want to be a kid again. The facility houses everything from interactive exhibitions, programs and the latest technologies in energy generation. The main goal of Mishkat, a name derived from the Quran to describe the light and guidance of Allah, is to inspire the youth to be energy innovators. It instills at an early age the important role we play in creating a greener and sustainable future for Saudi Arabia. And the best part? Mishkat and its science communicators make it fun, engaging and memorable for all ages — including adults. Here are the top five things to do when visiting Mishkat:

28 DESTINATION RIYADH

Be An Energy Explorer

The energy exhibition allows children learn about the different ways energy can be created, harnessed and used. Miniature wind farms, solar panels and robot arms and thingymebobs, the kids will have the chance to experience it all first-hand.

Walk Through the Energy Hall

The fancy lights and interactive panels will capture a child’s as well as your attention. After that, you’ll find yourself startled but equally fascinated by the different energy facts, big ideas and global environmental issues the installation tackles. The aim here is to let children think of the energy problems we have today and spark an interest in discovering their role in creating a greener future.

Invent and Innovate Your Future

Now is the time to inspire kids to be the difference they want to see. In the Energy Futures exhibit, Mishkat introduces children to various prototypes and latest technologies to make sustainable energy. In the words of the Lorax, “It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become,” and in this case, making them curious is a key step in molding little innovators and inventors of tomorrow.

Watch and Learn

Mishkat offers a variety of educational programs and presentations that are shown regularly. The large screen film areas allows kids to be submerged under the sea, get transported inside a nuclear turbine or be immersed a thrilling quick trip to space. There are also events conducted all year round including a high energy science show that makes you feel like you’re in the middle of National Geographic.

Drop By the Energy Store and Recharge Café

While it’s mainly a souvenir shop, the energy store offers recycled items, school supplies, energy saving gadgets and green clothing. It’s the first of what we hope would be a trend of green eco-shops in the city.

Quick Guide: • Book your class or group visit via: www.mishkat.org.sa • There’s no entrance fee for students • Mishkat is one of the friendliest environments for people with disabilities. DESTINATION RIYADH 29

GreenLifehacks By Haifa Al Sheikh

Completely altering your lifestyle to go green can be very discouraging for new tree huggers. The truth is, you don’t have to remodel your house into a greener one or mull over the necessity of every purchase. These simple tweaks to your consumption habits can save the earth, all the while saving you money!

Double-Duty It

Before you throw anything away, think of any other possible use for it. Chances are, you will find plenty. Even if you can’t think of anything, the Internet is full of all the ways you can double-duty almost anything. Carrying breakables in your suitcase? Instead of buying the not so green bubble wrap, store your breakables in socks, or wrap them up in a blanket or towel. 30 DESTINATION RIYADH

If you have empty pill jars lying around, don’t throw them away! You can store almost any small item in them. A great way is to keep your loose changes. Use newspapers to get rid of odors. Put them in your shoes or refrigerator and voilà! If you find your car stuck in the sand, slip your copy of AlRiyadh under the wheel to get it out and on the move.

Waste Less

2

3

Replace your on-and-off switches with dimmer switches. They enable you to control the brightness of the lights, which leads to less energy use and a notable reduction in your electric bill. Showerheads also have greener options. Install water-saving showerheads and faucets and you will only notice the difference in your water bill!

Another trick is to cool your home slowly rather than instantly, using less energy. You can also start to gradually turn the temperature up to adapt to hotter temperatures.

We unnecessarily waste a huge amount of paper and plastic, which can easily be reduced. And if you think about it, less waste means fewer taking-out-the-trash trips. BYOB. That is, bring your own bag. Think of all the bags you carried home only to throw away. Now you have a use for them! Instead of bringing home even more bags, just take one with you on your way shopping. If you have a cloth bag, that’s even better! You can also bring your own travel mug to your favorite coffeehouse instead of wasting plastic or paper cups. An advantage to that is a travel mug is less likely to spill all over you.

Waste less paper (and save up!) by printing on both sides of the paper. You might even go completely paperless and start saving all your documents electronically. It’s better for the environment and more efficient. DESTINATION RIYADH 31

LIVING GREEN IN RIYADH

32 DESTINATION RIYADH

By Jou Pabalate

As urban dwellers, the responsibility of creating a greener Riyadh rests on our shoulders as much as it does on the institutions that lead change in our city. You don’t have to turn into an eco-superhero overnight to do your part. In fact, we believe in small lifestyle choices that when put together, create a big difference. This guide won’t turn you into tree-hugging hippies (although we do tip our hats for these folks), but rather it’s all about doing what we can to build a better future for the next generation of Riyadhis starting now.

WATER IS THE NEW GOLD

Did you know that Saudi Arabia is listed as one of the countries with absolute water scarcity? Despite this, we also rank as one of the highest water consumers in the world.

Be diligent in reporting water leaks and broken pipes in and outside your home. Immediately call the NWC hotline: 8004411110.

WHAT YOU CAN DO?

Have plenty of bowls in the kitchen. When thawing frozen items, use a bowl rather than running tap water over it. The same goes for washing fruits and vegetables. Make it a habit to use a bowl instead of the tap for your ablution. When doing any of your grooming, close the tap. Leaving it open while you wash your face or brush your teeth wastes 16 liters of water per minute.

Use a bucket instead of a hose when cleaning your car, it can save you as much as 150 gallons of water per month. The National Water Company provides free conservation tools that can help you lessen your home water consumption by 30-40 percent. Simply order and install: http://www. nwc.com.sa/English/Awareness/CSR/ WaterConservation/Pages/RequestYo urFreeConservationTools.aspx DESTINATION RIYADH 33

POWER UP BY POWERING DOWN

WHAT YOU CAN DO?

Did you know that Saudi Arabia’s electricity consumption is three times more than the global average? Four million barrels of oil is used per day to power the country right now. If we engage in energy efficient practices, we can curve oil consumption by 10 percent in 2030, saving up to SR 50 billion.

Summer is here and if you want to beat the heat without racking up your electric bill, invest in curtains. Keep them closed on sunny days to moderate the sun’s hot rays. It will also help you turn off the air-conditioning in your house while you’re out without coming home to sweltering rooms. Solar power your laundry! Learn to skip the dryer and use an old-fashioned clothesline. Just make sure there’s no sand storm in the weather forecast. Develop the habit of unplugging electrical items not in use. Most home appliances continue to consume electricity when left on standby. Make use of extension cords with switches or power outlets with the same.

34 DESTINATION RIYADH

Clean your air conditioner filters regularly. The dirtier it is the harder your unit has to work thus using more energy. Purchase appliances with the Energy Star. This guarantees that a product is energy efficient and eco-friendly. Reduce your carbon footprint by not using your car whenever possible. Walk to the nearby mosque, bike or carpool.

DO MORE WITH LESS

Did you know that the GCC has the second highest level of domestic waste and Saudi Arabia is responsible for more than half of it at 58 percent.

WHAT YOU CAN DO? Supermarkets like Danube and Carrefour now sell eco-friendly woven tote bags. Don’t forget to inform the cashier and bagger so they don’t double the work of placing your items in the plastic and then the tote bag. Make it a habit to pack more in less when doing your groceries. You don’t need a bag for every two items. Also, if you can carry a purchase from the baqala, ask the storekeeper not to put it in a plastic bag. Reuse is sometimes easier to do than recycling so start with that at least: • •

• •

Return hangers to the cleaners instead of throwing them out with every use. Still have a lot of plastic bags? Use them for your bins, have one while your cooking for easier cleanup or as a makeshift glove when handling meat. Use water dispensers at home and in your office instead of buying small bottles all the time. Use reusable plastic ware and home cutlery rather than relying on disposables and Styrofoam containers.

Naqaa Sustainability Solutions Purifying the environment one company at a time By Anousha Vakani

Naqaa Sustainability Solutions is one of those local gems that sprang from the passion and creativity of young college students. Concerned by the lack of environmental resources around them and determined to be more than just a group of general environmentalists, three fresh graduates of Dar Al Hekma University decided to form a company that provides sustainability solutions to other organizations.

When and how did Naqaa Sustainability Solutions begin?

Naqaa Sustainability Solutions is an emerging social enterprise founded by three female social entrepreneurs – myself, Norah Magraby and Muna Al Amer. It was founded while we were studying our undergrad at Dar Al Hekma University in 2008. We had a common passion towards the environment, and we identified the great need for green and eco-friendly practices in the community. Instead of functioning as a group of general environmentalists, we rationalized our activities to focus on encouraging and assisting businesses to go green. We registered Naqaa as a formal company in 2011. Naqaa acknowledges the vast influence that businesses hold in society today, and as sustainability and green business holds a lot of value in corporate social responsibility, we help businesses make a more positive impact in the community.

In brief, what exactly does Naqaa do and what are its goals?

Naqaa assists organizations in Saudi Arabia with designing, implementing and 36 DESTINATION RIYADH

measuring their sustainability performances. We take on the responsibility of working as their sustainability department to plan and implement green initiatives. We aim to integrate corporate environmental sustainability in every Saudi business and to create value through introducing green practices that tackle environmental challenges in Saudi Arabia.

What inspires Naqaa to be green?

Our name is derived from the Arabic word Naqaa, which means “purityˮ– we value the universal right to have strong, healthy communities with honest and fair approaches to sustainable development. We not only have a personal passion towards the environment and sustainable development, but we found a gap in the community due to several factors such as the fact that school curricula lack strong environmental education programs, the Kingdom lacks the facilities that would make it accessible for the public to adopt environmental preservation practices such as recyclable waste collection points and finally that the local media seldom highlights the issue of environmental awareness.

You once mentioned that you are mostly contacted by international companies. Is this still true? If yes, why?

Yes, that is true. As business sustainability nowadays has gone from optional to a must, many companies have included sustainability in their core business visions and principles. Therefore, it was easy to work with them as these companies were already aware of the environment and of the social and financial benefits of implementing green initiatives because the concept of green business practices is mainly driven by their main branches.

Who are your main clients and projects?

Our clients include international and local Saudi businesses; NPOs such as Majid Society, SEDCO holding, Unilever, MARS, TOTAL, BUPA Arabia and Nestle. That is a major part of what we do. We also take part in community engagement campaigns, deliver workshops and organize online awareness campaigns.

Since the beginning of Naqaa and now, what changes do you see in the environmental awareness levels of people in KSA? What changes do you hope to see in the future?

It is increasing in all levels of the community, and we would like to see it continue. We would like for environmental awareness to start with the new generation in schools and in the local media. We would like to see more practical action towards environmental conservation and sustainable development with the collaboration of all sectors – public, private, NGOs and academic. We would also like to see laws across Saudi Arabia encouraging people to take part in environmental practices, such as making recycling a duty enforced by the government to individuals and businesses, in additionto other laws to avoid any kind of environmental violations.

“Our objective is to

inspire, support and empower the next generation of Saudi social entrepreneurs by serving as mentors to enable them to turn their passions into profit, as we have done with Naqaaˮ – Mona Othman, Co-Founder

DESTINATION RIYADH 37

Norah Magraby, Co-Founder

What are the most urgent environmental issues in KSA?

High consumption level of water in a country that doesn’t have much water resources, heavy independence on the usage of oil products, lack of public awareness of environmental threatening issues, lack of waste management facilities and pollution.

Lastly, what would you like to tell our readers regarding the environment? What can they do to make KSA greener? We all have to be very thankful to the availability of resources that we have today and the subsidies that we have been provided for by our government. However, everyone has to play the role of khalifa in our everyday lives because environmental protection is the responsibility of everyone – not only the public and private sector or the government. If everyone takes a pledge to adopt one eco-friendly practice such as using a refillable water bottle or think of ways an item can be reused before throwing it in the garbage, what a positive impact we would leave for future generations! If made as a habit as it would make a huge impact. Let's keep a green footprint. Email: info@naqaa.com.sa Web: www.naqaa.com.sa Twitter: @Naqaasustain Instagram: @Naqaasustain 38 DESTINATION RIYADH

Social Entrepreneurship Idea Lab Naqaa launched its Social Entrepreneurship Idea Lab on March 16 with a three-day workshop held at Nesma Training Center (NTC). The idea lab enables aspiring social entrepreneurs to network with like-minded aspiring and established entrepreneurs and will equip them with the knowledge, skills and information needed to start their own social ventures in KSA. With support from the Saudi-American Educational and Cultural Initiative, Naqaa’s corporate partners from the Washington Institute for Advancement (WIA), a public affairs advisory group and social enterprise in Washington, D.C., served as master trainers and provided leadership development support for the workshop. WIA will continue to support future Naqaa Social Entrepreneurship Idea Lab activities during the course of this year, while the idea lab also marked the beginning of an agreement between NTC and Naqaa, where Naqaa will serve as a “Community Shaper,” helping NTC achieve its vision of "a community of inspired, empowered people and organizations. Activities and events will be announced throughout the year on Naqaa’s social media pages.

Simple Steps to a

Greener Home By Jala Mohamed

God has blessed us with a variety of resources to continue to survive and build. Sadly these resources are limited, yet we continue to use them haphazardly. If we continue this way, we may end up losing them forever. When it comes to the environment, the first move should start at your doorstep.

Greener Home Appliance Using energy saving home appliance does not only save the environment, but it also saves money. The question here is how do we know which home appliance is sustainable and which is not when it comes to washing machines, refrigerators, water heaters and dishwashers? It’s easy to tell, because they usually come with an “energy rating” label stuck to it. The more stars you see, the more energy efficient it is.

Green Cleaning We use a wide range of scents, soaps, detergents, bleaching agents, softeners, disinfectants and polishes to keep our homes clean and sweet smelling. Did you know that most of these detergents include chemicals that are responsible for polluting streams and rivers? Most of these chemicals may not break down and

remain in the environment. These may enter the food chain, being eaten by aquatic creatures and perhaps eventually by us.

Your Behavior Counts As Well Being sustainable is to live in a certain way. In other words, changing your home into a more sustainable home is not enough. You must also change your routines and actions. This may include trying to consume only renewable resources, getting used to recycling, turning off lights and gadgets when not in need, installing compact fluorescent light bulbs, and don’t forget to change your AC filter as often as possible. This will reduce the power needed to suck in air.

Sharing Getting into the habit of sharing may also save a lot of energy. Offering someone a ride who is heading in the same direction as you may save the environment from

a lot of air pollution. Gathering in the same room as your family members to watch TV or just chill, may save a lot of electricity. This is because all of you will use one air conditioner and use the same source of light.

The best way to become green, and stay green, is to take as little from earth as humanly possible and to give more, by protecting it and spreading awareness. DESTINATION RIYADH 39

Growing By Hana Al Jazzar

Up Green

Every April more than half a billion people around the world celebrate Earth Day. What better time for parents to talk to their children about making the world a greener and healthier place? We have a few ideas to run by your kids, that demonstrate how simple human habits affect the planet and our environment.

Turn, flip, switch OFF:

Electronics and appliances have a stand-by function that uses energy even when they are turned off. By plugging electronics into a power strip and flipping the switch off when the gadgets aren’t in use, you’ll be saving even more electricity.

Pack Eco-friendly:

Packing lunch using reusable containers instead of plastic wrappers or bags, and refillable water bottles instead of disposable ones are beneficial for both the earth and your wallet. Go one step further to reduce your carbon footprint and prepare food together from scratch using organic ingredients from your local market.

42 DESTINATION RIYADH

Reuse packaging: Tissue boxes, milk gallons and coffee cans can easily be reused in creative ways, from fun art activities to storage and decorating. Finding a new purpose for an old or used item is the essence of recycling. Or simply collect them and drop them by the school’s art teacher, who will welcome them for school projects. Lights out: Reminding kids (and

sometimes adults) to flip the switch off when leaving a room is a healthy habit. And yes, this small effort can make a big difference! Especially if you replace incandescent lightbulbslight bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) ones. They last up to ten 10 times longer and use 75 percent less energy.

Get those little hands dirty:

Read Green: Giving back to earth and respecting nature can be instilled in kids from a young age, so they can grow up consciously taking care of our one and only planet. After all, our kids are the future. Reading books with eco-friendly messages helps reinforce the idea further. • The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss • My Earth Day Surprise, by Mercer Mayer • The Little Cedar Tree, by Salpi B. Simitian

Children love digging in the dirt so why not • The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle: get them gardening? Not only are planting A Story About Recycling, by Allison trees good for the planet on the long term, but Inches the experience can be very rewarding for kids, • The New 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do as they will take pride in watching them grow. to Save the Earth, by Sophie Javna

Throw an Earth Day party: Involve your kids and spread awareness by inviting some of their friends over and celebrate earth day on April 22. Suggest a carpool with friends to school, coordinate an energy saving campaign with the school , or host a swap party where kids can bring in old toys, games and book to swap. Be one with earth hour, for one whole hour join the world in turning off the lights and unplugging for 60 minutes.

THE DIGITAL DUMP By Jou Pabalate

After you’ve gotten bored with your smartphone or feel that your Smart TV isn’t as smart as the smartest television out there, what do you do with it? When the old fridge dies, do you put it out on the street and let the baladiya do their thing? The reality is a lot of us don’t know and don’t care what goes on after we’ve thrown our old devices out, which pretty much explains why:

Saudi Arabia produces 3 million tons of e-waste per year Saudi Arabia is responsible for 63 percent of the e-waste inthe Gulf. Only 12 percent of our e-waste is recycled. Your old computer is now in the middle of the desert or being dumped in Africa or Asia. (Not good, like lethal practices are not good).

For a country heavily invested in innovations and clean technologies, surely there’s a way out of the digital grave we’re quickly putting ourselves in. According to Nasser Al Dueb, the CEO of an e-recycling company, the Kingdom has a long way to go. What does that mean exactly?

End-of-life trade services should be adopted by electronic distributors. Drop-off points for e-waste materials need to be increased, collaborations with NGOs . E-waste should not find its way in the landfills and instead be delivered to e-recycling facilities. Companies need TO adopt proper waste disposal of their electronic equipment instead of relying on selling these items to scrap hunters. 44 DESTINATION RIYADH

Did you know? Recycling 1 million cellphones can produce 35,000 pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver and 75 pounds of gold.

Mobile devices, batteries and electrical appliances contain a lot of toxic elements. While a lot of the changes need to take place on an institutional level, here’s a few things we can start doing:

We can emphasize enough on the importance of segregation, make sure your electronic items including batteries are separated from the regular waste bins. Take unusable devices to proper collection points. Carrefour supermarket has a drop box for mobile phones and batteries. Trade-in your second hand appliances. Stores like Electro or Extra provide seasonal promos in which you can give them your old TV set to get a discount on a new one. You can sell your old computers, laptops and monitors at the Computer Souk area in Olaya. Donating your computer to charity is always a good thing, but please make sure it’s still usable. Paraphernalia meet the designer

Mohammed Khoja, founder and designer of Paraphernalia, is known for his edgy street wear style.

How did you come up with the brand name? Paraphernalia (pronounced: pay-ruh-fer-nay-lia) literally means accessory in Latin, which is exactly how I view my pieces. They are meant to complement the wearer and the only thing I can add to make them work, other than adding your own sense of style, would be confidence.

On some of your t-shirts, you have the niqaab and ghutra. Can you explain why? In our culture, we are often very much tied to our heritage as well as being early adapters of Western pop culture. Arabs, I feel, are masters in that balance. I always attempt to tie both elements of our culture to the current mood in an effort to tie tradition and modernity. I really want to present that same dialogue to my Western audience, both in terms of promoting positive perception and finding something to relate on. How did you reach Mac Miller? One of my friends is a stylist in Los Angeles and I gave him some of my samples. He showed Mr. Miller one of my styles, which is a semi all over print graphic manipulation of Saudi traffic. On one of the shoots he was working on and he loved it enough that he wanted to wear it right away and keep it! I got a few photographs of him in it, which was very rewarding to see.

I'm really inspired by old and ornate objects that carry a story and the current mood of Arab street culture.

Tell us more about your designs and what inspires you. I'm really inspired by old and ornate objects that carry a story and the current mood of Arab street culture, as well as over the top contemporary art pieces by artists such as Damien Hirst. I really try to take objects and symbols that people tend to overlook and re-invent them in various compositions to create a more contemporary format. What do you want your brand to become? Where do you see it in the future? I want to be able to expand into entire collections that excite people and merges both East and West in a highly contemporary format. Expect a lot of bold metallic elements, geometry, tartan plaid, all over prints, vintage Bedouin portraits and American Football jersey numbers in my next collection. DESTINATION RIYADH 49

The Juices

Worth the

Squeeze By Jou Pabalate

With summer coming up, we’re sure you’ll be in search of your seasonal refreshing drinks. Instead of popping the bottle cap off that soda, why not go for the healthier option and get your juice on? Now the truth is not all juices are created equal. If you’re not careful, you can end up buying a cup of sugar with a tad bit of fruit extract. Here’s what you should know: •

Preparing your own juice at home is always a better option to know exactly what you’re chugging down.

Your best bet to reap the health rewards of juice is to go for vegetable ones. It has the least amount of sugar and with fewer calories. Try tomato or carrot juice.

As much as possible, deviate from fruit cocktails. This type of fruit juices has very high fructose content with little nutritional value.

Believe it or not, the best fruit juice is pomegranate, not orange juice. Yes it’s sweet but it’s packed with antioxidants so the trade off per sip is good. Keep in mind that the Arabic for pomegranate is rumman. Use its local name when talking to the storekeeper. Add water to reduce the amount of sugar intake you get from off the shelf fruit juices. It doesn’t matter if it’s still or sparkling.

So here’s how we make your juicing experience easier. We’ve narrowed it down the ones that do serve freshly squeezed ones or at least gives you the option to customize your drink:

How awesome is falafel? Very, very awesome. Quite awesome. In fact, it’s so awesome it transcends all awesomeness to create a supernova of awesome that will one day rule the world. We kid, we kid. (Well. Not about the bit where falafel rules the world- Er. Ahem. That’s a topic for another day. But no, really, turns out the utterly delicious Arabic bean patty that is falafel is actually a lot healthier than we realize. Yes, even while it’s fried. To begin with, they’re made out of chickpeas and/or lentils and parsley, which are all so healthy they’re practically the food pyramid’s Justice League (if the justice league were a little better dressed and morphed into magic when mashed together and fried). As a result, falafel is high in iron and potassium (a 1/2-cup portion of falafel contains 3.42 milligrams of iron and 585 milligrams of potassium), and happens to be an excellent source of protein. They’re also high in fiber (18 grams of dietary fiber in just one patty), which your digestive tract will thank you for, and even while fried contains a significantly low amount 56 DESTINATION RIYADH

Yes, those are genuine scientific facts and not something we made up to justify our falafel lunch habit. Although, we’d like to point out that the aforementioned benefits will be canceled out if you order a falafel sandwich with the works or a side of fries. Instead, have them on a platter (up to four or five is okay, according to size and preference. “If Romania still only conjures up images of despotic leaders, failed communism and extreme poverty, then where have you been?” I wondered, as I found a different side to Eastern Europe’s hidden gem ... namely its Islamic history!

“Go to Mangalia, which is the Kaaba Makkah of the wandering poor people” an old man told me. It was quite the claim for an obscure town in the Southeastern corner of Romania. I was in search of the country’s Islamic history, which stretched back to the 14th century, and had arrived at the modest looking Esmahan Sultan Mosque in Mangalia, expecting very little. With an orthodox Christian majority and the recent communist debacle, Romania is hardly the place one goes to explore Islamic sites. Yet already the Dobrugea region along the Black Sea coast had thrown up quite a few surprises. “Moscheeea! Gooood!” said Lutfi, an elderly local 58 DESTINATION RIYADH

stand in varying stages of decay like proud soldiers refusing to wane. Each one has legible Arabic script, but even more excitingly, they are topped with high-ranking stone Ottoman headdresses. In a country where foreign tourism is as new as democracy, Mangalia doesn’t even feature on the domestic tourist trail with most Romanians heading instead for the 70s seaside resorts of Neptun, Olimp, Jupiter and Saturn a few kilometres north.

who I had just prayed Jum’a with me inside the Esmahan, a proud grin across his wrinkled face. He was pointing to the name of medieval Turkish traveler Evliya Celebi on the brown sign at the entrance. Celebi had authored the quote.

Yet the Esmahan sign suggests a far grander past for the little seaside town. During the 16th century, the princess Esma, daughter of Selim II and wife of the high vizier Sokollu-Mehmet Pasha, took refuge in Mangalia. Sokollu Mehmed Pasha was the

I smiled back; Lutfi was a Romanian-Turk, making him a modern ancestor of Celebi and the Ottomans that had once ruled over this corner of Eastern Europe. Meeting him had been almost as exciting as what I’d discovered wandering around his local moscheea’s overgrown cemetery. most powerful Grand Vizier in Ottoman history; so powerful that from 15651579 scholars claim it was he and not the Sultans who controlled the great Turkish Empire. If you chance upon the little square whitewashed building with its awkward minaret and un-mosquelike terracotta tiled roof, catching it maybe in the mid-afternoon sun when the elderly worshippers have gone leaving only the kindly Tatar woman in her little tea-tent by the entrance, you too will probably wonder whether such an unassuming place could really be linked to Mehmed Pasha. A classic devsirme story – the cruel Ottoman system that took young Christian boys from their families and made them elite Janissery soldiers – Mehmed was only 10 when he was taken from his Bosnian parents to rise steadily through the military ranks before his burgeoning talent was spotted by Sultan Suleiman “the Magnificent” who honored him as Grand Vizier in 1565. 60 DESTINATION RIYADH

I stared at the unkempt graves, wondering what other fabulous stories lay beneath. Lutfi and his little mosque – one of the oldest in Romania – were a fitting end to a journey that had begun 45 kilometers north in the city of Constanta, where obscure buildings with Islamic echoes and restaurants reminiscent of Istanbul serving dolma can be found mingling with monolithic reminders of communism. In the regional capital, you can marvel at the distinctly RomanianByzantine architecture of the Mahmudiye mosque, the seat of the grand mufti and leader of the nation’s 55,000 Muslims. Constructed in 1910 by King Carol I, a mere 32 years after the Ottomans left, the Mahmudiye is home to another national Islamic relic, the country’s largest hand-woven Persian carpet, a gift from one of the last Ottoman sultans, Abdul Hamid II. If you make it this far, be sure to climb the 164-

foot minaret to take in the awesome views across the Black Sea and the historic old town, where looking carefully enough you might just spot the nearby Geamia Hunchiar Mosque, one of the last built by the Ottomans in 1868. It was in the Hunchiar sitting in the dimly lit central hall staring at the blue Iznik tiles of the mihrab, that Saleh, a Muslim Tartar had turned to me and said “Go to Mangalia!”

Why Go? Apart from a hidden Muslim heritage, Romania has a buzzing capital with Bucharest offering a trendy art scene, exciting nightlife, beautiful boulevards and stark reminders of its communist past including the world’s largest civilian building. Then there are the rolling Carpathian Mountains offering dramatic film-set country and deep evergreen woodland. Around Dobrugea, golden beaches full of locals await while the north boasts the best-preserved mangrove wetlands in Europe with stunning wildlife and natural beauty in the Danube Delta.

Whether you take Saleh and Celebi’s advice or not, be sure to go to Romania for this is a country which, like its Islamic history, is just waiting to be discovered.

Who should go? The adventurous and intrepid; while Bucharest is continuing to modernize, Romania is not for those seeking luxury or the nearest McDonald’s. This is an insight into an old bygone Europe where tradition is the norm. What not to miss Yards from the mosque in Mangalia, in the direction of the beach there is a little patisserie with a fruit stall outside staffed by a group of warm Tartar/Turkish women who will happily make the tastiest baklava (Turkish sweets) in the age-old tradition before your very eyes.

Tharik Hussain is a freelance travel writer, journalist and photographer living in London, UK. He is particularly fascinated by the impact of Islamic culture on Europe. He is also the director of a sixth form center and a qualified Further Education lecturer of Sociology and Media Studies.

When to go? Between May and September, when the weather averages in the mid-20s. How to get there? Fly Jeddah to Bucharest via Paris with Air France, via London with British Airways or Via Amman with Royal Jordanian. Then take the intercity train from Bucuresti Nord to Constanta (2.5 hours) before boarding the regional train to Mangalia (50 minutes). I stayed at the seaside resort of Neptun-Olimp at the 3-star Recif Hotel. DESTINATION RIYADH 61

Green Design in Riyadh By Haneen Al Ghamdi

The buzzword circulating around the world of design, succeeding other trends in the past three decades, is green design. “Green” is no longer just a color when we speak of it in relation with design. Just like how green technology does not imply green colored iPads, green architecture does mean more grass and more trees.

64 DESTINATION RIYADH

Now the key question: does Riyadh host any Green Architecture? YES! The Urban Oasis

The “green” movement is based on the environmental threats we gradually, if not already, are facing. Hence, the term “green” triggered the initiation of a group of volunteers to be watchful of the behaviors we have towards our environment. In time, these efforts were transformed into Green Building Rating Systems for performance like LEED and BRE. So what is green? And is it the same as sustainable? To put it simply, a green building is achieved through one of the several green strategies that include efficiency in lighting, heating and cooling, water usage and ventilation. When all green strategies are covered, this type of building moves from being green to being Sustainable. Sustainable design is about achieving outstanding performance by adopting an efficient operation and maintenance of the building.

Believe it or not, the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) built during the 1980s is considered as one of the earliest accomplishments of green architecture. It was designed to appear like an oasis amid an empty desert. In oases, trees grow naturally without the need of maintenance. They grow because they are familiar with the soil and climate conditions that they become native plants to that site. Architects worked on this rationale and observed the natural plants that grew on the DQ site after a rainfall. From there, they nurtured these plants and planted more indigenous seeds from the neighboring desert on the site. With this, they’ve paid less for regular watering of foreign plants and maintenance and dealt with plants that require minimal watering. In addition, if you’ve observed the buildings at DQ, there’s common exterior feature between them: they are made out of clay and Adobe. Adobe is taken from the Arabic DESTINATION RIYADH 65

word ‫طوب‬, which is a native material from our land to withstand the dry, hot climate with its thermal features. Historically, adobe was used because it slowly absorbed the heat of the day, and slowly radiated it to the opposite side at night when the weather is colder, a feature that is called Thermal Mass.

An Arabesque Leaf King Fahd National Library’s renovation by Gerber Architekten. The new design allows for light to enter all day long through the glass and steel façade. The Arabesque fabric leaf exterior acts as a barrier from the hot sun, a light diffusor to reduce glare and a provider of a unified daylighting into the interiors. As a result, the energy consumption for lighting is reduced drastically during the day.

The Green District

Finally, coming to the most anticipated project in Riyadh, King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD). The architects behind the master plan design, Henning Larsen Architects, designed the urban district to be a sustainable urban development role model by providing more public and private spaces with the Green Housing lowest costs and best possible microclimates. This is achieved by carefully designing the Saudi Aramco’s take on the green matter is building materials and proportions to decrease quite significant. They’ve managed to obtain the weather temperature by 2 degrees. How the very first LEED Home certification you may ask? Through light-façade materials outside the US. This is for the housing complex designed by HOK in King Abdullah containing humidity, green landscapes and water elements. Architects also employed Petroleum Studies and Research Center shading devices to facades to decrease the (KEPSARC). The complex is comprised of 191 LEED certified residential and communal cooling loads on the buildings, intelligent units. In addition, the site also hosts the largest lighting to decrease energy consumption and solar panels. solar energy field to power the huge project. 66 DESTINATION RIYADH

SPIRITUALITY

Why You Must be an

Eco-Friendly Productive Muslim and How to go About it… By Nasmira Firdous

What role does a Productive Muslim play towards safeguarding the environment? What are the benefits and rewards of taking small yet crucial steps to preserve some of the most important treasures Allah has blessed us with? Doing your bit for the environment might seem a little too difficult initially, but doing so with the right intentions of pleasing Allah will never go unnoticed. While talking about how quickly the Earth’s resources are depleting is easy, doing what you can to save the environment makes Productive Muslims stand out from the crowd.

Conserving Water We all know how crucial water is for our survival but we tend to take it for granted. Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-`Aas reported that the Prophet (PBUH) passed one day by Sa`d ibn Abi Waqas while he was performing wudu.’ The Prophet (PBUH) asked Sa`d: “What is this wastage?” Sa`d replied: “Is there wastage in wudu also?” The Prophet said,“Yes, even if you are at a flowing river.” [Bin Majah] Subhan Allah! When was the last time we thought about making eco-friendly wudu?!

68 DESTINATION RIYADH

Food and You Many times we tend to cook way too much than what’s needed. Leaving the leftovers in the refrigerator (resulting in unwanted power consumption) or throwing them away (in effect neglecting the rizq that Allah has provided) will become inevitable. Abdullah bin ‘Abbas reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “The believer is not he who eats his fill while his neighbor is hungry.” [Al Adab Al Mufrad]

While you may not be living in a locality where your neighbor is hungry, you probably come across people down the street who are in dire need of a few morsels. So if you do have leftover food, try giving it to them when the food is fresh instead of passing it over when it has become stale. Like the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Love for your brother what you love for yourself!” [Tirmidhi]

Alternatively, you could use that food to feed the animals too. Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, there he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst and came out. Meanwhile, he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself, “This dog is suffering from thirst as I did.” So, he went down the well again, filled his shoe with water, held it with his mouth and watered the dog. Allah appreciated him for that deed and forgave him.” The Companions said, ”O Allah’s Messenger! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?” He replied: ”There is a reward for serving any living being.” [Bukhari]

Maintaining the Environment is Charity Many times, we wonder how and where we could give charity. The possibilities are limitless.

with the numerous environmental benefits. Now, let’s look at the Islamic benefits of planting trees. Prophet (PBUH) said: “If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (sadaqah) for him.” [Bukhari] So, if you don’t have the means to donate money for building a mosque or a well, and if you don’t have the time to impart beneficial knowledge to someone, you could still earn sadaqah jariya (continuous charity) by doing something as simple as planting a tree! Every time a person/animal benefits from the shade the tree provides or by relishing a fruit that was produced, you could be earning exponential rewards even after your death! So, take your family out and plant away.

Safeguarding and doing our bit for the environment by taking care of resources that Allah has subjected to our service is a Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Removing beautiful way of showing our harmful things from the road is gratitude towards Allah. Being an act of charity (sadaqah).” a part of this blessed religion allows you to earn magnanimous [Riyadh As Saliheen] We often see public places littered rewards in numerous ways with useless substances. Detox, Anyone? By Jill Calvert

How often do you hear people say, “Oh I ate too much on holiday or over a weekend at a gathering or just in the day and need to detox?” Most probably all the time! Well, with fast food outlets and not so healthy foods dominating supermarket shelves it’s not really surprising. But will a detox really help? Do you understand when, how long and how to exercise while doing so? Before I start I want to say that detoxing is only a shortterm fix! It is by no means a solution for long-term fat loss and health that is obtained through a healthy balanced eating pattern. The type of juice detoxing most do is not balanced for long-term optimum health. However, it does have benefits initially. So let’s get talking.

70 DESTINATION RIYADH

What is a Detox?

In the simplest terms it means cleaning the blood. It is done by removing impurities from the blood and liver, where toxins are processed for elimination. The body also eliminates toxins through the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph and skin. When your body is filled with impurities, they aren’t properly released and every cell in the body is adversely affected.

Do you need to Detox?

Here are some signs and symptoms that you may feel when in need of a detox. A detox program can help regain balance… 1. Fasting to regain balance. 2. Helps stimulate the liver to drive toxins from the body. 3. Increases elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin and improves blood circulation. 4. Refuels the body with healthy nutrients.

If there are no contraindications as to why you should not detox here are the symptoms that might arise: • Unexplained fatigue • Sluggish elimination (constipation) • Irritated skin • Allergies • Low-grade infections • Puffy eye or bags under the eyes • Bloating • Menstrual problems • Mental confusion

This list is not limited but these would be the most prevalent.

Types of detoxes available and what’s best for you?

On the market today there are many detoxes available. The most common one lately is the all liquid cleanse – cold press juicing. Another kind of detox is a combination of liquid supplements like juices and eating a selection of food items while abstaining from others. There are also programs that involve fasting on liquids for around two to four days before being followed by a carefully planned detox diet to allow the digestive system to rest. This basically involves consuming whole

fresh foods that have been not been modified, and a reduction in caffeinated product such as teas and coffee. The type of detoxes also vary depending on the longevity of the cleanse or fasting. Many programs follow a seven-day schedule, but it’s not always necessary. It depends on how toxic you feel. It does take the body time to clean the blood, so ensure you maintain a healthy diet thereafter to continue the cleanse. When choosing the right detox plan for you consider your personal toxicity level, the intensitiy of the cleanse as well as duration.

Think you can hack it on your own? Here’s a quick one-day weekend detox plan to start you off and for those times you feel puffy as the clouds (and not in a cute way):

Lemon Water Mixture 2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice 8 ounces of water 1 tablespoon maple syrup a dash or two of cayenne pepper • Start eating light at least 12 hours before commencing your cleanse. • Alternate drinking the lemon water mixture with natural fresh juices every 2 hours. • Don’t consume any solids until the morning after. • If you’re buying juice from the store make sure it’s unsweetened and organic. This type of cleanse is all about flushing out impurities and jump starting the balancing of your body’s system so do anticipate needing to go to the bathroom more often than usual.

Note: Consult a physician when you have a medical condition before engaging in a detox plan of any kind.

DESTINATION RIYADH 71

What about exercise while detoxing?

With any dramatic change in diet or exercise the body will go under stress. Too much stress is not always good. Therefore, I suggest while detoxing that exercise be kept gentle, such as leisurely aerobic work like walking, light jogging, swimming, pilates and yoga. This is not the time to hit an intense workout. Bear in mind your energy levels may be lowered as there will be a reduction in calories as well. to regain balance and from there continue on a path that encourages a balanced healthy diet.

While detoxing you can do gentle exercising, leisurely aerobic work like walking, light jogging, swimming, Pilates and yoga.

What to expect from the detox?

When you detox the whole point is to feel fresh, cleaner and alert if followed correctly.

Short-term changes you may feel after detoxing: Good

bad

Less water retention which will show weight loss

More frequent bowel movements (not so good)

Less Bloating

Change in sleep patterns

Brighter Eyes

Headaches

More Alert

Life after a detox

For many that have detoxed and spent a week regaining balance they should feel great, but they often return to their old ways. Which means within another few months they feel the need to do it again.

Personally I think continual detoxing is a remedy for damaging your metabolism and relationship with food. It is almost like yoyo dieting, which in the long run does not work. What is proven is a long term solution, healthy, balanced and consistency.

A Trip To Historic Saudi A 'Arif Citadel

By Jala Mohamed

The A'Arif Citadel is one of the oldest historic landmarks in Ha'il in northwestern Saudi Arabia. The Al Ali family built it at the beginning of the 18th century to guard the city from potential attacks. The A'Arif Citadel is built in a rectangular shape, 40 meters long and 11 meters wide. It used to have openings all around it that were used by soldiers to keep a watchful eye for approaching intruders. It also had prayer areas, toilets, warehouses and other facilities that enabled citizens to stay for long periods of time. Later on, the citadel was used for Ramadan’s moon sighting and for firing the iftar (Ramadan breakfast) gun. This dramatic change transformed the citadel from a place designed for war to a spiritual place. Today the A'Arif Citadel is a landmark visited by tourists from all around the world.
