Happy New Year 2011, this New Year calls for a new look at Destination Jeddah! As we celebrate our 24th issue, I think back to our humble beginnings two years ago, and I’m amazed at how quickly time has passed by during which we’ve enlightened and provided our readers with the best Jeddah has to offer. We hope you’ve enjoyed the ride as much as we have. I’m excited to introduce fresh new sections in DJ which include book reviews, a TV Guide, and new layouts to accompany several of our favorite featured columns. I would also like to introduce our young and talented stylist Hassnah, who will be pointing out the current trends of the Jeddah shopping scene. Of-course we’ll still continue to provide restaurant reviews, up-to-date events and news on the continuous growth of Jeddah, so make sure you don’t miss a single issue of DJ. I’d like to also take this chance to announce that the beta version of the new DJ website has been launched, to give you full access to our past issues and you can keep you in the loop with Jeddah’s developments no matter where you are around the world. We’re only as strong as our readership, hence I do encourage each of you to participate in future issues by sending us your feedback, comments, and suggestions. The more input we have from our readers, the more we can improve and excel in providing the best content and information possible.

Just Basic Black & White? Ladies, have you ever wanted to buy an abaya, but been bewildered by the styles and different components? Gentleman, have you ever wondered about the ubiquitous thobe and what you’re supposed to wear underneath it? DJ boldly goes to the heart of these common concerns – look no further for all your questions are answered right here.

The Bump

Tarha (Scarf)

The tarha comes in many different variations of color, length, and decoration. Used to cover the hair and in some cases, the face. While many Saudi women simply wrap it around their head to cover their hair, the niqab is a face veil that is worn over the tarha and has a rectangular eye slit. The burqu, A similar to the niqab, has a vertical strip of CI VI LS fabric between the eyes which connects the OC IE the bottom sections together. top and TY

Reader’s Feedback

The bump definitely deserves its own section! This style consists of putting your hair into a high bun (or using a hair piece to enhance your tresses) and wrapping the tarha lightly so that it’s raised by the bun, affording a taller silhouette to your outfit.

To Ms. Enas Hashani “Destination Jeddah” is one of the popular magazines the youth just love to have since it has all they need and it is up to date. The groups we featured in our December issues are all social and civil activists, they are individuals who work selflessly to better our society, most of these groups have a Facebook pages and they were listed at the end of their feature in DJ. We also have a list at the end of the magazine in the General directory section for the official charities in the city, you can find it under Social Service Organizations.

Dear Enas... I was in Jeddah last week and saw your lovely magazine. It attracted my attention with its style, rich info yet casual. I always dreamed of such city insights and activities updates. We need such sparks in our cities and societies. My question, do you plan for a similar one for the Eastern Providence, Dammam ? If not, pls do. Good luck and keep up the good work. Thank you, Asmaa Addas Dear Asmaa, Thank you very much for you comments, regarding the “The Bump” if you have noticed the article was part of the Settling In section, this section is directed to newcomers and visitors to the city to educate them about the different aspects of life and culture that they might encounter when they arrive to the Kingdom, it was by no means promoting the Bump, we were simply explaining to our readers what it is. We at Destination Jeddah strive to inform our readers and trust that they will decide for themselves how to use the information provided within our pages. Again we thank you, we value your comment and we will publish it. Best regards Enas Hashanah EIC Destination Jeddah Please send to feedback@destinationjeddah.com

DJ Suggests:

Social Responsibility Starting With You Jeddah has been swept up in activism and social campaigns lately and it’s been wonderful to experience. However, next time you consider changing your profile picture on Facebook in support of Darfur or forwarding a BBM about the plight of Burmese orphans, keep in mind that charity begins at home. Rather than following the trend or doing the absolute minimum, DJ suggests seizing the moment and doing your part! How about next time you witness someone

littering, you politely ask them to dispose of it properly? Even better, why not not pick it up yourself and set an example for onlookers. The next time you’re in a situation where you can actually do something to right a wrong, no matter how seemingly trivial, go for it rather than depending on others to do it. Social responsibility doesn’t need an audience, it just needs one person willing to go out of their way to do the right thing.

Thumbs down to... Lax Garbage Collecting

Thumbs up to... Jeddah’s New

Anti-Littering Campaign

The signs are up – now it’s up to us to help beautify Jeddah. The Jeddah Municipality is trying to raise public awareness about littering by posting large banners all over town. Although the signs are predominantly in Arabic, the visual anti-littering picture is clear, no matter what language you speak. And the SR 150 fine is a good deterrent if you’re caught polluting the environment. Great to see these public campaigns in action! Encouraging local efforts to engage the population is a way to make all Jeddahwis proud of their city.

It is a sad but common sight to see the bright purple garbage bins of the Jeddah Municipality overflowing with trash...and moreover, surrounded by trash, tree debris, and foliage. These piles of trash can grow for days before the dumpsters are emptied - creating an unwanted eye-sore as well as distributing trash throughout our neighborhoods. While DJ commends the recent anti-littering campaigns, it doesn’t seem right that such an obvious problem has gone unaddressed. Those in charge of garbage bin servicing should reexamine the collection schedules in order to address this issue - the residents of Jeddah thank you in advance.

Savor The Settling In

Flavors of Jeddah

Moving to a new country is an adventure. The people, the scenery, the shopping, the language, the customs – it can seem overwhelming at times, but eventually you settle down and realize that the most important thing on your mind is…food! Either you’re enjoying all the new tastes or you’re desperately missing the familiar flavors of home, food can be the make or break element in your future happiness. DJ wants to help you settle in with the following food pointers. Forget about your iqama issues, your housing search, and your job transition while you savor the flavors of the Middle East. Jeddah is a gourmand’s delight if you know where to go.

· International Cuisine

No matter what country you call home, sometimes there’s nothing better than a juicy steak or a slice of greasy pizza to satisfy your hunger. Vegetarians searching for the ultimate salad won’t be disappointed with the variety of colorful, adventurous dishes on offer either. All these choices and more are easily found in the leading malls in Jeddah, as well as the numerous eating establishments in Rawdah, Tahlia St, and Andalus St. From the high-end hotel restaurants to the numerous international fast-food chains – Jeddahwis enjoy an enormous selection of different cuisines. 8

DESTINATION JEDDAH

· Middle Eastern Cuisine

Since you are living in the Middle East, don’t hesitate to sample the delicious local cuisine. From classic Lebanese to simple Yemeni to authentic Saudi dishes – the variety of restaurants in Jeddah will have you eating out at a different spot for at least a year. The ubiquitous shwarma accompanied by freshly squeezed fruit juice is the most popular snack for many residents, but don’t overlook the utterly mouth-watering ‘fatayer’ or local version of pizza. Nothing beats freshly baked dough encasing melting cheese – delicious!

· Desserts

The sinfully sweet dessert category deserves a mention of its own. From Lenotre’s upscale French pastries to Saadiddin’s crisp baklawa to Kunafa House’s unbeatable cheesecake kunafa and the delightfully creamy jubneyah from Goodies – it’s easy to forget your diet vows when faced with the amazing desserts all over town. For a taste of paradise, don’t miss the freshly fried, hot jelebis on the streets of Aziziyah. Of course the wide availability of exotic fresh fruits is enough to satisfy your sweet cravings too. Pakistani mangos, Thai rambutans, American strawberries, and Jordanian figs/apricots – it’s all here for the picking. The health conscious can also indulge in an astonishing variety of nuts and dried fruits – Al Rifai is a one-stop shop for excellent nut mixes (plus their nougat is to die-for!)

· Food Faux-Pas

• Most coffee shops use long life milk- if that is an issue for you, be sure to ask them to show you the milk box as they usually can’t tell the difference. • When ordering juice, be sure to be clear about “1 cup” v.s. “1 Gallon”. They’ll usually ask, but pay attention in case they don’t. • No one orders baklawa by the piece…so be brave & go for a ½kg selection. • The main grocery stores will shell your shrimp while you shop – hurray! • Loose fruits/vegetables must be weighed & priced BEFORE you get to the check-out. • Saudis like to eat a late dinner, usually AFTER 9pm, so you’ll be alone in a restaurant if you show up at 6pm for a dinner party.

Do you have a ‘Settling In’ adventure to share with our readers? Help newcomers avoid the faux-pas you may have made as they adjust to life in Jeddah. Language barriers, rules of the road, cultural missteps...they’re all funny in retrospect. Send in your tales to DJ and we’ll republish them here in an upcoming issue. December 2010:

Speak Out and Speak Loud!

December has been an extraordinary month in terms of the events that Jeddah has hosted. From celebrating female entrepreneurship to social media in learning, there has been a convention for every type of enterprising and active resident of Jeddah; here’s a brief summary for those who couldn’t attend each gathering:

Kingdom Women In Leadership Forum (WIL) December 7th - 8th, 2010 This extraordinary event held in the beautifully appointed Park Hyatt was truly an inspiring two days for female entrepreneurs in the Kingdom. Marketed as an event for “knowledge sharing, partnership opportunities, dynamic networking and opportunities”, the WIL Forum became a platform for some of the most influential females in the Kingdom to share their experiences. Saudi racecar champion Alqassim Hamidaddin made history again by getting two trophies in two races (2nd and 3rd rank) with a best lap record of 1 min 18 seconds at the Chevrolet Middle East Super Car Championship held at the Bahrain F1 International Circuit. In the face of aggressive driving by the French champion Christopher, Alqassim succeeded in skillfully securing 2nd place by maneuvering through the crowded curves. The competition in the 2nd race was again between the Christopher and Alqassim – for over 20 laps they raced neck to neck. The race concluded with Christopher hitting Alqassim’s rear left wheel, causing considerable damage, but Alqassim’s determination won him 3rd place in this close race. After the race, the Saudi champion has declared, “This is a good start of this season, and I promise to continue raising up the Saudi flag in every single event.” Mr. Ahmed Al-Shargawi, Team Q Racing Manager, said, “Alqassim is a brave driver to continue such tough aggressive racing with damage to his car. A Wadi of Foxes

This is a story about a couple of South Africans, a fox, and a wadi (dry riverbed) in Jeddah. We first encountered our fox during one of our frequent rambles through a wadi in our neighborhood. Her sudden appearance surprises us as we never actually observed her entering or exiting her den, but she must have come to recognize our scent as she would then sniff around the ground if we happened to sit down. We started playing a mobile ring tone whenever 22 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Text & Photography by Ian & Caryl Mackintosh

she was with us - she obviously came to identify the sound with us as she would seem to ‘magically’ appear whenever we next approached her area. Caryl named our fox “Bambi” because of the way she looked when lying curled up with her back towards us...she looked so very small and cute and cuddly with her big Bambi deer-like ears. Of course the difference was when she turned round and opened her mouth. Well, that was no Bambi!

The Sand Fox or Ruppell’s Fox can be found in most areas of Saudi Arabia, (except the Empty Quarter), the desert and semidesert areas of North Africa, and most of the Arabian Peninsula. It’s actually a tiny creature, not much bigger than a cat in overall body size, but with much longer legs and an extremely long tail. Its natural camouflage coloring allows it to totally blend in with its desert surroundings - the only give away to its presence is usually a blur of movement or the flick of its white tail as it moves away from you. Apart from the white flash at the end of the Sand Fox’s tail, the other visible identifier is its ears, which move about on its head rather like radar dishes and can be quite amusing. It is these ears that you will probably spot at night if the fox is sitting on a high place watching you. However they tend to keep off the high points, preferring to move just below

the ridge-line so as not to be silhouetted. Their feline grace is exhibited when they are in movement - they simply flow along the ground in a beautifully breath-taking manner. One of our biggest surprises while observing Bambi over an 11 month period was the great number of facial expressions she showed, especially around her eyes. They would range from calm observation to truly wild glares. Another noticeable trait was her ‘body language’. On one occasion while sitting and photographing Bambi, some strangers approached nearby. Bambi actually stood up and simply glared at them, with her tail just beginning to curl and her ears going a little back on her head. Clearly a gentle warning that she was not prepared to have them near us – we actually felt rather pleased to be accepted into her ‘fox’ family.

DESTINATION JEDDAH 23

Our friendship with Bambi unfortunately came to a sad end. Workers from a nearby construction site accidentally dumped sand into the wadi, inadvertently burying Bambi’s den. Sadly, one of the most habitable wadis was destroyed, along with the lives of many other animals such as hedgehogs, lizards, and snakes. We hope that in sharing our story with you, you will realize how special relationships, such as ours with little Bambi, could potentially be all around you...all you have to do is keep your eyes open for the wonders of the flora and fauna in KSA.

One of the youngest DJ’s to hit the music scene in the Middle East, Omar Basaad is a shooting star with a dedicated, worldwide fan base. Proving that musicians are truly born with the beat in their blood, Omar weaves together a magical mix of musical styles which result in his popular and unique remixes. His success on the live DJ circuit is also a testament to his ability to fuse Western influences with his Arab roots to supply the audience with an irresistible dance beat.

26 DESTINATION JEDDAH

1) What’s your favorite song/artist? “There is a lot of good music out there, but lately I am loving ‘Barbra Streisand’ by Duck Sauce, this song just sticks in your mind. My favorite artist is Steve Angello, although I get influenced by Timbaland, Kanye & Daft Punk.” 2) How do you come up with your playlists?

Cover for Omar’s New Single. Omar picked up a guitar when he was 12, and music quickly became his passion. Typical of most teenagers, this budding DJ became obsessed with music, especially fascinated at how music impacted mood and the mechanics behind music production. At 17, he experimented on his first beat maker, learnt the keyboard, and mastered the intricacies of becoming a DJ. From there he landed numerous sessions at clubs across Turkey, where he was pursuing a degree in sound engineering. This lead to his big break, when he was asked to produce a track for famous Turkish pop star Tarkan, working alongside international producers such as Tiesto. Omar now spends his time between Jeddah and Dubai, where he produces music and hosts a radio show on Panorama FM playing to an audience spanning across the Middle East.

“Well, it depends on the venue – where, when, what kind of event. I always brainstorm before the event and have many different cuts in the song and edit some of them, sometimes I’ll have 2 songs already mixed together so when I play it live, I’ll be able to mash up 2-3 more songs over them, so it’s like 5 songs play at once.” 3) Where can Jeddahwis hear you? They can always hear me live on Panorama FM Sunday-Thursday from 9-10pm, plus I do some private events in Jeddah. 4) Anything else you’d like to share with our readers? “I’ve been producing a lot of new songs lately and I want to show everybody that I am a good producer and that I enjoy what I’m doing. I’m releasing a new single on ITUNES worldwide this January featuring a cover by a Saudi artist. Huda Beydoun, she is one of the most talented young artists in Saudi, so yeah, it’s all green, all Saudi.” 5) Any advice for aspiring DJs? How much basic equipment is required to get started? “The technology is making it much easier to DJ, and you hear everyone in the hood is a DJ! But that doesn’t mean you stop working hard and learning it the right way… you should take it to the next level. It’s getting your own production plus mixing and creating new grooves while playing live... to be different out there.” DESTINATION JEDDAH 27

This studded wallet caught my eye recently; the contrast between the classically shaped leather and the edgy severity of the gold studwork creates a subtle and unexpected elegance.

Skinny jeans have been a major fashion trend over the past few years and despite a few bellbottom near-misses they have thankfully remained strong. I cannot live without my Jamie jeans from Topshop and was delighted to discover that their perfect cut and surprising durability put most of my pricey designer denims to shame.

I personally adore grey nail polish and was excited to see that grey was a runway favorite this season. Yves Saint Laurent’s ‘Stormy Grey’ is a lovely literal take on the trend, as is Essie’s ‘Mink Muffs’, a subtle grey with beige undertones that will warm up your everyday look. For the more daring ladies out there, the much talked about ‘Black Pearl’ by Chanel is the ultimate hue of the season.

I am happy to announce that the 50’s and 60’s are set to reign supreme this season and from extreme retro shapes to subtle cat eye styles an on trend pair of shades are an effortless way to stay fabulously on trend in 2011. If you have a round face you will find that a larger frame and sharper lines will create a beautiful contrast. For those with a more angular face the rounded cat eye frame works particularly well. Whatever your choice, you will find that the right pair of retro sunglasses are a worthwhile investment adding a perfect vintage hint to many an outfit.

GAME REVIEW Angry Birds The next time somebody asks me why I love gaming on an iPhone, I am going to show them Angry Birds. For the sale price of just 99 cents (it’s normally $1.99 – and still worth every penny), you get a funny little puzzler about flightless birds that attack egg-stealing pigs via a slingshot. The pigs hide in wooden, metal, and glass houses. Your power and trajectory determines the success of your birds’ attacks. A direct hit at a critical weak point can bring an entire structure down on top of a pig’s noggin, resulting in lots of pained oinks. Angry Birds outstrips that addictive puzzler in personality.

Al-Ahlam:

The Authority on Red Sea Adventures Jeddah . Al Lith . Jizan . Yanbu

“Life abounds in bank after bank of exuberant coral structures, second only to those of the Great Barrier Reef in extent and exceeding it perhaps in splendor.” These are the legendary words of famed oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau when he visited the Red Sea coast. Let Al-Ahlam Marine Tourism Group introduce you to the wonders of the Red Sea through their extensive marine operations head-quartered in Jeddah. They are the largest and most diversified dive operators in the Middle East, as well as full service marina operators. Follow in Costeau’s footsteps and visit AlLith Dive Village in the Farsan Banks; it is one of the most beautiful and unique dive bases in the Red Sea. Located 180 km south of Jeddah, Al-Lith is the starting point for one of the world’s last diving frontiers and a wonderful place for fishing and observing sea life, particularly sharks and sea-turtles. This island getaway is perfect for a weekend trip or an extended marine adventure. Al-

Lith acts as a port to the Farasan Banks, an archipelago of islands where Al-Ahlam Tourism Group is also planning a future dive site on Jizan. In addition to recreational diving, AlAhlam works with the Royal Saudi Navy to instruct groups of trainees in Rescue & Safety Diving. They also train employees of the Department of Civil Defense as well as other government agencies, ensuring that skilled dive/marine experts will be available across a spectrum of KSA’s agencies. As the first local organization specializing in sea navigation and sea rescue, Al-Ahlam is a holder of the international quality certificate from the Bureau Veritas (ISO 2009-9001) and has accomplished their goal of becoming the pioneer in KSA’s marinebased tourism.

Al-Ahlam Marine Tourism Group continues to expand; they recently signed an agreement with Emaar E.C. to build and operate a 23,000 sq. mtr. yacht club in the Bay La Sun Village in King Abdullah Economic City. Another existing option for those who prefer above-water experiences is their floating restaurant which seats over 240 people. With an extensive menu, luxurious on-board amenities which include professional medical services for emergencies, and stunning views of the Jeddah coastline, the dinner cruise remains a popular option for residents and visitors to the Kingdom. The professionals at Al-Ahlam Marine Tourism Group cater to dive enthusiasts and nature lovers alike – don’t miss experiencing the wonders of the Red Sea with their enthusiastic guidance. Their marine expertise combined with their extensive local knowledge is a guarantee of quality service unmatched by their competitors. Saudi International Boat Show: Come Rain or Come Shine Although the first two weeks of December brought overcast clouds and light showers to Jeddah, the inclement weather did not overshadow the flash and lights of the Saudi International Boat Show 2010. The glamourous event was organized by the Dubai World Trade Center (WTC), endorsed by the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities, and venue managed by Al-Ahlam Marine Tourism Group. This was the second occurence of the Boat Show with over 37,000 avid boating enthusiasts in attendance. Among the participating local and international brands and manufacturers were Al-Ahlam Marine Tourism Group, Al-Khorayef Commercial Co. Ltd., ART Marine LLC, Blue Limits, Chehab Marine, Garmin, KB Marine, Mega Marine, Princess Yachts, Westport and many more.

Although the second day of the show was cut short dut to the stormy weather, the Boat Show delighted participants with its comprehensive exhibition of everything nautical. The event is expected to be conducted on a greater scale in the future, in the hopes of contributing to the Kingdom’s tourism industry. Prince Sultan Bin Salman, President of the Saudi Commission for Tourism and Antiquities expressed his future vision for the boat show, “We also hope to make it a national [event] as well, in that it will provide a platform for local tourism by attracting public from abroad. Marine tourism in the kingdom is a treasure trove we need to invest [in], so we will be launching a range of maritime tourism projects soon.” 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The four day event attracted boating enthusiasts from throughout the region, both locally and globally. Regional dealers and distributors brought top-of-the-range models from the world’s leading boat manufacturers in the largest display of super yachts, leisure crafts, fishing boats, power and sailing boats in the Kingdom. Boating fans agreed that the variety and selection of products on offer surpassed industry standards for boat shows internationally.

Fine Dining Jeddah Style:

The Best of the Best

By Dina Ismail

When you’re planning your next fine dining evening to honor that special person, a birthday celebration, or landing a new job, Jeddah boasts some amazing restaurants of international caliber at which to enjoy your upcoming celebrations. Spanning the spectrum from Lebanese to Chinese to French; this month, DJ brings you the best of Jeddah’s fine dining establishments. So whether it’s a special occasion or just an excuse to treat yourself after a long week, the following restaurants all promise to tantalize your taste buds and provide you with a luxurious dining experience.

Toki

Qasr Al-Sharq

Location: Malek Rd. (Leylaty Compound) Tel: +966-2-6681080

Location: North Corniche Rd. Tel: +966-2-6599999

Often referred to as “the best Chinese in Jeddah”, Toki is the place to see and to be seen. Part of the high-end Leylaty group of restaurants, Toki opened in 2002 as an elegant alternative to the many casual Chinese and Japanese restaurants already available in Jeddah. Their gorgeous interior and generally flawless service are complimented by their delicious food. The Peking duck and soufflé in particular are not to be missed. Reserve a visit to Toki for those special occasions as their prices match the high quality of their food and service. However, no self-respecting Jeddah foodie has not dined at least once at Toki – possibly Jeddah’s first and most famous high-end eatery.

The beautiful Qasr Al Sharq hotel, part of the Waldorf-Astoria collection next to the Jeddah Hilton, also provides luxury restaurants which are high on any Jeddahwi’s list of fine dining restaurants. Mataam Al-Sharq is Middle Eastern cuisine like you’ve never had it before; “a gastronomic journey of ancient tastes and bouquets of smells.” Al-Shurfa lounge is a “boutique café” offering light refreshments in a beautifully tranquil and opulent setting. The gleaming, gold-accented tableware accents the elegantly prepared, delicious regional delicacies. The overall experience is one of high-end glamour, a traditional Middle-Eastern setting which has been tastefully updated to suit modern style.

Mabu

La Cuisine

Location: Muhammad Ibn Abdul Al-Aziz St. Tel: +966-2-6604300

Location: Palestine St. Tel: +966-2-6630363

A relative newcomer to Jeddah’s fine dining scene, Mabu has quickly secured a place as one of those restaurants offering quality international cuisine in a charming, elegant atmosphere. Their fusion menu includes Japanese, French, Italian, and American selections all prepared to a high standard, beautifully presented by attentive waiters. The modern interior is trendy, yet soothing with soft music and hidden alcoves offering plenty of private dining options – this is the place for a special night out.

For those in the know, La Cuisine is the be-all and end-all of French cuisine in Jeddah. The authentic French feel of this restaurant is immediately obvious, from its tasteful décor to its luxuriously presented food. The crème brulee, cordon bleu, and escargots (yes, snails in Jeddah!) are not to be missed. For all those Francophiles in Jeddah, try La Cuisine for an authentic taste of everything French.

Ginza I Chome

Japanese food lovers will be in sushi heaven at the Rosewood Corniche’s Ginza restaurant. Elegant modern decor with wood and natural stone accents add to the Zen-like ambience, while no expense has been spared when it comes to the food. Delicious cooked dishes which reflect impeccable culinary expertise are paired alongside a wide selection of raw dishes - there is something to suit even the least adventurous palate. Their novel ‘Omakase’ approach where you place yourself in the talented hands of their chefs will result in a unique, one-of-a-kind dining experience. Location: Rosewood Corniche Tel: +966-2-2578888

Bubbles & Byblos

Al-Multaqa

Location: Al-Hamra Dist. Tel: +966-2-6697655

Location: Malek Rd. (Leylaty Compound) Tel: +966-2-6066666

Two more favorites from the Leylaty Group, Bubbles opened in 2005 to great fanfare. A favorite for both Jeddah families and the younger crowd, Bubbles offers a selection of American, Italian, Middle-Eastern, and French food. One of the few higher-end dining spots where customers can enjoy shisha, Bubbles is a beautifully decorated location that really does deserve its well-earned reputation. Don’t miss out on the shrimp kunafa on your next visit! Equally popular amongst business people and those searching for quality Lebanese cuisine in a classy environment, Byblos delivers delicious food, attentive service, and wonderful ambience. Their Jellab (rose-flavored, date juice) pairs well with the extensive variety of excellent food on offer.

For anyone who’s ever attended a wedding at the Leylaty ballrooms, you know how devastatingly delicious the food can be. Now your ticket to a delicious meal doesn’t have to come attached with a wedding invitation! Al-Multaqa provides diners with possibly the best selection of buffets in Jeddah. Everything from lobster and creamy pastas to chocolate mousse and fruit tarts is available and utterly delectable. A sumptuous interior, flawless service, and the presence of a talented pianist, when available, all add to the decadent experience of dining at Al-Multaqa.

flapjacks Jeddah’s Eclectic Answer to IHOP

Located in the trendy Rawdah Star Plaza just off Rawdah St, Flapjacks’ intriguing exterior provides an inviting backdrop which raises expectations of a very rewarding culinary experience to come. These feelings are reinforced by a cozy and colorful interior surrounded by bright murals. A strong scent of sheesha pervades the restaurant; despite its comfort food title, this is more of a young hangout. The banquette seating is comfortable, large tables with builtin menus and copies of the latest DJ are freely available. However, as no pictures or descriptions of dishes are available, ordering is something of a gamble which forces you to rely upon the descriptive skills of the server. The breakfast combination of Eggs Floriantina with fresh OJ and cup of tea/coffee is clearly the best deal at SR31. Savoury flapjacks ranged from SR26 –SR39. With choices such as the Shrimp Special and the Chicken Curry Pancake, there’s something for everyone, although most of the savory pancakes benefit from extra sauce, which is available upon request. For dessert, try the traditional Jack Pancake, which was served with maple syrup, a dash of butter and whipped cream. Although the quality and consistency of the batter needs to be improved, overall the experience is a fun, uniquely novel one. New combination menus will soon be available on ‘Family Friendly Thursdays’ when no sheesha will be offered. They are also introducing a new range of sandwiches (priced betweenSR28-SR45) including BLT, Club, Mom’s Steak, Quesadillas and Pizza Cake which will widen Flapjacks’ appeal. It’s difficult not to be satisfied at Flapjacks since it offers so much choice to its wide audience, however, with a bit of tweaking of ingredients and presentation, it could easily become so much more enjoyable and fulfill its true potential. Salads With Style:

Salad Boutique comes to Jeddah! By Dina Ismail Photo By Silwan Eshki

Salad Boutique, a concept from Kuwait’s restaurant scene, is one Jeddah’s fresh arrivals this month and is already causing quite a stir. From the restaurant’s lovely seaside location on Corniche, to the opulent purple and cream decor to finally, one of the most unique concepts to grace Jeddah, Salad Boutique should definitely be on the radar of any self-respecting Jeddah foodie.

The Concept

The brainchild of three young Kuwaiti entrepreneurs: Ghadeer Khajah, Laila Al-Kandrai, and Mohamed Qabzard, Salad Boutique launched in April of 2009 in Kuwait to resounding success. The idea of a healthconscious boutique eatery where generous portions of the freshest and most innovative salads were the main course definitely made 56 DESTINATION JEDDAH

P ROMOTION

waves in the restaurant scene and others in the region took notice. Brought to Jeddah by Eng. Mohamed Khawandanah, Salad Boutique is unique in that it is unlike any other restaurants and this is in no small part to its creators. “The most important of the experience at Salad Boutique is that the customer feels special,”

said the vivacious Al-Kandrai. “Whether we’re in Kuwait or Saudi Arabia, what matters to us that our quality and our brand are consistent no matter where the customer is . We set high standards for every aspect of the boutique - the identity, the decor, the ingredients, the menu - everything. And the end result is that we absolutely love what we did.” There is very little not to love about this quirky restaurant, which is sure to resonate with Jeddah food-lovers. Ladies who lunch will love the sophisticated atmosphere, the iPad menus, the customizable salads. Business lunchers will appreciate the high quality of service, the intimate atmosphere, and the stunning views.

The Ambience

Everything from the spotless kitchens, charmingly elegant dining area to the outdoor seating are beautifully designed. Ghadeer Khajah was responsible for every little aspect of the decor, right down to it’s packaging. “I wanted it to be intimate and elegant,” said the smiling Khajah. All kinds of diners will fall in love with the cushy purple velvet couches, the twinkling chandeliers, and the soft creams and rich woods of the seating area. Salad Boutique has the distinction of having one of the few truly unique and trendy atmospheres among other Jeddah eateries, thanks to Khajah’s signature style and small but significant touches to the elegant boutique.

The Cuisine

Another unique aspect of Salad Boutique is the manner in which the food is presented. Upon being seated, diners are handed the ever elegant iPads, which function as the menu, which is quite comprehensive. Said Al-Kandrai of the unique menu style: “I really think it’s a beautiful way to experience our beautiful menu at a very high quality standard.” Diners are invited to peruse the vast arrays of salads (divided into Green, Pasta, Chicken, Beef, and Seafood) in addition to other offerings such as delectable sounding risottos, and mini burgers and sandwiches. International cuisine is well represented - with one little twist. Customers also have the option of selecting a salad from the ‘Salad Boutique By Me’. This section is made up of salads specially created by Salad Boutique customers. When a customer comes up with a innovative salad, they are invited to submit their ideas and after the head chef approves the recipe, diners can enjoy the delicious creations of other customers. With names like ‘Arso by Maryam’ and ‘Lovable Rocca by MJ’, diners can’t help but be charmed by this new way to interact with their food.

The Verdict

Salad Boutique really does seem the next star of the Jeddah restaurant scene. Diners will enjoy feeling that every meal at the restaurant is truly an experience on its own and the wonderful menu and cozy atmosphere is sure to bring back all salad-lovers (and otherwise!) for a return visit. Guests can see their order being cooked live on the televisions nestled amid eye-catching, stylized renderings of cherry blossoms on the walls. It takes a confident restaurant to open up their kitchen to the inquiring eyes of their customers, and Chopsticks doesn’t disappoint. This is your perfect place to take your best friend, everyone will enjoy this original Yemeni creation that offers an alternative traditional taste of chopped beef or chicken. The excellent sharwama, with its fatless crispy meat laying on a bed of fresh samooly bread soaks up the sauce, yet still stays crispy on top. Overall the taste and the texture are heavenly. An order of fresh juice perfectly complements the hot sandwich. Recipe

Katayef These mouth-watering little treats are mini-pancakes stuffed with cream, then deep-fried before they’re drenched in a sugar syrup. Traditionally served during Ramadan, they’re welcome anytime as they’re quick and easy to prepare. Best eaten hot, then followed by a strong cup of Arabic coffee!

Ingredients

1 can or 170 g of Nestle cream 2 cups milk 1/2 cup cornflour 1 tbsp rosewater 20 large slices of katayef readymade dough 2 cups frying oil 3 cups sugar syrup 2 tbsps ground pistachio

Preparation Method:

Mix Nestle cream with milk and cornflour in a pot. Heat while constantly stirring until the mix is brought to a boil and thickens. Add the rosewater and stir well. Put aside until cool. Stuff each slice of gatayif dough with one tablespoon of the Nestle cream mix after it has cooled down. Seal the slices and fry in preheated oil until golden brown. Remove using a slotted spoon to drain excess oil. Immediately dip in sugar syrup for a few minutes and then place in a sieve. Decorate katayef with ground pistachio.

Mystery Diner Asia Restaurant Nestled in a busy corner of Sari St in Rawdah, Asia Restaurant is a family-owned place which caters to people yearning for some authentic Thai/Asian food. Its clean, down-to-earth surroundings focus on service and food over fancy ambience – it’s a popular locale with the Asian population in Jeddah.

Iced Macaroons at Lenôtre Macaroons have the distinction of being what are possibly the trendiest pastry out there. For those who remain uninitiated to the world of pastry, a macaroon is a meringue-like, baked pastry made out of ground almonds and sometimes filled with ganache. Lenôtre have taken this chic dessert and put a unique spin on it with their iced macaroons. The dish comes in various flavors such as our favorites which are golden vanilla and strawberry macaroons arranged on a minimalist plate with an artful splash of raspberry syrup. This dessert is the perfect conclusion to a long day at the office or a wonderful way to kickstart your week-end. For those dreaming of Paris’ Ladurée, Lenôtre will satisfy your macaroon craving right here in Jeddah. Disclaimer: this divine desert will keep you coming back for more, so don’t say you weren’t warned. Teatro Mall - Tahlia st. Tel: +966-2-2611222

The varied menu features familiar Thai dishes which hit the spot, especially the Thai Fried Noodles with Shrimp, the Sauteed Fish Fillets with Basil Leaves, and the Spicy Grilled Catfish Salad with Mint Leaves. Affordable entrees are priced between SR15–SR45, while the tempting appetizers are only SR15-SR25. Our favorites include the Sizzling Beef Hot Plate and the Chicken with Spicy Green Curry. The minimal dessert menu leaves us searching for sweets elsewhere, but luckily the Kunafa House is just around the corner! With a bustling ‘take-out’ service, this place tends to be busy throughout the week, but the waiters are attentive and turn-over is brisk. Add Asia Restaurant to your list of cheap and cheerful dining spots when you’re not in the mood for a 5-star meal with its 5-star price…we’re always pleased to receive the budget-friendly bill. Royal Hospitality at

George V Paris

Located just off the Champs-Elysees, Four Seasons George V is a splendid blend of the grandeur of the past and magnificence of the present. This eight-storey landmark, which originally opened in 1928, offers 245 guest rooms and suites that are so spacious that they are considered to be the largest in Paris. At least 30 of these rooms offer a breathtaking view of the City of Romance through private balconies and terraces.

While the renovation work has restored the pristine glory of the original George V hotel, the 21st century amenities have been added for the luxury and comfort of the guests. The 13,000-squre-feet meeting space – the most extensive and luxurious of any five star hotels in Paris – preserves the original Normandy wood paneling and richly textured fabrics. Its cozy and private library known as Salon Anglais offers an intimate setting. Four Seasons gives royal treatment to its guests. In line with this tradition, George V Paris has the honor of commissioning the world’s only Hermes-inspired hand-built Rolls Royce Phantom custom-made to the hotel’s specifications for airport pick-up, day trips or business.

Private rooms

with a prestigious address

Its suites as well as deluxe and superior rooms are not only spacious but also offer home-like comfort where privacy is of prime importance. This is exactly what owner Joel Hillman wanted when he asked his advisers to eliminate the word ‘hotel’ from George V. The objective was to offer private rooms with a prestigious address. The guest rooms and suites display Parisian flair together with a range of modern amenities and services, and are equipped with three dualline speakerphones, voice mail and high-speed Internet access, LCD color display panels, side projectors, multi-image dissolve units, mixers, CD players to list just a few.

Haute

cuisine

A variety of fine cuisine is available at four dining venues here. Besides, in-room dining service, the hotel offers traditional French cuisine in its Le Cinq restaurant, which has been awarded two prestigious Michelin stars. The Le Cinq menu changes with each season to highlight seasonal products. Guests can also enjoy eating “a la carte.” You can enjoy your food in the garden courtyard or amongst the Flemish tapestries in La Galerie.

Relax and

rejuvenate

The 850-square-meter spa is the best retreat for guests after a hectic day of business or sightseeing. Its 11 treatment rooms, including one for couples, a 9x6m pool, saunas, steam baths, two hairstyling rooms, and those for makeup, manicure and pedicure, as well as a relaxation room, fitness areas and a juice bar cater to each guests needs. Celebrated skincare brand L. Raphel is also making its French debut in March at the multi-award winning spa, which also offers Sodashi’s new Samadara Ultimate Age-Defying Facial. The spa has also created a beauty package using gold in all different forms in its two-hour-long “24 Karat Treatment.”

By Dilara Hafiz

“We are Spanish, we are all Spanish – even though I am a Muslim, I have many Jewish and Christian friends.” Leyla, the elegant proprietress of the Dar Ziryab teteria, an Arab-style teahouse, is most emphatic in sharing her experience of a peaceful life spent in Granada, Spain. Although her ancestors are Spanish going back for eight generations, her dark hair and almond-shaped eyes whisper of her original Berber/ North African roots. The teteria’s delicate lattice-work stone arches atop slim marble columns are reminiscent of the intricate stone artistry to be found in the breath-taking Alhambra which looms above the Avenue Calderia Nueva of Granada’s Albacion or Arab district.

72 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Built in 1236 by Ibn Ahmar, founder of the Nasrid dynasty, the famous ‘Red Fort’ or Alhambra is often referred to as a ‘memory palace’ for it remains one of the most enduring legacies of the 800-year Muslim rule of Andalusia, Spain. In The Ornament of the World: How Muslims, Jews, and Christians Created a Culture of Tolerance in Medieval Spain by Maria Roza Menocal, 13th century Granada is described as ‘one of the Shangri-Las of the West’. Dr. Menocal, a professor at Yale University, describes the fruitful intermingling that these three Abrahamic faiths enjoyed during the centuries of largely peaceful interaction in southern Spain. Vestiges of this coexistence can be seen everywhere in present-day Granada. Tourist shops sell T-shirts emblazoned with Arabic calligraphy next to colorful, hand-painted ceramic platters with a prominent Star of David motif in their centers. Crucifixes hang from every wall and glass rosaries as well as tasbihs can be found decorating the entranceways of these Aladdin-style shops. Visitors to the Alhambra are given a glimpse of a bygone age when the economic, political, and social interactions of the ruling class emphasized tolerance and peaceful coexistence for the greater good of the entire citizenry, be they Muslim, Christian, or Jew. However, between the 13th and 15th centuries, the Islamic Empire saw Toledo, Cordoba, Seville, and then finally Granada, fall under Christian rule. Weakened by in-fighting and a lavish life-style, the Muslim rulers bowed to the inevitable and retreated from Spain to North Africa and the Middle East. The Spanish Inquisition sought to eradicate all trace of Arabic and the legacy of the Muslims from the continent, but a visitor to Andalusia will

not be surprised to see evidence of countless Muslim artisans remaining in the key-hole, arched doorways, minarets now being used as bell-towers, and Arabic calligraphy decorating window-frames. Scholars look back to the Muslim reign in Spain as a Golden Age during which the Islamic civilization reached its zenith. The intellectual achievement of translating the Greeks’ storehouse of knowledge of philosophy, medicine, and statesmanship into Arabic for further study, advancement and eventual translation into Latin, French, Spanish, and English provided the intellectual spark which jump-started the European Renaissance. In Dr. Menocal’s words, “Even when political and ideological circumstances are characterized by strife, artistic and intellectual life prospers and reinvents itself in spaces created by cultural tolerance.” American Muslims visiting Granada are captivated by their surroundings. They muse aloud, “Our Spanish books in school mentioned the Alhambra of Granada, the Mezquita of Cordoba, and the Alcazar of Seville, but the emphasis was on their importance as Spanish monuments, not as examples of jewels in the crown of the Islamic empire. We wish more Muslims knew about this rich heritage!” In a far corner of the last room of the Alhambra Museum, there hangs an exquisitely carved, metal lamp. The lamp’s delicate bell-shape reveals its original use as a bell that once chimed in a church in Granada. Subsequent Muslim artisans adapted the discarded bell into a delicate vessel from which light once poured thru the intricate cut-outs onto worshippers streaming into a mosque for their evening prayers. Although the light has long been extinguished, who is to say that it will not be rekindled in another corner of the world? DESTINATION JEDDAH 73

Green Deen: What Islam Teaches about Protecting the Planet

Ibrahim Abdul-Matin, author of “Green Deen: What Islam Teaches about Protecting the Planet,” uses narratives, research, and scripture to show a long standing connection between Islam and active environmentalism. In his book, Abdul-Matin creates a step by step guide for American Muslims looking to green their everyday lives. He emphasizes that living a “Green Deen means understanding that God created us directly from the Earth and that we must do all that we can to take care of it, protect it, and manage all of its bounty in a sustainable way” . “Green Deen: What Islam Teaches about Protecting the Planet” is a great read for anyone looking to incorporate “Green Living” into their religious and spiritual outlook of the world. 76 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Mystic Fountains

Easy on the eyes, easy on the ears, fountains have been an integral and magical part of gardens for over a thousand years. They became a cornerstone of Islamic architecture, and Muslim architects slaved over the physics behind fountains to bring the magic one step further. Some of the more ingenious of these architects are the Persian Banu Musa brothers in the early 9th century. They devised a way to create fountains that continuously changed shape, as well as unique wind-powered fountains. Two millennia later, these mystic fountains still amaze us.

By Sea, By Air, By Land.. By Bicycle By Dilara Hafiz

“And proclaim the Pilgrimage among men: they will come to thee on foot and (mounted) on every kind of camel, lean on account of journeys through deep and distant mountain highways” 22:27 Qur’an translation by Yusuf Ali 78 DESTINATION JEDDAH

South Africa’s Nathim Cairncross, 28, and Imtiyaz Ahmad Haron, 25, completed an incredible Hajj journey. They traveled across 12 countries over 9 months…by bicycle! It was Haron’s idea to emulate the arduous journeys which pilgrims in the past used

to undertake – journeys which involved traveling by camel or horse or even foot, not by the jet planes most Hajjis take today. Although neither man is a professional cyclist, they trained their minds and bodies for this incredible journey which began on February 7, 2010 from Cape Town, South Africa. Averaging 80-100 km/day, they thoroughly enjoyed the adventures which each new day brought, from explaining about Hajj and Islam, as well as dealing with punctured tires and bicycle malfunctions. Some of the biggest challenges they faced included language barriers, hilly terrain, and muscle fatigue, but their determination and faith ensured their success. “On the ground you can speak to the people,” Cairncross said. “You get an opportunity that

traveling by plane or car you don’t get. And you learn much more, you discover much more about yourself. It was an existential experience. I think anyone who will do something like this will benefit tremendously, inshallah.” Both men agreed that the most memorable part of their journey was when they finally reached Makkah and entered the Haram for the first time. Their first glimpse of the Ka’aba will remain in their mind’s eye forever. Another special memory is the opportunity they had to complete their salah in the Masjid Nabawi in Medinah – a truly spiritual experience which every Muslim should try to have at least once in their lives. Schools Win For Awareness

By Serene Feteih

Just a couple of years ago, you wouldn’t find recycling bins in school hallways or classrooms. Children didn’t know what the word “recycle” meant…but things have changed. Many of Jeddah’s schools are now taking the lead in educating their students about the importance of “our environment.” Jeddah Knowledge School was one of the first schools to emphasize student awareness of a better world through recycling campaigns. JKS students have recycling bins distributed throughout the hallways, enjoy “Hat Day” using only reusable materials from home, and design their own pamphlets about the importance of saving water (and the best design gets printed and passed out to all the parents!) JKS succeeds in encouraging and boosting their students with confidence and responsibility to be the change they seek in their world. 82 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Other schools such as Dar Alfikr and My Little House have taken it a step further by adding an extra-curricular program within the school hours for students. “Our Environment, Our World” by Al-Nabta co-founders Sawsan Alim and Anwaar Abulkhair have created this program specifically designed for primary year students. By incorporating environmental issues into the curriculum, students naturally embrace care for their surroundings as part of the learning process.

ECO BOY STRIKES AGAIN By Serene Feteih

The Ambassadors School is in the process of structuring a program for their students at all levels involving the concept of “going green.” Some of the concepts that will be tackled are trash-free lunches, recycling and “turn it off”, all topics which children can incorporate into their daily lives. As Haifa Al-Sabbab, Ambassadors Supervisor, puts it, “We aspire to see a young generation being environmentally conscious.” Here are a few tips to get you started in your school: 1. Install recycling bins in classrooms or hallways. 2. Introduce the four R’s - Reduce,Reuse,Recycle,Rethink 3. Be water-wise. Report water leaks. 4. Organize a trash-free lunch day at school. It’s fun! 5. Collect paper scraps and left-over art materials for projects.

Following the debut of “The Amazing Adventures of Eco Boy”, Lana Sultan releases her second volume of the series. Volume 2 features the emergence of Bio Girl fighting side by side with Eco Boy against a villain named Bottlexo. The writing evolved into a rhyming style with catchy phrases to facilitate children to remember important facts. As part of her environmentally conscious agenda, Lana wanted to be the first Saudi to release her book as an Apple application to be run on iPhones, iPads, and touch iPods. The application is available on the iTunes Appstore and has a read alone option and a listening option. Lana also promises to have her first book released as an application in both Arabic and English before the end of 2010. Lana will kick off a series of reading and signing in the Khobar in the month of November before 3 confirmed readings in Jeddah in December. The Jeddah reading schedule is: Wednesday December 22, 2010 at “Little Book” starting at 6 pm

GREEN LIVING: A WAY OF LIFE.

Green living can be easily achieved in today’s world with ever-improving technology and a wealth of resources available to those who are interested.

Green Quote of the Month “We forget that the water cycle and the life cycle are one.” — Jacques Cousteau

This palm-sized pebble takes the guesswork out of water conservation by tracking how much water you use in your shower. Once you’ve programmed this pebble with your desired shower duration, it signals a yellow light at your half-shower mark and flashes red when it’s time to turn off the faucet. The real genius...this pebble incrementally shortens its suggested stop time, training you over weeks to use less water. Have fun with your timer by turning it into a clean game of race-against-the-pebble! To program your pebble, click the restart button on its base, then place it near your shower drain. It measures your water usage on the first try and flashes future finishing times against this benchmark, reducing suggested stop times by 5-7 seconds each shower. Available at: www.amazon.com

Drink Water Timing Matters Dr. Oz offers his opinion on the importance of drinking water at the correct time for maximum impact. Do your body a favor and supply the fluids it needs when it needs it. 2 glasses of water after waking up helps activate internal organs 1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal helps digestion 1 glass of water before taking a bath helps lower blood pressure 1 glass of water before going to bed avoids stroke or heart attack

Or is it? By Salma Al-Amoudi

While Jeddah, the Bride of the Sea, has long been associated with water, abundant fresh water is a surprisingly recent commodity. Until the 1970’s, fresh drinking water was limited and expensive. Although water availability has increased, the population of Jeddah has grown rapidly while water wastage has also been rising. This untenable situation implies rising water costs or even water shortages may lie in our city’s future. Since Jeddah does not have any water resources other than the sea, most residents depend on desalination plants to provide potable water, which has recently put a strain on water availability. Jeddah’s water problems range from misuse to incorrect disposal to sheer wastage, and often leave the environmentallyaware dumbfounded. So what can you do to decrease your water consumption easily and effortlessly?

1. While you may enjoy flexing your finger muscles, try to do it away from the faucet dials. Let the water flow only as much as you need, not at full blast, and when you’re not using it, turn the faucet off. 2. When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water. 3. Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month! 4. If you wash your car everyday, try to decrease the frequency to once a week. Granted, the air is full of sand, and you want your car to look slick and clean, but once a week will pull off the job just as well. 5. Shorten your shower by a minute or two, and you’ll save up to 150 gallons per month.

By Jenny McCarthy

Away from the lights of the world of celebrities, Jenny McCarthy is being a pure mother of a child with autism, one of the most puzzling disorders nowadays. The book tells the story of Evan starting with the first seizure he experienced. As a mother, Jenny tries in this book to document every strong feeling she had that was “louder than words”. She tells the story of a brave mom who has tried various types of intervention and who has been visiting different therapists to help her son; she also talks about family problems that she and Evan have encountered, including marital problems. What makes this book different from other books written by parents of children with disabilities is that Jenny McCarthy talks about how she could “heal” Evan’s autism. Is that possible? And how? Find it in this mother’s journey! Mothers of children with disabilities as well as mothers of typically developing children, psychologists, autism specialists and counselors are encouraged to read this book. If you spend 15 minutes of your time (before going to sleep for example, or work), you will finish this book in about a month. Fantastic, 30 days and you will broaden your knowledge with a totally new prospective for difficulties and life in general. Useful Arabic Words & Pronunciations

Arabic is the world’s 5th most commonly spoken language with almost 300 million native speakers. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and belongs to the Semitic group of languages. The three main classifications are: Classical Arabic, also known as the language of the Qur’an, Modern Standard Arabic, used in books, newspapers, and media, and Local dialects, which vary by country and region. Arabic words are constructed from threeletter “roots” which convey a basic idea. For example, k-t-b conveys the idea of writing. Addition of other letters before, between and after the root letters produces many associated words: not only “write” but also “book”, “office”, “library”, and “author”. The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 consonants and three vowels – a, i, u; it is written from right to left. Some of the glottal sounds are unique to Arabic. The Arabic words presented opposite reflect the Hijazi dialect.
