Reader’s Feedback We’re always happy to hear from you! Opinions, stories, comments, feedback and suggestions from our readers are what made DJ what it is today. Hi! I read DJ Magazine by chance while visiting Munch and I like it so much. It is very useful for me and really meets my all need about everything. I keep opening it to take some numbers, information, and places info. Thanks a lot! Banan I really enjoyed reading your article on Green Offices in the June edition of DJ. This is precisely what I’ve been trying to do in our company, but have faced a problem when it comes to recycling. There are several recycling companies but they only accept large amounts of material, I could not find anyone that collects small amounts of recycling paper specifically. Perhaps you can help? Abdul-Hamid Hi Abdul-Hamid, We’re glad to hear that you are encouraging your company to recycle! You can check with Mawakib or Alajr for more recycling options. DJ

Dear Destination Jeddah Team, Thank you very much for your prompt action regarding late receiving of DJ issues... really I was impressed that the next issue (June) I received at the end of May...that was impressive! Wish you all the best and continued success. One more question...can’t there be others like Destination Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh, Khobar and other major cities? I think it will really make a difference. Good Luck. Randa Hii! First I would like to say how lovely and useful DJ magazine is, although I do have concerns about the telephone directory. I called a kindergarten phone number and a lady answered, saying they have been closed for the past year. I also called a fashion designer once, and the number was not available. So, would you do something about that? Thank you and Good luck! Batta Hassoun Hi Batta Hassoun, Thank you for your comment. It is very hard to keep up with number changes, we are trying our best, and we will continue to update any changes as they happen. Again, thank you, and we apologize for any inconvenience. Thoughts

to Ponder Get Rid of Unhealthy Ramadan Habits! As we all know, Ramadan is not meant to be easy. A time of remembrance, humility and celebration, Ramadan is supposed to bring out the best in every Muslim. It is puzzling then to see so many individuals creating an easy way out for themselves! Habits like sleeping through the day are not only unhealthy but also counter the point of Ramadan - fasting and offering up extra prayers. It’s not too hard to fast if you wake up at 5 PM! Sticking to normal routines and fasting throughout

the day will make your iftar that much more satisfying. Eating heavily at iftar will only make you sluggish; have a light meal when you break your fast and indulge yourself later - your body will thank you for it. Many of us also seem to neglect exercise during Ramadan but if you simply can’t face the treadmill before maghrib, then why not incorporate evening exercise into your Ramadan routine? Finally, allow this blessed month to bring out the best in you. There are so many worthy activities to get involved in during this time, whether it's charity work or volunteering with one of the several civil society groups in Jeddah. Let this Ramadan be your best yet in terms of body, mind, and soul.

Thumbs up to...

Organizations Supporting Saudization

With the upcoming implementation of the Nitaqat system set for November 26th, many companies in the Kingdom are taking a long hard look at how Saudization is (or isn’t) being applied to their own labor force. The Nitaqat system, which measures Saudization, places restrictions on foreign hiring and other punitive measures for companies in the red and yellow categories. For this reason, DJ wanted to put the spotlight on those companies that have built up a reputation for being “Saudization-friendly” long before any of these measures came into effect. Among these companies is NCB, a pioneer in Saudi and female recruitment and winner of the 2011 Prince Naif Prize for Saudization. Programs at NCB aimed at hiring and training Saudis have been in effect since 1995 - making them a preferred employer for many young locals. Previous winners include SABB, Okaz, and Aramco Gulf. However, several members of the DJ staff have been pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of Saudi employees at smaller companies and stores. Marble Slab Creamery, a newly franchised ice cream store, is staffed with knowledgeable and friendly Saudi employees, as is Tala Dates. It is an unexpected, yet pleasant surprise, to encounter these highly-trained Saudis in positions of service and sales and is a testament to the hospitality and work ethic inherent in the local work force.

Thumbs down to... Tassattur Model

The method for foreigners to own or operate a business in Saudi Arabia is often referred to as the ‘tassattur’ model. Saudi’s permit expatriates to menge businesses in their names in return for a share of the profits. This form of business, while common, can actually exploit the foreigner who is tied to his sponsor, and does not encourage the Saudi owner to become an active manager as his returns are based upon someone else’s efforts. While the Ministry of Labor is developing plans to combat this issue, currently in Saudi Arabia 200,000 businesses work under the tassattur model. These companies have total assets of SR 4.1 trillion and employ over 4.8 million people. It will be some time before this business model is replaced by a more equitable method, but it will benefit the labor force as well as the Saudi businesses who seek to become competitive local and global employers. 6

Ramadan Saudi Style! The Month of Cherished Traditions By Bassma Al Toaimi

Ramadan is a month of heightened spirituality and festivity. It’s also a time to honor tradition by embracing the customs of the region. All kinds of traditions, whether they are old or new, transform Ramadan into the annual holy month, especially through celebrating the ties of family and community. Although some old traditions, such as the Msahrati, are slowly fading away, they will always remain in Jeddahwi memories as unique aspects of the month of Ramadan.

10 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Ramadan Canon: The Ramadan Canon is one of the oldest and most beloved traditions of Ramadan. It determines the time the sun has set, and announces to people that they can now break their fast. This custom began with the Egyptians, then spread across the rest of the Arab world. It is said that the canon was used so that villagers far from the main towns would hear it and know that it is time to break their fast and pray maghrib. Al Msahrati: Al Msahrati are the neighborhood drummers who were once a major part of the daily rituals during the month of Ramadan. They would loudly play their drums in order to wake people for the pre-dawn meal (suhoor). However, nowadays many Jeddahwis prefer to stay awake until suhoor, so this old custom is dying out. But the men who practice this tradition say they will still continue to tour their neighborhoods…so don’t be alarmed if you hear loud drumming outside your window before sunrise! Taraweeh: The word ‘taraweeh’ comes from an Arabic word which means ‘to rest’. It is the custom for Muslims to gather in congregation at their local mosque after the fast has broken – 1/30th of the Quran is recited each night so that worshippers will listen to the entire Quran during the month of Ramadan. Although Taraweeh prayers are not mandatory, Muslims still perform these prayers because they are special, and imbue observers with a sense of inner peace and comfort. Those who practice this tradition grow to love praying Taraweeh every night and miss it as soon as Ramadan is over. Ramadan Thobe: In olden days, women wore thobes (long, decorative gowns) regularly throughout the year, then the tradition slowly faded, and is rarely seen today. However, during recent years, women are reviving the custom of wearing thobes during the month of Ramadan. This tradition has spread throughout the Arab countries and is now a visible delight to behold as a festive aspect of the holy month. Charity and Community Service: Helping those who are less fortunate is always encouraged throughout the year, but Ramadan brings heightened awareness to this pillar of Islam. Charity is a major part of Ramadan traditions and it comes in all forms. Some people give clothes, some give money to the poor, and others pass out dates and water on the streets before sunset. A popular form of community service is the Ramadan Sofra (evening fast-breaking meal) which people donate at the masjid. It consists of a long spread of dates, water, and coffee, and everyone is welcomed. People all around the Muslim world tend to become extra generous during the month of Ramadan as a reminder of the good within each of us. Sharing Food With Neighbors: The saying “sharing is caring” definitely applies to everyone during Ramadan. People are more friendly, social, and generous. Just before sunset, neighbors send each other food, even if it is just a plate of dessert or Arabic coffee and dates. In the evening, when families are preparing their suhoor, they prepare extra because they count the neighbors in as one of their own. It is an act of kindness that has been practiced for many years. Sharing your food with your neighbors and people around you is always a nice gesture throughout the year, but in Ramadan it feels especially rewarding. DESTINATION JEDDAH 11

Life In Jeddah: My Perspective as an Expat Shared by Eric Guillermo Paloma

It is only natural for expats in any country to feel homesick and lonely without their families and friends back home. However, the country they live in makes a huge difference! Here in Jeddah people are always smiling, which makes me feel welcomed, just like I am back in my own country. There are many outings I love about Jeddah, such as the coffee shops, restaurants, and camping at sea. In my opinion, Jeddah is the best place to be. It’s my home away from home!

Settling In Stories Dear Settling In,

We recently had a new teacher who arrived from the States. We had our first lesson with her on the second day of her arrival, and the last class was located on the ground floor. While she was teaching, we suddenly heard a car drive by very fast, with a loud screech from the wheels, followed by a loud scream from our teacher. Shocked and surprised, we saw her kneeling on the floor, trying to crawl under a desk. In took her a couple of seconds to recover and when she caught her breath, she exclaimed,“What was that? Was it a bomb?!”We tried not to laugh as we explained that it was just a car that drove by quickly, a normal sound to hear everyday within the city of Jeddah. Mariam M.

Do you have a ‘Settling In’ adventure to share with our readers? Help newcomers avoid the faux-pas you may have made as they adjust to life in Jeddah. Language barriers, rules of the road, cultural missteps...they’re all funny in retrospect. Send in your tales to DJ and we’ll republish them here in an upcoming issue. Jeddah’s Who’s Who Sheikh Tawfiq Al-Sayegh:

Jeddah’s Mosque Star By Rima Al-Mukthtar

Ramadan in Jeddah…a time of sacred reflection and spiritual renewal. Muslims in particular are fortunate that a skilled qari (expert in Quran recitation) and inspirational imam by the name of Sheikh Tawfiq Al-Sayegh is at the helm of the Al Lami Mosque, which is full to overflowing especially during the month of Ramadan. Worshippers are drawn to his melodic Quran recitation as well as his thoughtful, spiritually enlightening sermons and heart-felt prayers.

Profile: Who: Sheikh Tawfiq Al-Sayegh What: Imam and preacher at a mosque. Where: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Qualifications: Majored in Islamic studies, BA from Imam. Muhammed Bin Saud Islamic University in Qaseem and MA from Umm Al-Qura University in Makkah. Currently pursuing a PhD in Islamic Studies/Fiqh Family: Married and blessed with four children: Anas, Joumana, Sayeed and Boshra. 14 DESTINATION JEDDAH

“I don’t remember the exact day I was born because I did not have a memory then, so to me, my birthday is unknown, just like the day I will pass away is unknown. I am certain I was born sometime during the year 1974, but due to the war and the unfortunate circumstances my people were facing at the time, birth certificates and other important documents were lost.” Sheikh AlSayegh was educated in Saudi Arabia where he became a hafiz (someone who has memorized the entire Quran) under the guidance of his teacher Dr. Saleh Al-Ghazali. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Islamic Studies with a specialization in fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence). “I was great in science related studies and initially I wanted to study medicine or engineering, but my love for Quran compelled me to devote myself to Islamic Studies,” said Sheikh Al-Sayegh. “My family did not push me to major in Islamic studies; they only encouraged me and prayed for me to choose the right path,” he added. While studying at Imam Muhammad ibn Saud Islamic University’s branch in Qassim, he had the opportunity to attend the classes of Sheikh Muhammad ibn Saleh Al-

me, especially the young ones. The youth are the largest group to my mosque,” he said. His travels throughout the world have added to his experience and knowledge base; he observed other people’s cultures and lifestyles. “I learned about how to deal with people from different backgrounds and the way they think.” His travels also provided him with numerous opportunities for him to meet Muslim minorities, especially those in Europe, where he was able to conduct seminars and talks. “I added to their Islamic knowledge - I used to meet with them and answer their questions and give them Islamic courses,” he said. Issues relating to identity remain one of the causes that preoccupy his mind. Othaimeen, who is one of the most prominent Islamic scholars in the Kingdom. He later joined Um Al-Qura University in Makkah. While Sheikh Al-Sayegh’s encyclopedic knowledge about Islam is undisputed, his charismatic manner and gifted recitations are the attraction for the crowds which flock to hear him conduct prayers. He modestly states, “I believe that all people are religious and they are always seeking for answers to what triggers them and what moves their emotion… and that’s what makes them attracted to one mosque more than the other.” But it is largely Sheikh AlSayegh’s voice which can move people to tears. Listening to him plead for justice and mercy for Muslims around the world is an opportunity to marvel at the powerful depth of emotion which he is able to tap into.

“Identity, in its broadest sense, is what concerns me. A Muslim is a stranger in his homeland because the true identity has not rooted in the same Muslim,” he said. “I wish to hear that one identity from the East isn’t a stranger in the West and the Western Muslim is not stranger in the East.” Sheikh Al-Sayegh’s vision of a unified Muslim identity is a dream in the making. His beautiful supplications for peace and mercy invite listeners to a higher plane of spiritual celebration, while his melodious young voice is a tuneful prayer of delight. For worshippers of all ages, Ramadan is not complete without a visit to hear the Quran as recited in the Al Lami Mosque.

“I believe that deep down, everyone is in touch with their religious roots. All it takes is the right guidance which provides them with simplified answers, and shows them how Islam embraces our modern ways of living today, as long as we are within the boundaries of Islamic laws. The proper recitation of the Quran is like water that nurtures the religious roots within us all, and allows them to grow.” What sets Sheikh Al-Sayegh apart from other imams and preachers is the connection to his community of worshippers; he is close to the people who seek his guidance and advice. They come to discuss their problems and worries with him. “I believe that this is the main reason that people come to DESTINATION JEDDAH 15

Character through Caricature Mazen Al-Rammal owes his current status as an artist extraordinaire to the keen eye of his father. Years ago, Mazen discarded a random doodle in the garbage… his father picked it up and instantly recognized his son’s innate talents. Although many doting parents have hung up their children’s amateur art creations, Mazen’s father happened to spot true talent; the rest is history (and that original sketch has since been ironed, framed, and hangs proudly on the living room wall.)

Aside from being a full time art teacher at a local school, Mazen

is also a freelance caricaturist for Al-Nadi and Okaz newspapers. In his free time on weekends he sets up a small booth in front of Brioche Duree in Mall of Arabia and does portraits for the public. Medina Al-Munawarah Simply The City Of The Messenger By Noor Qamar Zaheer

Rich history, eclectic cuisine and gracious people all packed within a city surrounded by a desert oasis and mountains. Medina Al-Munawarah is quite simply the city of the Messenger (PBUH). Ramadan is the time when travelers from across the Kingdom and the world descend on this magnificent city and they do not leave disappointed. Medina is host to the first Mosque, the Prophet’s mosque and a number of historical sites and venues that outline its rich culture and heritage.

30 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Masjid Al Gumamah

Masjid-e-Nabawi

Medina Al-Munawarah is located within the northwest of the Kingdom. There are several ways of traveling to Medina, either by bus, car or air. The car is the most frequent mode of transport for most people traveling to Medina from Jeddah. An alternative option would be to take the bus. SAPTCO buses are readily available and are among the cheapest modes of transportation to Medina. Prices start from SR55 per person from Jeddah to Medina. Keep in mind that you have to have your valid iqama, ID and passport to buy a bus ticket since regular checks are carried out at checkpoints in and out of Medina. The last and quickest way to get to Medina is by air. Saudi Arabian airlines have frequent flights going out to Medina. Prices start from SR 350 per person for one-way tickets. Once you have reached Medina, there are abundant hotels in Medina and most of them are a stone’s throw away from the Prophet’s mosque, Masjid-e-Nabawi. The masjid is the second holiest site within the Muslim Ummah since it is the resting place of Allah’s last and dearest Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The characteristic feature of the mosque is the Green dome that symbolizes the place where the Prophet (PBUH) is buried. The location of the mosque is unique since it was previously the house of Muhammad (PBUH). At the heart of the house is a very special but small area called the Al-Rawdah that is considered as being a small piece of Heaven. Apart from the Masjid-e-Nabawi, Medina also hosts the very first mosque built in

Quba mosque

Islamic history. The Prophet himself laid Quba Mosque’s foundation when he first emigrated from Mecca. According to Islamic traditions, praying within Quba mosque is equivalent to one Umrah. Other Mosques that have their own place of significance within Islamic history include the Masjid Al Gumamah where the Prophet (PBUH) prayed for rain and clouds and the Masjid Al-Qiblatain (the mosque of two Qiblahs) where the Prophet (PBUH) changed the direction of the Qiblah from Jerusalem towards Mecca. Recently, the mosque was renovated, removing the old prayer niche facing Jerusalem and leaving the other facing Mecca. Apart from the various mosques located within the city of Medina, there are other historical sites that merit attention. Jabal Ohud, which is located a couple of miles north of Medina, is the site for the battle of Ohud. Here are the graves for the 70 martyred Muslim soldiers, a reminder of the war that took place thousands of years ago. According to history, the Muslims were fighting against the Quraish. Despite their army being fewer in numbers they had almost won the war. By nightfall, the Prophet (PBUH) advised his soldiers to wait through the night and not attack. Despite the Prophet’s warning, the soldiers disobeyed and climbed on the other side to claim victory. The enemy took advantage of their impulsiveness and killed them all. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was injured and his uncle, Hamza ibn Abdul Motalib died. DESTINATION JEDDAH 31

The Palace Of Sa’ad Ibnwakkas 32 DESTINATION JEDDAH

The cave at Ohud Mountain Hejaz Railway

Within the mountain, there is a small cave where there is a preserved imprint of the Prophet’s (PBUH) head. It is said that the Prophet (PBUH) rested his head there. Another site worth mentioning because of its archaeological significance is the Palace of Sa’ad, or in other words, Dar Sa’ad ibnWakkas. It’s a 1400-year-old palace that belonged to the companions of the Prophet (PBUH). The architectural beauty is still evident, and views at sunset from the roof are simply breathtaking.

stretching all around the mosque. Everyone pitches in and helps in distributing food to the visitors and residents alike. The iftar food is donated from the people of Medina and you will be overwhelmed by their generosity. A feeling of awe and contentment fills your heart as you see the graciousness and compassion unfolding in front of you from the people of Medina.

The Othman Empire left behind many remnants, and among them is the scenic train station on the old Hejaz Railway that transported Muslims all along the west coast of the Kingdom and continued to Damascus. The railroad has not operated since World War I, but visitors to the station can admire the beautiful architecture, learn about the site’s history, and enjoy a short ride in an original train car pulled by a steam engine. The station is part of a recreational park with activities, snacks and local crafts.

At night, the city comes alive with shops bustling with customers especially around the Ramadan season. The shops are open throughout the day and night and close only during prayer times. It can be quite a haven for bargain hunters as prices are very cheap. Before going out though, ALWAYS wear comfortable footwear as it can be quite draining going from shop after shop. There are plenty of souvenirs to choose, from the famous Medina dates and loaves of sesame bread called sheraik from the famous Kaki Bakery, prayer mats, prayer beads (misbaha), bags of tea and mint leaves, there is a wide selection on offer that will accommodate your taste and needs.

As the time to break fast draws near, Muslims start getting busy with iftar preparations. The Prophet’s Mosque is a unique sight to behold during Ramadan. Everyday throngs of people flock to the mosque and arrange themselves in rows

Medina is a package holiday because it fuses its urban modern lifestyle with its strong religious and cultural background. If you want to settle those nerves and cleanse your mind and soul, Medina is a fulfilling place to visit that will tick all the boxes. DESTINATION JEDDAH 33

Samah Khashoggi:

The Art of the Abaya

Since 2000, Samah Khashoggi has been reinventing and retuning that “oh so familiar” garment - the abaya. It may be a necessary garment for all residents in the Kingdom, but with intricate embroidery, unexpected details, and a multitude of fabrics and textures, Khashoggi has made sure that even necessity can be executed with style. It is easy to see the influence of the runway on Khashoggi’s exquisite creations. Spanning the range from the casual every day abaya to the more intricate evening abaya - each piece is highly covetable. Details like zippers in unexpected places, silk rosettes and lace paneling make every abaya “unique and chic.” Luxurious minimalism and emphasis on color, cut, and detail are evident in each piece. In a market full of abaya designers and boutiques wholly dedicated to designing and creating abayas, Khashoggi’s designs truly do stand out. Since the inception of Samah Abayas over a decade ago, Khashoggi has managed to create quite a name for herself and her custom-made creations. A regular at exhibitions and bazaars throughout the Kingdom, Samah Abayas also delivers internationally, although most requests 36 DESTINATION JEDDAH

have come from surrounding Gulf countries. Samah Abayas had a humble beginning with Khashoggi first designing abayas for herself, then expanding to friends and family before entering the professional arena. Clients are invited to contact her for individual appointments and consultations to view the latest collections. Samah Abayas releases, on average, two collections a year in addition to creating unique one-off pieces for clients upon request. The most recent collection, heralding the Spring/ Summer season,is a riot of color and patterns. Lightweight fabrics, such as georgette and linen, are creatively utilized to create breathable feminine silhouettes. Tassels, rosettes and embroidery adorn the pieces but the embellishments are simple and elegant and not heavy-handed. Taking inspiration in everything from the colors of nature to the

glittering scales of fish, Khashoggi prides herself on creating practical but beautiful pieces. For example, Samah Abayas offered the high-neck abaya in their last collection: a abaya with a high decorative neck, ensuring modesty even when the veil is removed. “I like focusing on embellishments on the shoulders and sleeves because that’s what shows the most in an abaya, but I keep it practical. For the woman who considers her personal style to be unique and chic, Samah Abayas are the perfect accompaniment to a carefully created look. With a keen eye for detail and an inherent sense of what is popular in the ever fickle abaya market, Abbas prides herself on ensuring that each of her creations are fully customizable according to every individual client’s tastes and requirements. “I want every one of my clients to be unique so I give them as many options as I can in terms of colors and fabrics. Over 55 varieties of colored silks were available for people to choose according to their tastes,” Abbas explained. With a keen interest in design, she happened to enroll in fashion courses by chance and when advised by a friend to begin designing abayas, she jumped at the opportunity. “I first began designing them for myself, because what I was finding in the stores weren’t appealing to me in either patterns or colors.” Beginning with Ramadan thobes and clothes aimed at veiled women, Abbas eventually turned her prowess for designing unique abayas into a profession. Priding herself on utilizing heat-resistant fabrics for her hijabs and a huge selection of colors and patterns, Abbas depends

heavily on inspiration from the runway. “For example, in 2011, I saw a lot of classic details in the new trends - it was the old but with a new twist. I tried to carefully direct my collection to fit that theme.” Although Abbas takes into consideration what is popular at the time in terms of abaya cuts, her greatest inspiration always comes from real-life fashion - fashionable and functional clothing to suit every woman’s taste and lifestyle. Abbas also emphasizes the high quality finishing and cut of every single piece. “Finishing is also very important to me. I make sure that the lines of each abaya are clean and well-finished.” This perfectionist designer offers bold creations with impeccable detail and design suitable for every woman because after all, every woman is unique and therefore, every abaya should also be unique. A NEWfor thePALACE King of Thobes By Dina Ismail

The king of thobes, Hatem Alakeel has created a revolution in the world of thobes. Carving out a name for himself in the Middle East and indeed, the international fashion community, Alakeel’s luxuriously minimalistic forays into the once heavily traditional thobe-making industry have not gone unnoticed. With the opening of his second store and the introduction of new lines of clothing, the charismatic young designer is set to conquer the men’s fashion scene. Everything about Toby, from the pieces in the collections to the stunning design of the newest showroom to Hatem Alakeel himself, speaks to a quiet simplicity. His keen sense of style is manifested magnificently at the newest Toby showroom, located in Rawdah District. Alakeel’s much-loved wave motif is skillfully incorporated into the walls as a testament to the city of Jeddah, while white lends the showroom a serenely minimalist atmosphere. Dominating the space is a unique double chaise longue upholstered in a futuristic silver fabric imported from Paris and made according to Alakeel’s exacting specifications. The overall effect is a skillful melding of contemporary industrialism infused with modern luxury - uniquely 40 DESTINATION JEDDAH

soothing and extremely conducive to a pleasant shopping experience. Alakeel designed the showroom from top to bottom to reflect his personal style sensibilities: “I think every designer needs to showcase their own philosophy and design ethos in everything they create. Everything I put into designing my clothes, I’ve also put into my interior.” In addition to the already hugely successful men’s thobe line at Toby, Alakeel has also expanded the Toby brand; Toby Junior is a line of children’s thobes and casual wear that are sure to appeal to the little boy with a sense of style. Toby also offers men’s casual wear in the form of sportswear and vests. The Toby Professional Line is Alakeel’s way of creating

an all-inclusive fashion brand. For those who do not wear thobes, the Professional Line at Toby is a collection of expertly tailored men’s formal shirts with the signature Toby twist. All in all, the Toby brand as a whole reflects an entire lifestyle and a singular appreciation for quality and style that surpasses the appeal of a single item of clothing or piece. As a Saudi who has lived much of his life abroad, Alakeel is heavily influenced by the concept of East meets West, but maintains the local sensibility. “I work off a concept that combines different element of Khaleeji style (i.e. Saudi, Kuwaiti, Emirati, etc.) to produce one unique style.” Inspired by everything from the innate flair of stars in old black and white Egyptian movies to the modernist designs of architect Zaha Hadid, Alakeel truly is a global designer. The designer is also a proponent of creating functional clothing that is easily wearable but doesn’t compromise style. “I really believe in the strength of design in the Toby collections. We focus on finishing, tailoring, and stitching to produce refined, topnotch quality pieces.” Hatem Alakeel at the helm of Toby is the rising star of men’s fashion in the region. If fashion is universal language, then Alakeel is certainly doing his part to bring down cultural barriers. “I see my pieces as hopefully breaking down perceptions about the region in terms of fashion.” Store 1 Location: Prince Sultan Street, across the street from the fist statue Tel: +966-2-692 3215 Mob: +966-54 057 6639 Store 2 Location: Rawda Street, between Ultimate Power Gym and Domvs Tel: +966 2 664 6671

There are a lot of things we all love about the holy month of Ramadan. Among other things, we all look forward to sunset, when we rush back home from our outings, and pick up our favorite mouth-watering traditional street foods on the way! Usually our iftar table would consist of very popular foods in Ramadan, such as tamees, foul, and samboosa. If you keep reading, you will find out where to get the best of our favorite foods right here in Jeddah. You never know, the best tamees in town could be sold right around your corner!

Foul Refried beans, seasoned to perfection with olive oil, lemon, garlic, and spices. Foul is extremely popular all over the Arab world, and is a mandatory dish on every iftar table! Here are some of the top places around Jeddah: Al Garmoshi, Al Ghamdi, Foul Al Wazeer, Ba Ne’ma, Al Gadri, and Mwafag. If you’re going to Al Ghamdi, try their Foul Golaba, which is a combination of foul with tomato sauce.

Ta’ameya (Falafel)

This treat is so tasty, people all around the world know it and love it, especially during Ramadan! Ta’ameeya is a popular treat for people of all ages. Falafel KingLocated in Khaldeeya, Falafel King is one of the local’s hidden treasures. Even if you don’t like Ta’ameya, this place will change your mind! Refa’at Mini-Market (Saqr Quraish)- A little secret.. this minimarket has very tasty Ta’ameya. Trust us! Al Bahir- An all-time favorite, you can’t go wrong with their Ta’ameya. Ghazi Al HusseiniThis place does not only have amazing Falafel, but it is available in many locations around the city, which makes it very convenient as well. While you’re there, why not also pick up a plate of their delightful Koshari? (A popular Egyptian dish which consists of rice, pasta, lentil, and topped with a light tomato sauce).

Tameez Fact: everyone loves tameez! Baked to golden-brown perfection, this Afghani flat-bread can be soft, crunchy, or chewy, depending on how you like it. Our selection of favorite tameez places are Al Ghamdi, Mwafag, Ayam Zaman, Al Garmoshi, and Al Wazir.

Qorbanlocated in Hera’a, Qorban has tasty and crunchy samboosa. Olfat- For a very good dough, Olfat is highly recommended!

Desserts A meal is never complete without dessert. Certain types of desserts are very popular during Ramadan, and some are only made during this holy month. We gathered the best of the best for you, so read on! Mahawi- Halawat Aljebn, and Baglawa. Another reason we love Mahawi is because they have sweets for diabetics, which are just as tasty as the rest of their goodies. Sa’ad Aldeen- Basboosa with cream, and the famous Um Ali. Halawani- Gatayyef Asafeer and Halawat Aljebn Al Samady- Banana Konafa, Konafa House- Generally the juciest konafas in town! Juices There is nothing more refreshing than an ice-cold glass of fresh juice that bursts with flavor to quench your thirst after a long and tiring day of fasting in the heat. Below are our favorite flavors! Juice World- Orange with Pineapple juice, and Mango juice. Goodies- Pomegranate Juice Fakehat Lebnan- Jalab (juice made from dates, raisins, and rose water, with pine nuts- super sweet and refreshing), and Cocktail Halawani- Jalab, and Tamarind Al Saeedy Juices- Sugarcane (Gasab Al Sukkar)

Soobya This refreshing drink made of barley and bread is a special Ramadan drink. If you see vendors on the streets holding juice in plastic bags, you know it’s Soobya! Applebee’s, one of the most popular and beloved American restaurants in Saudi Arabia, is also the world’s largest casual dining chain, with over 2,100 restaurants in more than 20 countries. Their mouth-watering dishes and excellent service ensures their leading position -in fact, according to a survey, Applebee’s succulent steak was rated the best in the country! Since the first branch opened in Saudi Arabia in January 2003, Applebee’s has steadily expanded to 13 branches throughout the Kingdom. Arabian Entertainment Company Ltd (AECL), owner of franchise rights within the Kingdom, is the largest franchisee for Applebee’s in the Middle East and was awarded the “Franchisee of the Year” award for three consecutive years. They have strong marketing partnerships with STC, Riyadh Bank, and Al Jazeera Bank.

For the past three years, Applebee’s has been one of the first casual dining restaurants to offer a Ramadan Buffet. Iftar at Applebee’s will be a memorable experience; the Ramadan Menu consists of your choice of soup, salad, and beverages from the buffet table, and your choice from a selection of the Ramadan dishes on the menu. This meal deal is available for a fixed price of SR75 for adults and SR19 for children. In addition to their successful restaurant experience, Applebee’s is also actively 64 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Ramadan Relief: End the Suffering By Dilara Hafiz

Imagine the electricity going off in Jeddah. Imagine the water drying up in the pipes overnight. Imagine no food on the shelves in any grocery store…

You’d be alright since your kitchen is stocked with supplies to last at least a month, right? But for millions of people in less developed countries who are living at the subsistence level, all it takes is a natural disaster such as a drought or an earthquake to push them into the abyss of abject poverty. The results of war or revolution can wreak equally devastating consequences. This Ramadan, focus your charitable donations on those segments of the population whose lives are most at risk – the children. In Palestine, Somalia, Pakistan, and countless other countries, children suffer high mortality rates due to lack of food, clean water, and medicine. The basics which many of us take for granted are life-saving miracles for millions of families around the world. A small donation can truly make the difference between life and death.

RAMADAN It’s More Than Fasting and Praying “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint.” Albaqarah / 2:183 Yusuf Ali Translation of the Holy Quran

Ramadan is traditionally a time when Muslims focus on days spent in fasting and nights spent in praying. But the month of Ramadan actually encompasses a much wider dimension of character improvement – Muslims are encouraged to spend time with friends and family, to spend their resources on charitable volunteering and giving, and simply encouraging a kindlier, gentler demeanor. The physical aspects of fasting and praying are purely matters of self-restraint. Once the mind over matter issue is under control, Ramadan is an ideal time to turn your attention to those niggling items which have been hovering about your conscience for the past year. Have you visited that distant relative recently? Have you shared food with your neighbors during the hectic daily routine? Have you cleaned out your closet and donated unneeded items to charity? All this and more can be achieved during the slower pace of life which fasting and praying dictates. While the focus on food can seem indulgent, it’s actually an opportunity to celebrate family recipes and share successful dishes with neighbors to encourage a strong sense of community. Behind the high walls of Jeddah’s villas and apartments live neighbors who can quickly become lifelong friends once you’ve shared a favorite dish with them. Ramadan is the excuse to broach these barriers! Extend your circle of

socializing to include all the distant relatives and forgotten friends who would welcome an invitation to break the fast in a friendly atmosphere. Prayer and a time for spiritual reflection can become an ideal opportunity to gather the younger generation in the time-honored rituals which they may not fully understand. Discuss the daily Quran reading in a family setting to strengthen the ties of morality in a non-judgmental manner. Live fully and laugh often – a simple Ramadan recipe to ensure a memorable month.

Easier ... By Noor Qamar Zaheer

“(This is) a Scripture that We have revealed unto thee, full of blessing, that they may ponder its revelations, and that men of understanding may reflect” (38:29) Surat Sad As Muslims, it is very important for us and for our children to know and understand the basic principles of Islam. We start deciphering the meaning of Islam when we start to read and understand the Holy Quran. In today’s rapidly evolving fast paced environment where there is no time to squeeze, keeping yourself and your children in touch with religion can be a daunting task. Especially when it comes to finding an experienced, dependable teacher together with finding the convenient time to dropping your kids off to the venue and picking them up later when class is finished. It can get quite cumbersome. The availability of the Internet has made it possible to combat the problem faced by most parents. Today, a number of religious sites offer the option of learning Quran online. There is no need to send your kids outside when they can learn online at home under their parents’ supervision. Children or adults can learn Quran with Tajweed from qualified male or female tutors any time 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The teachers are competent and professional and most of these sites offer the

76 DESTINATION JEDDAH

option of a free 3-day trial before you can start regular lessons. The lessons are taught live on a one-on-one basis between teacher and pupil. The only arrangement that needs to be done by the pupil is to have a computer, headset, microphone and broadband connection. E-Learning of the Quran has become a very popular distance learning technique for Muslims throughout the world to educate themselves and to spread the knowledge and message of Islam. Why not take advantage of this opportunity and give learning Quran online a chance? It will make it easier, comfortable and less time-consuming to learn Quran and you can do it at a time that is convenient to you. There are many secure sites that offer to teach children and adults alike how to read and understand the Holy Quran. Amongst them include a few that we came across: www.learningquranonline.com www.homequran.com/learn-quran-online www.quranteaching.com www.quranreading.com www.understandquran.com (FREE)

Destination USA:

Saudi Students Share Perspectives on Studying Abroad

By Dilara Hafiz

With the new school year underway, DJ wondered how Saudi students who’ve chosen to study abroad are faring in this volatile climate. Hala from Jeddah, currently a sophomore at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, and Bander from Dammam, a graduate student at Arizona State University in Phoenix, Arizona, share their thoughts with us.

1) What’s it like being a Saudi in America?

Hala: I had some cultural shocks at the beginning. Although Saudi’s culture is very different, the people here are accepting of different backgrounds and faiths. They are interested in learning more about my culture. Bander: Americans respect Saudi students - they love to know about our religion, culture, and traditions. Professors appreciate your ideas, encourage, and support you, regardless of where you are from.

2) Would you recommend other Saudi students to come to America?

Hala: Definitely! The education system here is much more open. There are so many options, resources, and majors here. Education goes beyond the books, it’s not just about lectures and memorization. There are so many opportunities to get fellowships and work on personal projects. This summer I got a fellowship from Yale to live in 78 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Washington DC, where I interned for Riz Khan at Aljazeera English. Bander: Yes, however, I advise them to select the right university. Also, it is a great idea to connect with the Saudi Students Club on campus; they have a lot of great information for the new students. Last but not least, I advise new students to improve their English skills to help them in basic communication in their new society.

3) What’s the best/worst part about being an international student so far from home?

Hala: The worst part of studying abroad is being so far away from your family. I am the eldest of six, so being away from my siblings for so long is very difficult. They are growing up so quickly - I am missing out on a lot of little changes like when they lose their teeth! The best part is definitely the education - it is worth the distance. You learn and grow so much as a person. Bander: The best thing is learning how to be responsible and how to solve your own problems. Also, opening the circle of thinking by learning to think outside the traditional box - that will be the path of having our country improve in technology and become a more independent country. However, the worst thing is feeling homesick, especially over Ramadan, and the lack of family at celebrations such as Eid.

Eid Celebrations:

Beating The Rush By Dina Ismail

Those remaining in the Kingdom will be glad to know that there is no shortage of options in celebrating a memorable Eid right here in Jeddah. Many hotels offer their variations of the traditional Eid breakfast and these can be a great way to celebrate with friends and family in a convivial and lively atmosphere. If you’re planning a Eid breakfast at one of the big hotels such as Park Hyatt, Hilton, Rosewood, or the Westin, be sure to book well in advance! For those planning to spend Eid at the beach, this also applies - beach rentals go extremely quickly so plan well ahead to ensure that you are able to secure a villa or cabin. Jeddah is a great place to spend Eid, the sense of festivity in the air is infectious and for those who with family in the city, simply doing the Eid rounds can be enough of a celebration.

Many Jeddahwis choose to take full advantage of the somewhat short two week Eid holiday (on average, two weeks) and travel outside of the Kingdom. To retain the sense of celebration, why not take a trip to one of the surrounding countries such as Lebanon, Turkey, or the UAE? In this wway, the flavor of “Eid” is still present and you can be sure that everyone around you is just as happy to be celebrating! Whether you choose to remain in the Middle East or go even further, plane tickets and accommodations should be booked well in advance. Ticket prices increase exponentially in the last few weeks of Ramadan so if you’re looking for a good deal, start looking as soon as possible. Whether you choose to remain in Jeddah for Eid or travel elsewhere, DJ wishes all of its readers a safe and blessed Eid - may your celebrations be joyful wherever you are!

Jet-Set Celebrations

Enjoying The City

As anyone who has lived in the Kingdom for a while will know by now, Eid in Jeddah can be one of the liveliest, most exciting, and also most chaotic times to be in the city. Many Jeddahwis opt for traveling outside of the Kingdom to celebrate Eid while many residents from surrounding cities descend upon Jeddah for a memorable break among the hustle and bustle of our fair city. Whichever choice you make, it never hurts to be aware of your options and above all, be prepared!

Decoding Ramadan Discomfort

By Noor Qamar Zaheer

Do you feel bloated during Ramadan? Sluggish? Does your stomach grumble at the sight of food? Does your throat feel dry? It’s not that simple to fast, especially in Jeddah in summer, where high temperatures and humidity combined with long days can be challenging. In order to keep those hunger pangs to a minimum and keep your essential energy levels up, here are a few tips that you can incorporate in your everyday fast. It’s all very well (and common sense!) to try and gulp down as much water as possible between iftar and suhoor but what else? In order to keep cool, try consuming at least two tablespoons of plain full-fat yoghurt at suhoor after you finish with your meal. Yoghurt alleviates your hunger pangs, is good for digestion, and reduces thirst. At suhoor, try to eat light, but filling meals oatmeal, lentils, plenty of salads, wheat. This will keep you charged up till iftar with a minimum of bloating symptoms. Reduce caffeine. Avoid fizzy, caffeinated drinks, especially at suhoor. Caffeine is a diuretic which actually makes your body lose water and may lead to bloating, irritability and mood swings. Try to cut down on your everyday caffeine intake a few 80 DESTINATION JEDDAH

weeks before Ramadan starts. A steaming cup of green tea with honey and mint leaves can be a satisfying coffee substitute. Fruits and Veggies! It’s summer, so there is plenty of delicious ripe seasonal fruit to go around. Jeddah’s excellent travel links ensure that all types of fruits from across the world are readily available. Choose fruits with a high water content: strawberries (94%), raspberries (95%), apples (91%), peaches (92%) and the king of all summer fruits - the watermelon (92%). Incorporate all these to make a refreshing fruit salad or combine fruits with traditional desserts for a fresh, light taste. All in all, a well-balanced diet will keep you charged up to enjoy those important social and religious festivities. Ramadan Kareem!

Eco-Friendly Cooking: It’s Not Just About Cooking Green Things People who’ve embraced a ‘green’ lifestyle pride themselves on their recycling habits, organic food purchases, and low household consumption of water and energy. That’s great! But living a green lifestyle in the kitchen encompasses more than serving fresh green vegetables with every meal – there are numerous energy-saving tips which the diligent cook can easily adopt to transform her kitchen into a truly green arena. 1. Use the right-sized burner: small pot=small burner. It’s a no-brainer! 2. Boil water in an electric kettle, then pour into a pot for boiling rice/ pasta/tea etc. Electric kettles are twice as efficient as boiling water on a stove. 3. Use residual heat by turning off your oven 5 minutes before set cooking time or place side dishes alongside main course in oven instead of popping them in the microwave. 4. Eliminate paper in your kitchen! Use cloth napkins, absorbent towels, and natural sponges. 5. Don’t overwork your refrigerator: the optimal temperature range for your refrigerator is 35–38°F (2-3°C) & the freezer should be 0°F (-18°C). 6. Select ‘smart’ appliances: toaster ovens can handle small items,

pressure cookers zap beans/meats in a fraction of the time while retaining flavor and moisture! 7. Allow leftovers to cool down before placing them in the fridge – don’t stress your fridge unnecessarily. 8. Only run your dishwasher when it’s full – learn to stack it efficiently to maximum capacity.

Saudi Business Takes Initiative to Protect Saudi Environment “To preserve, protect and develop the environment for the sake of saving lives and protecting property.” This is the motto of the Saudi Gulf Environmental Protection Company (SEPCO). Established in 1997, SEPCO Environment has been a front-runner in the field of Environmental Protection. The company specialized initially in Medical Waste Management; they currently provide biological waste disposal services to over 4,500 health care facilities around KSA. SEPCO Environment has established eight biological waste treatment plants in Riyadh, Jeddah, Khamis Musheit, Taif, Dammam, Tabuk, Al-Qaseem and Al-Madinah. In addition, they offer pollution monitoring and chemical analysis in the following areas: • Air Pollution Treatment Technology • Waste Treatment Technology for Industrial Waste (Solid, Liquid, Gas) and

Municipal Waste • Energy Recovery Equipments and Systems • Water Treatment Systems SEPCO Environment is now entering the field of collecting, transporting, treating, and disposing of hazardous industrial waste in environmentally safe and internationally approved methods to meet global criteria. They recognized the escalating costs of sending lab samples abroad due to the lack of advanced laboratory services in KSA. It has been a common practice for many industries in both the private and government sectors to send their environmental samples abroad for analysis. By handling these tests in house, SEPCO can service the needs of contractors, refineries and industrial facilities to conduct environmental lab tests quickly and affordably. This seerah (biography of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH) is widely considered the definitive work on the life of the Prophet. It won first prize by the Muslim World League in 1979, following an open competition for a book on the life of Muhammad. It includes various phases of the Prophet’s life as well as authentic references. The title of the book is taken from verse 83:25 of the Quran: ”Yusqawna mirraheeq-(in)makhtum-in” meaning “Their drinks will be spiced with sealed nectar.”. DESTINATION JEDDAH 89

Useful Arabic Words & Pronunciations

Arabic is the world’s 5th most commonly spoken language with almost 300 million native speakers. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and belongs to the Semitic group of languages. The three main classifications are: Classical Arabic, also known as the language of the Qur’an, Modern Standard Arabic, used in books, newspapers, and media, and Local dialects, which vary from country and region. Arabic words are constructed from threeletter “roots” which convey a basic idea. For example, k-t-b conveys the idea of writing. The addition of other letters before, between and after the root letters produces many associated words: not only “write” but also “book”, “office”, “library”, and “author”. The Arabic alphabet consists of 28 consonants and three vowels – a, i, u; it is written from right to left. Some of the glottal sounds are unique to Arabic. The Arabic words presented opposite reflect the Hijazi dialect.

Where did this word come from? Did you know that many English words have Arabic origins? Algebra, alchemy, and algorithm are easily identifiable by the ‘al’ which means ‘the’ in Arabic, but how about these words…

Saffron ‫ زعفران‬za’farān, saffron, which itself

derives from the adjective ‫صفَر‬ ْ َ ‫( أ‬aṣfar, “yellow”) is a spice derived from the flower of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus). The dried stigmas are used in cooking as a seasoning and coloring agent. It is commonly used in many famous Ramadan desserts and syrups. 90 DESTINATION JEDDAH
