Thoughts

to Ponder Are YOU Doing Your Part To Support Cancer Patients? Although cancer is an insidious disease which is increasingly affecting every family…you don’t have to personally know someone with cancer in order to get involved. There are so many worthwhile charities, cancer societies, and awareness/research efforts which could use your assistance, either in the form of volunteering a few hours of your time or making a small monetary donation to the

cause. Educating the public about the signs of cancer and the preventive diet/lifestyle measures are important first steps in reducing the cancer rates in society. Check with your local hospital for volunteer opportunities in the cancer ward – sometimes just visiting patients for a ‘cheer-up’ visit can brighten up someone’s day. Take part in cancer fundraisers, cancer information sessions, and cancer research studies if you qualify…it will take a concerted effort to eradicate this deadly disease. The cure for cancer is out there somewhere.

Sheikh Mohammed Hussien AL-Amoudi Center

The Sheikh Mohammed Hussien AL-Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer’s mission is ‘towards world-class healthcare for women.’ Launched in July 2010, the Center aims to provide the ultimate in breast cancer awareness, detection, and treatment.Mr. Osama Tayyeb, the head of King Abdulaziz University, and the generous contribution of businessman Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al-Amoudi, and the hard work of Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi, the prominent international activist and breast cancer survivor are the three main catalysts behind the Center. In just one short year, the Center has succeeded in not only raising awareness about the importance of early detection, but also provides quality health-care service while conducting research into breast cancer. They have also published an Arabic sign language book about breast cancer, the first of its kind in the Arab world. This informative handbook has been included on the websites of both the International Breast Health Initiative and Middle Eastern Partnership. Dr. Samia Al-Amoudi has also been selected to join the Executive Board of the International Breast Health Initiative in the US.

Thumbs down to...

Limited Number of Oncologists and Specialized Cancer hospitals in Jeddah The level of cancer care has improved in recent years in Jeddah, however it still has a long way to go in order to match the larger hospitals in Riyadh which have specialized cancer units. Qualified oncologists with years of experience who are also up-to-date with the latest treatment options are sorely needed to staff new cancer units and specialized hospitals. Cancer research centers which continue to explore cutting-edge developments in the field of radiology, oncology, and other cancer-related fields are also necessary in order to provide the populace with the latest in medical care. Campaigns raising awareness about all types of cancer prevention and early detection are positive steps to improving the overall medical health of the region…but Jeddah still has a long way to go. 8

A Woman’s Perspective Solving the Top 5 Issues Facing Expat Women You Asked… We Answered !! By Dilara Hafiz

Saudi Arabia…the land of sun, sand, sea, and shopping malls. From an expat woman’s perspective, is that all there is to life here? Of course not! Delve beneath the surface and you’ll discover a fascinating country with a rich cultural history and friendly people who are proud to explain their traditions to you. The importance of understanding Arab society in order to have a successful stay cannot be underestimated; the segregation between men and women can be navigated easily once you’re wearing the right clothes, for example, while enjoying the outdoors is also possible once you familiarize yourself with the expat beach clubs and boating options. So here are the top 5 women’s concerns upon arrival in Jeddah: 1. Where can I buy an abaya? Great question! Assuming that your husband or sponsor did not bring one for you to the airport, your priority on Day 1 is to purchase an abaya – the long, black cloak which women customarily wear in Saudi Arabia. If you’re desperate, pop into any Panda grocery store and grab a generic abaya for SR 65-75. They are sized according to height, so as long as your’s is long enough to touch the ground, you’re good to go. (Of course, your friends will laugh at you when you tell them where you bought your abaya – so head over to Balad where Queen’s Mall has 3 floors of ready-to-wear affordable abayas.) Once you’ve settled down and 14 DESTINATION JEDDAH

unpacked, then you’ll quickly discover the luxury boutiques and designer abayas in Jeddah’s leading malls and Tahlia Street – prices can quickly reach into four figures, but consider it an investment as your abaya is the face you present in public. 2. Can someone recommend good nursery schools/ kindergartens? Education is a priority, and Jeddah has a variety of Montessori, nursery, and kindergartens with international curriculums. Word of mouth recommendations, consulate information, and neighbors are all wonderful sources of information. Also check the notice boards in your compound for school flyers. Nothing compares to visiting each school, speaking with the administration, and observing the teachers in action – allow yourself at least a week to make sure that you make the right choice. Happy kids make a happy home. Check the September issue of Destination Jeddah for an article on this topic, as well as the General Directory at the back of each issue for a listing of schools. 3. Can someone recommend a good tailor? Tricky question as everyone jealously guards their tailor’s identity – sorry! You can try Makrona Souk as it is full of abaya fabric shops as well as ribbons, buttons, and other essential abaya trimmings. Rows of tailors are available to sew a custom-made abaya to your taste and specifications, so let your inner designer out.

4. Ditto for hairdressers – can anyone recommend a good one? Jeddah has lots of beauty parlors in all price ranges; ask your friends and neighbors for their recommendations, but basically it’ll come down to your personal choice. The range of services is remarkable – you can indulge in a Moroccan hammam, a European spa, a Turkish bath, Indian threading and henna application, the latest cosmetic enhancements such as Botox, laser facials, and chemical peels etc. Beauty is big business in Jeddah. 5. Can anyone suggest fun activities for my kids? Sports clubs/playgroups/ arts & crafts? Check with parents at your school for their input first, but there are loads of gyms which offer indoor classes and fun holiday schedules to keep kids fit and happy. Boating and jet-skiing are just two of the water sports available in Obhur, more adventurous teenagers will enjoy snorkeling and scuba-diving. Destination Jeddah Dive Directory lists the main water sport outfitters, but if you’re lucky enough to make friends with someone who owns a beach chalet, then your weekends can be spent enjoying the beauty of the Red Sea which is on Jeddah’s doorstep.

Settling In Stories This is the story of my culture shock as a Saudi student experiencing life in America for the first time back in the late 1970’s. In those days, all students would first fly to Houston for orientation prior to settling down at their individual colleges. Imagine a young group of Saudis preparing to spend their first night alone in America...little realizing that October 31 = Halloween, a holiday which we had never heard of back then! When the doorbell rang, we peeked through the security slot and saw...a WITCH and an ugly looking creature next to her. We huddled in a corner whispering about what we should do; we decided to keep quiet until she gave up and moved on, but minutes later we heard another knock - we take a look and saw a little Frankenstein and a Superman! We peeped outside and saw the whole street full of crazy people dressed up in different costumes running around from door to door. What was going on? We called our group organizer and explained our situation - he burst out laughing, then apologized for not explaining about Halloween. He came over and took us all out for a little fun. Ever since then, Halloween has became my favorite holiday and this story is my kids’ favorite story. Happy Halloween and watch out for the ghosts and goblins!

Do you have a ‘Settling In’ adventure to share with our readers? Help newcomers avoid the faux-pas you may have made as they adjust to life in Jeddah. One-on-One:

HRH Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan Al-Saud By Marriam Mossalli

In Saudi Arabia, women are finally talking about their breasts. In a conservative country that often finds such topics of conversation taboo, one woman has made it her mission to overcome the cultural stigma in order to initiate dialogue among women and create awareness about one of the most prevalent forms of cancer in Saudi Arabia – breast cancer. This ardent advocate is HRH Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Sultan Al-Saud. Last October, together with Zahra Breast Cancer Association, HRH Princess Reema led 3,952 Saudi women to achieve the Guinness World Record for the largest human awareness ribbon. This is an incredible feat on its own, but even more so because of the cultural obstacles often impeding early detection and treatment within the Kingdom. Some Saudi women are afraid their husbands will divorce them if they become aware of their diagnoses, or they’ll lose their female identity if treatment requires a mastectomy (the surgical removal of one or both breasts), while others may avoid treatment because they feel their disease is God’s will. Through educational programs, awareness campaigns, and an undying passion to help save lives, HRH Princess Reema is leading the crusade to make such notions obsolete.

treated by a male doctor or male mammogram technician.

Destination Jeddah was able to speak one-on-one with HRH Princess Reema for a candid interview; she was able to debunk myths (no, size doesn’t matter and yes, men you can get it), explain why it’s currently impossible to get accurate, real-time statistics on breast cancer’s prevalence in Saudi, and which programs and awareness campaigns are actually effective in a nation, where some women simply ignore their disease because of fear of being

Another issue is women of better means who are diagnosed tend to travel out of the country for their treatment, again not allowing for current information related to their disease to be documented. This affects budgeting at the Ministry as they allow for a budget according to recorded statistics of diseases in the Kingdom.

18 DESTINATION JEDDAH

Destination Jeddah: Statistics on breast cancer prevalence in Saudi are usually outdated by three years and often inaccurate. What are the obstacles in acquiring up-to-date and accurate statistics? HRH Reema Bint Bandar: One key problem is rural villages don’t have access to oncologists and the travel to larger medical centers is out of their reach for the women based there for multiple reasons: Distance, cost of travel, and the ability to find transportation. Due to this, women tend to arrive in late stages, therefore skewing the data the Ministry of Health has related to the onset of the disease and its prevalence in the country.

DJ: How is the Zahra Breast Cancer Association hoping to rectify this void of data?

Zahra to do my part to help educate women about this disease and to be a support to them.

HRH: Zahra wants to open offices all over Saudi to allow access to education and also real time info that can be passed to the Ministry. We try to impress upon women the fact that at the early onset of the disease there is a 97% chance of cure and treatment. This is true only if reached at early stages. Our solution is mobile clinics, and we are actively working toward achieving that goal. We travel all over the country and speak at public social recreation centers, universities, colleges and mosques. Trips to rural villages and the mobile mammogram machine campaign are our greatest hope to make a difference in these women’s lives.

DJ: Congratulations on last year’s Guinness World Record for the largest human awareness ribbon! Please tell us about the experience and the support witnessed from the local community. Does it accurately reflect an increased awareness among women in the community?

HRH: As you say, in many rural villages women find out at early stages and disappear due to fear of abandonment from their husbands. This is a sad reality since by the time they return to the medical system; they are in late stages where they are no longer treatable. There is a massive stigma, but that just makes our job more necessary. We recruit survivors as much as possible to show that there is hope. When a survivor speaks to others - there is an instant recognition and comfort level that is developed.

DJ: What other initiatives in terms of educating the community does Zahra orchestrate and execute?

HRH: The experience was incredible from multiple levels: a sense of community, support, and yes, even some glitches, but an overall success. What we saw is women of all ages, all sectors of society coming together not to break a record, but to stand side-by-side in support of each other. That is what I am most proud of. It reflects that fact that we can DJ: In Saudi, there is still a stigma when it comes reach and mobilize large numbers of women and as such, I believe they are our ambassadors for our to breast cancer. How does awareness help to cause and mission. alleviate such perceptions?

HRH: The focus of Zahra in our early days was early detection and screening. Today, we have expanded our activities to education for prevention in terms of nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, monthly self-examinations and regular mammograms depending on age: age 40 = every 2 years, age 50 = every year. Females with a family history of cancer should consult with their doctors to see how often they need a mammogram.

DJ: How does Saudi’s treatment facilities compare DJ:Manywomenfeelthatthesmallertheirbreasts, with the rest of the world? the less chance of cancer. Is there any truth to this myth? HRH: Treatment wise it is on par, but our issue is that only the major cities have the treatment centers and thus, they are pressured due to not having time and facilities to treat the number of people that are filtered their way. We need to increase the amount of treatment centers and localize them to the rest of the Kingdom to allow patients better access at an earlier stage and more effective treatment.

HRH: This is an absolute myth that needs to be knocked out! Size has nothing to do with it. Studies have shown there to be a possibility of increase in the chances of breast cancer with increased age, if there is a family history of breast cancer, or previous diagnoses of any other cancer. It is important to note that Zahra reaches out to the DJ: What made breast cancer awareness your male population and we have had some successful personal mission? campaigns to educate men via male volunteers to discuss breast cancer not only as it relates to HRH: I had never thought of breast cancer as an issue that would touch my life until one day I heard women’s health and how they can support the women in their lives, but also that it can affect men, from a dear friend that she had been diagnosed. though at a lower rate. She was the catalyst for my joining Zahra. Since that day I have had family members, friends, and work associates who have been diagnosed, which only compelled me more to work with the ladies of DESTINATION JEDDAH 19

REVEALING

THE CONCEALED:

ART & CENSORSHIP Jowhara AlSaud’s latest exhibition ‘Your Friends and Neighbours’ at the Athr Gallery is part of her ‘Out of Line’ series which focuses on censorship and its effects on visual communication. A native Saudi who splits her time between Jeddah, and New York, AlSaud studied film theory at Wellesley College and went on to receive her Master of Fine Arts in 2004 from the School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her latest pieces are her interpretation of the complexities of cultural traditions as she manipulates photographs of Saudis in social interactions – the collective family. By erasing the facial features, she succeeds in conveying an intimate, yet identity-less, image…exposing interactions which capture the confidence and care-free attitudes depicted by the participants. The faceless images are arresting as they convey a snapshot of relationships in relaxation and repose. So much is revealed by what is concealed.

The Teenage Life in Jeddah: Living Between Tradition and Aspiration

By: Layan Abdul Shakoor

The adolescent life in Jeddah is unpredictable; teenagers live in a fast-paced life with various struggles, torn between following tradition and their own aspirations. As 19-year-old Yasmeen al-Sawwaf said, “We face a constant struggle between customs and righteous needs. We are a generation resembling a pressured sphere that is ready to burst.” Limitations are placed on almost everything–– what you can say and do, and even the way you act. Yet, the adolescent life here is a powerful force surging through society. Over the past few years, there have been countless efforts from teenagers to further improve society or simply become a role model for other teenagers alike. But what do we teenagers really think of our lives here? “I believe that in the teenage phase, there is a thirst for creativity and action and a need to be heard. Living in Jeddah, it’s not that easy because the activities related to creativity and action are limited. If a person does have a talent, and wants to be heard, they can’t…because nobody listens, so they feel neglected to the point they refuse to believe that they even have a talent. It’s hard living in Jeddah because of the lack of creativity.” Anonymous, 17 “As a woman in Jeddah who is a lawyerto-be, I face a battle ahead of me as an individual woman in a male-dominated career. It encourages me to work harder to achieve greater success to prove that women are as worthy and as strong as men, and maybe even more so.” Yasmeen al- Sawwaf, 19

30 DESTINATION JEDDAH

“Jeddah is a boring city. There’s nothing to do for a teenager! We have to wear abayas in a place that’s so boiling every single day, and there’s no entertainment whatsoever! I feel trapped in a cage of heat and all everyone cares about here are grades. Why is it so important to get good grades in science when I don’t even want to become a doctor? I hate being trapped, and I hate being forced to do something that I don’t like, but it’s my parent’s wishes, and I have to respect them. What else can I do? I’m young, and because of that reason, I don’t know anything.”  Anonymous, 15

“To live an acceptable life as a female in Jeddah, it all depends on the people you accompany, and I’m not referring to your popularity here. Having a wellconnected social network helps you find what you need, get around, and enjoy your time.” Sundos Malaika, 18 “I love Jeddah; it’s my home, I lived here until I was eight. But then we moved around due to my father’s work, so my parents decided to make it easier for me and sent me to boarding school in Switzerland. I come here on vacations, and honestly, I love every minute of it. I love relaxing at home, seeing my family, and simply being in the place that I was brought up in. When people ask me if I prefer it here or living in Switzerland, they always expect me to say Switzerland because it’s so peaceful, calm, and different, but I always say it’s better here because this is my home and will always be, no matter how different it is. I will always love it.” Anonymous, 16

“Jeddah is an inspiring city to me, personally. I’ve lived here my entire life and, yes, there are times when I wish I could go abroad and breathe a different type of air, but my life is based here. My family and friends are all here, and what’s life without all of that? I feel as if my life is complete. Even though there’s not much to do in Jeddah, it is filled with opportunities - you just have to grab them the second they show up!” Anonymous, 15 “In Jeddah, I’m never alone. If my friends are busy, my brothers are there. If my brothers are busy, my cousins are there. There is always someone you can count on.” Maha al-Ghamdi, 17 “After years of living in Riyadh, I’ll have to say Jeddah feels like a breath of fresh air. I feel like I’m in another world with something new to offer every day. The society, the norms, and culture of Jeddah are significantly different from that of Riyadh. As a young adult, I find socializing in Jeddah to be easier and a lot more exciting than it is in Riyadh. There are generally more things one can do over here. Finding entertainment in Jeddah is nothing to be worried about. The society has some of the friendliest people I came across. From everywhere else I traveled, hospitality is like no other in the city of Jeddah!” Anonymous, 19

Boot Cut

Apple

Don’t Hide

People who are apples are the most difficult to dress, but don’t despair, there are plenty of choices available. People who are apples usually tend to have a large chest and a rounded, undefined belly. Boot cut jeans are perfect for apple-shaped people since they streamline the thighs and kick out over the shoe. Wear a heel (not too large ladies!) to help give the impression of longer legs.

Parade Your Curves

The hourglass shape with its balanced proportions is thought of as the ideal female body shape. Boot cut jeans are perfect for your shape as they tone your thighs and show off your curves. A skinny or straight-legged jean is a good option as well as it will really show off those gorgeous curves of yours. Hunt for jeans that fit perfectly near your waistline. SLEYSLA: A Celebration of Saudi Heritage

The Sleysla Center is a return to the rich heritage of the Kingdom and a celebration of the forgotten crafts and artistry of this rich culture. “Sleysla” is a shortened version of “Selsela”, a type of stitching used in several of the Kingdom’s regions, including Makkah, Al-Baha, Asir, among others. Established by the Al-Faisalya Charity, Sleysla aims to encourage local handmade art, particularly those made by Saudi women. Described as a social welfare initiative, Sleysla produces local and traditional crafts made by Saudi women who are handicapped or deaf and those who come from families with limited income. By propagating a culture of rich art and restoring Saudi traditions of art, Sleysla aims to decrease poverty and unemployment by providing women with training and the opportunity to exhibit and sell their wares. Sleysla products embody such techniques as embroidery, sewing, ceramics, weaving and painting to create varied and warm pieces of art. Items like hand-painted Quran stands, brocaded Quran covers, dolls, and even woven handbags are hand-made using different techniques, including the recognizable palm-fiber weaving, so iconic 38 DESTINATION JEDDAH

in the Kingdom. Using local raw materials and providing training in different artisanal crafts, Sleysla is able to provide women with a real craft that they can utilize to bring in much-needed income or simply to display their skill and support of local Saudi art traditions. Using these time-honored skills and presenting them in a new and modern manner produces some unexpected results for example, a clutch made of palm-fibers. VA VA VOOM, FACES SEPHORA

OR

By Nilo Haq

Where Should I Shop For Makeup ? Living in Jeddah and trying to find the right kind of makeup is challenging…but it can be done. The problems? Well, there are very few, (close to none) female makeup artists at cosmetic stores. Second, most of the salesmen do not speak English, so unless you speak Arabic, you’re out of luck when trying to ask questions. So I came up with this guide to the most popular cosmetic stores in Mall of Arabia – hope it’ll help you put your best face forward! 42 DESTINATION JEDDAH

VA VA VOOM

Va Va Voom is one of the many stores, besides I got one a couple of years ago and I still use MAC and the Body Shop, that are owned by it as a beach bag. However, I’ve realized that customer service plays a vital role in purchasing the Alshaya Group. Amongst their stock, the right product and I found the they had all the regular brands like: staff at Va Va Voom to be generally YSL, Dior, Makeup Forever, Lancôme, Arabic speaking (fine if you’re Gurelain, Givenchy, etc, and one a linguist, but very difficult if really good thing about this store is you’re a newcomer!) FACES Walking into Faces, I felt like it had a very boring appearance. I don’t like how the makeup displays are so congested and close together, where each salesman pushes you to buy from the brand that he is endorsing. What if I want a foundation from Dior and a powder from Chanel? But overall I found the management at Faces to be excellent, and in any successful business, if the manager is there, the staff are likely to provide better customer service. What I like about Faces is that they always give good “gifts with purchase”. I’ve gotten YSL brushes, discount vouchers, mini eye -shadow palettes, etc. I also find Faces

to have a great product selection. They usually have items in the newest collection before the other cosmetic stores. BUT since Faces is so popular ; what often happens to me is I spend 20 minutes trying to decide on a product…

only to find out they don’t even have it in stock! Very irritating. They should red sticker the items in the display that are out of stock so that we can try it, but we know that the item is not available. Also, I DON’T want to smell every single fragrance, so please stop handing me those fragrance-soaked sample papers! I find the staff to be knowledgeable, but pushy. They are not interested in any level of customer service besides looking to make sales: a big “No-No” in my book. As a customer, especially as a woman, I prefer salesmen to greet me…then leave me alone until I ask for help.

Pros:

• Newest Collections • Great Gift with Purchases • Good Management

Cons:

• Due to popularity - many items are out of stock • Pushy Salesmen

SEPHORA When I moved to Jeddah 6 years ago, I remember asking my friends why there wasn’t a Sephora in Jeddah. And voila! A couple of years later, I saw a huge opening on Tahlia Street – thrilling! Sephora is like a “candy land” for those of us who love makeup. But over the years, they have also developed a great selection of skin care, fragrance & makeup. What I like about Sephora are their nice, big makeup displays. and their salesmen are more informed about the products they are selling. They offer a 10% discount card for regular customers too, and the salesmen, generally are not pushy. Another perk is the line of Sephora Brand Products: makeup, skincare, body care, and utilities, which are very reasonably priced. (Try Sephora Brand #14 lipstick, a perfect pink!)

Pros:

• Inviting ambiance • 10% Discount • Sephora Brand! • Relatively knowledgable staff, usually not too pushy • A good variety of hair/skin/makeup brands & products that are not available anywhere else in KSA • Large Displays • iPhone App (You can download the Sephora app and scan the item you would like to purchase. It will display customer reviews!)

Cons:

• Rare gift with purchases • Items out of stock • Do not have the newest collections as quickly as at Faces

Operation Jeddah Underwater & Coastline Cleanup

Text & Photography by Romy Israel

DESTINATION JEDDAH 49

Red Sea Coast

The Alpha Phi Omega Alumni Association of Western Region, KSA (APO-AAWRKSA) conducted their annual coastal cleanup along the Jeddah shoreline in support of Project AWARE (Aquatic and Water Awareness, Responsibility and Education) Foundation – an international foundation that aims to conserve the underwater environment. The activities involved education, advocacy and action. APO is the largest international service fraternity which was founded in 1925 in Pennsylvania, USA. Its primary purposes are to develop leadership, to establish friendship, and to promote service. Since 1925, Alpha Phi Omega has spread all over the United States with more than 600 chapters from coast to coast; the Western Region chapter was established in 1992. 50 DESTINATION JEDDAH

This year’s coastal cleanup event coincided with Worldwide Environmental Month (September) and involved three essential components: 1. Divers cleaned up the underwater environment 2. Non-divers cleared the coastline of litter 3. Information and education campaign raised awareness

APO members were joined in the coastal cleanup by members of the Filipino Divers Association, several Filipino community service associations, as well as local and expat divers and environmentalists. Over 300 volunteers cheerfully participated in this annual event…garnering a heartfelt ‘Thank-you’ from a passerby who was visiting the Corniche for an early morning stroll with his family. DESTINATION JEDDAH 51

Red Sea Coast

Who benefits from the Coastal Cleanup? 1. Everyone who uses the Jeddah coastline for recreation or commercial purposes will benefit from this program’s improvements in cleanliness and safety. 2. Wildlife and plants benefit as trashfree water results in improved habitats. Entanglement of animals in fishing line, and ingestion of plastic by wild animals will both be decreased. 3. Volunteers involved with the cleanup will learn firsthand the impact litter has on our shore. There is no better education about the harm that litter can cause than by bagging it for several hours. 4. Students benefit by gaining practical skills in management, organizing, program development, and public relations while helping Jeddah’s environment. Teachers benefit by learning their important role in teaching their students about recycling and litter issues. 5. Jeddah as a municipality will benefit as litter is collected through volunteer efforts, rather than spending riyals on workers. 52 DESTINATION JEDDAH

PLEASURE Comes in Slices

As far as foreign cuisines go, no dish is as universally liked nor as versatile as pizza. In fact, going as far as calling it “foreign” feels like such a stretch! Whether it reminds you of being a child enjoying a birthday party or an adult visiting an authentic Italian restaurant abroad, pizza is first and foremost, the ultimate crowdpleaser. We’ve tried the famous pizza chains, yet we’re also lucky to experience the boutique pizzerias which have sprung up all over Jeddah. Being such a melting-pot of cultures, you are sure to find a pizza to suit even the most finicky of eaters.

Aroma Café on Alhamra-the Corniche One of the many cafes in Jeddah, but one of the few that have stood the test of time. Initially, people flocked to the place because of its unique atmosphere and decent shisha, however, its regulars remain loyal for its food that hasn’t compromised on quality over the years. The international-fusion is apparent in its pizza which is very aromatic as it is prepared fresh with Middle-Eastern herbs. Large enough to split, yet light enough that it won’t leave you feeling overly-stuffed… this pizza leaves you wanting more. Contact info: 02 660 5160

La Promenade on Tahlia Street Overlooking one of the most happening streets in town is La Promenade. Often ignored by the many shoppers, it offers a variety of different cuisines, yet most prominent is Italian…and yes, yes, they offer shisha as well. Get a seat next to the large window and enjoy its cozy décor. Almost set up like a pristine, yet classic hotel, the soft sofas might even be too comfortable to eat pizza in safety. The staff is always friendly and their pizza is superb. With a very thin crust and fresh vegetables on top, you won’t feel guilty indulging here. Contact info: 02 668 8712

Il Porto

Rossopomodoro

Malik Road

Malik Road

A charming pizzeria situated on the park Hyatt Marina resembles the small pizzerias one finds in Italy, with its checkered tablecloths and its wood pizza oven along with the outdoor seating, makes a perfect place for a day time lunch, a family treat or a romantic dinner, their perfect thin crust pizza served in a hot pan with variety of toppings, such as, Caesar, Tropical, old plain Margarita and the all time favorite, Peperoni, you can also make your own choice of toppings and watch it prepared in front of you, don’t miss their salad bar and our last advice, book in advance if you are planning to visit Il Porto on a weekend.

Finally, an Italian restaurant whose management is as Italian as the food it serves. Originally a chain in Naples, which is known for being the birthplace of the pizza, this restaurant opened its doors to Jeddahwis earlier this year. Rossopomodorro has been described in newspapers as “Neopolitan visits cosmopolitan.” The pizza section of the menu takes up most of the space and offers twists to the classics (fried pizza, anyone?), yet is still able to satisfy those who aren’t as adventurous. This place boasts the freshest ingredients and stays true to traditional Italian flavors.

Margherita

Lallo’s

Prince Sultan St.

Tahlia- Obhur

Located in the middle of all the rowdiness in Jeddah is a charming new Italian restaurant. One of the newer ones to pop up, this place is more difficult to get a table as it always seems packed with businessmen who came by for lunch, or families wanting to enjoy the ambiance, which is lively yet intimate. Capitalizing on the new craze for brick-oven pizza, Margherita does not disappoint its patrons. The dough is baked; soft on the inside yet crisped to perfection on the outside, topped with fresh ingredients, the most popular choice being pepperoni. Make sure you call ahead to ensure a spot; this pizza is not to be missed.

For over 35 years, this place was only located at the Italian Culture Center. It wasn’t until they opened a branch to the public that people got to taste the best Italian food without leaving Jeddah. For years Lallo’s was the only place to go for a traditionally-made pizza. With a branch in Obhur, it’s the perfect place to stop for a satisfying dinner on the way home from the beach. With its garden-fresh ingredients and talented head chef, Lallo’s has been the pioneer of Italian authenticity for many, many years and shows no signs of slowing down.

Castello’s Khalid Bin Alwaleed St. Truly a hidden jewel, Castello’s is one of Jeddah’s best-kept secrets. Open for around 30 years, this place somehow manages to never lose its vibe; almost like walking onto a scene of The Godfather. With its dim lighting, and cozy set-up, you are immediately put at ease. The food remains as enjoyable as ever, and their pizza is (you guessed it) oven-baked to crisp perfection. Go for the pizza, stay for the linguine, soup, or tiramisu. Contact info: 02 665 2281

Pizza Lenuo on the Corniche

Wood. Burning. Ovens. If those three words don’t tantalize your taste buds, then you’ve probably never had a real pizza. Slightly hidden, yet once you notice it, you wonder how you’ve missed it… and once you’ve tasted it, you’ll wonder how you’ve gone this far without it! They truly make pizza right at Lenuo’s. From the number of different choices, to the simple margherita, to the “build-your-own,” the care that goes into each pie or calzone is evident with each bite. Contact info: 02 661 5588

Piatto Malik Road

Pizza Fusion AlRawda- Malik Road

Piatto is a new addition to the Italian scene in Jeddah. This place aparantly uses good, quality ingredients. The Pepperoni pizza and Quattro Formaggi are on top of the list. Piatto masters both, with their thin and crispy crust, and fresh tasty toppings. The blue cheese taste in the Quattro formaggi was very strong. the Quattro Stagioni was very goood.... This place is beautiful; the staff is friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Contact info: 02 692 2501

This place has a reputation for inventing the “healthy pizza.” No such thing, you say? In Jeddah, this is the only place which gives you the option of ordering your choice of pizza on wholegrain dough, giving it a rustic, hearty flavor. Mighty generous with their chunks of vegetables, all ingredients are certified organic too. Priding themselves on their environmentalism, even the pizza boxes are recycled. With two branches so far, this is a pizza chain unlike the ones we have been familiar with. Rawda-Contact info 1: 02 261 6933 Malik road-Contact info 2: 02 692 4606 DESTINATION JEDDAH 59

Uno’s Chicago Grill Prince Sultan St.

Isabella’s is another hidden Italian restaurant. No gimmicks or fancy adverts for this place, which may be why it’s not as well known as it should be. With its large outdoor patio, its casual setting makes it perfect for a good pizza. The brick oven alone where the pizza is baked should suffice. Not as thin as a traditional Italian pizza, yet not as doughy as it is in the US. When the weather starts to cool, this place starts to fill up fast.

Now, if being presented with a thinly crusted pizza with fresh greens on top and drizzled with some kind of olive oil is not your idea of pizza (“I want a MAN’s pizza!”), then do not fret. Anyone who has ever had a deep-dish Chicago-style pizza would know where to go if you want a meaty, cheesy, herby, smotheredin-tomato-sauce pizza pie. The story goes that in the US, pizza used to be eaten as a snack until the founder of the restaurant figured that if you combined some of Italy’s old, authentic recipes with impressive quantities of the best meats, fresh cheeses, ripe vegetables and flavorful spices, pizza would become a hearty meal. It was the start of an American tradition. Uno’s pizza is at least two inches thick with ingredients, you will get your money’s worth and leave fully satisfied.

Mystery Diner Lamborghini Cafe All Revved Up… But Nowhere To Go Tonino Lamborghini Cafe, a recently opened hip, innovative café, is set apart by its affiliation with a top notch automotive brand – Lamborghini. Ever dreamt of getting behind the wheel of a souped up racecar? Well, take a seat in this new café, buy some branded merchandise, and sip a high-voltage espresso to experience life in the fast lane! Or at least that was what I had in my mind on my first visit…but the reality left me feeling empty. The red, black, and yellow color scheme shouts Lamborghini, even from a distance. The ambiance is outright masculine, from the dominance of the color black to the blue-lit bar and the edgy setup. Chairs are comfortably functional, café layout makes it easy to spot a waiter, and the lighting is pleasantly dim without affecting visibility of the surroundings. The Lamborghini stamp is on every item you lay sight on, from the tissue box, the coasters and the napkins, the distinctive logo stands out. The Lamborghini Shop at the entrance to the café carries all things Lamborghini gadgets and collectables, t-shirts, shoes, watches, wallets, and every imaginable

accessory. But judging from the hustle and bustle in the shop as compared to the café… it’s obvious that people are spending money on everything but the food and drinks! The menu is quite simple: not too many pages and not too many items - pizzas, sandwiches, drinks, and desserts. Come on – Italy is an amazing country with lots of delicious food, but the menu doesn’t reflect either Italian variety or quality. However the Lamborghini flavor is strongly sensed in the drinks, especially the hot ones; the coffee is intense, concentrated and gives a speedy caffeine hit. Nothing less than firstclass service is expected at a café with the brand name ‘Lamborghini’, yet it remains to be seen if expectations will be met in this regard. No dividers between ‘Families’ and ‘Singles’ section leads to confusion, while basic attention to service can be improved, as well as waiters’ English language skills. It’s worth searching out the Lamborghini Café for an overall novel experience, but don’t count on a 0- 60mph kick-start to your evening! Location: Mall of Arabia – 2nd Floor

Bait Al-Jawi Feeling adventurous? Need an adrenaline rush? Nothing beats a trip to Bait Al-Jawi, an Indonesian restaurant that has adventure written all over it. For a first-timer, just glimpsing the menu will surprise you with unfamiliar names like Gado-Gado (steamed bean sprouts and vegetable salads with spicy peanut sauce), Corupuk (prawn crackers), Deng-Deng (beef generously seasoned with hot chilies), Beef Rendang (spicy beef curry with tamarind) since they come from a completely different language. Don’t hesitate to ask the staff about the dishes - they are more than happy to help and frequently translate the menu. Do try the ultimate traditional Indonesian dish- the special Jawi Mixed Dish. It is served on large plate with a bed of rice in the middle and surrounded by vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, and poultry and garnished with shrimp fritters, banana chips, peanuts and pickles. For an extra SR 7, they will also throw in grilled Chicken Satay (marinated, skewered and grilled meat), Corupuk and a soft drink! Adventurous and affordable - after all, variety is the spice of life. Location: Hera’a St. Tel: +966-2-2367666

Voila (Chocolate Fondue) One of the few places in Jeddah where you can find the perfect Madeleine cake – a soft, buttery creation with a smooth, melt-in-your-mouth texture, is…Viola. Their version of this classic French pastry cake is perfectly shell-shaped, with a creamy texture available in two different varieties of chocolate and vanilla, flavored with a hint of orange and lemon flower water respectively. The cakes are baked from scratch daily. For the ultimate indulgent treat, grab some Madeleines and a chocolate fondue set from Viola, complete with chocolate in a pot and a burning tray. Try dipping the Madeleines in the chocolate fondue - for sharing with family or for an evening with ‘the one’, this combination of Madeleine cakes with decadent chocolate fondue is a fun, creative dessert. Famous Mosques

Around The World By Habib Shaikh

Historically, mosques have served a multi-purpose function in Muslim communities around the world; they are places of worship, places of learning, and places of social congregation and celebration. The Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) house in Madinah was the first gathering place for communal prayer in Islam, and the Quba Mosque in Madinah is known as the first mosque established by the Prophet’s fledgling community after the Hijrah (flight from Makkah to Madinah.) Mosques can be found all over the world - from the icy lands of Inuvik in Canadian Arctic where the first mosque was opened in November 2010, to the South Australian outback where the remains of the oldest mosque in Australia are situated near Maree. In fact, mosques came to be established in many parts of the world as a result of the mobility of the world’s labor force. Camels taken to dry, arid parts of the world such as Arizona and the Australian outback were accompanied by their camel-handlers, often Muslim Arabs or Asians who then established mosques in their new homelands. The Great Mosque of Adelaide 70 DESTINATION JEDDAH

was built by the descendants of the Afghan cameleers who arrived in large numbers in the 1860’s in Australia to work the camel trains which opened up the interior of the continent. Basically a mosque has to be clean, hygienic and devoid of any features of idolatry. Mosques can range from a small portable one such as the one recently designed by Tunisian Imam Hassmem Bounamcha to the grand Badshahi Mosque, (Emperor’s Mosque) built in 1673 by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in Lahore, Pakistan which has a capacity to accommodate more than 55,000 worshippers.

The Niujie Mosque in Beijing

The Grand Mosque of Damascus

The Grand Mosque of Damascus, also known as the Umayyad Mosque, built by the Umayyad Caliph Walid ibn Abd Al-Malik (705-715), is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the world.

The Niujie Mosque in Beijing is more than one thousand years old and covers an area measuring nearly 10,000 sq. meters. Outside the prayer area is the ‘Watching Moon Tower,’ a magnificent hexagonal, two-storied pagoda painted in red, blue and green, which was used by the imam to sight the crescent moon in order to determine the start of Ramadan.

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca

The Great Mosque of Kairouan

The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, built to commemorate the 60th birthday of former Moroccan King Hassan II in 1989, is the second largest religious building in the world which can accommodate over 100,000 worshippers in its grounds. The 210 meter minaret is the tallest in the world and is visible day and night for miles around. Designed by the French architect Michel Pinseau, the mosque stands on a promontory looking out to the Atlantic; almost half of the surface of the mosque lies over the Atlantic Ocean which is visible through the glass floor.

The Great Mosque of Kairouan, also known as the Sidi Oqba Mosque, had simple beginnings in 670 AD, during the time of Uqba ibn Nafi, the original founder of Kairouan,Tunisia. As the city expanded during the following three hundred years, the original mosque was torn down and rebuilt in 703, again in 774, and then significantly enlarged by rulers of the Aghlabid dynasty in 836 and 863. Numerous renovations and ornamentations were subsequently conducted during the 13th and 14th centuries by the Hafsid dynasty rulers and during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries (when the region was controlled by the Turks) by the Mouradite and Husseinite rulers.

Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Ţūlūn While the Mosque of Ahmad Ibn Ţūlūn in Cairo is believed to be the oldest mosque in the city surviving in its original form and is the largest mosque in Cairo in terms of land area, the Amr Ibn Al-As Mosque is the first and oldest mosque ever built in Egypt and is the oldest existing mosque on the entire African Continent.

The Great Mosque Of Djenne The first mosque on the site of the Great Mosque of Djenne (or the mud mosque) in Mali was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the ‘Old Towns of Djenne’ it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988. The mosque is the largest mud brick or adobe building in the world constructed in an environment-friendly way.

The Djinguereber Mosque in Timbuktu

The Djinguereber Mosque in Timbuktu was built in 1325 and housed what was then the largest library in the world.

The Gazi Husrev Bey Mosque

The Gazi Husrev Bey Mosque, the largest and one of the most beautiful in Bosnia and Herzegovina, was built in 1530-31. In 1537 a waqf was established for a madrasa (school), for which Husrev Bey endowed seven hundred thousand drachmas. Named after his mother Seldjuka, it was the most important educational institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina during Turkish rule.

The Kalon Mosque in Bukhara The Kalon Mosque in Bukhara, built by the Karakhanid ruler Arslan Khan in 1127, was known also as Jamia (Friday) mosque. Kalon in Tajik means ‘great’ and when the mosque was built; the minaret was probably the tallest building in Central Asia. In addition to its main purpose as a minaret, the Kalon Minaret served as a watchtower and a guide to approaching caravans on the Silk Route. The present Kalon Mosque was built in the 16th century. It was used as a warehouse in Soviet times and only reopened as a working mosque in 1991. The mosque can accommodate 10,000 worshippers.

The Qol Sharif Mosque

The Qol Sharif mosque, in Kazan is the largest mosque in Russia. It was opened on June 24, 2005 as part of the festivities marking the city’s 1,000th anniversary, in the presence of leaders of the Islamic world. The whiteand-blue mosque is built on the site where the old Qol Sharif Mosque once stood. That mosque was destroyed, as were hundreds of other mosques in the region, after the Russian conquest of Kazan in 1552.

The Mosque of Sultan Ahmed, in Istanbul The Mosque of Sultan Ahmed in Istanbul is distinguished by its six fluted minarets, the origins of which may be explained by this interesting anecdote: Sultan Ahmet I wanted to have a minaret made of gold which is ‘altin’ in Turkish. The architect misunderstood him as ‘alti’ which means ‘six’ It is noted for its predominantly blue Iznik tilework - whence it derives the name ‘The Blue Mosque.” One of the largest of Istanbul’s structures, the complex includes a mosque, madressas, the sultan’s chamber, shops of tradesmen, a hamam (public bath), a public fountain with a spout, a mausoleum, a hospital, a soup kitchen and a primary school.

The Memorial Mosque in Canton The Memorial Mosque in Canton, thought to be the oldest mosque in China, has the earliest freestanding minaret in China. The mosque complex covers an area of about 3,000 square meters and stretches along the north-south axis, in the Chinese fashion. Also known as the Lighthouse Mosque, its minaret is 36 feet tall with a pointed tip. The building used to serve as a beacon for boats, which is how it got its alternative name.

Healthy Living

Breast Cancer Awareness: Living a Preventive Lifestyle By Nourah Al-Shubaily Cancer is a disease which is reaching into every family. Dr. Modia Batterjee from the Al Bidayah Center shares some insider tips on how to help reduce the risk of breast cancer. Preventing an illness is always preferable to curing one. Al Bidayah Center works on encouraging people to live a preventive lifestyle while also stressing early detection. This includes: 1. Increased breastfeeding. Breastfeeding reduces your risk of developing breast cancer. The longer you breastfeed, the greater the protection.

3. Less exposure to chemicals. This includes pesticides, aerosol cans, and other forms of pollutants. Try getting more fresh air.

2. Less smoking. Smoking or prolonged exposure to second-hand smoke increases your risk of developing breast cancer.

4. Eating more natural foods and fresh fruit. Stay away from processed foods and preservatives

Beginning at age 20, you should do a self breast examination every month. Beginning at age 40, or even sooner if your doctor recommends it, you should have regular mammograms. You are more likely to catch a lump at its smallest with regular check-ups. The sooner you get checked, the sooner you can resolve the matter.

40

To learn how to do a self examination and for other information on breast cancer, visit: • www.breastcancer.org • www.nationalbreastcancer.org • health.discovery.com • www.cancer.org 5. Exercise. A study from the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) showed as little as 1.25 to 2.5 hours per week of brisk walking reduced a woman’s risk by 18%. 6. Cut the contraceptives. Women who use oral contraceptives (birth control pills) have a greater risk than those who do not. The risk will decline over time if the pills are stopped.

Saudi Cancer Society The Saudi Cancer Society provides a plethora of information and services related to the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer. Their unique approach includes the entire family, not only the cancer patient, as they strive to provide assistance during all phases from detection to posttreatment maintenance. They assist with accommodation and transportation close to the hospital, meals for the family, and even financial support when necessary.

Their services include:

Health Awareness Programs – dietary information, books, media campaigns etc. Second Medical Opinions – from diagnosis to treatment, care within KSA or abroad etc. Assessment of Herbal Treatments – checking herbal medicines in conjunction with customary medicines http://www.saudicancer.com

Recycled Crafts: T-Shirt Bracelets

Bracelets made out of brightly colored old t-shirts.

To make these bracelets you will need some old t-shirts and a bunch of bangle bracelets. Try using old bangles that you already own, check thrift stores or pick some for a few riyals at Alshati or Albalad.

Cut t-shirt in 1/2" to 1" wide strips. Depending on the thickness of the bangle - a thick bracelet will need thicker strips. Loosely tie one end of the t-shirt strip to the bangle and start wrapping fabric around bracelet - the tighter the better. Wrap fabric all the way around until you meet the first knot - untie the knot and tie both ends together to close. Make a double knot, pull it tight and make sure the knot is positioned on the inside of the bracelet. Trim ends with scissors or use a glue gun to secure ends.

Green Food…Seriously Good!! By Dilara Hafiz

Don’t worry, ‘green food’ doesn’t mean you have to recycle your left-overs into eternity or eat each meal on bamboo plates…by ‘green food’, I literally mean the color green. A light-hearted look at the whole green living movement is necessary to keep things in perspective; after all, you probably already recycle your daily newspaper, conserve water and electricity, and try to buy organic food. What more can you do? Throw a green party! Eat on your finest china instead of paper plates, keep the lights dim by using mood candles throughout the room, and eat as many green foods as you can think of (only invite your good friends who are both hungry and have a good sense of humor for this party.) It’s a fun way to reinforce your commitment to living a green lifestyle by injecting some good vibes into what can often become a serious, boring, ‘end-of-the-world’ eco-discussion whenever the topic of green living arises.

One Day By: David Nicholls One Day is a story about a relationship between Dexter, a privileged young boy and Emma, an intellectual young girl. They meet on the day which they both graduate from university…and the story catches up with them on the same day over the next 20 years. It’s a unique story-telling angle which unveils the changes in their lives and the way their relationship evolves over time. Dexter becomes a TV presenter who focuses on the outward signs of success, but succumbs to periods of sex, booze, and drugs as he struggles to maintain his lifestyle. Emma is an idealist who pursues meaningful jobs and eventually becomes an author. Although they take lovers and spouses along the way, they really can’t live without each other. Will they or won’t they eventually get together? Nicholls’ excellent writing ensures that you’ll stick with this story as you become invested in their future. The story is not your predictable romance – the dialogue is witty and humorous and you’re eager to discover the changes in their lives as you catch annual snapshots of their journeys. Read the book before you see the movie as the book is richer in character development, but both are still enjoyable ways to spend a few hours. DESTINATION JEDDAH 89
